Q

C

Tell us about yourself Charlie, where are you from originally? What do you do?

I’m a Denver native - I grew up in suburban Aurora where, in 1987 (during my last year of high school) I studied cosmetology through a vocational program to become a hairdresser. I have had a wonderful career creating beauty for over 32 years in my hometown seeing clients- and around the world styling hair for NY Fashion week and entertaining, educating and inspiring other hairdressers as an industry educator.

Q

How have you seen the Fashion industry change in Denver over the last 20 years? 10 years? 5 years?

C

I remember when we had a big fashion moment in the 1980s due to the TV show Dynasty set in Denver - and the excesses of the oil boom. I also remember the “ups and downs” since. Over the last decade it has been great to see Denver arrive as the “it city” that we natives always thought it would be - with that, the interest in fashion has also grown. I love that we have an independent pioneer spirit here - with regard to fashion and every thing else in life. We do it all unapologetically on our own terms.

Q

C

How did you get involved with the Denver Fashion Week?

I created Denver Fashion Week with the publisher and his staff at 303 Magazine - which I also used to work for as well. We started off with it being a one night affair that celebrated the work of local salons to watching it swell into one of the fastest growing fashion weeks in the country. Last season we had European fashion journalists from Elle Finland and were featured in Forbes Magazine. I have since resigned my position as Creative Director due to what I feel was censorship of my liberal political views by the co-founder. I know that this will continue to be a vibrant signature event for the city with or without my participation - and I am so proud of what we built together even if I can not support it personally.

Q

Who was the most famous person you worked on?

C

Over the years at NY and Milan Fashion weeks I have tended the locks of many famous models - but my all time favorite was Naomi Campbell.

Q

If you weren’t a hair stylist, what would you be?

C Q C

I have always dreamed of being a famous painter, fashion designer or film director.

What are your goals for the next 5 years?

I want to continue to work supporting the craft of hairdressing through my committee

work at the North American Hairstyling Awards and sponsorship of The International Hairdressing Awards in Madrid. I want to continue to nurture Beauty Underground Magazine and to find new ways to create with my colleagues who are part of The Beauty Underground -a collective of internationally known hair and makeup people (that I co-founded ) who come together in various ways as industry advocates as well as to express our artistry as a group. Finally I look forward to growing the Southwest Hairstyling Awards with my co-founders at The Hair USA Awards - we will manage regional awards around all sections of the country.

Q

C

If you could give advice for women in general, what would you say?

Vote Democrat give money to Planned Parenthood -don’t live your life to make men happy. Wear your hair in a way that pleases you and you only.

6 Home Design Trends Due to the Pandemic by Jacqueline Chavanu

6 Home Design Trends Due to the Pandemic By Jacqueline Chavanu Since the beginning of the pandemic wave in the US one thing is clear, many of us have adapted to a “new normal” in the way we live and function in our homes. Working from home, schooling children, and even a resurgence in planting “Victory Gardens”--a pastime that became popular during WWII have taken hold while we wait out the pandemic at home. Based on what buyers are looking for when purchasing a new home and what home owners are requesting for interior and exterior design

1.The Home Office is a Must Have

projects, six trends are emerging that you’ll want to consider when buying, selling or remodeling.

It has become apparent that working from home will be a permanent fixture for many households. Video-conferencing technology like Microsoft Teams and Zoom, along with connectivity protocols such as VPN--so staff can securely access company resources remotely--working from home is much easier and more accessible than ever. Twitter, for instance, has adopted a work-from-home model that allows staff to keep working from home “forever” if they wish. With this trend, designers are helping homeowners reimagine existing spaces and thinking outside the box to come up with creative ways to establish new areas for a dedicated home office. Not only is a dedicated “focus space” critical but design elements (like a pleasing but professional backdrop for online meetings) are important factors when configuring a home office. The home office (otherwise known as the generic “den) was once a nice-to-have and now it’s a priority. Jenni Thompson, realtor with West + Main Homes says, “A dedicated home office is now a top priority for buyers when they are looking to purchase a home.

