As patients, we must come together, support each other and Stand Up for Cannabis. While we await the opening of dispensaries here in Clark County, we are quickly being stripped of our rights. On July 1st we lost the ability to legally make our own concentrates which many of us depend

on. Now, ILAC (the MMJ lab committee) is proposing limiting patient edibles to 100mg even when patients need higher dose products and limiting the amount of concentrates a patient can purchase once dispensaries are open. The system is faulty and the patients are paying the price. On July 31st, James Parsons, a Las Vegas resident, an honorably discharged United States Marine Corps veteran, and medical marijuana patient registry card holder filed suit against the State of Nevada seeking to invalidate two state medical marijuana laws that the State now imposes on medical marijuana patients. Parsonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; lawsuit alleges three violations: (1) Second Amendment violation because state law infringes on his right to keep and bear arms, and (2) Fifth Amendment violation because the act of having to register incriminates him in violation of his right to not incriminate himself, and (3) Right to Privacy violation because the state discloses his private medical information to third parties, including the DMV and FBI, which violates his constitutional right

to privacy and also federal HIPAA laws through unauthorized and unwarranted disclosure of his private medical information. This lawsuit is a step in the right direction to protect our rights as patients. This lawsuit needs judicial review and In order for this to happen, a legal team needs to be assembled. Medical Cannabis & Cancer: The Blame Game By Sharon Letts

In general the medical industry today tells the average American they are at fault for their own health woes, as if all the poisons polluting the world had nothing to do with any of it. The rhetoric seems to be, if you have Lobular Carcinoma it’s because you took hormone replacement; you have Ductal Carcinoma because you drank more than three glasses of alcohol a day, you had children after 30 or you didn’t have them at all; lung cancer is due to your use of cigarettes, or you stood too close to someone who was smoking them; skin cancer is for lack of sunscreen; heart disease, you ate too many fatty foods. The limited lists of illusive causes for serious illness and disorders, combined with the redirecting of blame for our modern-day ailments is enough to make anyone sick. As a cannabis patient, I am frustrated at the lack of information and research on cannabis and cancer in this country, let alone a vague window of information on why or how I became unwell.

The summer of 2012, a routine mammogram found a spider-web-like mass in my breast. A quick look at the Mayo Clinic’s site found an exact replica of the mass, with just one possible cause listed, “hormone replacement.” The mammogram was done as a preventive measure, as I had been on the hormone replacement for just two weeks and immediately stopped taking them. That said, my sister had been diagnosed with the same cancer two years prior, going through surgery, chemo, and radiation – and she had never taken a single hormone replacement.

if I were to blame these two substances solely for my autoimmune disorders, or my processing problems under the autistic spectrum, the world today contains more than seven million recognized chemicals, with more than 80,000 of them in common use.

What we do know is our mother was raised on a farm in Illinois, and she told us stories of dancing under the rain of DDT as crop dusters flew above. It was a game. The pesticide companies told them it was good for them. Everyone in her family died of cancers. In 1962 Rachel Carson’s tell-all, “Silent Spring,” was the catalyst for environmental change, prompting the Clean Air and Water Acts of 1973 and 1974, respectively. Carson warned of cell damage leading to cancers and predicted our onslaught of neurological, autoimmune, and central nervous system disorders in our future. In 2014 the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,” otherwise known as the “DSM,” listing all the ailments dealt with thus far in the field of psychiatry, came out with a new list replacing the word “illness” with “disorder.” This new classification further demonstrates we are a species made outof-order, but just why or how we became like this is never stated. One theory is we are doomed by our own hand, or, more specifically, by toxins created by us – heavy metals leached from cookware; synthetic medications made from petroleum byproducts, cleaning solvents, and other industrial compounds; such as lead or aluminum used in our everyday lives that have poisonous properties. I’m second generation DDT, but I also came up in the age of lead paint, and even

So there I was, looking at the mass, when I remembered an earlier conversation with Dr. William Courtney the year prior on juicing. The California physician had helped his wife do away with more than 20 prescription meds previously needed to treat Lupus. I also remembered hearing of the strong oil, otherwise known as RSO or Rick Simpson Oil and began networking with medicine makers for a batch. In the five weeks that passed prior to the biopsy I had eaten raw leaves in salads, and made a drink in the blender. I had already begun ingesting a light oil for sleep from a company in the Bay area called “Internal,” but I was not diligent in my ingesting as it was new to me, and I was not hopeful the minimal ingesting would do anything. As I lay there with the technician gliding the magic wand over my breast, he said, “I can’t seem to find it.” After looking at past and current views, the surgeon said, “We might not do this today.” To which I informed, “I’ve been ingesting raw Cannabis - that may be the reason,” to which he asks if he can do that therapy too.

