Cox Presents:

A Salute to

CELEBRATING 26 YEARS Find out who will be named a 2016-2017 San Diego County Teacher of the Year during the 26th annual “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers,” an Academy Awards-style extravaganza that recognizes the region’s 26,000 public school teachers.

“Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” brought to you by San Diego County Credit Union begins at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego, and will be televised live on Channel 4 San Diego.

The evening will feature celebrity emcees, musical and dance performances from local students, and the announcement of the five Teachers of the Year from 43 nominees, who were selected by their respective school districts.

2015-2016 San Diego County Teachers of the Year

Teachers Teacher of the Year nominees The five Teachers of the Year, who will go on to represent San Diego County at the California Teacher of the Year program later this year, are selected based on student achievement, professional development and community involvement, teaching philosophy and personal style, knowledge of educational issues and trends, promotion and development of the teaching profession, accountability and ability to serve as ambassadors of education.

Celebrity co-hosts

A graduate of Helix High School in La Mesa, Phillips has been with CNN since 1999, where she has served as an anchor and correspondent from the network’s world headquarters in Atlanta. She has reported on topics such as Sept. 11, Hurricane Katrina, and Iraqi students in Baghdad who risk their lives every day to attend school. Morgigno grew up in California’s Central Valley and came to San Diego in 1978 as a reporter and anchor for what is now NBC 7. He also worked at KUSI in San Diego and KTTV in Los Angeles. Morgigno retired in 2014 as station manager of Channel 4 San Diego, which he helped create in 1997.

Community “thank you” For more than a quarter of a century, the San Diego County Office of Education has teamed up with Cox Communications and Channel 4 San Diego to produce “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” to showcase the region’s 26,000 public school teachers and give the community a way to say “thank you.” It’s also a way for the business community to support local teachers and education. In addition to this year’s title sponsor, San Diego County Credit Union, other sponsors include The Super Dentists, Procopio, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Entravision, Luna Grill, Subaru, San Diego Union-Tribune, KUSI and I Heart Media. CNN correspondent and San Diego native Kyra Phillips returns to her hometown to co-host the show with veteran San Diego broadcast journalist Dennis Morgigno.

“Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” has received national recognition for honoring teachers like no other region in the nation, and has earned numerous awards, including more than 20 Emmy Awards for Channel 4 San Diego for excellence in programming.

Tickets on sale now! The public can join in the salute and be part of the live television audience. Tickets are $15.50, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more, or by mentioning title sponsor San Diego County Credit Union. Tickets can be purchased online at www.sandiegotheatres.org/a-salute-to-teachers or by calling the Balboa Theatre box office at 570-1100 (all San Diego area codes).

Our San Diego

Publisher’s Letter

Camping, Fundraising and DayTripping If you were raised in San Diego, I’m sure you went to 6th grade camp. Everyone got the chance to get close to nature for a week. There was Cuyamaca and another camp at Mt. Palomar. For some of you, it might have been the first camping experience. Many schools in San Diego County are still enrolled in this program. The students get to sleep in cabins, go hiking, see beautiful stars in the night sky and do other fun activities. Read more about 6th grade camp on page 22. My family moved to San Diego from Nebraska in the middle of the school year and our son left for 6th grade camp on his first day of school! Some schools have fundraisers to help students go to camp, have special events, purchase playground equipment or meet other needs. In our article “Put the Fun Back into Fundraising” there are several suggestions. Read them over on page 40 and see if there are new ideas that spark your interest. Your preschooler already enjoys school—why not introduce him to a second language? Research tells us this is the easiest time to learn a new language. Find more information at www .SanDiegoFamily.com/resources/education-directory/1973. A half-, one- or two-day trip to Julian is fun. Check out things to do there on page 42. It is less than an hour from San Diego. Our family camped at Paso Picacho Campground before the Cedar Fire in 2003. We always took the Stonewall Peak Trail, which gives you a beautiful view of the area. Don’t forget to check out our Afterschool Activities Directory on page 30 for fun extra-curriculum activities.

Families

Where is your family’s favorite place to take a day trip? Lisa Pawlak, contributing writer There’s something for everyone at Balboa Park. Take a walk, let the kids run wild, visit a museum or relax with a picnic!

