editor’s note This month brings a few welcome changes for Nevada medical marijuana card applicants. Instead of mailing in a payment of $25 to request a medical marijuana card application, patients are now able to register and print the application online saving time and expediting the process. Most applicants are currently receiving their approval letter within one week. In addition, Las Vegas now has a local office which, with the assistance of our local dispensaries, can provide patients same day approval. These revisions to the application process are long overdue and will be quite beneficial especially to our patients with terminal illness. In this month’s issue, you will find an exclusive interview with the legendary Tommy Chong along with a calendar of upcoming events which includes local firework shows and a wealth of valuable resources. This issue also features six full pages of amazing product introductions providing you a peek at what our local dispensaries are currently offering. Don’t miss Chalice coming up July 8-10 in Victorville. Vegas Cannabis will have a booth so if you attend, be sure to stop by and say “high.” Later in the month, High Times is holding their So-Cal Medical Cannabis Concentrates Cup in San Bernardino, CA. And, don’t forget, Champs is back at the Las Vegas Convention Center July 19-21. As most of you know, with Champs comes a handful of after parties. Check out our events section for more information. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Tips for Medical Marijuana Patients By: Amanda Connor Esq.

Nevada’s medical marijuana industry is slowly gaining traction. There are now somewhere between 15,000 to 20,000 medical marijuana patient card holders in Nevada’s medical marijuana program. In addition to state patients, Nevada’s law allows dispensaries to sell medical marijuana to out of state patients. While at first glance, it may appear that it is a straight forward system – you get a card and you can buy medical marijuana, this industry is highly regulated and there are several laws and regulations that must be followed. Furthermore, if a patient does not abide by Nevada’s medical marijuana laws, the patient could be charged with a

crime. Therefore, it is a critical that a patient knows his or her rights. Here are some tips for medical marijuana patients in Nevada (and those out of state patients that are visiting):

Therefore, you should not drive after using your medicine. Nevada’s DUI laws with regards to marijuana simply test for presence of marijuana in the blood so arguably a patient could not be impaired but still test positive. A patient should become familiar with the DUI laws to protect his or her self from charges.

Do NOT consent to a warrantless search of your home, car, or person and Insist that your attorney be present before answering ANY questions

Do NOT use in a public place. It is against the law to use your medicine in a public place. If you do, you could be charged with a crime. It is important to know that hotels can charge a clean up fee if an individual uses his or her medicine in the room and those clean up fees can be expensive.

Do NOT possess more than 2.5 ounces of marijuana

State law allows a patient to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. With regards to purchasing product, a patient can purchase 2.5 ounces of marijuana every 14 days.

Do NOT drive while under the influence of your medicine Driving under the influence is a crime that could be a felony.

It is important to protect your rights. Having an attorney present prior to searches or interrogations is a great way to make sure your rights are protected. By law, you do not have to consent to a search. Law enforcement is required to obtain a warrant – make them do their jobs. As a patient it is important to know your rights. Marijuana remains federally illegal and is illegal except for medical marijuana in Nevada. Contact an attorney if you have questions regarding your rights as a patient If you have any questions about the medical marijuana patient card process or if you have a question about patient rights and licenses, you can contact our firm today to discuss your situation. Tommy Chong Interview By: Bill Shehan

Late last month, right before laughing my ass off at the Cheech and Chong Comedy Show, I had the pleasure of meeting up with Tommy Chong in his room at Treasure Island. We had the chance to chat about everything from cannabis to politics and here is what he had to say: BS: How are you and how is your health?

TC: Good, so far. I am off all the cancer meds. I got a clean bill of health from my doctor and I go in on the 27th for a CAT scan to see if there is anything still lurking around. Energy is a bit low but other than that, I feel really good. Our tour is winding down and I was just thinking about what I want to do. I like growing so I think I might start growing again. As a medical marijuana patient, under California law I am licensed to grow 12 plants.

BS: Out of all the presidents, who was your favorite to smoke with? TC: Well, I never actually smoked with any of them. I do believe that Clinton never inhaled …because when I met him, he had no idea who I was. Now, Cheech on the other hand, met Obama and he knew right away who Cheech was. So that should tell you something. BS: Tonight you are performing your comedy show here at Treasure Island. Is Cheech performing with you? TC: Oh yes, the comedy show features me and Cheech and my wife Shelby who opens for us. It is a full on comedy show. We are on our 8th farewell tour. I wish I could say farewell and retire but there is nothing for me to retire from. BS: Anytime I meet someone that is over the age of 60. I ask them if they intend to retire “Tommy Chong style.” How does it feel to be a pot icon?

BS: We feature new dispensary products in the magazine each month. Will the readers get to see Chong’s Choice in the feature at some point?

TC: It feels really good.

TC: We have a team in Nevada that is looking for licensed cultivators to grow Chong’s Choice. Hopefully recreational passes this year and we can go full force.

BS: What are your favorite Chong’s Choice strains? TC: White Widow, BC Buds and of course anything Hawaiian. Just the thought of anything Hawaiian gets me high! I appreciate the good cannabis that people have spent years perfecting but I also enjoy the cheap stuff. I guess you could say I like it all.

