An Interview with Shawn Gold by Stephanie Shehan

hawn Gold has worked for a vast array of amazing companies with the intent of introducing new products into the marketplace. Recently, Shawn started Pilgrim Soul which is a mission-driven company focused on optimizing human creative performance to gain a competitive edge in business and life. I had the opportunity to speak with Shawn about his work within the cannabis industry and his new venture with Pilgrim Soul. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Tell us about your background. SHAWN GOLD: For the last 20 years, I've been working with startup companies. I thrive on introducing new ideas to consumers and doing things that just haven't been done before. Before the internet, I had a company called Touch Tunes, where you could listen to music on the telephone. In the early days of blogging, I helped launch Endgadget, Autoblog, Joystick, and many other blogs that we sold to AOL. From there, I became the CMO of MySpace, helping to scale that business from 25 to 110 million users worldwide and figuring out how advertising was going to integrate into social media. Then I got into the storytelling business with a company called Wattpad. At the time, Wattpad was one of the fastest scaling mobile content sites in the world. Now, it has about 60 million active users a month who share serial stories. That eventually led me to TechStyle, the first company to make subscription fashion work as a business and make it popular with consumers. I helped scale brands like ShoeDazzle, JustFab, and Fabletics with Kate Hudson and Rhianna's Savage x Fenty brand. SS: Have you previously ventured into anything in the cannabis realm? SG: As a longtime consumer, I have always been intrigued by the cannabis industry and started advising companies like MedMen and Charlotte's Web four years ago. I had also been helping Lowell Herb Co, and in 2018 I jumped in full time as the brand's Chief Marketing Officer. Lowell was one of the first great cannabis brands because it was mission-driven with a strong belief system. The brand was about heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainability, and those became our guiding principles. We were best known for our beautiful pre-roll packaging, and in 2017, that was about elevating the integrity of the cannabis industry. We wanted people to be proud to own, consume, and share cannabis products, similar to how they share their favorite wine, chocolate, or Kentucky whiskey. We then went on to open the first cannabis café in America in West Hollywood, California.

SS: What was your inspiration for the journals? SG: In business, I've often used cannabis to help conceive new ideas, go deep inside problems, empathize with my customers, and make nonlinear connections I might not see otherwise. I wanted people to benefit from creative thinking the way I do. I created the journals to help people rethink how they see themselves and

the world around them and uncover new possibilities and ideas. I studied almost every creativity, brainstorming, and innovation book to create these after realizing the creative guide I wanted to use did not exist. The journal uses proven ideation techniques; we just made them more broadly accessible and a lot more fun. SS: What other products does your company offer? SG: At PilgrimSoul.com we have many articles about the creative process and how to tap into it for personal benefit. We also have information about the best strains for various types of creativity and the history of cannabis for creativity. You can also find additional products we are creating to be used with cannabis. We recently launched the Cannabis Creativity Project with online creative exercises. Here you can submit ideas online for our collective. We will also send you a copy of your answers. SS: Are you a cannabis consumer? SG: I have been for over 40 years. Today, I look at cannabis as a purpose-driven recreational activity that helps me see business and personal issues more clearly. Cannabis helps me to step back and look at motivations. I am more apt to look at all sides of an issue if I'm high and admit I am wrong instead of automatically defending my position. And for me, being present is another great benefit I get from cannabis. I find this interesting because the stereotype is, "He's a stoner; he's so out there." For me, cannabis

helps me to focus and connect. I used to love playing with my children when they were young while I was a little bit high. It made empathizing with them and seeing the world from their perspective so much easier. Being present and connecting with people can be hard to do as we deal with the daily grind of life. SS: What are your feelings on Cannabis as it relates to creativity? SG: If you choose, cannabis can be a shortcut to unlocking your innate creative ability and increasing your creative output. Cannabis has been used by artists, scientists, and thinkers for thousands of years to help provide the proper mindset to express new ideas. It allows you to live in the moment and embrace new thoughts as they come to you. People tend to feel less inhibited on cannabis because they can relax and connect more deeply with themselves and their surroundings. We believe that everyone is born creative; we just repress it. Cannabis can be a great shortcut or 'hack' into one's creative flow state. It tends to stimulate the frontal lobe, which is the brain's area attributed to idea product, and it represses the dorsolateral cortex, which is an area of the brain associated with judgment. Like happiness, creativity is a way of traveling more than a destination. Creativity is an individual thing; it is about opening up the aperture of understanding and seeing things in new ways. It is about empathizing with others, experiencing new feelings, expressing yourself, making non-linear connections, experimenting, reinventing, breaking rules, making mistakes, and having fun. Cannabis can help with all these things. SS: What are you working on for the future? SG: In 2021, we will be releasing two additional versions of the Creative Thinking Journal. We are releasing our exclusive live resin cannabis blends for Creative Awareness, Creative Focus, Creative Imagination, and Creative Reflection in California in April via PilgrimSoulCannabis.com. Outside of the cannabis industry, Pilgrim Soul is hard at work to ensure that creative thinking is easily accessible to everyone who may need it. We will have a version of our Creative Thinking Journal that excludes cannabis references and makes our journal an appropriate creative crash course for all ages. SS: How can readers order from Pilgrim Soul and follow on social media? SG: The best way to order from Pilgrim Soul would be through PilgrimSoul.com where we offer our products' full range. Follow us on social media on Instagram @Pilgrim_Soul_Creative, Facebook @ PilgrimSoulCreative and Twitter @creativitycanna. SS: Anything you would like to add? A quote maybe? SG: My favorite quote about creativity this week is by Choreographer Twyla Tharp who said: "Creativity is not just for artists. It's for business people looking for a new way to close a sale; it's for engineers trying to solve a problem; it's for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way. In the future of AI and outsourcing, creativity will be an essential skill that means job security."

