Catching Up with Shavo Odadjian to talk CBD, THC and Everything in Between
Most of you probably know Shavo Odadjian as the bass player for System of a Down. These days though, you can find Shavo getting his hands dirty, developing strains for his newly launched cannabis brand. I had the chance to chat with him about the brand, their Nevada launch and his new band North Kingsley. Stephanie Shehan: Why cannabis? Shavo Odadjian: Cannabis has been a part of my life for many years. I appreciate the plant and am excited to bring my favorite strains to consumers within a brand that encompasses the things I am most passionate about. Stephanie: Let’s talk about the name of your company as it has personal meaning behind it... Shavo: The name 22Red is unique and personal to me. My life has been abound with the number 22. I was born on the 22nd of April. I was married on the 22nd day of May. My children are 2 years and 22 days apart. I was 22 years old when I was signed as a musician. And, that was 22 years prior to me coming up with the name 22Red. In my head, all letters and numbers have colors associated with them and I see the color red when I think about the number 2. This is due in part to a neurological condition that I have called Synesthesia which is “the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body.” So, out of all of this, the name 22Red was established. Stephanie: What states are your products currently offered in? Shavo: Our hemp-based products are available online at 22redhemp.com. We have THC-based cannabis products in Nevada, California and Arizona. Stephanie: You partnered with Flower One here in Nevada. How did you decide on that partnership? Are you hands-on in the cultivation?

Shavo: Flower One has a large facility and the team over there is doing it right. I work closely with the staff and I am hands-on when it comes to the 22Red strains. Right now it is difficult with the pandemic and travelling but I do have those that I work closely with that can test our flower as it grows when I am unable to do so. My goal is to ensure that the flower and other products marketed under my brand are up to par. I want to see the good, Cali cannabis that I am used to. All of the flower that we produce
needs to be the flower that I prefer to smoke. Stephanie: When did you launch here in Nevada? Where can we find your products? Shavo: Our Nevada products launched on July 10th. Right now, our products are available exclusively at Essence Dispensaries in Southern Nevada and Rise Dispensaries in Northern Nevada. We also just dropped some very cool 22Red glass pieces that you can pickup at those dispensaries as well. Stephanie: What strains are available now? Will we see more strains in the future? Shavo: We launched with three flower strains in Nevada: 22OG, Animal Mints, and White Sabbath. We also launched two of our disposable vape pens: Kinetic and Peace. Soon, you will be able to get our new vape, Eleven, which is a 1:1 (THC:CBD) hybrid as well as new flower strains, Mimosa 22, and So-Delicious. Our hempbased vapes are available in Strawberry Sorbet, Watermelon, Orange Mint, and Cereal Killer flavors and we have even more amazing new flavors launching in the next couple of weeks. Stephanie: What sets 22Red apart from other celebrity brands? Shavo: Cannabis is something I believe in, I consume the strains that are grown under our brand and in fact, I along with my team regularly visit the dispensaries that carry the 22Red brand and if we come across old flower, we actually purchase it to get it off the shelves. I want all the purchases by consumers to be fresh cannabis. I would rather have strains that are out of stock than to sell old product. I have found that, in fact, being a wellknown musician is actually a hindrance in this industry. People have become accustomed to celebrities adding their names to cannabis lines and walking away. I take pride in what we offer at 22Red and want to make sure that our products are what the consumers are looking for. Stephanie: Your brand includes both a clothing and music aspect, tell us about that. Shavo: 22Red’s mission is to create an amplified cannabis lifestyle that celebrates the creatives of the world. TOPICALS VS. INTERNAL Anytime an herb, drug, or substance is used internally, it must be metabolized before the compounds circulate throughout the body. During the first-pass metabolism phase, much of the original substance is destroyed in the liver, greatly reducing the bioavailability of compounds in circulation. Because of this, applying topical products improves the bioavailability of certain compounds, and for longer. In the case of cannabis, applying a topical product can offer a direct, steady hit of CBD, THC, hemp oil, or cannabis essential oil (or any combination) straight to the troubled area for an extended period of time. Which is why it can be so great for conditions related to the skin or pain. OUR SKIN