BS: It’s great to see you emerging into the medical marijuana market with your chosen strains. In your opinion, how does medical marijuana differ from recreational marijuana? TC: I believe that all marijuana is medical. I think the most important thing that marijuana does is it affects the brain. We have receptors in our brain as you well know and when you ingest marijuana, I believe that it essentially gives you a reboot. When you smoke marijuana, you are in the moment and you are happy. You forget about any worries of the past or the future. BS: How much marijuana do you smoke on a daily basis?

BS: Let’s talk politics for a second. I know that you support Bernie Sanders. How do you feel the presidential race is going so far? TC: It’s going great. I support Bernie and I love his approach. He is all about being humane and loving to each other. But, I really love what Trump is doing. He is doing a great job of exposing the republicans for what they really are. He is a true republican: he is hypocritical and two-faced, he’s a liar, a cheat, and a thief and the more he speaks, the more his real character shows.

TC: Not much. I only smoke maybe a nug a day.

BS: Lastly, besides the Cheech and Chong Comedy Show, what other projects are you currently working on?

BS: How does the amount you smoke today differ from the amount you smoked back in the days of Cheech and Chong?

TC: I am currently working on an art project that will be unveiled in the near future. I will keep the Vegas Cannabis readers posted and we will likely do an art show here in Las Vegas at some point.

TC: We have never been big smokers, neither Cheech nor I. We were too creative, and we had a lot to do. We are actors and to be honest, I am the type of person that can reference a thought or a smell and get high. Marijuana at the time we were making movies was not that readily available and I do prefer to be coherent when I am working. BS: YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST. Tommy Chong doesn’t smoke that much marijuana!

News from the Front Lines

By: Kristin Flor, Mindi Griffiths, Miggy 420, Danielle Vitale-O’Brien & Becca Nichols PRISON OUTREACH

The 4th of July will come and go and each year that we celebrate freedom by having the day off and barbecuing, a plant prisoner sits in jail wondering when the rest of the world will wake up. As we drink our beer, smoke our legal or illegal herb pending on what state you are in, let us take a moment of remembrance for those who have lost their lives and are losing life while sitting in a cold loveless jail cell; prison is meant for criminals, not potheads. As July 4th approaches, we must give attention to one of our heroes who was serving a LIFE sentence for cannabis. Bill Lamorte passed away on July 4th, 2007 at the Fort Dix prison in New Jersey, from a heart attack after serving approximately 15 years in prison. Eugene Fischer, one of our released POW’s who served 25 years of a life sentence for cannabis, who was friends and had served time with Bill before he passed away, describes Bill as, “A gentle, helpful, kind man who should never have died in prison.” When Eugene got out of prison, he left some of his cannabis LIFER friends behind and is determined to fight for them all. To hear more from Eugene, one of the Voices Of the Cannabis War radio hosts, and some recently released LIFERs listen to recent episode at http:// goo.gl/iBwmjy. Celebrations are in order for three LIFERS who were given their freedom back this month! President Obama granted

clemency to Ronald Gregory Farah from Boca Raton, Florida and Jesus Ruiz of Kennedale, Texas. They will be released in October of this year. Weldon Angelos was immediately released May 31st after a federal court granted him a reduction in sentence. Michael Thompson: We would like to extend our condolences to Michael and his family. Michael is incarcerated in a Michigan State Penitentiary serving a LIFE sentence for cannabis. We are sorry to report his mother recently passed away and grief bars is difficult to process, at best. Michael was allowed to see his mother just before her death, but as is the case for everyone, he was not able to be at his own mother’s funeral. Chris Martin: Chris is in an Arizona state prison for providing cannabis to patients. His wife Andi and his children have done the best they can in his absence, but the latest blow to the family hurts deeply. In a social media post Andi described the consequences of the unjust decision best: “I am missing my Husband, my best friend, the other part of me. The prison has denied us again for visits. I am at a loss and just want to see Chris. Too sad to get into the fighting I have done to try to see him and how this is just wrong and they have made a huge mistake and won’t admit it. My husband does NOT deserve this my family does NOT deserve this and I’m just tired of it all, our kids are hurting again because of a (expletive) up justice system.......and i have exhausted all my appeals for visitation, they said I can see him when he gets home.” Jerry Duval: In April, Plant Prisoner Jerry Duval went missing! Jerry’s co-defendant and son, recently released POW, Jeremy

Duval recently talked to him, and found his disappearance is because his dad is serving 60 days of his federal sentence for cannabis on lockdown. Until Recently, the reason for his lockdown was unknown. Jeremey found out that his dad got in a scuffle with another inmate, and when he was let out he refused to stand for count. Jerry is not allowed to communicate with his family or the outside world until August 17. Jerry is a kidney and a pancreas transplant, also lives with glaucoma and neuropathy patient. Jeremy and his family are worried he is not being properly cared for on lockdown. Jerry can receive mail! Please send Jerry a card to Gerald Lee Duvall # 10717-050, FMC DEVENS, FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER, P.O. BOX 879, AYER, MA 01432. Please sign his petition online at https://goo.gl/iBXw8S.

