Cultivating Music, Cannabis and Love

izzy Wright opens minds and enlightens listeners with lyrical nuggets of wisdom in each bar Wright’s music has grown with him and with me, as I have followed his career for the past decade. It’s beautiful to see him recognized in the entertainment world as well as in the cannabis community, where his passion runs deep. Each strain and each sound received from Wright is a blessing in itself. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with him to talk about cannabis, music and what inspires him. Modest Jones: Hey birthday twin, how ya been? Dizzy Wright: Peace Queen. I’m great and blessed. It seems that you are too.

Dizzy: I’m always gonna be coming with new strains… right now we are about to start pumping out this new strain called “Lowrider”. I had to revamp it and get it to where it needed to be but I think the concept of having a dope name like “Lowrider” is something that people can smoke and feel like they are relaxing. Chillin’, like they’re in a lowrider. MJ: Yea. That sounds pretty dope. What's your favorite strain? Dizzy: Right now, my favorite strain is Groovy OG. MJ: Oh yea.

MJ: Yes, thank you. You have some great cannabis strains out right now. What made you choose Redwood Cultivation to grow your brand?

Dizzy: I’m enjoying the Groovy OG a lot.

Dizzy: Quality. The quality of the weed. And, the professionalism of the Redwood team. I was looking for a company that I could grow with. I liked the strains that they were making at the time and I wanted to be a part of their growth. I also wanted to provide some of the best weed that represented the strains I like to smoke.

Dizzy: I love it. Honestly, I’m making a lot of new music right now and it’s put me in a really creative space.

MJ: What are your thoughts on how the industry has grown?

Dizzy: Yeah. The Groovy OG and The Smooth Funk are my go-to’s.

Dizzy: I think it’s incredible! I still would like to see it be federally legal but I love where it has grown to. I love that more states are jumping on board. Sometimes, you go to one city and you’re considered a criminal but then the next city you visit, everything is all good. I like that it's kinda slowing down a little bit. I just like where it’s going and I’m happy to be a part of it. MJ: Feels like a dream. What changes would you like to see for cannabis? I mean, I feel like you kinda answered a little bit with your last answer. Dizzy: Yea. I want it to be federally legal. I don’t want anyone to be considered a criminal for the plant, for the good herbs. I would just like to see us become more like Amsterdam, especially here in Las Vegas. Whether it’s coffee shops, weed lounges, or whatever it is… You know a place where people can go and smoke cannabis, hang out, and have a cool little drink, and not be considered a damn criminal. To not have to sneak to the parking lot to roll something up, or smoke in their car and have security coming over messing with you.

12

that. Any new strains for us to look forward to?

MJ: All great points. I think we've all had enough of

MJ: That's my favorite strain too.

MJ: That's one of the things I like about it. Is that your go-to strain? From your line? The Groovy OG?

MJ: What does Still Movin' mean to you? Dizzy: Still Movin' is a positive affirmation. MJ: I like that. Dizzy: It just means that I have to wake up every day and remind myself that I have the chance to get something done… So, how are you going to utilize it? Ya know? I think we are all blessed to be able to wake up and have some of the qualities that we have that allow us to go out and change the world. So, Still Movin’, to me is just waking up every day and utilizing the gifts that I’ve been blessed with and finding different ways to dish that kind of energy out to other people. And maybe along the way, I will run into like-minded people and, who knows… maybe we can make some money or something. MJ: That sounds really good; like a perfect world. What does living in your purpose mean to you? Dizzy: Living in my purpose… I think living within your purpose is understanding you. Self-awareness is critical. Sometimes we give all of our credit for growth to other entities. And, we don’t rely

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

THE LATEST

on self-growth and don’t understand… We’d rather understand something else than understand ourselves. So I think living within your purpose is finding a way to balance it out and try to understand yourself. And then, go with your gut and try to have fun doing it. MJ: What's your ultimate, long-term goal? Dizzy: My ultimate long-term goal is just to make sure this isn’t all for nothing. When it’s all said and done at least have something to show for it.The long-term goal is to have something to show for my hard work that I put in while I’m here. MJ: I'm into this. Tell me about your upcoming projects. Dizzy: Tour starts very soon and I’m working on a lot of music. I’m just kinda rolling the music out. Things have changed now. I’m still gonna drop projects but you kinda gotta work the system a little differently. So, I will just say that I have a lot of new music coming out, especially produced by Reezy. Shout out to Reezy. We’re back on the road. We are back outside. Tour is in full action and that’s pretty much the next move. MJ: How is tour-life treating you? Dizzy: It’s treating me great. I’m just humbled to be back out there doing what I love to do. Being in front of like-minded people that enjoy my music and I get to go out there and broadcast my talent. I can’t ask for anything more. MJ: What was your favorite moment on tour? Dizzy: I think my favorite moment was the very first show,