Michele Hancock, marketing director We love taking the family to Knott’s Berry Farm for a day of fun! We love the western shops, shows and rides. Tony Andrews, marketing representative There is so much to explore in Anza-Borrego Desert— prehistoric sites, largerthan-life art sculptures and plenty of historic points of interest. Discover the beauty of the desert in all of its unique seasons.

Lisa Gipson, managing editor Our family loves driving to Julian in the fall. We stop at Dudley’s Bakery in Santa Ysabel and Wynola Pizza for lunch, before continuing on to Julian for shopping and apple pie.

Mission Statement To enhance the quality of life for San Diego County families by providing information and resources that support the importance and pleasure of parenting.

The Bad: Data Overload Pokémon GO can use 2-8 MB of data per hour. Users who play through their Google account give the app access to all their information. Many people are concerned how it will be used – especially information on minors.

Since its release, Pokémon GO has exploded in

popularity. It has more than 21 million daily active users in the U.S. alone, making it the biggest mobile game ever. The average user spends 33 minutes, 25 seconds a day on Pokémon GO. That’s more than Twitter and Instagram combined.

The Ugly: Pokéstops and Predators

How it works Pokémon GO combines mobile gaming, virtual reality and GPS-based gaming to allow players to “hunt” for Pokémon in real-world locations.

The Good: Getting Kids Active

What Should Parents Do? • Turn Pokémon hunts into family bonding time! • Never let young children go “Pokémon hunting” alone. • Make sure teens have a portable charger with them. • Talk to your kids about staying aware of their surroundings. • Set a data limit on your child’s phone and play in areas with WiFi. Learn more about how to keep kids safe online at www.TeenSafe.com.

Out the Door on Time: 9 Tips for a

7

Have your child use an alarm clock. We bought a Yoda alarm clock and gave it to our son as a present as he entered kindergarten. He was excited by the unexpected gift and in turn, was excited to use it. I was amazed when he skipped into the dining room each morning at 6:15 a.m., ready to start his day.

Smooth Morning Routine I am not a morning person.

Life at home with my toddlers used to be filled with mornings cuddling in PJs. Arriving at preschool on time was a challenge; I was often late. When my son started kindergarten, I was determined to get my act together and break the cycle. I gleaned ideas from the web, talked to other moms and put a system in place. I use these tips to get up and out the door in 45 minutes each morning.

Use Sunday Wisely Think ahead and prepare for the week on Sunday; it helps save time in the long run.

1

Bag snacks, fruits and veggies for the week to save time on busy sports practice and running-around days. Doing this in advance also gives you a heads up if stocking up on lunchbox staples is necessary, thereby avoiding last-minute shopping trips.

2

Use an organizing system to put together school outfits for the week. I bought a hanging system for my son’s closet with a compartment for each day. Every Sunday, we check the weather for the upcoming week and put outfits in each compartment. Sometimes my son wants to choose his clothes; sometimes he lets me choose. There is never an argument, question, or decision to make about what to wear in the morning.

20 • SanDiegofamily.com • September 2016

3

Put an organizing system by the door for shoes and backpacks. Beth Deig, a local professional organizer and owner of Sorted Nest, recommends an area with hooks for backpacks and a rack below for shoes. Having homework and permission slips ready in the backpack the night before is crucial.

The Night Before

4 5

Make lunches the night before. This includes filling water bottles.

Set the table for breakfast after doing the dinner dishes. You’re already in the kitchen; getting it all done at once makes sense.

In the Morning

6

Keep breakfast simple. Cereal with toast, yogurt or fruit keeps us on the go. Try to sit down and have breakfast as soon as the kids get up. This avoids the grab-and-go breakfast that research shows can lead to obesity. It also helps avoid last-minute spills on school clothes that could cause a meltdown for kids or parents. Andrea Huber, a Del Cerro resident and mom of two, shares her breakfast trick: “When I bake muffins, I always make a double batch and freeze the extras. That way, the kids can just take one out and warm it in the microwave.” If you have a picky eater who wants a hot breakfast, try toaster waffles, makeahead egg muffins or bagels.

