editor’s note This month we celebrate LOVE. Love of ourselves, love of one another and best of all, love of this plant that we pay homage to every month! We nurture this plant so that we can treat our own ailments and in turn nurture ourselves. There are many people, some of whom pick up this magazine each month, that still do not understand the complexities and endless healing properties of cannabis. While watching the online Cannabis Health Summit that recently aired, I was fortunate enough to hear the ever encouraging Dale Sky Jones speak and what she said really struck home for me. She began by telling the story of how she evolved from corporate America in to the medical marijuana world as now chancellor of Oaksterdam University. She indicated that for many years she kept this new venture under wraps for fear of judgement, not even telling her own grandmother. Her story culminated with the death of her grandmother and the regret that came with it. Had she encompassed the courage to give her grandmother the information about medical cannabis that she knew to be true, her grandmother’s last days could have quite possibly been made more comfortable. Moral of her story? She encouraged everyone to tell their story and she is right. How can we expect to move this industry forward without speaking up and telling our stories? Some of us have healed major illnesses. Many of us have witnessed friends or family members that are veterans successfully treat their PTSD with cannabis. And yet, some of us believe that we partake recreationally without even realizing that the reduction of stress and the relaxation we are experiencing is also quite healing. You are doing your friends and family a disservice if you are not informing them of the medicinal qualities of this plant. Once informed, encourage them to do their own research to find out if cannabis is something they might benefit from. It’s not a cure-all, and oftentimes conventional medicine is also needed. In the coming months, Vegas Cannabis Magazine will be working in conjunction with local dispensaries to bring information and awareness about medical cannabis to our community. If you need information or are a new patient and just don’t know where to start, please feel free to stop by our office where we have many free resources available.

education Cannabis Deliver Us from Illness A Day in the Life of an Educated Stoner By Sharon Letts

(Author’s note: This essay is currently being made into a book on daily dosing.)

Cannabis use can be confusing. The failed war on drugs has ingrained negativity for the plant into the psyches of the average American for decades now, with the only enlightenment coming from those who have the insight and courage to experiment medicinally. When the plant helps, the stigma is broken and those who can are compelled to share. That’s my story. I was the stoner from the 70’s who ingested for pain, then cancer, then found the plant turned my health and life around for the better. I’m compelled to share. Patients write to me on a daily basis from all over the world asking for help. We now know that smoking alone won’t turn our illnesses around. Those who are still on prescription meds, smoking to alleviate myriad side effects from traditional treatments need more delivery methods from the plant. Following is a morning to night list of ways to get the medicine of the plant into your system.

Wake and Bake

Even the most arduous stoners insisting cannabis isn’t medicine are getting the benefits of the plant each time they smoke, warding off stroke, heart, and lung disease. If they are dealing with emotional or neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, or anything under the ever widening autistic spectrum, they will be unwittingly helped by just smoking. Those with chronic pain and stiffness have long known about medicating in the morning. For those that need a neurological lift there is nothing that compares to the ritual of cutting up bud and loading up the morning bowl. For the plant lifts endorphins like a morning jog, lifts you up out of bed and helps you to have a day. Smoking also enhances the use of prescription meds. So, if you are taking pain killers, know that you are getting a 35% increase in the efficacy just by

smoking cannabis. (Ingest the plant and get rid of the pills, but that’s another chapter.) For myself, smoking helps me be a productive human. Depression and agoraphobia are just two menopause/ thyroid disease issues I deal with on a daily basis, and smoking helps gets me off my duff and out into the world. If bronchial issues from carbon keep you from enjoying smoking, a vaporizer will do the trick, giving relief for Asthma and COPD patients – replacing steroid inhalers. I go back and forth between vaping and smoking – getting pure medicine into my lungs and blood stream for a clean dose when needed. This has become a maintenance process for me, as I do enjoy smoking.

Daily Rub

Chronic pain from a partially disabled knee with a chipped patella can shut me down regularly. Compensating for the knee has left both legs, feet and lower back challenged. I’ve learned to use a medicated salve daily and often for immediate pain relief with no psychoactive properties when applied topically. There are many good salves and lotions on the market, but I’ve learned to make my own with coconut solid. This salve can also be used topically or eaten, replacing butter in recipes, or taken orally alone. It’s psychoactive, as it’s heated, and the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is activated with heat. It can be mixed with other lotions and stronger concentrates, such as Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), and put into a suppository for quick delivery into the blood stream. This method also works well for those who have trouble ingesting orally, as there are no psychoactive properties with the use of suppositories. Uses: Think “inflammation and infection” when using a topical salve, replacing over-thecounter topicals such as Ben Gay, or Neosporin for soft tissue pain, cuts, bug bites, minor skin cancers and more. When ingesting, think pain, sleep, digestive issues, and more. All of our systems and myriad ailments are helped by ingesting cannabis.