the very beginning, just walking out on stage and hearing the fans for the very first time. It was exhilarating! It was a reminder of why I do what I do. It just felt empowering to me. MJ: This tour is a big one, your ten year anniversary. What's the energy surrounding that for you? Dizzy: For me, it’s like the ending of an era and the beginning of something new… MJ: Ooooh! You wanna delve into that a little bit? Dizzy: I think, as a creative artist, I’ve just done everything the way that I wanted to do it in this music industry, to the best of my capabilities. Being an independent artist and not having to go out and allow somebody else to control my creative direction and my vision or the things that I want to talk about as I was learning new things and growing. I’m blessed, happy, and humbled that I was able to grow with my friends, with my fans over the last decade and not just be a robot of music… MJ: I love that you used that word, "not a robot." Dizzy: Now, I want to grow at my own pace and incorporate it in my music differently, and enjoy life and have more fun. Create more of an energetic environment around what I got going on. I’m spreading my wings a little more this next decade and I’m excited about it! MJ: That's dope! Please let our readers know how to support you and where to follow you. Dizzy: You can find me on Instagram @dizzyhippy, and on Snapchat @kingdizzyhippy

>>> An Interview with Lindsey Duesler Growing Excellence at Redwood

Founded by Harris Rittoff and Cherry Development in 2014, Redwood is a Nevada licensed cultivation facility led by company President, Paul Schloss. Redwood has a 20,000 square foot, state of the art cultivation facility with a fully automated fertilization, drip irrigation, HVAC, lighting, and Co2 system. We have worked with Redwood since its inception and closely with Director of Operations, Lindsey Duesler since 2018. I recently had the pleasure of touring the newly expanded facility and sat down with Lindsey to talk about all things Redwood. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Thank you for allowing me to tour your facility, it looks awesome. You've been with Redwood for a while now. What year did you start and what position did you start in? LINDSEY DUESLER: I started in August 2017, right after recreational began, as a part time trimmer. I was a stay at home mom after my second son and I honestly needed to get out of the house and away from the kiddos for a bit. Little did I know, it would blossom into where I am today. SS: Wow! You really did start from the bottom. Tell me about your position now and what it entails. LD: Oh boy...a little bit of everything! My current title is Director of Operations. There's not a lot I'm not involved in. A lot of what I handle is post harvest. I oversee several departments, including trim, packaging, vault, order staging, and distribution. Bringing orders in and getting them out to our customers. I also handle brand relations (marketing, events, reporting, etc.) Pretty much anything that needs to get done, I'm your girl. SS: Over the years, Redwood has added quite a few brands. What

16

brands are currently housed under the Redwood umbrella? LD: Currently, we are very proud growers for Cookies, Tyson 2.0, Cheech and Chong, Dizzy Wright, Willie's Reserve, and of course our own Redwood brand. We have several others in the pipeline as well. SS: I am assuming that the addition of more brands was what led to your cultivation expansion. Tell me about that. LD: Absolutely! The building we are in wasn't completely built out when we got started and our demand outweighed what we had available. We needed more space to continue bringing in new genetics for ourselves and our brands. We went from five flower rooms to twelve. Expansion was always in the plan and we are so proud to see all the hard work come to fruition. SS: Redwood also recently began work under their production license/brand Mesa Oils - tell me about that. What products are made under Mesa Oils? LD: Mesa Oils is our sister company and we are currently making our Tyson 2.0 sauce vapes and Mike Bites gummies there. We have a lot of plans for our production and we are just getting started! SS: Any new brands or collaborations coming up in the future? LD: We are very excited to be bringing 22Red into our family of brands next. SS: What is one change you would like to see made within the cannabis industry? LD: Cannabis education. We still see a lot

of THC driven customers and I'd honestly love to see more knowledge being shared with our customers. There is so much more to this plant than THC. I will forever preach about terpenes to anyone who will listen. SS: Are there any ways that being a woman in the industry has empowered or hindered you? LD: In the beginning, I didn't see a ton of ladies in the industry and it gave me the drive to push harder and prove that I can hang. Now, I am very proud of the presence of women in our industry. Many of our leaders at Redwood are women! SS: Any favorite Redwood strains? LD: One of my all time favorite strains we have grown is Sweet Tea. It tastes just like an Arnold Palmer! SS: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? LD: I see myself still going strong for Redwood. I am extremely fortunate to be in a profession that I truly enjoy, with a company I absolutely love. It's not all fun and games. It's a lot of hard work but I love a challenge and I look forward to contributing to the continued success of Redwood. SS: How can readers follow what Redwood is doing? (social media/ web) LD: You can visit our website at redwoodcultivation.com for a virtual tour. On Instagram @redwoodmj for beautiful photos of our grow, flower, and products. Budtender of the Month

like this because it makes the overall experience a little bit more personal and you get to really build that bond together.

Las Vegas

Has your smoking habits changed since becoming a budtender?

