CALIFORNIA'S

T

MEDICAL CANNABIS REGULATION AND SAFETY ACT (MCRSA) he California Bureau of Marijuana Control released the longawaited proposed text

of regulations for medical cannabis testing laboratories last week. The proposed California medical cannabis testing regulations surpass the previously perceived stringent cannabis testing regulations in place in Nevada and Oregon. The regulations’ thoroughness is the result of two years of extensive work by three State agencies. There is a digestible, yet dense 46-pg abridged version and a more reasoned 294page document that contains much more than testing lab regulations. This document also contains proposed regulations for other cannabis businesses and the rules for their operation and what reaches the dispensary shelves. Although local municipalities could decide on further rules. Altogether, it is evident that the State of California aims to reign in the medical cannabis industry with patient safety foremost in their deliberations. Significant effort was made to define terms and provide impressive detail across all topics from how an accredited testing lab should perform its internal quality control (QC) program to what type of container and cold storage conditions should be used to transport samples to the lab. I was appeased to read that test results are to be presented in terms of dry weight, something that the State of Nevada was never successful in adopting. Homogeneity testing will also be required. There is a lot of superb guidance in the proposed medical cannabis regulations especially for sampling, method validation, quality management and the QC requirements that laboratories will need to institute. However, if the proposed regulations advance, there will be very real challenges ahead for California medical cannabis testing labs in terms of documentation requirements under ISO17025 accreditation, expanded testing methods and adulterant lists to be monitored. In addition, a new breakout of action limits based on the cannabis product category for solvents, pesticides and heavy metals. The categories vary by adulterant, but in general there is a distinction made between products to be inhaled versus eaten or transdermal.

Did You Know?

Marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopeia from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed for various conditions including labor pains, nausea, and rheumatism. In order for someone to overdose on marijuana, they would have to consume about 1500 pounds of it, in a space of about 15 minutes, which is almost impossible. The first recorded use of marijuana as a medicinal drug occurred in 2737 B.C. by Chinese emperor Shen Nung. The emperor documented the drug’s effectiveness in treating the pains of rheumatism and gout.

Challenges will also exist for cannabis growers and producers who will have a substantially higher adulterant-free bar to clear their flower and products through to the dispensary. More of their products will be diverted to testing with mandatory 0.5% per batch with sample duplicates also required at time of sampling. Yet there is more to come as both California and Nevada are in the final throes of settling on temporary regulations for recreational cannabis, including the pass/fail test criteria. While the similarities between medical and retail are obvious, the same safety concerns should exist for patients as well as for consumer public health. Exacting the same stringent medical marijuana testing requirements onto the retail market appears to be the only option.

>>> DoobieDuck COASTAL CANNABIS MAGAZINE: How long have you been photographing cannabis?

CCM: Your male plant photos are truly one-of-a-kind, tell us what inspired them?

DOOBIEDUCK: I have been serious about cannabis photography since the early 70’s when starting my first grows. At that time I joined cannabis web forums like marijuanagrowing.com and icmag. com which I found as special places where I could meet likeminded growers and share my art.

DOOBIEDUCK: Male plants, if undisturbed, out of any wind or air flow, will build up a large amount of pollen when ripening. When I walked past one I was saving in an isolated room for breeding one day just the vibration of my passing caused a cloud of pollen to drop. That immediately caught my eye, I envisioned this as an image that very moment. You don’t see male images often and I saw a need to share and show them to people who were not familiar with them just like I do with the females. My images have been great tools for growers and breeders to use as references. They have inspired hundreds of new photographers. I often hear from cannabis patients that my images make them smile when they see them. Something I cherish is hearing that and helping patients in any way possible. Even if it is something so little as a smile, I too am a suffering patient and understand.

CCM: How long have you been growing cannabis? DOOBIEDUCK: I have been growing cannabis since the early 70’s too. My favorite strains to grow are my own hybrids. Early on, I created many crosses and bred with the intention of creating something unique to photograph. Now, preserving the old genetics I’ve acquired is my main focus for breeding. My favorite strains to photograph are anything unique or out of the ordinary. I have worked with many of the world's leading breeders for years, growing out their genetics to photograph and share with the world on the web. I’ve done some promotional work as well, such as Tom Hills seed pack design. CCM: Do you only photograph your own plants? DOOBIEDUCK: No, I take on special assignments for anyone that needs cannabis photography done but my disability issues are now hindering my traveling and undertaking of that type work. I will always consider projects.