Typical Stoner vs. Enlightened Patient

Why is it that stoner jokes always seem to come into play whether medicine is being discussed or not? As if getting high is the

Medical end-all, as I lay there with my boob exposed and jelled, facing the big “C.” But this is my moment to enlighten, and I advise, no, ingesting of raw cannabis will not get you high, and teased that it may not be the treatment for him, to which he was comically disappointed. He then informed me that he was part of a cannabis experiment in medical school during the 1960s that found medicinal value to the plant, such as in treating nausea. As he tells it, they injected him with a cannabis serum (heated, no doubt), and he said he became so excited (intoxicated is more like it), he grabbed the ass of the attending nurse. This admission was met with howls of laughter from the attending staff, but I pressed on. “That must have been a strong batch,” I say, to more chuckles. I then advise him of the practice of eating raw leaves versus heating cannabis for psychoactive effects of THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol).

Personal Trials

Stumped at the lack of mass, the good doctor wanted to go ahead with the procedure, “… as long as we are all here,” he declared. I took this as my chance to do a little trial myself and asked if we could postpone the procedure another month while I continue with my own therapy. Thankfully, he agreed. During the next five weeks I ingested RSO, while still ingesting raw leaves. And the most amazing thing happened, all my symptoms from Thyroid Disease and additional hormonal issues from Menopause fell away. Complications with digestion, fatigue, and numerous other symptoms ceased to exist. Prior to taking the strong oil I had only smoked to medicate, and used the light oil, “Internal” for sleep. Eating the raw leaf combined with the oil turned my body around. And the cancer was disappearing. The Batch of Brownies That Launched a Bundle of Blessings By Mindi Griffiths

Forty-one-year-old Oregon medical marijuana patient, Kristie Groce, of Portland, is no stranger to adversity. Kristie has suffered immeasurably with numerous medical illnesses and injuries over the years. She had even been written off as terminal and placed on hospice care at one point. Despite the mortal diagnosis, Kristie is now thriving in ways she had never dared to dream of due, in her mind, to the healing properties of cannabis. Cannabis has not only given Kristie her life back, but now she has learned she is creating a new life, something she was told would never happen. Kristie’s miraculous recovery and pregnancy can only be understood by explaining some of the suffering she has gone through. Recently, Kristie was diagnosed with Antiphospholipid syndrome, a condition that went un-diagnosed for years. One symptom of this condition is that her body rejects pregnancies resulting in miscarriages. At this moment, Kristie

is in the 18th week of her pregnancy, and her doctors are baffled that it is going so well. She reports suffering from 33 miscarriages, all occurring around or before the ninth-week of gestation, and is convinced she knows why her health has improved deeming her the ability to carry a baby. “The only difference between then and now is cannabis oil.”

Kristie literally glows as she describes the many blessings she has had since cannabis was introduced into her life. Her introduction to medical cannabis was also no less than incredible. In 1999, Kristie’s health took a turn for the worse. She was in the hospital because of a thyroid storm, heart attack, and stroke. She then developed pneumonia, which resulted in coughing fits breaking her back in nine places. She nearly died and became wheelchair bound. Ten years later, Kristie was still suffering. She began to have allergic reactions to the morphine prescribed to her. She describes writhing in pain and having the sweats and shakes, rendering her completely miserable and unable to function. At this very low point in her life and health, on a fateful summer day in 2009, four elderly church ladies showed up at her home with a gift. These unsuspecting Ganja grannies baked cannabis-infused brownies with the hope of helping Kristie be more comfortable. The gift was much more than comfort. She described the brownies as barely edible. The kind hearted church ladies were not experienced cannabis connoisseurs. Able to only obtain some leaves, they chopped them up and added them to the brownies hoping for the best. later, she got up and found herself in the living room enjoying a television program. Realizing she had “spaced” out and was not suffering in pain or from withdrawals, Kristie looked around for her wheelchair in amazement. She had walked across her house for the first time in a decade with her own two legs! Kristie instantly became a believer in the magical properties of cannabis. One month later, she obtained her OMMP card and continued to use cannabis to treat her pain. It was not until 2013 however, following a stroke, that Kristie began consuming full-extract-cannabis-oil (F.E.C.O.) to treat all of her ailments. The oil treatments began to do more for her than she ever thought possible. Her asthma began to mend and her arthritis and fibromyalgia went into remission. Kristie’s diabetes improved and a benign tumor on her brain began to shrink. She is literally walking proof that cannabis heals. She no longer relies on the use of a wheelchair, no longer home-bound, and full of plans for her and her child’s future. She fully attributes the success of her pregnancy, her overall improvement in health and the reduction of the effects of Antiphospholipid syndrome on her baby to her use of cannabis oil. Many consider Oregon to be a leader in the cannabis legalization movement, but prohibition still rages on throughout this country. Even in light of the new state recreational laws, one may wonder how Kristie is able to consume cannabis during her pregnancy without fear of retribution. Many people are still going to prison, receiving eviction notices, losing their jobs and even their children, all because of this life-saving plant. Miraculously, Kristie’s medical providers not only signed her recommendation for cannabis knowing she is pregnant, but have gone as far as stating that it is medically necessary for her to continue cannabis extract oil. The positive attitude and support from the medical professionals who have been guiding Kristie is incredibly comforting to hear. Professional medical decisions may finally start to reflect the science, changing laws and public attitudes about medicinal cannabis use, allowing for countless lives to be saved and more miracles to be celebrated.