JEBEDIAH EUGINO Jebediah Eugino is a budtender at Exhale in Las Vegas, NV. He uses his self-described "goofy self" to put customers at ease and he uses his wealth of knowledge to find the right products for them. Jebediah is a quick riser in the industry and he knows that the sky's the limit.

Rolling up and smoking flower will forever have that specific type of warmth in my lungs and heart that can never be beat. Getting into the industry has definitely allowed me to spoil myself by being able to choose flower with great terpene profiling, high THC, and amazing flavors!

What has been the most rewarding part of your budtending career?

How do you stay up to date on the latest products and cannabis information?

The most rewarding part of my job definitely has to be the fact that I serve/educate all consumers while being able to just be my natural self. Being a pothead from the small island of Guam, laws and regulations on cannabis back home are completely different. Being able to do what I do for work is really where a lot of the passion and motivation comes from. Making money where you have a lot of fun has to be one of the most rewarding things out there for sure. In addition, I also really love all the events that the industry holds and all the people you get to connect with.

Product knowledge is key when being a budtender. Being present and participating in vendor educational presentations held by brand ambassadors is how I usually absorb the latest information on newer products. Networking and social media is also another way I stay aware of events and news in general within the industry.

Budtender at EXHALE

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since being in the cannabis industry? The most surprising thing and one of the best things I’ve learned is that there’s endless growth in this industry. There are so many different aspects of the business that you can really choose to educate and apply yourself. What kind of challenges do you face as a budtender? A day to day challenge as a budtender for me would have to be when some consumers are a little bit narrow-minded and have a specific perspective about cannabis products. I honestly like situations

32

What is your favorite topic to educate a customer on? My favorite topic to educate customers on is the overall potency and reading the profile of a product. I love teaching customers that you don’t necessarily need the highest THC percentage when they come in looking for “some gas” or “fire”. Do you have any favorite cultivators? A few reputable cultivators that I will never hesitate to give my money to would be Nature’s Chemistry, Green Life Productions, GT Flower, State Flower, and Trendi. What are you been smoking on? I can honestly say I am biased to both terpinolene and myrcene. So if there is any strain with a significant amount of either terpene, I will definitely buy it. For example the Crazy Glue from Trendi I picked up has 22mg of myrcene!

Budtender of the Month

>>>INTERVIEWS BY rocky hernandez jorrell ellis

Reno

Nick hampton Budtender at Rise Nick Hampton is a budtender at Rise Northtowne in Reno, Nevada and is looking to make a positive impact on the Nevada cannabis industry. His cool and calm demeanor puts his guests at ease and allows him to educate very effectively. What was your first industry job? I started in the industry as a budtender at Reef. What has been the most rewarding part of your budtending career? Seeing the look of relief and excitement people get when they walk in the door. Knowing we make a positive difference in people's lives is pretty cool. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since being in the cannabis industry? Hearing how much products cost in different states. What types of challenges do you face as a budtender? Sometimes it does get very monotonous like any other retail job, but that's not a bad problem to have

about it.

kinds of products are going to help in different situations. For example, some pain is better treated with topicals, and some pain is better treated with edibles/tinctures. How to communicate complex ideas like the different ways to extract concentrates and how each one will affect you to someone who knows nothing

How do you stay up to date on the latest products and cannabis information? Looking online mostly. Also, word travels fast in the cannabis industry. What is your favorite topic to educate a customer on? Terpenes. They were one of my favorite things I learned about when I got into the industry, and a lot of times just a natural first step for someone who wants to learn more about cannabis. It's fun seeing people get excited about a strain they know they're going to like because the terpenes are just right. What’s your favorite way to consume? Flower and concentrates. Do you have any favorite cultivators?

Have your smoking habits changed since becoming a budtender?

Probably Nature's Chemistry.

I definitely pay more attention to terpenes and how each product is tested rather than just looking at the THC and price.

What have you been smoking on? A lot of Trendi disposables, to be honest. The Pineapple Fanta one they did with Nature's Chemistry was dope.

Corvain Cooper's Fight Against Broken Drug Laws

It’s an objective truth that’s verified time and time again with every survey or piece of research published on the incredibly broken American criminal justice system, but the racial disparities within this socioeconomically damaging system can’t be understated. Among the many reasons why the criminal justice system is both horribly broken yet unnecessarily powerful is the drug sentencing laws across the American states that have been a main component in why the incarcerated population has ballooned over the decades and exceeds two million people.

number in the prison industrial complex. One such story of a (now) business owner and strong cannabis activist who’s had his freedom taken away numerous times is Mr. Corvain Cooper. Having a strong interest in creative subjects such as fashion from a young age, the South Central Los Angeles native and attendee of Hollywood High School’s performing arts program began working at clothing stores after graduating high school to pursue that passion. Even more, Cooper created the Old Money clothing line and in a matter of months, the brand had over 10,000 customers.