Try the Rocket Ship Projection Alarm Clock, which projects NASA images on the ceiling, .has a nightlight timer and wakes kids up in the morning. Learn more at www.BigRedRoosterProducts.com.

8

Most parents agree with Karen McKimmy’s house rule: No electronics before school. They are way too distracting.

9

With older children, get creative! “The most fun way to get my boys out of bed and moving is to turn on music in their rooms,” says Donna Kiernan. “I make it nice and loud and then sing and dance (if necessary), substituting words with phrases about waking up and getting moving. The groans turn into laughter and they start preparing for the school day.” There is no magic and no two families are alike. Figure out what works for your family, then put a system in place. Planning ahead will help start the day in a more positive, less frazzled way. v Cherie Gough is a freelance writer who appreciates practical solutions that make time for enjoying simple pleasures with her two children.

What to Expect at

6th Grade Camp Adventures at Cuyamaca Outdoor School Cuyamaca Outdoor School (COS), often referred to as “6th Grade Camp”, is one of San Diego’s unique, educational treasures. Each year, nearly 12,000 kids attend and learn to appreciate nature by participating in a range of hands-on, science-based activities. Beyond the innovative curriculum, students also develop as individuals by spending an entire school week away from home, in a pristine mountain camp setting. More than one million students have experienced this phenomenal program, which is operated through the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) and offered to all 42 school districts in the county. This year, COS is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The school’s campus is located on 25 acres in the middle of beautiful Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. Students attend with their classmates during the school year, for either a 4- or 5-day adventure. Although most attendees are 6th graders, the camp can also accommodate 5th, 7th and 8th grades. Campers are assigned to cabins staffed by credentialed head teachers and program specialists who hike 22 • SanDiegofamily.com • September 2016

with, teach and mentor the students. Students are supervised at all times, including the overnight hours. Daytime highlights include one all-day adventure, during which kids hike and explore the camp’s wider surroundings, eating lunch in the field. Other popular activities are making rock and wood crafts, rock climbing, archery and geocaching. Kids might choose to hold a snake, learn about raptors, or participate in a talent show. Nighttime favorites include cabin storytelling, night hiking, astronomy and bonding around a traditional campfire. Everyone interacts with nature, meets new people and eats in the dining hall together. Team building, social growth and character development opportunities abound. “We did a teamwork activity where we linked arms as a group and then tried to untangle our circle,” says

former camper Jonah, from Encinitas. “It was really fun! And, I saw a dead deer skeleton. We learned about predators and prey, and relationships in nature.” Campers participate in a variety of outdoor nature activities that are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. According to the COS principal Greg Schuett, the teaching goals are for students to appreciate nature, understand how life functions on Earth, think like a scientist, and reduce human impact on the environment. “Our lessons are aligned with these standards because they are focused on collecting and analyzing data that is focused on the Earth and the effect of human activity on the environment,” explains Schuett. Science lessons are taught by involving students in Citizen Science

Help Kids at Your Child’s School Experience Outdoor Education If your child’s school does not participate in Cuyamaca Outdoor School, contact the principal, PTA and fellow parents to brainstorm how to make it happen. Email Greg Schuett, the COS principal, at gschuett@sdcoe.net for advice on how to get the school involved. The San Diego County Office of Education also helps connect students to nature through outreach programs designed as on-campus field trips. Visit www.sdcoe.net/outdoored for more information.

Simply the

Projects (CSP). One example of a CSP is that students collect information on the leafing, flowering and fruiting of four local plants and send the data to Project BudBurst (www.budburst .org). The scientists then use the students’ data to learn more about the responsiveness of individual plant species to climate change. Another CSP is the Goldspotted Oak Borer Project, relating to an invasive beetle species that is killing oak trees in San Diego County. Students collect data to help understand one way that humans have impacted the environment; the scientists use the students’ data to map the spread of the beetle. For many kids, attending COS represents their first major trip away from home. Understandably, your child (or you!) might be anxious about the upcoming experience. If your child is one of the thousands of local students heading to COS this year, camp staff members suggest a number of measures to help prepare for the experience. • Read through the website at www .sdcoe.net/outdoored for more information. • Attend parent/student orientation at your child’s school.