NEVADA NATIVE CHRISTINA DYLAG LAUNCHES

L

as Vegas local Christina Dylag is no stranger to challenges. Raised by conservative parents right here in Vegas, once she completed college she ventured out, travelling to destinations such as India, Nepal and Thailand to find herself. Upon her return, having no knowledge of running a business nor any knowledge of cocktails or bartending, Dylag along with her sister opened Velveteen Rabbit in Downtown Las Vegas. According to Dylag, the tools required to open the bar just fell into place. The city’s plan to revamp Downtown provided grants for the business startup and licensing. Fast forward to 2021: Velveteen Rabbit is slowly recovering from our states Covid 19 mandates and Dylag has recently launched her first book entitled Tiny Little Boxes which also bears the tagline How to Cope with Existential Dread by Way of Ice Cream and Other Means. I recently had the chance to sit down with Dylag and talk about the book, how her beliefs have shifted and her unique marketing strategies. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Congratulations on your first book! What was your inspiration and how did you find the time to write a book? CHRISTINA DYLAG: I began writing back in 2013 when we opened Velveteen Rabbit. My intention was to own a business which would allow me to write on the side. I did not want the writing aspect of my life to be so monetarily driven. And for me, the first book I wrote had to reflect my true, authentic self. I had been delving into different self help modalities leading up to the book and in doing so I came up with the idea for the book. It really hit me how conditioned we all are to believe certain things and behave in certain ways. We take on jobs that we don’t even want, and we go to school even if we are not drawn to school. All of these things, even our daily routines are so monotonous. I really wanted to write something that allowed people to really see outside of that box. SS: What is the book about? CD: Tiny Little Boxes encourages readers to truly understand that the restrictions and social constructs placed upon ourselves are unnecessary. And, once those ideologies are thrown out, life can be lived more authentically and freely. Allowing people to see another way forward opens up so much. Living an authentic life, aligned with our purpose and who we are, not only opens things up for us, but allows everyone around us to have that possibility as well. SS: I wholeheartedly agree with you. I think, oftentimes people do not allow themselves even the thought of straying from their conditioned beliefs until they are at the end of their lives. It is unfortunate to wait that long. Have you always been a deep thinker? CD: I have always been drawn to different philosophies and thinking outside of the box which allowed me this life path of opening a business that I knew nothing about and writing a book that could potentially help others. When I first thought about opening Velveteen, I asked myself why couldn’t I open a bar, and why couldn’t I do it now. The typical answer “Because other people said so” did not sit well with me. But again, that is just me thinking outside of the box and ignoring what the people inside of

14

the box were saying. SS: Once finished, you implemented a few unique marketing strategies… CD: I did. When I finally finished the book, it became time to think about how to uniquely market it. There are such a mass amount of books published each year that I knew I had to come up with something catchy and cool. That catch turned out to be ice cream, Nihilist Ice Cream to be exact. Initially, I purchased a hearse with the idea of wrapping it and then venturing out to barter people’s souls for ice cream. Hence the cover tagline: How to Cope with Existential Dread by Way of Ice Cream and Other Means. A couple things interfered with that vision, Covid 19 and the perception that the hearse and bartering for souls was just too dark for some people. Not everyone understood what I was trying to do and at the time, I was buying the ice cream wholesale. Eventually, the owner of the last company I dealt with let me know she was done with ice cream and she asked if I was interested in acquiring her equipment. After purchasing the equipment and receiving some ice cream making lessons, my ideas shifted a bit and now, we offer cocktails and ice cream at Velveteen Rabbit. While there, you can purchase a copy of my book right out of the vending machine. As for the hearse, it will still venture out as I have plans to do pop-ups once Covid restrictions are lifted. SS: How fun! What awesome marketing ideas. As we wrap this up, do you have any words of inspiration for our readers? CD: Follow your truth and adhere to it strongly. People will question you. People will doubt you. That's just the nature of the beast and something for you to overcome on your journey. Freedom is on the other side of your conditioned beliefs. Tiny Little Boxes is available at Writer's Block downtown, as well as in the vending machine at Velveteen Rabbit. You can also order a copy online at nihilisticecream.com or on Amazon. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF MICHELLE WRIGHT Treating Bi-Polar & Multiple Illnesses with Cannabis

Michelle Wright isn’t shy about discussing her diagnosis of a Bi-Polar disorder and numerous ailments she’s conquered, using cannabis to manage symptoms and put serious maladies into remission. In fact, it’s become her life’s mission to share her own struggles with the highs and lows of illnesses and the help she’s found with the plant. “I’ve dealt with my mood swings, personality switches, and ups and downs gracefully and tragically over the years,” she shared openly on her Facebook page. A holistic practitioner and energy worker, Wright said she is a 100 percent disabled, retired U.S. Navy Veteran Cryptologist, turned cannabis grower, extractor, and renaissance woman. “I’ve always been a self-learner, but also have a minor in chemistry and a BA in abnormal psychology,” she shared. Her first experience with cannabis was when she was 12 years-old, but her first healing experience came in 2014 after she left the Navy and was given months to a few years to live, while being placed on hospice care. “I had been suffering for two years while being helped at a pain management clinic while stationed in Hawaii, when a nurse suggested I try cannabis.” She said she had become addicted to painkillers while in pain management care in Hawaii. Cannabis wasn’t yet legal in the state, so after moving from Honolulu to Sacramento, she acquired a medical cannabis card on her first day in California. Then, she immediately headed to a dispensary, purchasing some OG Skywalker flower, and smoked a few bowls.

16

Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS

“That was the first time in years I didn’t feel pain or have thoughts of suicide,” she added. Her backstory began in 2010 while on active duty in the U.S. Navy, working in Pensacola, Florida as a cryptologist. She said it was a stressful job that required her to be trained in both linguistics and mathematics, allowing her to decipher coded messages, as well as create encoded messages. After coming home from a months long overseas tour, she didn’t feel right, starting with a two-week long debilitating migraine that left her passing out while standing in ranks. Symptoms included paralysis, with weakness and drooping on the right side of her face. Absence seizures turned into clonic seizures that included intense pain. “I was transferred to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, and saw neurosurgeon, Dr. Quindelin, with 50 years of experience,” she said. “At the time I was prescribed Topamax, Maxalt, Gabapentin, Diazepam, high blood pressure medication, Sertraline, Stadol, Fentanyl, percocet, morphine, Toradol, Prednisone, Promethazine, and Flexeril. I was a hot mess.” A blood clot was found in her arachnoid area of the brain, between the brain and skull. What looked like a Traumatic Brain Injury was diagnosed as chronic meningitis, or inflammation of the brain, encephalitis. They also found substantial scar damage to her trigeminal nerve, occipital, and vagus nerve. The only conclusion found was that she presented with these multiple health issues after receiving an Anthrax vaccine by the Navy prior to going overseas.

CALIFORNIA, CANNABIS & HEALING After her positive experience in merely smoking cannabis for relief, Wright said she paid another visit to the dispensary to see what else she could try. “I went back and talked with Penny, a knowledgeable budtender,” she said. “She told me about the benefits of full extract cannabis oil. I bought 60 grams of Tahoe OG oil and began a protocol of ingesting a half a gram in the morning and a half a gram at night.”