News Around the Nation

Oregon - Paul Stanford of Portland joined VOW in an interview to discuss how he avoided prison time, in large part, due to jury nullification. He is the founder of The Hemp and Cannabis Foundation, THCF Medical Clinics, and the Campaign for the Restoration and Regulation of Hemp. Stanford discussed the inherent corruption of our government and the need to make drastic changes to the whole system in order to retain our human rights. One part of our system he supports is the role of the jury. “Jury nullification is a critical component...and final protection in the judicial system.” To hear the full interview and interviews with FIJA’s Kirsten Tynan and NJ Weedman go to: http:// bit.ly/1Y41x6q. Stop by and see Paul in person at Portland’s Hempstalk September 24th, and 25th. Visit http://hempstalk.org/ site/ for more information. Lance Gloor: Washington- Sentencing for Lance Gloor, former mmj provider was held

in Federal court on June 3rd. Lance was sentenced to 10 years by Judge Leighton. Despite dozens of letters from the community, the judge based his decision based on testimony from the snitches in Lance’s case. The judge called Lance a ‘flim flam man’ and the federal prosecutor referred to our state’s MMJ laws as an ‘experiment’. Lance’s attorney fought hard to have Lance released based off of current mmj cases that are being held in the 9th circuit appeals court. Regardless of Lances fight to be free, the judge kept him in prison. Lance followed state laws, and because our state and federal laws are different, he will spend the next 10 years in prison, and 5 years on probation. Lance’s family is presently trying to raise money for an appeal via GoFundMe. If you would like to help cheer up Lance, please send him a letter to: Lance Gloor #44270-086, FDC SEATAC, FEDERAL DETENTION CENTER, P.O. BOX 13900, SEATTLE, WA 98198. The Rise Of The Pothead Politicians - Ever since Washington State passed its recreational law, the medical marijuana program has taken a large hit, not just the program, but the medicinal value and who deserves to treat themselves holistically has been drawn into question with the reshaping of the program with SB5052 which ironically was called the Cannabis Patient Protection Act which ended up hurting dispensaries, medical providers, holistic caregivers, and in the end patients. Three people in Washington State’s medical marijuana industry have decided to take a stand and are running for office, trying to change the law from within. These three superstars are Michael Scott (running for State Representative in the 10th Legislative District under the libertarian ticket), Tammy Ramsay (running for State Representative for the 24th District), and finally drug war victim Stephanie Heart (running for State Representative for the 46th Legislative District). Each of these individuals has been involved in Washington State’s medical marijuana program one way or another and have witnessed first hand the harms of the recreational law that was scared of the medical market already in place. Stephanie Heart, who is running for 46th district is also behind initiative 1419, Wa State Cannabis Patient Reform Act. This initiative will help keep us all out of jail! To sign the petition, please go to: http://goo.gl/lh5VES Kansas- The highly publicized case against Shona Banda continues to take its toll on the Crohn’s survivor. Peppermint in its’ purest form, has been studied over and over again by scientists, publishing their studies on PubMed. Studies include: the effects that peppermint has on exercise performance (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/

Put a few drops into a spray bottle and fill the rest with water. This method is great to spray on the back of your neck when you’re hot. Put a couple drops in a roller ball and fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil to use for a little peppermint

Peppermint was found in all of these studies to have helped support the body naturally in every situation. As you can see, peppermint is such an amazing oil to have in your arsenal at home.

under a stuffy nose or roll across the forehead to help the body naturally bring down a fever.

Where would we be without Peppermint? This hearty little plant has been around for thousands of years, being used for everything from tea, gum and food & drug products, to hair treatments and muscle aches. Pure peppermint has also been known to be highly antiseptic in nature. But did you know, peppermint is also known to be a mood lifter? One way to get a little peppermint into your life is by adding a few drops to an oil diffuser. It really helps the overall mood in the house. It relaxes nerves and it feels refreshing. Pure, therapeutic grade essential oils are an ideal way to support the body naturally to get you through life’s ups and downs. So remember, if the oils are not pure, the extra chemicals that make up a bottle could give you very adverse effect and feelings. Be very careful when choosing essential oils for inhalation use. Babies, or children and people with compromised immune systems can be especially sensitive to these harmful toxins.

Many people have been known to use peppermint for nausea, and stomach and digestive issues. If you’ve ever used a little mint tea after dinner to help with the digestion process, you understand what I am talking about. This is one potent plant! A little goes a long way. Medicinally, pure therapeutic grade peppermint oil has been utilized in many overthe-counter digestive helpers.

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • July 2016 • 32

The uses for pure peppermint are vast, but it’s an oil that should definitely be included in your homeopathic tool kit.

Let’s not forget that peppermint is also great to use in cooking. Try peppermint tea, peppermint chocolate brownies, a drop of peppermint and basil in lemonade or peppermint ice cream. Make your own mint lip balm, drop some peppermint in your hair conditioner or drop a little into your next foot spa. Hopefully I have given you some ideas for peppermint use in your home. Hello and welcome to summer in Las Vegas. Since Nevada is a newer medical marijuana state, I want to send this rant out to those who have moved to Las Vegas to be part of the BOOM!! Las Vegas gets really insanely hot during the summer. The high temps can be quite brutal and DEADLY. Six years ago this month, my very good friend and singer/guitarist Todd Sampson was doing a show with his band M.I.A. And, the heat got to him. He started sweating buckets, his skin was flush, he couldn’t talk right, and he was burning up. He had almost finished the show when he collapsed. We tried putting ice in his armpits and ice water over his head, we gave him a half an hour or so and he started feeling better. I drove him home. He was ok for a while so I went to the store to get him something to replenish his fluids. By the time I got back he was convulsing. We picked him up and raced him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he passed away on the drive. Pulling back up to his house and telling his son his father wouldn’t be coming home is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I bring this up because a lot of you are new to Las Vegas and may not understand the severity of this desert heat.

