DIGIPATH LABS:

Setting the Standard for Nevada Cannabis Labs

D

igipath Labs was founded by Todd Denkin back in 2014. Over the last seven years, we’ve watched Digipath grow and navigate the trials and tribulations of the Nevada cannabis industry. I recently had the chance to sit down with Todd to find out what role a lab plays in this space and how Digipath ensures the success of our local cannabis cultivators and producers. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today. We’ve known each other now for about six years and I don’t think I have ever asked you what you did prior to founding Digipath Labs. TODD DENKIN: Right before founding Digipath, I was working in cannabis cultivation. And prior to that, I was in the hydroponically grown lettuce for urban indoor farms business as well as hydroponically grown cannabis. My background prior to cannabis was as a producer, director, and editor for over 25 years which eventually led to the start of my own production company. Ironically, the relationship I had built with my production company partners ended because they were unhappy with the fact that I was a cannabis consumer. SS: Take us through your start in the cannabis industry and how you ended up founding a lab. TD: I had been in the cannabis space since 2009. At that time, my team and I were looking for the next big trend to invest in. The trend then was “grow your own pot at home.” So, we looked for a hydroponic company to purchase which we found in California. The company, Phototron, was manufacturing single plant, hydroponic grow chambers. We took that company public in 2010 and were one of the first publicly traded cannabis companies. Then we ended up acquiring additional, similar companies like Stealth Grow LEDs and Greners.com and adding them under our Phototron Holdings umbrella. In 2014, when all of the cannabis stocks went crazy due to recreational cannabis passing in Colorado, our stock also shot up. Lots of people made lots of money, and suddenly we were big heroes. At this time, I was living in Vegas and had another company called Ten Mile Farms. We were developing indoor, urban farms and hydroponic controlled environmental growing chambers. We found an investor to fund the company whose focus quickly turned from indoor

urban lettuce farms to cannabis. It was this investor who funded GB Sciences here locally. Under GB Sciences, we developed an array of machinery including a tissue culture box, a grow box, and a cure box. The fourth part of that equation was testing and at that time we didn’t have anyone in the testing space. We then learned that testing labs must be independent from all other cannabis licences so we went to our friends that owned a company called Digipath, which at the time was a digital pathology company. I resigned from GB and became the founder and president of Digipath Inc, and Digipath Labs, Inc. So, as Nevada was going legal with medical marijuana, we partnered with our Digipath friends who already had a publicly traded company (OTCQB:DIGP). We rasied the money easily coming off our success with Phototron and applied for our license in Nevada. We thought it was a perfect marriage as our partners at Digipath already had a decade of laboratory experience. At the end of 2014, we were awarded our lab license. We quickly got to work and opened within six months. Funny enough, we had our final inspection on 4/20 in 2015 and it was then that we knew we were destined for success. We just had our 6 year anniversary and today, we are approximately 70,000 samples in. SS: How has the cannabis landscape changed from the time you obtained your license to now? TD: Well, first we started with medical cannabis. We were regulated by the Department of Health. Then Nevada went recreational and we were regulated by the Department of Taxation. And now, because cannabis is finally considered a “real” industry, they have formed the Cannabis Control Board which is amazing because we now have our own board and we are no longer just a division of some other governmental department. The Cannabis Control Board is working diligently with the various operators of cannabis companies here in Nevada and making decisions to better the industry. In the early days, nobody really knew what to do. It was very much a guessing game. A Lot of what is being done now is being done right. But, there were a lot of bumps in the road from 2014 until now. Another big change that I have seen over the past six or seven years is the public’s acceptance of cannabis. In the beginning locals were a bit apprehensive with Nevada legalizing cannabis and today many see it as no big deal. The industry generates millions of dollars of tax

That’s why we provide the highest level of customer service so when products do fail, we work directly with our customers with R&D testing to help find the root of the problem so they can rectify the situation so that it doesn’t happen again. SS: Take us through the cannabis testing process - what happens after a company calls Digipath to test their products?

revenue. I believe in February the numbers were something like 86 million dollars in revenue that the cannabis industry had made which is astounding. And that is with Nevada just coming out of a pandemic without the typical amount of tourists here. The Feds made cannabis “essential” and Nevadans stepped it up. SS: What is the role of a testing lab within the cannabis industry? TD: Labs play a very important role in cannabis. Labs assist cultivators and producers in achieving their goals while protecting consumers who oftentimes are using cannabis as medicine. Also, we pride ourselves on educating budtenders, patients and whomever wants to learn more about this incredible plant. Good education creates good legislation and helps everyone understand the good and bad things about cannabis. SS: What is a common misconception about cannabis labs? TD: A common misconception that people have is that cannabis labs have the ability to pass or fail samples whenever they want. The truth is we don’t want anyone to fail a test as it has devastating consequences to the bottom line of our customers. The worst call we can make is to tell someone their batch or lot has failed. By failing a product for whatever reason, a lab gains absolutely nothing. We don’t get points from the state and we don’t win any awards. Cultivators and producers pay for the services provided by labs and we have to deliver accurate results. Failing a cannabis product is only to provide protection to consumers. Customer retention is VERY important to us and, when products fail testing, labs run the risk of those customers bouncing around and “trying” other labs.

TD: Once we receive a call or a customer logs into their Confident Cannabis account to request our services, we schedule an appointment for one of our Digipath technicians to visit the facility. Technicians are outfitted in hazmat suits with gloves and masks. When the technician arrives at the cultivation or production facility, they choose random samples in the specified amounts for testing. Edibles are also taken at random in order to test the homogeneity to ensure that all edibles in a batch have consistent ingredients and cannabinoid percentages. Samples are transported within the temperature controlled locked container back to the lab and delivered to the intake room. The intake technician then logs everything into the system which provides each sample with a barcode for tracking throughout the testing process. Once entered into the system, photographs of each sample are taken. The first step in the actual testing process is a visual inspection of the sample to ensure there are no hairs, bugs

or other particles on it. In addition, we always look for powdery mildew which in Nevada is not a standard test but it is definitely something we look for on our client’s behalf. After the visual inspection, we homogenize the sample and aliquot it out and it is prepped by analytical chemists for the different tests. Tests usually run overnight and when the analysts come in each morning, they check the data, evaluate it and record it. The Certificate of Analysis is then issued and forwarded to the client. Here at Digipath, customer communication is the key to our success so we also call our clients and review the certificate to see if they have any questions and give guidance as needed. SS: What types of things do you test for? And, what types of things do most sample fails stem from? TD: We test for moisture, water activity, heavy metals, pesticides and we also do a complete microbial screen covering e.coli, salmonella, mold and yeast, 4 species of aspergillus and total aerobic bacteria for edibles. And, of course we test for cannabinoids and terpenes. Our team consists of both analytical chemists and microbiologists that perform the various tests. What sets our lab apart is that we have redundancy in our lab. We have two of almost every piece of testing instrumentation. This also increases our capacity and allows us to return results in only 3 business days. Most sample fails come in the microbiology department. I would say around 95% of fails come from microbiology. Approximately 1% are from pesticides. another 3% come from solvents and then less than 1% other. It is also