Wright said she was able to cut her pharmaceuticals down one by one, and in three weeks did away with the Stadol and Percocet, while reducing the100 milligram Fentanyl patches by half. By week four she was off all of the medications once prescribed for numerous ailments that had now subsided. “Fentanyl was the most difficult to get off of,” she shared. “I had two clonic seizures during week four because I didn’t have enough cannabis oil in my system, and my brain swelled so bad my right eye popped out of the socket!” Wright doesn’t recommend transitioning from pharmaceuticals alone, as she did, and encourages the help of a doctor to titrate down from medications. That said, most doctors aren’t aware of how cannabis works, and the patient will need to slowly do a step-down protocol to replace the medications with cannabis oil. That said, the transition can be done in tandem, as the oil will quell many of the negative transitory symptoms.

PLANT PRESCRIPTION FOR LIFE Her daily dosing protocols included a change in diet, as she did away with sugar, red meat, and dairy. “I ended up taking up to a gram and a half a day of cannabis oil for three months - with no craving at all for the Fentanyl, and no seizures,” she said. “Many other diagnoses, like Fibromyalgia and Lupus, were gone - with migraines non-existent, and no swelling in my brain at all. My liver and pancreas, which were once inflamed, presented as normal.” Within six months Wright felt safe to say that her ailments were now in remission. After going back to the neurologist, he asked her to prove that the plant healed her, putting her through a plethora of tests, before convincing, or better yet, educating the good doctor. Due to the scarring on her brain, she now has short-term memory loss. She also deals with nerve pain on occasion, manageable with cannabis. Aside from taking a quarter gram of cannabis oil each day, Wright has also added cannabidiol, or CBD, to her daily dosing. She also smokes three dabs of CBD Grandaddy Purple crumble daily; with 100 milligrams of CBD, 100 milligrams of CBG (cannabigerol, a phytocannabinoid), and a half a gram of Delta 8 (milder euphoria than Delta 9 THC) per day. She also eats medibles and smokes flower regularly. Once replacing pharmaceuticals, the plant must be kept in your system to keep illness at bay. Consider it a plant prescription for life. “My cannabis protocols keep me happy, seizure-free, and healthy in mind and body,” she concluded. “I owe my life to cannabis, because without it I would be dead six feet under in the ground, instead of sitting here chatting with you.”

Eliad Damti Cosmic Wraps

Las Vegas based artist Simone Russ has been creating art for as long as she can remember. Throughout school she studied fine art, focusing on mainly portraits and figurative work, which eventually culminated into a day job as a caricature artist. In 2019, she began experimenting with resin, and soon she turned her hand towards making jewelry. Now, Simone prefers to work with resin, silicone, and polymer clay to create fun and colorful jewelry. She currently has two main jewelry lines: Cute Berry Jewelry, which is mostly fruit and plant themed, like strawberries and cactus and sunflowers, and Cute Berry After Dark, which is her cannabis themed jewelry line.

Eliad Damti is the owner and creator of Cosmic Wraps. Born in Israel, he spent the first 23 years of his life there. His mother was born and raised in Northern Nevada and immigrated to Israel in her 20’s - it was her and Damti’s family that eventually led him back to the area. After attending a music festival and admiring another artist’s jewelry, Damti was inspired to begin designing his own jewelry and has since been most passionate about designing and creating his line. His hope is that one day, his jewelry will inspire someone to start creating jewelry on their own.

Simone loves bright colors and glitter, which is obvious when looking at any of her designs. When asked about her love of color, Simone said, “The great thing about color is that there are endless combinations, leading to endless design ideas. So, if I make a weed leaf dangle earring in green, I would want to try making it in pink (my favorite color) as well. And if it looks good in pink, it’ll probably look good in purple, and by that point, you might as well make it in every color, and suddenly you have a collection.” As a cannabis consumer herself, Simone noticed weed leaf designs everywhere but they were almost exclusively green. And, after seeing all of the 420 models on Instagram wearing amazing, colorful outfits, with boring or no jewelry, she knew she could make something that would look better with their outfits and be cuter than anything currently available. When asked what she has coming up in the future, Simone alluded to recently purchasing a 3D printer which we are sure she has big plans for. She is also looking forward to getting back to inperson events and she is always working on new designs.

His process in creating each piece depends mainly on the stones he selects for the project. Damti loves working on special creations with a unique one of a kind look. Working off the stones allows each piece to be unique and in turn, he never repeats a design twice. Damti also does custom work- he has certain openings throughout the year when he takes custom orders. Custom orders, at times, are his favorite to work on because he gets to bring someone's vision and dream to life, as well as have them forever connected with their favorite stones. Damti does have a good collection of crystals he works with but he is always open to accepting personal crystals that can be included in custom creations. When asked what advice he would give to new artists, Damti replied, “My best advice to someone that is just starting is, if you feel frustrated let it go for a while; if you really love it, you will be back for more. A Veg as-based adventuress exploring weird shit in the desert...and beyond

1979assuming your grandma lived in a double wide, kept her TV constantly running in the background at low volume, and had hundreds of clown figurines lining the walls on custom built wooden shelves. Halfway between Las Vegas and Reno, after 3 hours of nothing but the occasional Joshua tree dotting the endless sagebrush barrens, it looms large on the skyline of the historic mining town of Tonopah: a 30-foot plywood clown hot-glued to the side of one of the many budget motels lining US 95 as it passes through town. A sign announces its pedigreenot just the Clown Motel; it’s the World Famous Clown Motel. The rest of the accommodations in Tonopah are no frills and no nonsense: Economy Inn, Comfort Inn, National 9, Best Western... nothing to see here that you wouldn't find in Bellingham or Buffalo, except maybe the historic, restored Mizpah -- and who among us can afford to stay there? But the Clown Motel outshines the clutter of dingy competitors like an exotic orchid rising from a patch of crabgrass. Rare is the tourist who can hurtle past without at least tapping the brakes in disbelief; it's just so weird!! If you are so bold as to hang a left and check it out, you’re confronted with an unpretentious L-shaped clapboard two-story slouching in the desert sun, an indifferent bystander to the tragicomedy of the modern age. The aforementioned 30-foot plywood clown guards the parking lot, and a neon sign advertises BIKERS WELCOME! The lobby is wood paneled and shag carpeted, just like your grandma's house back around