If you are using trim for your butter, it will always be green. There really isn’t a way around this. Weed trim contains Chlorophyll which is extracted during the heating process giving your butter that green hue. There is nothing wrong with green butter for the most part but it can make the baked goods look like….. things we shouldn’t have near our mouth. If you want to make a cleaner and more attractive butter try using a concentrate like hash, kief, or the newest way…..shatter. Experimenting is the key to being able to produce a good, strong, edible butter. As far as the baking part goes, I suggest taking a cooking class or having someone help you until you get it down. When all else fails just do what women have been doing since the first grocery store opened; buy it then brag to everyone how incredible your baking skills have improved.

I’m honored to be a part of your 5-minutes of fame. You better grab some extra mags for all those signings you may have coming up. As far as my picture goes, not everyone who is clever can be attractive. Let’s just say that some of us have a face for radio. As far as weed goes, I would have to see the strain that you are referring to in order to determine if we have this In Nevada. There are some pretty specific strains in Nevada but the same also holds true for Cali. There are strains all over that patients do not have access to. For example: the city of Detroit is legal and has walk-in dispensaries but they carry a majority of Canadian and northern state strains, which by the way are all amazing indoor strains. They will most likely never see California weed due to distance just as we don’t have access to their strains. There is also that petty law of moving product past state lines. Transporting marijuana state-to-state has been frowned upon by law enforcement for quite a while and I’m pretty sure that won’t change anytime soon. Unfortunately, saying something like “Soand-so has some great weed” is now as common as saying “Damn that was a good ass sandwich”. There are so many different strains and grow operations that it is hard to determine what good weed is now. As a connoisseur, I like to stick to nice indoor grows for my personal medicine where you may prefer outdoor, or greenhouse grows. So, you thinking a specific strain is incredible could mean a nightmare strain for me. There is also the personal choice of terpenes and attractive buds, some prefer Limonene terps while others search for Pinene scents. I like the fruity smelling strains where you may prefer a skunkier strain. To me, saying I found some good weed is way too generic of a statement to deserve a real response. I bet I just lost some cuteness points, didn’t I? Next time you get some dank buds, stop and ask yourself whether those buds came from Canada or Mexico. I bet you will never notice the difference. So for now, enjoy the fire you can get in Las Vegas and keep that imagination going….some of us girls rely on that!

he received a call for help with medical symptoms, from what Fisher would later discover was an imposter. Galen provided both medicine and information to help with the imposters’ medical condition on two separate occasions. He was unaware that he was being watched and felt he was complying with Nevada’s medical cannabis laws. In late August of 2014, Fisher was pulled over, arrested and charged with two counts of possession and sale of a schedule I/II controlled substance. Galen was then held in jail for over seven months as a result of a charge for a mere 20.5 grams, a misdemeanor amount of cannabis and denied bail as well as an electronic monitoring device, which he offered to pay for, and comply with upon his arrest.

PRISON OUTREACH

By the time you’re reading this, Independence Day will have passed. July 4th, the day of America’s freedom, but not so for many Americans who are imprisoned over a plant that is legal in 4 states along with our nation’s capital for recreational use, as well as 23 states and counting that have approved it for medical use. Marijuana is medicine, but in the time you finished this paragraph, a vet has committed suicide or is facing criminal charges for a plant, all which could have been avoided if the law was changed in their state. This month we would like to highlight Vietnam Veteran, Eddy Lepp, a man who did nothing but help in the community. Lepp believed in the power of cannabis, in its healing powers both physically and spiritually, but has been told he’s wrong for his faith. The prosecution of Eddy Lepp was not just over a person growing medicine or growing to supply a recreational dispensary, but that of religious persecution as well. The government denies the “marijuana is a religious sacrament” defense; however, when one accepts wine in Catholicism or peyote in Native American rituals, they are accepted as such. Sacrament is sacrament, and Eddy is not the only one that believes marijuana is ceremonial. The persecution and imprisonment of Eddy Lepp is a breach of personal religious freedoms and highlights the lack of common sense within our judicial system, no one should go to jail for a plant.

