Happy New Year! As 2020 comes to an end and we begin the new year, many of us have likely been left wondering what the heck just happened. The pandemic, the shutdown, the loss of jobs, kids out of school, hospitals on overload, and the loss of loved ones has been overwhelming to say the least. And to top it off, it doesn't look like this will be over anytime soon. As the vaccine becomes available, some are on board but most are not. It will be interesting to see where we go from here. It is our hope that at some point our amazing state will get back to what it once was. It is also our hope that through all of this, people have learned that life is short and that there are much more important things than money and status. Love your significant other, your children and your family as if there were no tomorrow. And, take one day at a time. In this issue, our Publisher, Bill Shehan had the chance to check out the CAMP cultivation and production facility. Aaron Nino and the CAMP team are doing amazing things in the solventless product realm. And best of all, they have not lost sight of our medical cannabis patients. This month we also have a great interview with Evan Marder from Fleur Cannabis. Evan's passion for the cannabis plant is evident to those that know him and I had he chance to candidly discuss his entry into the legal industry and how he got to where he is today. Enjouy this issue!

Solventless Products for >>> Healthier Consumption An Interview and Facility Tour with Aaron Nino and the CAMP Team

>>>By: Bill Shehan

CAMP is a brand born from the idea of connecting with nature, connecting with others and connecting with yourself. The award-winning brand is led by Aaron Nino, a production manager with more than 15 years of cannabis experience as well as a variety of accolades and awards for his products. Under the award-winning CAMP brand, which is focused on solventless extraction and terpene-rich flower, Aaron and his team developed the first solventless rosin cartridge in the state of Nevada and they are dedicated to providing quality cannabis products, including flower, cartridges, disposables, and concentrates. I recently had the pleasure of touring the CAMP facility to check out their cultivation and production lab. BILL SHEHAN: Thank you for allowing us to tour your facility. Are you the first

company here locally doing solventless rosin-based products? AARON NINO: Thank you for taking the time to visit. We are the first and only company in Nevada to create a solventless line of cartridges and disposables. We started our CAMP line two years ago, I’ve always wanted to bring a solventless line to our Nevada consumers. BILL: I love the CAMP line. I am not usually a big fan of vape cartridges, especially when they have added botanical terpenes but when I tasted the CAMP cartridges, just knowing that no solvents or additives were involved made them that much better. AARON: We actually used to introduce steam distilled terpenes into our vapes to get the rosin to burn evenly. But since our new Director of Cultivation Bill Campbell came on board, our flower has been much higher quality allowing us to mechanically separate the terpenes out of the rosin, cold cure, and reintroduce them. So basically, we take the rosin, press the terpenes out of it and then add them back into our vape cartridges giving them their strain specific, robust flavor. CAMP carts and disposables are 100% cannabis extracts – something we are very proud of. BILL: That is awesome. Will we be able to see how the rosin is pressed today? AARON: We will do some pressing for you today. We will also show you how we make our oil, how we separate terpenes and give you a peek into our cultivation. BILL: Sounds good, let’s do this.

12

AARON: Let’s go into our extraction room, which by the way is only 800

square feet. The majority of our facility is for cultivation so what we are doing on the extraction side in this very small area is phenomenal. Working in such a small space allows me to oversee everything ultimately ensuring that good quality shows in our products. With our solventless products, the phrase garbage in/garbage out couldn’t be more true. The end result always relies on beginning with high quality flower. Since Bill has come on board, we have had some amazing flower to work with. We have been able to expand our variety. In the beginning we had a few staples but not the wide variety of strain specific cartridges we felt our customers wanted. Now, we have a diverse array of strain-specific vapes like our Andromeda and Bahama Mama which have been surprisingly flavorful and fruitful yielders. BILL: You also have the ability to source good flower from other local cultivators who may or may not have a production license. AARON: Yes. In the beginning, because we were having some challenges with our own cultivation, I sourced flower from the awesome team over at Green Life Productions. In order to produce great quality hash and rosin the grower needs to have the end product in mind from the moment they plant the seed. Quality hash comes from quality flower, period. BILL: I can’t wait to see your rosin pressing magic. There are only three factors to consider: heat, time and pressure, right? AARON: Exactly. And, you will see that when we press our hash, it’s just a little bit different depending on the starting material. To make rosin pressing more consistent, we use a

Pure Pressure machine which saves all of the information by various strains and ensures consistency every time we press. We are hashing old school right now with the washer and bubble bags until our new commercial equipment arrives. BILL: It’s awesome that the time tested method of using bubble bags to make hash is still being used. AARON: Right, that’s the way we used to do it. That method will always work. As we expand our facility, we will bring in new equipment to make the process quicker and more efficient. I want you to meet our Extraction Specialist, Paul Ortiz. Paul is going to show you how we make our hash. He has a love and passion for this and really has the process dialed in. BILL: It’s cold in here, what’s the temperature? AARON: Between 30-45 degrees. PAUL: It has to stay cold, and with the door closed, it gets even colder. AARON: If it doesn’t stay cold, the resin heads will not be captured like we want them to. The hash likes the cold and once we started doing it this way, both our quality and yields increased. The trichomes and the resin want to collect and if it is hot, it just isn’t ideal. Paul, go ahead and show us what you are doing in here. PAUL: I start with about 5 gallons of icy cold water here in a bucket. You don’t want too much ice in there, but you do want the water extremely cold. As you can see, the bucket is lined with a variety of different size screens. Once the buckets are fully prepared, I add my flower. As the flower moves through the various screens, finally making it through the smallest screen, this is where we catch the best stuff. Next, everything goes into the freeze dryer for about 24 hours. The end result is a beautiful batch of hash. AARON: Most cultivation facilities are not growing specifically for hash. Since our facility is growing for hash, we have to make sure that our flower is high quality and that the strains we grow are consistently giving us a good end result. There are certain strains you focus on for hash. For example, GMO is a very heavy