20

I'm not kidding, there are literally hundreds of clown figurines arranged on shelves all over the lobby ranging in size from a terrifying 6-foot clown mannequin who greets you upon entrance, to cutesy little porcelain clown figurines no more than a few inches tall. There are sad clowns, happy clowns, fat clowns and skinny clowns, cute clowns and scary clowns, old clowns, young clowns. Christmas clowns, Mardi Gras clowns…mass-produced and hand-crafted clowns. People send them in from all over the world. In fact, people leave entire clown collections to the motel in their estates, and the management finds a place for each one. I first stayed at the clown motel on one of my first forays into central Nevada back in 2015, before the current management took over, when it was (believe it or not) even more creepy and decrepit. The carpet, drapes and popcorn ceiling were thoroughly soaked in decades’ worth of cigarette smoke, and the ginormous Atomic Age hunk of glass and chrome on the dresser turned out to be what must have been one of the earliest prototypes of the microwave oven introduced to American kitchens. But despite the lack of amenities, dingy aesthetic and supremely creepy old pioneer cemetery festering next door…between the many mining operations in the area and the lack of other temporary housing available, the Clown Motel was booked solid – that

night, and every night! I was lucky to get a room at all, so I could hardly complain about burn holes in the bedspread or the Buicksized microwave. The sheets were clean, the water was hot, and the price was the lowest in town. What’s a few creepy clowns between friends? Speaking of clowns, me being me, my only complaint was the surprising and frankly disappointing lack of clown-themed decor. Other than a colorful numbered clown on the door and one lonely tasteful velvet painting on the bedroom wall, there was nothing to indicate this was a clown themed motel at all. Thankfully, this was all to change. My frugality and fondness for all things creepy led me to stay at the Clown Motel many times over the years -- on my way to and from Burning Man, and on other random road trips. And it was always the same, until one fateful day in summer 2019, when I rolled up and found the exterior being painted with a fresh coat of some delightfully garish Pantone reject. The sound of a table saw buzzed off in the distance, and the smell of fresh carpet filled the air like a toxic bouquet. Say it ain’t so – someone finally bought the Clown Motel?! Over the preceding couple of years my Facebook wall had been subjected to many posts from friends and followers, alerting me to the news that the Clown Motel was for sale. Of course everyone was hoping the right kind of buyer would come along – someone who wouldn’t just de-clown it and turn it into another bland, boring budget motel. But it takes a very specific kind of person to buy and operate a motel in the middle of Nevada, so expectations weren’t very high. Thankfully, however, despite the low odds such a person did exist! I found all this out by walking into the lobby that summer day in 2019 to see what was going on, and being greeted by a cheerful, energetic Indian guy who was more than happy to fill me in. His name was Hame

Anand, he was the proud new manager of the Clown Motel…and his story was incredible! A former ad agency creative director in his native India, Hame had immigrated to the U.S. to help his parents run a couple of motels in Vegas. Business was booming, but boring. Hame longed for a creative outlet! So a close friend offered to bankroll a new property- one that Hame could run as he saw fit. The only stipulation was that the purchase price be under $1 million. Well, anyone who knows anything about the hospitality industry knows that $1 million won’t buy diddly-squat in the Vegas motel market, so initially Hame despaired…until one night, he happened to be watching TV and saw a news story about the World Famous Clown Motel being for sale. It was the proverbial jackpot! Not only had Hame long harbored a fondness for clowns, but the asking price was just under one million dollars! At first, his parents thought he was nuts – a clown-covered motel in the middle of nowhere, Nevada?! But when he convinced them to drive up with him and check it out, the savvy businesspeople immediately recognized the potential. Not only was it right on the main highway between Vegas and Reno, it had already acquired plenty of social media buzz and a sort of cult mystique. It was just waiting for someone to come along and turn the clown shtick up to 11 – and Hame was just the guy to do it! Out went the smoke-stained curtains, carpets and steampunk microwaves – in came striped curtains, colorful accent pillows and updated but crazy-colored appliances. And clown artwork! Lots of clown artwork! At first, Hame commissioned a local artist to do dozens of celebrity clown paintings – there was Albert Einstein as a clown, Marilyn Monroe as a clown, even Elvis as a clown! Then (probably much to the chagrin of the Tonopah Chamber of Commerce) he commissioned additional giant 30-foot clowns for the building’s façade – so people could really see it from miles away! An artist-in-residence was hired to do all new numbered clown paintings for the doors of the rooms, and a new line of merchandise was designed and sold in the expanded lobby gift shop.

Nowadays, business at the Clown Motel is booming – local miners, curious travelers, and clown aficionados from all over the world fill its rooms on a nightly basis. Covid was but a speed bump for the ambitions of the newly fabulous Clown Motel – and when the pandemic is over, things are really going to go nuts! At least two B-movies have already been filmed at the Clown, and ghost hunters like the place because it’s allegedly haunted – by the ghosts of clowns? The neighboring pioneers? Or maybe clown pioneers? It’s hard to say. But one thing’s for sure – the Clown Motel is experiencing a serious Renaissance, and it’s about damn time! So if you’re looking for a fun getaway only a few hours from home (from either Vegas or Reno) check it out! Get a room, have dinner at the Mizpah, smoke a doobie in the old cemetery after dark, buy a few clown souvenirs…and be sure to tell Hame I said Hi!

AN INTERVIEW WITH Nicole Buffong

>>> BY VeE Castillo

“People, politicians, cities, states, etc., should all hear from cannabis patients regarding cannabis

and quality of life. Many will find patients reporting that their quality of life improved since they added cannabis to their treatment plans.” — Nicole Buffong NICOLE BUFFONG- BEFORE THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY A straight A honor roll student with allergies that caused seizures, and a medical doctor in the home, Nicole always knew the truth about the medicinal and healing value of plants and herbs: “Both of my parents are from the Caribbean. My mother is from Trinidad and my father is from Dominica so my relationship with cannabis from an early age was different than most Americans.” Nicole battled medical complications as a child that led to episodes. Though her father was a doctor, her parents chose to treat her allergies and seizures using alternative methods- no prescriptions: Resilience, truth, knowledge, and determination are just a few words that come to mind when I think about Nicole Buffong. The Las Vegas resident who relocated from the south for safe access to cannabis, former Georgia Chapter President of Minorities for Medical Marijuana, and current Western Regional Director for Minorities for Medical Marijuana, is on a global mission, starting with the United States. From childhood, Nicole Buffong has been battling medical conditions/ health complications, and since that time, Nicole has been aware of the medicinal value of plants, including cannabis. With her bloodline linking her to the Caribbean, her roots grounded in the south, and a passion for healing with plants, Nicole is on a mission to educate and create safe access to plant medicines like cannabis. Nicole’s story is like many who have medical conditions/ complications that cannabis can help with, but live in states that prohibit cannabis. Wanting to treat medical conditions with cannabis isn’t a choice that comes with zero consequences in many places. For Nicole, that place was Georgia and the move she made was to Las Vegas, but not before launching the Georgia Chapter President of Minorities for Medical Marijuana: “After I was diagnosed with HIV in 2017, I began a research project into understanding how cannabis is used medicinally for a variety of diagnoses. That’s when I learned about the endocannabinoid system. I learned about the different compounds that make up the cannabis plant, and I began to do research on legislation. I wanted to understand how to change the laws regarding cannabis being consumed as medicine, specifically in Georgia because that’s where I was living. I was introduced by my cousin Takiya, to Roz McCarthy, the founder of Minorities for Medical Marijuana. Roz asked me to launch the Georgia Chapter for Minorities for Medical Marijuana and I did at the end of 2017.”