CCM: You also do amazing diorama photos, what was your inspiration there? DOOBIEDUCK: I really can’t say what inspired them other than my desire to capture something that would shake up the people on social media; they did just that, and have ever since! A little something interesting for those of you that like the diorama photos is that the greenhouse, the cabin, windmill, benches, some of the bushes and trees were all handcrafted by me.

ART & CULTURE

11

They, along with my hummingbirds and cannabis photos are the reasons for my continued notoriety and ever growing popularity. CCM: And last, but certainly not least, give us some insight on your eye catching hummingbird photos. DOOBIEDUCK: I have captured wildlife and hummingbird images for 40 years and have always had feeders around my home. For no special reason, other than to watch their beauty, I placed a feeder near my grow years back. With a dozen or so birds flying around the feeder competing for nectar I noticed some of the birds wandering off flying up to the cannabis colas in my grow. They often do this, flying up to anything tall near a feeder when they are frenzying around competing for food. They are just searching for the nectar they need to survive when flying up to cannabis. I’ve never seen them feed on, or even attempt to feed on cannabis. I’ve never seen them touch the colas or the plant. Somehow they can discern from looking there is no nectar there for them and they then fly off rapidly, which really makes capturing these type images even more difficult. It is only the placement of my camera and the lenses used that makes it appear as if they are feeding on the plant in my images; they do not feed on cannabis which I mention often on my site and the web as I do not want to deceive anyone. But, my images are inevitably shared often all across the net with misinformed headlines such as “hummingbirds feasting on cannabis.” That is something I try very hard to correct when I see it. My hummingbird images are not photoshopped, they are single frame digital photos captured in one moment in time, nothing added. CCM: Where can interested buyers find your photos? DOOBIEDUCK: My cannabis images and art are available as prints and enlargements on-line now in my Smugmug store via www.cannabiseyecandy.com. I often take on special orders via the email listed on my site, doobieduck.com. I’m limited by my health nowadays and can no longer travel to do retail shows like the Emerald Cup, which I miss dearly. CCM: Can we follow you on social media? DOOBIEDUCK: Yes of course. I have a large following on Facebook as Jeff Scheetz and several pages there that can be found by searching for @macroimagery or @ doobiesgenetics. I am also on Instagram as DoobieDuck, with a large and growing following there. I truly appreciate my friends, fans, and followers and would like to say thank you to everyone on social media who follows, likes, and shares my art. It is their comments and likes that inspire me to continue what I do. I have been a member of just about all the leading cannabis growing web forums for many years as well.

THERE’S MORE Understanding the Entourage Effect

C

alifornia, like many other cannabis markets has experienced consumer demand for high THC cannabis flowers. Consumers have associated higher THC numbers with a stronger “high”, but this can be an incorrect correlation. The most potent strains of Jamaican cannabis, known for its long history of superb cannabis cultivation, frequently have THC levels in the 15 to 17% range. The reason these strains produce potent effects is because of the entourage effect. The term entourage effect has been used to describe the synergistic interaction that occurs when

cannabinoids, terpenes, and many other lesser known compounds present in cannabis flowers are consumed. The lack of clinic trials and well-designed scientific studies has limited our understanding of this effect, but as we learn more about the compounds present in cannabis, we will learn more about how they interact in the human body. Nearly 500 pharmacologically-active compounds have been identified in cannabis. It is very likely that many more compounds will be identified as more scientists are permitted to study cannabis. Laboratory testing of medicinal and adultuse cannabis has introduced consumers to some terpenes and cannabinoids, but correlating laboratory results to anticipated effects can be challenging and dependent on the individual. Terpenes are very potent and are thought to influence animal and