13

hasher. The yield is greasy and that’s where you get your full melt hash. Right now, Bill is growing a First Class Funk for us which is GMO crossed with Jet Fuel. We are also currently in the process of a pheno hunt for new strains. Before we go into the pressing room, step in here and let me show you how we make our RSO. BILL: The fact that you guys are working in such a small space is commendable. It is deceiving from the outside because the building looks huge. AARON: As in most facilities, the majority of the space is utilized for cultivation. Once I came on board here, our direction changed a bit as we started going full force towards solventless products. Here is where we make our RSO which is primarily used by medical cannabis patients. By using this Roto Evaporator, we are able to complete the extraction while reclaiming our ethanol. And, The Source+ has a special, needs-based program set up specifically for medical patients to purchase RSO in bulk at our cost. Medical patients also really like our 1:1 solventless rosin cartridge made with our Connor’s Comfort strain. This is one of our best tasting cartridges the flavor is very robust. And, our 1:1 CAMP tincture which is also made using our high CBD Connor’s Comfort strain is another customer favorite. BILL: It is so awesome to know that we still have companies that are equally as focused on our medical cannabis patients as they are on the recreational consumers. What is going on with that machine over there? Are you extracting terpenes? AARON: Yes, steam distilled terpenes, in my opinion these terpenes are the purest terpenes to inhale, other than mechanically separated terpenes. Here, smell these Grapefruit Durban terpenes. BILL: Nice! Those smell amazing. AARON: The next room over is where we press our flower and hash. BILL: Cool, let’s check it out.

14

AARON: Paul is going to show you how this press is used for hash. PAUL: This machine stores the settings for each strain that we press to help maximize our efficiencies. We are just waiting for the machine to cool down because we were pressing flower earlier which requires more heat. Now that it has cooled down, I fill my bag with the hash and load it on to the machine. As the hash gets hotter, the trichomes melt. Keep in mind, this machine brings down 1,000 pounds of pressure when we are pressing hash. Now I just let it do its thing for about 3-5 minutes. The amount of time it takes usually depends on what strain we are using. BILL: Yah, I have a small press at home and there have been times that I press my flower and get nothing out of it and assume that I did something wrong.

SUNDAE BEST

PAUL: You’ve probably not done anything wrong, it’s probably just the strain you are pressing that is giving you no yield. BILL: Man, that looks great. You guys really have it down to a science here. I understand you had some issues within the cultivation which I am assuming have been rectified. AARON: Yes, Bill Campbell has put a ton of work into making our cultivation top of the line. Take a peek into our grow room. BILL: Wow! Your plants look healthy and smell amazing. I cannot wait to try these newly grown strains. Thank you for allowing us into your facility.

BAHAMA MAMA

AARON: Thank you for coming by. Please plan to revisit in a month or two to see the facility after our expansion. CULTIVATOR SPOTLIGHT:

BY Stephanie Shehan

EVAN MARDER - DIRECTOR OF CULTIVATION AT FLEUR CANNABIS Anyone who knows Evan Marder also knows that he is extremely passionate about cannabis. His love for the plant shines through in his work as a cultivator. I recently had the chance to sit down with him to chat about his work at Fleur and the path that led him there. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: What is your title at Fleur Cannabis? Were you in the industry prior to working at Fleur? EVAN MARDER: I am currently the Director of Cultivation at Fleur Cannabis. Previously, I was the Chief Operating Officer and Founder of Matrix NV. STEPHANIE: What led you to the cannabis industry? EVAN: This is a long story, but I'll do my best to tell a very condensed version. I started growing when I was 16. I bought a growth chamber called a Phototron (they still make and sell them) and started growing in a closet in my father’s basement. That got me started. Throughout the 90's I grew indoors using early stage ballasts with metal halide and high pressure sodium lighting. I did a lot of reading back then to hone in growing methods. In the early 2000's I got a patient card here in Nevada and set up a

18

grow room at my house with the hopes that Nevada would eventually take on the business model of California, where they allowed patient grows to sell to dispensaries. After many years it became obvious Nevada would never adopt that model, but in 2013 it became apparent Nevada was going to set up regulations for cannabis businesses. In late 2013, I started looking into and studying what it would take to become a cannabis business owner in Nevada. After months of research, in February 2014, I decided to risk everything I had and came up with a business plan, a business name (Matrix) and started shopping my plan to investors. Again, long story short, I was able to attract investors to my project by June 2014 and that's when all the fun began. STEPHANIE: What sparked your passion for growing? EVAN: I started growing in 1986 when I was 16. It's been a passion of mine ever since. I never had a mentor, it was more about figuring things out for myself and using what my mom had taught me about gardening. My mom grew up on and around farms and has always been an avid gardener with an outstanding green thumb, so I guess it's fair to say she passed that on to me. From the time I was about 17 on,

I also read everything I could get my hands on about cannabis. Before legalization we were all really afraid of getting busted, so I always felt I had to be very careful where I sourced my information and not really discuss it with others. By 2006, I would say there was a decent amount of online growers forums. I did a lot of reading on those forums over the years, especially later on to understand the commercial side of the business. For example, there were a decent amount of discussions about mechanical engineering and how to control environments, which looking back, none of it was really good info, but it helped me to understand the challenges of scaling up from a 400 square foot room to a 30,000 square foot building. STEPHANIE: Tell us about the work you have done at Fleur. EVAN: Fleur Cannabis has been the ultimate thrill of my cannabis industry life, which to me says a lot because I've had some major ups and downs since getting into the legal side of things. We've created a very healthy work environment that the plants thrive in. One of the things I've focused on in my career in cannabis has been team building, and Fleur is no exception. Fleur is now staffed with great people that excel in their specific departments. Back when

