Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally on our planet. Doesn’t the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit... unnatural? -Bill Hicks

Editor’s Note The holidays are upon us and as usual, this month will be hectic. As we scramble for those last minute gifts and struggle to complete our picturesque home decorations, the true meaning of the holidays can easily be lost. Regardless of one’s religious beliefs or family upbringing, the holiday season should be about giving up our instinctual, selfish ways and putting the needs of others before our own. Keep an eye out for an acquaintance or neighbor that is alone and may not have anyone to celebrate the holidays with. Consider purchasing an extra Christmas card for someone serving in the military or for someone serving time in prison for cannabis. Maybe take the whole family to a local food bank or soup kitchen and assist with preparing and serving meals to those less fortunate. Or, purchase an extra gift for a child in need.

Whatever you do, please do not exercise the choice to do nothing, live your life with purpose. Each of us is capable of brightening someone else’s existence. Sometimes by lending a helping hand and other times simply with a smile. The joy that you bring to others will come back to you. So, enjoy this holiday season and all that it brings but be sure to practice love, positivity and generosity all year long.

California is the largest producer and distributor of marijuana in the United States. One acre of hemp can produce the same amount of paper as approximately 4 acres of trees. The medical use of cannabis dates back to 2737 B.C. No one has ever overdosed or died from smoking too much marijuana. There are more medical marijuana dispensaries than Starbucks in Los Angeles and Denver. Over the last decade, the New York Police Department has spent one million hours making 440,000 marijuana related arrests. A recent study proved that cannabis aids both lung and breast cancer and does not cause ANY form of cancer. The legalization of cannabis would save the United States an estimated $14 billion per year. Despite these facts, marijuana remains federally illegal. This Domain and Logo Available

Ready or Not, Change is Coming By: Jennifer Solas Are you down with Mary Jane? If you are like 61% of Americans you are not only down with Mary Jane but you have friends that are down with her too. We as a nation and we as a community are increasingly in love with cannabis and cannabis reform. But are we ready for change in Nevada? Nevada is beginning the largest change in its medical marijuana program since its inception. Naturally, there are a great many questions associated with this monumental restructuring of the process and procedures we have all become familiar with. There are numerous questions regarding distribution, testing, licensing and many other issues appearing daily. For me personally and professionally I have one major question: What about education? It seems that we have a tidal wave of people wanting to get into the cannabis business without giving full consideration to the many needs of the patients in Nevada. Something to consider is that when individuals begin asking dispensaries to recommend a particular strain for a specific medical condition, won’t that person actually be giving medical

advice? Even if just offering a casual recommendation, don’t you really feel as if the people offering this advice to patients here in Nevada should have some training not only about cannabis but also about things such as disease process, anatomy, physiology and alternate methods of delivery besides smoking? When testing laboratories become involved in Nevada for the very first time will we be truly educated about the results the dispensaries and cultivators are producing. We must ensure that the caregivers and patients of Nevada have the training and understanding to recognize the value of edibles, tinctures, butter and endless other cannabis derivations that may actually impact an individual’s medical condition. There is no question that we will have the dispensaries, cultivators, production and testing labs in short order; however, there are many other components of this exploding industry that will be appearing in the next few months. Companies have begun offering cannabis education for professionals. I personally have been teaching in the medical field for eleven years at a post-secondary level so when

I saw a “medical” class offered by “industry experts,” I went ahead and took a couple of courses but left feeling as if the courses were lacking in real medical education. For that reason, W.E.C.A.N. will be offering classes and videos for industry education and training. These 2-hour classes will cover topics that are timely and educational for the cannabis professional as well as patients who want a better understanding of their medication. Topics will include accepted medical uses in Nevada, and basic understanding of the disease process and will be available both online and inperson. Beginning in December, W.E.C.A.N. will be starting several different classes and meetings for patients, caregivers and those interested in furthering their cannabis education. The cost will be inexpensive ranging from $5.00 to $20.00 per class. The nutrition for wellness will begin in the first week of December and will be followed with a cannabis cooking class, those interested may come for one or both classes. These classes will also be archived monthly online for repeated access

to those attendees who want to watch the class again. Basic grow classes will be offered in the second week of December and will also include video archives. The first cooking classes will be for patients only so that they can take home some of their handiwork, but will be available online for all to see for free. That is W.E.C.A.N’s holiday gift to you! Happy Holidays to everyone. W.E.C.A.N. is a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit that first started as a Meetup group. It currently has nearly 600 members. Cannabis As a Medicine