human behavior when inhaled; these effects can occur at serum concentrations of less than 10 ng/ml. Cannabinoid ratios and terpene profiles likely significantly influence the effects, flavors, scents, and potential medicinal benefits provided by a strain, but they are not the only compounds involved in producing these effects. In addition to more than 80 cannabinoids and 130 terpenes, cannabis contains non cannabinoid phenols, pigments, flavonoids, anthocyanins, stilbenoids, alkaloids, elements, steroids, nitrogen compounds, amino acids, proteins, lignan amides, and various other small molecules. While very little information has been published on many of these less prevalent compounds found in cannabis, limited research has suggested some can produce a variety of potential health benefits. Like terpenes, flavonoids are also found in many other fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. There are more than 6,000 naturally occurring flavonoids. One group of flavonoids called anthocyanins are responsible for many of the different pigments in nature such as the blue in blueberries, red in cherries, and the purple in some cannabis strains. Anthocyanins are potent antioxidants; they do not have an aroma but they contribute to taste. Other flavonoids possess anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-neurodegenerative, anti-cancer, and powerful antioxidant qualities. Apigenin, orientin, kaempferol, and quercetin are a few flavonoids that have been found in cannabis. There are also some flavonoids that are unique to cannabis called canna flavins.

Stilbenoids are a group of compounds found in cannabis that also possess strong antioxidant properties. Resveratrol is a stilbene, found in grapes and red wine, that some believe is associated with longer life expectancy, mental strength, as well as liver, kidney and blood health. Stilbenoids are also found in red wine, tea, cocoa, and blueberries. Research on these compounds is promising but still ongoing. Nonetheless, these compounds likely add to the medicinal effects and/or psychoactive experience when smoking or vaping cannabis flowers. Another group of compounds that can be found in cannabis are lignan amides. Cannabis contains a series of lignan amides called cannabisins that are unique to cannabis. Certain forms of cannabisins are found in the seed while others are found in the flowers. Some cannabisins have shown antioxidant properties as well as promise for treating Alzheimer’s while others have anti-inflammatory qualities and promote heart health.

KILLE PACKAGING DESIGN Patients buy it for the design, and love it for what’s inside!

As we learn about the compounds present in cannabis flowers, new classifications can be developed to help transition away from the “Indica, Sativa, hybrid” system to a system of classification that will help consumers better predict the effects a strain will produce. It is important to remember that cannabis is an extremely complex cocktail of active compounds so predicting the effects a consumer will experience is no trivial task. It is clear that we are just scratching the surface on discovering and understanding the potential of cannabis. Due to cannabis' classification as a Schedule I substance there are many challenges associated with uncovering its full potential. Most of our understanding of the effects of cannabis has been generated from anecdotal evidence, pseudoscience, and statistically-limited studies; there is no exact formula for what strain is best for a specific ailment or person. Proper analysis and identification of the different concentrations of compounds found in different cannabis strains is paramount, and it is important for medicinal patients and adult-use consumers to take note of what cannabinoid and terpene profiles are present in the strains they enjoy and find beneficial. Consumers must also remember that there are many more compounds present in their bud that contribute to the effects they enjoy than simply the THC that is on the package label. insurance MARIJUANA BUSINESS

Yes, you can insure your business!

>>>

BY DALE A. DISKANT CORINTHIAN CAPITAL

You paid an attorney to help you start your business. You need an accountant to take care of your taxes. But over the long haul the one who is going to protect your business, the building, equipment, your income and now your actual product is your insurance broker. Most companies in the United States have an Insurance broker, and sometimes two. One for Property Casualty and one for Life & Health. Here at Corinthian Capital we do both. Actually, insurance for the marijuana Industry has been around for over ten years and the carriers are very large, “A” rated insurance companies.

16

Marijuana business insurance, like the marijuana industry itself is evolving. Insurance policies insuring a new risk, at first, were not the greatest. They were often overpriced and not covering much because the insurance companies had no risk experience. Insurance companies are statistical analysis companies. They analyze information to determine a cost for their insurance coverage. This process is referred to as “underwriting.” To understand insurance you need to look at one of the first types of insurance. It goes back to the “Jack Sparrow days” with first ships carrying cargo. They used to carry a lot of fertilizer and under the right

conditions the ships would blow up. So, the shippers got together and decided to each put a small amount of funds in an account after every voyage, and if their ship blew up they would draw from the account to recover their losses. Simply, it’s a large number of people putting a small amount of money in a fund that will help the ones that are not so fortunate. That is modern insurance. And like today, they had to be careful of insurance fraud. In the marijuana business, one of the abuses was crop insurance. If the grower messes up the crop in some way (ex: over juicing), it is not an insurable claim. But the claims poured in and crop insurance was pulled from the market.