During a press conference held in Los Angeles on July 3, 2015 involving multiple attorneys, various lawsuits were announced and discussed. Attorney Matthew Pappas and retired L.A.P.D. Deputy Chief Steve Downing discussed video of Santa Ana officers engaged in inappropriate behavior during raids of medical marijuana collectives and provided an update on evidence of political corruption related to Santa Ana’s medical marijuana ordinance and lottery. Attorneys Anthony Curiale, James Kajtoch and Stefan Borst-Censullo discussed a multi-

million dollar state claim for damages filed on behalf of patients attacked during April and May raids of collectives in Santa Ana. The Swain Law Office announced the filing of a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Kansas Department for Children and Families along with the State of Kansas in regards to Shona Banda’s arrest and temporary loss of custody of her child. Joe Grumbine, President of The Human Solution International, a human rights organization based in Southern California, along with Rolland Gregg, one in five people charged by the federal government with violating federal law for growing marijuana for a family member with cancer, discussed the federal government’s refusal to comply with provisions of section 358 of the 2015 Federal Appropriations Act barring federal funds from being used to interfere with implementation of medical marijuana laws in 35 states. Attorney Matthew Pappas will discuss the filing of a federal lawsuit seeking to enjoin the Justice Department from spending further money in the criminal case against Gregg.

Galen was finally released from jail in March, after a down payment was made on $18,000, which is the required 18% of the total bail of $120,000. Galen will be going to court on these charges in November of 2015 and states, “My attorney, Bret Whipple had a number of trials so we had the trial date moved.”

Terisa Deming had a victory in court after her community service hours performed through The Human Solution International were challenged. As a result of her fighting to have the hours approved, the Las Vegas courts have now added THSI to their approved list of organizations that a resident can perform community service hours through. The fact that not only The Internal Revenue Service, but our local court systems as well, are now recognizing pro-cannabis organizations such as THSI as relevant, is a sure sign of the changing times. For this installment of “Tokin’ With The Infamous”, I was stoked to catch up with Nate Lund of Red Dragon Brotherz Grow Team at Chalice in San Bernadino. After a long day of dabs, and an epic night of being front row center for headliner, Busta Rhymes, we headed back to the RDB booth, rolled up a fat joint, and talked about his passion, not only for the Las Vegas medical cannabis community and cannabis education, but also how mainstream acceptance of cannabis could boost the economy in his hometown. I have nothing but respect for this dude. He truly cares about patients, and is refreshingly humble in an industry that so often produces major egos. I wish there were more people like Nate in this movement. Hopper: So while we’re sitting here puffin’ away on this joint, I just want to ask you a few questions. Nate: “Yeah, for sure…let’s do it.” Hopper: Right on, right on. So first of all, will you tell us what Red Dragon Brotherz is all about, and how did you get started? Nate: “It started originally with Red Dragon, the strain, and it snowballed from there. Nate: “Red Dragon started with me and my brother, but now it’s turned into a pretty big network of growers. We share information. We help each other out, we share equipment. We’re a big community. We make sure that the next person, if for any reason, hits a point in time where they can’t keep going, they don’t have to feel that way. One of us will take care of them. We all take care of each other.” Hopper: Yeah, yeah. SD to LV all day long. You’re getting mad love in Cali. Nate: “Oh hell yeah. SD to LV, LV to SD baby!” Hopper: Hell yeah, it was great seeing you brother. This joint is pretty much just a roach now. Kenneth Zalut, a 52 year old Nevada cannabis patient, has used cannabis to treat his testicular and lymphatic cancer, leukemia, multiple sclerosis and glaucoma. He has done so without any chemotherapy or pharmaceuticals. His successful endeavors have included karate instruction, chef, entrepreneur and a security engineer. There are so many great Nevada medical cannabis patient heroes who want the world to know how cannabis has benefited them. I am grateful to interview him for Vegas Cannabis Magazine.

KZ - I make my own hash when available, so I can cut down on the smoking cannabis. I also use cannabis or cannabis extracts in all my food when possible.

JS - How could a dispensary assist you? KZ - During my several years of experience with California dispensaries to access medicine, I cannot say I am hopeful that dispensaries will help anyone in my financial situation. Not many ill people can afford the dispensary prices. JS - What would you suggest to a medical cannabis patient that is just starting their journey into using cannabis as a natural medicine? KZ - I recommend new Nevada medical marijuana patients learn the state laws, learn to grow for themselves, or find a caregiver that can.

JS - Do you have a preference for a certain dosage? How do you regulate dosage? KZ - I have treated my illnesses with cannabis only, never allowing the doctors to give me chemotherapy and refusing their pills. I don’t drink alcohol and rarely take aspirin. My dosage amounts vary from two grams of cannabis to seven grams a day depending on my pain levels, and one

as possible when medicine is available as I am in constant pain. This allows me to have a quality of life that no doctors—who have given me six months to live at least five times—can hope to give me.

