CBD-HEMP: Company Spotlights willing to try cannabis to help their children. They have advocated for this since they started in business in 2009…the kids are the most rewarding work they do. Cohen can help guide them through the state process. The effects and changes can be profound and life changing. It’s not about getting kids high, it’s about using medicine to heal them so they can evolve and grow.

Cohen Medical Centers Cohen Medical Centers has been in business for twelve years. The business was established in Colorado in 2009 and then expanded to Nevada in 2015.

Cohen offers whole plant hemp medicine in both CBD and CBG varieties. They have capsules and tinctures as well as a salve, all made with their oils. They also offer smokable hemp flower and all certificates of authenticity are available on their website. You can purchase locally at 3650 S. The birth of the dispensary system in Colorado opened many opportunities for the Cohen Medical team. They needed a business they could grow from the ground up with little money. Very few doctors wanted to help patients. Many felt uncomfortable about recommending cannabis as they knew very little about it…this fact holds true today as well. Robert Cohen teamed up with his father, a retired doctor and his wife Noel to help patients through a complicated state system. They initially started inside a dispensary and soon after, were able to get an office of their own. Cohen Medical is a true family business that guides medical cannabis patients through the state process to become legal patients. They help patients and consumers understand how to use cannabis as medicine. They also developed a whole plant hemp medicine line that they rolled out in 2016 here in Las Vegas. Robert Cohen believes that “the right medicine can and will work…do it right, get the right medicine…whole plant. We have seen so many people be able to lead better lives because of cannabis medicine. Getting off prescription drugs that they have been taking for years. Medication means a measured and consistent dose with breakthrough medicine as needed. I take a whole plant CBD and CBG daily and have seen less pain, and improved physical and mental abilities. I also smoke flower and use medicine topically for breakthrough issues.” He would also like to stress that “Nothing we do is guaranteed to work. We all have unique and different endocannabinoid systems which we must learn and understand how to use…it takes work, but the work is worth it. It’s your responsibility to figure out what works best for you.” One of the challenges Cohen Medical faces within the industry is that so many medicines look the same and just aren’t. According to Cohen, isolates, distillates, broad spectrum and full spectrum are not whole plant. Whole plant means they do not add or remove anything. People are not smarter than the plant. Cohen’s line of hemp medicine is simply hemp and coconut oil. The team at Cohen would like to stress that social media is not where to find medicine. Dispensaries concentrate on and sell THC, not CBD, they have few choices and not always what is best for medicine. The Cohen Medical team has found that more and more parents are

Fruit Slabs CBD

The team at Fruit Slabs is dedicated to providing a healthy, vegan, real fruit edible that feels more like a functional snack than like a candy and that is safe for all consumers, regardless of their diet or dietary restrictions. Brandon Dorsky is the CEO of Fruit Slabs and in the late 90’s and 00’s he worked in music and entertainment, first as a talent buyer and promoter and later as an attorney and artist manager. In 2009, he helped launch the clothing brand Grassroots California and began attending trade shows with the company, including CHAMPS in Vegas and High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, where he began connecting with lots of individuals in the cannabis and cannabis culture accessories industry. Soon after, he started representing his first cannabis industry clients. CBD and THC have multiple benefits for Dorsky. He is deathly allergic to over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medications like Aspirin and Bayer and ibuprofen, so THC and CBD products are much preferred alternatives to no medication at all or unnecessarily strong narcotic level pain medication. In addition to managing pain and inflammation, he also finds CBD to be helpful for dealing with anxiety. According to Dorsky, “THC is great for not only relaxation and mood enhancement, but also for promoting creativity and appetite stimulation.” Dorsky and the team at Fruit Slabs is looking forward to releasing some new flavors later this year and getting their products into more states. They debuted some new flavors at the G4 Live Budtender Awards in Las Vegas in May 2021, gave a peek to attendees at their new sour line, and got some really great feedback on a few flavor ideas. They will be launching their first sour product, Aqua Melon, later this summer and may introduce

the winner of their Vegas taste test, the Peach, before the end of the year. Web: fruitslabs.com and fruitslabscbd.com IG & FB: @fruitslabs and @fruitslabscbd

Happy Hemp Pharm

Happy Hemp Pharm was established in August 2019. However, Daniel Asarch and Todd Ewing took their time coming to market as the hemp scene had just exploded and they wanted to see how the market trended. They spent a lot of time phenotype hunting for their hemp flower as well as looking for potential quality products to source. It wasn’t until July 2020 that they made it to market and launched their very first product, Happy Hemp Pharm Wholeflower Hemp Oil. Happy Hemp Pharm is a boutique style hemp business that prides itself on the quality and care it provides to its customers. The company was started by a pharmacist that believes in the potential medicinal benefits of hemp derived cannabinoids. Since the market has become saturated, Happy Hemp is growing, sourcing, and formulating products that will help the brand stand apart from existing companies. They want their customers to feel better, be happier, and be educated about the products they are using. For Daniel Asarch, seeing documentaries on Charlotte’s Web and the wonders that cannabis was doing for Charlotte Figi spurred an interest in learning more about the medical benefits of cannabis. As a pharmacist, Asarch has dispensed medications for various types of conditions and disorders and they all had one thing in common: side effects. He wanted to be able to dispense a “medicine” that made people feel better without causing side effects that would then need another medication to help with those side effects. The easiest way for him to pursue this potential dream was by entering the hemp industry. The hemp industry was easier and more affordable to participate in. Also, he would be able to send products to all 50 states which allows him and his team to help more people. Todd Ewing, the head cultivator at Happy Hemp had grown cannabis for 18 years and found himself travelling to Vegas in hopes of entering the industry. Through networking, he met Daniel Asarch at a NORML meeting and they discussed helping others by growing hemp. Prior to meeting Asarch, Ewing had gained a dissatisfied feeling about the cannabis industry. His heart and spirit felt most comfortable sharing the properties of this beautiful plant in a healing way, not in a money-making, industry-driven way. When asked about hurdles within the hemp industry, Asarch replied “Besides not being able to attend any live events this past year, we have had a little trouble being able to spread the word about our products online via Instagram and Facebook due to their algorithms. Also, it has been difficult trying to educate people on the differences between CBD and CBDA since all of our products our CBDA dominant. People are still hesitant about trying CBD as they are worried about getting high and not being able to function.