COASTALCANNABISMAG.COM

The good news is crop insurance is back and it includes better coverage, stiffer underwriting and a better price. We can now insure up to 10mil per location of living plants and pesticide & herbicide application endorsements in your general liability policy. Along with crop and general liability, there also is product liability (for whatever you're making), property (for the harvested plant) including transportation/cargo, equipment breakdown and worker’s compensation. You may be wondering who we can insure. The list is quite long and includes: Indoor and outdoor cultivators, processors/ harvesters, wholesaler/distributors, business-to-business transportation, franchisors, dispensaries/retailers, manufacturers of both cannabis and non-cannabis products, wholesale distributors/brokers, laboratories, property management, landlord/building owners, tobacco retail stores, retail/wholesale garden and hydroponic stores, pot doctors (standard malpractice only) and lawyers (same thing, standard E&O policies do not cover pot advisement), pot universities, consulting firms and security companies.

This will be a three-part piece on insurance and the marijuana industry and in future issues I will go into greater detail regarding policies. In closing, I would like to talk a bit about worker’s compensation because I’ll bet most of you are currently in violation. The fastest way to get shut down, not only for the marijuana industry, but any company that has employees, is not having or being in violation of worker’s compensation laws. In a nutshell, worker’s compensation is priced via your payroll. So, in a regular corporation (LLC, C Corp, S Corp), the owners who make the most can be exempt from worker’s compensation coverage. But, as of Jan 2, 2017, according to my state fund underwriter, non-profit companies must have all working officers included in their worker’s compensation calculations. Worker’s compensation is mandatory in all states, but the laws are different in each state. So, you need to check with your state compensation program. We can help! For example, California only requires W-2 employees to be covered under worker’s compensation while 1099 employees or independent contractors

\\ #CCM \\ COASTAL CANNABIS

are exempt. But, in other states it doesn’t matter, all employees must be counted for worker’s comp. Also, non-profit officers have minimum and maximum income guidelines. Meaning, if you are only paying yourself $25k, the minimum just might be $34K and the worker’s compensation underwriter is going to price it at $34K. This is called “minimum premium.” I hope this was informative. Please look for the continuation of “Marijuana Business Insurance” in the next two Issues. For any questions or to start the quoting process, call 877-315-3443 or email us at corcap@ live.com. Corinthian Capital Marijuana Business Insurance. See our ad on the back cover!

High Times in NorCal Who doesn't like to get high? I'm not here for alcohol. I'm not here for the carnival food. I'm not even here for the badass music which is always live on stage. I'm here for the fucking weed, dude. If you enjoy cannabis and have not yet been to a High Times Cup, let me just start by saying, “You're missing out!” Imagine if you will, a cannabis swap meet. If you have already been, or frequent other cannabis festivals, you already know that it's much more than a swap meet, it’s an adult, super-amusement park. Unless you have to work during the event, then you need to plan your breaks wisely. Whether you are a noob, or a frequent flyer, it's the people that make the events what they are. When I think back to the many events and shows that I've been to, I remember the people, and the many positive personalities that made each show fun and interesting. It's fun just to people-watch at High Times events. I have NEVER witnessed ANY violence or fighting, and I can't say that about any other place that serves alcohol. Cannabis regulates people in many ways. High Times Cups provide a much-needed outlet for people to cut loose a little. But, High Times Cups are not just about partying, and having fun. There is also a cannabis competition which has many different categories, awarding each winner a medal, ring or cup, depending on the event. Brands can enter their products, and stake their claim in the industry. Get out there to the next High Times Event. They are doing it in Michigan next! Do they need magazines out there?