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014 very rare for a sample to fail for heavy metals and we’ve only seen a handful in 6 years. SS: What improvements for labs do you believe the industry needs? TD: The main improvement needed is lab standardization. Requiring that all labs utilize similar processes and equipment is necessary in this industry. This would level the playing field so to speak and allow all labs to test products identically and give cultivators and producers confidence that each lab is testing properly and accurately. We encouraged lab standardization in the early days, but it was just too difficult to change legislation. Now, with the Cannabis Control Board overseeing the industry, it may be a bit easier. And, in the future, as cannabis becomes more mainstream, standardization will become critical not only within Nevada but across the United States as well as internationally. Another improvement that could be made is for the labs within the Nevada cannabis industry to cooperate with one another. Cooperation

14

and working towards common goals will ultimately assist in the success of this industry as a whole. If we work together a little more, which we are seeing happening right now, we will all benefit. Don’t get me wrong, we work with several of the labs in Las Vegas and Reno and companies in the cannabis space are starting to realize that we need each other and that the animosity and negativity can be quite detrimental to everyone.

there is no real regulation or standardization in the nomenclature of cannabis cultivars, the only way to know for sure what you are getting is by looking at the COA.

SS: From a lab perspective, what advice would you give to consumers when shopping for cannabis?

TD: For more information about Digipath, Inc. visit digipath.com or you can learn more about our Nevada Lab at digipathlabs.com. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook @ digipathlabs and just a reminder that you can check out our stock at: OTCQB:DIGP.

TD: Research the various terpenes and cannabinoids and then ask your budtender for lab results (or a Certificate of Analysis) so that you can determine which strains will be beneficial to you. If you purchase a strain and then end up really liking it, note the terpene and cannabinoid profiles, also known as the chemoprofile so that when you return to the dispensary, you can find something with a similar profile. Not all Blue Dreams are the same, just like not all OG Kush’s are not the same. Since

SS: Thank you for taking the time to explain the lab process and for giving our readers some tips on choosing cannabis for themselves. How can our readers find out more about Digipath Labs?

CHRONICALLY

>>> Healing with Dr. Ross Why Everyone Needs a Daily Dose of Vitamin Weed or vaping it, cannabis was also eaten as a food or consumed as tea for centuries. Livestock even ate hemp as animal feed, and their meat was enriched in cannabinoids like CBD and eaten by humans. Cannabinoids used to be part of the human diet before prohibition happened in the United States and many parts of the Western world, banning hemp from animal feed and scheduling cannabis as an illegal drug with no medical benefit.

ou might have heard phrases like Vitamin CBD or Vitamin Weed. But does your body actually make CBD or THC? The answer is no. CBD and THC are two phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The prefix “phyto” means they come from plants, not humans or other animals. Your body makes endocannabinoids like anandamide, 2-AG, and PEA. The prefix “endo” means that they are made inside your body. While CBD and THC aren’t made in the body, that doesn’t mean they aren’t essential vitamins for wellness. In fact, only vitamin D and vitamin K are produced within the body, while vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin E are all derived from foods we eat. Food is medicine, and cannabis is no different. While the most popular way to consume cannabis today is by smoking

22

Due to stress, sleep deprivation, unhealthy diet, and environmental toxins, the majority of Americans are endocannabinoid deficient. That means they need to supplement themselves with phytocannabinoids like CBD and THC to restore balance to their endocannabinoid system, the largest neurotransmitter system in your body. Think of it like any other vitamin deficiency that needs support. CBD increases levels of our endocannabinoid anandamide, the “bliss molecule,” while THC directly activates CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors throughout our brain and body. There are different reasons why someone might use CBD versus THC, including avoiding potential drug interactions, need for stronger anxiety or pain relief, or personal preference. For the purposes of this article, we’re going to focus on using CBD as a daily vitamin for wellness, but microdosing THC at a dose between 1.5-5 mg can provide health benefits of “Vitamin Weed” as well. When you take a vitamin D pill, you might not feel the effects right away. It may even take a couple of days for the vitamin to build

up in your bloodstream. Similarly, some people are concerned that they might not feel the effects of CBD right away. But that doesn’t mean the CBD is not working, unless you purchased a poor-quality product with little actual CBD in it (do your homework on a brand before purchasing)! CBD is working as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, helping protect your brain cells, heart, and other organs from free radical damage. CBD has numerous activities in the body at a cellular level beyond just increasing anandamide. It can activate a subtype of serotonin receptors, called 5-HT1A that help reduce anxiety, pain, nausea, and sleep issues. It can block GPR55, a receptor that can fuel cancer cell growth. CBD can activate TRPV1, a receptor that modulates pain, inflammation, and temperature, and may underlie health conditions like fibromyalgia. Beyond the receptor level, CBD can turn on hundreds of genes that are anti-cancer and turn off hundreds of genes that promote cancer. We are really at the tip of the iceberg for understanding how this amazing molecule works to promote both short-term changes and long-term health. While many people are adamant about using only plants over pills, I argue that CBD or cannabis can be used as either alternative medicine or complementary medicine. In fact, in many cases where a medication or treatment is working for a patient, with minimal side effects, it doesn’t make sense to discontinue it for cannabis or CBD. Instead, cannabinoids can boost the overall health, mood, and quality of life for a patient instead of acting as the primary treatment. Consuming Vitamin Weed, whether as CBD oil or microdosing

A GROWING Science

Cannabis is one of the world’s oldest cultivated plants, yet modern-day science is still expanding on the best production practices. Cannabis is a highly adaptable weed-like species that can be grown pretty much anywhere. It can thrive in wet tropical climates, temperate mountainous terrain, but also in controlled conditions such as greenhouses and sophisticated indoor facilities. Whether it is an indoor or an outdoor grow depends on the purpose and the end product. For example, is cannabis being grown for fiber, hemp seed oil, or flower? It is more cost-effective to grow fiber, hemp, and CBD chemotypes outdoors whereas flowers and concentrates are considered higher quality when grown indoors. In addition, growers have their own techniques that were predominantly learned through observation or taught by mentors. Throughout cultivation literature many basic controls remain the same, but there will always be differences of opinion when it comes to the ideal technique. This is mostly because there is no cannabis cultivation playbook. Sure there are self-proclaimed grow bibles, how-to novels, reference books, and the like, but again most of this information is based upon observation rather than scientific confirmation. The reason we have the technology and not the research is due to prohibition efforts which halted scientific progression. However, now that we are here, what does the most current laboratory science say about optimal conditions?

Clones

In large-scale hemp productions, the plant is typically cultivated outdoors from seeds using mechanical processes similar to growing grain crops. On the other hand, cannabis for ingestion is often grown indoors and propagated into clones via stem cuttings from the healthiest plants, a.k.a. the mother. There are many benefits to this method: propagation is easy, the cuttings mature quicker, they maintain the mother’s elite genetics, the clones offer greater consistency and uniformity, and they deliver clear indications of plant genetics. The downsides are that cloning requires much more space, money, and time than even mechanized seed

26

cultivation enjoyed by the hemp industry. Furthermore, mother plants are susceptible to pathogens, insects, or diseases that can be passed onto these sweet baby clippings. To combat these downfalls, it is now being suggested that in vitro propagation, a.k.a. tissue culture is expected to take over this original way of repopulating the garden after a harvest. Growing plants from tissue cultures is quicker than cloning, large numbers can be done at once, with less labor, and taking up far less space. Due to the sterile nature of in vitro propagation, the process sprouts healthy clones (free of pathogens, insects, etc.) which reduces the chances of infecting a garden or having to integrate socially unacceptable pesticides or chemicals. In addition to these lovely benefits, tissue culture propagation is much more cost-effective than cloning. It is more cost-effective for both psychoactive cannabis production and hemp production. Growing plants in vitro is not a new thing, it has been conducted for many years on a variety of mass-produced plants. This process is probably left out of the public conversation on purpose because if anybody could do this, even with vegetables, then how would corporations like Monsanto make any money? Anyway, this propagation approach is relatively new for cannabis, so currently there is a lack of protocols to follow to maximize the plant’s needs. To complicate things further, cannabis has such diverse genotype responses that it can make finding homeostasis tricky, though by no means impossible. The research is happening, so soon this will be a perfected technique that enables more efficient large-scale micropropagation, genetic preservation, and the development of new plant breeding technologies. Once developed, an effective system will need to be flexible with the age and condition of plant tissues, as well as the ability to acclimate and accommodate different lab environments.

Light

In the laboratory, there are a few things that are certain, such as a reduction in day length from 18 to 12 hours per day induces

By Alixandra Laub

flowering, and maintenance of this regimen for approximately 8 weeks will produce a floral crop. Researchers found that when grown indoors, the light intensity from 400 watts per square meter (W m−2), to 600 W m−2, produced a higher yield per plant across several chemotypes a.k.a. strains. In addition, a reduction in plant density from the normal 20 to 16 plants per m−2 has been shown to increase the flower yield due to increased light access to the canopy below. In other words, less is more. The use of different artificial lighting systems in controlled environment greenhouse applications also affects flower yield, but there are trade-offs when using lightemitting diodes (LED) versus high-intensity discharge (HID) lights.

Nutrients

Cannabis is reactive to nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) supplementation known as NPK, and humic acid. In the lab, they found that the application of NPK reduced the THC, CBN, and CBD content, but increased CBG content in the flower. Humic acid was found to significantly lower the THC, CBD, CBG, THCV, CBC, CBL, and CBT content. Supplementing with N increased hemp seed yield, plant height, and chlorophyll content, yet decreased the fiber yield. Applying gibberellic acid (GA) to flowering plants with established resinous trichomes reduced chlorophyll levels, terpene levels, and THC content. Adding abscisic acid (ABA) at the vegetative stage increased chlorophyll content, but reduced THC and CBD content, whereas ABA applied at the flowering stage decreased chlorophyll, and increased the THC potency in the flower.

Stem length

When growing cannabis for fiber, the key to a high yield is to produce long stems. This is done by having rich nitrogen content and a dense plant. The opposite is true when cannabis is grown for its cannabinoids. Short stems produce shorter plants which correlates to greater light and resource uptake into reproductive tissues leading to increased swelling of the flowers and cannabinoids as well as increased terpene content within.

Researchers around the globe are figuring out the scientific process behind the growth of cannabis. As more details are uncovered, the cannabis world sees rapid changes in cultivation procedures with a great understanding of the molecular and physiological intelligence of cannabis. In the future, I believe we will be able to apply exact growing conditions to either enhance or reduce specific terpenes (as we do with CBD and THC). Any new research is a major win for the industry, healthcare, natural wellness, and the end user alike. The more that is known about this magnificent plant, the more effective and efficient we can be with our best buds. Legal Spotlight

BY STEPHANIE SHEHAN

Flynn Giudici Law Firm Shamus Flynn and Daniel Giudici, partners of Flynn Giudici Law Firm, are Nevada business lawyers specializing in cannabis law. Their deep understanding of cannabis laws, rules, and regulations allows them to provide licensing assistance, SHAMUS compliance advice, regulatory support, FLYNN tax consulting, and more. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with them to discuss their practice and the work they are doing within the cannabis space. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Where in Nevada are you guys based? DANIEL GIUDICI: We are based in Reno, Nevada but we serve clients throughout Nevada. Shamus is also licensed to practice in California. SS: What is your specialty? DG: We are a full-service business law firm that helps entrepreneurs, businesses, and individuals navigate corporate, regulatory, administrative, and tax law. We also handle business litigation matters. A significant portion of our work consists of assisting and counseling cannabis clients. SS: Tell us about your team. DG: Flynn Giudici is a team built with unique, varied backgrounds in both the public and private sectors. Our lawyers’ blend of cannabis, business, administrative, and tax law experience equips us with the tools to help businesses thrive. Prior to cofounding Flynn Giudici, Shamus served as an attorney at Baker Botts- a leading global law firm. While there, his practice focused on complex regulatory matters involving environmental, energy, land use, mining, infrastructure development, sensitive business concerns, and appeals. Drawing on his experience

30

DANIEL GIUDICI

as a former judicial law clerk to the Honorable Johnnie B. Rawlinson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Shamus has a deep understanding of the federal courts and administrative and appellate law. By leveraging his litigation and transactional experience, Shamus helps clients navigate complex regulatory and commercial concerns; employment disputes; environmental, land use, and energy matters; general tax issues and controversies; and appeals. As a notable lawyer in the emerging cannabis industry, clients turn to Shamus as a trusted advisor to assist in acquiring and transferring licenses, drafting and negotiating contracts and agreements, and navigating the dizzying cannabis compliance rules and regulations. And given his tax background, Shamus boasts an acute understanding of section 280E and the challenges associated with it. I have a unique blend of experience from both the public and private sectors. I have worked in multiple arenas, from the Capitol in Washington D.C. to flower rooms in Nevada cannabis operations. I also counsel businesses and entrepreneurs, helping guide them from entry-to-exit, whether it be starting a business, dealing with regulators, selling a company, and anything in between. As a trusted cannabis advisor, I possess vast administrative and operational experience in all legal cannabis operations. As a thought leader in the cannabis industry, I routinely publish

articles analyzing important cannabis-related issues, especially those that touch on tax concerns such as section 280E. My experience and unique skill set also extend to administrative law, startup and business matters, construction, and estate planning. SS: Why cannabis law? And, what does that type of law consist of? DG: It's a new and developing industry with complex rules and regulations. The industry is lacking professionals that are familiar with cannabis and the needs of cannabis businesses. The law is multifaceted and serves as an intersection to criminal, business, and administrative law. SS: What services do you offer cannabis businesses? DG: We are a full-service cannabis law firm. Our tailored cannabis service include: Compliance Advice, Licensing Assistance, Transaction Services, Regulatory Support, Tax Consulting, and Litigation/Dispute Resolution. SS: What are the biggest legal issues facing cannabis businesses right now? DG: The biggest issues are access to capital, and not being able to take typical business expenses under section 280E. SS: What laws would you like to see changed? DG: Not surprisingly, removing cannabis from the DEA’s controlled substance Schedule 1 would be a game changer. With the Biden administration starting to gain its sea legs, coupled with a new attorney general in place and the fact that it appears there is at least some appetite in congress to legalize cannabis at the federal level, the next 12-18 months will be incredibly interesting to observe. SS: What advice would you give to cannabis businesses seeking a business attorney? DG: Given the stringent regulations that govern the cannabis industry, it’s critical that cannabis businesses and operators retain a lawyer that has a background not only in business and cannabis law, but in regulatory and administrative law more broadly. At its core, cannabis law—much like gaming law— is a creature of administrative law. What’s more, cannabis law, unsurprisingly, has significant overlap with government affairs and politics, so finding an attorney that can deftly navigate business and administrative law and can grasp the political dynamics at play is massive. DIY: Making fresh beneficial bath sachets from the garden

Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS Hot water infusions are the oldest infusions on the planet. The healing compounds of herbal plants are found in the essential oils of the plant, those that make up the scent and flavor. These essential oils easily come off the plant quickly in hot water. Plants have fragrance because we have a nose. It’s a symbiotic relationship we have to plants. Especially those plants that can heal us, as they draw us to them. Tea can be made of many types of plant materials- bark, flower, fruit, aside from the leaves, are used. Combinations of plants for effect is key. You just need to know what benefits come from each plant. Surprisingly, many of these beneficial plants have the same benefits, with treating inflammation and infection at the top of the benefit list.

History of Aromatic Extracts Apothecary, not pharmacology, was the norm using plants as remedy prior to the 1940s and the creation of synthetic patents and the pharmaceutical industry. But the creation of tea using plants dates back as far as 2737 BC, when then Chinese Emperor Shen Nung was sitting beneath a tree while his servant boiled drinking water, and some leaves from the tree blew into the water. The Chinese and Indian (India) use of essential oils dates back between 3000 and 2000 BC., but evidence and recorded history show that Greece, Rome, Persia and parts of Europe also extracted

32

beneficial compounds from plants for various uses, including personal, spiritual, and medicinal. According to a paper published in the National Institute of Health, using essential oils on our skin dates back as far as 4500 BC, with credit given to Egyptians, as the first culture to use aromatic extracts for ointments for health and beauty care, and culinary uses; as well as for spiritual and physical well-being.

Tea Bath Getting the essential oils from plants is as easy as making a cup of tea. So, it stands to say that making a bath of essential oil tea would be equally as beneficial to our skin for a good soak. My garden is small, but filled with beneficial plants, such as calendula, rosemary, lavender, mint, and mallow. From time to time I’ll have one or two cannabis plants growing, or will receive fan leaves from a friend. Using just these from my garden, below is a breakdown of each plant’s benefits in a tea bath: Calendula: inflammation, treating wounds/infections/burns. It’s also said to tighten and give more supple skin. It’s also an antioxidant.

Rosemary: inflammation, antioxidant, and anti-infection. Rosemary is also said to boost alertness, intelligence, and focus, when ingested. Lavender: Treats skin blemishes, pain, reduces blood pressure and heart rate - calming. Reduces asthma symptoms, anti-fungal, promotes hair growth. Mallow: anti-inflammatory, anti-infection, pain relief, treats skin sores/burns. When ingested, mallow treats digestive issues, sleep problems, respiratory illnesses/bronchitis. Cannabis: anti-inflammatory, anti-infection, pain relief, treats skin sores/burns.

Garden Fresh Bath Sachets 1. Handful each of fresh flowers, leaves, and stems from the garden 2. Put all in a nut bag or fine mesh bag 3. Put in bathtub as it fills 4. Plants’ essential oils will come off into the hot or warm water, giving you a soothing, healing soak, and soft skin For more recipes from Sharon visit, www.sharonletts.com/ apothecary. Exploring

By: Sarah Jane Woodall aka Wonderhussy

with Sarah Jane

Say what you will about the pandemic — at least it was nice being able to take the freeway whenever you wanted, or to blaze right down Las Vegas Boulevard anytime, day or night, without having to take tourist travel patterns into account! I personally got so spoiled by the empty streets that I found myself peevishly cursing last week at the indignity of having to sit through two light cycles to cross the Strip at Sahara. THE NERVE! Seriously though, I understand that ours is a tourism-based economy, and these traffic jams equate directly to dollars in the pockets of those in the service industry who suffered mightily during the shutdown. So in all fairness, I can’t be too salty about it.

But I can get the hell out of Dodge!

36

Thankfully, here in Nevada we have no shortage of lightly-traveled roads (to put it politely). Since most of the state between Reno and Vegas is considered “the middle of nowhere,” it’s pretty easy to find an empty stretch of open road anywhere outside those two metro areas. I mean, sure, you’ll have to tap the brakes from time to time in Elko or Tonopah — but I’d rather spend a few minutes waiting for some giant piece of mining machinery to cross the road than be stuck in

A Veg as-based adventuress exploring weird shit in the desert...and beyond

seething gridlock staring at the ass end of a taxi advertising some artsy-fartsy FrenchCanadian circus. Ya feel me?! Mining machinery and the occasional roadwork notwithstanding, most of Nevada is so desolate and sparsely populated that most of the roads are almost always wide open. And don’t think we take it for granted! American culture has long fetishized the concept of the open road. But here in Nevada, we take it to a whole other level-and in true Silver State fashion, we even figured out how to make a buck off our lonely roads. Back in July 1986, Life magazine dubbed the part of U.S. Highway 50 that crosses Nevada “the Loneliest Road in America.” This was meant to be a diss, as the article went on to warn that only experienced and well-equipped desert travelers should attempt to cross this Big Mac-and bathroom-free stretch of road. The 409-mile span between Delta, Utah and Fallon, NV passes through only three small towns (Ely, Eureka and Austin), and even today, gas stations are only to be found at an average of 65-mile intervals. But wouldn’t you know it? Scrappy underdog Nevada owned the diss — going so far as to rename the entire stretch of highway in

question “The Loneliest Road in America,” complete with redesigned highway signs, branded merchandise and souvenir passports which intrepid travelers can get stamped at the various sparsely-distanced businesses along the route. Next thing you know, The Loneliest Road became a tourist destination in and of itself. Take that, big city elitists! Wanting some peace and quiet last summer, I decided to check it out for myself, and made a series of videos for my YouTube channel traveling the length of the Loneliest Road, all the way from Carson City to Delta, Utah. I enjoyed huge skies, spectacular scenery and plenty of history — and it really was pretty desolate at times. Thanks to many miles of visibility, I was able to shoot drone footage of my car cruising along, and even to walk down the middle of the road blabbing to my camera for many minutes at a time, without any fear of oncoming traffic— and I even gave myself a little thrill by pretending to be in Merry Olde England and drive on the left side of the highway for a bit until I just got too freaked out and returned to my lane. So yeah, it was pretty lonely — in parts. The irony was (thanks to Covid) most of it

really wasn’t all that lonely. Anyone who spent any amount of time camping anywhere last summer knows what I’m talking about: there were stir-crazy city folk everywhere…even on the “loneliest” road — which, incidentally, in my experience wasn’t in Nevada at all, but rather in Utah! Utah is totally missing the boat on tourist dollars, in my opinion; the stretch of U.S. 50 between Baker, NV and Delta, UT is hands-down the most desolate and weirdly fascinating part of the highway. They should definitely milk it more! But as for Nevada, the crowds of travelers I faced proved that the marketing shtick was working, so good for them. But for those of us who want to be on a REALLY lonely road — we know where to go. And it ain’t Hwy 50! My personal favorite lonely highway is U.S. Highway 6, the Nevada portion of which is far more desolate than U.S. 50. There’s no cute little passport or quirky road signs — and that’s how you know this is the real deal! From its beginning in Bishop, CA, the only town you’ll pass through heading east on 6 is Tonopah, before facing an epic 170-mile gasstation-less stretch to Ely. Cell signal is mostly nonexistent, even with Verizon, so you’d better have a full tank of gas, four good tires and a strong sense of self if you plan on venturing out here. There’s no one to jumpstart your battery, no one to make you a Frappuccino, and no one to hear you scream. In other words…

Paradise! I’d go so far as to say that the section of U.S. 6 between Tonopah and Ely is my personal Disneyland — that is, if Disneyland lacked all services and amenities aside from abandoned buildings, mutilated cows and fallout-dusted sagebrush and was totally devoid of screaming toddlers and harried parents. And, for that matter, Covid refugees, after my U.S. 50 trip last summer I also drove U.S. 6. It was only then that I found the desolation I was looking for. Sign me up for an annual pass!

Like a flash flood, or lightning strikes, Wild Bill is unpredictable. So I wasn’t expecting him when he rolled up around midnight. I was half asleep when I walked out to meet him. “You want to hit this,” he asked as he handed me a Stix preroll by Verano. At first I said no, but that’s because I was half asleep. My hand took control and said, “YES” and reached out for the 1 gram joint of hand trimmed G-Purps colas. When I say colas, I mean the premium tops all testing at 19% THC and 20% THCa which means once that acid is burned off, you have even more THC. Needless to say, after a couple of hits, I was headed back to bed. I woke up thinking it was all a dream, until I saw the rest of the Verano that Wild Bill gave me, sitting in my ashtray. In January of 2016, Nevada legalized recreational cannabis products, and set new, lower limits of THC content to 100mg for recreational use. Most companies halted production of heavier doses of THC, leaving patients with very few options within dispensaries. Most people don't acknowledge that they are medicating when lighting a joint, vaporizing, applying a pain cream, or consuming an edible, because they purchased their product recreationally. Most people don't believe cannabis really is medicine, or they forget that just a few years ago, Nevada legalized consumption for medical use only. There's one company that didn't forget about the needs of Nevada Patients, Evergreen Organix, who continues to produce 500mg THC edibles for MEDICAL USE ONLY. I am familiar with their 500mg Chocolate Bar, but finally a potent Gummy Candy. Sour Watermelon Gummies have quickly become the most requested edible in Nevada. It's no surprise either since they are sweet and tangy, offer long-lasting pain relief, and help patients get the relaxation they deserve.

ZEUS ICEBORN V2

The Iceborn is a revolutionary must-have vaporizer accessory. ZEUS solves the vaporizing dilemma by using ice to dramatically cool down vapor, adding extra points to the vapor quality score of any vaporizer you choose. All other previous attempts to cool vapor and eliminate coughing & throat irritation caused by hot vapor have been with water filtration systems. Water filtration is inferior to ice filtration for 3 reasons - essential oils are lost in the water, making them inefficient, the clouds are less dense, and they are messy, fragile and high maintenance. Another bonus? Vapor cooled through the ZEUS Iceborn is virtually odorless. Check the TVape website to find out if this device is compatible with your vaporizer.

COOKING WITH

CANNABUSHI An Infusion Series

CBD 'Booshi' Bears

I hope you enjoyed the "Getting To Know Chris" article in the last issue. I mentioned a new sushi roll made from roses (Flower Power) and I can't wait to share that recipe in an upcoming cookbook, so BE READY! It has always been an absolute pleasure to be a part of this publication, especially when I get an opportunity to express my love of cooking while sharing a dash of this life as well. This month, let's have fun with our canna science and make something simple. I've never shared my recipe for "CBD Booshi Bears" before, so here we go (a little bit of science dork and cannabis). This month I focus on a CBD water soluble isolate from the guys up at Mile High Labs in Colorado. They make a wonderful food grade product and I'm definitely a fan! Being crippled before and hurting from the football days, CBD and THC are in my life forever. Some of the defining factors of my own personal health and wellness, CBD being the forerunner for my inflammation and pains. You can't always eat a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil that's infused wherever you go, so grab a bag of bears and get to it! Hope you all enjoy! P.S.- there are THC water soluble products out there on the Nano and Quantum levels so just substitute it or add to for THC in your recipes. Make sure to check out my newly updated website at www.cannabushi.com Now let's get to it! Cheers!

50

Ingredients: 600ml alkaline or distilled water 3 packs Knox Gelatin 1 box cherry Jello (or flavor of your choice) 2 oz. Torani cherry flavor syrup 2 oz. Karo Syrup w/vanilla 2g CBD water soluble isolate from Mile High Labs ¼ cup citric acid 1 ¼ cup sugar 5-6 1ml silicone gummy bear molds (Amazon, trust me) 1 10ml medical dropper or 1000ml scientific beaker with spout Oven safe gloves (optional) **Keeping everything perfectly clean is crucial to fighting an unfriendly thing we call mold** Directions: Toss one tablespoon of citric acid in 100ml of the above water of your choice. Thoroughly mix and let that beast sit. We will be adding that in a few. While you're at it, grab a pack of gelatin and let it bloom in another 200ml of water. Make sure to stir. Grab a clean 'pot' and toss the rest of your water in it. Bring it to a slow rolling boil. Toss your Jello, gelatin, Karo and ¼ cup of sugar in while hot and mix it up well. Get your 1000ml beaker ready or a large glass bowl. Grab the water soluble isolate from Mile High Labs and mix it in your citric acid solution. At this point, time is NOT your friend but can be a helpful ally. Mix your Torani syrup in with both the hot and the "bloomed" gelatin powder. Making sure to mix everything you have together, minus your leftover sugar and citric acid. Once everything is mixed well, either use a glass medical dropper or a glass beaker. This will be hot, so be careful. Pour the finished gelatin solution into your 1ml silicone gummy bear molds. I like to have a flat silicone spatula on hand for over pouring and to keep it as perfect as I can. Remember that the first few will have some bubbles, so just smooth them out as best you can. It gets better the more you pour out. Once you've finished filling all the molds. Place them into the fridge to set.

While you're waiting, grab a food processor and the leftover sugar and citric acid. From this point, you will be adding a more "sour" flavor to your bears so add a little bit at a time. Mix up your custom sugar/ citric acid mixture in the food processor you have. This breaks down the sugar creating something called castor sugar and depending upon how much you run the machine. Confectioners sugar with a little citric acid. You are looking for a little breakdown, hence castor sugar. Once the bears have chilled you want to let them "purge" some excess moisture in a covered open air scenario. Usually around 4-6 hours. After that, toss them into the processed sugar mixture and coat them well. Leave on a tray and let these beasts rest. There you have it! You just made some phenomenal gummy bears that are infused! Remember that you can adapt and modify this recipe to place THC into it. Tons of phenomenal products out there, so get creative with your food- that way you can medicate yourself properly. Because this IS for our own health and wellness!

Hemp CBD Vacations with LUXURY Hempress Farms, LLC >>> BY VeE Castillo When we think of cannabis vacations, many of us may think of one full of dispensary visits, hotboxing in the car since public consumption is illegal in many states, and cannabis merchandise for souvenirs. But what if I told you that there is a luxurious cannabis vacation getaway offering spa and zen experiences? Recently, I traveled to Winston-Salem, NC to visit and get to know Hempress Farms LLC, a luxury CBD company offering a range of hemp CBD products, and luxurious CBD experiences. I had a week-long experience, loaded with the healing benefits of CBD and amazing energy.

About Hempress Farms, LLC Hempress Farms, LLC is owned by Maya Gilliam, a black woman and serial entrepreneur. During the Covid-pandemic, Maya closed her spa, and reopened under Hempress Farms, LLC. Maya saw that change and shift in how and what people spent their money on during pandemic times: “People have really cut back on any unnecessary expenses like

54

massages, facials, and body scrubs. They are doing it from home now.” says Maya. Hempress Farms, LLC is located in downtown Winston-Salem, in a beautiful brick complex built in the 1940’s. A multiple level complex with the hemp CBD dispensary on the main floor, a living/entertainment space below the dispensary, and a beautiful rooftop deck. In the dispensary, customers can enjoy shopping for a large variety of hemp CBD products, indulge in the 5-star product tasting, and arrange for spa services with businesses that Maya collaborates with. Hempress Farms offers products such as hemp flower grown by Hempress Farms, LLC, CBD oil tinctures, CBD infused food seasoning, CBD infused scrubs, hemp tea, CBD balms, and so much more. Spa services include massages with Cori Brown (Tru Hands Massage), Kemetic Yoga with Dawanna Benjamin, and astrological chart readings with Yaaris Bey (Peace by Yaaris).

Hempress Farms, LLC and Community Focused on making sure that people and other business owners understand that “I am your plug, not your competition”, Maya offers a variety of bulk/wholesale products to help businesses like: food, beverage, topical, and others create their products. On Friday nights, Hempress Farms, LLC hosts Afro Beats, and celebration of community, hemp, black beauty and richness, and good vibes. On weekends, Maya does pop-ups at farmers markets where she further showcases the power of hemp and educates locals on utilizing hemp for healing.

Hempress Farms, LLC Cannabis Education Led by Maya, Hempress Farms, LLC offers in person and virtual courses and hands-on training experiences. She educates on cultivation, vertical operations, extractions, product making, trimming, and more. Maya says: “I do a lot of workshops and consultations in hemp, just to help people get into it like I did, to make it easier for them, and help them save money by learning from the experts and skipping all the mistakes.”

My Week Long Experience at Hempress Farms, LLC I didn’t want to leave. As soon as I got there, the vibe hugged my heart. My accommodations were onsite, on the bottom level space which is a full 2 bedroom apartment, with a spiral staircase leading to the rooftop deck, and a porch with sauna right outside of the bedroom I slept in. The sunrise greets the living room and kitchen space, where visitors can also be kissed by the sunrise from the front porch, which is set up with comfortable chairs and tables. My first night, I was greeted by Ms. Phyllis, Maya’s side-kick, and then by Maya with an infused lavender lemonade cocktail, given the grand tour, and ended the night with a massage by Tru Hands Massage. Throughout the week, I met clients, employees, and business partners. I sat in the dispensary and sampled so many of Hempress Farms, LLC amazing

products: infused white truffle oil which blended amazingly on my vegan burger from Sweet Potatoes (thanks so much for the plug Ms. Phyllis.) The dispensary is more so like a lounge. It’s a space where people can come in, work, relax, sample, and network. I enjoyed my 5-star product tasting while sitting on a cozy couch, listening to amazing music that contributed to the beautiful vibe in the place. While experiencing that, I was able to experience being surrounded by hemp plants the whole time. Sitting next to that couch is the massive display or hemp plants in a hydroponics tower- adding great vibes to the space. I experienced kemetic yoga with Dawanna, which helped me decompress. I received an astrology reading from Yaaris, that left me in tears- but in great ways. I met and sampled Happie Foods- a vegan snack company, I met and sampled Blissful Treats- a bakery offering infused options, and I sampled some North Carolina grown cannabis that kept me in beautiful spirits. Afro Beats was a beautiful experience. The space was packed with people in full support of Hempress Farms, LLC, with a mixed crowd indulging in samples and vibes presented by Maya and her team. The D.J kept was amazing, the people full of light, the energy full of love.

In Closing To everyone in Winston-Salem and other locations in and near NC, that came through and welcomed me- THANK YOU. To the businesses that came through with samples of their creations- THANK YOU. To my tribe that drove a distance to meet me- THANK YOU. Maya, for the company you created, for the experience you provided, for what is coming in the feature- THANK YOU. Ms. Phyllis, for making sure that I needed for nothing- THANK YOU. It was my honor to experience such magic in the region of this country that I was born and raised in- Thank you for it all Hempress Farms, LLC. Though Las Vegas is a vacation city, sometimes, chill and relaxation is what is needed for time away. When that time comes- check out Hempress Farms, LLC. You will definitely leave feeling completely decompressed and ready for anything.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSUMING LAB TESTED CANNABIS >>> BY TEE "CANNA" MORENO @CANNAPSYCHMD

Since cannabis has been legalized, it is mandatory by each state for all cannabis products to be lab-tested before being approved to sell for consumption. This crucial step is often overlooked and undervalued. Consumers have every right to know what is in their cannabis, just as they have every right to know what’s in their food. Especially, since some of us are truly using cannabis medicinally. I decided to delve into the processes to fully understand what steps of precautions are necessary for cannabis to hit the shelves. I took a tour with one of our cannabis testing laboratories here in Las Vegas. They were stoked to have this opportunity to share their process and transparency behind lab testing cannabis. No folks, they don’t just light up and assume each product’s potency. It’s actually an extremely intricate, scientifically thorough process. The team I met with is passionate about what they do. Their Director of Microbiology educated me on the actual process by which samples are tested for micros. They go through this process known as “CFU” (a colony-forming unit)

58

which is a measure to quantify bacterial or fungal cells in a given sample. Micros will grow in dark places. For extracts, micros can legally have less than 1,000 CFU, which sounds like a lot, but isn’t. For instance, say a sample is collected and tests at 990 CFU. It passes, but after it is packaged, delivered to stores, and sits in a dark inventory room there is a high potential that it will accumulate some micros. Whereas in flower, the threshold is 10,000 CFU. That is just for yeast and mold though. For total coliform and enterobacteriaceae, the threshold for flower is 1,000 CFU. The failure threshold and testing requirements change for every matrix. Though flower, trim, kief, and infused pre-rolls are categorized as raw plant material and get the same tests and thresholds. Their suggestion is to store your products in a refrigerated space at 32°f, which is the point where micro growth slows down. You will never stop it completely, but 2-8 °c is the point where it is not frozen (which just “pauses” micro growth), and growth will just slowly continue. I wanted to run home and put everything in my fridge immediately, and only pull it out when

in use. This is something that all of us consumers should consider. Another thing that I wanted to get clarification on is the controversy behind manipulating test results. The potency machine HPLC is locked when it is not in use for testing, making it impossible to manipulate results. This machine requires a supervisor to oversee the data collecting scientist as the second pair of eyes when in testing. The team strongly holds their integrity and values to ensure adequate results. Results are never manipulated, we can trust their work to ensure our safety when it comes to consumption. This experience made me appreciate the efforts made before even getting packaged, for all of us to have the privilege to light up and medicate. The lab and I will be collaborating on a walkthrough tour of their facility, as well as a tour through the AMA (Alternative Medicine Association) cultivation facility for selected budtenders and industry professionals. If you have an interest in this opportunity, follow @AmaNev702, and send a dm via Instagram to @CannaPsychMd.

BIGGEST LITTLE boba hits THE BIGGEST LITTLE CITY

R

>>> By Justin Beckelman

iding my bike near the river in Downtown Reno this month, I ran into a new boba shop off West 1st and Roff Way inside the Arlington Towers. I needed a healthy drink, so I thought I’d check it out. It was great meeting Aleks Vetushko and learning all about this popular location- a perfect place for healthy refreshment. JUSTIN BECKELMAN: When did you open? ALEKS VETUSHKO: We just opened last week, the weather has been perfect! JUSTIN: Are you originally from Reno, Nevada? ALEKS: No, Originally from St Petersburg, Russia but living in Reno now and decided to open up a boba shop...there isn't one in Downtown and we love boba! JUSTIN: Can you describe your business to us? What is a Boba drink for those that don't know? ALEKS: A boba drink is a sweet dessert made with milk tea and it comes in lots of fruity flavors. It originated in Taiwan in the 1980's and is becoming more popular in the US. It's unique because it has "boba" - which are sweet tapioca balls in the drink. JUSTIN: What makes your drink stand out over other boba drinks? ALEKS: Opening this month, we are still perfecting our recipes. We use real honey in our drinks, unlike the corn syrups most other shops use, and real milk (or non-dairy substitutes like coconut milk and oat milk - which are free for our customers).

business plan? ALEKS: We actually just opened during the pandemic. We're setting up a lot of delivery apps (Grubhub, DoorDash, etc.) for people who are hesitant to come in.

JUSTIN: What are the most popular drinks you make? ALEKS: The most popular drink is the Thai Milk Tea, but my personal favorite is the Mango Snow.

JUSTIN: Do you have any hemp or green tea drinks? ALEKS: We use green tea as the default in our Matcha milk tea/ Matcha snow, and you can ask for any of the other drinks to be made with green tea instead of black.

JUSTIN: How has opening been since the pandemic? Has it affected you to open your doors or did it help you rethink a

JUSTIN: Do you plan on opening any other stores in the Reno-Tahoe area?

ALEKS: Maybe! Our name is “Biggest Little Boba Shop” so it'd be pretty hard to go anywhere else besides Reno-Tahoe. Our first shop just opened but if things go really well we'd be open to expanding to a different Reno location in the future. JUSTIN: Any local events you might want to be a part of or have in mind when they are up and running again? ALEKS: Yes! We'd love to be involved in cannabis events, the Wine Walk which happens right outside our shop in Downtown Reno, Food Truck Friday, local farmers markets, etc. JUSTIN: How can we contact you for orders? ALEKS: You can order in person at our store off Roff Way, right off of W 1st St. (next to Hookava) or for pick-up/delivery/ curbside on our website (biggestlittlebobashop.com), Instagram/Facebook (@biggestlittlebobashop), and GrubHub. Within the next week we'll also be on UberEats, Postmates, DoorDash, and Yelp Delivery.

THE Connections BETWEEN Cannabis and Brothels

Exploring Nevada's Uniquely Parallel Industries >>> The right to legal cannabis and sex work have much in common—certainly more than most people would believe. While it may not be obvious, these two stigmatized issues are sister industries, and there are a lot of intersectionalities between them. Since both are stigmatized, people involved in these trades have to jump through multiple hoops that other professionals can simply avoid. Let’s talk about why advocates and users of both cannabis and sex work face some of the same hurdles—and what we can do about it.

Where the Stigma Comes From Stigma arises from people not understanding something, being afraid of it, or being misled by disputed information, and it causes certain groups of people to face marginalization. It is a force that society uses to judge people who make different decisions than they do. Stigma can be quiet, like a disgusted look at someone headed into a legal cannabis shop. Or it can be loud, like when my doctors wasted time giving me needless STI tests when my appendix was in the process of bursting. The thing about stigma is that it can come from all directions. It’s not simply aimed at the budtenders and the sex workers—the clients and customers face it as well. Even though both services and products are legal, our voices and opinions are discredited by the mere fact that we are involved in the industry.

of dating and began a satisfying, romantic life after our time together. They faced their fears with someone who didn’t judge them and then moved on. Now, they get to live their best lives. Cannabis and sex work can also help combat anxiety and depression, which are some of the most common mental illness issues in the US. Taking away these legal remedies that have helped so many is as dangerous as getting rid of other forms of treatment. Further, aside from benefiting society, both industries are fun. They bring joy to people’s lives when joy is in short supply. Happiness is important, and the pursuit of it is one of the fundamental freedoms in the US.