Buyers are getting creative when house hunting and many are reimagining

the garage or outdoor sheds as an area to convert into a home office or classroom.”

2.Short on Space? Be Flexible While the pandemic has the created the need for more places to take calls and do homework many don’t have multiple rooms just sitting idle, waiting for this moment. That means using what space you have for multiple purposes, perhaps changing it up multiple times per day. Spaces need to become adaptable for various uses. Converting, say, a little used formal dining room might mean removing the banquet table and replacing it with modular furnishings such as folding or rolling tables, whiteboards and partitions. Multiple, smaller work surfaces can easily be separated for individualized environments for grade school and high school students and then pushed together for family activities like board games or puzzles. Sound-absorbing partitions (like this one) can make it easier for mom to take her Zoom call while the kids work on their homework nearby. For a more permanent solution you might also choose to invest in built-in fold-down desk units that take up very little floor space when not in use or wall-mounted, fold-out room partitions that effectively create two rooms out of one in seconds.

Chavanu Interiors is a full-service interior design studio specializing in residential and boutique commercial projects. Jacqueline is a creative who believes in the power of beautiful interiors to transform daily life. Chavanu Interiors was formed out of a love of interior design history and garners an aesthetic that is effortlessly chic combining both old and new elements. Using her gifts to help clients love their spaces while bringing joy to their homes is why she does what she does! Her work has been featured in leading design and lifestyle publications that include Better Homes & Gardens and Seattle Homes. Her projects over the years have spanned throughout Colorado and from Seattle to New Orleans.

3. Zen Space is the Place to Just Be The “Zen Room” is a trend on the rise during the lockdown and pandemic as a complement to the home office or classroom space. The Zen Room is a dedicated place designed to get away from the pressures of using the home for daily routines--a peaceful space that harbors spa-like qualities evoking balance, harmony and relaxation. It’s a place to get away from the home classroom (a.k.a. kitchen table), the home office (a.k.a. dining room table), cooking, cleaning and general chaos. You can create a Zen space in a spare bedroom, large closet, or basement nook and it can function as a space for yoga, meditation, creative activities or just a need to get away undisturbed. Autonomous.ai, a website noted for its smart office solutions, is taking preorders for a Zen Pod, a 68 square foot freestanding structure that fits in your backyard. The pod comes furnished with a smart desk, chair and built-in bookshelves and is made with sustainable oak, walnut, aluminum and tempered glass. According to the website, “The Zen Work Pod is an exciting, fresh solution completely redefining the home office, providing maximum focus during every working hour. The ultimate private workspace built just for you.” Check it out, here, (https://www.autonomous.ai/zen-work-pod) The pod design feels very open featuring two glass walls and a 10’ ceiling. Prices begin at $5,400 and go up to $13,500 and is selling out quickly.

4. Hygiene is Essential During the Coronavirus we have learned that washing hands, wearing face masks and gloves are essential to help “flatten the curve”. This has made us think differently about the owners entry, a dedicated space between the front door and the house, and leads to the return of the mudroom. This area is an ideal spot to remove shoes, take off masks and slather on sanitizer before stepping inside. Furthermore, adding a sink with a touchless faucet in the mudroom (and kitchen) is becoming increasingly popular. Even for homes that don’t have the luxury of a separate mudroom, there is an increased focus on creating a clean and organized “drop zone” in the garage so germs are mitigated at the door. As a response to toilet paper panic-purchasing and the subsequent TP shortages at stores across the country, more and more are investing in bidet attachments. We purchased an inexpensive model in March (see hellotushy.com) and had to wait two months before receiving the order due to demand but the purchase was worth the wait. A bidet (whether it’s a standalone fixture, integrated into a new toilet or aftermarket add-on) could become an increasingly popular item when designing a bathroom as well as a key real estate word in a home listing.