I started Matrix, our core group on the ground was made up of family and friends, and then we built around that with people that shared the same vision. We built a great team filled with people who were passionate about the plant who mostly wanted to stand out and succeed in this industry partly because of their love of cannabis and the culture. We've essentially done the same thing with Fleur. At Fleur, I have also had the luxury of working for great people who appreciate me and the team we've built. They allow us to do what we do best with no micro-management, and I can't stress how important that is. I've seen several cultivations that were in a good place end up failing because the investors thought they knew more than the people they originally hired to grow for them. They ended up micromanaging the business to a point where they forced those out that were initially responsible for the company’s success. I am also a firm believer that the plants respond to the energy of who is around them. I've seen first hand examples of this countless times throughout my life, so to me it's very important that the staff has a constant positive attitude and positive energy. One of our jobs as managers is to make sure everyone on our staff is well taken care of and supported with the tools they need to succeed on a daily basis. Fleur pays our employees more than most cultivations offer, and we also offer benefits to all of our employees, which sadly seems to be somewhat rare on the cultivation side of the industry. The ownership at Fleur and Evergreen Organix and I see eye to when it comes to this. My philosophy coming into this industry was that I always kind of wanted to be the Google of cannabis. Google has a reputation of being an amazing employer that takes great care of their staff at a very high level. Everyone at Google wants to be at work when they're at work. Granted, we're not the corporate giant Google is, but providing that same level of a positive work environment is very important to us, and will always be part of our goal here at Fleur. As far as actual cannabis is concerned, we are constantly hunting for new strains and doing our best to get the best results out of the strains we currently offer. We of course want to make sure we put out flower with high cannabinoid percentages, but we also really focus on terpene production. We encourage everyone to look at how high and how deep our terpene profiles run on our test results at dispensaries and compare them to other cultivation numbers. We also have a lot of

great new strains in the works, some of which are testing around 4% total terpenes with total THC numbers in the high twenties. STEPHANIE: Tell us a little about your growing technique/style. EVAN: Fleur Cannabis is a Clean Green Certified cultivation facility (Clean Green Certification is one of the only certificates for a cannabis cultivation to be certified 'organic’ and is the most respected certification in our industry) utilizing sustainable, completely organic growing practices, just like Mother Nature intended. All our plants are grown in no-till living soil using our own hybridized version of Korean Natural Farming. Our composts and fertilizers are made in-house using all organic components, including plant material taken straight from our plants and organic fruits sourced from local farmers. This organic method of growing brings out the full potential of the plant, naturally, and we feel very strongly that it provides the cleanest, tastiest cannabis possible. We do not spray pesticides or fungicides and never use commercial fertilizers. I've used most every method possible to grow cannabis over the years, but after delving into the organic side of things and doing it at scale, I've come to the conclusion there is no better way to grow. For me it will forever be an organic style of growing from here on out. In my mind there is no better way, and commercially I feel growing organically makes the most sense. STEPHANIE: Are there any particular obstacles that are related to growing indoors? Do you also have experience growing outdoors? EVAN: There are tons of obstacles growing indoors, most of which start with creating the perfect environment. Millions and millions of dollars have been lost in this industry with people who have built cultivation facilities only to fail miserably. It's definitely not easy and not the golden goose so many people think it is. When we were designing Matrix there was no blueprint you could purchase, no one offering solid information on how to do this. We had to figure it all out for ourselves. We spent hundreds of hours over the course of 2015 and 2016 with general contractors, architects, mechanical engineers, and electricians formulating a plan. No one back then had a clue. A

lot of 'consultants' claimed they did, but very few actually knew how to scale up and meet the build-out demands Nevada created. 2015 for me was mostly spent in construction meetings and behind a computer screen developing the floor plan and business plan for Matrix. The amount of dedication it takes to do a project like this, and then the time to manage it, is something that I think most people can't really grasp. Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I was a single guy with no kids and really nothing to lose, so it was a gamble I could afford to take. Had I been married with children I highly doubt I would have had the time and the finances to get through it all. The lead up just to get the business started was all incredibly time consuming, expensive and challenging. All that said, I haven't even touched on the challenges of actually growing once your business is off the ground. It's fair to say you can take any problem you could potentially have in a home grow and multiply it by a million. As far as my outdoor experience is concerned, that has been limited. I was part of an outdoor grow in Florida many years back, but not on a level that I can add significant insight on. I tried growing outdoors in Delaware too, but the climate there and the soil (it's clay based) aren't good to grow cannabis. STEPHANIE: Are there any particular obstacles related to growing in Nevada? Any restrictions? EVAN: I love growing in Nevada. Aside from the hot summers which present challenges with HVAC, the humidity here is great, and we don't have an abundance of natural predators that attack the plant that you'd have to worry about as a grower, like in other parts of the country. Don't get me wrong, we still face the same challenges, it just seems to me based on my experience as a grower here to not be as prevalent, at least in Clark County. As far as the regulations and the state are concerned, I've always said there is no state that does privileged licensing better than Nevada. Nevada has a long history of governing taboo industries like gaming and prostitution, and in my opinion that experience played a part in creating what I feel is the best cannabis program in the world. The regulations here are very strict and buttoned up and I feel that has played a large part in the reason why we

19

have not seen any federal interference. My experience with the state regulators has been that they are tough but fair. They want to make sure Nevada continues to be the gold standard for the cannabis industry, and I am all for that. Of course there have been growing pains, especially in regards to working with the seed to sale tracking system we are forced to use, but that is to be expected, especially in a budding industry that is still federally illegal. STEPHANIE: How difficult is it to abide by lab guidelines? Any particular limits or restrictions that you would like to see changed?