By: Dr. Kathleen Smith

Cannabis is one of the oldest know psychoactive drugs. It was used in China 2700 years ago for its medicinal properties. It traveled from China to India and it was in India that Dr. W.B. O’ Shaunessy first heard of its medicinal benefits and introduced it to western medicine. In 1849, the New England Journal of Medicine even had an article supporting its use in treating Multiple Sclerosis. It is now known that cannabis plays a role in treating or curing over one hundred diseases and conditions. It is an interesting fact that Queen Victoria used cannabis regularly for her menstrual cramps. Many of my patients today regularly use cannabis to treat their own menstrual cramps. It is commonly agreed that cannabis is effective in the treatment of a variety of ailments such as insomnia, pain, and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, asthma (although not as a cigarette), colitis, crohns disease, and ulcerative colitis. It is also a prominent medication to use in the treatment of anorexia,

loss of appetite and irritable bowel syndrome. There is still much to learn about the medicinal properties of the cannabis plant. Prohibition on research into the medical properties of cannabis occurred with the instigation of the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937. This was pushed into law by Henry Anslinger, the first head of the Federal Narcotics Bureau. Mr. Anslinger believed use of marijuana would increase crime and mental illness. In 1942, Fiorello LaGuardia, then Mayor of New York City challenged this claim by Anslinger. He had a group of prominent scientists evaluate whether cannabis would lead to an increase in crime and mental illness. The Laguardia Commission concluded that cannabis use did not increase crime or mental illness. These findings as well as several other government commissioned research projects to determine medicinal properties of cannabis were all ignored, even though the findings in every study proved that there were medical benefits.

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • DECEMber 2014 • 8

The Controlled Substance Act of 1970 classified marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug, meaning it has great potential for abuse and NO accepted medical benefit. My goal with this article is to demonstrate known scientific facts about cannabis and its medical benefits. When studying the many beneficial aspects of the cannabis plant, it is clear that marijuana has been classified incorrectly. The psychoactive component in cannabis is Delta-9-THC (tetrahydrocannabinoid) which is present in the resin exuded by the flower of the female plant. Seventy other cannabinoids exist, many of which have medicinal properties such as Cannabidiol a potent anti-inflammatory property. CBD 1-4 in the purified oil form is used for a variety of cancers due to its ability to selectively cut off cancer cell blood flow. Terpenoids and flavonoids, another component of cannabis improve blood flow to patients with poor circulation. Cannabis acts on body cell receptors labeled CB1 and CB2. The brain has the highest concentration of CB1 receptors while CB2 receptors are found high in the immune system cells.

This allows its positive benefits with control of pain, intraocular pressure, cognition, emesis, neuroexcitability, immune function, muscle control, appetite and thermoregulation of the body.

End the Insanity:

Free Those Serving Time for Cannabis Photo: Eddy Lepp & Kitty Miller To date, there have been no reported deaths from marijuana usage. And, people nationwide have attested to the countless medical and environmental benefits of the plant. Why then do we still have citizens of our so called “free country” sitting in jail cells for the cultivation of cannabis? Medical use of cannabis dates back to 2900 BC where it was utilized in China for its healing properties. Our country’s founding fathers were also cultivators of the hemp plant. “By 1850, marijuana made its way into the United States Pharmacopeia (an official public standards-setting authority for all prescription and over-the counter medicines), which listed marijuana as treatment for numerous afflictions, including: neuralgia, tetanus, typhus, cholera, rabies, dysentery, alcoholism, opiate addiction, anthrax, leprosy, incontinence, gout, convulsive disorders, tonsillitis, insanity, excessive menstrual bleeding, and