With just cannabis possession cases alone, Black Americans are nearly four times as likely to be arrested for cannabis possession according to an analysis done by the American Civil Liberties Union. Even well into the early years of legal cannabis in states such as Colorado and Washington, cannabis arrests continued to occur along with the heavy societal penalties that come with any drug conviction.

While employed in this field however, Mr. Cooper did have a few minor possession infractions that while ultimately victimless, did result in two convictions that would unfortunately count towards California’s Three Strikes Law.

“There were more marijuana arrests in 2018 than in 2015, despite the fact that eight states legalized marijuana for recreational use or decriminalized marijuana possession in that timeframe.” The very first key finding of this extensive report again stressed the blatantly clear racial disparities among cannabis arrests and convictions and how Black Americans in particular were exponentially more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession cases. “In every single state,” the 2020 report said, “Black people were more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession, and in some states, Black people were up to six, eight, or almost ten times more likely to be arrested. In 31 states, racial disparities were actually larger in 2018 than they were in 2010.” For every one of these mostly unnecessary arrests and convictions, there’s either a tragic story of someone who must now live with the social disadvantages of a criminal conviction or someone who’s unjustly had their freedom taken away only to become a

After serving a one year sentence in state prison for one of these related low-level possession convictions, Cooper secured a release in 2012. By then, Cooper had two young daughters and wished to focus more on his family and fashion entrepreneurship. Along with the already well-established Old Money brand, Cooper even opened a boutique named after his daughters- SC Clothing. In total, Cooper had successfully removed himself from the petty offenses of his younger years. In a similar way to the deeply philanthropic LA hip hop artist taken far too soon, Nipsey Hussle, Cooper used his businesses and entrepreneurial skills to promote reinvestment and philanthropy in his community. One such event involved a partnership with LA hip hop artist YG in which he gave away free pairs of jeans to local kids while another involved a 300-person concert at his boutique where all proceeds raised went to Mr. Cooper’s church. Who performed at this concert raising money for a church doing the Lord’s work in the otherwise socially disadvantaged community, you may ask? None other than Nipsey Hussle himself of course. Despite being removed from anything even close to illegal activities for over a year,

Corvain Cooper was arrested in 2013 on conspiracy to traffick an estimated 40 tons of cannabis from California to Charlotte, North Carolina. Due to the crossing of state lines while trafficking drugs, these charges were considered federal charges. “Conspiracy charges allow prosecutors to charge everyone involved in a drug supply operation for the same conduct, regardless of their individual role.” explains The Drug Policy Alliance in their video on Mr. Cooper’s case. For record, conspiracy charges simply mean that a defendant is tangentially connected enough to a drug trafficking operation for the charges to apply. Even worse, the package of cannabis that the charges were related to was intercepted back in 2009, four years before his arrest. And traumatically for his children, Cooper was cornered and arrested by federal agents while taking his 8-year-old daughter to a drill team competition. Although Cooper was extradited to North Carolina and offered a plea agreement of 10 to 20 years in exchange for testifying against his co-defendants, he exercised his right to trial. Cooper believed that with a jury of his peers along with his distant involvement in and the non-violent nature of the trafficking, he’d receive fair justice. Sadly though, Corvain Cooper was found guilty of conspiracy to traffick marijuana across state lines, money laundering and tax evasion in October of 2013. Due to the two previous non-violent convictions on Cooper’s record, he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole as part of the widely criticized Three Strikes Law, a staple of the widely damaging criminal penalty legislation known as the 1994 Crime Bill. Both signed into law by President Bill Clinton and crafted in the Senate by none other than former Delaware senator and current totally cognizant and not at all senile President Joe Biden, the 1994 Crime Bill was the exact opposite of anything even barely resembling criminal justice reform. In stark contrast to the mostly

unfulfilled criminal justice reform promises that the then 77-year-old Biden ran on during the 2020 election, these policies resulted in an explosion in both the federal and state prison populations.

Cooper was a young father with two daughters barely into their teenage years certainly made the Trump administration more sympathetic to his case for clemency.

Among its most draconian policies; the bill created 60 new death penalty offenses, removed opportunities for lower-income inmates to receive educational opportunities while incarcerated, established correctional “boot camps” for offending minors and gave $9.7 billion in funding for prisons while also hiring 100,000 more police officers on American streets. The Three Strikes policy that put Cooper in prison for nearly nine years was a provision of this bill that was revolutionary for nearly all the wrong reasons.

As he once again gained his freedom, Cooper has since dedicated his life to several causes relevant towards criminal justice reform and his community. Most importantly though, Cooper has used his fortunate freedom to become more than just an amazing father as he caught up on the many lost formative years for his two daughters that he missed due to his incarceration.