5. Backyard Getaways

The pandemic is taking staycations to a whole new level which has led to a priority in creating a backyard resort escape. We are now watching movies under a starry sky when theaters are closed, grilling and outdoor kitchens when restaurants are not an option and escaping to backyard “glamping” setups when hotels and pools are shut down. There has been a spike in sales for pools and spas and other accessories like fountains and outdoor lighting to make the backyard feel like a bonified getaway. Another emerging trend is that many are opting out of large wedding venues and replacing them instead with quaint backyard ceremonies. Since smaller gatherings are currently recommended by the CDC, having a wedding in a backyard resort creates an ideal alternative with which to tie the knot.

6. COVID Victory Garden During World War II when fresh food was in short supply or being officially rationed, families started growing vegetable and fruit gardens to help sustain themselves during tough times and give extra to others who needed help. This year Colorado State University Extension launched Grow and Give, “a modern Victory Garden project designed to encourage Coloradans to grow a vegetable garden and plant extra to give to local food banks and community members in need.” This is my second year of serious gardening and I can attest to the shortage of seed packages I encountered in early April when I was beginning the planting process! Now, during the summer harvest, I feel great to donating extra fresh vegetables to local food banks. “During a time when there is so much bad news and uncertainty, we are giving Coloradans a positive opportunity to contribute locally,” explained Katie Dunker, statewide coordinator for the CSU Extension Master Gardener program. “We have wrapped our arms around something that is very tangible and accessible and are taking university resources and expertise in growing food to every corner of the state to help those in need. This is what Extension does; this is who we are. Education and outreach are the very fabric of what a land-grant university does.” There are plenty of online resources for the novice gardener and you can get started in almost any size container. I believe this new reliance on the home will continue indefinitely and will begin to reshape the way homes are designed, built and remodeled to accommodate flexible spaces, areas specified for hygiene, food storage and an increased focus on outdoor spaces. The pandemic has affected the way I approach design and has expanded my thoughts on the way we live in our homes. Comforting spaces, creating sanctuaries along with technology are key elements going into the future of home design.

Franchising...Why Now? meet Careyann G0lliver

Careyann Golliver

Q

C

Tell us about yourself Careyann, where are you from originally? What do you do?

I am a proud Colorado native, a dog lover who enjoys a healthy and active lifestyle alongside my husband, Travis that includes tennis, hiking and hunting. I am known as America’s Franchise Matchmaker.™

Q

C

Why franchising?

Franchising allows you to go into business for yourself but not by yourself. Franchising allows you to take control and be directly rewarded for your hard work and efforts. For a majority of people, franchising has proven to be a viable way to become a business owner. For the most part it offers the lowest risks and the highest level of support. Because a franchisor doesn’t succeed until the franchisees do, you’ll find a team of dedicated professionals willing and able to help you every step of the way, from site selection to employee hiring to grand opening.

They will keep in touch with you from the very beginning to years down the road and they have web sites, toll free numbers and a dedicated staff to make sure all your questions are answered quickly. Research and development is possible because of feedback from those in the field and this cooperative involvement is a hallmark of a well-run franchise business. The final benefit of franchising is that you buy a package – product or service, brand name and trademarks, marketing and advertising, operations manuals and proven systems – along with thorough training in every aspect of the business. You can totally change careers without years of schooling or apprenticeship or research.

Q

What is a franchise Consultant?

C

A franchise consultant is someone who consults you through the twists and turns of the franchise world and teaches you how to work your way through it. Whether you are a franchisor or a franchisee, there is a benefit to using a franchise consultant. Having a specific person to answer the big questions about franchising and being successful can do wonders for growth within a franchise. In addition, potential franchisees don’t necessarily know what they want, how to get there, and where to start. A franchise consultant can help with all of this and more. A consultant can help you consider your interests and skills and determine what the best possible franchise matches could be considered or even if it is the right path for them to be a franchise owner. They help them every step of the way by matching them to the potential right fit, helping guide them how to conduct a proper due diligence. Any good consultant should not charge a fee for their services due to the fact they are paid directly from the franchisor if they make a successful match based on a finder’s fee.