I didn’t know what to do. I had never done research on what I should do. Had I called an ambulance from the club, he may still be here today. We are a very welcoming people and we LOVE that you have come here to be a part of this growing community. But we also want you to know the dangers and what to do if you are put in a situation like I was. Please take a few minutes and check out a couple of websites so that you are informed and have the ability to properly help someone in need. http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/heat-strokesymptoms-and-treatment http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/heat-stroke/ basics/symptoms/con-20032814 We need you around to advocate, talk about, grow, buy, sell, test, concentrate and Consume Cannabis, so be careful out there!!

Tokin’ With the Infamouswith

I’ve toked with a lot of infamous people. Hell, I’ve toked with a lot of famous people. This guy though, he holds the title of being both infamous and famous. Kevin Zinger is more than the owner of a record label and clothing company. He actually lives and breathes the music that the artists on his roster create. SRH clothing and Suburban Noize Records have been a part of my life for 25 years. I’m stoked to share with Vegas Cannabis Magazine readers, the man behind The Spade.

Zinger: I appreciate that, brother.

Hopper: When it comes to toking, do you find that some strains help with motivation, and others are good to chill out with after a long day? Zinger: You know, to be honest with you, I smoke when I get home from work. Up until my early 30’s, I smoked all day everyday.

Hopper: What’s next for SRH? Zinger: I want to take it back to the roots. SRH is in my DNA, it’s who I am. We made a conscious decision, obviously not for monetary reasons, but me and my partner decided to get back to doing this because we enjoy it. So, we made the decision to not be like Volcom, or any other company like it. We are SRH. We’ll be introducing new bands, new athletes, new people who support our culture. Right now, we’re celebrating 25 years of what we’ve built.

Zinger: It’s an honor. We started this thing as just a couple of guys from Mission Beach who knew that there were other people in the world who thought like us. We’ve all come together and united underneath one logo. Hopper: Do you want to address the Kottonmouth Kings issue, or do you want to leave it in the past?

Hopper: You work your ass off, I know this first hand. How do you stay grounded? Zinger: To be honest, it’s my friends. I’m the same person I was when I started this company 25 years ago and I still hang out with the same people. It’s good to keep the circle tight. A lot of new friends have come along the way, and that’s a beautiful thing. I don’t think we’ve lost track of that as a company and I know that I haven’t, as a person. Hopper: I can personally attest to that. You have always stayed true.

Hopper: The longevity of SRH, of the Spade, that’s something to be proud of, and I’m proud to call you my friend. Zinger: Thanks, brother. You too. I appreciate that. I’m proud to call you my friend.

Hopper: How you doin’ brother? Good to see you back in the old stompin’ grounds here in San Diego. How does it feel to know you’ve influenced so many people?

Zinger: To me, it’s in the past, but I don’t mind talking about it. It was a huge part of my history. I’m proud of what I accomplished with that band in the early years. People change and shit happens.

culture, before weed was something that Mom and Dad were okay with. Back in the early 90’s it was a gnarly thing to embrace marijuana. I’m proud of that. I’m proud of the lifestyle we created and the fact that we’re still doing it 25 years later.

Hopper: True that! You’ve crushed the stereotype that stoners are lazy. Dude, is there anything you can’t do? Hopper: Oh yeah, over the years we’ve smoked a mountain of weed together. Zinger: Yeah we have! Now, I smoke at night when I’m decompressing. On the weekends I smoke all day everyday. For me, I like a good body high, so certain strains do that for me. Hopper: After 25 years in the game, is there a moment, a memory, or a milestone that you are most proud of? Zinger: More than anything, I’m proud that most of the original crew that we started with 25 years ago are still here 25 years later. SRH is known to different people for different things. We were the first company to embrace weed

Zinger: Well, I can’t play center for the Lakers. Ha! I made my own way. SRH had zero investors, zero backers, we never sold out, though we had plenty of offers. We did everything ourselves, and the local stoner beach kids now know that they can grow up and own surf companies and skate companies, all that. Just because you smoke weed, doesn’t mean you can’t conquer the world. Hopper: For those who don’t know the real deal, tell them what SRH means. Zinger: Stoners Reaking Havoc. Hopper: Yes, yes, brother. SRH for life.

Hopper The Chronisseur Zinger: The weed culture has completely changed in the 25 years that I’ve been promoting it. It started as counter culture, now it’s mainstream. The plant is what brought us all together. Music, art, action sports, whatever…Marijuana brings together normal, like-minded people. My question is, where were all of these new weed people 20 years ago when we were trying to push legalization? Now corporate America is trying to take over the weed world and corner the market. That’s not cool. Hopper: True that! I witness it daily. People are strange. I always wrap up interviews by asking whoever I’m talking to, who they want to shout out. You, and the SRH brand are mentioned often. So, I have to ask, who inspires you? Who do you want to shout out? Zinger: Fuckin’ Rich Hopper from San Diego! Hopper: Thank you brother, thank you. Zinger: The list is endless. Every single band, from Sublime, 25 years ago to today, and artists like Risk. I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without such a solid group of friends. At the end of the day, I’m just a street kid who speaks two different languages. I speak street, and I speak corporate America. I can bridge that gap. Sony, Universal, EMI; I can talk to them to get records for my artists. At the same time, I can talk to my artists and be on the same level, so I’m appreciative to everybody who believes in me and has stuck with me. I have the same group of friends I had 25 years ago, so that is huge. Follow SRH at facebook.com/ srhproductions or visit them on the web at www.srh.com