Even more tragically, Cooper was sent to a federal prison in Louisiana, far from any of his family members on the West Coast. To his credit, Cooper attempted multiple times to appeal his sentence, trying to classify the sentence as Cruel and Unusual Punishment forbidden under the 8th Amendment given the victimless nature of the offense. Yet, both the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and the Supreme Court denied his appeal. In 2015, a clemency petition to the Obama Administration was denied without any explanation despite the 44th President’s Administration offering clemency and pardons to nearly 2,000 people during Obama’s two terms. Several of these cases were very similar to Mr. Cooper’s case in numerous ways, mainly that 400 of those pardon recipients were also given life sentences. And although President Trump appointed a Keebler Elf from Alabama that despised everything about cannabis as his first Attorney General, the game show host turned President pardoned dozens of non-violent drug offenders in January 2021 during his round of lastminute presidential pardons. Luckily for Cooper, who by this point had served almost nine years at a prison in Louisiana for a crime that essentially affected nobody, was one of Trump’s last-minute pardons of non-violent drug offenders. According to Chief Operating Officer of the social justice-focused brand 40 Tons Anthony Alegrete, the fact that

Among the many incredible adventures he’s experienced in the 18 months since his release, Cooper founded and became Chief Brand Ambassador of the 40 Tons clothing and accessory brand. “40 Tons was created about a year before Corvain got out of prison in an attempt to raise awareness to get him out of prison.” explained Alegrete. “It started off as just clothing and accessories.” Given the alleged 40 tons of cannabis that Cooper was convicted of conspiring to traffic along with cannabis businesswoman Evelyn LaChapelle and cannabis activist Natalia Wade. “That’s where we got the name from. We figured we’d turn a negative into a positive. 40 is also a relevant number in the Black community. From ‘40 acres and a mule’ to 40,000 prisoners or so are still locked up over cannabis. 40 tons also represent heaviness. What’s a life sentence? It’s something heavy. It’s heavy on the families, heavy on the kids, heavy on the moms and it’s heavy on the person having to serve time. 40 Tons has more than one meaning.” “We represent the voice of the voiceless. We represent the people that put their lives on the line to make this plant what it is today.” More than simply cannabis policy reform, the 40 Tons brand is dedicated to both raising awareness and eradicating the many problems that still plague the American criminal justice system. One such notable example being recidivism, or people being released from prison yet going right back to being incarcerated

for a variety of reasons. “Our brand is more than just a clothing brand. We’re a pipeline to help people get careers and we’re an anti-recidivism organization. It’s one thing to get someone out of prison, but it’s another thing to keep them out. How exactly do you keep them out? Give them a career, an education, an opportunity. Built into our brand is social impact, so we’re all about giving back and helping. We take our profits and invest them into social good. We’re all about figuring out ways to stop the next Corvain Cooper for life. 40 Tons is staying true to this message with events such as their “Canna Get a 2nd Chance” Cannabis Career Conferences to promote diversity among BIPOC cannabis employees among some of California’s most prominent cannabis providers and Expungement Clinics to assist in the oftentimes arduous and confusing process of receiving an expungement of a criminal charge. Furthermore, 40 Tons has partnered with the Harvard of cannabis education, Oaksterdam University, to provide scholarships for cannabis education to underserved communities. As for the future of the brand, Alegrete promises to not only stay true to the reformative pillars that serve as the 40 Tons mission but also to keep inspiring activists to stay active in raising awareness and rallying for change to ensure that harrowing stories of judicial injustice such as Corvain Cooper become an obsolete memory of America’s draconian past.

Connecticut-based jam band Goose is set to grace the Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas stage for a one-night engagement on Saturday, Aug. 20, celebrating the announcement of their upcoming third studio album “DRIPFIELD.” Known for their steady creative output and eclectic style, the rockin’ quintet quickly saw exponential success thanks to their rapidly expanding fan base. James Goodwin, promises a departure from their stylistic roots, featuring arpeggiated synths and otherworldly vocals with a thunderous rhythm section. “We are eternally grateful to our Goose family for the support to push our boundaries and explore music in some truly beautiful spaces this summer!” says vocalist, keys, guitarist Peter Anspach. Tickets for Goose at Brooklyn Bowl Las Vegas start at $39.50 and are on sale now at brooklynbowl.com/las-vegas. DIZZY WRIGHT’S Groovy OG

I fired up the old record player and listened to “Feelin Groovy” by Simon & Garfunkel a few times in a row. Yes, I was feelin’ groovy then, and still am about a week later. This colorful flower is very well grown and as dense as my skull. Yeah, baby. I'm way up in the clouds, floating away like a tiny smoke bubble. I cannot be popped. Groovy OG cannot be stopped.

Low Rider is not gassy and doesn’t produce a crazy powerful high… unless I smoke a lot of it. Alert without limonene, and I love that it's low in caryophyllene (for my throat). Low Rider is light but it gets a bit heavier the more I smoke.

Strain Names do they matter? By: Sarah Schwefel As a patient treating an array of symptoms with cannabis, I often get asked to name my favorite strain. Which one is for pain, for appetite, and so forth. Unfortunately, I do not have an answer to give. I have my favorite terpenes, but strains- not so much. When I first tried legal cannabis and realized the medicinal value it could bring, Grape Stomper was my miracle strain. It was the one that allowed me to live my life with less pain than I could have ever imagined at one point. It was the only flower I bought for many months, and though sometimes it did not work as much as the preroll prior, I never differed. One day I went to the dispensary, and they were out of my beloved strain. Tears filled my eyes and I felt heartbroken, afraid to return to life before cannabis. Thankfully, I had a knowledgeable budtender who explained I just needed a high myrcene strain. My immediate thought was, a high what?! I went home with the strain TK Star Dog that day, hopeful it would help, and it did! From that day on my passion for terpenes began because the truth of the matter is, the strain name does not matter, but the terpenes along with the cannabinoids do. Terpenes are often credited solely for the flavor and scent of our cannabis, but they are so much more than that. Terpenes have an array of therapeutic benefits and dictate the experience and effects one has from their cannabis. Every cannabis strain has a different terpene profile and within that, each plant can have variances on the terpenes and cannabinoids, once harvested. You may notice sometimes your favorite strains may affect you a little differently. That is because of the variances in terpenes. For example, through trial and error I have learned my body needs at least 5 mg of myrcene to be able to get out of bed and live the best I can. Some days my beloved Grape Stomper had 10mg of myrcene and some batches on other days would yield less than 2mg, making my cannabis work less in the way I needed it to. Cannabis is a plant and though growers have some control, it is impossible to have the exact same harvest within every strain. One week you may love Wedding Cake, and the next week it may bring an uncomfortable feeling because of the variances in terpenes from plant to plant. So how can we use this information to our advantage next time we are at a dispensary? Thankfully in Nevada, the state requires companies to label the top three dominant terpenes allowing us to accurately pick the experience we desire from our cannabis. When figuring out what terpenes are best for you, it is important to take note of the experience a particular product brought you and what terpenes are in the product. Everyone is different and what may work for some, may not work for others. Many sedative strains are great for chronic pain patients, as they help relax the body and muscles, and may not necessarily make them sleepy. Though someone without chronic pain may find a sedative strain only works for them at night. Once we learn what terpenes we prefer, we

50

open ourselves up to a wide range of strains that will deliver the effects we desire through the power of terpenes. In North America, there are eight main terpenes primarily found in cannabis, though over one hundred have been identified in nature. Below are the eight main terpenes and the effects they will deliver. Myrcene Sedative • Muscle relaxant • Pain relief/Anti-inflammatory Neuroprotectant Limonene Uplifting/Energizing • Reduces anxiety and depression Pain relief/Anti-inflammatory • Supports Digestion Humulene Uplifting • Appetite Suppressant • Anti-inflammatory Caryophyllene Sedative • Sleep Support • Pain Relief/Anti-inflammatory Anti-anxiety Terpinolene Uplifting • Antioxidant • Anti-inflammatory/Pain relief Pinene Relaxing • Neuroprotectant • Mood Support • Anti-inflammatory Linalool Calming/Sedative • Anti-inflammatory/Pain relief Reduces stress and anxiety • Neuroprotectant Ocimene Energizing/Stimulating • Antiviral • Antioxidant Anti-inflammatory

TERPENES AND MEMORY How Fragrance Affects Our Emotions Memories connecting scent to emotion come to us courtesy of the Limbic System – the sentimental side of human physiology connected to our psychology. Can a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade on a warm summer day trigger a childhood memory of happier times? The Limbic system is a complex structure located beneath the cerebral cortex within the brain supporting emotion, behavior, motivation, and long-term memory. Our emotional life depends on this system, and when triggered by a scent, can bring back a gamut of emotions and feelings - including lemons on a warm summer day. vIt's why you choose with your nose when selecting fragrant flower in a dispensary. What are your favorite fragrances? Chances are the scent is a recurring theme in your life. Why? Because humans have a symbiotic relationship to plants and it starts with the way they smell. You might be choosing lemon scented weed with your heart and mind because it reminds you of a happy childlike, carefree summer day. But, your body may be choosing it subconsciously because it craves the benefits behind the scent. The limbic system was created to purposefully seduce, to draw us near to what we need. It’s a seduction that humans have been graciously accepting since Eve handed Adam that apple. The unsaid part of the story is, Eve also must have liked the way Adam smelled, compliments of pheromones. Pheromones are a unique subset of chemical signals first defined in 1959 by scientists P. Karlson and M. Luscher, as substances secreted to the outside of an individual and then received by a second individual, in which they release a specific reaction. In other words, pheromones can make or break a love match. We can draw those we love as close to us as a fragrant rose, if their scent aligns with ours - with love as beneficial and crucial to our well-being as the beneficial compounds of a plant to keep us healthy. It’s all connected. Never ignore the power of your

