All I Want for Christmas is … Trisha Ventker

Several years ago I broke a tooth eating a piece of chocolate. Unfortunately for me it was a tooth next to my front teeth! I immediately called my dentist, Dr. Lewis to make an emergency appointment since the office was closed due to it being after hours. At the time Dr. Lewis was practing at Vista Ridge Dental. Without hesitation he told me to meet him at the office in 20 minutes After trying to save the tooth Dr. Lewis concluded that the tooth was dead and fractured all the way down to the root. Perhaps this was the reason for my past and current auto-immune issues? It needed to be pulled. I started to cry. Dr. Lewis reassured me that at some point in the future I could possibly be a candidate for an implant. This exact event would change my thoughts on the importance of finding the right experts in dental care. After extensive discussions on what my dental journey would be, Dr. Lewis and I decided it would be best to straighten my teeth and bite before embarking upon the implant route.

DR. RYAN LEWIS

DMD, MSD

I contacted both Dr. Mark Barnes who was a TMJ specialist at the time at TMJ Sleep Solutions and Dr. Raj Patil who is an orthodontist in Erie. All three of these dental professionals formed a team to create a Care Plan for me. After a few years in braces and several months of TMJ therapy, I tried the implant route. Unfortunately my body rejected all 3 procedures. My Care Plan changed. Now I was to have a bridge made, which at first scared me. I thought bridges were only for old people. Ryan assured me bridges today are way more advanced and complimentary than in the past. He also suggested a few veneers to go over my front teeth so we could improve my smile. My smile was okay but not dynamic. I had ground down my teeth from constant clenching. They looked short and not very youthful. Showing me on his screen what I would look like with longer and whiter teeth …

YOUR SMILE FRAMES YOUR WHOLE FACE

This exact event would change my thoughts on the importance of finding the right experts in dental care.

the change would make a huge difference in not only my face but in my confidence as well. After many OCD visits to Dr. Ryan Lewis and his specialists (assistants and cermic pro) I can now say my smile makes me look much younger than my 54 years. I have more confidence than ever before and the missing tooth is not evident at all. I highly recommend you visit Dr. Lewis and his team of specialists at Rocky Mountain Dental Specialists for one of the most professional and comprehensive dental care that you’ll find in Colorado. All I wanted for Christmas is my two front teeth.

FIVE TIPS HOW NOT TO SELL YOUR HOME DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON Brandy Unruh

I don’t know about you but I just love to celebrate all things when given the chance. National Margarita day, get me the limes; National Hamburger day; sign me up and don’t forget the avocado and ketchup; Halloween oh my, that is my favorite and everything at my house is dead and spooky. So when it comes to the season of perpetual hope; no matter what you celebrate; there are countless decorations that come with it. So how do you cross décor when selling your home? Well if you want to be boring you would do the tried and true standard that works for every season: tasteful, minimalistic and bright. BUT THAT IS SO BORING and being boring is so not fun at all, (right)? So here are my favorite decorating tips and tricks to really stand out, and maybe out-last every other home on the market (the more days on market the better in this case). I have plenty of amazing tips on how to actually stage, sell and make your home shine during any season. Simple, classic, and using your favorite local home expert is truly the key to your success.

ELIFE m agazine

How Not To

Sell Your Home During the Holiday Season

1.

Way OVER PRICE your home. There are plenty of homes and buyers will probably like them better anyway.

2.

Celebrate all the holidays; at the same time. At my house Halloween leads into a mishmash of pumpkins, evergreen trees and teal bulbs. I really believe in having a little bit of all things “seasonal” simultaneously and why do all the work if you can only enjoy it for like 2 weeks. So what do we have….a really thankful, blue Christmas, bright light, I have a few leaves and pumpkins, and anything else that I have been given to celebrate the amazing holidays that fall between November and January 1st when we decide this is definitely over. Bottomline, celebrate it all…at the same time! Tis’ the season to be fun, bright, silly and inclusive. Make it inclusive in all the ways that make you happy. I also think this is a great idea for home sales. I mean if it makes you happy then it definitely will make a buyer happy right? We all love the same things don’t we?

3.

Definitely go overboard on your porch. That is the first thing buyers and guests see, so I really recommend filling it with everything that screams holiday fun. Signs, wreaths, mittens, evergreen trees, ice skates, toboggans, lights, Menorahs and candles, all the things at once. Do as much as you can of everything, if a little is a good thing then a LOT is better right? Plus, buyers won’t be able to see the spider webs left over from fall or the dirt on the walls that we forgot to clear off. It will for sure be the way to make it so that the buyer has so many things to look at that they forget why they are there. While we are on that topic, definitely don’t clear any leaves or mess either. Its winter, no one will notice.

