At this camp, current instrumental students can continue to improve their skills, while students that don’t play an instrument can begin to learn one! Westglades Middle School will host an instrumental Summer Music Camp June 13-17. Camp will take place at Westglades Middle School from 9:00AM - 4:00PM each day. Registration is open to upcoming 6th through 8th grade students.

Instruments that will be taught at this camp will be: flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and bass. The camp schedule will include time in full band rehearsals as well as small group instruction. Students will be placed in small groups based on their instrument (i.e. all flutes together, all trumpets together), and will work with a professional on their instrument daily. Students will receive instruction on furthering their music skills to prepare them for All-State Auditions, All-County Auditions, and their school music classes next year. Structured team building time will also be included in the schedule.

Current music students who play an instrument will spend their time at camp improving their musical skills on that instrument and will be placed into full band and sectionals based on their skill level. Skill-based placement will allow all students to move at a pace specific to their skill level.

New Music Students - no experience required! Students who don’t currently play an instrument are highly encouraged to attend camp! Students new to playing an instrument will be introduced to all the instrument choices, and will be able to try out all the instruments to see which is the best fit! Once an instrument is chosen, students will learn everything they need to know about playing that instrument. Students will spend each day learning the fundamentals of playing, including but not limited to: instrument maintenance, assembly, and care; reading music notation; counting rhythms; instrument carriage; making sounds; finger/hand placement; and eventually playing songs!

New students that attend Music camp will find that they will be ahead of students in their classes when they begin Band or Orchestra in 6th grade. This can allow for special opportunities for those students, possibly even resulting in students moving up to a higher level band or orchestra class at their school (this is not guaranteed, as it is up to the director at the school).