Wake up and smell the Toffee. Puff on this E-Juice, and get a little THC into your lungs. It smells and tastes like warm, chocolate coffee. Using the included medicine dropper was easy. I squirted some into an empty vape cartridge, and I hit it like a champ. E-cig vapor is heavy and humid on the chest. To me, it feels someone draped a wet blanket across my chest. This vapor takes a little getting used to, just a little. EL GALLO is a family business that started in the Vape E-Juice industry (non-cannabis), and launched a perfect hybrid idea. To best describe it to someone who's never tried E-juice, I'd say your lungs fill up fast and the vapor is moist and heavy. Hitting this E-juice a few times opened up my lungs. I like it, especially for blowing trick clouds. And it tastes like warm, cherry sarsaparilla. I got a quick head change from this lowkey device. Available in 1500mg and 6000mg bottles, this THC sizzurp is not for sissies. It even says on the label “not to drink it all unless you have the day free, and if you can handle it.” And, instructs you that “If you wake up naked, call Dr. DODO.” I pounded a 6000 mg/g bottle on stage about a year ago, and man was I high. This time, I shot the whole 1500mg for breakfast. Be careful, though, if you're a beast, you should still take it easy, it might put your ass to sleep. I hit the indica vape cartridge using my handy, dandy, little ultra discreet battery and felt amazing! My head was light, and my legs were heavy. Use this product medicinally to ease pain, increase appetite, and rest up. I didn't have complete lab results, but it's obvious that there is a shitload of myrcene. I also felt the familiar effects of caryophyllene, which is a major stress-reliever and natural anti-anxiolytic. Boom! TŌK also makes sativa and hybrid vape cartridges for your daytime enjoyment. 1 Gram - 1,000mg each

TŌK Ultra Discreet Battery

TŌK has a very catchy name to complement neat packaging and a very clever vape cartridge battery pack that looks like a key fob (even equipped with a key ring eyehole). Who sucks on their keys all day, though, LOL. This is an extremely handy device that stays by your side. Well, unless you lose your keys or lock them in your car. Don't get stuck without your weed! I came up with a phrase to prevent locking your keys in the car…“Squeeze the Keys!” I used to say this every time I locked up my ride. Now we just lock it up from our key fobs. Pretty soon, we will be able to lock up the car with our vaporizers. Until then, put your keys in your mouth, and I'll put my foot in mine.

CURISTA Mood Elevator Medicinal Vapor Cartridge

Elevate your mood. Hey, just cuz you take the elevator, doesn't mean you're going up. Sometimes people need a little pick me up. Give this a few kicks, and get into the mix. The cannabinoid content depicts a predominantly CBD mixture, so if you're looking to keep a straight head while activating your cannabinoid system with CBD, this for you! CURISTA CO2 Oil is derived from organic cannabis, and all packaging has multiple child-resistant features. It's a mini puzzle getting to the product. Nice touch. CBD- 38.8% THC- 1.3% Terps- 3.0%

STONEY J1 Vape Cartridge

STONEY Lids

Stoney Lids are super-duper-fresh to wear on top of your messed-up hair. You can rock one at a sesh in Bangladesh, or put it in your back pocket. It's not mesh. It's a high quality Stoney Lid. We stopped at their booth, and we're glad that we did. Cuz they got us faded, and hooked us up with these bad-ass Lids, Stoney treated us like it was Christmas, and we were their little Stoney kids.

Hit this like a champ and experience a convenient way to get high. Vape cartridges aren't new to the industry, but many square folks out there have no fuckin clue what’s in an e-cig and what gets you lit. Even the most intelligent, hypocritical, conservative alcoholics won't have the foggiest idea that what you're exhaling is THC. J1 didn't come with lab results or a detailed terpene profile, but I can tell that this oil is loaded with myrcene and caryophyllene. My head feels great!

CURISTA Pain Reliever Medicinal Topical Ointment

CURISTA Stress Reliever Medicinal Vapor Pod Kit

This is a great 3:1 CBD:THC ratio for both flavor and medicinal qualities. CBD helps deliver THC straight to the brain. So, 18% THC might feel like 40%. Hit this shit! This is an awesome packaged kit. I had to charge the battery upon assembly, but once it was charged, it fired up well and blew fat clouds. The battery and cartridge system are unique, and extremely sleek. The modern black on black slender look of the unit was very pleasing. My friends kept trying to take my shit. I felt like I was Yoda, slapping hands saying, “Mine! Mine!” Crowd pleasers here. CBC- 54.5% THC- 18.3% Terps- 86 mg/pod