Morning Green

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • February 2016 • 18

I first began ingesting fan leaf when I saw a spider web-like mass in my right breast during a routine mammogram, then ultra sound in 2011. Lobular carcinoma is a mass, not a tumor, affecting just 10 to 15 percent of all women in this country, and is one of the toughest types of breast cancer to get rid of. By the time the first biopsy was scheduled six weeks later part of the mass was gone. I added the RSO protocol and it disappeared completely. During the protocol all my symptoms from thyroid disease, menopause, pain and more went away along with 10 prescription meds I’d been taking for 13 years. If you are fortunate enough to have leaf available to you, eating the plant raw causes no psychoactive reaction and delivers more real medicine into the blood stream than any other method. Some juice the leaf, I blend a handful each morning into a smoothie with beneficial juices like aloe or coconut water. Patient profiles I’ve done on people juicing include putting multiple sclerosis into remission. California doctor William Courtney helped his lovely wife Kirsten put Lupus into remission, and today they have two beautiful healthy children, with no sign of the ailment rearing its ugly head ever again.

Incredible Edible Medibles

When I first began using cannabis as medicine, sleeping pills were the first pharmaceutical to be removed from my medicine cabinet. With medibles easily available in most dispensaries, it’s an easy option. Making your own butter or infused oils to cook with will give you a wider range of ingesting options at home. All my cooking oils, vinegars, butters and more are infused, keeping the medicine of the plant in my system. Ingesting medibles can be tricky, as the recipes and strengths can vary depending on the type of cannabis strains used, the amount ingested, and what other medications or substances you may be taking. Those that are still mixing alcohol with edibles to party often end up sick, with vertigo sending them to the emergency room, as alcohol causes the inflammation and infection (headaches and hangovers) cannabis gets rid of. Those who present at the ER with too much THC in their system

are simply given Valium to calm the central nervous system only, as cannabis will not stop your heart. The rule of thumb is, eat a small amount initially, then wait an hour before eating more. As you continue to ingest, your tolerance will build and the THC won’t affect you as strongly. The worst mistake anyone makes is eating too much, in too little time. Be smart, start small, and go slow.

The Common Cold

Cannabis strengthens immune systems, warding off infection and illness. When I feel a fever, body aches, or stomach upset coming on, I up my ingesting, kicking colds and flu to the curb in two to three days, at best.

regimen used to be required, allowing the patient to get used to the strong concentrate slowly, as it typically measures in at around 80 percent THC and is extremely psychoactive. Today we know to use suppositories for no head high. Patients who are not used to THC report slight vertigo for the first few days only. This same treatment is encouraged for putting other illnesses into remission. Maladies such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, diabetes, and more are helped with the protocol, with a maintenance dose of a spot the size of a grain of rice to keep illness at bay. The recipe for RSO is shared via The Phoenix Tears Foundation – an organization set up to support the oil’s use

For bronchial issues that seem to linger past the infection, using a vaporizer clears up the cough and nasal passages, getting pure medicine into your lungs and into blood stream. I also use a topical for around and inside the nose, stopping inflammation.

RSO puts some of the most invasive cancers into remission and rights some of the most difficult disorders and diseases such as diabetes, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke recovery, rheumatoid arthritis, and more. Taken at bedtime, it’s the only thing that helps me sleep at night. No longer waking up every hour from menopause, the strong medicine of the plant also quelled any inflammation leading to pain I typically woke up with from a partially disabled knee. My hormonal issues from menopause and thyroid disease are also helped, with my emotions in check and a general sense of well-being ensuing. Cancer Dose… The treatment for putting cancer into remission is 60 grams. A step-up dosing

Please beware, adding cannabis ingesting with alcohol use can cause serious intoxication and tummy upset. Please use common sense.

Stoned or Well?

The psychoactive properties of THC aren’t just for fun, they are for healing. We as a species upped the THC count via hybridization over the past 40 years or so for recreation, but the holy anointing oil Jesus used measured in at around five percent and was indeed medicine. In fact, until cannabis was added to the list of bad substances in America’s failed war on drugs, it was used in more than 250 medical applications worldwide and accepted by some of the leading physicians of the day. Today CBD only options are now legal in the U.S. and able to ship across state lines. But CBD only would not have put my cancer into remission, it doesn’t help me get to sleep at night, and it doesn’t lift my moods up instantly when I smoke.