Here you’ll have the opportunity to see cabins, eat in the dining hall, tour the grounds and try camp activities. Other recommended ways to prepare for camp include going on hikes to break in new shoes and get in shape for the trails, and to practice taking two-minute showers (ensuring that all campers get hot water). Although cell phones are banned at camp, you can send positive, upbeat letters to your child the Saturday before he goes, and provide your child with mailing materials so he can write home. If medical and dietary needs are a concern, note that most can be accommodated, and a nurse is always on site. Scholarships and financial assistance are available. Fifth grade teachers can offer the VanArsdale Essay Contest to their students. Contest winners receive free tuition to camp the following year; the Outdoor Education Foundation (www.sixthgradecamp.org) offers scholarships to one new low-income community school each year; SDCOE offers a limited number of scholarships to schools that have 50 percent or more of their students participate in the state’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Schools can also raise money through donations and fundraisers to help all students attend. Contributions from foundations, corporations and individuals are welcome to ensure schools in less affluent communities are not left out. v Lisa Pawlak is a contributing writer, outdoor enthusiast and mom of two sons.

Get Artsy

Jan Pierce

12 benefits of exposing children to fine arts Fine arts include any activity in which selfexpression bursts forth: drawing, painting, music, drama, photography, cooking and flower arranging. They also encompass artistic expression such as working with clay, creating mosaics, three-dimensional paper creations, puppetry, making mobiles and more. There are many benefits to providing experiences for children in the fine arts. If your child is not receiving fine arts education at school, consider enrolling him in afterschool music or art lessons or drama classes. As a family, take your children to local art museums and introduce them to folk art, sculpture or oil paintings. Exposing children to fine arts can be as simple as supplying an art corner in your family room, singing songs together or reading poetry aloud. Here are 12 benefits of engaging in artistic activities:

26 • SanDiegofamily.com • September 2016

1.

Fine motor skills improve.

5.

Decision-making skills develop.

Handling paintbrushes, drawing with a pencil and cutting safely with scissors require precision. Correct placement of fingers on piano keys, learning to play a scale and strumming a guitar build motor skills.

When creating any piece of art, a series of decisions is made: What color, what shape, how big or small? Should I use watercolor or tempera? Art lends itself to experimentation that inspires creativity in other areas of life.

2.

6.

Language skills are enhanced.

Creative expression is learned.

Children learn a whole new vocabulary when they enter the world of the arts. They learn names of famous painters, terms regarding color and shape, and they learn to identify artistic processes and concepts.

Children who sing, act or create art learn to express their feelings (and themselves) in many different ways— with or without words.

3.

Children who tend to be shy or fearful develop confidence when taking part in the arts. Singing with a group, reciting a poem with classmates or “taking a chance” with bright purple paint works to build confidence in the decisionmaking process.

Visual-spatial skills develop.

Children learn how to connect pieces of three-dimensional work and how to manipulate clay and other mediums into various shapes.

4.

Cultural awareness increases.

In art appreciation, children discover diversity in artistic expression from around the world. They build cultural awareness as they compare African masks with those created by Alaskan natives.

7.

8.

Confidence is boosted.

Empathy is practiced.

Since there is not just one way to create, children in the arts learn to embrace multiple points of view. If 10 children draw an apple, there will be 10 different apples. And that’s OK.

Did you know? Admission to San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park is now free for youth ages 17 and under! Plan your visit at www.sdmart.org.

9.

Critical thinking skills are strengthened. Art helps children learn to observe, describe, analyze and interpret. These critical thinking skills will be necessary in academic subjects such as math, science and writing.

10.

Expectations stabilize.

Children learn to reflect on a project and find ways to improve or change. No one expects perfection the first time around. They envision how they might say a line or project their voice in the next performance. They brainstorm different ways to sculpt or paint next time.

Children learn collaboration.

Working in a singing group, acting a part in a play or working on a class mural are projects that require communication, shared goals and working side-by-side to achieve those goals.

12.

If you like LEGO® bricks, you’ll LOVE this!

Grades improve.