Good medicine here. I love finding products that are geared towards the patients who need legitimate medicinal relief. Many people are hesitant to open their minds and consider the fact that cannabis could actually replace some of their traditional medicine. Once they open up, they then realize that there are many cannabis products that do work for their physical and mental problems, they become passionate about medical marijuana, and realize it's not a gimmick or loophole for people that just want to get high. Don't get me wrong, I like to get high more than you do. That's why I snag the strong heady products too. But make no mistake about CURISTA, they are here for the patients. Every single thing I analyzed here, screamed MEDICAL USE! Love that shit! Good job! 1:3 - CBD:THC THC- 75.8% CBD- 24.2% Terps- 0.82 mg/mod

CANNABIS TREATMENT FOR COPD

>>>

BY DR. KIT, PHARM. D, RPH.

hronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) is a progressive disorder that makes it increasingly more difficult to breathe. Along with difficulty breathing, other symptoms of COPD include increased mucus production, coughing, and fatigue. COPD affects over 30 million individuals in the United States. Two-thirds of those affected by COPD (regardless of cause) are over age 45, and prevalence varies from state to state. Some of the most prevalent states are those located along the Ohio River, such as Kentucky. It is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., behind heart disease and cancer, with almost 150,000 deaths each year attributable to COPD. COPD is caused by repeated exposure to lung irritants. While most commonly associated with irritants due to tobacco smoking, it can also be caused by exposure to irritants from second hand smoke or air pollution, irritants from workplace exposure to inhaled toxic chemicals/dust, or even as a result of severe, uncontrolled asthma. Rarely, it can be caused by a specific genetic disorder called alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, which decreases the body's ability to protect itself (especially the lungs and liver) from the toxic effects of exposure to certain proteins in the body.

and decreases elasticity of the lungs in order to minimize exposure to the irritant. After exposure to the irritant is removed, the lungs then return to normal, widening airways to allow greater flow of air in and out of the lungs. However, with repeated exposures to lung irritants, the lungs lose the ability to readily return to normal. Airways remain narrowed due to inflammation, and mucus that is not removed by coughing can then plug the narrowed airways, resulting in difficulty breathing.

How does COPD occur? When the lungs are exposed to irritants, the body produces mucus, which helps the body cough out the irritant, and it causes inflammation that both narrows breathing passageways

Researchers are starting to investigate the use of cannabis as a treatment for COPD. Cannabis has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. Lung irritants, including allergens

Standard treatments for COPD include inhaled anti-inflammatory steroids, inhaled bronchodilators (to further open airways), and inhaled and oral medications designed to decrease mucus production. As COPD progressively worsens, medications are increased (both in number and strength), and when these medications no longer control symptoms effectively, supplemental oxygen is added. Supplemental oxygen, while necessary to maintain adequate oxygenation, hinders quality of life for patients. Patients are limited in what they can do, as they must have a cumbersome oxygen tank (which only lasts a few hours) or a portable concentrator machine (about the size of a large purse) with them at all times.