Evening Dose

Canadian Rick Simpson recreated the strong oil referred to now as Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) more than 15 years ago for his own terminal skin cancer. After clearing up his own cancer, he’s been sharing the recipe ever since with astounding results.

cannabis in the mix is counteracting the ill effects. I actually feel better after my tonics.

CBD only helps myriad ailments, including severe epilepsy in children, and we need it – but we also need THC. worldwide, www.phoenixtearsfoundation. com or Rick Simpson’s own site, www. phoenixtears.ca

Nurturing Nightcap

My favorite delivery is via infused alcohol, with all my cocktails now beneficial tonics. The process is simple, add a quarter to half a cup of ground plant material (I use whole plant, bud, stem and leaf) to a bottle of alcohol and let set in a cupboard for two weeks, occasionally shaking the bottle, then strain. I can’t tell you how brilliant this is, as alcohol is an inflammatory and causes infection – two conditions knocked out of the park with cannabis use. What this means is, I have no hangover the next day as headaches are basically inflammation, and any nausea that may ensue from drinking is quelled. This means I can enjoy my organ damaging cocktails in peace, knowing the

Got Cure?

While the American Cancer Society is still looking for a cure, stoners are already saving the world and its people one plant at a time. This is probably the most serious joke of the century, but it’s very real. The knowledge is there. My own physician had just a bleary idea of what this plant is about until I presented my newfound health to her. Now she can suggest to other patients with confidence – and is happy to do so. Don’t be shy about talking to your doctor about cannabis. The educated stoners of the world who know of cannabis’ healing properties must evangelize this plant… for until the words come out of our mouths, the truth will not be heard. Sharon Letts started in this world as a gardener, ended up a writer/producer, and continues to advocate for the freedom to garden every seed bearing plant. essential oils Essential Oils for a Calmer Life By: Shelly Berkowitz

Reflexologist & Holistic Health Counselor In 2016, I vowed to increase the calm in my life. And decrease the stress. How? By organizing more of my life. By showing up a little earlier to things. By taking care of myself, by eating better and by getting more sleep and exercise. But I am also taking a more active approach in my mental health. Being post-menopausal, I am experiencing mood changes and while it’s easy to just take this or that magic pill, it’s my goal to go au-natural in my approach. I am taking time every day to meditate for just 15 minutes. I am reading every day to help keep my brain stimulated and healthy. I am diffusing beautiful essential oils that encourage me to enjoy what I am breathing in and out. I am becoming more quiet. I am becoming more present. I am making sure to really examine, write down and be mindful in what I do every day. This is the second half of my life and I am determined not to go out hooked up to machines with pharmacological drugs

pumping through this beautiful, amazing body of mine. Are you looking to boost your mood, or add some calm to your life? Then you have come to the right place. Did you know the #1 essential oil used in the world AND for all-things calming (including skin) is LAVENDER…oh how I love lavender! Ancient writings suggest the use of lavender being used for over 2,500 years for both religious and medicinal purposes. The Egyptians were noted as using lavender for both mummification and for a type of perfume. The most famous use was noted in the writings of the Bible, when Mary anointed the baby Jesus with the oil on his feet. I find that it’s great to relax with in a bath, spray on my pillow at night to encourage a more restful night of sleep and also amazing in cupcakes! Lavender can be used to make homemade bug repellants, cleaning solutions and topically for skin irritations. It’s also been known to be great to help the skin with a more expedient healing with cuts and burns to the skin. There have been a vast number of studies on lavender oil over the years and its amazing therapeutic properties, which combat feelings of stress. Capsules administered to patients in a study in 2014 proved that lavender could be very effective in treating feelings of anxiousness in patients. The results were published for your reading and education here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/pubmed/24559818 . Another effective set of essential oils used in studies involving anxiety are citrus oils, like bergamot and orange. Just the smell makes me smile because it takes me back to my childhood memories of Southern California and all of the beautiful orange groves everywhere in the 60’s and 70’s. Diffused, these can be very powerful and fragrant oils. Following are a couple of studies, specifically related to bergamot: http://www.