The skin serves many purposes, mainly it protects us from the environment, manages hormones and temperature, and signals the nervous and immune systems when problems arise. Those signals allow receptors to activate antimicrobial peptides, lipids, also inflammatory cytokines to help bring things back to normal. One of those signaling systems involved with skin homeostasis and regeneration is the heavily studied cutaneous endocannabinoid system. Studies have found that the endocannabinoid system has an impact on dry skin, hair growth, keratin, inflammatory skin disorders, and well...skin
cancer. Notably, cannabis is not the only plant with cannabinoids, other plants that react with cannabinoid receptors include not only echinacea (Echinacea spp.) and its compound N-alkylamide, turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains the cannabinoid curcumin, but also other plants that contain β-caryophyllene. ABSORPTION The outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum is the key player in the body’s ability to absorb topicals. Since our skin is functionally waterproof, oil based topicals (hemp seed oil, and compounds THC and CBD) are permeable and able to pass through the other layers of the skin through passive diffusion. Beneath the stratum corneum, the epidermis, and the dermis, compounds are able to travel through the vascular pathways of the dermis. Theoretically, CBD cannot enter the body and circulate throughout the bloodstream topically, however, the oil based cannabinoids link up with receptors (CB1 & CB2) throughout the skin to offer the sought after immunosuppressive, analgesic, and antiinflammatory effects. RATE OF ABSORPTION Surprisingly, oil based products that contain lipophilic compounds (essential oils, carrier oils, butters, and waxes) are absorbed quicker than waterbased products. Absorption
also depends on diffusivity and the thickness of the skin that needs protection and defense. Due to the high variability, factors such as skin hydration and integrity, temperature, the type of solvent, and the molecular size of the permeable ingredients all have an influence on how quickly a topical product will absorb and begin to take action. HEMP SEED OIL Hemp seed oil is highly nutritive with a fatty acid ratio that is nutritionally considered optimal. It contains all of the essential amino and fatty acids necessary for human life, including gamma-linoleic acid, which is considered deficient in the average western diet. It also contains minerals like phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc. Hemp seed oil is a brick house for skincare, too! The pressed seeds of the female Cannabis sativa plant, hemp seed oil is the ideal combination of lightweight, beneficial, and healing. If a guess were to be wagered it would be that oils are used in skincare just as often as they are in the culinary world. An essential worker of sorts. All types of oils, including nut, seed, and vegetable oils are used for soothing, healing, and hydration thanks to the lipophilic compounds, like fatty acids, that allow for easy absorption when applied onto our oil-loving skin. Hemp seed oil is excellent as an emollient and is great for hair growth and shine. I personally love
hemp oil in skincare products for the nutrients, natural green color, and because it absorbs quickly into the skin without feeling heavy or greasy like many oils tend to do. Plus that green color makes the skin look glowy and tan, even if you have not seen the light of the day since March. Note: hemp seed oil can be the vehicle for CBD, but hemp and CBD oil are not the same. Be careful, I have found some products listed as CBD FREE, then charge $70 for an ounce of hemp seed oil. Although hemp seed oil can be more expensive than many standard carrier oils, $70 is too much unless it contains CBD...or gold. CANNABIS ESSENTIAL OIL A relatively new area of research is surrounded around Cannabis sativa essential oil, which is the product of steamed distilled live, fresh leaves. So far, we know that β-caryophyllene is the major compound in cannabis essential oil, and the compound directly linked to the CB2 receptor. Researchers have reported that �-caryophyllene may be useful in treating neuropathic pain, anxiety, and depression. Other compounds in the essential oil include myrcene, limonene, pinene and terpinolene, individually showing a unique mix of relaxant, sedative, antioxidant, or anxiolytic benefits. Like many essential oils, cannabis essential oil has shown exciting antibacterial properties. Though the

research is still unfolding, cannabis essential oils have shown to have a relaxing effect on the nervous system. Researchers in Italy took it a step further and initiated the research on the effect of cannabis essential oil on the brain, measuring brain wave activity, heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and temperature. The subjects felt more calm, relaxed, energetic, and were in a better mood with an increased appetite after the study, remaining fairly consistent with the effects of consuming or using any type of cannabis product, except without the psychoactive effects of THC. This was a small study, but expect to hear about more research on the benefits of cannabis essential oil over the next few years. WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS? Essential oils (EOs) are extremely complex mixtures of organic compounds, mostly carbon, hydrogen (hydrocarbon), oxygen, and occasionally nitrogen and sulfur. Each plant species has a unique chemical structure of lipid soluble volatile oils that are captured when making essential oils. Plant essential oil can have up to hundreds of different organic compounds, which make up the aroma and organic benefits. In nature, the variety of compounds often serve a specific purpose (i.e. insect repellent, nutrient absorption), but for humans and animals the variety of compounds is what's attributed to the aromatic and therapeutic properties.

Understanding THCV Cannabinoids, a family of molecules that provides cannabis with medicinal efficacy, number more than 140. First discovered in 1896 by British chemists, solid research regarding cannabinoids did not occur until 1940 in the United States (by chemist Roger Adams). Prohibition of hemp and cannabis in the U.S. beginning in 1937 prevented further significant cannabinoid research until 1964, when Israeli researcher Raphael Mechoulam began a decades-long scientific investigation of cannabis biochemistry. Mechoulam and his team discovered in the early 1990s that cannabinoids interact with a special system of microscopic cellular receptors in the human body called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It has since been discovered that this neurotransmitter network is found within all vertebrates—including mammals and household pets. The body produces its own cannabinoids that are called endocannabinoids. The cannabinoids from a plant like hemp or cannabis, known as phytocannabinoids, are a perfect fit for the cellular receptors of the ECS found throughout the brain, nervous system, and immune system. In addition, cannabinoids do more than function independently to deliver their various therapeutic effects. These wellness molecules also interact synergistically to regulate the effects of one another, something that has been labeled the entourage effect.
MOLECULAR ANALOG OF THC Tetrahydrocannabivarin, or THCV, is a phytocannabinoid that, while closely related to THC in molecular structure, conveys sometimes polar opposite efficacy. Technically, THCV and THC are chemical cousins of one another called

analogs. More specifically, THC is the neutral analog of the infamous molecule, while THCV is the varin analog (any cannabinoid ending in “V” is a member of the varin family). Found most commonly in “sativa” cultivars of the herb, THCV can constitute up to 54 percent of the total cannabinoid volume of some rare varieties. Both THC and THCV bind with the same ECS receptor types in the body, despite their different effects. The most impressive aspect of this cannabinoid is the wide variety of ailments for which it shows promise. Diseases ranging from PTSD and Parkinson’s to epilepsy and obesity may be effectively treated with THCV. It may also support bone health and reduce nausea.
THCV EFFICACY
Many mistakenly believe THC to be the only cannabinoid to produce euphoria in humans. THCV is another psychoactive component of the plant. It results in an alert and motivated state of being featuring an energetic euphoria—quite the opposite of “indica” varieties of marijuana that produce a more sedative effect. THCV has been found to enhance the psychoactivity delivered by THC, but with faster onset and greater potency (depending on dose and the precise ratio of the two molecules). Cannabis cultivars rich in THCV have been shown to exhibit a shorter duration of bioavailability than THC. THCV volumes are reportedly greatest in landrace (naturally evolved) cultivars of cannabis from Africa. This relatively unknown cannabinoid has been shown to suppress appetite and reduce seizure activity and convulsions. THCV also provides a neuroprotective effect, making it adept at relieving the symptoms of Parkinson’s (an age-related