Q

C

Are all franchise systems the same??

No they are all not created equal! Being a franchisor for over a decade, I can certainly tell you it is vitally important to conduct validation and speak with existing franchisees that bought the concept you evaluate for yourself, along with reviewing their Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD).

Read completely along with evaluating the personality of the franchise brand to make sure you are a fit. Remember it is meant to be a business marriage so courtship will be paramount. You certainly would not want to get into a business partnership with someone who truly doesn’t care about your success or doesn’t provide solid training and support. I created a free digital download on How to Buy a Franchise, 10 Costly mistakes to avoid to help people know what to look for.

Q

C

Is owning a franchise more expensive than starting your own business?

When you buy a franchise, you are buying the rights to someone else’s proven business plan. The model, the uniqueness, the operations, the marketing, training, support and technology is all figured out. The value of time as a person to have to find all of this and put everything together when starting your own business is priceless. When you buy a franchise you are buying speed to market. This way, your time and your money go toward making the money instead of trying to figure out how you are going to make the money with your own vision. Reality is, we can nearly cut in half the break even time with a franchise concept, simply because it is proven and you will simply execute in your desired geographic area. Ultimately franchises do not cost more than starting your own business because of time value and risk factors.

an owner who is not an industry expert, but instead hires people who can the day to day work, giving the franchisee time to focus on growing and managing the business. You bring the entrepreneurial spirit and in exchange, they give you the training and support.

Q

Q

C

You can’t be in a business you know nothing about – right?

That is a huge myth! Often people believe they have to be the expert in whatever business they choose. With a franchise, you are partnering with the experts - the franchisor. Every business operates the same way and when you decide to become a franchise owner, the first decision you make is what role you want to play in the business. Do you want to be the “expert” and not deal with any employees? Do you want to keep your day job, hire a General Manager who runs the business on a daily basis and you build additional wealth and income outside of your 9-5? When you become a franchise owner, you elevate yourself from the employeeexpert to the Executive - Operating President or CEO. Required transferable skillsets from your past career will be leadership and management. Surprisingly most franchisors prefer

C

Why would someone choose to own a franchise over another business?

Franchising is not a fit for everyone. If you have your own vision, endless amounts of capital to invest, don’t like following rules set by others and want to run your show and not have to report to anyone another business would be a better choice. A franchise has a built in blue-print for you to execute. The franchisor when creating the model has already done all the testing and made all the mistakes along the way to create a proven model. Their job is to make sure you don’t make those same mistakes so you have a speed to market and have the best chance to grow successfully and quicker than starting something on your own.

Q

Do Franchisors charge hefty fees for their own profit?

C

Wrong! As a franchisee, your payments to the franchisor consist on a one-time fee to buy the rights to expand their brand in your geographic desired area. Then, every franchisee pays royalties back into the overall system. These are typically weekly or monthly payments incurred for the life of the actual franchise agreement. It is vital to understand the actual purpose of the royalties. Without them, there would be no franchise. It allows the franchisor to build and most importantly maintain a comprehensive support system to aggressively develop its marketing programs -- to innovate and stay on the cutting edge of their industry. It’s a win-win for all involved. Without it, there would simply be no franchise system which, by the way, is the most valuable aspect of what the franchisee is buying afterall. Most franchisees feel the benefits are well worth the expense. Additionally, advertising contributions from each franchisee is also an expense. Marketing is key to any successful business so it would be wrong to require only one partner in this business marriage to be responsible for these obligations. Not marketing is a sure fire way to fail at any business so it is a huge advantage when the franchisor has already tested the marketing and knows what works and what doesn’t.

Q

C

Franchising only applies to Fast Food, right?

