W ho knows how a violin creates its beautiful sound, or how a bassoon is able to create its unforgettable tone! Bringing music into schools through scholarships and concerts is the most important thing for Weston Music Society (WMS).

This 2022/23 school year, WMS brought amazing, free, educational concerts to four Weston elementary schools with our In-School Music Program, giving the students an opportunity to learn and experience new instruments and exciting sounds.

WMS, with the woodwind quartet from the Symphony of the Americas, gave Everglades Elementary, Manatee Bay, Country Isles and Gator Run the opportunity to attend a concert this past fall, and to learn some amazing new things. Children were able to ask questions and see for themselves how an oboe creates its playful sound, and how the clarinet can jam out to modern music.

Not only does WMS understand how important music is for schools through concerts and scholarships, but WMS also gives the whole community the opportunity to experience music.

WMS hosted the Second Annual Dance Party with Olaf on December 3, 2022. “Our Dance Fever Dance Party is a family fun event in Weston Town Center. It is a new event, and it is magical to witness people of all ages dancing the evening away,” said Gina Catone, WMS president.

Every May, WMS offers more than ten high schoolers from the City of Weston a scholarship to pursue music. “The Matching Scholarship Program highlights the generosity of our fellow Weston residents. Eighty percent of the sponsors are Weston residents. We have thirteen scholarships which we will be awarding in May,” noted Gina Catone. We are always looking for like-minded Board Members and new members to continue our mission of bringing music to the community in Weston. We offer opportunities for our members and Board Members to get involved, be part of the community, and give back through something we all love: music.

Working closely with the City of Weston, WMS has offered many concerts throughout the years. Last April, WMS, the City of Weston, and South Florida Symphony presented a splendid outdoor concert offering a wide variety of music which completely delighted our community. Gina Catone said, “South Florida Symphony amazed the audience with vocalists and musicians providing a vast selection of musical entertainment. WMS is looking forward to its April 1st performance in Weston Town Center.”

This familyfriendly event will feature educational booths, hands-on activities, arts and crafts, live chalk artist, and a live DJ with music and giveaways.Learn about the City’s Community Wildlife Habitat designation through the National Wildlife Federation, and how residents can register their own gardens or yards, too.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE AND ELECTRONICS COLLECTION EVENT

9:00AM-3:00PM. Weston Public Works Services Center, 2599 South Post Road. Put aside items that cannot be placed into the trash or put out for bulk pickup, and bring them to the annual FREE Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection event and they will be recycled or disposed of properly without harming the environment. Simply pull up and drop off your items. Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) refers to used or leftover contents of consumer products that contain chemicals with one of the four characteristics: Toxic, Ignitable, Corrosive, or Reactive as defined by the Environmental Protection Agency. What items are being accepted? Oil and latex paints and thinners, used motor oil, auto fluids and gasoline solvents, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, tires, mercury, fire extinguishers, rechargeable & automobile batteries and electronics such as computers and televisions will be accepted. The collection event is open to Weston residents and residents of participating cities; must bring proof of residency.