4.

If you don’t have enough décor to cover every single hard surface, go get more! Ask your friends to borrow theirs, order on Amazon, heck pull from other holidays (see above). We want to make sure that there is enough clutter to cover every wall, every corner and every hard surface to ensure that buyers can see how much you can fit inside your home! Clutter clutter clutter away!

5.

Under no circumstances should you even think about listening to your favorite real estate agent! They don’t know what they are talking about anyway. THE “REAL” THE REAL FIRST THANK

THANKSG DAY STOR

JOHN SMALL

A History Article By | John Small

How many people do you know, that when asked, “What’s your favorite national or universally accepted yearly religious holiday” would say Thanksgiving Day? Many - right - for as time transpires and more people grow more sensitive to each other’s diverse traditions, mores and faiths, the “Great Neutral Holiday” that all Americans can safely agree on has become Thanksgiving Day! Sorry for you Groundhog Day, Arbor Day, Flag Day and April Fools Day lovers - Thanksgiving has grown into the universally safe and relatively innocuous, celebratory 24-hour period that few can find fault with from either a cultural, discriminatory or a racial perspective. Or has it? How many friends and family members do you have that eagerly look forward to the traditional “kickoff” of the year-end holiday season which literally ends on the last evening of the current and first day of the following year? Too many for some, I imagine, and for the more “solitary lonely guys and gals” - not enough, I guess;

ELIFE m agazine

LKSGIVING GIVING RY however, Thanksgiving is the proverbial “exhale” for the tough eleven months that existed before and an appreciative pause to end the calendar year prior to the ensuing religious celebrations like Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza before New Year’s Eve and Day welcoming the next year. But what about the real story of Thanksgiving that too many people aren’t aware of when they feast on too much turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and vegetables while watching the perennial three NFL games strategically placed from noon to nine o’clock each fourth Thursday of each month of November? Don’t you think they need to be educated different from the way they were taught in the classrooms of their respective elementary schools in years past? You’d be surprised! Sure, there was certainly a documented “sit down”, if you will, between the Wampanoag Tribe of what would become The Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ town of Plymouth and the settlers from the famous Mayflower. That meeting was

What’s Your Favorite Holiday? less for celebratory food sharing and more for fasting, a tradition that lasted three days for the settlers and Native Americans alike. After the painstaking “triduum” which both sides endured praying to their individual “makers” - some feel they broke the fast with a thanksgiving of sorts beginning on the fourth day. Perhaps a slow-running turkey (or two) found its way, roasted and ready upon the English settlers’ pewter plates for the initial day of cohabitational celebration, but experts believe that multiple fish and seafood in general furnished the first of such meals. The English called it “Rejoicing Day”, not Thanksgiving Day, as few truly know what the Wampanoag Tribe called it, if indeed they called it anything at all! (A national day of mourning do most native Americans refer to it as for all of their tribesmen who lost their lives due to European expansion or Colonial Imperialism). Maybe they originally called it “Survival Day” after the settlers, who brought with them some multiple virulent viruses and Text Author: John Small | Photos by: Brooke Lark on Unsplash

myriad bacterial infections that eventually took the lives of hundreds of natives finally found a way to eventually cohabit with the new arrivals, inflicted, innate diseases notwithstanding. For nearly four years did the European settlers before the Mayflower arrived come with both “good intentions” and “bad infections”. Other experts feel that some of the earliest settlers or “exploratory businessmen” came to the New World to capture and abscond with Native Americans for the slave trade. But after all - let’s not go there! It’s Thanksgiving man! Let’s just obscenely stuff ourselves and watch football with our friends and family, beginning the Christmas seasonal rush of obligatory giftgiving and stressful preparation waiting for us less than a couple weeks in the future, shall we? Nah; let’s continue to uncover the truths behind the veil of fiction like the very little man or sentry is revealed who let Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Lion and Scarecrow into the Ozland’s Palace before long. Perhaps those little nuggets of factuality gave way to a meeting between the infectious and the infected as more of a truce and territorial boundary declaration or mutual defense compact than what we like to think happened, namely a nice, friendly, fuzzy and warm homogenization of Euro and Native inhabitants of what the settlers would later term “New England” on the “old hunting grounds” of the poor

That meeting was less for celebratory food sharing and more for fasting, a tradition that lasted three days for the settlers and Native Americans alike.

