Dear Readers,

Happy 2023! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday and your 2023 is off to a good start. Hopefully, you had the opportunity to attend some of the city’s holiday events. They always put on spectacular events. Make sure to check out our Events Page so you know what is happening in Pembroke Pines for February-April. You won’t want to miss the Egg Hunt, Kindness Day, Pines Night Out, and so many more!

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? Are you sticking to them? Most people usually want to lose weight and get healthy. If that is one of your goals, check out our Health Section, where you’ll find a bevy of places for health and fitness.

As this is our February-April issue, you will see we have added a CAMP SECTION because it is our Spring Break & Preview to Summer Camp issue. You want to start thinking about Summer Camps early because they all get booked up fast. Camps are a great experience for children of all ages. There are many benefits to sending your child to camp. There are tons of activities each day, and they spend plenty of time outdoors with other children. Camp is also shown to promote many developmental skills and increase independence. Plus, for parents who work, it is the best option. Once you look at our Camp Section you will see there are many camps to choose from including sports, art, and chess. There’s something for everyone. Hopefully, you will find one perfectly suited for your child. When you sign up for a camp, please don’t forget to tell them you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory. Now that Spring is upon us and the cooler weather is here, try to do more fun stuff outdoors with your family. My new thing for 2023 is to do more and not just work. Life is too short, and we need to enjoy it!

My best to you,

Linda

Dear Readers,

It is always very exciting to start a new year with hope, resolutions and the knowledge that changes are inevitable but can also be exhilarating. We have many events, activities and programs planned throughout our city for 2023 for residents of all ages. Please be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Next Door and on our website at www.ppines.com for all the information you’ll need regarding activities, programs, and what’s happening in the city.

The City of Pembroke Pines has initiated a project for the replacement of aging residential water meters, 20-years old or older, throughout the City. This program is necessary to ensure continued accurate billing for all Utility customers. The new water meter will be equipped for mobile drive-by reading, eliminating manual entry of your monthly meter reading and will contain components to capture consumption usage on an hourly/daily basis and in graph format. This information, when requested, can help residents better understand monthly water usage habits or to determine if there is a leak. RTS Water Solutions, LLC/Envocore will perform this work. Be sure to watch for your water meter notification -- If you are a part of this program, you will receive two Door Hanger notifications. The contractor will place the 1st Door Hanger Notification (a white door hanger) on your front door within 2 weeks prior to when the work will start. The contractor will then place a second Door Hanger Notification (a white door hanger) on your front door once your water meter has been replaced. For more information or if there are questions, please contact the City of Pembroke Pines Utilities Department at 954-518-9000.

Many residents have also reached out to me on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. Clean Harbors Environmental Services provides quarterly household hazardous waste drop off events for Pembroke Pines residents. The drop off events are held at the City’s wastewater treatment plant located at 13975 Pembroke Road. The hours of operation are 8 am to 2 pm. The 2023 scheduled dates are: March 4, 2023, June 3, 2023, September 9, 2023, and December 9, 2023.

Residents must bring proof of Pembroke Pines residency to use the drop off services. For a more complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please visit www.ppines.com of if you have a question, call 954-518-9000.

Another quick reminder - now through March 10, 2023, Florida residents are invited to enroll their child(ren) into the 2023-2024 school year lottery for the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School System (PPCSS). For more info, please go to www.pinescharter.net.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at 954-450-1020, or by e-mail at fortis@ppines.com. Wishing you all a great, safe and prosperous new year!

From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines