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26473822 and orange oil: http://articles.mercola. com/sites/articles/archive/2014/03/06/ aromatherapy-essential-oils.aspx which show us that clearly a safe, natural alternative for treating anxiety is needed, and aromatherapy may be one such option worth trying. This research, in a nutshell showed: • A review of 16 randomized controlled trials examining the anxiolytic (anxietyinhibiting) effects of aromatherapy among people with anxiety symptoms showed that most of the studies indicated positive effects to quell anxiety (and no adverse events were reported). • Sweet orange oil has been found to have anxiety-inhibiting effects in humans, supporting its common use as a mood enhancer by aromatherapists. • People exposed to bergamot essential oil aromatherapy prior to surgery had a greater reduction in pre-operative anxiety than those in control groups. • Odors of orange and lavender reduced anxiety and improved mood in patients waiting for dental treatment. • Compared to the controls, women who were exposed to orange odor in a dental office had a lower level of anxiety, a more positive mood, and a higher level of calmness. Researchers concluded, “exposure to ambient odor of orange has a relaxant effect.”

2016 is a whole new year. I personally want more living in my life. I really want to focus on the things that make me happy, then do more of that. I want to live bigger, dream bigger and most of all, I want more calm in my life. And of course, I am wishing all of these things for you as well. By: Miggy Fourtwenty, Danielle Vitale-O’Brien, Mindi Griffiths & Becca Nichols Prison Outreach:

Valentine’s Day, a day for lovers to show each other how much they care, a day when even grade school children share cards and candy hearts. Many of us take for granted our freedom to be able to enjoy all of the personal experiences and moments with those we love during such holidays. Being ripped away from loved ones is one of the worst punishments resulting from the unjust drug war. Sitting alone in a cold cell, on a stiff cot, a pot prisoner lays awake miserably thinking about past moments with loved ones because the present is too cruel. Punished for utilizing a healing plant with more positive than negative impact on one’s life, punished for helping sick people help themselves. One such person is Chris Lee Martin, the creator of Zonka Bars. A chef, father, and loving husband sentenced to two years behind bars because he helped people who chose to consume his safe product voluntarily. Chris has not seen his loving wife or children since his incarceration. Due to the fact that his wife is a co-defendant and not permitted to visit him, his punishment has already been cruel and unusual. Chris’ wife continues to run the family business, Hempful Farms Cafe in Arizona, while awaiting her fate and her lover’s release. Chris and his family can use all of the love and support the community has to offer. Support can be as simple as a letter of hope, which may be sent to: Chris Martin ADC# 138869 Arizona State Prison Complex-Yuma Unit Cibola PO Box 8909 San Luis, AZ 85349

Tacoma, WA – Lance Gloor, a Tacoma Dispensary owner who has been fighting his case since the 2011 raids is very

NO VICTIM = NO CRIME = NOT GUILTY NO ONE SHOULD GO TO JAIL FOR A PLANT brave and decided to take his case to trial. If found guilty, he will be facing 35 years to LIFE! His charges include conspiracy to distribute marijuana, conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, possession of a firearm and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Lance’s case finally went to trial during the middle of January. Testimony from his ex-girlfriend said that Lance was trying to open a medical marijuana store in Las Vegas. This is a very important case because Judge Leighton has allowed him to use the Washington state medical marijuana laws in his federal trial. All Lance needs is one of the eleven jurors to believe the law to be bad and vote ‘not guilty’ (jury nullification) or Lance will become another victim of prohibition in federal prison. At the time this article was written, Lance was in trial, we will update you on the outcome of Lance’s case in next month’s issue. Kansas - The case of State (of Kansas) versus Shona Banda took a turn on the morning of January 12th, when Shona along with her attorney Sarah Swain appeared for arraignment. Shona Banda, victim of a police raid last year that could bring years in prison, is on the verge of making history. Banda’s attorney, Sarah stated, “After discussions between the parties, the case has been set for a threeday motions hearing from July 27-29 to determine the scope of scientific evidence that we, the defense, will be allowed to present at the jury trial. The State of Kansas has never allowed or recognized a medical necessity defense. But, as we all know, there’s a first time for everything. I believe that this case will move forward with Ms. Banda allowed to inform the jury that her use of medical cannabis was allowed under the law. We will be on the right side of history. And we will set precedent with nationwide implications.” Bellingham, WA – Known as the ‘Bellingham 3’, Martin Nickerson, Chris Ramsey and Poppy Sidhu have been in the hands of the government for over four years for their participation in a medical marijuana dispensary. The three were prepared to take their case all the way to trial, however on January 14th, Bellingham

courts dropped charges that could have put them in prison for over 30 years! Freedom from the President – President Obama just granted clemency to 95 federal inmates, three of which are our fellow plant prisoners. We are happy to announce Charles Cundiff, Billy Dekle and Chad Latham are now free from their federal sentences. Charles Cundiff was serving life, and had been in prison since 1991 for 2 counts of conspiracy to import and distribute marijuana. William Dekle was also serving a life sentence, he had been incarcerated since 1990 for conspiracy to import over 1,000 kilograms of marijuana. Chad had been in prison for 13 years, serving his 15 year sentence for growing 2,000 marijuana plants. As of now, we have over 50 prisoners serving LIFE sentences for our plant, hopefully more will be released soon!

