HOW SUMMER CAMP SUPPORTS HEALTHY CHILD Summer camp often conjures

happy images of playing outdoors, trying new activities and making friends. Because camp can provide such a positive and safe environment away from home to do all these things, many campers (and their parents) look forward each year to the next fun-filled, camp experience. According to the American Camp Association (ACA), summer camp is about much more than “just” fun. It helps kids develop social skills — leadership, communication and participation; build personal traits — responsibility, resourcefulness and resilience; and gain adeptness in community living — caring, fairness, citizenship and trustworthiness. Read on to discover the many ways that camp enriches the lives of children and, ultimately, makes our community a better place.

Kids Grow and Develop at Camp “In the camp community, the skills and traits that kids get from camp are often referred to as the four Cs: compassion, contribution, commitment and character,” explains ACA staff. “For years, campers’ parents have reported that when their children return home from camp they are more caring, understand the importance of giving, are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right, and are willing to be more responsible.

DEVELOPMENT “Camp also provides children with a community of caring adults, who nurture experiential education that results in self-respect and appreciation for human value. It is a supportive environment that encourages kids to understand they are part of a larger community.” Along with the many benefits of personal and social development, camp can also mitigate some of the negative effects caused by kids spending too much time in front of electronic screens the rest of the year. Research shows that even small amounts of time outside improves a child’s ability to focus, lowers childhood obesity rates, establishes connections with nature, and allows kids to engage their imaginations while discovering free play.

Camp Helps Kids Prepare for School and Beyond Former campers state that camp helped prepare them for school and the workplace in a groundbreaking national study by the ACA that explores how camp prepares youth for college, career and life. They also report that relationship skills, appreciation for others’ differences, emotional regulation, and responsibility were among the things they learned at camp

that they consider most important in their lives today. Sending kids to summer camp can help prevent the dreaded “summer slide” (the tendency to lose academic skills over summer). According to the ACA, camp is an experiential learning environment that helps parents stem summer learning loss. Many camps offer a plethora of activities for campers that includes: rocket building, pottery, dance, geocaching, STEM activities and so much more. Plan an awesome summer for your child with camps featured throughout this issue. v Lisa Pawlak is a contributing writer and Encinitas resident.

An American Camp Association Youth Outcomes Study shows: • 96% of campers said camp helped them make new friends. • 93% of campers said camp helped them get to know kids who were different than themselves. • 92% of campers said that people at camp helped them feel good about themselves. • 74% of campers said they did things at camp that they were afraid to do at first. • ACA accreditation acknowledges programs committed to the health, safety and overall wellbeing of both campers and staff.

Anne Malinoski

Is Your Preschooler Ready for Day Camp? There’s so much to love about

summer camp: fun traditions, new friendships, the great outdoors, art, athletics and much more. Even the littlest campers can expect a positive experience. According to Ashley Melton, a seasoned camp counselor and teaching credential student at SDSU, young children adapt quite well to day camp. “Camp is one of the best things you can do for your preschooler,” Melton says. “You are providing a structured schedule, new adults to learn from and new environments to explore. Those are all big wins in the 3–5 age range.” Here are five signs your preschooler is ready to join the fun at day camp:

Looking for camps and enrichment programs for children with special needs? Visit www.SNRFSD.org/specialneeds-resource-list-san-diego/ camps-and-enrichmentprograms.

1

He enjoys playing with other kids. It’s normal for young toddlers to prefer playing alone, but as they grow into the preschool years, kids start to play cooperatively with one another. You might see them sharing toys or playing make believe together. If your child has made this shift, he’s likely to enjoy team-centered activities at camp.

12 • SanDiegofamily.com • Digital Camp & Summer Programs Guide 2019

2

He’s been cared for in a group setting. If your child has been to daycare, preschool, Sunday school or even child watch at the gym, camp is likely to be a familiar and positive experience for him. If he is grouped with kids his age, counselors should understand how to make activities fun and developmentally appropriate for them. If your child has never experienced group care before, camp is a great way to learn that other adults can be excellent caregivers and role models. You have to start somewhere—it might as well be somewhere fun.

Questions for the camp director: Is there a half-day camp option? Will my child be grouped with kids his age? If my child feels homesick, how will the staff help him cope? How many children do you expect in his age group? If an older sibling attends this camp, can they spend time together?

3

He tells you he’s interested. It’s important to ask preschoolers how they feel. Start a positive conversation about camp. Share your own memories from camp and talk about some of the great things he might do as a camper. Ask if he’d like to attend. If it’s a big yes, he’s probably ready. If he’s nervous about a few things, keep the conversation going. You can decide together whether this is the right year to start.

4

He is comfortable in loud spaces. Is your kid a champ when attending baseball games? Chances are, he’ll do great in a busy, noisy summer camp environment. His ability to remain unruffled when crowds get excited shows he’s big enough to handle—and enjoy—an energetic group of kids.

5

You are ready. If you know your child is ready for camp, be sure to tell him so. Young children need parents to set the tone in new situations. “If you feel confident in those running the camp and their abilities—and if you convey that confidence to your child—he will follow your lead,” Melton says. Explain that camp is a safe and fun place to be and that the counselors will take good care of him. Your preschooler will mirror your conviction. v Anne Malinoski is an award-winning contributing writer and mother of two boys. She spent her college summers as a camp counselor. Go purple team!

WHY

CAMP

MATTERS Families used to live in

communities, but by keeping kids inside, we have lost a real sense of “neighborhood.” So, how do we reestablish that sense of camaraderie and equip children with the skills and confidence they need to tackle changes in the world? One way is to start with a positive camp experience, which provides children with the opportunity to learn important lessons about community, character building, skill development and an appreciation for the outdoors. Camp promotes community. It creates a great space that shows kids how to live together and care for one another. There are traditions, boundaries and rules. Camp is a place where kids can “practice” growing up, stretching their social, emotional and physical muscles outside the safety of their immediate family. This is what childhood is supposed to do and arguably used to do more organically. Camp teaches critical thinking. We need really strong problem solvers in

the next century. Kids need science, math and biology, of course, but without the ability to relate, connect, empathize or inspire innovation, how will they be able to make a difference? Camp embraces the natural environment. Camp is one big outdoor science lab. Why should we expect future generations to care about protecting the planet if they do not really experience it? Kids need to catch frogs in the pond, get lost among the trees, and feel the wind and rain on their faces to understand the importance of these things. We want this generation to see the awe-inspiring aurora borealis gaze at stars in the dark of the night. Camp creates future leaders. The camp experience offers kids a microcosm of what leadership feels like in the real world through contact with camp directors, counselors and multi-generational staff. Kids also get opportunities to practice being leaders themselves—trip leader, team leader, cabin leader and the list goes on.

16 • SanDiegofamily.com • Digital Camp & Summer Programs Guide 2019

Camp is an equal opportunity canvas. There is no hierarchy when it comes to a particular racial, ethnic or socioeconomic group. Nobody is left out. Everyone participates. Camp has a lasting impact. One of the greatest gifts a family can give a child is a sense of success and achievement. Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help and try new things. They leave understanding that it’s OK to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s typically what happens when you learn by trial and error. Camp embraces an “I can” attitude. Ultimately, kids need camp because it mirrors what they will face in the real world. Camp is not just a series of frivolous activities. We often think if it looks like fun it must be unimportant, but “fun” is a young person’s “work”— to learn, to grow, to be productive, creative and happy. If kids don’t do that work, they will not develop into wellrounded adults. v Hugh Haller is the president of the Camping and Education Foundation. Learn more at www.campingedu.org.