One Love CBD

One Love CBD has been in business for three years. Run by husband and wife team Vincenzo and Mollie Amato, the couple began the business after Vincenzo spiral fractured his right femur in 2006 and turned to CBD instead of the opioids he was prescribed for pain. One Love CBD provides the best in full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD tinctures and topical balms. Their “broad spectrum” CBD is good for you and safe for your pets too, hence the name One Love CBD. When asked about their business practices, Vincenzo replied “We don’t believe in the gimmicks of other CBD companies that try to convince the public you need a “pet” CBD, or you need a “sleep” cbd, you need an “uplifting” CBD. CBD is CBD... it’s the other ingredients that you have to pay attention to. One Love CBD keeps it simple by providing the best CBD with 3rd party test results to back it up along with an epically affordable price point.” Vincenzo feels comfortable knowing that people can now experiment with a safe, non psychoactive product instead of the normal physician prescribed opioids to help manage their issues. After his spiral fracture in 2006, he has continued to use One Love CBD products daily in the 50mg-200mg range depending on what he is doing to manage his chronic pain. His wife Mollie is an RN specializing in the mental health and detox fields of nursing. That experience and an unwavering dedication to expand her knowledge base through classes, community events, and research, makes her an invaluable member of the One Love CBD team. We encourage CBD users to please take the time to review our 3rd party test results and pricing on our website against ANY other brand on the market. For the Amatos, banking has been a nightmare since they have “CBD” in their name. So has “corporate" cannabis. They have come to find it is not about quality products in dispensaries but who has the most money to pay for “shelf” space these days. They are only in Nevada dispensaries that truly care for their customers by giving them the best options in CBD. Currently, One Love offers an array of products that includes 1500mg full

ingredients with premium quality CBD to create a unique, customizable collection of wellness products. Their original three CBD oils are their Focus, Relax, and Sleep tinctures. Each is blended with CBD and natural ingredients to produce the result described by the product name. Their team is made up of people who have two things in common: A passion for CBD and a passion for innovation. TerraVita was born out of years of experimenting with mixing CBD and other natural ingredients. Matoesian has been taking CBD and mixing CBD with other natural ingredients since 2015. He believes it has been the best natural remedy he's come across in his many years working in nutrition and supplements. TerraVita has over 3000 verified 5 star reviews on their website. Customers are experiencing natural relief from anxiety, pain, and more with their products. Matoesian uses the Sleep CBD tincture (CBD + Melatonin and Terpenes) every night. He measures his recovery score on his Whoop band and he consistently averages an 85% recovery which is very good.

Steve’s Goods

Steven Schultheis started Steve's Goods in Colorado back in 2017. The company began as a simple website for purchasing products online, but now they’re a full service white label, and private label company with a three acre farm in Fort Collins, Colorado. They handle custom formulations, and custom orders in their state of the art clean room with updated technologies to bring stevesgoods.com and their wholesalers the best hemp products on the market. When asked why he entered the hemp industry, Schultheis said “to help individuals find safe and easy access to cannabinoids like CBG.” As a hemp company, Steve’s Goods has encountered a few challenges. According to Schultheis, “Recently, a lot of our clients went out of business. We need more clients that want to do consistent long term business with us.”

When asked about challenges within the industry, Matoesian replied “Even though hemp derived CBD was federally legalized in 2018 after the passing of the Farm Bill, the rest of the infrastructure necessary to run a thriving e-commerce business was slow to catch up. We have run into hurdles with merchant processing, banking, and even website hosting. Thankfully, major merchant processors, banks, and web hosting platforms have all realized how powerful CBD is and have opened their arms in accepting CBD brands. Another hurdle we had to overcome was manufacturing. Being the first CBD brand to blend CBD and natural ingredients, it was a challenge to create quality products that were blended properly, tasted amazing, and performed as advertised. Many of the major dietary supplement manufacturers were not touching CBD products but we persisted and have an amazing manufacturer now with GMP certification, NSF certification, and a strict adherence to quality control procedures.”

Their flagship products include CBD Concentrates, CBD Oils, CBD Edibles, and even a CBD Beauty line called EndoBloom which is a skincare line. They are currently working on their Delta 8 and other psychoactive cannabinoids. They are also working on removing 15ml sizes and half gram sizes and adding 4 gram sizes and 4oz sizes for retail bulk. Steve believes all cannabinoids should be legal. Steve’s Goods was the original maker of CBG Oil which is now a mainstay in many other CBD companies lines. Web: stevesgoods.com | IG: @StevesGoodsCo and @StevesGoodsOnline

TerraVita CBD

TerraVita CBD has been in business for just over two years. They are based in Orange County, California and after years of perfecting their formulas, they launched in April 2019. They believe in the benefits of cannabinoids and how, when mixed with other natural ingredients, can create effective, natural treatments for many issues such as stress and anxiety, pain, and lack of focus. TerraVita CBD is the pioneer in creating benefit-specific, functional CBD blends. They combine potent, plant-based

16

If you have a specific ailment such as poor sleep quality, anxiety, or lack of focus, TerraVita has a product for you. Unlike other CBD brands, the team at TerraVita sees CBD as a powerful natural remedy that, when mixed with other ingredients, can create a very potent, effective result. They are a direct-to-consumer CBD brand and the only place you can purchase their products is on their website TerraVitaCBD.com. In addition, customers who take advantage of their “subscribe & save” program can get products shipped to their door monthly for 45% off and free shipping. Matoesian believes that transparency and quality are two important elements when choosing a CBD brand to take. Him and his team pride themselves on an adherence to both. They have a scannable QR code on the package of all their products that bring up the most recent lab tests. They test each batch of their CBD products to show the quality and purity. CHRONICALLY

>>>>> Healing with Dr. Ross The Surprising Ways CBD Products Can Make You Fail a Drug Test

There are many reasons why someone might choose CBD over THC products in a state that has legalized cannabis like Nevada. One might not feel comfortable with the high from THC-containing cannabis and prefer the more subtle anxiety relief from CBD oil. Others might prefer to get their CBD oil products online or in a health store, rather than visiting a cannabis dispensary. The biggest reason why people choose CBD over THC, however, is that they fear failing a drug test over testing positive for THC. Even though cannabis is legal for both medical and adult-use in Nevada, employees who are regularly drug tested and parents fighting for custody of their children in a divorce case are the most likely to opt for CBD instead of THC. In June 2019, Nevada became the first state in the nation to pass a law making it illegal for most employers to refuse to hire someone based on a positive THC result in a preemployment drug test. However, after 30 days of employment this protection goes away, and someone could be fired based on a positive THC test.

20

Is CBD always the safe bet for drug testing?

It depends on the product. CBD topicals are always safe because it is unlikely the minute amounts of THC in full-spectrum products would be absorbed into the bloodstream. CBD isolate and broadspectrum CBD oil gummies and tinctures are the safest bet as they are THC-free, and unlike full-spectrum CBD products, unlikely to ever cause a positive THC drug test. Consumers using full-spectrum CBD oil products that contain less than 0.3% THC can test positive for THC because they have either consumed large amounts of CBD oil, or because the product was mislabeled and contains more THC than is allowed.

In any case, if you are worried about being drug tested and failing for THC, it’s best to avoid CBD vape pens, vaporizing CBD hemp flower, and using full-spectrum CBD oil tinctures, pills, and edibles. Stick to broadspectrum CBD oil and CBD isolate tinctures, pills, and edibles, as well as CBD topicals, and you should be safe. Always talk to a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement or lifestyle change, including CBD or cannabis. Have questions or a topic you’d like me to cover in the next column? Email Dr. Ross at hello@drmicheleross.com.

But what smoking or vaping CBD? Many people assume smoking hemp flower or a CBD vape pen with less than 0.3% THC is safe. A 2021 study published in Scientific Reports found that the CBD in CBD vape pens can actually turn into other cannabinoids depending on how hot it gets.1 Factors that impact how hot a CBD vape cartridge gets include the amount of oil left in the cartridge, the type of coil used, and the voltage setting on the vape pen or vaporizer. How much of the CBD turns into other cannabinoids including delta-9-THC, delta-8-THC, CBN, and CBC? 25-52% of the CBD in CBD vapes is converted into these cannabinoids. This could be enough to fail your drug test, as another study found 33% of people who vaped CBD hemp flower containing just 0.4% THC failed their drug test.2 The higher the temperature, the less delta-9-THC was produced in the CBD vapes, and more of the other cannabinoids were produced. This suggests that if you are wary of CBD converting to THC in your vape, you should have your vape set at the highest temperature setting if possible.

MASTERFUL MUSHROOMS To date, the oldest known fossil is that of a billion-year-old fungus called Tortotubus. The easy to overlook specimen suggests that this fungus may be the earliest landdwelling organism on earth. Along with that, all modern fungi species can be traced back to a single organism. During the time of Tortotubus, only the oceans were full of life whereas the land was completely barren. So Tortotubus most likely paved the way for more complex rooting plants which eventually led to our much more diverse ecosystem. On behalf of all living beings, thank you fungi for making life possible! A fungus is neither a plant nor an animal, yet they are thought to be more closely related to us than plants are. Scientists have estimated that we share about 50% of our DNA with fungi. An important distinction though is that not all fungi are mushroomstrue mushrooms must have a fruiting body and must be large enough to be seen with a naked eye. Mushrooms are considered to be functional foods due to their potent nutritional value. In general, they contain more protein than other vegetables, but not quite as much protein as animal sources. However, humans have the ability to absorb 90% of iron from mushrooms whereas only 15-30% of animal heme iron is absorbable. They also contain all the essential amino acids, including high levels of folic acid which is essential for women and must be supplied by the diet. Mushrooms are also the only non-animal food source of vitamin D, and one study suggested that 40% of Americans are D deficient. Mushrooms contain enough Vitamin D to supply vegans with adequate amounts throughout the winter. Mushrooms have been medicinally prominent for thousands of years, yet like cannabis, they have only started to gain recognition in the U.S. over the last decade or so. Internationally, many species have been thoroughly investigated in the scientific literature for their diverse, dynamic, and symbiotic benefit to life. For humans, mushrooms are an important food source, but they can also be incredible powerhouses when used medicinally. In

alternative medicine, certain mushrooms are categorized as adaptogens, which help the body deal with physical and mental/ emotional stress as well as tuning the immune system. Adaptogens have an affinity with the brain and can be useful for cognitive conditions like anxiety, depression, memory complaints, and cognitive decline. Each species contains unique polysaccharides, which are the main compounds associated with therapeutic effects. Polysaccharides are inherently antioxidative, meaning they have a strong ability to reduce and remove oxidative damage within the body. Based on many years of clinical research, mycologists have determined that specific mushrooms have neuroprotective, antitumor, antiallergenic, hypoglycemic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and antimicrobial properties. Even some of the world's most potent and widely used antibiotics, like penicillin, came from a fungus. This is not entirely surprising since functionally, mushrooms clean up the earth by breaking down forest materials and replenishing the soil.

Important Medicinal Mushrooms Shiitake Shiitake (Lentinus edodes) is the second most popular mushroom but contains more than double the protein of ordinary mushrooms and is rich in phosphorus, iron, vitamins B, D, and C. Oyster Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are very commonly consumed, taking up about 25% of the mushroom market. They are often found along the coasts of the U.S. on dead wood, although China produces 87% of the rather eco-friendly oyster mushroom market. With around 30 species of Pleurotus mushrooms, their color can vary from white, cream, gray, yellow, pink, or light brown with about 40 species. King trumpets (Pleurotus eryngii) are the less common hybridization of the genus but are growing in medicinal recognition. As a functional food due to the dense protein,

By Alixandra Laub

fiber, vitamin, and nutrient content they are considered as an alternative to meat, fish, and vegetables. Beyond our own benefit, oyster mushrooms are strong enough to degrade diesel fuel within the soil, studies are underway to determine if this mushroom could benefit areas affected by oil spills. Chaga Chaga mushrooms (Inonotus obliquus) prefer prime real estate attached directly on birch tree trunks predominantly on the East Coast, but they can also be found on trees in Canada and Alaska. They appear black due to high levels of melanin, however, the interior is pumpkin orange. Gaining momentum in the athletic world, Chaga mushrooms have been shown to reduce fatigue and improve endurance during physical activity in animal trials. Preliminary studies indicated that Chaga may have an antiviral effect, but more research is needed. However, Chaga has been heavily researched both in vivo and in vitro for its apparent antitumor and immunomodulatory effects. Maitake Maitake mushrooms (Grifola frondosa) are another tree-hugging species that produce high levels of beta-glucan, which is an immunostimulant that produces the healthy cells that are known to kill cancer cells. In the United States, Maitakes survive mostly in the temperate regions of the East Coast. Reishi Scientists suggest that Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma spp.) have been used for longevity in Asia for longer than we have been counting years. However, you don’t have to travel across the world to find them, they even grow in the wild attached to dyeing logs and trees in the coastal forests of the United States. This is not really a cooking mushroom, although teas and water-based concoctions are ideal to extract the high levels of betaglucan. In alternative medicine, reishi is used for enhancing the immune system, improving memory complaints, reducing inflammation, stress, and fatigue.

Cordyceps The polysaccharides in Cordyceps mushrooms (Cordyceps sinensis) have been shown to reduce blood glucose levels, regulate metabolism, provide energy by means of amino acids, and balance intestinal microbes. Since cordyceps are also suggested to have an affinity with the bones, improving bone metabolism and strength. Lions Mane Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a neuroprotective antioxidant mushroom that has an affinity with the nervous system. Lion’s mane is commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine for its anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. Research on this mushroom is still in its infancy, however, results from both animal and human trials are showing improved cognitive abilities. Psisibin The psychedelic mushroom deserves an article of its own, but it is worth a mention. In October 2018, the Food and Drug Administration grated psilocybin “breakthrough therapy” status for research. By November 2020, Oregon became the first state to decriminalize psilocybin and also legalize it for therapeutic use, although Denver, CO, Oakland, CA, and Santa Cruz, CA have also decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms. Like Cannabis, the research has begun to take root, which may lead to even more instances of decriminalization. As an herbalist, I would suggest leveling up from vitamins and minerals to integrate enzymes, herbs, and legal mushrooms as well. They are so versatile, easy to cook with, and are (mostly) palatable to consume. As mentioned, the U.S. is finally recognizing the benefits of mushrooms, so products and concoctions containing mushroom blends are on the rise. Adding medicinal mushrooms into your ritual CBD or cannabis routine is an easy way to add benefit. My personal favorite way to consume these medicinal morsels is to mix up a powdered mushroom latte with a dose of cbd oil, a dash of chocolate or cinnamon, and a splash of milk or alternative. A day in the life of Ellen Lenox-Smith, cannabis patient and advocate Treating Ehlers Danlos Syndrome with Cannabis

Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS sleeping, thinking straight, and basically functioning throughout the day,” she added. “I took the advice to try medical marijuana with tremendous trepidation.” Her home state of Rhode Island wasn’t yet legal for cannabis as medicine, let alone recreational use, making sourcing the plant for medicine challenging. Smith said, at the time, you would have to grow your own or source from the illicit market. The fear became twofold when a pulmonologist told her that smoking cannabis may be fatal in conjunction with sarcoidosis. “I was able to find some marijuana, ground it up, heated up some olive oil, and let it release the medicine into the oil,” she explained. “I had no choice but to ingest, since the pulmonologist warned me of smoking.”

Ellen Smith didn’t become a patient until well into her 50s, after suffering a lifetime of pain and discomfort.

That night she mixed one teaspoon of the oil with applesauce one hour before bedtime.

“At the age of 57, I never thought I’d even consider turning to medical marijuana,” she shared. “After 22 surgeries, I visited a pain doctor who, after reviewing my records, saw that I was unresponsive to pain medication. He had no other suggestions but to suggest medical marijuana.”

“I remember feeling scared,” she admitted. “Keep in mind, I was 57, and the only time I ever tried marijuana prior was in college - I had smoked it and remember hating the sensation. I did not want to be out of control of my body like that ever again.”

A DNA drug sensitivity test confirmed she could not metabolize most pharmaceuticals or even the most benign over-the-counter medications, such as aspirin or Tylenol - and specifically stronger pain medication, such as opioids. Smith’s health woes began at birth, diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome, later adding sarcoidosis. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a collection of disorders affecting connective tissues, such as skin, joints, and blood vessel walls. Connective tissues make up proteins and other substances that provide strength and elasticity to the underlying structures in the body. Those affected by the syndrome have a life expectancy of 48 years, with a major health event by the time they are 40. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease affecting organs, with a life expectancy of ten years since diagnosis, or an average death rate of 39 years of age.

28

“I had been living with chronic pain, and it prevented me from

She had warned her husband to keep an eye on her during that first night of ingesting the oil, but after getting into bed, she closed her eyes and before she knew it, it was morning. “I slept through the night - never waking up once!” she shared. “I woke up refreshed, not groggy, and was ready to take on life again. I did not feel any high or stoned sensation like you would guess would happen, and learned quickly that pain does not react the same way to cannabis as someone who uses it for recreational reasons.” Reason being, brain receptors connect with the beneficial compounds of the plant, specifically the terpenes and cannabinoids, providing relief - not an acute head high to the patient as is commonly reported by chronic patients helped with the plant. After that first night of relief she and her husband set out to grow their own, regardless of the illegality of it in their home state. Today, New Hampshire is legal for cannabis as medicine, making her “illegally healed,” no more.