higher education Las Vegas Film Festival By: Willie Spearmint

Nevada’s diverse college student population breaks down into two distinguishable groups, summer vacation and summer semester. Whether you’re taking a break from classes or stuck in summer school you’re at the mercy of the air conditioner as Nevada’s heat index slowly approaches its apex. Many students study some party and a few students wonder if the rest have any idea about the vote for adult use in November. Student leaders have been laying plans to raise awareness by collaborating with student governments and clubs and organization across the state. These plans are being scaled down to focus only on southern Nevada due to lack of resources. In other news Vegas Cannabis Ambassador @Vegas420runner Deuvall Dorsey of REDEFINE cannabis had a short film Runner’s High selected to be screened in the Las Vegas Film Festival (#LVFF). The festival describes itself as, “… a celebration of cultural discovery through the art of visual storytelling.” This controversial film Runner’s High discusses the unforeseen after effects

follow: @Vegas420runner on Twitter and Instagram #Vegas420runner #420runner

like: Nevada State College ScorpionsCAN experienced by the internet vlogger @Vegas420runner when he decided to share his medical marijuana patient status online in January 2015. The film gives an eerie description of what it’s like to be haunted by the negative stigma placed on cannabis. “What I liked about the film was how personal it is. It’s not just an exploration of a controversial issue – it’s a journey. The struggle of the race is tied to the drive for acceptance,” said NSC professor Adam Davis. Several other students from NSC, CSN and UNLV had their work featured in the film festival as well. Some critics question whether the cannabis use of the Vegas420runner is medicinal or recreational which the film conveniently never explicitly states. When questioned directly about these concerns Deuvall said he could neither confirm nor deny the rumors of recreational use. “Come run 30 miles with me and if you’re not in enough pain to try cannabis I’ll buy you a beer,” said the Vegas420runner. High fashion model Stacey Duncan ( I.G. @Staceeylduncan) attended the screening and had this to say, “As a longtime supporter of Deuvall, I’ve seen how he’s used cannabis to transcend obstacles and challenges like tobacco and alcohol.” Another popular related film produced by REDEFINE cannabis is 420lbs: The Story of a Weight loss Champion, about internet vlogger Jose Santos @ Run2Improve. Jose began his weight loss journey around 420lbs and he’s now down to 280lbs. He started by running 5ks and is now training for a half marathon. He has also co-featured in several videos produced by the Vegas420runner. Jose has an online following and he’s the biggest public supporter of the Vegas420runner in the local fitness and active lifestyle community. “I support his (Vegas420runner) decision to use

cannabis for rest and recovery, especially after running 20 miles or more,” said Jose. “Some runners manage the pain with pain pills and others use alcohol so if he wants to use medical marijuana I don’t see anything wrong with that.” www. Run2Improve.weebly.com REDEFINEcannabis.com destigmatizes cannabis by clearly connecting it to academic institutions, athletic events and college student organizations. Connecting cannabis businesses directly to academic campuses enhances brand reputation. Support higher education and promote your brand by placing a personal message on a brick to be placed on the NSC campus. The Nevada State Student Alliance (NSSA) in collaboration with the NSC Foundation and the office of Alumni Relations is pleased to announce the implementation of a new tradition – a brick fundraiser. Bricks are available in a 4x8” size with space for three lines and eighteen characters per line. Each space between letters and/or punctuation marks will be counted as a character. Inscriptions will be in ALL CAPITAL letters and will not be finalized until the NSC Office of Institutional Advancement approves your message. Bricks are available for $100 each. Your donation is tax-deductible to the extend allowed by law. For more information or to purchase a brick, please visit: nsc.edu/buyabrick Please send all nominations for Nevada Cannabis Student/Professor of the month to Redefine420pr@gmail.com Details on everything mentioned above can be found at www.REDEFINEcannabis.com

words from the inside Losing My 10th Amendment Rights By: Chris Williams

During the fall of 2012, I faced the most difficult decision of my life. Either go to trial in federal court, and risk spending the rest of my life behind bars, or take a plea deal and risk a much shorter sentence. Even today I am often explaining why I took the risk and went to trial, which is like going to war against the federal government. At the core of my personality and the heart of my beliefs; I am idealistic and stubborn, which affected my decision. In reality it was much more than just that. The essence of my battle was my disagreement with the Supreme Court’s ruling, [Gonzales v. Raich, 545 U.S (2005)], which I believe is conceptually weak and limits the structure of the 10th amendment of the United States Constitution, and is ripe to be overturned by the Supreme Court. I was optimistic and had grand visions of an acquittal by jury or a win in appellate court or the Supreme Court. However the odds and system were against me, just as they are for everyone prosecuted by the federal government. The conviction rate in federal court is over 95%. There are many reasons why the federal conviction rate is so high. I think the primary issues are overcharging by prosecutors and the fact that there is no prosecutorial oversight. The difficulties in my defense were due to the ruling in the Raich case. This eliminated my ability to use the state law as a defense or even mention the words medical marijuana during my trial, even though I operated a state legal medical marijuana company. You may not realize that the Gonzales v. Raich case establishes federal jurisdiction to regulate interstate drug activity via the controlled substances act. This is the law of the land and it trumps the 10th amendment of the United States Constitution. Even if a medical marijuana provider is obeying all state laws they can be prosecuted by the federal government. I faced an uphill battle to argue against the Supreme Court’s ruling, even though, like many others, I disagreed with their interpretation of the issue. As a citizen if the United States I felt that it was my duty