52

nose in life, love and at the bud counter. For the Love of Lemons Terpenes are where the fragrance is found in plants.Terpenes are also where much of the beneficial compounds are, or where the medicine is found. Large and varied types of hydrocarbons, terpenes are made up of hydrogen and carbon. These compounds are the main component of plant resins or essential oils, and why we are compelled to bring fingers to our noses after cutting up fragrant bud, or chopping up ginger to cook with, or when a rose beckons us near. Do you love lemons? That means one of your favorite terpenes is limonene (D-Limonene). You can also find it in cannabis cultivars, citrus, and some fragrant and beneficial herbs, such as lemon balm or lemon eucalyptus. Why do you love lemon so much? Because somehow, through the magic of nature, your body knows you need limonene in your system for healing and homeostasis - or to help create a place where illness can not dwell. Terpene and cannabinoid writer, Curt Robbins, detailed for Eaze.com, “Of the 20 thousands terpenes found in nature, and the 200 that may manifest in a particular strain of cannabis, limonene is one of the major players. This terpene sometimes constitutes up to 16 percent of the volume of a particular sample of cannabis.” The Magic of Plants As detailed in How Stuff Works.com, the limbic system isn’t solely all about intoxicating fragrance, memory and romance. Our limbic system is said to be essential to our survival in finding food and sustenance, and selfpreservation. Research tells us that 75 percent of all emotions processed every day are connected to smell, with humans 100 times more likely to recall something due to their sense of smell over sight, hearing or touch. The limonene scent you chose at the pot shop has benefits that go way beyond the memory

Daily Dose BY SHARON lETTS

of a sun-filled summer day. Limonene can uplift and destress. It’s listed as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, and heart-disease-fighting properties. Limonene is also said to reduce appetite. And while high tetrahydrocannabinol or THC cultivars are said to cause the munchies, cultivars heavy in limonene might just curb the urge to snack. Those who still may be stuck on the Sativa/ Indica dilemma, please know, it’s the limonene giving you a lift, not the Sativa. It’s the terpene profile you need to pay attention to, not the THC. Meaning, if you suffer from depression, a nice limonene cultivar might be helpful. Other terpenes that treat depression by lifting endorphins and creating dopamine in the brain are pinene, also found in rosemary, pine needles, and black pepper; and linalool, also found in lavender and rosewood oils. Cultivars heavy in limonene and pinene terpenes are O.G. Kush, Sour Diesel, Super Lemon Haze, Durban Poison, Jack Herer, and Jack the Ripper. Cultivars heavy in linalool are Granddaddy Purple, Do Si Dos, Lavender, and Kosher Kush. Always check the breakdown of a cultivar’s terpenes and never go by THC count alone. Too much THC can trigger anxiety that can lead to depression. Too much THC can trigger negative disorder symptoms like neurosis and psychosis. Our bodies know what we need, and our noses are the gateway. Follow your nose to health and happiness. Inforgraphic on the following page provided by Goldleaf Ltd. ASK MJ

Dear MJ, I’ve heard that CBD works for anxiety but none of the CBD I've tried calms me down. I don't think it works for me. What should I do? Sincerely, Anxious in the City Dear Anxious in the City, Make sure the CBD you're consuming is full spectrum. If it is, maybe give some thought to trying a 1:1 which will add more THC into the mix. Sometimes I need some THC to activate my CBD for better results. A knowledgeable budtender at your dispensary can help you determine the CBD:THC ratio that best suits you (ie. how many milligrams of CBD/THC you prefer in each serving.) From a more spiritual standpoint, you can also meditate prior to consumption and set your intentions for your work with the cannabis plant. Detoxing your body with water, fruit, and herbs may also assist with achieving better results from your CBD. CBD bath soaks work really nicely for me so it may also be in the way that you are consuming. A little tincture under the tongue can go a long way. Another one of my favorite ways to utilize CBD is by rubbing a balm or salve on a pressure point and specifically medicating the area of concern I hope this helps!