EDUCATION & HEALTH and smoke, are seen by the body as foreign invaders, and the body mounts an inflammatory response to them when they enter the lungs. Repeated exposures, with their subsequent releases of inflammatory chemicals, lead to the symptoms of COPD. In a 2010 review, researchers found that two major cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), have been shown to decrease the immune response. They affect the chemical signaling of the cells, by decreasing production of anti-inflammatory chemicals, which in turn decreases the natural killing function of the cells in response to an attack by a foreign substance, such as smoke or allergen. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also has a known effect of opening up airways, believed to allow more cannabis to be absorbed from the lungs. After smoking cannabis, airways are opened in approximately 15 minutes, with effects lasting up to 1 hour. By opening up airways, patients with COPD are more readily able to breathe out more carbon dioxide. Researchers from the University of SĂŁo Paulo investigated the effect of two different doses of cannabidiol (CBD) on experimentally-induced acute lung inflammation in laboratory mice. The mice were exposed to an irritant substance called lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which causes lung inflammation in the mice. After exposure to LPS, measurements were taken of lung elasticity and markers of inflammation. Six hours after exposure to LPS, the mice were injected with either 20 mg/kg or 80 mg/kg CBD. Researchers then measured lung elasticity and markers of inflammation 24 hours after exposure to LPS (10 hours after receiving CBD). The mice showed increased lung elasticity and decreased markers of inflammation relative to levels taken prior to cannabidiol injection. No significant differences were found between the two CBD doses. Could cannabidiol also prevent lung inflammation? The same group of researchers from the University of SĂŁo Paulo, in an earlier study, injected 20 mg/kg CBD into lab mice, then exposed them to the irritant LPS. They measured chemical markers of inflammation 1, 2, and 4 days after exposure to the irritant. They found that all of the chemical markers were significantly decreased compared to those that had not received CBD prior to exposure to the irritant LPS. So cannabis could be beneficial to treat COPD, but how should it be taken? Does smoking cannabis cause or worsen COPD? And are there some routes that may be more beneficial than smoking for COPD? In 2014, researchers from the University of New South Wales School of Medicine reviewed over 150 published studies on the effects of cannabis on lung function. The researchers also noted that some studies did not separate the effects of tobacco smoke from the effects of cannabis smoke on the lungs, nor did they separate the effects from other known COPD risk factors such as age, sex, race, or presence of existing asthma or other lung disease. While acknowledging several major limitations of the studies, the researchers concluded that cannabis smoking's effects on the lung are affected by

several major factors. They also identified several areas where cannabis could contribute to COPD or other lung disease. The amount and frequency of smoking, whether joints or other smoking devices are shared, and which device is used to smoke, all affect how cannabis affects the lungs. Increased sputum production and cough inhibits the ability to move air well, leading to feelings of breathlessness and decreased oxygen to the body. Lung irritants, such as combustion products (resulting from cannabis smoke) and cannabis flower contamination both from chemicals used to grow cannabis and also from unseen mold contamination, can lead to lung disease and lung obstruction. Increased amounts of smoked cannabis were associated with increased measures of difficulty breathing, cough, and sputum production. Sharing joints or pipes could increase the risk of infection. Presence of one or more of these factors increases the risk of COPD. However, researchers discovered that those that used a vaporizer to smoke cannabis had decreased symptoms of cough and phlegm production when compared to smoking cannabis from a joint or pipe. In a 2015 study, researchers from Emory University looked at the effect smoked cannabis has on a more specific measurement of COPD severity: the ability to remove excess carbon dioxide from the lungs. Over 7500 U.S. adults, aged 18-59, participated in a national study on health and nutrition, and researchers studied the over 5500 adults who also completed respiratory measures as a part of the study, which was conducted between 2007 and 2010. Of these adults, approximately 59% had used cannabis at least once, and approximately 12% had used in the past month. Researchers looked at frequency of cannabis use in joint-years, with each joint-year equivalent to smoking one joint or pipe bowl daily for one year. Researchers also accounted for additional factors, such as age, race, sex, tobacco exposure, economic status, and history of either asthma, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis, which could account for increased risk of COPD. Researchers looked at two types of measures: self reports of respiratory symptoms and the ratio of the amount of carbon dioxide forced out in one second relative to total amount forced out in a breath (FEV1/FVC), as measured by an incentive spirometer. They looked at self-reported symptoms, and noted that, like similar recent reviews, habitual cannabis smokers have increased cough, wheezing, and phlegm, with a slight trend toward increased respiratory infections. However, contrary to earlier studies, no significant difference in the ratio of FEV1/ FVC was found between those with no cannabis use and those with up to a 20 joint-year history of cannabis use. Those with a greater than 20 joint-year history had a slight decrease in the ratio of FEV1/FVC, but that was because of an increase in the total amount forced out per breath (FVC), not due to a decrease in amount forced out in 1 second (FEV1), as in those with COPD. Smoked cannabis, while not shown to cause or to significantly worsen COPD overall, may worsen the phlegm production and cough associated with COPD, and thus may not be the ideal choice to treat COPD. Other options for treating COPD with