24

“I had allergies that caused seizures that started when I was 8-9 years old. My parents fought hard to not get me labeled as ADHD and refused to put me on Ritalin or any other seizure medication. Once we determined that the episodes correlated with my diet and environmental exposures, we adjusted without pharmaceuticals. My parents changed my diet and included humidifiers inside my classrooms which helped reduce the amount of episodes.” By the 11th grade, cannabis became a part of Nicole’s life. She began to consume with her friends and noticed that her episodes diminished. This was during the same time that Nicole chose to be honest with her father about her consumption of cannabis: “In the 11th grade, my father confronted me after a night out with friends and asked if I was smoking weed. Of course I did not deny it because at this point I had already found a pipe of his hidden in his bathroom with cannabis residue in it, so I knew he knew what it smelled like and what a person that was high looked like. My father never punished me for consuming cannabis; it was only the tobacco that he had a real problem with. He had love for the plant like I did so it was more of an understanding. ” By the time Nicole was in college, cannabis consumption was a part of her day to day. Because of drug tests, she mostly worked bartending jobs, and jobs that didn’t require drug tests. NICOLE BUFFONG- TRAGEDY, GRIEF, AND PLANTS In 2006, Nicole suffered a loss that changed her life. Her father and sister were killed in a car accident: “My father and my sister were killed in a car accident in Atlanta on their way to my 25th birthday party. This accident changed the course of my life for the

next 10 years because I did not understand how to manage my grief and guilt.” Nicole tried to find healing and comfort through cocaine, ecstasy, and sex. In 2017, she received news that would change her life again: “Using cocaine, ecstasy, and sex to try to self medicate, culminated into the diagnosis of HIV which I received in early 2017.” Following the teachings of Dr. Sebi, Dr. Africa, and Mama Afua’s, Nicole focused on the medicinal properties of cannabis, and consumed an alkaline diet-an eating plan that emphasizes fresh vegetables and fruits with the aim of maintaining an optimal pH level in the body. “Dr. Sebi , Dr. Africa, and Mama Afua’s teach that an alkaline body cannot carry disease and so, I began my intimate relationship with plant medicine instead of synthetic medicine to help heal my body. This is due to my upbringing, because of my cultural roots to the Caribbean, that I knew how valuable implementing plant medicine into my treatment regiment was.” NICOLE BUFFONG- IN THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY Nicole is on a mission to change the narrative when it comes to cannabis and its healing effects. She wears multiple hats in the cannabis industry: WESTERN REGIONAL DIRECTOR FOR MINORITIES FOR MEDICAL MARIJUANA: “As Western regional director it is my job to find leaders in the states that I manage that will best be able to execute our mission. In each state, the best way to support Minorities for Medical Marijuana is to become a member. You can learn more about membership at www.m4mmunited. org. I manage 8 states: California, Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and Hawaii. April 17 through the 25th will be a week of service on behalf of my Nordie‘s for medical marijuana right now we are planning to execute an expungement clinic in Arizona and more events will be announced shortly.” DIRECTOR OF MEDICAL VOICES FOR CHAMBER OF CANNABIS: “This is an all female founded, diverse, and inclusive non-profit. M4MM has partnered with www.thechamberofcannabis.org to advise the organization on social equity policy recommendations.” POSTCAST HOST FOR CANNABIS CONNECTION WORLD: “The Cannabis Connection World podcast ended when I moved to Nevada. I am considering relaunching with a vlog series in the near future. The consulting arm of Cannabis Connection World is still thriving.” Nicole does work for, and has also worked as a Brand Ambassador for Greenheart and Director of Business Development for AURA Ventures. IN CLOSING Nicole’s story, fight, and passion is inspiring. Nothing has stopped her and she continues to make strides toward big time global goals in the cannabis space: “Over the years I have extended my network within the industry to provide potential clients with the resources they need to succeed in the billion dollar global cannabis industry. My long-term goal is to acquire my citizenship of Trinidad and Tobago so that I can relocate, purchase land, and become a cannabis and hemp farmer. My dream is to build healing homes throughout the Caribbean; places where people can go and receive naturopathic medical treatment in a tropical paradise using indigenous medicinal plants.”

Local Biz Spotlight

ANDREW "DRUSKI" HATCHER JR. DRUSKI MEDIA For this month’s local business spotlight, I had the chance to sit down with Andrew “Druski” Hatcher Jr, owner of Druski Media. Andrew works with many of our local canna-chefs as well as an array of individuals and businesses to develop their media goals. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me. You seem to have a handle on the Las Vegas landscape, are you originally from Vegas? ANDREW HATCHER: Yes, I was born and raised in East Las Vegas. SS: Very cool, I was also born and raised in East Las Vegas. Tell me about your background prior to what you are doing now. AH: I started in the restaurant industry early in my young life, around 1998. From 1998 until 2002, I worked in restaurants in the back of the house as a dishwasher and line cook. From 2002-2005, I activated cell phones - back then that was a booming market and stores were everywhere. From there I went into the security field and worked as a trainer for Harrah’s. In 2008, I got married, went back into the restaurant industry and got my marketing degree. SS: How did you get into the media realm? AH: In 2012, I started my first media company AnDSoCustom Media. Since 2008, I had been posting on YouTube and had a top-rated men’s hair blog at the time which inspired me to start my own media company. For the next four years, I educated myself in marketing through the Wharton School of Business, Curtin University and the College of Southern Nevada, and applied what I was learning to my own blog, YouTube channel, and social media platforms. In 2016 I interned at a local events company and that's where I fell into photography. At the time, the company