visit: www.FreeChrisWilliams.com to fight for my rights in court. What happened? I was found guilty of all charges against me. The outcome was dire. I faced a mandatory minimum sentence of 85 years in federal prison. You may not realize that there is no parole in the federal prison system, and I would serve almost all of the time, which would equate to a life sentence. I operated our medical marijuana company, Montana Cannabis, in strict compliance with Montana’s Medical Marijuana Act. However, compliance with state law is no defense in federal court. Even though the Montana Medical Marijuana Act was very vague and poorly drafted, we obeyed it strictly. Unfortunately, no matter how you argue the facts, marijuana is still illegal under the federal controlled substances act. The outpouring of public support saved me. After my guilty verdict, people from across the nation came to my rescue. Thousands of support letters flooded the judges office. The New York Times published a video article about my case, and soon a petition to president Obama demanding my pardon gained over 30,000 signatures, in less than a month. Not long after the judge in my case took rare actions which allowed me access to a post verdict negotiation. A separate federal judge was assigned to mediate the negotiations. The tension of the negotiation filled the air. After many hours we reached an agreement, I had to give up my rights to appeal and to fight my case, in exchange my sentence was reduced to 64 months in federal prison. You may be thinking, “how does this affect me?” If you are involved in the cannabis industry, you better believe it does! Since my trial several states have legalized recreational marijuana use as well as medical marijuana use. But still, federal law has not changed. You must understand, just because the current president has made policy

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • July 2016 • 54

changes that relax enforcement, does not mean that the controlled substances act has been changed. I am currently in prison with medical marijuana growers who were growing less than 50 plants in small cooperatives. Lance Gloor was recently sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for his state legal medical marijuana operation in Washington state. No matter what the size operation, the federal prosecutors can still enforce federal marijuana laws. This year we will elect a new president, and she or he could change federal policy towards marijuana. It could go either direction, more freedom or more restrictions. Federal law enforcement officers and federal prosecutors wait to attack when policies change. According to the United States Supreme Court and congress, marijuana is a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance, in the same category as heroin and crack cocaine. This classification makes it illegal for any purpose. Current presidential policy offers some leeway to states that enact their own laws and regulate cannabis as the citizens see fit. This limits your exposure to federal prosecution, but does not eliminate your risks. You must obey a complex and confusing federal policy and obey state laws, but still you have no guarantees. The Supreme Court ruling in Raich v. Gonzales establishes the precedent that should make you worry. It is important to know the scope of your risks and mitigate them. I have learned through my experience in federal court, which enables me to analyze this process, that otherwise I would know nothing about. I hope that you find my experience useful and valuable. bet it all on green Retiring Green, Relaxed, and Happy By: Jason Sturtsman

The Beatles, when they wrote the song “When I’m Sixty-Four”, pondered the question of quality of life in their later, post-hippy retirement. Cannabis has that ability to make life after 40 have our senior citizens singing, “I am the walrus, coo coo coochoo” for many years to come. Cannabis has many reported benefits including assistance with anxiety, depression, reduction in pain, antiinflammation, reduction of seizures and increased sleep. There are a multitude of treatment methods to access the benefits of cannabis for seniors. There are many modes of ingestion of cannabis, one of the most common being smoking or the combustion of cannabis material using a water pipe, rolling papers, or pipe – with the onset being more immediate and the duration of effectiveness being one to three hours. One of the healthiest and most recommended methods of inhalation is vaporization, which uses heat to release the medicinal parts of cannabis without the combustion of the plant material, eliminating possible carcinogens by the application of fire. During vaporization, using specialized vaporization devices, the effect is felt right away and the duration is one to three hours. Cannabis based edibles can take anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours to be effective with the duration

being as long as six to eight hours, depending on potency, cannabis strain and consumption amount. It is better to start with the smallest dose possible, preferably under 10mg of Delta9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to gauge your personal dosage based on your body size and chemistry, because some inexperienced individuals may feel psychological discomfort past that dosage mark. Topical cannabis creams can be applied to the area where pain is located at, with the onset of effects to be between five and twenty minutes, with the effectiveness of treatment being one to three hours. Topical cannabis creams are non-psychoactive and there is anecdotal evidence for treatment for arthritis and psoriasis. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disorder that results in memory loss, which includes changes in thinking and behavior. Cannabis is neuro-protective with Cannabidiol (CBD) shown to suppress formation of amyloid plaques as reported by Dr. Esposito in the British Journal of Pharmacology in 2007. Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and CBD were found to be neuroprotective antioxidants in 1998 in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, which means it slows the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and therefore aids in the preservation of memory. There are also numerous anecdotal stories of caregivers seeing improved sleep, reduced agitation and improvements in moods of those