As of this writing Smith is in her 71st year of life - more than thirty years past her predicted life expectancy with the illnesses. She’s become a cannabis advocate and a caregiver as a calling to help others. “My conditions aren’t cured, they are managed by cannabis,” she concluded. “I tell people not to be afraid. Turn your life and your body around and you won’t regret it!” Ellen’s Cannabis Oil 1. 10 T. of ground plant material per 1 c. olive oil 2. Heat olive oil (or oil of choice) to warm, not burn 3. Simmer for about an hour w/out boiling, as too much heat will damage compounds 4. Allow to cool, strain, store in glass container in cool cupboard * Note: Smith also suggests using an infusing appliance, such as the Magical Butter Machine. The Magical Butter Machine can make a maximum batch of one liter of oil, using up to one cup of plant material, taking one hour to cook on a low temperature of 130 degrees fahrenheit, or about 54 degrees celsius. A crock pot can also be used to infuse oils, with a cooking time on low of between three to four hours. Daily Dosing: Start low, go slow. Smith suggests starting with ¼ t. oil an hour before bedtime. It’s easier to add more than to go backwards and have a bad experience. Too much THC too soon is the number one challenge for most patients. Reaching your therapeutic dose without negative side effects is the correct way to get used to the psychoactive compound. To counteract what may be too large a dose, triple-bag a cup of strong chamomile tea to take the edge off and induce sleep. Sleeping off a non-therapeutic dose is the best way to get through it. The THC will affect the central nervous system, not the cardio system, - though it may feel that way. Author’s note: Cannabis also infuses into olive oil without heat. Heat activates the psychoactive effects of THC. To do a coldsteep, add ground plant material to olive oil (I use ¼ c. ground to one liter of oil) Let steep in a cool cupboard, strain and decant. If the container is put in a warm spot, the THC will activate. For more recipes, visit Sharon’s website, www.sharonletts. com/apothecary. Exploring

By: Sarah Jane Woodall aka Wonderhussy

with Sarah Jane

As anyone who’s ever watched a horror movie knows, the desert is alive and seething with creepy crawlers — each more venomous than the last, and all of them out to get you. Rattlesnakes, tarantulas, scorpions, fire ants — if you think about ‘em too much, you’ll never leave the house again. And even in the house, they can still get you. Even where I live, in Las Vegas, people keep blacklights around for the express purpose of spotting scorpions indoors at night. Shudder! As much time as I spend in the outdoors, you’d think I’d have been bitten, stung or otherwise attacked more times than I can count; shockingly, that’s not the case. In all my years of wandering the Nevada outback, I’ve only ever seen a handful of rattlesnakes, and all of them from a safe distance. I’ve also only seen 2 scorpions in the wild, and one of those was squashed flat under a friend’s tarp (which we were all dancing on the night before). I’ve only seen a couple of tarantulas…one of which came lumbering into the frame once when I was working as a nude model, standing naked in an old barn. (Thankfully I was naked except for cowboy boots. That tired-ass trope finally came in handy after all!)

32

That’s right, for many years I was lucky. The aforementioned tally of creepy crawly critters was all I’d ever seen, and I could count them all on two hands. But all of that changed forever one summer day in 2019 when I encountered a

A Veg as-based adventuress exploring weird shit in the desert...and beyond

bug I’d never even heard of, and which turned out to be a thousand times more odious and terrifying than all the tarantulas and scorpions in the Mojave! It all started as my sister and I were heading out to camp at a natural hot spring in themiddle- of-nowhere-Nevada one beautiful July evening. A great, glowing yellow moon rose over the mountains into the gorgeous pink-and-lavender expanse of a high desert twilight, and we were looking forward to a glass of wine while soaking in the hot spring as the first stars came out. We totally had a peaceful, easy feelin’-but as my 4Runner bumped along the dirt road bounded by alfalfa fields, we began to notice the occasional big, black spot. Bugs! And BIG ones! Now, being outdoors women, neither my sis nor I are overly squeamish about bugs. And though the bugs we were spotting were on the large side (maybe 2-3” long) they were fairly infrequent- we’d see one every so often, but they weren’t swarming or anything like that. So we rolled on, neither of us saying anything to the other…but the closer we got to the hot spring, the more of the bugs we saw. And when we finally pulled up at the hot spring and stepped out to take a look around, it was like a scene from a horror movie: they were

everywhere!! Big, fat, black locust-looking things with wings, but they didn’t seem to be able to fly; they just sort of hopped around, congregating most profusely around the open pools of water. What a drag!!! The biggest drag of all was that here we were at this beautiful natural hot spring on an amazing desert evening, and this particular hot spring even had old fiberglass bathtubs installed on little decks, with plumbed taps connected to the hot spring source…but the tubs were full of these damned bugs! I’d estimate there were several hundred of these gruesome crawlies hopping around the sagebrush, tubs and stone foundations of the old resort that had once occupied the site, and it didn’t look like they were going anywhere anytime soon. As frustrating as it was, my sis and I turned to each other and agreed that we had no choice but to abort the mission, and find another place to camp. Neither one of us wanted to spend the night surrounded by this horror show! So, with daylight fading fast, we jumped back in the car, slammed the doors and windows tight, and got the hell out of there back down the dirt road we’d come up, trying to find an uninfested spot for the night. We figured the bugs were probably attracted to the water of the hot springs, so if we could find a dry spot, we’d be OK. But the whole damn desert was

wet with spray from the alfalfa field irrigation…and nowhere was safe! As I hauled ass at the wheel, my sis frantically Googled other campsites in the area, but both places we drove to were similarly swarmed with hideous giant bugs. By now, it was getting pretty dark, and in my mad haste to find shelter for the night, some kind of large bird or something hit my front grille with a sickening THUNK. I had to slow down, give up, and admit defeat: there would be no camping tonight. Cringing at the rusty, shuddering screech borne of long disuse, I creaked open my wallet and booked us a room for the night in nearby Winnemucca…and an hour later, slunk into the lobby feeling like a loser and a quitter. As I signed in, I told the desk clerk what had happened and he said something like, “Oh, yeah, those are Mormon crickets.” Mormon crickets?! I’d lived my entire life surrounded by Mormons, first in California and then in southern Nevada, and I’d never heard of these things! “They come in waves every few years,” the clerk went on. “They eat everything in sight, including each other. They’ll even eat YOU if they get on you!” YIKES!!! Once settled in our room, dismally guzzling the glasses of wine we’d planned on enjoying in the hot spring, we did some more Googling and found that the desk clerk wasn’t kidding. Mormon crickets are a crop-destroying pest whose population flares up every so many years and creates giant swarms, numbering in the tens (if not hundreds) of thousands, wreaking total havoc in their wake. Being unable to fly, they essentially hop or march along, almost in formation, eating every single thing in their paths — be it sagebrush, an alfalfa crop or a slower-moving fellow cricket. Apparently, that’s why they move in creepy, Nazi-like formation — none of them wants to stop moving, for fear of being cannibalized! Technically a katydid and not a cricket, they earned their name by completely destroying the crops of the first Mormon pioneers, almost causing the settlers’ starvation. But according to Mormon lore, a flock of heavenly seagulls finally swooped in and ate the crickets…and thanks to those blessed gulls, we here in the west get to enjoy the company (and Jell-O salad) of Mormons to this day.