Combining Efforts Since there is so much common ground between cannabis and sex work, it only makes sense to combine forces. People who are interested in personal liberty and human rights should support both issues. I have lobbied for both legalized sex work and cannabis use. These are not fringe issues or frivolous thought experiments—they are human rights issues, and lost access to either of these services could destroy lives. If you care about one of these issues, you should care about both. Cannabis and sex work advocates are natural allies.

Cannabis and Sex Work Are Similarly Stigmatized Stigma is pervasive and has a detrimental effect on the lives of everyone it touches. Sadly, cannabis and sex work face many of the same types of stigma. For instance, you can still be fired for legal marijuana use even if you show up for work sober, since there aren’t many protections for workers who use recreationally. And you can be fired for having an OnlyFans account, even if it has no impact on your other jobs. Employees in both industries must use state banks or local credit unions and can’t bank federally. Small banks simply don’t have the same financial capacity of larger institutions, and this is a considerable inconvenience. Processing payments can be a massive headache, and it adds an unnecessary step in getting paid. These types of stigma carry permanent financial and career repercussions for those who work in the industry.

Cannabis and Sex Work Are Good for Humanity Though both industries are considered vice-enablers, they can be transformative, and their benefits have changed lives for the better. The cloud of immorality that seems to surround issues of sex and cannabis is evidence of people’s need for an artificial scandal; something to distract them from the more substantial problems that eat away at society. Sex work and cannabis are not societal ills. Rather, they are lifesavers for some and have virtually no impact on those who choose not to partake.

I’m related to someone whose life was changed by CBD. Before, her seizures rendered her unable to function; with CBD, she became a stellar student and athlete. Similarly, I have worked with clients with incapacitating social anxiety who subsequently overcame their fears

Further, sex and cannabis make an incredible combination. I think that people should be able to use cannabis inside legal brothels and enjoy the many health benefits that go along with it. Bars are common in the brothels so that people can relax before they meet with a sex worker. Cannabis would be even better because it doesn’t cause people to lose their ability to consent the way alcohol can. Yet currently, cannabis use within brothels is not permitted. Dismantling the stigma surrounding sex work and cannabis is the first step toward normalizing their use. After that, we should band together to take action. We need to contact our elected officials to make sure they know our stances on cannabis and sex work. We need to draft petitions and collect signatures so they can hear our voices and understand that the majority of their constituents support these issues. Nevada’s backward legislation and their government’s inclination to drag their feet rather than encourage progress has cost its constituents a lot in terms of tax dollars and the physical relief that cannabis and sex work bring. The truth is that sex workers are the canaries in the coal mine. If our rights are eliminated, it’s a sign that there is a crackdown on so-called morality and individual liberties are being eradicated. Cannabis rights will be next. We must stand together as marginalized communities. With our combined efforts, we can make a huge difference in future legislation. FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH

Be a Driver of Positivity and Appreciation in Every Moment

here are those among us who are not wrapped up in self... Those who are there when the world shits and someone must clean it up, wipe the brow of the sick, the infected, the downtrodden. I sit and stare at the pad of paper on my lap and wonder what is the outcome of my writings? Are they read? Are they appreciated? Then my inner self (call it Soul, Spirit, Universal Energy) brings my mind (call it Will, Consciousness, Self) to the truth that it isn’t necessarily the reward of writing or doing something that is most useful, it is the reception of it within the circle of influence it resides once created. So the better question I ask is; Are they useful? What does all that mean? Well, maybe it has a different meaning to each reader, much like the threefold reality of communication; What I say, What I mean to say, and What you hear. A writer has a unique responsibility to bring those three facets as close together as possible. So, I’ll make this a short and hopefully understandable communication between you (the reader) and I (the writer).

66

These times are showing a growing global attitude of selfish, unaware of consequences, just do me and follow the “norm” be that whatever it may be. I could easily go into the new norm being indoctrinated upon the world by mass media

BY ED NOTE

disinformation, commercializing lifestyles, and the world is going to hell in a handbasket if you don’t (fill in the blanks with the latest damndemic requirements and peer pressure). After all, I did predict mandatory vaccinations and registration of those who do receive one, which if you’re not paying attention is happening, but I’ll save all that for another dissertation. News at 8! With this growing global attitude, I reinforce the importance of vigilance towards how our actions, words, even thoughts are not only a reflection of who we are but have a direct consequential impact on the environment (circle of influence) each of us live and experience within. Ergo, it is important to respect the outcome of those actions, words, and thoughts prior to creating them. There are those among us who are not wrapped up in self and are the true philanthropists/angels. Those who are there when the world shits and someone must clean it up, wipe the brow of the sick, the infected, the downtrodden. These angels are the ones who feed the hungry, clothe the naked, put shoes on the feet of those without. These individuals do so because they can, because they make a conscious choice to be a positive difference, because they have compassion and appreciation for the world and people around them. It is unfortunate that their graciousness is overshadowed

by the mass disinformation media agenda of doom and gloom, and a populous apathy towards anything positive. It is time to understand each and every one of us has the ability to change the present paradigm into one of assistance, compassion, and empathy (some major ingredients in the makeup of love) towards each other (no matter race, sex, age, damndemic association/attitude, or belief system). Truly a journey of change is not untravelable, but it is up to us to be part of the work in paving the way. Consider how you wish to be treated not the way you are and treat others with that same consideration. If there’s someone who is in need, not a drunk looking for a dollar to buy another bottle, but a drunk looking for sobriety, reach out. Reach out with unconditional assistance. The world does not have to come to an end of reason. We don’t have to lose our rights and freedoms. We actually can make a positive difference without being corralled into a negative one. We do still have a will (the power to make choices) so when we choose to do or speak, make it useful. It is not useful to just follow the trend, led by the nose into a world of condemnation and negativity. Stop for just a moment before you make up your mind and listen to that truth that lives within. You are

the only one who can dictate your actions, be they useful or harmful so dictate actions, words, and thoughts that are encouraging, helpful, unbiased, compassionate, reasonable, unselfish, and truthful. Don’t look for the immediate reward, this diminishes the truth of your deeds. Realize you will witness the great reward in the end after diligence and hopefully like minded actions of others. The useful outcome of what you have contributed is the reward. Don’t allow others to bear the entire weight of philanthropic journeys, for the way becomes clearer and with fewer obstacles the more people travel it. Be a driver of positivity and appreciation every moment. Reiteration of my earlier hope: That what I am saying, what I mean to say, and what you hear is; Be a positive force within a world of negatives no matter if anyone gives you recognition for being that force!