44

didn’t have anyone doing media for them. I created flyers, started booking photoshoots and vendors for the events, and created video content for them. And, in 2017, Photos By Druski was born. That same year, an angel investor gave me $1000, a lav mic, linear recorder, tripod, and installed Adobe Lightroom on my laptop and said, “Get a camera, you have an eye for this that all the years of college I have cannot duplicate,” and it’s been on since then. In late 2019 my company name changed to Druski Media to reflect the scope of content that I produce and now I produce everything from BTS (Behind the Scenes) content for famous rappers to commercials for restaurants and photos for families. SS: What an amazing journey thus far. What type of projects are you currently working on? AH: Currently, I assist and produce content for a couple of celebrity chefs, Chef Bray and Jeff The Chef as well as a lot of the street chef community in Las Vegas. I am one of the lead cameramen for the BBB TV live shows, I produce commercials, shoot real estate photos, host, edit, and produce a podcast called Growing With Druski on Spotify and Apple Podcasts with my co-host Dupree Williams. I am also the producer of the Hoe Is Life Podcast on the Druski Media Network, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts and create content for the network itself. SS: Why this field? What do you love about your work? AH: I love that I get to interact with the world! I get the freedom to go anywhere and capture moments in time that will become stories that will be told in the future. SS: Who have been some of your favorites to work with? AH: My favorites have definitely been Chef Bray and Tasha Featherstone of STFU Designs. I have traveled more with those two ladies in a year than I have in my whole life. SS: What advice would you give to those newly entering the photography/videography industry? AH: Learn the rules then break them. Always keep a record of your photographs, who or what the subject was. Note where and when you took the photo. The why?...don’t worry about it. Just shoot. Shoot as much as possible. Learn daily. Get in with someone you may or may not know who is into photography and pick their brain, then go experiment with the knowledge you just gained. REPEAT DAILY.

SS: What great advice. Since this is a cannabis magazine, I have to ask, are you a cannabis advocate and consumer? If so, favorite strains or products? AH: I have been a cannabis advocate and consumer since 2012 when I found out that cannabis helped make me an A student in college. Since then, I use cannabis in my daily life. My favorite strain right now is anything from the Cookies brand and a strain introduced to me by a farmer in Oregon called Tinkerbell's Revenge. A 60% sativa 40% indica blend. SS: Nice! Have you worked with any cannabis companies? If so, any challenges shooting plants? AH: I haven’t worked directly with any cannabis companies as of yet. I have shot content for an influencer with Cannavative’s cannabis products. I would love to get the chance to work with Cookies, Jardin, and Culture & Cannabis. Since I’ve grown and harvested cannabis for my wife who has M.S, I have captured moments of plants on camera and the only issue that typically arises is the fans. You have to turn off the fans for a moment when you are taking photos of plants. Also, if using LED lamps, turn those off and use a soft white lighting source to get the best photos of cannabis. SS: As an advocate, any changes you would like to see made in the industry?

LOBSTER MAC N CHEESE PREPARED BY CHEF BRAY & JEFF THE CHEF

AH: I would like to get inside the Old Pal grow house and pheno hunt for them to produce some high-quality cannabis that averages out at 18%-20% THC and won’t go for over $10-$12 a gram with tax out the door. I would like to see all the lower-tier cannabis companies step up their game and produce high-quality cannabis that the patients can use. If the patient that lives 25 miles from a dispensary can produce high-quality cannabis for themselves, then every cultivation company can produce the same. SS: Anything you would like to add before we wrap up? AH: To all the photographers that are just starting out...the market isn’t saturated. Other photographers aren’t you, so keep doing you. Build relationships with everyone you work with, you never know what rooms you will be invited into. Don’t do this (photography) just for the money. You will be disappointed. Do this because you love to do it. Your photos will show it and when you’re not expecting it, your bank account will too. SS: How can those interested, secure your services? And, how can our readers follow you on social media? AH: I can be reached directly at (702) 815-7558 or by email at photosbydruski@gmail.com. Please follow me on Instagram @DruskiMedia. HELIX Blood Orange Gummies

There’s something about the Helix Blood Orange gummies that has me feeling nostalgic. I don’t know if it’s the frosted sugar coating, the unusual but oddly enjoyable texture or the tropical orange flavor, but whatever it is, it has me daydreaming about couch-forts and slippyslides. With summer quickly approaching I can see these twisted little gummies become a party favorite for everyone's backyard celebrations and couch-fort compounds.

PRODUCTS TRYKE Wintergreen THC Mist

SHWA

I’ve been looking forward to trying a cannabis infused breath spray. Been a fan of fresh breath all my life, and a fan of cannabis almost as long. Even though I’m more of a spearmint person than a winter green person, it didn’t discourage me from squirting a couple blasts of Tryke’s Winter Green THC Mist in my mouth. The winter green essence isn’t overpowering and lingers for a second in the nose, which is nice. The slim design looks like a stubby dry-erase pen so it can easily be stashed away in a purse or pocket. Definitely one of my favorite ways to consume cannabis discreetly, all while staying fresh so I can run my mouth indiscriminately.

TRYKE Dutch Treat Haze Live Resin Badder

Dude, This Tryke Double Dutch Bus is comin’ down the street. The Dutch Treat Haze will have you shufflin’ your feet. You'll feel hammered from the over-abundant combination of two couch-locking terpenes (4% terpinolene / 2% myrcene) This is new ocimene territory for me. I’ve never seen any lab result for a concentrate score even double digit milligrams, let alone 24 whopping milligrams. We should be able to isolate the benefits of it, if we don't fall asleep from this killer Badder I'm super impressed.

TRYKE Sativa Orange Gummies

Peel open a package of Tryke’s Sativa Orange Gummies and get brushed with the delicate fragrance of tangerines. These zesty little 5mg THC gummy cubes are designed for the sensitive consumer. As I’ve said before, if you or someone you know is worried about getting too high from edibles, these Tryke Sativa Gummies are the best gateway into a world of long lasting, but manageable highs.

TRYKE The Potion

I was feelin’ a bit under the weather one Sunday morning. It was nothin’ “COVID-ish”, but you know, my back ached, my skirt was too tight, my shit shook from the left to the right, and I lost my MoJo. I didn't even feel like the usual coffee & herbs morning routine as I slumped my big ass on the leather recliner and reached for the remote. Instead of grabbing the remote, I scooped up a lonesome jar of Tryke Diamond. What is this? Hmm... The Potion. Okay, let's see if it can fix my shitiness. Damn, AAA+ (that's Triple A Plus). The Potion happens to be 215% effective. Back stopped aching, skirt loosened up, my shit became stable and I got my MoJo back! I know you're saying that's impossible or unfathomable. But I have a 115% margin of error to state code. Not to be confused with any actual state codes.