neurodegenerative condition similar to Alzheimer’s) and delaying the progression of the disease. This neuroprotective benefit is theorized to also be helpful for neurological disorders such as multiple sclerosis and dystonia. Another promising application of THCV is treatment of metabolic disorders like diabetes. THCV features the ability to block the CB1 cellular receptors within the ECS, meaning it can buffer the effects of other cannabinoids that work with this common receptor type (including THC). THCV, along with THC, is one of the few cannabinoids to bind with both CB1 and CB2 receptors in the ECS. Such cannabinoids play a special role in modulating the effect of other cannabinoids. Research conducted by the Institute of Medical Sciences discovered that THCV delivers different efficacy depending on its potency. At low doses, it blocks CB1 receptors, meaning the uptake (potency) of THC is decreased. However, at stronger doses, THCV activates CB1 receptors and displays the polar opposite efficacy of increasing the psychoactivity of THC. This dynamic, in which a cannabinoid displays one behavior at a low dose and a different or opposite effect at a stronger dose, is called a biphasic response curve.
REDUCTION OF ANXIETY
The therapeutic effects of THCV are wide ranging. The cannabinoid has been shown to treat anxiety and other mental disorders, including PTSD (Post-traumatic Stress Disorder). According to Steep Hill Labs, a cannabis testing laboratory in Berkeley, California, “THCV has been found to reduce or even block panic attacks and, as a result, can be highly effective in the management of PTSD and other mental disorders involving anxiety.”
SUPPRESSION OF APPETITE
The most pronounced effect of THCV is appetite suppression. GW Pharmaceuticals, a British pharmaceutical company, researched THCV and reported, “In preclinical studies, THCV has shown effects on body weight, fat content, energy expenditure, food intake, and other obesity-related parameters.” Due to its power to reduce or eliminate hunger, THCV could be a tool to combat the obesity epidemic and a variety of common eating disorders. Another chief efficacy delivered by this phytocannabinoid is anti-convulsive properties, making it a candidate for treatment of epilepsy and the goal of less frequent seizure episodes featuring lower severity.
RESEARCH STUDIES
A 2016 study entitled “The Effect of Dosing with THCV on THC-induced Cognitive, Psychological, and Physiological Effects” published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology investigated the interaction between THC and THCV. This double-blind placebo-controlled human trial found the safety profile of THCV to be acceptable. It also revealed that THCV can buffer, or reduce, the
effects of its molecular cousin THC. “Nine out of ten participants reported THC under THCV condition (compared to placebo) to be subjectively weaker or less intense,” reported the study.

The research also revealed that THC and THCV, when combined, increased “memory intrusions.” The researchers concluded, “In this first study of THC and THCV, THCV inhibited some of the wellknown effects of THC, while potentiating others.”
The study concluded, “Given its antioxidant properties and its ability to activate CB2 but to block CB1 receptors, THCV has a promising pharmacological profile for delaying disease progression in [Parkinson’s] and also for ameliorating Parkinsonian symptoms.”
A 2013 study entitled “Evaluation of the Potential of the Phytocannabinoids CBDV and THCV to Produce CB1 Receptor Inverse Agonism Symptoms of Nausea” that was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology explored the ability of the most common varin cannabinoids, CBDV and THCV, to reduce nausea.
A 2010 study entitled “The Plant Cannabinoid Tetrahydrocannabivarin Can Decrease Signs of Inflammation and Inflammatory Pain” that was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology explored the role of THCV for inflammation and pain.
The researchers concluded that both phytomolecules may be of assistance in the treatment of nausea, including effectiveness for chemotherapy patients and those who suffer chronic pain. “These compounds may have therapeutic potential in reducing nausea,” reported the study.
The research found that THCV decreases inflammation and pain resulting from inflammation. “THCV can activate CB2 receptors...and decrease signs of inflammation and inflammatory pain in mice.” The study concluded that THCV may be effective in reducing multiple types of pain, including those based in inflammation and the neuropathic variety.

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers
Last month, I wrote about Governor Sisolak’s wonderful revelation that he and the Nevada State Board of Pardons passed a resolution that would pardon those convicted in Nevada state court for misdemeanor possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. I also explained that the process to do so was as simple as filling out a one-page application and submitting it with your court paperwork. Yet, as of mid-July, the State announced that it had yet to issue any pardons. Of course, the fact that there were delays in the state getting the application form posted online is probably some of the reason for this, but wasn’t this touted by Governor Sisolak as being an expedited process and that thousands would be getting pardoned? Governor Sisolak and the Nevada State Board of Pardons need to buckle down and get these applications processed in a timely manner as promised. Considering it’s a one page application, how much processing can there really be? There is no excuse for the delay. July also began a new era in the way of cannabis regulation and enforcement here in Nevada. On July 1, 2020, the newlyformed Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board began taking over regulation of Nevada’s marijuana industry. As I explained a few months ago Governor Sisolak had authorized the creation of the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board to take charge of the cannabis industry and ensure compliance with all marijuana laws and regulations. If you are familiar with the Nevada Gaming Control Board, it's like that, except for weed. In February, Sisolak announced that former Supreme Court Justice Michael Douglas, as well as former Gaming Control Board chairman Dennis Neilander and long-time Las Vegas banker Jerrie Merritt, were appointed to the Board. Although the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board is supposed to be made up of five board members, two seats still remain vacant. I assume this whole COVID-19 pandemic can be blamed for the still-vacant seats on the Board, but considering the Board is now operational and in command, shouldn’t filling the seats be a high priority? Once they had their authority, the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board did not hesitate to start enforcing the laws and regulations as they relate to cannabis in Nevada. In one of their first disciplinary actions as a board, the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board issued a $1.25 Million penalty/fine to CW Nevada – aka Canopi. The $1.25 Million penalty is the highest penalty issued against a marijuana company in Nevada. In addition, of the 14 marijuana establishment licenses held by CW Nevada, 6 were revoked. The remaining 8 active licenses have

been ordered to be sold by a court-appointed receiver in order to pay CW Nevada’s creditors and employees. CW Nevada was accused of having significant amounts of marijuana that was considered “off the books” and was further accused of selling untested marijuana and even destroying evidence. Based on the complaint filed by the State of Nevada, CW Nevada/Canopi sold 1,793 products that had not been tested in a lab and were missing certificates of analysis. This is not only disturbing, but dangerous! People rely on lab results and trust that marijuana establishments are following the law and ensuring their products are safe for consumption. If the product isn’t being tested, how can the consumer be sure it is safe to consume? They can’t. And that’s one of the reasons I believe the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board came down so hard – to make an example and set the standard. The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board also lifted the moratorium that had been put in place on the transfer of marijuana licenses back in October 2019 when allegations of unscrupulous actors trying to enter the Nevada marijuana industry and shady inside-deals in the license awarding process surfaced. The moratorium was put into place until new procedures and regulations could take effect that would help absolve some of the concerns raised. Until the moratorium was lifted, marijuana businesses in Nevada were effectively hamstrung and unable to finalize mergers, transfers, or anything that affected the ownership of the license. According to the state, there were 92 transfer requests that had been pending when the moratorium was lifted. Between the moratorium and the COVID-19 pandemic, Nevada marijuana establishments have been going through it! Hopefully now that the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board is up and running, we will have a bit more oversight and effective regulation of the cannabis industry here in Nevada. Such traumatic events include warfare and combat, child abuse, automotive and industrial accidents, sexual assault, terrorism, and other crimes or serious threats to one’s welfare or life. About half of Americans will experience a traumatic event at some point during their lives; 7-8 percent of these cases will result in PTSD. It is estimated that eight-million adults in the United States currently have PTSD. According to the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health, about 3.6 percent of Americans experience PTSD in a given year. An analysis of afflicted audience segments reveals that women are nearly three times more likely to develop PTSD than men. The condition occurs in 5.2 percent of women, but manifests in men at a rate of only 1.8 percent. Up to 30 percent of soldiers returning from military combat experience PTSD. The main symptoms of this crippling condition include anxiety, depression, and flashbacks that sometimes result in debilitating panic attacks. PTSD is often accompanied by pain, sleep disorders like insomnia and nightmares, and extreme anxiety that may result in antisocial behavior and panic attacks. Patients with PTSD experience negative symptoms in response to particular environmental stimuli called triggers that powerfully remind them of their initial trauma. Because cannabis aids in a mechanism called memory extinction, it may help PTSD sufferers reduce the association between trigger stimuli and the traumatic event from their past that is the source of their affliction.
Dr. Phil Leveque was an Oregon physician known for the large number of medical marijuana permits he issued for PTSD. Prior to his death in 2015, it is estimated that Leveque dispensed more than 1,000 such permits for PTSD. “Whether they were World War II, Korea, Vietnam, or vets from current conflicts, one hundred percent of my patients said [cannabis] was better than any drug they were prescribed for PTSD,” reported Leveque.
Patient Testimonials
Despite a lack of human clinical trials, anecdotal information is abundant regarding the potential benefits of cannabis for PTSD. Desperate patients, many of whom have tried but gained no benefit from conventional treatments, routinely experiment with the herb. This is obviously easier for those living in states that have legalized adult or medical use of the herb for conditions such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and PTSD. Reported a PTSD patient who is a healthcare professional and had severe reservations about the physical and legal consequences of consuming cannabis, “I wanted to feel better, to be myself again and the person I was before the PTSD. I smoked pot [and] immediately felt relaxed and calm. I smiled and laughed. I felt at peace for the first time in two years. I slept my first night in three years without sleep medication.” Another patient, one who served in combat and endured a gunshot to the head, suffers from epilepsy, chronic pain, clinical depression, PTSD, and severe anxiety. “I am still alive because I smoke [cannabis] every day. Empirical evidence has proven to me that a failure to [consume cannabis] generally causes [me to] seizure and, at a minimum, I get really aggressive. I will not live on narcotics. Ibuprofen and aspirin have side effects worse than any temporary pain.”
“There is mounting evidence demonstrating the benefits of medical cannabis for individuals suffering from PTSD,” said Chris Lindsey, legislative analyst for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. The greatest role of cannabis for PTSD is a reduction in stress. This benefit helps prevent many PTSD symptoms, including depression, panic attacks, sleep disorders, and episodes of anger.
Research Studies
In 2009, New Mexico became the first state to allow PTSD sufferers to legally treat their condition with cannabis. 27 percent of those holding a medical cannabis license in the state qualified because of PTSD. In fact, PTSD is the most common qualifying condition in New Mexico.
The study found that CBD relieved PTSD symptoms, including sleep disorders such as nightmares. “Administration of oral CBD, in addition to routine psychiatric care, was associated with PTSD symptom reduction,” reported the study. It added, “CBD also appeared to offer relief in a subset of patients who reported frequent nightmares.”
Conventional Treatments

Advocates for research regarding the efficacy of cannabis for stress disorders like PTSD often cite the unsatisfactory results produced by conventional pharmaceutical treatments. These traditional therapies include drugs that carry the risk of negative side effects and addiction, including Effexor (Venlafaxine), Paxil (Paroxetine), Prozac (Fluoxetine), and Zoloft (sertraline).
A 2019 study entitled “Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder” that was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine investigated the efficacy of the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) for PTSD. The research revealed that “91 percent of participants experienced a decrease in PTSD symptom severity” when consuming CBD.
Another 2019 study entitled “Cannabis: A Potential Efficacious Intervention for PTSD or Simply Snake Oil?” that was published in the Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience found an unhealthy ECS to be a common characteristic of PTSD. “Low endocannabinoid (eCB) tone contributes to the...anxiety and hyperarousal symptoms characteristic of PTSD,” reported the researchers.
A 2017 book review conducted by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) entitled “Benefits and Harms of Cannabis in Chronic Pain or Post-traumatic Stress Disorder” reiterated the findings of previous studies that indicate a relationship between PTSD sufferers and cannabis use. The review found that a large portion of veterans seeking cannabis through the VA did so for treatment of PTSD. “Over one-third of patients seeking cannabis for medical purposes list PTSD as the primary reason,” reported the review. It also found that “15 percent of veterans who are treated in VA outpatient PTSD clinics” reported using cannabis for their PTSD within the previous six months. A 2016 study entitled “Cannabinoids and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Clinical and Preclinical Evidence for Treatment and Prevention” that was published in the journal Behavioural Pharmacology cited the relationship between cannabis and patients suffering PTSD. “It has been shown that there is increased prevalence of cannabis use in PTSD patients and vice versa,” reported the researchers. This literature review, which examined previous research regarding cannabis for PTSD, concluded that one of the chief mechanisms by which cannabis treats the condition is an improvement in sleep combined with a decrease in hyperarousal. “Preliminary studies in humans suggest that treatment with cannabinoids may decrease PTSD symptoms, including sleep quality, frequency of nightmares, and hyperarousal,” reported the study. The research identified a preventative role of cannabis in the treatment of PTSD if the plant is administered directly following a trauma. “Cannabinoids administered shortly after exposure to a traumatic event were found to prevent the development of PTSD-like [symptoms],” reported the review. Concluded the researchers, “The end result of the current clinical and preclinical data is that cannabinoid agents may offer therapeutic benefits for PTSD.” A 2014 study entitled “Preliminary, Open-Label, Pilot Study of Add-On Oral Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol in Chronic Post-traumatic Stress Disorder” that was published in the journal Clinical Drug Investigation explored “the tolerance and safety of orally absorbable tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for chronic PTSD.” The study involved “ten outpatients with chronic PTSD on stable medication,” each of whom received 5 mg of THC twice per day. The researchers concluded that THC in the treatment of PTSD provides an acceptable safety profile while simultaneously delivering improvements to symptoms—most notably a reduction in anxiety and better sleep. “The intervention caused a statistically significant improvement in global symptom severity, sleep quality, frequency of nightmares, and PTSD hyperarousal,” concluded the study’s authors. A 2014 study entitled “PTSD Symptom Reports of Patients Evaluated for the New Mexico Medical Cannabis Program” that
was published in the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs investigated 80 psychiatric evaluations of applicants in New Mexico’s medical cannabis program between 2009 and 2011. The researchers noted that use of cannabis produced a significant decrease in the symptoms suffered by patients. “A greater than 75 percent reduction in...symptom scores was reported when patients were using cannabis compared to when they were not,” reported the study. Another 2014 study entitled “Using Cannabis to Help You Sleep: Heightened Frequency of Medical Cannabis Use Among Those with PTSD” that was published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence revealed that PTSD patients are more likely to selfmedicate with cannabis, especially those seeking relief from sleep disorders such as insomnia. “Those with high PTSD scores were more likely to use cannabis to improve sleep and for coping reasons more generally, compared with those with low PTSD scores,” reported the study’s authors. Poor Pierre. Primm? SERIOUSLY? Who in the world lives in Primm? I think I went to a mall there once. Once. While I am dying to know what type of injury you would have acquired while playing the laugh-in-theface-of-death game of Yahtzee, I fear that it would result in me using the rest of this column to make fun of you. Since I have vowed to use my powers for good instead of evil, why don’t we just transition to the topic of CBD. A quick bit of information about me: I generally heap scorn upon much of science. I know that the earth is not flat, despite what certain members of the NBA braintrust seem to think. Modern science’s inability to all get together over this whole Covid thing offers further substantiation of my beliefs. As far as that goes, I get it; this is a pathogen that was fundamentally unknown prior to last January. I mean, if they are having such trouble figuring out this whole “wear a mask” thing, are they really to be trusted with something as serious as mariijuana? I doubt it! I also suffer from some age-related aches and pains. I also use marijuana to try to keep my pain in check. For that reason alone, I gave CBD a three-month try out to see if it would alter my levels of pain. Before I detail my results, I feel obligated to point out that just because something does or does not work for me does not mean that it will or will not work for you. Capisci? Right off the bat, pure CBD does nothing for me. I’ve used tinctures, I have used CBD-only strains of
marijuana, I have even used CBD vape pens. Nothing. Nada. I might as well have smoked the money that I spent on these compounds. However! I did enjoy some pain relief from tinctures and such that are part CBD and part THC. They call this the entourage effect, which is another way of saying that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. What do I mean by that? Well, to return to my earlier mockery of science, these folks recognize THC and CBD, and are slowly waking up to the world of terpenes. I guess that I cannot blame science entirely for their current lack of knowledge, as one needs access to something to learn about it. Would we have learned about lactose sensitivity if cows were illegal? I doubt it. In fact, I don’t even want to ponder a world where cows are illegal. I really like ice cream. As the saying goes, the world is your oyster. Old advice is good advice: start with a small dosage and work your way up from there. As far as styles and formulations, it is always a good idea to consult a budtender at your favorite dispensary. Chances are excellent that you are not the first patient seeking CBD pain relief. I would tell you to tell them that Mary Jane sent you, but you probably have enough issues without constant governmental surveillance. Hopper: I know one of your secrets to growing beautiful, healthy, organic plants is your product, Bokashi Earthworks. Tell our readers what that is and how it works. Brandon: I started Bokashi Earthworks in 2016-17. Unfortunately, I got locked up for 18 months for concentrates. When I got out, I started getting back at it. What Bokashi is, is an inoculated wheat bran that’s fermented with other organic inputs like kelp, alfalfa, and rock minerals. What it does is, it’s fermented by different microorganisms, different species of bacillus bacteria. They work synergistically to release different types of secondary metabolites in the soil, that benefit the soil through nutrient cycling. They help make other minerals and nutrients more bioavailable to the plants. They can also help outcompete pathogens. Hopper: So in layman’s term, it makes for a way healthier plant. Brandon: Well, it makes for a healthier soil

I never thought I’d see a Cali style grow in the Midwest, but I’m out here in Oklahoma City with the homie Brandon Rust, owner of Bokashi Earthworks, and he is bringing West Coast style and skill to the previously anti-cannabis state. in the Sooner State, we’re going to be hearing a lot more about America’s latest Green Rush. I had a great time catching up with Brandon and checking out his facility while we smoked out and chatted about growing, breeding, and the Oklahoma cannabis community. Big things are on the horizon.

It’s increasing the biological diversity of the soil, which essentially is increasing the nutrient cycling capacity of soil, which increases soil and plant health.
Hopper: You gotta tell me about this Death Breath we’re smokin’ on, because I am definitely liking it!
Brandon: So, the Death Breath was something I made, I think in 2016 is when I actually crossed it. I didn’t have a chance to actually test it out then. What I did was, I had the Lime-O-Rilla which was made in 2015. That’s a cross of Aficionado Estates and Mean Gene from Mendocino’s Black Lime Reserve, and it’s crossed into Josey Wales, Ross Johnson’s Gorilla Glue #4 cut. So, it’s actually a S1, F1 generation. What happened was, I took that cut, I searched through it and found a really good one. I found one badass Lime-ORilla cut and I crossed that with a Purple Kush Grape God, and that’s how I have the Death Breath. It’s a really hearty, vigorous plant. It grows fast, it tastes incredible. Hopper: It’s very unique. Brandon: Yeah! The thing is, everybody kinda has a different opinion of what the flavor profile is. Hopper: I think it’s got a little sage-y flavor. Brandon: Yeah, I think it smells like skunk and a little bit of fruit. Some people say it smells like mint, some say it smells like sage. Someone said it smells like Fabuloso. Everyone’s having a hard time trying to determine what this flavor profile is. Hopper: You’re at the top of the grow game,
but that’s not all. Let’s keep talking about genetics and breeding. Tell me about the Lime-O-Rilla.
Brandon: Yeah, it’s the Black Lime Reserve, Gorilla Glue #4 cross. I hunted through several different phenos. The Lime leans two different ways, I took it two different directions. One direction is like a chocolate coffee and gas direction, which is the Chocolate Mocha or the Exotic Joe phenotype. I have one Lime-O-Rilla F2 #2, which is the Exotic Joe cut. It stacks really nice, it’s super greasy and has a chocolate and coffee kind of terpene profile. Then I have the Lime-O-Rilla #31 that I kept from different hunts, I have a #4 and a
#16 right now. The #16 is a really, really vigorous stocky hearty plant. It bushes out and gets really bushy and it stays low which I like. It doesn’t have much of a stretch. It’s got this really floral, soapy, lime terpene profile.
Hopper: What’s the best thing you’ve seen
on the local Oklahoma grow scene since you’ve been here?
Brandon: There’s a really good community here, and I think that people are wanting to build a culture around cannabis because it’s something that was so looked down upon here for a long time. Now that people can be safe and they can express their passion for the plant and how much it helps, there are so many people who are able to base their businesses off of it. It’s a huge, booming industry. It’s making Oklahoma really progressive. Hopper: I haven’t been out here since the old tour days. It’s poppin’ now! How’s the green rush treating you? Do you think it’s going to be a long-lasting, sustainable thing? Brandon: Just like in all markets, in all states, there’s gonna be people who are able to distinguish themselves and be long term players. There’s also gonna be people that try and don’t succeed. That’s just what happens in all business, not just cannabis. I think that the people who understand that cannabis is about community and building relationships, and coming together to destigmatize this plant, are going to succeed. Hopper: The laws seem to be written well. Brandon: Yeah, the laws are written well.
It allows people to really participate. You can get a license for not an exorbitant amount of money, unlike in California.
Hopper: There are big differences between
here, and California. Prop 64 was the death of the weed game in California. Or should I say, the GREED game.
Brandon: Yeah, it wasn’t so much about making things recreational. Recreational was just a clever disguise for more control and higher taxes. I’m hoping that things stay where they’re at now for Oklahoma. Hopper: What are your thoughts on indoor vs outdoor growing? Brandon: Here’s the thing- it’s all farmer dependent in my opinion. Because I understand soil science and the power of the sun, you can grow some of the world’s finest cannabis outdoors. It’s farmer dependent. It has a lot to do, I think, with the health and quality of the soil. You can also replicate that pretty closely indoors. The only difference between good quality indoor and outdoor is that indoor you have the capacity to control the environment 100% and make things consistent the whole way through. Outdoor, you’re never gonna be able to do that. Hopper: Thanks so much for showing me around the facility. You’ve got big things going here and I’m stoked for you! Is there anyone you want to shout out before we wrap it up? Brandon: Shout out to my homeboy who taught me how to grow- Dirty Harry. Hopper: Hell yeah, Harry is the man! Brandon: He created the Afgani Bullrider. He’s gonna be out here too, we’re working on a big project. We have some big things in the works. When you have the knowledge of plant-based remedies, specifically cannabis, it becomes a calling to help others, including their fur babies. In my travels I’ve helped friends and cared for dogs in house-sits, by helping the owners to medicate and/or use cannabis and other plants for their dogs, as prevention against disease and illness. Dogs are biologically the same as humans, and they get the same maladies as we do. Obesity, diabetes, chronic pain, heart disease, and cancer are as common in dogs as they are to humans. As with humans, health starts with our diets in building a strong immune system – and plants address the immune system like no other preventative pharmaceutical or vaccine they can come up with. We definitely are what we eat, and domestic dogs, for the most part, have been relegated to eating the same highly processed, empty foods day in and day out. At best, it’s a boring diet. Worst case scenario, it may add to their demise. I’m also not keen on kibble, likening it to doggy junk food, no matter what the ingredients. For chewing (important for teeth and gum health), dogs can eat raw bones. Raw soup bones are a favorite. But they can devour an entire leg and thigh with bone in no time. Also, important to note, dogs are carnivores and they eat vegetarians, consuming the entire stomach, adding greens and grains to their diets. They do not stop to debone or cook their prey, they eat the meat raw, along with the bones.

As detailed in an article from Natural News processed pet foods contain “meat meal,” cooked down at temperatures between 220 and 270 degrees, allegedly sterilizing the contaminated meat used from a stated plethora of “road kill,” euthanized animals from zoos and animal shelters, and meat classified as “4-D,” or “dead, diseased, disabled and dying.” Ann Martin penned in her book Food Pets Die For that more than five-million tons of processed slaughterhouse leftovers are used for animal feed in the United States each year, with some 200 tons of animals presenting to pet food manufacturers per month in Los Angeles alone - with the sodium phenobarbital residue used from euthanasia still in the mix. Residue from this concoction containing fecal material is dried and pulverized into a brown powder then used as an additive to pet foods and livestock feed – with farmers referring to it as “protein concentrates.”
FOR THE LOVE OF DOGS
Recently I rescued two dogs from a puppy mill. Both were so weak and malnourished, they had to be carried into my home. One was near death with an infection caused by an attack by another dog. Both had mange and severe fur loss, damage from long-term sun exposure. I had cared for enough of my friend’s dogs to know about the importance of making real food for them. I also have enough knowledge of plant-based remedies and cannabis to know how to help them heal. The one with the infection was given olive oil infused with cannabis, a small dose (1 ml every three to four hours initially) to get her used to the activated THC. But she was so sick and weak, there was never any indication she was being negatively affected by the compound, only seeming relief for the pain and discomfort she must have suffered. I used topical cannabis infused salve on the wounds and on both for mange, made with chamomile, guanabana, coconut and shea butter (basic salve recipe on my website). All plants are superfoods, with a wide range of compounds, for a wide range of help for ailments. The mange cleared up within days, with the fur growing back
healthy. Within a week the swelling and infection was on its way out. It’s been nearly two months since they came to me, and both are doing amazingly well. The infection is still healing, but she’s out of the woods and improving daily. Author’s note: I was confident in treating this severe wound and infection with cannabis and other beneficial plants, as just last Fall I treated my own severe wound in the same way. (See

Aside from the power of cannabis and other super plants for infection and healing, the healthy diet alone was a major factor in turning them around and improving their coats. The following is my own recipe, with a list of additional ingredients I add and why:
SHARON’S HOMEMADE DOG FOOD
NOTES ON DOSING:
Oil will be psychoactive. Dosing depends on the size of the dog. Start low, go slow. A negative effect from too much THC will be shaking. This is not affecting the cardiological system, or heart; THC affects the central nervous system. Typically, the dog needs to sleep it off. Giving a chamomile coconut concentrate will take the edge off, and that is why I include it in my animal recipes – it reduces the effect of the THC (see my website under Apothecary for more information on chamomile). Typically, dogs get used to the THC quickly and the dose can be increased slightly on a daily basis for desired effects. Aside from adding it to the dog food, you can also dose the dog with the oil, as I did, using a pipette or dropper. Older dogs with chronic pain respond well to this oil infusion. If they are limping, they are in pain. This is something many dog owners ignore, especially if the dog is still appearing to be active. They can’t tell us how bad they feel, but after dosing their step typically lightens. If given at night, they will sleep better and wake up less stiff from inflammation and pain.
1 pound raw, ground meat 2 cups raw oats 2 cups raw, chopped veggies (or canned/fresh frozen) 1 cup infused oil (see oil infusion recipe, as follows) 2 raw eggs Mix all, store in refrigerator, freeze or use immediately. Serving size depends on the size of dog. Options: I add chia seeds (heart health), papaya w/seeds (digestive health/parasite control), turmeric (superfood, antioxidant/antiinflammatory).

One-liter oil (olive, grapeseed, sunflower…) ¼ cup ground cannabis ¼ cup guanabana leaf ¼ cup chamomile (calming for anxious dogs) I use my Magical Butter machine, but you can put all in a crock-pot and simmer on low for a couple of hours until color changes.