Wampanoag Tribe. Either way, for better or worse, “a” day did take place where two distinct and dissimilar sides did assemble, sharing more “nasaump” or a porridge-like dish made from cornmeal that the larger Pequot Indian Tribe’s Wampanoags shared with the settlers along with some mature bluefish rather than the patented and alltoo-familiar turkey and stuffing, with all the trimmings with which we associate the holiday. As for the term “Thanksgiving Day”, it unfortunately surfaced after 700 Pequot people were massacred in 1637 when Massachusetts Governor John Winthrop declared it a day of celebration, or as we can today look back at as a day of infamy which attached itself to the national holiday that Abraham Lincoln, in 1863 documented and declared it a national holiday. So, after all, let’s still assemble on that last Thursday of November for the “right reasons” - to give thanks to God for all we

have as a family and as collected Americans, but between the forkfuls of potatoes, squash, cranberry sauce and stuffed turkey, let’s also pray for the first inhabitants of our nation who “accepted” us either willingly or reticently at those wooden tables in the forests of Massachusetts back in the fateful year of 1621. “Drumstick’s mine - I called it! I was the first here!” (Unlike the Mayflower passengers with or without their good intentions!). Happy Thanksgiving all! John J. Small

DON’T Forget the Hands

E LIF E m ag azine

The hands are one of the body parts that show ones true age as they are exposed to the elements.

DON’T FORGET THE HANDS TIAJA PIERRE When we are born, we have the prefect skin. As we age hormones change and we experience different things that affect our skin. For example one might think that they are helping by ensuring they have enough sunlight exposure to ensure they have enough Vitamin D. Unfortunately it is a double-edge sword as too much sun exposure without sunblock can lead to sun damage. Even though skin is the largest organ of the body, each area of skin is different. Some skin is thinner than others. Many times people think to only put sunblock on the face and body and forget the hands. The hands are one of the body parts that show ones true age as they are exposed to the elements. There are not currently many modalities to reverse the aging process of the hands. Knowing this, it is vital to not only use sunblock for the hands during the day but to moisturize them as well. There are several types of sunblocks and moisturizers that work differently depending on what one is looking to achieve. Here are several suggestions for various issues when it comes to ones hands; ELIFE m agazine

Photos by: Nati Melnychuk on Unsplash

Sunblock:

Supergoop Hand Screen This product is not only rated as a SPF 40 but is specifically for ones hands. The product if quickly absorbed and does not leave a film.

Age Spots:

Strivectin Volumizing Hand Treatment This cream is formulated with a brightening complex that helps to minimize age spots while hyaluronic acid and volumizing spheres work together to nourish the skin and prevent the loss of elasticity.

Crepey Skin:

Medix 5.5Retinaol + Ferulic Acid This richly formulated cream works to shrink the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots while improving skin tone and elasticity.

Anti-aging:

Goldfaden MD, Hands to Heart This cream has the ability to even out skin, diminish age spots and the appearance of wrinkles using Retinol.

Of course there are other issues that people experience with damage to their hands, but if one starts when they are younger and makes good habits, damage to the fragile skin of the hands can be minimized.

MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLTIONS FOR PARENTING TEENS By Cheryl Maguire I’m not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions, but I thought I would embrace change this year. As I reflect back on last year my first thought is, “I survived being a mom to twin teens!” Their fourteenth birthday is in February so this time of year also marks my accomplishment, and yes I view that as an accomplishment. If I’m honest with myself, I can also admit there is definitely room for some improvement. Since I know that I can only control my behavior, I plan to focus on what I can do differently as a parent. So here’s my list in no particular order (even though I numbered it—I just like numbered lists).

1.

I will encourage my twin teens to be more independent. During their morning routine, I will remain silent without saying, “Hurry up or you will miss the bus!” I will also give them a list of things they are responsible for such as putting away their ELIFE m agazine

laundry, cleaning the dishes and packing their lunches.

2. I will allow them to fail. This is a tough

one for me since I often feel this may somehow be a reflection on me being a bad parent. I also struggle with being a perfectionist. But I realize sometimes “failing” is the only way you learn and grow as a person. So when they ask me to bring to school their forgotten homework or other items my answer will be a hard “no.”

3.