There is a lot more to franchising than french fries! With nearly 4,000+ franchises today in the US, many are nonfood related such as service based. Rather

than focus on a certain industry of franchise brand, take an inventory of your skillsets, interests, experience and your goals. Be anchored by reality to define how much you can really afford with a franchise and what your income expectations are as well.

Q

C

Most have to quit their job to start their franchise - how do they choose wisely?

Wrong! While many are choosing to fire their boss and escape corporate America by becoming a franchise owner, there are plenty of satisfied corporate executives that are seeking diversification or building a transition path so that in the next 1.5-2 years they could fire their boss and become FT involved in a franchise. Some never leave their corporate position and scale through manager run franchises while keeping their pay check.Simply put you don’t have to choose one over the other - you CAN have your cake and eat it too! House of Prada A Family Affair by Richard Carroll

“Profound Prada - A Family Affair” by Richard Carroll In 1913, after much planning, Mario Prada and brother Martino, proudly opened their luxury leather-goods shop in Milan’s stunning Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and posted a sign reading Fratelli Prada, (Prada Brothers), where they sold handbags, luxury leather

merchandise, and imported English steamer trunks, the genteel travel gear of the day. The building, awash with sensory overload, was also home to the Biffi Bakery and Café, first opened in 1852 by Paolo Biffi, pastry chef to the monarch, and a place Prada may have enjoyed a Milanese aperitif. Incredibly, Prada’s shop and Biffi’s remain in place today in the dazzling Galleria which has been tabbed among the world’s first shopping malls along with Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar. The dramatic Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II situated in

the heart of Milan near the Duomo, the second largest cathedral in the world, is a lofty four-story glass and cast-iron architectural showcase founded in 1877 in honor of Italy’s last King and carefully designed with sparkling Murano chandeliers, marble flooring, elaborate stonework, paintings and sculptures. The Galleria was the ultimate setting for the hard-working and talented Mario Prada, and although he never knew it, he was the origin and inspiration for a distinguished world-wide fashion powerhouse to be. Thus, Milan and the Galleria quietly gave

birth to another house of fashion, allowing it to develop from baby steps, and grow up in a city that would become one of the great fashion and design centers. In 1919, Prada was designated the Authorized Supplier to the Italian Royal Household, a huge career benefit, but throughout the years with two wars thrown into the mix, and robust competition from other fashion houses aggressively marketing upgraded leather goods, business was strained. Mario, after a long career, died in 1958, leaving his wife Luisa Prada Bianchi to take over the family business.

We’re so lucky to be living in the modern age of fashion with countless wardrobe choices -- that even extends to weddings! Today’s bride has the luxury of expressing herself through fashion in ways unheard of in past years. She can wear her choice of color, gown silhouette, jumpsuit, or even shorts to express her sense of fashion and personality should she desire! Through the centuries, brides traditionally wore their best black dress. However, Queen Victoria of England became queen at the young age of 18 and was used to making tough decisions regarding the many important matters of state by the time she was ready for marriage. When she said yes to Prince Albert, she wasn’t afraid to push the fashion envelope by choosing an ivory bridal gown. From then on, dressmakers everywhere were asked to make white/ivory bridal gowns. The tradition lives on. As fashion advanced through the years, we went from the heavily corseted, high neck, long sleeve gowns of the Victorian era through the 20’s when the silhouettes relaxed. After the austere war years when brides wore the best outfit they had, or even a “parachute dress” in which case, the gown was made from the silk from a parachute used during the war, gowns in the 50’s were beautiful silk and lace designs with the sweetheart neckline first appearing. Once we got through the 80’s with the “more is more” long puffy sleeves and large ball gown skirts, brides started choosing strapless or spaghetti strap gowns for the first time in history. Although the white gown tradition still prevails, the twenty-first century allows brides more freedom to express their personal style than ever before. Thus, fashions evolve.