EVAN: I have been told that the average commercial failure rate for flower in Nevada is around 30%. That does not mean that most of the flower grown here is garbage, that's not the case at all. This speaks to the fact of how stringent and difficult to pass our testing is here in Nevada. A while ago I read a study that was done some years back that found something like over 80% of the flower grown in California couldn't pass testing in Nevada. 80%! I think it's fair to say that the cannabis on Nevada dispensary shelves is the safest, cleanest cannabis in the world, and it's all because of the testing that we have to pass in order to be able to sell our flower. Nevada tests for a vast array of microbials, mycotoxins, heavy metals, pesticides and fungicides. The thing most cultivators fail for is microbials, and most of the time it's for Aspergillus and/or yeast and mold. Aspergillus was added to the testing protocol a couple years into the program and let me tell you, that created a whole new headache for cultivators and I think a lot of them are still trying to figure out how to keep from failing for it. That said, I'm very proud to say that here at Fleur we are passing over 99% of our tests, and that has a lot to do with the fact that we grow organically and that we have implemented a lot of procedures to make sure we always test clean, all of which are completely safe and organic in nature. There are companies in this state that use all sorts of post harvest mold remediation techniques to pass the testing, including the use of radiation. I think it's important for people to know we don't do anything like that. We are old school, we grow clean cannabis using very clean, natural organic methods. No mold remediation is necessary for us simply

because we never have any mold on our flower, and we don't use nasty pesticides and fungicides to ward off pests and pathogens. Just clean and green! STEPHANIE: Any tips for new cultivators entering the industry? EVAN: I get asked this a lot. First off, unfortunately social media isn't a great place to ask for a job. It's a great place to learn about a cultivation you may want to work at, or to see an ad that a certain place is hiring, but I rarely see people get hired through a social media platform. It's usually through something like Indeed or Craigslist, or through word of mouth. Also, in my experience reputable cultivation facilities most of the time won't hire a grower for a grower position right off the bat. Usually people start off as a trimmer or a packager and work their way up to a cultivator position. My best advice would be first and foremost to have a great work ethic. Be punctual and communicate well. Be respectful and easy to get along with. Understand what your goals are and what you want to achieve in this industry and work towards them knowing everything takes time. Hone in on the craft and read as much as possible and if you're fortunate enough to be growing at home, grow using the same methods you want to work on and master on a commercial level. Also, please understand being a cultivator is a physically demanding job and it's not easy. There's a decent amount of heavy lifting and back breaking hard work. This is indoor farming after all. I've seen people over the years not realize what the job entails and get turned off pretty quick after they realize how physically demanding it can be. STEPHANIE: We have seen some great things coming out of Fleur recently. Any favorite strains you want to talk about? EVAN: I am a big fan of all of our current strains. To name some, Orange Cookies and LA Confidential are two of our cult classics that I really like. The Face on Fire we produce is incredible. She's consistently testing above 27% with a 3%+ terpene profile. We have some new strains on the market that I'm a big fan of, Sun God, Zest, Strawberry Cough and Live Fire to name a few. There's a new strain just getting started in the pipeline that we named Bushido OG. This strain was named after another cannabis community

brother, Master WIn. Master Win was a dear friend of our grow manager, who, along with his 2 dogs, unfortunately died in the California wildfires this past year. We feel good about giving him this homage as this was a guy that had an incredible life story that ended way too early. The strain is a cross of Wookies-n-Cream x Lemon OG and is testing around 27% total THC with a terpene profile around 4%. She's also leaning heavily on the sativa side. Our first year at Fleur we really focused on developing sativa dominant strains, now we're hunting for more indica dominant strains. Strain development is a constant work in progress that I would like to see continue for as long as I'm around and involved, which hopefully will be a long, long time. STEPHANIE: How about the new high CBD strains which are amazing, especially for patients - tell us about them. EVAN: We also like to focus on developing 1:1 CBD/THC strains. In addition to Fire Angel, which is a 2:1 CBD/THC strain that was here before I came on, so far we have two new CBD/THC strains, CBDiesel and Do Si Durban. We like the Do Si Durban, but CBDiesel is the real standout here. It's a CBD cross off of Super Sour Diesel and has the same terpene profile with an outstanding 1:1 combination of around 10% - 12% CBD and around 10% - 12% THC. I'm a huge fan of this strain and am hopeful everyone out there will appreciate it as much as I do. It's just a perfect strain for any time, day or night. STEPHANIE: You have a solid team working with you at Fleur, anyone you want to mention? EVAN: Absolutely! We have a great staff that I would love to give a shoutout to. When I arrived at Fleur we already had an outstanding grow manager, Sven Blum. Sven has been an absolute rock star and a pleasure to work with. He is a core part of the company and is incredibly passionate about what we do here. He is our in-house pheno-hunter and manages and guides the cultivation team on a daily basis. He has simply been outstanding. Our plant and soil scientist, Nate Weeden, is a guy I got to know while I was at Matrix and was someone I always wanted to work with. When this project came up Nate was working at one of the labs in town and jumped at

the opportunity. Nate is a major talent that worked his way through UNLV waiting tables and obtained a Biochemistry degree. He has focused his knowledge on plants, especially cannabis. Nate oversees soil and plant health and is responsible for bringing the method of Korean Natural Farming to Fleur that we currently use today. I'd also like to give a shoutout to my brother, Jay Marder, he is our general manager and my right hand man. I'd be nowhere without him. Also an old dear friend of mine, Ron Carrell. Ron is a Vegas native and long time friend who is our facility manager and does an outstanding job making sure the plants have the optimal growing conditions to thrive. Last but not least, shoutout to Mason Garrett and our packaging department for getting all of our products out the door in a timely, efficient manner, as well as Rick Busack and our trim team for all of their excellent trim work, and of course our cultivators and porter. They all crush it for us on a daily basis. These are the unsung heroes of a cultivation facility. The amount of tedious work that goes into getting our products out the door is more than most people can wrap their heads around. Last, but definitely not least, I'd like to thank Jerry Velarde and Jillian Nelson and her family for this opportunity with Fleur and for all of their support. Jerry and I have built a friendship and working relationship that is one of the highlights of my professional life, and working with the Nelson's has been nothing short of outstanding. I've found them all to be great people.