Once you get past the package's security system and fold back the gold wrapper, chunks of chocolate nibs sourced from the Marañón River Valley in Peru, poke through the silky smooth texture of the bar. A bar with 1.5 ounces of tangy raspberry enhanced chocolate and 100mg of THC. Break off a chunk of the scored chocolate squares or devour the entire bar in one decadent sitting. No matter how you eat it, there is no possible way to be disappointed with Binske.

Incredibly medicinal, Lime Killer is more than 2:1 CBD to THC. I've never seen labs so terp-heavy in a CBD dominant flower. Imagine the numbers if it were spun into wax. Terpinolene and myrcene combine for 15mg/g, which changed the THC effects to feel like about 20%. Think I'm kidding? Head up to NuLeaf for yourself and hunt down the Lime Killer. An abundance of CBD usually equalizes my head and resets my high, but here it provided clarity while still enjoying the head spin. Forget the Miller, its Lime Killer time.

Beautiful eco-friendly packaging City Trees. Sophistication and sustainability at its finest. It almost reminds me of a cologne bottle at first glance but let's not get this (mixed up). Remedy’s Wedding Cake Sky Resin Sugar is a twinkling dab of golden goodness. I try not to over-do my dabbing so that I don’t blow out my tolerance, but Remedy doesn’t make it easy. They know my weak spots, with 80% THC Remedy has me buckling at the knees and I’m gonna have to break off another chunk of the sweet sky resin. Gluttony has never felt this good!

One of Remedy’s pillar products, 707 Headband has increased in THC and myrcene every time I've seen it over the past year or two. Boasting flower lab results of 17mg/g myrcene and minimal limonene, this is a perfect flower for any indica lover. Sit back and enjoy the head spin and sink into your favorite chair. I've been known to fall asleep sitting in an upright position from this Remedy top shelfer. That being said, the few times this has happened, I've been in my favorite electric leather recliner, and could have easily put my feet up with a push of a button, had I not been mesmerized by it. The name “headband” was conceived because the original grow team experienced a feeling of wearing an elastic headband or baseball cap, many times reaching to take it off and coming up giggling and empty handed. Keep this mother plant safe and isolated, Remedy. We'd all be worse off without it. This strain is a major analgesic, and delivers rest and relaxation to anyone who lights it up.

Lordy, Lordy what have I done? I couldn't resist dabbing out of Wedlock. Should I have saved myself until after we said our vows? Remedy and HydroStar tied the knot between Wedding Cake and Original Glue to create this Wedlock Sky Resin Sugar. This is not a wax for everyone. With myrcene being non-existent and almost 2% limonene, expect to get up off your ass and get some shit done. 3% caryophyllene will obliterate any anxiety, paranoia, or stress felt prior to combustion. Wedlock Sky Resin Sugar is remarkable, but I can't be loyal to it. I guess I shouldn't have married it, because now I have to commit adultery with the next Sky Resin on my list, Lemon Diesel.

CONGRATULATIONS A'ESHA GOINS Our Cannabis Community Leader >>>

By Shwa Laytart, CEIC Core Team

You may remember the founder of Black Joy Consulting, A’Esha Goins, from our October 2020 issue. At the time, Goins had just started her nonprofit, Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community (CEIC). The Nevada nonprofit organization established the Nevada Cannabis Community Reinvestment Fund (NCCRFund). With this fund, “The NCCRFund will invest directly into communities of color that have been directly affected by discriminatory cannabis policies, over policing and sentencing disparity, offer assistance to job seekers and entrepreneurs in need of technical support, regulatory compliance assistance, and reducing barriers to licensure and employment in the regulated industry.” Back in 2020, Goins was also named a finalist in the Rising Star category of the 2020 Women of Distinction Awards presented by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Southern Nevada. So it should come as no surprise that in 2021 Governor Sisolak has named Goins as one of the eight members appointed to Nevada’s Cannabis Advisory Commission. With her recent bill BDR 360 to reduce the punishment for juvenile possession coming up for a vote in May(?), we check back in with A’Esha Goins to find out how she’s making progress happen: Shwa Laytart: Congratulations on your recent appointment to the Cannabis Advisory Commission. How do you see this new position assisting you with the mission of CEIC?

challenges. I am proud to say, although all departments have a different function they have all remained focused on the general intent of the bill which is to minimize incarceration and/ or over punishing our youth for possession of cannabis, alcohol and tobacco. Laytart: You are also working on a bill to create a Portable Cannabis Vendor License (PCV), a concept that you and I have been working on together. How is this proposal developing and do you feel the bill will be voted into law? Goins: I just got language today. I have been told I will get a hearing. That is a large part of the battle. The legislation will need a ⅔ vote which means we will have to work hard to reach every legislator. I hope for the best! Laytart: You are one of the hardest working and most heartfelt people in the cannabis industry. So, what's next for your mission?

A’Esha Goins: It’s always important to have a seat or create a seat at the table of those folks making the decisions. I’m looking forward to assisting in holding the CCB accountable to the commitment of equity and inclusion in the Nevada cannabis marketplace.

Goins: Whew! I am consulting on Del Lewis HB32 in Maryland, Coaching a few progressive organizations, I’m in Emerge and of course supporting the CORE Team of CEIC. Honestly, building an army (lol). Allowing myself to enjoy serving my community while investing in those who are coming after me. I get to do this work and it is always my pleasure to serve.

Laytart: How is your bill BDR 360 to reduce punishment for juvenile possession going?

To find out more about A’Esha Goins and to help support her mission visit:

CANNABUSHI An Infusion Series

2ml Grand Daddy Purp terpenes from True Terpenes Yellow Starburst candy We are going to keep this simple and easy for all the stoners. Start by melting your marshmallows in a pot. Add the cannabutter and .5g of distillate. Keep mixing so you don't burn the marshmallows. Low and slow always works for me. Add your Fruity Pebbles and remove from heat. Two and a half cups of Pebbles should work great. Once combined, put off to the side to chill to room temperature. We will come back to this later. This month we are making infused bbq chicken wings and a nice "baked" potato. This doesn't taste like chicken, but it's so good. April Fool's! This is a Fruity Pebbles edible. Or maybe, chocolate chicken. Wait, what? Maybe it’s a Grand Daddy Purp ice cream potato. It may look like something else but I assure you this is a hibiscus THC infused chocolate covered Fruity Pebbles edible. The flavor, along with some milk…. omg, phenomenal! Served along with a peanut butter chocolate potato covered in a Grand Daddy Purp whipped cream, with a dash of green sugar sprinkles to mimic chives, and a finishing touch of melted lemon starburst. Wow, you could have "fooled" me! Now let's start with some shenanigans. Life is short, have fun with your food.