Marie Margot

At Marie Margot, we’ve had the pleasure of working with many brides who preferred non-traditional gowns. With more couples choosing secular locations for the ceremony, the venue can inform the bride’s style. For example, a custom lace blouse for a flowy, chartreuse georgette skirt in a mountain meadow ceremony, an Old Hollywood style silk charmeuse gown with bright red flowers on a black background for a destination wedding in Mexico where the bride and groom treated the attendees to a salsa dance, a black tulle and Spanish lace gown in the tradition of pre-Victorian wedding style, a two piece silk charmeuse dress with a high-low skirt, and a gold ball gown for the “Beauty and the Beast” Reception theme. A current project is a gold silk crepe jumpsuit with a full, lace embellished overskirt.

I’ve even installed colorful

LED lights in the skirt of a ball gown. In each case, the gown perfectly expressed the bride’s personality. What is your dream dress? Let us help you make it a reality! Contact us at info@mariemargot.com 303-748-3562

Will You Sit With Me? (Holding Space May Be What We Need Most) by Kirk M Samuels

I have witnessed all three of my daughters’ births. My youngest was born in the evening. My then wife was advised to walk the halls of the Labor & Delivery Unit to help labor along. The lights were dimmed and there was an air of calmness. Each time contraction began, she grabbed the railing, doubled over in pain, and let out a groan that seemed to echo throughout the building. In my moment of discomfort, I politely asked her to maybe keep the sound down as others were probably sleeping. (Men…don’t ever do that.) She proceeded to (not so politely) remind me that everyone understood and warned me to never tell her to “shhhh” again. As labor progressed, I felt increasingly helpless. I needed to provide enough encouragement to be on her team without pretending to relate to her experience. She was the only one in the room giving birth and everyone else’s role was to support her. Other women were in labor that night and all mattered, however this one was crowning. Trial and error led me to the conclusion that the best thing I could do was sit there, hold her hand, and hold space for her. Systemic racism and the resulting injustice in America from its very founding has deep divides. It feels as if Lady Liberty herself is in labor and it is time to push. Every rally I attended in June had mostly white people chanting “black lives matter,” more as a statement than an organization. In this delivery room, I see my black people writhing in pain. This past Memorial Day, we watched a public lynching streamed around the world and black folks realized that maybe Uncle Sam wants white America…but wants to kill black America. In reflection of the recent events and our cultural upheaval, I realized that I have several touchpoints with a new type of personal struggle. I am a black man born the same year as George Floyd. I have a brother who lives in Georgia like Ahmaud Arbery & specifically in Atlanta like Rayshard Brooks. My daughters are black women in their 20s like Breonna Taylor. My tall, skinny, black son is now the same age as Trayvon Martin when he was killed. I have a daughter who is bi-racial like Colin Kaepernick and Barack Obama. I have been on the “other side” as well as a law enforcement officer. I have a request for those who wonder what they can do for black Americans who are in pain. Do not attempt to silence or rationalize our pain. Instead, hold our hand and hold space for us in our pain. If you feel too uncomfortable standing for us, how about sitting with us.

Cabin Fever By Trisha Ventker

Cabin Fever by Trisha Ventker

My family was delirious with Cabin Fever: it was time to rejuvenate our spirits after five months of lockdowns and canceled events, reading and watching the rampaging virus unfurl, and doing our best through it all to maintain a safe family environment. Our plan was to drive just a short way from Denver for a much-needed five-day escape. Thankfully, we’re encircled by the glorious splendor of Colorado nature accessible via loads of short excursions from the city where, at least for the moment, one can flee from the madness of the health scare, cabin fever, and a chaotic topsy-turvy world.

any real desire to go camping, but recently I have discovered glamping. As we settled into the two-bedroom Cindy Bear Cabin, the sky was a dappled blue allowing enough space on the horizon for the Rocky Mountains to cast their spell.