norml Take Action Nevada Smoke the Vote 2016 By: Brian Arevalo

Executive Director, Las Vegas NORML The Nevada Legislature will let registered Nevada voters decide on November 8, 2016 whether to end marijuana prohibition and regulate marijuana like alcohol with Initiative Petition 1(IP1). Support for marijuana legalization has quickly outpaced opposition and today’s research show’s a majority of Americans (52%), support the legalization of marijuana. The 2016 Election will be the largest election to date in the history of the reform movement and the marijuana voting bloc is larger than ever before.

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Las Vegas broke a record number of 42 million visitors from around the world in 2015. Recreational marijuana in Nevada would decriminalize possession and allow responsible adults 21 and over to possess and consume an ounce or less of cannabis in the state of Nevada. Visitors 21 years and older from all over the world will be legally able to enjoy a cannabis experience unique to Nevada as we are poised to emerge as one of the premiere cannabis tourist destinations. Nevada’s current medical marijuana program will be unaffected as patients will still have access to medicine at a more affordable price than recreational marijuana due to a lower tax rate on wholesale medical marijuana. The measure would end marijuana prohibition and replace it with a system in which marijuana is regulated and taxed similarly to alcohol. Marijuana sales would be conducted by licensed businesses that generate new jobs and tax revenue for our state and its localities. Law enforcement officials would be able to redirect their time and resources towards addressing serious crimes. Adults 21 and older who use marijuana responsibly would no longer face arrest and prosecution. Individuals can easily register to vote on line with the Nevada Secretary of State at www.nvsos.gov or you can visit us at www. LasVegasNORML.com to register and learn more about Initiative Petition 1 (IP1) and how it will positively affect the future of the Nevada cannabis industry. It’s time to Take Action Nevada and make marijuana legalization a realization! Freedom is NORML

medical PTSD and Cannabis: Can Pot Treat Shell-Shock? By: Dr. Kit, Pharm.D, RPh.

“Shell-shock” “Battle fatigue” “Nervous exhaustion”. We’ve all heard the terms. Now referred to as PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder is defined as “a condition of persistent mental and emotional stress occurring as a result of injury or severe psychological shock, typically involving disturbance of sleep and constant vivid recall of the experience, with dulled responses to others and to the outside world.” (Thank you dictionary.com!) It can occur in anyone exposed to trauma, such as bad car accidents, domestic violence, or violent crime, but has been often been used in the media to apply to military war veterans. PTSD can begin as soon as 3 months after the traumatic event, but may not show up until years later. Symptoms include: flashbacks/nightmares and bad memories of the event, severe distress at/ avoidance of things or places that remind you of the event, insomnia, anxiety, paranoia/vigilance, guilt/shame, self-destructive behavior, and difficulty in paying attention. Medical marijuana has been used to treat a variety of conditions for hundreds of years. Recently, state-administered medical marijuana programs have limited the conditions allowed for use. Traditionally, these have included such diseases as severe nausea, cancer, AIDS, and poor appetite with muscle wasting (also known as cachexia). As more research has shown evidence of usefulness, states have expanded the acceptable uses within their programs. Nevada currently accepts patients with the following nine diagnoses into the medical marijuana program: glaucoma, AIDS, cancer, cachexia, persistent muscle spasms, seizures, severe nausea, severe pain, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this article, we will examine the evidence for the use of cannabis in PTSD, adverse effects associated with its use, and examples of strains that have shown effectiveness in treating PTSD symptoms. Cannabis is believed to help ease PTSD symptoms due to impairment of shortterm memory, decreased anxiety, and decreased insomnia. Often, patients with PTSD initially turn to cannabis to treat jit-