THE OLD MAN LEARNS A NEW TRICK This month is truly awesome! Super excited to do a little collaboration with the team at Rick's Rollin’ Smoke in Las Vegas, NV. Family is so important, and my young cousin Stephen was always telling me, "Uso just go to Rick's Rollin’ Smoke and get me some stickers/ swag, I always wanted to go there." Obviously I totally did that for him. Been there many times now. Especially for the "Ribbed for Her Pleasure Drink", my personal favorite besides another drink staple, "The Old Man." Well guys, today Rick learns a new trick because we are gonna do some Bar-B-Que-shii! Even better, it's got weeeeeed in it! Well, more precisely, hemp which is federally legal through The Farm Bill of 2018. With this being our annual CBD issue, how could I not take this opportunity and run with it like a kid that just jacked you for your bag of candy. This one's for you Uce. This month I created a sushi roll that personally I've never seen done. We have a chopped brisket and pulled pork mix I call "The Big Boss" because the Boss sauce I used with the mix makes it out of this world. Covered in crushed pork rinds and topped with coleslaw, I even added a few dabs of infused sweet potato puree......mmmm dabbbssss. In the middle is a bouquet of brisket flowers with Infused Maui Wowie Sweet Country Girl Mustard sauce. And, I thinly sliced a pork link for a little "extra" love, because love goes a long way. There is an "Oil Decanter" in the picture which was provided by Wes Richards of Fengshwa Glass out of LA. The oil decanter was necessary during the times when the government called glassblowers terrorists. So they had to figure out a new trick. Thanks Wes. Now to make some Soooosh!

INGREDIENTS Pulled pork and chopped brisket from Rick's Rollin’ Smoke RRS sliced brisket (for flowers) RRS pork rinds RRS signature sweet potato RRS beef hot link RRS chipotle coleslaw RRS boss sauce RRS Sweet Country Girl mustard sauce Cannabushi CBD infused apple sugar 500mg CBD infused coconut oil 500mg CannaBushi CBD infused sushi vinegar GVB Biopharma CBD water soluble isolate @99.01% TRUE Terpenes Maui Wowie TRUE Terpenes Grandaddy Purple Short grain sushi rice Japanese seaweed sheets (Nori) MAKING THE SUSHI RICE Start off by washing the rice in a bowl with a strainer. Gently use cold water to rinse or “polish” the rice. The water will turn a cloudy white as the starches are being removed. Continue until the water clears up but try not to wash it too much. Be sure to remove dirty water and drain the rice each time you wash. No more than four times. After draining the rice completely, place it into a rice cooker. Add equal cups of water to each cup of rice. Cook as directed per your device. Take cooked rice and place into a large bowl. Cover and grab your CBD infused CannaBushi vinegar. Take your infused CannaBushi vinegar and place enough to start coating/cutting the rice. Mix well. Be sure not to over do it. While the rice is hot, mix your infused vinegar into the bowl of rice, mixing so that the vinegar is completely covering the rice but not drowning in it. Cover and keep to the side, making sure to mix the rice again in 5 minutes. MAKING THE BRISKET BOUQUET Slice the brisket thin and take three pieces on the board. Roll them up like a flower and place them in the center
of your plate. Drizzle some Maui Wowie Sweet Country Girl mustard sauce over them and add a dollop of infused sweet potato in the center. *TRUE Terpenes Maui Wowie terps. 2 drops of terps into a bowl and mix with the RRS mustard sauce and a tablespoon of CBD infused coconut oil.* **Keep sauce to the side so it can breathe. (Important) MAKING THE ROLL Grab your cutting board, makisu, and knife. Place the nori onto a cutting board and make sure to have a small bowl of water ready so you can handle the rice. Start by dipping your hands in the water and rubbing your hands together so there's a slight amount of water lightly on each. Grab a small ball of rice and spread evenly on the nori. Keeping the rough side up beforehand. Make sure the rice has cooled and has just a slight warmth. It should be a lot stickier now. Be sure to cover all edges of the nori with rice, it should be evenly distributed to a ¼ inch thickness. This should be on a half sheet of nori. Flip riced nori over. Place roughly 3 oz of CBD infused Big Boss Mix in the center of the riced nori sheet. *Big Boss Mix= 50/50 pulled pork and chopped brisket. Add RRS Boss sauce but not too much. Mix some CBD apple sugar (tablespoon) and a dash of Infused Coconut oil.* Mix well and make sure everything homogenizes well. Pull the riced nori sheet to the end of the makisu and use your thumb to grab the makisu. Begin to bring it up and over to encapsulate the ingredients. Make sure you have a seal created and have the seam on the cutting board. Seam facing down. Take your hands and gently squeeze the roll so that it is shaped. Scoot the makisu to each side and gently press the ends so the ingredients are inside the roll. Boomshakalaka!
Take some of those fresh pork rinds and crush them up really well. Into the consistency of what Panko bread crumbs would be. Place the crushed rinds onto a plate or into a long shallow pan. Place the roll into it and begin to fully coat it. Cut into 8 pieces. Grab a plate of your choice and place as seen in the picture. Place a small amount of Chipotle coleslaw onto each piece, making sure to put a “dab” of infused sweet potato puree on each piece via a piping bag with decorative tip. Mmm, dabbss. Take this opportunity to give your plate some flair by placing slices of the hot link to the side of the roll as pictured. Sprinkle some of RRS special rub over everything as well as some scallions for fun. Now, grab yourself a little rocks glass. Place some ice in a shaker and toss in some of that water soluble CBD isolate from the guys at GVB Biopharma, .125g to be exact. Add a couple drops of TRUE Terpenes Grandaddy Purp to the shaker. Taking a special blend of Angels Envy Bourbon that is actually infused at Rick's Rollin’ Smoke BBQ, infused with dried cherries, orange peels, vanilla bean, cinnamon, and brown sugar. (Aged for 30 days minimum in an oak barrel before being served to the public) Trust me, it's fire! Add 2-3oz. to the shaker with some ice. Grab some Benectine and bitters then shake that beast "like a salt shaker". Strain into the glass and finish with some