some seeds reads this article and is nice enough to send me some...lol. Another personal favorite is Strawberry Cough and we're growing a great pheno of that strain at Fleur now. The funny thing is, a lot of people ask me to grow a lot of old school strains, but the problem is that a lot of those strains test below 18% and our market is driven by THC potency. That limits what we can grow. I'm hopeful with time and education that will change. People need to realize you can get a great high off of something with a 17% THC range and a good terpene profile, it's not all about THC. STEPHANIE: Anything new and exciting coming up from Fleur? EVAN: We will be developing many new strains over the coming years. We have a MAC cross we will be releasing soon, as well as the Bushido OG and others STEPHANIE: How can readers follow you? EVAN: Please give me a follow on Instagram @Evan.matrix.mmj I post a lot

of pictures of the grow on a weekly basis. There are a decent amount of impostors out there that steal my image and pics on IG and Facebook, so please make sure to follow the right account. I only have the one, evan.matrix.mmj. Also, please give us a follow @Fleurcannabisnv STEPHANIE: Anything you want to add? EVAN: First off, thank you for doing this interview! Everyone at the magazine has always been great folks to get to know and I admire and value what you have added to the cannabis landscape in Nevada. You've been here since the beginning and I've always been a fan. I'd also really like to thank the Nevada cannabis community for all of the love and support I've received over the years. Like many of you out there, my journey in this industry has not been an easy one. The support I've received from so many of you has been a motivational factor for me that has kept me going through thick and thin, and is everything I could ever hope for from the community that I've always loved and wanted to be a part of. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.

STEPHANIE: Do you have a favorite strain? Being a cultivator, what do you look for when purchasing your own personal-use cannabis products? EVAN: Being from the northeast originally I've always had an affinity for the gassier strains like Sour Diesel. Back in the late 80's and early 90's we were seeing a lot of Skunk #1, and to this day that is the strain I've always loved the most. Problem is, I haven't seen it since the mid 90's. I know some of the Cheese strains are close in smell and effect, but trust me, nothing that I've seen has matched that Skunk we were getting back in the day. Personally I think growers just stopped growing it because it had such a strong odor it made it hard to mask the smell. My belief is most growers moved away from it because it would end up getting them busted. Hopefully someone out there that kept Photo: David Singh Reddish // IG- @Davindersingh_photography

Endocannabinoid System with Sunil Pai, MD

This article continues my series of interviews with a licensed clinical practitioner regarding the central role of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in human health. This installment covers the dosing and biphasic response curves of cannabinoids, the role of inflammation in disease and health, and the active and passive states of CB1 and CB2 receptors in the human ECS. Sunil Pai, MD is an internationally recognized expert in integrative medicine based in Albuquerque, New Mexico and author of the critically acclaimed 2016 book An Inflammation Nation. He is a lecturer and a contributing author to medical textbooks and scientific journals. Pai is a practicing doctor who combines an evidencebased approach with 20 years of clinical experience. Each year, he educates thousands of physicians and medical professionals about the nuanced biochemistry involved in the administration of hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes for the treatment of a variety of disease states and conditions. Curt Robbins: “Thank you for taking time from your clinical schedule to talk, Dr. Pai.” Sunil Pai, MD: “Thanks. I really enjoy the opportunity to speak with you, Curt, and help your students and readers better understand the human endocannabinoid system and how they might benefit from cannabis and cannabisderived products.” CR: “Some cannabinoids feature biphasic response curves involving one efficacy at a relatively low dose and another— and sometimes polar opposite—effect at stronger doses. As a practicing clinician, how does the issue of response curves affect your job?" SP: “The dose response curve is an important element of using cannabinoids from cannabis or hemp. It is often misunderstood or ignored by those who lack a clinical comprehension of how it functions and how cannabinoids such as CBD should be titrated (dosed). For example, when treating pain with prescription medications, more medication is required as the pain level worsens. This is a simple model involving increases in dose that are proportional to pain or dysfunction level. “In this traditional model, greater pain obviously requires

24

more medication to obtain an adequate response. For many prescription medications, this approach is correct. However, when it comes to the ECS and how CBD, THC, and other cannabinoids interact with receptors in the body–the dose response curve is completely different. It instead resembles a bell curve. When dosage is increased, an improved response is experienced—but only to a certain point. Improvement reaches a peak and then diminishes as dose is increased. “As a clinician treating patients daily, one of my greatest challenges is educating them about proper dosing. They are habituated to taking large doses at the beginning of their treatment and, if they do not experience an adequate response, increasing their dose. When I get new patients that exhibit no response who are currently taking strong doses, I have them restart with relatively low doses. We increase dosing slowly over time, but only until the patient feels the intended benefits. This is, without question, the best approach. “Most companies that sell cannabis and hemp do not like this approach because they make more money selling greater volumes of their products. Many companies advertise that their customers should consume hundreds of milligrams or even multiple grams per day. This is incorrect and misleading! “Products from companies and influencers that do not address the need to ‘start low and go slow,’ instead recommending unnecessarily huge doses, are a good example of ignorant marketers who lack a true understanding of the healing mechanisms of the human body. They seem to not possess the basic knowledge of how the products they sell actually work.” CR: “You published Inflammation Nation in 2016. Among the most common efficacies demonstrated by the cannabinoids and terpenes produced by cannabis are anti-inflammatory benefits. How does inflammation play a role in disease and what mechanisms are involved when phytomolecules from plants such as hemp decrease inflammation?” SP: “Inflammation is the triggering mechanism of almost all diseases. The root term ‘itis’ means inflammation. The term placed before it indicates inflammation of that particular area or organ. Examples include arthritis, dermatitis,