Anyway, discovering the existence of Mormon crickets was kind of like learning there’s no Santa Claus: it permanently tainted my perception of summertime- in the Great Basin, at least. Ever since, my summer travels have been strictly planned to AVOID areas where crickets might be present and it’s a real bummer, since those are some of the most beautiful parts of Nevada! But I just don’t want to be part of the carnage. Speaking of carnage, when my sis and I woke up the next morning and went outside to load the car I found that the THUNK I’d heard the previous evening had been a beautiful little owl of some sort. NOOOOOO! I felt really bad about killing that poor, beautiful little owl. Worse, its little head was totally wedged into my grille, and it took both my sister, me and a crowbar to pry it loose. We wrapped the poor little thing in a towel, and gave it a sad and very solemn burial at a nearby ghost town, taking care to decorate its grave with colored rocks and a cross made of sticks. Poor little fella! But as I drove along through the Great Basin the rest of that summer, I spared no such kind thoughts for the dastardly Mormon cricket. I’d have gladly driven over a million of them — but then I guess that would mess up my undercarriage pretty grossly. SHUDDER!

WONDERHUSSY Desert e h t In it h S d Exploring Weir Beyond! and •GHOST TOWNS •HOT SPRINGS •CURIOSITIES

I wasn’t able to confirm the desk clerk’s macabre tidbit about the crickets eating humans, but honestly the more I read online, the more I believed it anyway. Apparently these swarms are still devastating to crops, and almost indestructible — although often, when they march along a paved highway, they do get crushed by cars creating a thick, gooey slick that makes for very dangerous driving conditions. How had I never heard of these things?! It turns out they only really thrive in the sagebrush country of the Great Basin, that’s why. Vegas is too far south, the Great Basin basically starts up around Tonopah, and stretches north into southeastern Oregon and northeastern California, going east as far as western Utah and west to the foothills of the Sierra. So I’ve never really lived anywhere within the breeding area of Mormon crickets. THANK GOODNESS!

>>> MMA & CBD with "The Flea"

W

>>> By Justin Beckelman

hile enjoying my monthly visits to the three new dispensaries in South Lake Tahoe, I came across the MMA training facility Escobar Training Grounds and noticed a picture of my old snowboard friend and current local Fighter/Grappler Cris "Flea" Montenegro on the outside window! I knew if I texted him, I could reconnect, visit, find out how he's doing with his upcoming matches and see if he uses CBD in his training... “Flea! How have you been old buddy? It's been a handful of years since we last snowboarded Sierra At Tahoe together. Sweet cabin, cozy spot! You have remained passionate and driven about Mixed Martial Arts, share with me some photos, let's catch up... Here, try this cbd strain I brought to share!” my recoveries. It's very effective for sore muscles and sleep. JB: What age did you start MMA and what type of training do you do? FLEA: My full name is Cris Montenegro and everyone knows me as Flea. I was raised in Moss Landing, California but have called South Lake Tahoe my home since 2009. I'm 31 years old and I started fighting at age 18. My background is in Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I've also been focusing on Kickboxing and Boxing for the past 3 years at Escobar Training Grounds. JB: I saw a picture of you at the training facility down the street, tell me more about that. FLEA: I first started training with Adrenaline Training Grounds in Carson City, and MMA Gold in the past. Met some really good fighters. I currently train at Escobar Training Grounds here in South Tahoe off Tallac Avenue, we have a great group of professionals. That's my crew, close to home! JB: I know hemp has been growing increasingly popular here at the lake. Do you use any CBD products? FLEA: Yes I do, Tahoe Hemp Company is my local spot for me and got me into trying it. I use gummies, CBD bath bombs, and pain patches. I love the Kind CBD/THC 3:1 ratio tincture and CBD Living products work well! JB: Do you find these products to be effective? FLEA: Yes, they work for me. I don't take pain medication or anything like that so CBD is the perfect substitute for me and

44

JB: How does cannabis or CBD help you fight? FLEA: It helps with my anxiety a lot before a fight, or after a long day training at the gym. Relax and recover mode is important before and after a match. JB: Can you compare snowboarding to MMA fighting? Are there similarities? FLEA: Yes, I'd say there are. Your legs get a good workout! Both are extreme! I first started surfing and that got me into snowboarding. You also learn to take a hit or a "SLAM" and get right back up! JB: What is the largest match you fought in and did you win? FLEA: The biggest match for me was my first fight in 2012 at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. I didn't win, I lost by split decision, but it helped me to become a better fighter. JB: Who are your current sponsors and are you looking for more? FLEA: My current sponsors are Tahoe Hemp Co, Dynamic Designs Screen Printing, SBS Clothing (Stereotyped by Society), House & Garden Nutrients, One Love CBD and Tahoe Cannabis Magazine! Yes, I'm always looking for more sponsorships.

JB: What are some of the current projects you are working on since the pandemic hit and when is your next planned fight? FLEA: I try to keep myself motivated and busy, half of the time I was fixing up my car and learned more about my Subaru. I train with my team at the lake a few days a week and then the rest of the time I'll go hiking or paddle boarding to keep in shape. I'll be fighting here this Summer at Montbleu Resort and also San Jose late July.

WELCOME TO CAPITAL VAPOR MINDEN

JB: Name a goal you plan to reach in the next few years with MMA... FLEA: My goal this year is to win a belt or see if I can go pro with my MMA fighting career in the 125lb flyweight division.

COOKING WITH

CANNABUSHI An Infusion Series

1 Cup of Thinly Sliced Scallions 2 oz. of Flying Fish Roe 1 Avocado 1-2 Carrots 1 Loaf of Flatbread 2 oz. of Toasted Sesame Seeds 1 Spoon of Mustard 1 Ginger Root ⅛ Cup Soy Sauce ¼ Cup Sesame Oil ¼ Cup Japanese Rice Vinegar ¼ Cup Sour Tsunami CBD Strain Infused Coconut Oil DIRECTIONS:

Konichiwa! Welcome back to another recipe all you stoners and stonettes! Make sure to check out my new IGTV videos where I showcase Rokin Vapes newly released E-Straw “The Stinger” which definitely lives up to its name. I was invited by the team at Rokin to stop by the new HQ and I was met with smiling faces. Side note- in the videos check the comments section for a Rokin’ N’ Rollin’ good discount! This month we focus on something perfect for the season among us: Summer. (Or if you are in Vegas, Super Mario 3 where the sun is literally trying to burn you alive!) This month’s recipe is a nice and light salad for this summer swelter we are experiencing. Made fresh with nicely seared tuna, sliced avocados, edamame beans, thinly sliced onions, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, scallions, radish sprouts, flying fish roe, toast points and a beautifully infused ‘Sour Tsunami’ CBD ginger dressing.