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • July 2016 • 58

administered cannabis. Arthritis is an inflammation response in the joints and connective tissue that results in pain and swelling and can affect anyone at any age. Cannabis-based creams can be applied to the affected area of the arthritis and the cannabinoids bind to the CBD1 and CBD2 receptors in the skin, resulting in reduction of pain and swelling. Chronic pain throughout the body and degenerative disc disease resulting in back pain can be treated with cannabis because of its analgesic effects. In 2014, the Journal of the American Medical Association Internal Medicine reported that cannabis use reduced the need for opioid medicine. There is a lot of anecdotal information of cannabis users throwing out their pharmaceutical pain medicine for a natural treatment that does not result in any negative side effects. In the Beatles’ song “Strawberry Fields Forever” they sang, “Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see.” While the aging population has been given almost 50 years of pharmaceutical solutions, some patients may find themselves looking for alternative, natural treatments to relieve pain and treat ailments. Cannabis is one of the alternative treatment options that can supplement traditional opiate based medical care, to give our seniors a pain-free life in a kaleidoscopic state of bliss. patient news Big Changes for Nevada Medical Marijuana Patient Card Applicants

very soon, their will no longer be a need for patients to visit the DMV upon approval to obtain their state-issued medical marijuana card. In the coming months, the DMV will automatically mail approved patients their medical marijuana cards using the photo that they currently have on file.

I recently had the chance to speak with Rianna Durrett, Esq, the Executive Director of the Nevada Dispensary Association who filled me in on big changes to the Nevada medical marijuana card application process.. Up until now, patients applying for a Nevada medical marijuana card have endured a 3-6 month wait time before receiving approval. But, most recently, with the State allowing applicants to obtain the application online instead of mailing in a request for one, many patients have experienced a much shorter wait time. In hopes of rectifying this situation further, the State of Nevada recently opened a local office to service the needs of our local medical patients. This office, with the assistance of our local dispensaries, can provide same day approval for medical marijuana card applicants. In addition,

According to the Nevada Dispensary Association, medical marijuana numbers have been rising in more than just patient card approvals. The state’s total marijuana excise tax has grown considerably since June 2015 where it sat at just $469.07 total. By contrast, the March 2016 excise tax total was $88,308.09. The total for the fiscal year, to date, is a staggering $317,573.94, with $238,180.17 of that amount earmarked for the Distributive School Account (making up 75% of collections on marijuana taxation) and $79,393.77 earmarked for the Division of Public and Behavioral Health.

By: Stephanie Shehan

Currently, the Nevada office can accommodate up to 25 applicants per day. Applicants are seen by appointment only. Patients should visit a physician

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • July 2016 • 66

who provides medical marijuana recommendations first. Then, stop by a participating dispensary for review of the application. Once reviewed, the dispensary will schedule an appointment at the State’s local office. If approved a temporary, 60-day letter will be issued which will allow the patient to immediately visit a dispensary to purchase medical cannabis. As of May, there were 18,599 active medical marijuana cardholders in the state of Nevada. This time last year, Nevada had only 9,345 cardholders. As the number of cardholders continues to rise, a more streamlined application process is greatly appreciated. FOR A LIST OF PARTICIPATING DISPENSARIES PLEASE VISIT WWW. Boasting greater than 80% THC content, who cares about the terpene profile…?! THC - 80.9%

Durban Poison

(Live Resin) Badder is one of those substances that grabs a hold of your nose and hypnotizes you. I better try this one myself to make sure that it’s not “Poison”. Looking over each shoulder, I break off a generous shard of this thin icing-like badder paddie and heat the nail. While the nail cools, I smell the container once again, because my olfactory nerves are hypnotized I tell ya. I hit that rig hard like a champ, and the official decision is in. My body and mind appreciate this badder to the fullest. The whip smells, tastes, and feels amazing. The nose knows best. And at minutely 1ppm, they extracted damned near ALL of the butane. THC - 73.0% CBD - 0.16% Terpinene - 7.95 mg/g a-Terpinolene - 7.44 mg/g Ocimene - 3.88 mg/g b-Pinene - 1.61 mg/g a-Pinene - 1.11 mg/g

Purple Venom (Live Resin)

Badder can mellow out the most wound up individuals. Heavy myrcene content delivers a sedative effect. Relax and smoke on yet another wonderfully-scented hash made in the labs of Green Therapeutics. This one gives off the scent of lavender and tastes like cotton candy on the exhale. Those of you who dab need to try Purple Venom. It hits your face right away and makes you want to sleep. THC - 74.62% CBD - 0.21% b-Myrcene - 10.27 mg/g a-Terpinolene - 2.89 mg/g Limonene - 1.65 mg/g Linalool - 0.98 mg/g a-Humulene - 0.34 mg/g

Durban Poison (Live Resin) Shatter is fire! This stuff will make

your eyes twisted and your eyelids sit low. We dabbed this wonderful blackcherry tasting shatter on a quartz nail. The sound of “Mmmmmmm” went around the room as the booklet of Moxie Durban Poison got passed around and disappeared into our lungs. Carene is responsible for calming the central nervous system. THC - 76.0% CBD - 0.17% Terpinene - 6.79 mg/g Ocimene - 4.75 mg/g a-Terpinolene - 4.00 mg/g b-Myrcene - 2.15 mg/g b-Pinene - 2.03 mg/g a-Pinene - 1.75 mg/g Delta-3-Carene - 1.35 mg/g Limonene - 1.31 mg/g