teriness and trouble sleeping, but continue using cannabis to treat other PTSD symptoms. Short-term memory loss, typically an unwanted side effect of cannabis use, is instead a desirable effect in PTSD, interfering with the recall of painful and traumatic events. Cannabis is also believed to be particularly helpful with flashbacks. In animal models, cannabis has been shown to decrease the fear/anxiety response associated with flashbacks. And in another recent animal study, when cannabinoids (in this case, synthetic cannabis) were given within 24 hours after a traumatic event, they prevented the development of PTSD. In 2009, New Mexico became the first state to accept PTSD as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana use. New Mexico additionally required each patient with PTSD applying to the New Mexico medical marijuana program to be evaluated by a psychiatrist. Chart reviews were performed on the first 80 patients using a diagnosis of PTSD as their qualifying condition. Using a standard, validated test (Clinician Administered Posttraumatic Scale, or CAPS) to assess symptom relief, study investigators compared patient scores when they were using cannabis versus when they were not. They discovered an average of greater than 75% reduction in symptoms while taking cannabis versus when not taking cannabis. Although this study relies greatly on patients reporting symptom relief while using cannabis, it is one of the largest studies published to date showing evidence that cannabis can be effective in the treatment of PTSD. Another large study investigating cannabis to treat PTSD in military veterans is reported to be in the final stages of approval. This study plans to recruit 76 vets, and will divide them into 4 treatment groups: placebo + 3 treatment groups: high THC, high CBD, and equal THC/CBD. They will complete 2 stages, each consisting of 3 weeks of treatment and 2 weeks without cannabis. Treatment effectiveness will be evaluated using CAPS scores and independent observer evaluations before and after each study period as well as 6 months after the second stage is complete. The study aims to determine the safety and effectiveness of cannabis for PTSD and the most effective cannabinoid profile. At last report, the study was awaiting final DEA approval and the delivery of cannabis for study use before beginning to recruit

and enroll patients. Although cannabis is generally considered to be relatively safe for use in most adults, there can be problems with its use to treat PTSD. Cannabis use disorder, which is cannabis use that impairs life function, has been reported, particularly in patients with severe trauma resulting in PTSD. Strains too high in THC, especially in patients with a family history of schizophrenia or psychosis, can increase anxiety and paranoia. Characteristics of useful strains for the treatment of PTSD include: indica-dominant, leading to decreased insomnia; relatively low THC (<25%) and possibly elevated CBD, both decreasing the risk of added anxiety and paranoia and increasing feelings of relaxation. Examples of such strains include OG Kush (most all Kush strains are indica-dominant), Northern Lights, Granddaddy Purple, and LA Confidential, among others. Reviewing a strain’s cannabinoid profile, making sure to avoid high-THC or activating-type strains may also be helpful, especially when encountering new or unfamiliar strains. A variety of ways to take cannabis have been successfully used to treat PTSD, from smoking and vaporizing to topical creams and lotions. Patients who are new to cannabis for PTSD should start with a low dose (1-2 puffs, a small piece of an edible, cream on a 1-2 inch area of skin), in order to minimize adverse effects. Inexperienced patients should avoid cannabis wax initially, until they know how much cannabis will be effective in treating their symptoms. As a general rule, the lowest dose that works should be used, and patients can slowly increase doses as they become more tolerant to cannabis. Although cannabis has been used for hundreds, if not thousands of years to treat various ailments, it has only recently begun to be studied for the treatment of PTSD. Current research, although primarily limited to animal studies and case reports, has shown that cannabis may reduce the symptoms of PTSD. More research, with larger patient groups and comparisons with placebo and/or established treatments, is needed to determine how cannabis can play a role in the treatment of PTSD.

industry Bet It All on Green: Superior Medicine From Evergreen Organix By: Jason Sturtsman

Evergreen Organix, a 33,000 square foot Clark County cannabis cultivation and 4,700 square foot marijuana infused production facility, is producing some of the highest quality flower and gourmet edibles that local patients and out of town visitors have ever seen. Their cannabis consultant, The Von Dank Group, has guaranteed that Evergreen Organix is the cleanest run medical marijuana facility in the state of Nevada, requiring no pesticides to assure that the medicine is perfect in every way possible, protecting patients from gambling with their medicine. Jillian Nelson, Operations Manager of Evergreen Organix, has a long history of successful businesses, and is now bringing a game changing degree of innovation and excellence to the Nevada marijuana industry. I recently had the chance to sit down with her and find out just what we can expect from Evergreen Organix in the future. JS: What are some of the cannabis strains we can expect from Evergreen Organix? JN: Currently our cultivators have some popular favorites growing such as Girl Scout Cookies and Sour Diesel, but we have some proprietary strains that are exclusive to our operation that will also be hitting the market in February: EGO OG and Hacienda Haze.