JS - What strains and methods of ingestion worked best for your cancer and multiple sclerosis? KZ - For my illness, I prefer mostly indica strains for muscle spasms and sleep, because sativa strains may sometimes give me the “shakes.” I find “purple” strains or “Afghani” derived strains work well. For immediate relief I smoke through a water pipe and use edibles for long-term relief. I medicate as much

JS - How can a Nevada cannabis patient advocate and push things forward? KZ - All advocates in Nevada need to educate the politicians who make the laws, such as the new hash law [SB 447]. This law shows that the politicians do not know what real cannabis medicine is and many patients will end up in jail or dead, just because they need a potent medicine available in a concentrate. This is like telling a diabetic patient they cannot use a needle to help take their medicine, even though insulin is legal. Nevada patients have to figure out how to get cannabis and then figure out how to imbibe the medicine on their own. This month, I had the opportunity to sit down with Fortunate Youth to find out how the band formed, their thoughts on cannabis and what we can expect with their new album. VCM: Who came up with name Fortunate Youth and what is the meaning behind the name?

FORTUNATE YOUTH: We were all just brainstorming in the living room one day and “fortunate” was the first word that came about. Then “youth” was blurted out by somebody, and it stuck...Fortunate Youth. We just feel we’re the fortunate ones who get to go out and play our music and teach the youth the message of Peace Love & Unity. We just want to unite people and bring people together through our music. VCM: How long have you guys been together and did any of you play together prior to Fortunate Youth? FORTUNATE YOUTH: It’s been 6 years now. Travi Bongo (Percussion), Dan Kelly (Vocals) & Jered (Keys) played in a band called Rude Boy Roots for a little & Corey (Bass) & Greg (Guitar) played in a band called Irie State of Mind for a little bit.

FORTUNATE YOUTH: Definitely one of the best moments while on the road was being able to play Cali Roots this year and be on the same stage where Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire. We definitely brought some fire of our own …if you know what we mean. VCM: Ever been kicked out of a venue because of cannabis? FORTUNATE YOUTH: Funny enough, now that Colorado is legal, their venues are much stricter on people smoking inside because the laws have changed. They will tell you to just go outside and smoke out front because it’s legal. VCM: Clearly you are pro-cannabis - Do you support the movement to fully legalize? FORTUNATE YOUTH: We are big supporters of anything that can help others and even wrote a song about the movement on our new album with a song called “Pass the Herb” which features Marlon ‘The Ganja Farmer” Asher and C from The Green. VCM: Favorite cannabis strain? FORTUNATE YOUTH: We are definitely OG fans, but will never turn down a taste of a new flavor.

VCM: Dan, your sound is extremely unique. Where are you from? Who inspires you? And, do you write your own lyrics?

VCM: You just released the Don’t Think Twice album what can fans expect on this album?

DAN KELLY: I am from Tupelo, Mississippi. Inspirations include Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughn, B.B. King, Bob Marley Grateful Dead and Sublime. But I’m really a Blues man... It’s mostly a collaboration to get the final product. We all brainstorm concepts and storylines to provide input. But yes, I’d say 70% of the time I’m writing my own lyrics. Sometimes like in the song “Melody”, other band members write the lyrics and bring them to the group but every song has its own history!

FORTUNATE YOUTH: They can expect a musical journey from front to back that we highly suggest being a part of.

VCM: What are your favorite songs to perform?

VCM: Any last words or quotes?

FORTUNATE YOUTH: Everyone has their favorites (Dan’s is Some Might Say) but we all just love to play from beginning to end no matter what tune we are jamming and vibe with the crowd.

Are Plant Waivers Legal? By: Adam Graves

Let’s set the record straight about waivers to grow more than the legal limit of 12 plants. Some patients possess such a waiver as given by their doctor to treat their medical condition. This “waiver” is only a doctor’s recommendation that the amount of medicine permitted by law is not enough to treat the condition and therefore the patient should, in their medical opinion, possess or grow more in order to treat the condition. This does not create an exemption from prosecution or increase the amount a patient is legally permitted to possess or cultivate. Law enforcement will disregard the waiver and will most likely arrest the patient. Law enforcement sees these “waivers” all the time when busting illegal grow houses and therefore will not give any sympathy to a patient holding such a waiver. The only time this “waiver” is beneficial is after charges have been filed against the patient. The waiver allows the patient to give the court notice that the patient intends to raise an affirmative defense that the excess amount was medically necessary under Nevada law. The patient will have to prove this defense

at trial. This may require the patient to hire an expert witness and will allow the jury to decide if the patient and his or her attorney proved this defense by a preponderance of evidence. There is no guarantee this defense will work either. However, if a patient received a doctor’s recommendation, the “waiver,” stating that he or she needs more than the amounts permitted under NRS 453A.200 to possess or cultivate in order to treat the condition, will assist the defense at trial if the patient was following doctors recommendations to treat a medical condition. At trial certain things must be shown as a part of the affirmative defense: •

The patient has been diagnosed with a chronic or debilitating medical condition within the 12-month period preceding the arrest and has been advised by his or her attending physician that the medical use of marijuana may mitigate the symptoms or effects of that chronic or debilitating medical condition.