EDUCATION & HEALTH cont. cannabis include edibles, vaporized inhaled cannabis flower, cannabis-containing inhalers, and cannabis oil. Edibles, while convenient to use and long-lasting, take longer to take effect. Vaporized cannabis flower and cannabis inhalers allow cannabis to be delivered directly to the site of inflammation. They have a quick onset of action, and they do not result in the amount of coughing or phlegm production as smoked cannabis. Vaporizers are more readily available than inhalers; however, inhaled or vaporized cannabis requires frequent dosing (as often as every 1-3 hours), as it wears off more quickly than edible cannabis. This frequent dosing may be impractical for some patients. Cannabis oil presents another option for patients in the treatment of COPD. Used more commonly for cancer or epilepsy, it is beginning to be looked at as a treatment for other diseases for which cannabis may be beneficial. Cannabis oil can be given under the tongue, vaporized, or even given rectally for quick absorption. It allows for more concentrated dosing, which can allow for fewer doses. While few published studies exist, several anecdotal reports can be found on the effectiveness of cannabis oil to treat COPD. Cannabis provides a new option for the treatment of COPD. It has been shown to reduce some of the inflammation associated with the disease, and may reduce some of the anxiety associated with the feeling of breathlessness. However, while smoking cannabis has not been shown to cause or significantly worsen the ability to breathe out carbon dioxide effectively, it can lead to increased coughing and phlegm production, which can worsen the sense of breathlessness. Other available routes for using cannabis to treat COPD include edibles, vaporizers, inhalers, and more recently, cannabis oil. So put the "chronic" in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and use your favorite cannabis to breathe a little easier.

AND CANNABIS >>>>

llergies affect so many people from all walks of life. Here on the west coast, seasonal allergies seem to hit us hard and can be very unpredictable. Luckily, for those residing in California, cannabis is currently available for medical use to help reduce or treat symptoms associated with these unpredictable and pestering allergies. Did you know there are many cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis plant matter that have incredibly therapeutic benefits when it comes to allergies? Cannabis can act as a bronchodilator, decongestant, and expectorant. Cannabis also modulates the immune system and reduces inflammation equally or even better than our prescription or over the counter medications. So, put down the nasal spray, antihistamines, and decongestants and get to feeling better with our favorite green plant! Here are just a few important examples of how cannabis can be a powerful ally to your allergies:

Bronchodilator:

A substance that dilates the bronchi and bronchioles, decreasing resistance in the respiratory airway and increasing airflow to the lungs. The cannabinoid delta-9 THC and terpenes a-pinene, limonene and linalool are known to have bronchodilation effects.

Decongestant:

Medicines that relieve congestion by reducing swelling, inflammation and mucus formation. Terpenes limonene, linalool, camphene, and isopulegol have been shown to assist with decongestant properties.

Expectorant:

Promotes the secretion of sputum by the air passages, typically used to treat coughs. Terpenes a-pinene, camphene, limonene, linalool, and cineole have been identified as expectorants.

Inflammation:

Complex biological response of body tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants. Cannabis is a major anti-inflammatory. Most cannabinoids that we know about assist with decreasing inflammation and many terpenes also play a role including THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, bisabolol, humulene, a-pinene, caryophyllene, myrcene, limonene, and linalool.

Immune System Modulation:

CBD CBD CBD!!!!!! Cannabidiol is such an amazing substance. Our bodies release antibodies to fight infections, sometimes when we don’t need our bodies to do this, which creates inflammation. Our immunomodulator decreases the inflammatory response. CBD works to prevent our bodies from creating too much inflammation!

Please note, not all coughing is bad. If you feel as if you are coughing because you have mucus in your chest, try coughing and getting the phlegm out first. As a nurse, I encourage people who have sedentary lifestyles to cough and deep breath every 2 hours. This promotes opening the lower parts of the lungs and helps with gas exchange which equals more oxygen into the body. You are what you eat! The food you put into your body can affect how much mucus is being produced in the body. Avoid dairy, red meat, processed meat, gluten, alcohol, and sugar if mucous production is an issue for you. Staying hydrated with alkaline water will also be beneficial in decreasing mucus secretions. Being a California resident gives you a huge advantage to finding the cannabis products that will work best for you. Medicine found in your local cannabis retail stores are typically tested. The most common cannabinoids you will have access to are delta 9 THC and CBD. The highest terpene values you will find include myrcene, limonene and linalool, pinene, bisabolol.