>>>>>Let's Talk with Tee Smell & Vision Sensory Systems

Why Researchers Think Cannabis May Cause Dependency Smell and vision are both senses that are used during cannabis consumption. Whether using it medicinally or not, the same factors exist during the experience. The aromas of the cannabis flower activate senses, while terpenes are one of the most volatile organic compounds (have high vapor pressure at room temperature) found in plant floral volatiles. The theory that the smell of cannabis alone may entice a person to crave it once smelled, may have some scientific explanation behind it. Vision also plays a role as one consumes cannabis. Perhaps, similar experiences with craving occurs that can lead one to consume cannabis. A group of researchers in Seattle, Washington held a study with multiple cues in which participants were shown images of cannabis and also provided the smell of cannabis flower to see if there was any neural activity and what portions of the brain were activated. This means that researchers have reason to believe that not only vision but also the smell of cannabis may activate certain areas of the brain (Kleinhans et al., 2020). This theory provides some insight and explanation on if these two senses (smell and sight) have an influence on the link between consumers that are frequent users and cannabis use disorder. This also leads researchers to believe that when senses are triggered by cues, there is a strong possibility that cannabis use disorder may result in consumers who have frequent, long-term cannabis use. Thus, there are dependency risks for consumers who use it frequently. So, Kleinhans et al.’s (2020) research group applied their hypothesis to see if there were signs of dependency for the group of participants who use cannabis frequently (the study was held on two participant groups). The first group were adults who are at risk for cannabis use disorder (CUD) due to frequent daily or weekly use. The second group of participants

56

were those not exposed to cannabis and do not have experience with it. The controlled group of non-cannabis users had no previous history of consumption. After showing the participants the images of cannabis flower and exposure to its aromas simultaneously, the fMRI results showed that the olfactory (smell) and visual receptor systems showed that there was activation in the brain in regard to reward systems such as craving. One of the few areas of the brain that showed strong activation were the structures that assimilate information (absorb and integrate) areas of the cerebral cortex and direct goal behaviors. These areas have also been shown in studies to exhibit neuroadaptations, which is the sensitization of exposure to drugs. The image of the cannabis cue showed more response in the amygdala and occipital cortex areas. Those participants who were in the exposure to cannabis use disorder group showed significant activity in the ventral tegmental area (also known as the VTA, with 65% of dopaminergic neurons), which is the area of the midbrain that deals with motivation, cognition, and reward. The VTA is the main source of dopamine in the central nervous system, showing that cravings intensified with the cue of smell added. Although cannabis has been shown in other studies to be less addictive in comparison to other addictive drugs, these findings found that there is still potential for addiction. Prior to the experiment (initial screening), all of the participants were tested for drug and alcohol use to ensure that there isn’t any previous drug or drinking behaviors, some of the CUD group participants showed alcohol levels in the second screening, right before the experiment. Thus, another limitation of this study that could have benefited is if the CUD group did not consume alcohol. Evidence from this study found that both olfactory and vision (multi-sensory) senses increased

the craving for cannabis. Some of the participants admitted to craving cannabis after the experiment was completed but most of the participants did not engage in consumption afterward. The results of this study’s findings exhibited a strong correlation of dependency by the sensory systems. Yet, current research is still needed as there are other factors such as terpenoids that still may potentially play a crucial role in the response of the reward system (what leads a person to crave). Terpenoids are naturally found in nature in such things as plants, trees, and fruits. Our naturalistic attraction to these therapeutic compounds may possibly be significant in the future of this form of research as our body’s endocannabinoid system is naturally intended to utilize and desire these compounds. My theory is that perhaps it is not just the scent and image alone in cannabis that entices one to consume, but the very chemical compounds that are in the scents (terpenes) which activate brain activity that are responsible. ASK A GROWER Dear Don, I am a medical patient here in Nevada and I really love high CBD cannabis strains but I just can't seem to find any. I would love to just grow my own but I don't know where to start. Any tips you can give me would be appreciated. Sincerely, John Hey John, While most commercial grows only prioritize growing high THC varieties, there are several breeders who have developed CBD dominant hybrid seed lines. Here are a few companies who have done extensive work with CBD hybrids: >>> Resin Seeds >>> Southern Humboldt Seeds Collective >>> SinCity Seeds

All cannabis seeds have 0% THC and can be legally purchased via online seed banks or local retail stores. I wish you the best of luck in your growing endeavors. Thanks Again,

Don

While cooking, wash your spinach and slightly break up the pieces. Add to the center in a slightly square shape and place some feta on top plus a pinch of the Italian seasoning. During this cooking time you want to use a flat spatula to slightly lift the edges and gently shake the pan to make sure your egg does not stick.. After around 8-9 minutes, your egg should be cooked enough to fold and your spinach almost perfect. Grab a cheese grater and grate some Pecorino in there and a couple teaspoons of coconut oil….you deserve it lol. Now, begin to fold your omelet into a rectangle shape being careful not to break the egg. If you do, it’s ok. Sprinkle little pinches of your salt/pepper/Italian spices as you fold. NOW, flip that mother trucker over and drop those little pieces of Prosciutto into your pan, let it heat up as you place

your omelet onto a plate. Drizzle a little coconut oil from the pan and place your Prosciutto on top. Sprinkle more of your spices and then finish with your Pecorino Romano. Add a little love by sprinkling a dash of fresh parsley. Chef Chris Rodarte aka CannaBushi Chris is a five star sushi chef and inventor of the first THC/CBD infused dessert sushi roll in.