giving them nothing but the best. JS: What are some of the marijuana infused products we will soon see on the shelves of local dispensaries? JN: Presently, we have our Evergreen Classix line out on dispensary shelves throughout Nevada. The Classix line is a solvent-free line of edibles that are made with old-fashioned cannabutter. We are currently working on our debut line of CO2 extraction products and infused edibles which are set to hit the market this month. JS: Tell us more about your plan to use CO2 cannabis oil instead of butane derived cannabis extractions for your edibles and concentrates? JN: Our team did some research into different extraction methods and felt that CO2 was a better suit for our philosophy. Compared to butane extraction, CO2 extraction is one of the cleanest and safest cannabis extraction methods because it leaves no residual solvents in extracted products and has minimal environmental impact. The method is also popularly used to decaffeinate coffee and create essential oils. Using CO2 extraction, we will be able to isolate cannabinoids down to their purest molecular forms, meaning that we can extract pure THC or CBD with no additional plant matter residue and create edibles that do not have any cannabis taste or smell, but still provide patients with the medicinal

JS: Tell us more about what you do to ensure that patients receive clean medicine. JN: We host a zero-air exchange clean room environment as to limit any external pests, fungi or mold from coming in contact with our crops. All our cultivation team has to decontaminate and change into clean room garments prior to entering the facility and we do this to minimize our exposure risks and consequently minimize any need for pesticides or fungicides to be used in our facility. We are growing medicine and do not want to be using harsh chemicals on our products as we are catering to many sick people that need the purest form of medicine possible and we take every precaution as to ensure that we are

compounds of medical marijuana that they rely upon. JS: Many patients need specialized cannabis edibles that are capsules, made without sugar, or gluten free - when do you plan to have these available to patients? JN: We are presently working on a line of products to cater to patients with dietary restrictions and allergies. We intend to carry vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, and paleo products in order to be able to provide medicine to all patients and hopefully we will have those to market in March of this year. JS: What products do you plan to release in the next few months? JN: As we develop and our operation grows, we are constantly looking for ways to expand our product line. Soon we are hoping to be able to sell cannabutter and infused coconut oil. We will also be releasing our body product line, Evergreen Botanix in the coming months. JS: How do you see the future of cannabis in Nevada? JN: Growing! We mean that both figuratively and literally. The market and patient outreach is only getting bigger, and more and more people are choosing to rely upon medical cannabis versus pharmaceutical options to treat their chronic conditions. And, with more people coming to realize the amazing medical benefits of cannabis, more cultivators and producers are going to need to cater to the demand. The thought of this makes us really optimistic for the future of the market and the culture because it really is an amazing industry and we are proud to say that we were one of the first in Nevada to be a part of it. Julian Marley By: Stephanie Shehan

Julian Marley, son of the late, great Bob Marley is taking the cannabis world by storm with his newly branded JUJU Royal product line. Recently, I had the chance to chat with him about JUJU Royal, his musical ventures and of course, all things cannabis.

You grew up in England, at what age did you move to Jamaica? What led you to move to Jamaica? When I moved to Jamaica I was 17, which was a life experience as I was just finishing school. With music being part of my life, Jamaica was the best place to begin playing music. Studio and musicians were more easily accessible in Jamaica than in England. I look at the move as more of a musical experience.

You are the son of the great Bob Marley, how do you think your dad would feel about the progression of the cannabis movement? I think my father would be very happy knowing that cannabis has come so far and the fight for legalization and recreational use of herb has become freer. These are the things that I think my father and many other great legends were fighting for in their time so to see it come to fruition I think he would be very happy to know we are a step closer to freedom.

Do you feel that cannabis is medical or recreational? Cannabis is both medical and recreational, it does so many things

for you. The medical use of the herb has been proven. It is a tool to be used for dissecting your thoughts and reasoning with one another.

Is your entire family procannabis? Yes, not everyone in my family smokes but everyone knows what is right, Jah created all plants in its natural essence. Once you respect God and the creation, right away you are going to be pro-life, protrees, pro-mango, pro-vegetable. It’s all part of Jah’s nature.

What is your favorite strain? My favorite strain is OG, any OG. I also like the “cookies “ vibe.

Do you use cannabis in any concentrated form or is smoking flower your preferred method of ingestion? I like all things from the cannabis plant and try different methods from time to time ...But tradition for me is a spliff.

What are you currently working on musically? Currently I am working on a new album. The title is not ready yet but I am looking to release the album in May or June. I will have some singles releasing soon. I have some great work happening and feel that people will like it, so stay tuned!

legal Beware of Illegal Marijuana Delivery!

(Information as stated on the Nevada Division of Public & Behavioral Health website)

As of early 2016, only a fraction of the eventual 66 certified medical marijuana dispensaries are operating in northern and southern Nevada. They are storefront, walk-in facilities, and are listed on the DPBH website. Delivery-only businesses currently selling and delivering medical marijuana are not legal, regulated, certified by the state, or in any way endorsed or supported by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health. Patients are urged to purchase their medicine from state certified medical marijuana dispensaries to be in compliance with the law and so that the purchased medicine is tested and safe.