Sour Tsunami Summer Salad

52

INGREDIENTS: 12 oz. Tuna Filet 1 Bag of Spring Mix Salad 1 Cucumber 1 Tomato 1 Thinly Sliced Onion 1 Package Radish Sprouts 1 Bag of Edamame Beans

SEARED TUNA First we want to prepare our fresh tuna. Start by grabbing your 12 oz. tuna filet and slightly cover it with a little sesame oil and then sprinkle with pepper. Make sure to have a skillet on medium to medium high (depending on your stove). Quickly sear the outside of your sushi grade tuna and place on the pre-warmed skillet. At this point you should be aware that you do not want to over cook the tuna. When you see that each side is cooked about ⅛ - ¼ inch thick until the entire piece has turned from a beautiful reddish hue to a peppery light tan color on the outside. Remove from heat and immediately place into the fridge. Wrapped in a paper towel and set onto a plate or dish to cool. We will come back to this later. Now is a good time to ‘toast’ your flatbread in the skillet and then cut into small triangles. SOUR TSUNAMI DRESSING Next, we want to take a spoon and use it to ‘shave’ our ginger root. Taking the outside brown skin and removing it to see it’s inner root. Remember that ginger is very potent so add a little at a time to ensure it does not overpower your dressing. I hope you have a good blender or food processor for making your dressing as it will be necessary to create a good dressing. Use a peeler for your carrot while at this point. (Wash your veggies before you start). Cut your carrot into smaller chunks, as well as your ginger and place into the food processor. Add your sesame seeds, sesame oil, infused coconut oil, mustard, soy sauce and rice vinegar. Make sure to blend the ingredients together

>>>>>>> cannabushi.com and then place into a container, then the fridge for future usage. You can use a Magical Butter machine to easily create your Sour Tsunami infused oil. To order your machine, visit www.magicalbutter. com. Use the code ‘CannaBushi’ at checkout for a Magical discount! (PS you can also create the infused dressing with the same machine) BUILDING YOUR SALAD Once you’ve created your seared tuna and your Japanese ginger dressing. We are ready to start building our salad. First we want to slice a tomato and line the bottom of the salad bowl. Make a nice pile of mixed greens over the tomato and create a nice rounded tower. Sprinkle the radish sprouts, thinly sliced scallions, onions, and sliced cucumber over the spring mix. Take your seared tuna out of the fridge and cut on a bias or 45 degree angle. Remove the skin of the avocado and the seed. Slice thin strips of avocado and then place one after another your tuna/avocado (as in picture). Pour your salad dressing into a small cup of your choice and sprinkle the masago over the entire salad. Finally place your toast points onto the rim of your plate. There you have it. We just created a beautiful CBD infused salad perfect for the summer heat! Remember that you can adapt and modify this recipe to place THC into it. Tons of phenomenal products out there so get creative with your food. That way you can medicate yourself properly. Because this is for our own health and wellness! Chef Chris Rodarte aka CannaBushi Chris is a five star Sushi Chef and nventor of the first THC/ CBD infused dessert sushi roll in America. that actually taste amazing and work in collaboration with your own body’s endocannabinoid system to ensure that the medicine gets to where it’s needed. And let’s face it, when your medicine tastes better than your “regular” food, it’s a bonus. It’s about time that patients get to eat great food without sacrificing taste or quality. Misty suffers from an invisible illness, fibromyalgia, and she can tell you first-hand how important edibles (and cannabis in general) can be in helping you to live an “actual life”. Misty is a very strong cannabis advocate and an educator. She has studied every aspect of cannabis for over 30 years including growing, baking, extraction, terpene and cannabinoid profiles. Edibles are Misty’s life, joy, and passion and one of her goals is to tear down the stigmas associated with cannabis and to take back the rights to a plant that has proven its healing abilities for centuries. CBD:

How it works & HOW to find the right productS for you >>> BY TEE "CANNA" MORENO @CANNAPSYCHMD

60

We’re told that CBD can help us in many ways, but what exactly does that mean? We can find a multitude of CBD products from the convenience market down the street to online sponsored ads on our social media accounts. But, how do we know we can trust it? What can we trust? Sourcing reputable, reliable, safe CBD is a topic of everyone’s concern. If we can find it everywhere from the corner store to Health and Wellness shops, does that mean it’s possibly under regulated? Or could it potentially mean that the system that was created isn't working? CBD often comes from overseas without lab testing information (COA: Certificate of Analysis). So, how can we purchase something that we will ingest, without any viable information? When consuming CBD products, you must also understand dosage, as well as knowing what you wish to achieve from it. If you’re taking it orally via tincture, you probably have insomnia or possibly GERD, meaning your endocannabinoid system has an internal need for it. Or, perhaps you over-medicated with an edible, so you need immediate relief. The general recommendation is to start with a low dosage of 0.50ml (half of a dropper/ 1.0ml) at night before bed, as it tends to make you sleepy. After a month or two, you may have to increase the dosage to a full dropper, depending on the level of pain or insomnia you’re experiencing. Due to the fact that our endocannabinoid system builds a tolerance level to the oil. Tinctures are a reliable, fast-acting, alternative for those who are not wanting to inhale smoke in their lungs. Next to edibles,