• The patient is engaged in the medical use of marijuana. • That the greater amount is medically necessary as determined by the person’s

attending physician to mitigate the symptoms or effects of the person’s chronic or debilitating medical condition. Therefore, the waiver is not really a waiver – you can still be charged with a crime – but it can help proof an affirmative defense if you are charged. Anytime you exceed the permitted amounts you are at risk of criminal prosecution, which can cause a great deal of stress and be a financial burden. Even if you have a legitimate condition, never use in public, try not to bring attention to your self and be aware that if you exceed the permitted amounts you will have to raise this as a defense at trial. Cannabis Growing and Traveling: Can They Coexist? By: Chris Egan

Summertime; to many people this is the time to pile the tribe in the family truckster and hit the road. Time to get away to places we seldom visit and do things we seldom do. Whether it’s visiting family or just getting out of town, we all have reasons to travel, but for growers this is an especially complicated matter. This is an issue that I most recently encountered when an old friend came to visit and saw my garden. His response: “I could never do this. I travel too much.” The cultivation of medical cannabis does require almost daily attention. But one does not have to give up the freedom of traveling in order to continuously grow. In fact, while I’m writing this I’m sitting on a beach outside of Santa Monica while my garden happily thrives along without me at home. There are many different factors that patients have to consider before they start packing their bags and hitting the

road. More importantly what type of grow medium are you using and how often does it need to be checked? Who do you entrust to take care of your plants in your absence? Here in Nevada, our laws mandate that only registered patients are allowed to cultivate plants. That may leave some of you with limited options, while others still have many to consider. After all, leaving your months of hard work to somebody is not something to take lightly. Careful consideration about who you entrust your garden to and proper timing is critical. For me, personally, I have a very small circle of patients that I trust to care for my plants. For the most part, they are all growers themselves, but I look for a few other qualities. In general, I try to choose a person that is a professional (full time job), who would regard this as a minor inconvenience. Trust me when I say be mindful of people that are eager to take charge of your plants. It’s been my experience that these are the types who already have an agenda with your plants in mind. The length of time you plan to spend away should be a factor when you consider who to leave your garden with. Shorter trips and weekends away are a lot easier in general. Most times a few simple tricks will help most growers take a long weekend away without having to worry about their gardens. There are lot of products available on the market to help. For example, automatic waters, timers, drip systems etc. These all have their selling points and merits but they would not be my first choice for my own garden. For shorter trips away (2-4 days) many of my patients are able to get by using one simple trick. This is intended for soil. After making a fresh batch of nutrients fill your ice trays with it. Freeze them and make frozen nutrient cubes.