thyroiditis, gastritis, colitis, vaginitis, prostatitis, and many others. In fact, there are more than 200 different ‘itis’ medical conditions! “Identification of inflammation trigger mechanisms is of utmost importance when pursuing optimum health. My book covers the epigenetic factors of diet, lifestyle, and environment. “In it, I describe how the ECS is involved with pain and repair mechanisms for tissue via the immune system...improvements that occur with using cannabis and hemp products. Cannabinoids and terpenes can lower inflammation naturally by activating particular receptors within a variety of organs and tissues to repair themselves from damage or injury (regardless of the cause) and, thus, lower inflammation via both direct and indirect mechanisms. “In addition to decreasing inflammation, cannabinoids and terpenes often provide the body with a healing response via the immune system. This can lead to overall improvement of a chronic inflammatory condition, not just temporary relief from dysfunction. In future discussions, I’ll explain some of the types of cannabinoids and terpenes that are more important for inflammatory conditions such as pain and arthritis.” CR: “We’ve talked briefly in past interviews about active and passive states for ECS receptors such as CB1 and CB2. Let’s discuss the different states of ECS receptors and the overall topic of binding affinity and how it affects potency and outcomes for patients.” SP: “The state of health of the organs and tissues populated by CB1 and CB2 receptors determines their active or passive state. The healthier the tissue, the more passive (resting) the receptors. In a healthy state, one’s body requires little active repair from the immune system. However, when a disease condition is present, organs and tissues that feature CB1 and CB2 receptors become more active, or ‘turn on.’ This is due to the role of the immune system in actively repairing damage from inflammatory triggers and defending the body from foreign invaders such as infections. “When one has a serious health condition, smaller doses of cannabinoids in more frequent administrations are needed to stimulate a positive response from the ECS that enables

healing. This is because the CB1 and CB2 receptors are very active and their binding affinity is significantly higher. In this active state, the ECS requires only small doses of CBD to initiate the signals for immune system repair. “This is a great approach for patients with chronic conditions. Often, we need to deliver only 10-25 mg per dose, three to four times per day, to achieve optimal results. This form of dosing provides significantly better results and also offers the benefit of being more cost effective for patients. “An opposite mechanism applies to those who lack disease. Healthy patients feature ECS receptors in a resting state, with a binding affinity that is considerably lower. Such healthy patients require greater amounts of cannabinoids to stimulate a response. This explains why people with chronic conditions typically display a more pronounced response when consuming cannabinoids than those who are healthier. In fact, healthy subjects sometimes report no perception of effect whatsoever due to the resting state of their ECS receptors.”

Nevada’s first cannabis-infused spices hit dispensary shelves Revolutionary New Product Allows Consumer to Make Anything an Edible Imagine for a moment that you can make your breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack a gourmet infused experience, with no special skills required and without having to break out the magic butter machine or guess at the amount of cannabis you are consuming. Two Nevada companies have teamed up to make this a reality: cannabis extracts and edibles brand OMG THC partnered with spices and sauces company Soul

D’licious Seasoning to create a game changing edible for Nevada patients and consumers in the form of cannabis-infused seasoning blends. “Virtually all of the edibles in the Nevada market are sweet; our spices are savory,” noted OMG THC COO Stephanie Magurno. “They allow patients and consumers to make anything an edible – steak, baked potatoes, roasted vegetables, sliced fruit, burgers, pasta – the possibilities are endless! This also addresses another challenge that edibles consumers face: eating one dose of a product that tastes really good and wanting more of it. In this case, you get to eat the entire burrito or bowl of soup you make – not just one bite. You can cook

26

with them or just add them in to something already made. Unlike most edibles on the market, they will not melt in the Vegas heat, so that is a bonus as well!” The Soul D’licious Infused spices blend launched at Nevada Wellness Center in late December with two varieties: 100mg THC Vegetable Seasoning and 100mg THC All Purpose Chipotle Fire Rub. According to Benjamin Bey, owner of Soul D’licious, four additional varieties will soon be available. These include Lemon Pepper Garlic (100mg THC), Blackened Rosemary (100mg THC), a 1:1 All Purpose blend (100mg THC and 100mg CBD), and a 500mg THC Medical All Purpose Blend. Because THC starts to convert to other cannabinoids at 365 degrees Fahrenheit, the product makers recommend adding the spices at the end of the cooking process or cooking it at 375 degrees or less (as the food itself will not reach that high a temperature). This means cooking on medium heat on a stove or 375 degrees for an oven or grill. “Boiling water never gets hotter than about 212 degrees Fahrenheit so if you are cooking a soup or water-base product, you are safe at any temperature you set the stove on,” added Magurno. “However, it is not recommended to throw the spices into hot oil in a pan on the stove – they should be added after the food is added or at the end of the frying process to get the seasoning evenly coating the food you are making.” Each packet comes with ten individually bagged servings. The seasonings are infused with distillate, which means the

