Students at Tequesta Trace Middle School got the chance to meet awardwinning children’s book author, Christina Diaz Gonzalez on Wednesday, March 16th! The author successfully engaged students with a multimedia presentation about her novels and encouraged students to be patient with the writing process, emphasizing the importance of revising. Tequesta Trace students were also grateful for the opportunity to ask the author questions and participate in a book-signing event. Check out the pictures of Tequesta Trace’s students enjoying this memorable event.

Prior to Christina’s arrival, the TTMS Literacy Team, along with Social Studies and Language Arts teachers, had students focus on three of Christina’s novels: Moving Target in 6th grade, The Red Umbrella in 7th grade, and A Thunderous Whisper in 8th grade. Furthermore, students in 7th grade were provided a direct connection to the main character of Christina’s novel, The Red Umbrella, by having a special visit from Miguel Lasaga. Mr. Lasaga shared his first-hand experience as a child during the Pedro Pan Operation, an event in which over 14,000 unaccompanied children left Cuba and came to the United States to escape Fidel Castro’s Revolution in the 1960s. The Red Umbrella is on the novel list for Florida’s new BEST Standards for Language Arts.