By: Stephanie Shehan uterine bleeding, among others.” It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that states began passing marijuana prohibition laws. Eventually, in 1937, under United States Federal law, the first marijuana related arrest was made and on October 2, 1937, at age 58, Samuel R. Caldwell was arrested and convicted for selling marijuana. It wasn’t until the early 1970’s that marijuana was classified as a Schedule 1 drug insinuating a high potential for abuse and no valid medical use. Today, we have both young and old following medical marijuana protocols for dreaded illnesses such as cancer, epilepsy and Crohn’s disease. It has been shown to treat a wealth of ailments and has helped many people transition from deadly pharmaceuticals to a more natural approach. Many states have proven compassionate and have medical marijuana laws in place to protect those treating themselves. We even have a handful of states

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • DECEMber 2014 • 16

in which marijuana is considered completely legal. Yet, federally, this plant remains illegal and those with their hands in the “pot” face a daily risk of raids, jail time and monetary fines. The marijuana dispensaries, collectives and cultivators operate on the hope that they will be left alone, on the hope that the state they are in will protect them from conviction. Most in the cannabis industry are working towards a common goal which encompasses an end to prohibition, the individual freedom to grow one’s own medicine and the freedom to treat one’s own family as each sees fit. In the coming issues of Vegas Cannabis Magazine, we will be featuring individuals who are currently serving time in prison for cultivating and/or selling marijuana. Please consider taking a moment to write to these individuals or better yet, consider putting a small amount of money on their books to be used for normal, everyday items that we sometimes take for granted.

If you attended the first annual Las Vegas HempFest, it is likely that you had the pleasure of hearing Kitty Miller speak about her dear friend Eddy Lepp. For many years, Eddy Lepp and his now deceased wife Linda Senti ran the Healing Fields in Upper Lake, CA. It was with their help that thousands of people were provided medical marijuana free of charge. Additionally, many more were provided their medicine for just the cost of growing which was approximately fifty cents per gram. In 2009, federal authorities raided the Healing Fields which contained approximately 30,000 plants and Eddy who was 56 years old at the time was sentenced to ten years in prison. A prison cell is no place for a former war veteran whose mission was to assist people in

treating potentially life threatening illnesses. For anyone supporting the cannabis movement, incarceration in a cold, lonely jail cell for nothing more than a plant and a desire to help fellow man should be unacceptable. Federal laws need to be changed and prohibition needs to end but until either happens, we need to support those that have risked their lives and their freedom to help others. To write to Eddy, send correspondence to: CHARLES E. LEPP, INMATE# 90157011, FCI FLORENCE ADMAX CAMP, 5880 HWY 67 SOUTH, FLORENCE, CO 81226. Cannabis and Kids: A Personal Insight By: Jessica Parks On January 14, 1998 I delivered my first child. He was amazing, perfect, and beautiful. Although he was 4 weeks premature, he was 100% healthy and I was able to take him home after the usual three days. Markell changed my way of living. He was such a sweet and peaceful baby. He grew and developed completely normal and maybe even at a quicker rate than other kids. Early on, he started walking and speaking in full sentences. He was thriving, interested in science and animals and learning as much about the world as he could. Everyone would tell me what an amazing child he was. He seemed to have an “old soul” and anyone who met him, knew it. Life happened. I ended up in a seriously abusive relationship while Markell was still a baby. I had my second child when Markell was just 2 ½ years old and I knew that if I didn’t leave town, that this man was going to kill me. I moved to the Central Coast of California and delivered my 2nd son on my own. No man, no mom, no friends. Being alone was hard. I worked and went to school, while raising two boys on my own. The struggle showed, and soon I found myself

in another unstable and abusive relationship with a man who happened to be a grower. Although I had grown up around cannabis farmers, I had never been fully educated on the medical benefits of this incredible plant. I learned by growing it – how to utilize the medicinal properties of cannabis – root to flower! I was able to ease my arthritis symptoms. And after a life of abusive relationships, I learned that smoking cannabis relieved SEVERE anxiety and depression symptoms. I was so excited about the natural relief I was getting, I researched medical benefits of cannabis and hemp in every way that I could. I started to talk to doctors. And as I looked online, I learned about MILLIONS of ailments that were being treated by medical cannabis. Along with all of the positives I uncovered came the big negatives. Specifically, the United States Government, the War on Drugs, and the rest of the world’s opinion on marijuana after having been lied to for close to 70 years. Unfortunately, these agencies and opinions had a major impact on my life as we were raided two times in