Purple Venom

(Live Resin) Shatter looks freaking gorgeous, and has a sugary-sweet taste of caramelized pineapple. The stability of this shatter is perfect for wax pens and dab rigs alike. The effects are heavy on the eyes, and pleasant to the palate. The terpene profile boasts high results in Myrcene and Ocimene, making this extremely fruity and fragrant. THC - 79.8% b-Myrcene - 6.80 mg/g b-Caryophyllene - 2.96 mg/g Ocimene - 4.00 mg/g Terpinolene 5.85 mg/g Terpinene - 6.29 mg/g Linalool - 1.79 mg/g

Fortune Cookies

(Cured Flower Run) Shatter is very floral with a nice punch immediately on the exhale. Fortune Cookies has extremely high levels of myrcene, making this concentrate potently sedative. Smoke it at night, or when you have time to rest up. Moxie blasted this Deep Roots flower perfectly. I like the collab labeling on the lids, nice touch, Green Therapeutics. THC - 70.97% CBD - 0.15% b-Myrcene - 14.28 mg/g Limonene - 8.41 mg/g a-Terpinolene 2.5 mg/g a-Pinene - 1.51 mg/g b-Pinene - 2.30 mg/g Linalool - 1.18 mg/g

Jack Herer (Trim Run) Shatter boasts

a deep, woodsy exhale and tastes piney on the after-taste. The extremely low levels of Myrcene suggest a cerebral high, so enjoy this concentrate to get your day fired up. Humulene is an appetite suppressant. Nice to see that terp hit the radar. THC - 76.7% b-Caryophyllene - 3.19 mg/g Terpinene - 4.41mg/g a-Terpinolene - 4.13mg/g Ocimene - 2.16 mg/g Humulene - 1.16 mg/g

Asteroids (Trim Run) Shatter is a golden-

orange sticky shatter, that will help you chill out and get you pretty faded. The substance is stretchy, and you can pull off dabs easier than snapping them off. Asteroids tastes more Earthy than sweet, so if you like that OG flavor give this a try. The terpene profile is a bit low, but there are numerous terpenes that show up on the chart over 1 mg/gram, giving Asteroids a well-balanced report card. Humulene is also found in hops and cloves, and is known to be an anti-inflammatory and also promote tumor necrosis. Get your Asteroids together. GT Baby! THC - 76.3% CBD - 1.5% B-Caryophyllene - 2.57 mg/g b-Myrcene - 1.56 mg/g b-Pinene - 1.01 mg/g Limonene - 2.61 mg/g Linalool - 2.35 mg/g a-Humulene - 1.03 mg/g

Island Sweet Skunk (Live

Resin) Shatter tastes like fruit punch Kool-Aide, and gives you a pleasant head change. This another bhomb Moxie product with a well-rounded terpene profile. High in Limonene, this flavorful terpene will hit you with it’s citrus qualities. The high Pinene content will act as a bronchodilator, and open up your lungs as you open your mind. THC - 77.01% CBD - 0.13% b-Myrcene - 5.76 mg/g a-Terpinolene - 6.27 mg/g Limonene - 4.03 mg/g b-Pinene - 2.0 mg/g a-Pinene - 1.86 mg/g

Sesame Encrusted Ahi Tuna

INGREDIENTS: 4 Ahi Steaks ¼ Cup Mixed, Toasted Sesame Seeds ¼ Cup Sesame Oil ¼ Gram Oil (winterized Pura Co2 oil, 200mg THC was used for this recipe) DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat sesame oil on low heat in small bowl, combine Co2 oil and stir bringing the two oils together as one oil. Let cool. 2. Place toasted sesame seeds on a plate.

Pat dry tuna steaks with a paper towel to remove excess water. Dredge and press tuna

in sesame seeds, coating the tuna evenly. Sprinkle with more seeds as needed. 3. In a medium frying pan over medium-high heat, warm the oil until just smoking. Frying two portions at a time, arrange the tuna steaks in the pan (do not overcrowd) and cook until the sesame seeds start to turn golden underneath, about one minute. Turn the tuna over and cook for one minute. Sear the edges of the tuna for 15 seconds on each edge. Transfer the tuna to a plate that is covered with a paper towel, patting to gently soak up any excess oil. Repeat with remaining tuna portions. Transfer tuna to a cutting board and cut in half to make triangle.

PATIENT PROFILE: Anthony the Survivor By: Chef Fred

Cooking with cannabis and catering to patients has been such a treat. I am honored to have an opportunity to reach out and help as many people as I have. I feel education is the key to creating a cannabis consciousness and better understanding of the benefits the plant has to offer. My newest patient is “Anthony the Survivor”, a two-year old little boy from Southern California. Anthony has brain cancer and his family reached out to me in September of 2015. The family was scared and needed education on the full spectrum of available oils. The oncologist at Kaiser Permanente was ready to let Anthony start a high CBD, low THC oil to see how he responded. This oil is non-psychoactive and will not leave the patient feeling over-medicated. The first regimen worked great. The MRI showed there was a decrease in the size of the tumor from 10.5 to 7.3. He is finishing the second regimen now and is getting ready for his third. This meal is dedicated to my little survivor and his family. I am honored to help his family with education and quality products that heal. I have a friend for life. For anyone able to donate, a Go Fund Me account has been set up to assist Anthony’s family with medical expenses: https://www.gofundme.com/AnthonysHSOoil