product allows the spices to take center stage with no cannabis taste or aftertaste. “In other states where there are infused seasonings, they generally add kief to the mix and hope the flavor of the spices overpowers the cannabis taste,” noted Magurno. Health-conscious consumers, people who love to cook or love to eat, diabetics, and those looking for a discreet way to consume cannabis will love this new product line. The spices are completely homogenized, which means that they are also perfect for microdosing. Each serving is approximately ¾ of a tsp – if consumers use ¼ tsp then they get 3.3mg of THC instead of the full 10mg. “We are proud to have partnered with Soul D’licious Seasoning to bring this product to life,” Magurno emphasized, “not only because they have been making delicious spice blends for fifteen years in Las Vegas, but also because it is a wholly minorityowned and operated company. People of color have largely been left out of cannabis business license ownership in our state, so this partnership is innovative in that regard as well as the nature and quality of the product itself.” The collaboration between the two companies led to another first in Nevada: the first cannabis radio show in the state. Co-hosted by Bey and Magurno, the show discusses cannabis science, has fascinating guest interviews, and provides listeners “nugs of knowledge” about the plant and the many ways to consume it. With more than 30 episodes to date, the show airs at 7:30am on KUNV 91.5 FM. The duo posts a podcast version with the full guest interviews (which are condensed for radio play) on the Soul D’licious Infused YouTube channel. HIGHER LEARNING >>>>> Cannabis for Epilepsy Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain characterized by recurrent seizure activity for which there are multiple causes. These sources include brain tumors, stroke, head or brain injury, and infections to the central nervous system. Epilepsy is often measured by the severity and frequency of seizure activity. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 50 million people globally have this disease. The group defines the seizures produced by epilepsy as “brief episodes of involuntary movement that may involve a part of the body (partial) or the entire body (generalized) and are sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness.” Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone defines a seizure as “an excessive surge of electrical activity in the brain that can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on which parts of the brain are involved.” According to a 2019 research study, epilepsy can also cause “deficit sensorimotor [and] cognitive” impairments that “compromise quality of life” and carry an “increased risk of premature death.” The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly four million people in the United States suffer from epilepsy. More than half a million of these patients are children who often are afflicted by special childhood varieties of the disease, such as Dravet syndrome and Angelman syndrome. Other variants of the disorder include Landau-Kleffner syndrome, in which children lose their ability to speak and understand speech, and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, which manifests in multiple types of seizures that are difficult to control. In the United Kingdom, more than half a million citizens suffer this debilitating condition and nearly 90 new cases are diagnosed each day (about 33,000 per year), according to advocacy group Epilepsy Action. In the United States, about 150,000 new cases of the disease are officially diagnosed each year, according to the Epilepsy Foundation. The majority of diagnoses fall within two distinct and very different age groups: Young children and older adults. The group reports that one in 26 people will develop epilepsy “at some point in their lives.”

Cannabis for Epilepsy A number of cannabinoids have been found to provide benefit to sufferers of epilepsy—typically in the form of decreased seizure activity—and sometimes via a mechanism involving a reduction in the anxiety that often triggers them.

28

Cannabis and its derivative components, including cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and a variety of terpenes such as linalool, serve as a metaphorical candle in the night for those who suffer treatment-resistant types

of epilepsy for which no effective treatment is available. A 2019 study entitled “Use of Cannabidiol in the Treatment of Epilepsy: Efficacy and Security in Clinical Trials” that was published in the journal Molecules found that CBD “showed efficacy as an anti-seizure, antipsychotic, neuroprotective, antidepressant, and anxiolytic.” A 2017 study entitled “Cannabinoids in the Treatment of Epilepsy: Hard Evidence at Last?” that was published in the Journal of Epilepsy Research investigated the role of both CBD and THC for epilepsy patients. “Compared with THC, CBD shows a better defined anticonvulsant profile...and is largely devoid of adverse psychoactive effects and abuse liability,” noted the study’s authors. The researchers concluded that “Evidence concerning the potential anti-seizure efficacy of cannabinoids reached a turning point in the last 12 months with the completion of the first highquality placebo-controlled trials of a purified oil-based liquid CBD preparation in patients with Dravet syndrome and LennoxGastaut syndrome.” The study noted one of the problems with modern healthcare in states and provinces where medical cannabis is legal: Doctor ignorance and opposition. “96% of respondents among the general public felt that there was sufficient safety evidence about cannabis products, whereas only 34% of physicians considered this to be the case.”

Licensed Caregiver Testimonial Research data regarding the efficacy of cannabis for diseases like epilepsy is complemented by the testimonials of frontline workers such as doctors, nurses, and registered caregivers. Colleen Kibler is a licensed cannabis caregiver in Maine under the state’s medical marijuana program. She also serves as manager of a retail dispensary and is the formulator of a nationally distributed hemp-based skincare product. Kibler is also a seizure patient who has successfully employed cannabis in the treatment of her condition. The following interview was conducted in December 2020. Curt Robbins: “As a licensed caregiver and based on y0ur experience with patients, what are the major efficacies gained when those with epilepsy consume cannabis?” Colleen Kibler: “Thanks to our sweet angel Charlotte Figi, the whole world is talking about CBD as a safe and effective anticonvulsant compound. CBD has now inspired literally thousands of wellness products, many of which involve CBD isolate to reduce cost. “There are, however, so many beneficial compounds other than CBD within the cannabis plant! Caregivers are repeatedly