less than one year. A total of 43 officers threw grenades through my windows and busted down my front door. There was no knock or “police, open up” type of warning. They blasted through my home at 5am while my children were asleep and my man was out of town. Markell was 8 years old at the time, and although he had witnessed a lot of violence and drama in his life, he wasn’t equipped to deal with this at such a young age. This terrorizing event tore apart my family. My ex was thrown in jail until we could fight and sue the city back for unlawful entry. They didn’t find ANYTHING in my house so, eventually he was released and all charges were dropped. But, it took almost eight months of courts and attorneys and money that we didn’t have. The fight for freedom took its toll on my ex and he became deadly abusive. I ended up in a homeless shelter to start a new life for myself and my children. Soon after leaving the relationship, I learned that I was pregnant again. I was scared and alone again but this time pregnant, with two young boys in tow. Thankfully, I was able to acquire my medical marijuana card in California with

the assistance of my doctor who believed in the benefits of medical cannabis in pregnant women! She encouraged me to drink medicated tea and cook with cannabis as much as I could. It helped with nausea, pain, insomnia, anxiety, stress, and so much more. In my previous pregnancies I would have a cocktail of pills to take in the morning. This time, I was feeling so much healthier and had an abundance of energy. Life happened again. I went to Boise Idaho for a family funeral and ended up having an emergency cesarean section 2 ½ months early. Although my doctor in California was cannabisfriendly, the doctors in Idaho definitely were not! After having my baby, I was charged with child endangerment and was referred to a drug treatment program. I was outraged! I am an attentive mother and I care so much about having a healthy child that I refused conventional drugs that were so easily prescribed over and over. This fueled a desire in me to make a change. I had to tell other people about how much this plant was helping me. I wanted to shout to the world about the hundreds of benefits I was gaining by using only this plant as my medicine. I prayed, and I was blessed with the opportunity to work in one of the first social cannabis clubs in America, as a radio host. Working with Larry Kirk “LK” and Raphael Martinez, was one of the most enlightening experiences of my life. These guys were educated activists that showed me how much my voice mattered. I learned, during that time, that children were being treated for serious illnesses by ingesting

cannabis oil extract. Markell was showing severe signs of posttraumatic stress disorder or PTSD from all the previous traumas in our life and he was diagnosed with Tourette ’s syndrome in 2013. We immediately obtained a medical marijuana card for him and started him on the oil and within days noticed a significant improvement in his symptoms. He ingests cannabis oil for pain and to help with his concentration. It helps him with depression and anxiety as well as insomnia. For clarity, please know that although my son is a 16-year old with a medical marijuana card, he does NOT smoke! We have chosen edibles, salves, and concentrates as the healthiest way for him to medicate. He is an intelligent child, with great grades and he is very involved in sports and weight lifting. Without cannabis, he is in excruciating pain from uncontrollable muscle spasms.

which states that “there are no medical benefits.” This is a blatant lie. Educate yourself and get active. Do not wait for a horrible diagnosis for yourself or someone you love to care. CARE NOW. After being raided twice in 2006, she learned her life’s purpose and has dedicated her journey to the education and legalization of cannabis.

Because of our awesome results from using this safe plant, I have made it my life’s goal to educate and eliminate the fear surrounding this medicine. I love my children with all of my heart. I live to make them safe and healthy. I have seen incredible results from hundreds of parents that use cannabis to treat seriously sick children. Marijuana and Cancer, What Do We Know? By: Allison Howarth President-AllBud.com By now, it’s well-known that cannabis is often prescribed for cancer patients—and that this treatment method is only growing more widely accepted all the time, with more and more states legalizing it and more and more doctors embracing it. You probably know of some of medical marijuana’s uses among cancer patients—specifically, relieving some of the issues brought on by chemotherapy, such as nausea and pain. It might surprise you to learn that the link between marijuana and cancer treatment is stronger than that—and much more complicated. Marijuana is not only useful for relieving pain and nausea. It has also been shown to have a major impact on actually treating cancer itself, in some case shrinking tumors. We’d like to spotlight some of the research that’s been done on cannabis as a cancer treatment— but before we get into the specifics, it’s important to note that there are many different types of cancer, and all of them are treated differently. What’s true of one type of cancer is not necessarily true of others.

