Dear Readers,

As we begin a new school year, I hope you had a fun summer and had some family time to relax, enjoy, and make new memories. Now it’s back to the hustle and bustle of school, schedules, and routines. I hope your child is ready for all the new classes, friends, and experiences that will come with this new school year.

I would like to share some of my summer with you. My family and I took a road trip throughout Germany. My mother-in-law was born there and came to this country as a teenager, so it was wonderful to experience the country with someone who has lived there. We got to go to the house she grew up in and meet her family, which was lovely. We traveled to about seven areas from Frankfurt to Berlin. What a beautiful country, full of good food and good people. Spending time with family is the best! When I returned home, I was surprised to find out I was a recipient of a Pinnacle Award from the Miramar Pembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce. That was truly an honor for me! If you own a business you should consider being a part of the Chamber. They are a valuable tool to help businesses in the community grow. As this is our Back-to-School issue, you will find everything you need for your child’s return to the classroom. Where to sign them up for sports, what afterschool activities there are, where to have their birthday party, and so much more! Let your child explore something new if they show an interest. Did you know we also have things for adults? Don’t forget to check out our Events Page where you will find all sorts of outings to enjoy with your family. The City of Pembroke Pines does tons of events and most of them are free.

Please stop by to visit our advertisers and let them know you saw them in Sports & Activities Directory. If you have a sweet tooth like I do, check out The Peach Cobbler Factory for their decadent treats, or for the best ice cream in town, check out Cleveland’s Ice Cream Parlor located in Miramar.

Wishing you and your family a wonderful school year.

All my best to you, Linda

Dear Readers,

Recently I announced that I will not be seeking re-election in March 2024. I have had the honor and privilege of being the Mayor of this great City of Pembroke Pines for 19 years, preceded by 8 years serving as a Commissioner. This was a difficult decision because I love being your Mayor, but the time has come. For now, I am here, as your Mayor, and loving every minute of it. This is not a goodbye. There is still much work to be done and I am dedicated to doing the best job possible for all residents.

This year marks the 22nd Anniversary of the horrifying terrorist attack on the U.S. On Monday, September 11, 2023 the City of Pembroke Pines will remember and honor the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during those attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Shanksville, Pennsylvania during a special ceremony. It will be held from 8:30AM to 10:30AM at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way.

This solemn ceremony, which is free, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. All ages are encouraged to attend. It will also include guest speakers, community leaders and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. Those in attendance are encouraged to tour the statues that are part of Memorial Park. For more information regarding the City of Pembroke Pines observance of the 9/11 Anniversary or Patriot Day, please call (954) 392-2116.

Please be sure to mark your calendars and tell your friends about the Annual Veterans Employment Expo which will take place on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center Campus, located at 301 NW 103 Ave.

If you are a veteran in need of a job, I strongly encourage you to attend. It’s a great opportunity to meet directly with hiring managers in our area, from a variety of companies and organizations. Here in Pembroke Pines, we appreciate the support our veterans have received from the business community, and we especially appreciate our veterans for their service. For more information, please call the Center at (954) 450-6888

September 10th marks the peak of our hurricane season. According to weather experts, about 75% of Atlantic hurricane seasons since the start of the weather satellite era have had a named storm on this date. What does that mean for us? Simply that we must continue to be hurricane prepared. Please check out our Pembroke Pines Prepared Hurricane Resources at As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020, or by email at fortis@ppines.com.

From your Mayor,

Frank C. Ortis City of Pembroke Pines