These then can be placed on top of the soil and allowed to melt over time. While melting they will deliver your nutrients to your plant over several hours to a few days. This trick works great for me, it’s also a lot less complicated then trying to find someone. There is some debate as to whether freezing nutrients damages the components on a cellular level. I can say from my own experience that I have never seen any negative reactions to using frozen cubed nutrients. So until I see prevailing science saying otherwise, I will continue to recommend this to patients because it’s simple, it’s cheap and it works! Longer trips away are a little more complicated and require a little more preparation, but are still worth the work. First, remember that giving access to your garden is giving access to your home while you’re away. For many patients this is difficult to deal with, including myself. After that the biggest thing is to ensure consistency in your nutrient regiment while you are gone. Regardless of how many times you show somebody how to do something, people by nature are all different and will do the same things differently. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Remember, a proper nutrient regiment is paramount to the best harvests. This can be accomplished very easily, before going, prepare all the nutrients that your plants will consume while you are away. This way you are not left explaining your instructions to someone over the phone while you are vacationing. This also takes out the possibility of someone not mixing nutrients correctly. I have been growing many years and still occasionally screw up when making a batch of nutrients. It happens, but it doesn’t have to kill your plants. With a little bit of preparation and effort you should be returning home from vacation with a thriving garden waiting for you. So get out and visit patient friendly states (there are many now), meet other growers, see and learn from the problems they face. Happy travels and gardening. It’s that time of year again, summer festival time! This year has seen many returning festivals with the addition of several new secret sesh’s, cups, and championships. I had the pleasure of attending the Chalice Festival this year in San Bernardino, California and wow; what a difference from any Vegas event! Now I do realize that the laws in California are much more lax than those in Nevada but the difference in…..well, everything is enough to make me skip all the other festivals and save up for more Cali events. The first night I attended the official Secret Sesh, hosted by Adam Mill, which was a huge success. I’m unsure what impressed me the most about this kick starter event; the excessive samples of medicated products, the incredibly low suggested donations, or the awesome energy that emerged from the entire building. No matter what it was, it started off this eventful weekend perfectly. Saturday morning saw the official start of the festival with a line that wrapped around an entire city block just to get inside. Getting past the gate and seeing that huge Chalice statue had my heart racing like a child on Christmas, a cannabis filled Christmas. The very first booth I saw was the Vegas valley’s own Vegas Botany, Official Genius, and Nailed it Extracts who proceeded to dab myself and the Clark County Cannabis Club out properly at 10 am and set the pace for the entire day. There were so many creative booths, I was relieved knowing that I had both days to see everything and as it turns out, I still missed quite a bit. With each booth being more impressive than the next, my flowerloving self headed out in search of raw product. I felt this may be a tough find as these cannabis events are mostly concentrates but finding amazing bud wasn’t too hard. I ran across a few decent strains like the Pasadena OG and some Charlie Sheen but my winner, again, was DK Organics and their Pheno C. As the day went on I started to notice the smiles on people’s faces. Everyone was medicated, they were happy, and positive energy flowed throughout the entire NOS Events Center. About mid-day the stage woke up and hosted a non-stop run of on point, crowd pleasing music. So there I was in the midst of an amazing cannabis festival, heavily medicated and eating infused Gelato with the club when I realized that this entire event was actually a glass show and I hadn’t even started looking! Knowing this I turned around, headed back to the beginning and started again. Not only was this an excellent opportunity to dab at the booths that I missed but now it was time to really get serious. I came across a huge tent that housed the weekend’s glass blowers, who graced us with the ability to watch them work their magic. I have a love for glass but after Chalice, I have a whole new appreciation for the art of glass blowing. It takes time, care, and patience to form a respectable glass piece. Seeing the intricate work that goes into each rig was very humbling and I swore at that very moment I would take better care of my bongs. Each booth had a unique piece of some sort, from Motherships to a Faberge Egg to a Muppet Rig; I was definitely honored to medicate with so many astonishing pieces of glass work. I won’t lie, I’m no glass expert so I spent most of my alone time learning about different rigs, nails, and carb caps when I was re-introduced to the Mille! How could I forget about these little gems?!? If I had a thousand dollars on me I probably would have spent it all on those tiny, creative, glass blower signatures. I’m positive that the Chalice festival will continue to grow and become more successful and impressive year by year. If you get the chance, I highly suggest you head to San Bernardino next year and allow Doug and his crew to impress you.

Mushroom Kushetta One of my favorite things to do is to share some good food and good bud with friends. So let’s combine the two shall we! My Roasted Mushroom Toastettes are the perfect little HAPPYTIZERS for a get together with your nearest and dearest. So ‘Canna be a Chef?’ …YES YOU CAN! Bong Appetite! Ingredients: • 1/2 cup Baby Bella Mushrooms • 1/2 cup Shitaki Mushrooms • 1/2 cup Roasted Red Peppers • 1/4 cup Sweet Chili Peppers • 2 tbsp Capers • Olive Oil • 1/4 cup Cannabis Oil • Ricata Solata Cheese • 1/4 cup Baby Spinach • Fresh Parsley • Sourdough Bread Directions: In large skillet throw in a little olive oil to coat the bottom of the pan. Throw in your mushrooms, roasted red peppers, chili peppers, and capers. Sauté for about 10 minutes. Add baby spinach, fresh parsley, cannabis oil, and capers. Sauté for about 5 minutes. On toasted sourdough bread, spread the mixture in skillet over the top of the sliced breads and top with Ricata Solata cheese. Pour remaining canna oil over toastettes. Serve as Happytizer.

Cannabis Oil The NOT so secret ingredient: The Happy Chef Cannabis Oil. I have listed amounts of cannabis used as a dosage from regular to strong. I suggest to start with the regular as I do not know which strain you are using. Remember, you can always eat more! Ingredients: • 4 cups oil • 1/2 oz of cannabis REGULAR • 3/4 oz of cannabis MIDS • 1 oz of cannabis STRONG Method: First, pour whatever oil you decided to use into a large skillet or double boiler. Put your stove top on a medium heat setting. Let it warm up...DO NOT let it boil...this is VERY important for quality cannabis oil. Now, once your oil is hot you may add your finely ground cannabis into the skillet. Then TURN DOWN heat so it is just below simmering! Make sure you stir frequently and watch out for boiling...DO NOT let it come to a boil - BUBBLES ARE BAD! If you start to see it bubbling just remove from heat and let it cool down. You are going to continue this for 3-4 hours. Every hour take a wooden spoon and dip in oil and make a dot on a white plate. You will see the oil go from clear to dark green. You want it a good shade of green. Do not cook any less than 2 hours or more than 6 hours. You risk under extraction and scorching. After approximately 4 hours, turn off heat and let oil COOL DOWN...let it cool enough so you do not burn yourself. Then, grab cheesecloth or a metal strainer and strain to remove all oil from cannabis into a container of your choice. (I use jars). Shelf life is around 2 months. You may also put in freezer for a longer shelf life. Discard cannabis in cheese cloth/strainer. WHO Made this, WHO Made that. That’s not a question, it’s a statement. WHO Loves Glass. WHO is a Las Vegas Glassblower, father, and cannabis enthusiast, WHO, is relatively new to the glass scene, but WHO has already started making an impact and is gaining a nice following fairly quickly.