Those looking for some general information about medical marijuana/cancer studies— including some preliminary findings about marijuana as an antitumor treatment—can find it online at http://www.cancer.gov/ cancertopics/pdq/cam/cannabis/ patient. Some specifics, about different studies, follow.

can actually cause tumors to grow. Nevertheless, the study confirms the antitumor effects of marijuana—and of THC, in particular—to be worth pursuing, even if their full properties remain not fully understood.

Does THC Shrink Tumors?

Meanwhile, in a report dated from January of this year, it is observed that over one million individuals were diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008 alone—and that the disease causes 600,000 deaths across the world. However, a study from 2013 notes that high-CBD cannabis can be used to selectively target colon cancer cells, degrading them while leaving other, healthy cells unharmed.

To begin with, a report from The Huffington Post, dated to July of this year, notes that one particular compound in cannabis can indeed fight tumors. Says the article: “Published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, the research reveals two previously unknown ‘signaling platforms’ in cells that allow THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis known for producing the ‘high’ sensation, to shrink some cancerous tumors.” Encouragingly, the study in question applies specifically to breast cancer tumors, as induced in laboratory mice; getting the correct dosage is important, however, and the researchers warn that the incorrect dosage

Similar Findings in Colon Cancer Patients

“Researchers were able to reduce tumor growth and pre-cancerous lesions in mice with colon cancer using the pot molecule CBD as part of a botanical drug substance,’” the article notes. Given that most current colon cancer treatments are highly toxic, this is certainly a development worth getting excited over, even if much further testing is still needed.

Further Examples of Cannabis in Action

There are still other positive examples of cannabis showing potential as an anti-cancer treatment—including a report from 2011 that confirmed the efficacy of topical cannabis extract as a skin cancer treatment, specifically a treatment for basal cell carcinoma. Meanwhile, the first-ever studies of marijuana as a treatment for brain cancer are currently under way. We must once again offer the disclaimer that all cancers are different, and for that matter all patient experiences are different— so before pursing medical marijuana as a remedy for your own illness, we encourage you to talk openly with your physician. With that said, the studies mentioned here—just a sampling of what’s going on out there in the

cancer research world—should give all of us some optimism about cannabis and its yet-untapped medicinal properties. Inspired by patient frustration with other online resources, AllBud.com provides a comprehensive, and user friendly way to access information and listings on medical marijuana dispensaries, certifying doctors, strains, and state by state programs. Each listing is reviewed for accuracy and quality standards.

Cannabis Infused Let’s all get something straight here. The holidays are good for just three things: 1. Pumpkin spice 2. Christmas tree decorations 3. The license to eat decadent foods morning, noon, and night for an entire month only to whine about this behavior, put yourself on a guilt trip, and fast for the first three days of January before launching yourself back into the holiday cookie tin. Let’s enjoy it while we can. This spread was designed with holiday grazing in mind. Start your holimornings right with a simple and delicious Holiday Spice Pan Greenola before whipping up a dish of Toke Toke Artichoke dip. Time it so it’s just out of the oven and warm when guests start showing up for your holiday gathering. One of the best ways to incorporate cannabis into your main meal is in the taters. These Herb-N-Herb Roasted Garlic Mashers pair perfectly with the subtle flavor of cannabis and fit in well with virtually every holiday meal. Plus, they’re uncomplicated and almost impossible to fudge up. For dessert: Deadhead

Gingerbread, which can be made into little gingerbread men frosted to look like Jerry or can be made into fat and fluffy gingerbread cookies. Feel free and get creative with these. When the night has grown cold and your guests are gone and you’re still awake thinking about whether or not snagging that gift from your 6 year old niece during the gift exchange game was too brutal (but really, what was she going to do with a solar iPad charger?), you could probably use a warm and comforting beverage. This simple Healing Herb Hot Cocoa will help you relax and sleep through the night... even with the sound of little Cindy’s tears tugging at your conscience and that fat man in red trying to squeeze into your forced air vents. Here’s to having a safe and happy holiday! As with all edibles, start with a small amount and go slow when consuming these recipes even if you’re a seasoned smoker (edibles affect all of us differently). You can find out how to make the cannabis oil used in these recipes on www.wakeandbakecookbook. com.