Certified medical marijuana dispensaries must use the services of an independent testing laboratory to ensure that all marijuana, edible marijuana products and marijuanainfused products sold by the dispensaries are tested for content, quality and potency in accordance with standards established by the Division. Labels on the packages will disclose laboratory findings.

Certified dispensaries are walk-in storefronts with clear signage and a distinct medical/pharmaceutical appearance.

By law, certified dispensaries are required to conspicuously post their State of Nevada medical marijuana establishment registration certificate and their business license.

Packages of usable marijuana products (dried leaves and flowers) in legal dispensaries will bear labels that disclose information such as the company name, medical marijuana establishment registration certificate number, lot number, etc. Labels on packages containing usable

Tokin’ With the Infamous

As we were gearing up for CHAMPS, it was the perfect time to sit down for a session at the Sour Glass headquarters with the infamous Big John Sour himself, the creator of the twisted glass bong. The Sour warehouse is a collector’s paradise, filled with floor to ceiling glass pieces, all hand-blown by either John himself, or one of the very few whom he trusts to manufacture the Sour brand. This is not an assembly line, made in China, bottom shelf product. This is top shelf, American made, highest of quality glass, handblown in San Diego, California. I packed some Angel Food (Girl Scout Cookies x Fire OG) and John pulled out one of his classic twist creations. We talked, we laughed, and we reminisced. John and I have been really good friends for a very long time, and this conversation reminded me of just how innovative and important he was, and is, in the industry. He may be a man of few words, but he is a godfather in the glass industry, so listen up.

Big John: Yep. Hopper: They’d (Cypress Hill) rip that every show of the tour back then. Big John: They did? Cool. I didn’t know they took it with them.

Hopper: Can you estimate how many pieces you’ve done over the years? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Big John: Yeah, maybe up to hundreds of thousands.

Hopper: When you came up with the twist, it was so innovative. Every Zong was a Sour design, correct? Big John: Correct. Hopper: How has the evolution of dabbing changed the industry?

Hopper: CHAMPS is coming up soon, Sour has always been a staple at these events. It’s going to be a good time!

Big John: Since 1985.

Big John: It started out of my garage, and I got the name because I guess I was looking sour all the time. I was the first, back in 1991, to make an all glass flared base.

Big John: The twist.

Big John: Big time. People are going with much smaller pieces. The industry has gotten crazy with all of the new innovations. It’s mind blowing.

Hopper: How long have you been blowing glass?

Hopper: How did Sour get started?

companies?

Hopper: Yeah, they took it on tour. We’ve been friends for a long time. I gotta say that one of my favorite memories is when you made the set up for the world’s first underwater bong hit I did. Big John: Yeah, that was a good one. I made a special device that didn’t let water in, and then we dropped the heated rod down to light it, and history was on. You can see it on YouTube. Hopper: Yeah, you can see the walrus (me) doing the hit! We have definitely had some good times! What separates Sour from all of the other glass

Big John: Yep. We’ll be there, Booth 340. Staying at the Hard Rock, gonna be hanging out at the Circle Bar. We’re looking forward to meeting new people, and getting some Sours in their hands. Hopper: For everyone who can’t make it to CHAMPS, how can they get their hands on a Sour piece? Big John: You can get Sour at numerous places, through different companies, but the main place is twistedglasshouse.com.

TRAIN WRECKED By: Bill Shehan

Back in the day I used to smoke a lot of Train Wreck. That was one of my favorite strains, and still is. Prior to this review, I had not had Train Wreck in 15 years. Certain strains are embedded in my brain sort of like knowing someone as a child, and seeing them again as an adult. Hopefully this is what we have here. I saw a $40 eighth special on Train Wreck at Las Vegas Releaf, so a reunion was in order… I would go to the dance in about one hour with a strain I hadn’t seen in over 15 years. The anticipation was killing me. The drive home and the questions...would it smell the same? Would it taste the same? I resisted opening the jar and waited until I got to the shop to get to work. I was working you know. I get to smoke weed for a living. Green Life Productions has their Train Wreck game on point. Everything was as beautiful as imagined, if not better. This strain is a heavy sativa, and packs a very powerful punch. I would recommend Train Wreck to anyone who likes video games, playing music, or doing things while you are medicated. I would recommend that patients who are light smokers watch their intake of this ride, as it may induce anxiety. It brought me back to 1999, sort of like a time machine. I will definately be getting TRAINWRECKED on a regular basis. Sorry I have been away so long. I suggest revisiting one of your old favorite strains. The eighth actually weighed in at 3.7grams, and had me checking my scale.