A 10-year study by Shirley Heath of Stanford University shows that children who participate regularly in the arts achieve better grades than those children who don’t have that luxury. Not only is it beneficial to expose children to the fine arts, it’s fun! However you choose to do it, your efforts will pay off. So get artsy—and watch your children bloom. v Jan Pierce is a retired teacher and freelance writer.

Discover

the Future with

Robotics Lisa Pawlak

Global Reach of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)

Many parents caught

their first glimpse of a robot decades ago, while watching futuristic TV shows such as “Lost in Space” or “The Jetsons.” These days, kids dream of robot sidekicks like the adorably loyal BB-8 from “Star Wars” or helpful and humorous Baymax from “Big Hero 6.” In reality, robots are being used in the workplace, in medical environments, in the home, in leisure activities and more. Whatever else the future brings, it is clear that robots will play an integral part. Encouraging kids to pursue STEMrelated careers might be of interest given such a world—and youth robotics programs offer one such option. Along with learning how to build “bots”, involved participants (and their parents) are often pleasantly surprised that robotics experiences involve much more than simply developing technical skills.

400,000+............... students 44,000+.......................teams 37,000+....... robots created 100,000+..... mentors/adult supporter roles filled $22 million+......... in college scholarships

All participants—whether STEM-driven or otherwise—will benefit from the wide range of life lessons and practical skills honed in robotics. Kids can become part of a competitive team, learn from professional mentors, improve problem-solving abilities, participate in fundraising, increase time management

skills, recruit new members, experience leadership, strengthen communication skills and qualify for millions of dollars in college scholarships. At the heart of robotics education, you’ll find the nonprofit FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). FIRST’s mission is “to inspire young people

to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentorbased programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.” Globally, more than 400,000 kids (grades K-12) are involved with FIRST’s robotics programs, comprising more than 44,000 teams. Kids prepare for and compete in exciting, annual challenges that combine the thrills of sports competition with the rigors of science and technology. High school sophomore Sarah Parkes, who participated in FIRST during the 2015-16 school year as part of San Dieguito Academy’s Team Paradox, discovered a newfound love of robotics. It was an exciting time to join; the team placed first in San Diego’s regional competition at the Del Mar fairgrounds, ultimately traveling to compete at the annual FIRST world championship event in St. Louis in April. “If I wasn’t on the robotics team, I don’t know where I would be now,” says Parkes. “Robotics is one huge family. We all depend on each other and I think that’s a big part of why our team is successful. [Team] Paradox has opened my mind to the possibilities in STEM and helped me

build up a work ethic that assists me in my general education.” Team Paradox is one of thousands of teams involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) division, designed for grades 9-12. Teams of 10+ members design, build and compete with 120-pound robots. Working alongside professional mentors— including engineers and computer programmers—they develop both hardware and software skills. Team members are also responsible for non-technical competition elements, such as overall project management, marketing, general operations and strategic thinking skills. According to FIRST, the documented benefits of FRC involvement are clear. Participation results in over 88 percent of members having more interest in school; 90 percent having more interest in challenging math and science courses; and 90 percent showing more interest in attending college. Participants are twice as likely to major in science or engineering. It’s never too early to get involved; there are three other FIRST program options for younger children: FIRST Lego League Jr. (Jr. FLL) offers kids in grades K–3, the opportunity to design and build models out of Legos, using motorized elements. For grades 4–8, FIRST Lego League (FLL) teams build

robots using the Lego Mindstormbased platform and develop a related research project. Core values, such as gracious professionalism and teamwork are emphasized and awarded. The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) encourages kids in grades 7–12 to develop innovative engineering skills by building and programming robots from reusable kits. “One of the most amazing parts of being at the world championships in St. Louis was that we were able to catch a glimpse of the FIRST community,” says Parkes. “With 600 teams being a fraction of the total number of active teams, it’s crazy to think of how many people just like me are involved.” University of California, San Diego engineering professor Geno Pawlak, who attended the championship event this year with Team Paradox, has also mentored an FLL team. “These robotics kids are the world’s future leaders,” he says. “They are bright, motivated, organized, and full of hope and vision. I can’t imagine a more productive activity for them to be involved with.” In addition to FIRST programs, there are many other quality robotics opportunities across the county, including school electives, afterschool programs and camps. If your child’s school doesn’t have a program, check with community recreation centers, technology hubs or visit www .FirstInspires.org to get involved. Many teams start forming in September to plan the year’s activities. v Lisa Pawlak is a contributing writer and enthusiastic robotics volunteer. Pam Molnar