On a Sunday morning I piled into our SUV with my husband Tom, our 13-year-old son Tristan, his friend Gavin, 15, and Teddy, our eight-month-old Yorkshire Terrier who is way too smart for his age. A quick 38-mile drive from Denver, with soothing music playing along the way, brought us to Jellystone, a Sun RV Resort in Larkspur.

Surprisingly, we found the Jellystone cabins to be new, the fresh bouquet of pine heavenly. Cindy Bear was smartly designed with a small family room and sofa, sleeping loft with two twin mattresses, and a fully equipped kitchen including utensils, plates, cups, glasses, pots and pans, a microwave and coffeemaker, and a small two burner stove longing for some action. The resort is pet friendly, though Teddy, who is in his own world, has not yet realized he’s a pet.

With the pandemic running amok I had been searching for a family getaway with cabins. Not neglected cabins with outhouses, full of spiders and other crawly things, but clean, comfortable cabins with at least a touch of sumptuousness. Cabins seemed to be the safest alternative for us because they have their own HVAC systems and no shared hallways. At Jellystone, the seclusion of our cabin was both impressive and reassuring. Being a city chick through-andthrough, with my lifestyle roots in Manhattan and New York exerting enormous influence, I’ve never owned an RV nor had

Our spirits were lifted by views of the imposing mountains where flickering clouds danced in the wind, casting lingering shadows amongst the craggy peaks. I’ve always believed mountains are overflowing with magic, a mystical magic that is peaceful and serene, yet with a challenging edge; they make space for free spirits to roam.

A realm of peace and natural pleasures was at hand. I lounged on the deck near a grill and fire pit while Tristan and Gavin, despite the simmering hot day, enjoyed a massive trampoline, mercifully without breaking a bone. Teddy, always on the move, checked out the spotless Dog Park with a positive wag, but preferred to ride with us in a golf cart to explore the 100acre resort. The boys had a blast playing mini golf, while we all observed social distancing with masks.

Overall, I found Jellystone nicely maintained with attention to hygienic cleaning. The guests seemed to be mostly families and older couples, some with large expensive RV’s and their own golf carts making it easy for them to test their skills at the 18-hole Bear Dance Golf Course, listed among Colorado’s top courses. It’s a luxury family resort for sure, though WiFi was not available. Still, perhaps that was all for the best. With cabin fever greatly diminished, on Tuesday we enjoyed a scenic drive to River Run, another Sun Resort in Granby where we passed the time gazing at the beautiful mountain vistas aware once again of their magic. Granby, dating to 1905, 85 miles northwest of Denver and high in the sky at 7,935 feet, is only a short 20-minute drive from Rocky Mountain National Park and its astounding 300 miles of hiking trails. Bear Claw, a pleasant twobedroom cabin, was spotless and nicely disinfected with a welcoming gift basket of tee shirts, hats, water bottles, tasty snacks, and a toy for Teddy. He gave it a sniff but was more interested in the snacks. We had two golf carts at our disposal, one of which I tagged the “limo” because it could seat four or more, and it was Teddy’s favorite. The boys enjoyed a vigorous kayak adventure, and we all took pleasure in a delightful late lunch on the Headwaters Tavern patio, al fresco. On Wednesday, Tom and the boys rented a pontoon and for three hours explored Lake Granby, a massive lake with 40 miles of shoreline. After

the pontoon adventure, the boys were famished so, as the sun was setting, we drove to the Sage Brush BBQ in Grand Lake for tasty fall-off-the-bone ribs. We discovered that Grand Lake is the largest and deepest natural lake in the State and is the headwaters of the Colorado River. River Run has a plethora of lodging opportunities: tent and RV sites, historic-style Covered Wagons, slick Air Streams, a selection of cabins and villas, glamping, and more. Our next visit to River Run will be longer than two days, and I hope masks will no longer be needed.