I will continue to attempt to communicate with them. This year, whenever I tried to ask my teens questions, I heard a lot of one word generic responses. When I ask, “How was school today?” often their response is a one word “good” without any other details. After hearing “good” or “nothing” a hundred times, I was tempted to give up trying. But I have been told, by more than one person, I’m tenacious so I tried other methods. I found by asking unusual questions or instead

of asking questions I offered information about myself that sometimes I was able to engage in what some may consider a conversation. So I’m going to keep trying because when it works, it’s worth the effort.

4. I’m going to nag less and observe more. I

never enjoy nagging, and it rarely yields the results I’m want. After reading articles and interviewing experts, I learned that making observational comments or questions is much more effective. My favorite one which even sometimes elicits a chuckle is, “Are you working hard or hardly working?”

5.

I’m going to let them know when they are doing a good job. It’s easy to notice all the things a teen is doing wrong such as leaving their towel on the floor, staying up too late at night, or eating junk food. It’s harder to point out what they are doing right such as how they did their homework, helped their sibling, or cleaned their room. I plan to notice at least once a day what they are doing right and let them know how proud I am of them. Because they are doing a lot of things right and I am really proud of them. One of the reasons I don’t like New Year’s Resolutions is because often by March people are back to their old ways, their resolutions quickly forgotten. That is why I’m writing it down, so I can reflect on this list and remind myself these goals will help us have a better relationship and hopefully help my teens grow up to be successful adults.

Mental health is the way we process information about different experiences while emotional health is the way we express emotions that accompany the experiences and our ability to manage the experiences. Both are intertwined and helpful to care for. Have you noticed changes in your mental and emotional health? This is your gentle reminder that you are not alone and that you matter. As a licensed mental health provider and certified EMDR therapist in Erie, Colorado -- I want to offer tips to help you. Self-Checkup: Are basic needs such as sleep, food, shelter, clothing, safety being met? If they are unmet, you may experience feeling uneasy in other parts of your life. Community resources are available to help in these areas. Also checkup with your thoughts and emotions to see if they have changed slightly or significantly. Practice Being Present: Be in the here and now. It can be hard not to think about the past and to not travel into the future. What are things to help remind you of today? Start with recognizing your thoughts and feelings. Notice how they are impacting you by reflecting on if they are helping or harming you. Set Boundaries: Assess the different parts of your life (work, personal, school, relationships, etc.). A boundary is a way of setting limits. Start by determining a realistic, comfortable and healthy point where setting a boundary will honor your needs and wants. Perhaps saying “no” or not taking on more than your capacity will allow. Self-Care: Explore ideas that restore and replenish you. There is no need for costly activities nor ones that take a lot of effort. They do need intention. Embrace the opportunity to care for yourself. If you are depleted, there will not be much more to give to other people, places nor things. Reach Out: To a qualified mental health therapist. Therapist directories can help you by zip code along with area of focus: • • •

PETS AS GIFTS JAIME BESSKO

The holiday season is upon us and its that time of year when many people will be giving animals as gifts. Receiving a pet as a gift can either be a dream come true or an eventual nightmare. There are common scenarios that contribute to the success or failure of giving pets as gifts for the holidays. A few tips to consider:

Make sure that everyone is in agreement about who will be responsible to take care of the animal. Most of the responsibilities will fall on the adults in the home. Just because you want to surprise your kids with a pet, does not mean they are ready for the responsibility to care for the animal. If the children cannot fulfill their daily animal care responsibilities, the adults need to step in and take over. If the adults are on board with that plan, then go ahead and get the pet for their kids. Don’t expect children to follow through on their commitments or make the animal a priority in their life. As long as the child is still a minor, the adults need to be actively involved in the animal’s welfare. Only surprise your significant other with a pet if you are both in agreement and have discussed getting a specific animal together in the near future. Some people want to be involved in selecting their next pet, so surprising a loved one can sometimes backfire. Take a realistic account of how much time you have to commit to your new pet. Some animals are much more maintenance than others. Choose a pet that fits with your lifestyle, schedule and most importantly, your ENERGY LEVEL. If you’re adding a canine friend, be sure to select a dog that has LESS ENERGY than you. In my experience it is the largest contributing factor towards either a fulfilling or frustrating relationship. There are many animals in local shelters and rescues that are perfectly healthy, ideal companions and are waiting for the right home. Some of my fondest memories include getting new pets and sharing wonderful moments with them. I hope these tips help you in creating beautiful holiday memories and long-lasting loving relationships!