WHO: I started in late 2012 at the Dopeass Glass studios here in Las Vegas, NV, where I continue to work. I had the opportunity to work under Bob Dillingham, aka Dr. Bob. As my mentor, he has shown me the fundamentals of flame working, ins and outs of our industry, and introduced me to the owner of Dopeass Glass, Phat Jack, Who gave me the name WHO. WHO’S INFLUENCES: Which glass blowers have been influential to you? WHO: There are so many talented glassblowers that influence me locally in Las Vegas like Lekseno, Ethereal, Hash Wookieman, Rocko, E-Bomb, Drakken, Curse, Pakua, etc. But my all-time favorite is Marcel, with his knowledge, allaround skill, and humility. WHO LOVES GLASS: What are you focused on making right now? WHO: Prodo, prodo, prodo. Filling orders and transitioning into more customs and limited-edition series. WHO LOVES HIS WORK: What is your favorite thing about working behind the torch? WHO: I love being able to create. I like to connect with people. I love that what I am making is eventually going to be used by someone. WHO CARES ABOUT COMMUNITY: How do you think we can better the Las Vegas glass community?

What They Don’t Want To Teach You - The Endocannabinoid System By: Dr. Aseem Sappal

Whether you’re in med school, studying to become a pharmacist or some other discipline of science; we are all taught the same basics of human anatomy and human physiology. We learn about the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, and even the endocrine system, but nowhere in the table of contents or glossary will you find the term endocannabinoid system. It’s time for that to change. This is important because the endocannabinoid system is literally the key - the connection between cannabis the plant and the human body. It’s also important to point out that this subject is critically devoid from our text books and literature. The Endocannabinoid System: We are focusing on a system that contains particular molecules, called endocannabinoids that send out specific signals within the human body. These molecules are located in the central and peripheral nervous systems and these signals help regulate pain, appetite, memory and mood. These endocannabinoid molecules trigger responses once they bind with receptors in the endocannabinoid system. Your brain produces these endogenous cannabinoids which, and here is the key - have similar effects to the main active ingredients in cannabis, such as THC. These endogenous neurotransmitters lock into the same receptors as THC does when it enters the body. This demonstrates that the properties of the cannabis plant can hereby mimic your body’s internal triggers and responses which are known to be therapeutic and curative in nature. Cannabis Plant: A flowering plant that has three main species, indica, sativa, and ruderalis. The constituents of each species can produce varying percentages of different cannabinoids. Cannabinoids: Chemical compounds isolated in the trichome of the cannabis pant, which bind with receptors of the endocannabinoid system. These compounds act like keys that fit into a key hole - the key hole being the human receptor. This union can positively affect inflammation, pain and the immune system. At least 65 cannabinoids have been identified thus far. The more often researched cannabinoids are: THC, CBD, and CBN. THC: Tetrahydrocannabinol is regarded as the primary psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. Thought to stimulate neurogenesis and help with neuroprotection. CBD: Cannabidiol is regarded as not being psychoactive. Works as an antiemetic, anti-anxiety, and anti-inflammatory. CBN: Cannabinol is a product of THC degradation. THC degrades when exposed to air or sun, therefore increasing the cannabinol levels. Regarded as being less psychoactive. Thought to be antibacterial and to aid with insomnia. Cannabinoid Receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1: Located in the brain, central nervous system and reproductive systems. THC typically binds to the CB1 receptor. CB2: Located in the immune system and peripheral nervous system. CBN is more prevalent here than in the CB1 receptor. Keep in mind that there is much more to learn about the interaction between cannabinoids and the human endocannabinoid system. We have a need for research, clinical trials, and data. The lack of research in the United States is due to the schedule 1 classification of cannabis, hence it is blocked from federal funding for research. As a result we have gaps in cannabis pharmacology for example. These gaps ultimately hinder a physician’s ability to provide for cannabis patients. Removing cannabis as a Schedule 1 substance will help advance cannabinoidbased medicine and the modus in which we navigate the endocannabinoid gateway. It begins by preparing our medical students while they are still in school. The fact that our nation’s healthcare providers are seeking cannabinoid based education after graduating college and not while studying in medical school is as backwards as a retrograde neurotransmitter – that’s an inside joke to all of us medical marijuanerds!