My son’s middle school principal

recently challenged his students to raise $25,000 to build a school in Ghana through the nonprofit organization, Pencils of Promise. The $25,000 fund was in addition to money we donated to the PTA for school events. At first, it seemed like an impossible task, but with 1,200 students, that came to just $21 per student.

Choose a sporting event such as cornhole, mini golf, jump rope or basketball— consider doing more than one. Get everyone involved in the fun!

Sports Tournament Choose a sporting event such as cornhole, mini golf, jump rope or basketball—consider doing more than one. Get everyone involved in the fun! Try students versus teachers for a basketball tournament, boys against girls in a jump rope contest, classroom versus classroom for a field day event or parents versus kids in a game of Minute to Win It. Charge each participant a small entrance fee.

The principal challenged them to find a way to support this project through their own fundraising, not a school-wide wrapping paper sale or golf outing. My son’s basketball team raised money through a free throw contest. Kids in the sewing club made scarves in school colors and sold them during lunch periods. Some individuals offered to do odd jobs to help raise money.

Wall of Money

Before the end of the school year, the students exceeded their goal. Why was this style of fundraising more successful for us than selling popcorn and wrapping paper? Because the community came together and the kids were invested—they put the fun back in fundraising. Here are ways your school or community organization can raise funds for their next project:

Here’s a fun way for the whole school to participate: Each day, the principal announces a “Which do you prefer?” question. For example, “Do you like cats or dogs?” Students and staff “vote” daily by adding a penny to the bucket labeled with their preference. The following morning, the principal reads the winning answer and asks the next question. Offer Five-Cent Friday

Place 100 envelopes (numbered $1– $100) on a wall near the school office. When a donor has cash to donate, he selects the corresponding envelope, fills it and turns it in to the office. When all envelopes are filled, you will have collected $5,050.

A Penny for Your Thoughts

At Open House, put the principal, PE teacher or school mascot in “jail.” Place two “officers” outside the “cell” holding cashboxes. Parents, staff and students give money to the officers to either keep the staff member in jail ($1) or bail him out ($5).

Silent Auction Parents, staff and community members donate items for the auction. Classrooms may want to sponsor themed gift baskets (spa, grilling, movies, baking, holiday, etc.). Other auction items could include lunch with a teacher, Principal for a Day or a front row parking spot in the school lot (good for one year).

Carnival Go as large or small as you want. Rent bounce houses, dunk tanks and lawn games. Create your own ping pong toss, pick a sucker, ring toss or balloon darts. Families purchase tickets to play games. Affordable prizes are available at Oriental Trading or discount stores. Consider having a “puppy love” booth: Bring in adoptable dogs from a local shelter that participants can hug, kiss or take a photo with for a small fee.

Car Boot Sale Much like a garage sale, a car boot sale (or trunk sale) is a win-win situation. Parents or staff can gather unwanted items and sell them out of the trunk of their cars in the school parking lot. Offer parking spots for $5-$10 each. All proceeds go to your cause. Setting up booths with food and drinks will help keep shoppers around longer. v Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She has helped raise funds as a PTA member, Girl Scout leader and softball mom.

The beauty of this historic gold mining town (just 60

miles northeast of San Diego) is that most of its attractions are within walking distance of each other. It’s the perfect place to explore, sustained by apple pie, of course.

Lake Cuyamaca Fish, rent a paddleboat, camp, picnic and hike around this 110-acre lake located nine miles from Julian. Look for the wooden bear statue and stone maze on Fletcher Island or hike to the remains of Stonewall Mine, the largest producing mine in Julian and once the site of Cuyamaca City, which had a population of 500. There’s a small cabin with an exhibit on its history. 15027 Hwy. 79 www.lakecuyamaca.org