it is the safest consumption method out there. There is also a level of concern from us scientists when it comes to smoking hemp or cannabis. That inhalation is not the best consumption method for any hemp/cannabis-derived products, as there is some level of toxicity with over-cooked flower (decarboxylation) by way of a lighter or torch. The general recommendation states that the temperature of 220250°F at 45min-1hr is the sweet spot for decarboxylating. The lower the temp, the longer the time. Low and slow is the way to go! This method will retain the terpene and cannabinoid compounds, and ensure you’re getting the most medicinal compounds from the plant. CBD assists with an array of ailments, diseases, and disorders. From anxiety to autism, to neurological disorders and degenerative diseases, the list goes on. CBD has been the preferred treatment for a wide spectrum of non-debilitating/ debilitating health issues, due to its effects and its natural chemical composition. In recent years, we are constantly seeking natural, therapeutic methods for physical and mental health issues. This tells us that we are more interested in non-habit forming, long-term affect plant medicine. The opioid crisis in our country has taken many lives and has in some cases, dismantled households. Both Chemical (involves the use of substance) and Behavioral (compulsive behaviors) addictions have been treated by way of CBD. Showing great efficacy of treatment from the anxiolytic CBD properties that

have minimal adverse side effects. Clinical data provides a strong foundation for CBD as a therapeutic intervention against relapse. Most of the studies that have been conducted have been done on mice, rather than human subjects, as we have federal restrictions in America. In order to run these studies, researchers must be registered and approved by the DEA and FDA. As a cannabis researcher, my focus is on these human studies, to break down each cannabinoid and terpene compound to show their efficacy of treatment to confirm the anecdotal evidence we currently have. Along with new discoveries that typically come up as we dive in. This will take years of dedication and effort, but it needs to be done for the future of medicine. The most important thing when seeking CBD products is to make sure they are coming from a reliable, lab-tested, certified source. Legal brands that are sold in licensed dispensaries are your best bet. Usually, budtenders will have a trustworthy opinion about the brands they sell and will be able to assist you to find the product that suits you best. Let them know your condition (what you’re using CBD for), what consumption method you prefer (oral, inhalation, sublingual, etc.), and what you’re hoping to achieve. That’s the best start! CBD and Your Sex Life >>> BY ALICE LITTLE The benefits of cannabis are wide-ranging, and with the somewhat recent recreational legalization, people are realizing what they were missing out on before. For instance, one of the most overlooked benefits of cannabis is what it can do for you in the bedroom. Even people in states where cannabis is still criminalized can reap the rewards since CBD can make your sex life so much more fun. So, let’s talk about elevating your sex life with CBD. Benefits of CBD The benefits of CBD are still being studied, but its usefulness is so evident that the FDA has approved a prescription CBD drug that helps alleviate seizures. Smaller scale studies have been conducted, too, though, and the findings are optimistic about what CBD can do for you. Some studies suggest that CBD can reduce anxiety, and others show that it may help reduce instances of schizophrenia. In addition, studies conducted on animals have shown that CBD can help relieve inflammation and reduce pain. Further, CBD is a lot easier to use in the bedroom than THC for some people. For one, it’s legal in more states. Next, it isn’t typically addictive, so even those with histories of addiction can benefit from its properties. If you are someone who finds morning to be the best time for getting intimate, you can take CBD without worrying about how it will affect your work performance—or even your commute. You can be mindful, present, and clear-headed during sex with CBD, and it will not disrupt your focus later in the day, either. And you won’t fail a drug test. Of course, THC can make your sex life a lot more interesting, too. But CBD is much more accessible to the general population. Clearly, CBD has healing qualities that can help your body as well as your mind. What’s more is that all of these properties can help heat up your sex life. How CBD Helps With Sexual Dysfunction and Dissatisfaction Nearly everyone wants to have better sex. The number of people suffering from sexual dysfunction is staggering; some estimates suggest that sexual dysfunction affects 43% of women and 31% of men. That means that even if it doesn’t affect you, it probably impacts someone you know. Some of the most common sources of dysfunction are pain during sex and erectile dysfunction. However, a surprising amount of erectile dysfunction isn’t caused by blood flow issues, meaning that taking Viagra won’t help. Oftentimes, ED is caused by anxiety, and so CBD is more effective in those specific situations. Countless women experience pain during sexual intercourse. Unfortunately, it is a common problem that many people don’t end up seeking treatment for because sexual issues are unfortunately stigmatized and considered shameful. However, since CBD has analgesic properties, many people find sex is more comfortable and pleasurable after using some CBD lubricant or a suppository.

CBD and Anxiety Other problems that aren’t necessarily classified as sexual dysfunction can be relieved by CBD, too. For instance, some people have a difficult time getting naked because of poor body image or even social anxiety. People who have severe anxiety may experience difficulty becoming aroused because their minds are focused on all the things that can go wrong rather than how much their partner is turning them on. Even people dealing with everyday work stress who are having trouble disconnecting from the grind and connecting to their partner will find that CBD gives their brain some relief. Basically, anxiety interrupts arousal, and CBD helps you get back on track to focus on your sex life. After all, the best sex isn’t the kind that you have despite your to-do list running through your mind. The best sex happens when you aren’t thinking about anything else at all. Incorporating CBD Into Your Sex Life The way you ingest CBD will partly determine how effective it is for you in the bedroom. Some people expect to see immediate results, but this isn’t typically how it works. If you plan to have a CBD edible, when you feel the effects will depend on what you have eaten that day and how fast your metabolism is. The best course of action is to plan ahead and take the CBD early—at least an hour before you plan to begin sexual activity with your partner. Even topical CBD applications like lubricants don’t work right away. Certainly, they will immediately lubricate any area you spread them on, but the other benefits won’t take effect until later. So, if you are using CBD topically, plan to spend at least twenty minutes engaged in foreplay before you notice anything. Bonus: the extended foreplay will likely boost the heat in the bedroom as well. Using CBD Suppositories CBD suppositories are now readily available, as well. Many can be used vaginally or rectally, and they are incredibly effective at relieving pain during sex. But there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind if you go the suppository route. First, make sure that you get a suppository that is approved for use where you plan to put it, as some cannot be used both vaginally and rectally. Next, consider what you plan to be doing in the bedroom. CBD suppositories are often made with natural oils. Depending on what types of oils they contain, the suppositories may not play well with condoms, other latex barriers, or toys. Remember, if you are taking prescriptions, check with your doctor before including CBD in your sex life. Scientists are still studying whether CBD can hamper the efficacy of some drugs, so it’s best to know that before getting started. Once you get the all-clear, you can start using CBD to amp up your sex life and find out what all the fuss is about.