When we arrived at the familyowned Devil’s Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa the following morning, we were pulled back to the roots of Colorado when the territory was part of the Wild West. Surrounded by 6,500 acres of Rocky Mountain Wilderness, Devil’s Thumb, 75 miles west of Denver, has been developed with some inspired touches and channels the essence of the pioneer spirit. Tucked away in the community of Tabernash, named after a Ute Indian Chief, Devil’s Thumb appeared to me to be a set taken straight out of a western movie with log cabins, a warm and inviting lodge, horses grazing in the grass and the inviting cascading hills. It was easy to see why the resort has been honored with a basketful of awards. Arriving before check-in time, we had lunch outdoors enjoying the everlasting views with our delicious Wagyu burgers that well deserve their famed reputation. An upscale resort, Devil’s Thumb ensured that guests and staff were practicing social distancing and staff offered splendid service as well. Waiting for us was a two-bedroom spacious log cabin that was as authentic as could be. Tristan and Gavin were ecstatic with zip-lining, and back on earth Gavin was instructed on the art of archery. Tom, looking relaxed and rested, rode an easy-going saddle horse named Scout through a forest of trees in the foothills of the Rockies with a guide named Amber, who knows the territory, while I relaxed on a lounge at the pool and chilled out with Teddy and a good book, one

of many I brought along on our cabin-fever escape. The Chef was shining at Heck’s making it a splendid choice for dinner. Future plans are to return to Devil’s Thumb Ranch where creative comfort comes full circle. It’s a priority on my Colorado “wish list.” Teddy’s, too. Avant-Garde Make Up Trends for Fall 2020 By Michael Moore

Avant-Garde Make Up Trends for Fall 2020 by Michael Moore

Three things to look for… water colored eyes, neon cheeks and lips, and glitter. We have seen on the runways for the Fall Avant-garde in a wonderfully new way. So how do we make them work for you? Sometimes, the bright pops of colors don’t work correctly on the average woman walking the streets of Denver. How do you make it wearable? Use a fluffy brush and add just a hint of color to the eye, while defining the rest with a great coat of mascara. To make a bolder statement, try applying it with a wet brush to build the intensity. This is perfect for an evening out on the town. Neon cheeks and lip colors are simple and beautifully wearable when using them in a sheer tint of color. The younger woman and professional can easily get away with wearing a bold neon lip alone. How do you make this work? Try a sheer gel-based blush; apply to the face with a lightweight foundation or no foundation at all. Apply directly to the skin and blend with your finger. Apply the excess to the lips, for a sheer hint of neon. Feeling bold? Come in and we can custom blend you a color of your choice. Lipstick, gloss or a gel tint; exclusively yours at Moore For Life!

Michael Moore has worked in the cosmetics industry since 1988 with brand leaders such as Bobbi Brown Essentials, Chanel, and Estée Lauder. In New York City, he was often seen backstage during fashion week, supporting major designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Bob Mackie, and Vera Wang. Michael’s client list includes Oscar winners, First Ladies of the United States, and royalty.

Eventually, the quality of the Colorado lifestyle—the healthy, natural atmosphere that inspires his technique—drew him out west, where he opened Moore For Life in Denver’s own center of chic, Cherry Creek North. mooreforlife.com

GLITTER FUN FACT: cosmetic glitter should be made from nylon, making it biodegradable. I like to teach women to use glitter as a fun accent piece. Using it as a liner on the eyes is an easy thing to do by using an Eyeliner Fixative, like Stuck on You by Moore for Life. Glitter Glue by Elf or even eyelash adhesive will work great, too. Not feeling that bold? Well try a highlighter that gives the face a luminous look and a shimmer glow. For dry skin, use a lotion to highlight the cheek bone area and the nose. Make it skin-tone correct for best results. For lighter complexions, use pink or silver tones. While golden skin tones should use a golden based color and darker skin tones, try a rose gold tone. Oilier skin can use a powder version of all of these and is much easier for a true win! Â So, the real moral of the story is if you feel bold, go bold! If you do not feel so bold, use translucent versions to obtain the truly desired look.