Fool's Gold 2 oz. infused hibiscus simple syrup 1 bottle of light Karo syrup 1 box of Fruity Pebbles 1 small bag of small marshmallows 1 pint of peanut butter chocolate ice cream ½ stick cannabutter 1g THC distillate 1 pound of chocolate melting wafers 1 cup of whipping cream ½ tsp vanilla extract 3 tsp powdered sugar

58

Grab a nice sized ball of your ice cream and create a potato, a cream-ato. Put it in the freezer and remember that this entire thing can be infused. So, if you feel like infusing it all, go for it. Mix one cup whipping cream, .5g distillate (warmed), powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and Grand Daddy Purp terpenes in a whip cream canister. Shake it like a Polaroid picture. You have to ensure that the distillate is mixed into the cream. Load a charger inside and put it in the fridge for now. Grab some gloves and start making the now cooled Fruity Pebbles treats into the shape of chicken legs, or drumsticks. Once completed, place in the freezer to chill. Melt down your chocolate and pour half of the infused hibiscus simple syrup. Mix thoroughly. While wearing gloves, grab the Fruity Pebble chicken and cover it in the infused chocolate. Place in the freezer to cool once more. Have fun playing with your food. Allow this to harden and let the chocolate setup. Mix the rest of your infused hibiscus simple syrup, 3 oz of Karo syrup, and a dash of chocolate sauce, plus now squeeze some whip cream out of the chilled canister. Allow this to be thinner, we will use it as a drizzle. Now that everything is ready. Let's get to plating. Grab your potato and give

it a heaping "dollop" of whipped cream. Grab a yellow Starburst candy and hit it with a torch to "melt" your butter. Sprinkle the green "chive" sugar on top. Place the chocolate chicken and then drizzle your lighter mixture over the top and enjoy.

COOKING WITH CANNABIS Elevated Dinner Party >>> BY CHEF GARRICK UMLAND

As we look to celebrate our favorite date, 4/20, we also come to our favorite course- dessert! At this point in your elevated dinner party, your guests should be feeling amazing. With your expert guidance your guests have dined on some amazing courses, and we will not disappoint with a sweet finish. Throughout this guide we have discussed the importance of reading your guests, informing your guests about what is to come, and how to keep them without overdoing it on your delicious, infused cuisine. It is important to remember, you can utilize CBD to help balance out the effects of THC in your food. In this final offering you will have two different options for your guests to choose from, or maybe they want both, this is perfectly fine. To get ready for the dessert course make sure to have the following on hand: THC infused sugar, THC infused butter, CBD infused sugar, and CBD infused tincture. The first dessert is a Mango and Passion Fruit Granita. If you are not familiar with granita, it is so simple- think of Italian Ice, except fruity. In this dish you have many different options for infusion. You can make it straightforward and infuse to order with either CBD or THC tincture. This will allow you to make the infusion more personal for your guests. If they are feeling like they have had enough THC, give the dish a nice drizzle of the CBD tincture. On the other hand, if they would like a stronger infusion, go heavy on the THC tincture drizzle. You can also use infused sugar to make a simple syrup for a more rounded infusion. Providing your guests know what they are getting into, I prefer to use the infused simple syrup, again, either THC or CBD. A nice way to garnish this dish is taking a decarboxylated nugget of either THC or CBD flower, and using a micro plane, give a nice shaving over the top of the dish. This recipe calls for using Passion Fruit, however if that doesn’t fit with the previous courses, go ahead and use a fruit that better compliments the meal. For the second recipe, we will be making an old school molten chocolate cake. This is another really easy dessert to make and infuse. Right from the start you can use infused sugar to keep the infusion light or for a richer infusion, use cannabutter. Both items can be swapped out for CBD if you so wish. The richness of the chocolate helps to accentuate the herbalness you get from the infused butter. You can always serve this with a nice scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. This dish will require you to cook it while serving the main course. When your guests are about ¾ of the way through their main courses, you will want to prepare the oven and cook the molten chocolate cake. It is best to give this a try before the day of the dinner party so you can get the timing down perfectly.

Passion Fruit Granita Yield: 6 portions Prep Time: 30 Minutes Total Time: 5 Hours

INGREDIENTS: 3 cups mango puree 1 1/2 cups passion fruit pulp 2 cups water 1/2 cup simple syrup - infused DIRECTIONS: Whisk all the ingredients together in a medium sized baking dish. Taste and add more simple syrup if you like your granita on the sweet side. Place in a casserole dish, pouring the mixture into a thin layer, depending on the dish size, two dishes may work best. Freeze for at least 4 hours until solid or overnight. When ready to serve, scrape the granita with a fork so it resembles ice shavings. Once made, this granita will keep for 3 days in the freezer. Garnish with the shavings of decarboxylated flower.

Molten Chocolate Cake Yield: 6 portions Prep Time: 60 Minutes Total Time: 1 ½ Hours

INGREDIENTS: 8 1/2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces - Infused 5 large eggs 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar – Infused 1/2 cup cocoa powder DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 10-inch diameter tart pan (at least one inch deep) or a 9-inch diameter springform pan, place on a foil-lined baking tray, and set aside. If you choose, you can use small individual sized aluminum cupcake forms. Place chocolate and butter in a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl and heat until completely melted, stirring often to avoid scorching the chocolate. Meanwhile, place eggs in a bowl and run under warm tap water for a few minutes until eggs no longer feel cool to the touch. Crack eggs into the bowl. Add sugar. Using the mixer's whisk attachment, whip the eggs and sugar on medium speed until mixture is light and thick and falls in a ribbon from whisk - about 2 minutes. Add cocoa powder and mix on low speed until combined. Add melted chocolate mixture and mix until well combined. Pour batter into prepared pan, and bake for 12 minutes. Rotate tray front to back and bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, until surface of the cake is just firm to the touch but still looks wet in the center and has a bit of jiggle. Place on a cooling rack and cool to room temperature. Garrick Umland is a chef, cannabis connoisseur, and hospitality professional specializing in product and brand development.