observing that full-spectrum cannabis medicine, featuring hundreds of active compounds, is best for those with seizure disorders. Full-spectrum products help manage medication side effects and symptoms that are typically not properly controlled by CBD isolate alone. “Daily consumption of full-spectrum tinctures or softgels can significantly reduce seizure activity. Epilepsy patients may also find relief from soreness, muscle tightness, brain fog, headaches, anxiety, sleeplessness, and challenges with mental focus by using cannabis. In my opinion, full-spectrum cannabis tinctures or softgels are among the most important items in the medicine cabinet of any seizure patient.” CR: “Is treatment of epilepsy about merely reducing seizure reduction? What other symptoms of this common condition can gain help from the terpenes and cannabinoids produced by hemp and cannabis?” CK: “Treatment of seizure disorders is largely about reducing seizure occurrence, length, and severity. One of the biggest factors contributing to seizure activity—for every patient with whom I’ve worked—is stress and anxiety. I recommend CBD for every seizure patient, regardless of the status of their disorder. Why? Because anxiety reduction is crucial to their wellness and preventing seizures. “THC can also be used to reduce stress, but it’s critical for patients to know their limits. Too much THC can, paradoxically, increase anxiety. Use of both CBD and THC, in the proper ratio, is key to avoiding a state involving discomfort, excessive anxiety, or a panic attack that can result in a seizure. Full-spectrum patients also find relief from other common symptoms of epilepsy, including headache and muscle fatigue.” CR: “Is there an optimal path of consumption for epilepsy patients? What are some of the pros and cons of various avenues?” CK: “Seizure patients need cannabis medicine every day. Many look to capsules or softgels because they are easy to add to a daily med routine. Concentrate or tincture products taken sublingually are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, skipping the liver. For those requiring quick effect, the delay in bioavailability of edibles and capsules is simply unacceptable. “Inhalants are as efficient as sublingual delivery. Some seizure patients use concentrates, especially in emergency scenarios. Many people have seen videos of children seizing and receiving a dose of concentrate in the mouth via syringe, soon after which their seizure activity slows or ceases. Patients fortunate enough to experience a warning aura often carry an emergency concentrate dose to prevent a seizure. Dabbing, or the vaporization of potent cannabis concentrates, is particularly useful for emergency preventive maintenance for epilepsy patients.” CR: “What particular terpenes, cannabinoids, and cultivars (stains) are of particular interest to epileptics based on improved therapeutic outcomes?” CK: “Strains [cultivars] featuring the terpene linalool tend to be fantastic for seizure patients for a couple of reasons. First,

linalool has been found to block glutamate receptors in the brain, which can greatly reduce the chances of seizure activity. Second, because stress and anxiety are major contributing factors to seizure activity, keeping these levels in check is one of the paths to wellness for epileptics. Inhaled linalool is known to reduce anxiety by directly interacting with GABAA receptors. “There are a few popular marijuana strains that contain rich levels of linalool. One is Lavender, which is a beautifully spicy and floral cultivar that is sweetly sedative. LA Confidential is a strong indica for which many find incredibly uplifting cerebral effects for a couple of hours, before the high melts into drowsiness. “Lastly, for epilepsy patients who can tolerate a sativa and desire a more cerebral high, I recommend Amnesia Haze. This strain is known to be beneficial for adult ADD/ADHD patients because it inspires productivity and focus. It’s excellent for activities that involve both the mind and the body, such as exercise and sex.” SOURCES: Silvestro S, Mammana S, Cavalli E, Bramanti P, Mazzon E. Get to Know Homie Cannabis a Friend, Neighbor, and Comrade “Born from a call to action to see people of color have a seat at the cannabis table”- CEO, RT A black man with a vision for his community, RT, is the sole founder and CEO of Homie Cannabis- a company that turned a corporate no, into an independent yes. RT, says: “Homie Cannabis is more than a brand, it's a platform to capture the consciousness of the cannabis culture. I wanted a brand that would target a particular niche, and bring a new level of cultural engagement, strategy, and image to cannabis.” When I was asked to profile Homie Cannabis, I knew that I’d be profiling a black owned company. And the name...I love it! Many would assume that I am playing into the stereotypical b.s, but consider this: how many black owned companies are there in the cannabis industry? Wouldn’t it be great to know that a company is black owned based on its name? Especially if you are looking to buy black? The term “homie” doesn’t belong to black people, but it was birthed by black culture. When I asked RT about the birth of the company name, he explained: “The ‘Homie’ name was carefully selected to identify a term that crosses ethnic, geographical, and economic lines. When someone refers to another as their homie, it is a term of endearment. Homie Cannabis reflects that warm embrace extended when we greet one another, and when we refer to someone we really like! My goal is to change the vernacular of what describes cannabis, pot, marijuana, weed, or reefer, to homie. When you say: ‘I got some homie’, ‘bought some homie’, or ‘enjoyed some homie’, it's understood among users and non-consumers what you mean.”

Homie Cannabis: Mission, Purpose, and Goals On a mission for communities of color, who are not seen enough in this industry (and many), Homie Cannabis offers products of the people- by the people- for the people. Their mission is to capture the consciousness of the cannabis culture from cultivation, production, distribution, retail and consumers. Their mandate is to enhance the community and enrich the culture by serving notice that people of color belong in the cannabis industry. RT says: “we seek to move our end users beyond the consumer only model, and have meaningful representation at retail. Our culture wants to see a minority entrepreneur succeed, ones that aren’t rappers as well. Opportunity for entry into the cannabis sector and advancement, must include those who didn't leverage their fame to get licenses for shelf space!"

Homie Cannabis' Journey into the Cannabis Industry It’s no secret that life in America isn’t lived on equal playing fields. When I asked RT, about the journey into cannabis, he explained: “The journey has been a real challenge, full of obstacles and hurdles for a black entrepreneur. I've utilized my own money in the midst of a pandemic, to provide a quality product and a voice for those who make up a significant part of the consumer base. The true glass ceiling is securing and maintaining a place at retail. The hardest part of this journey was the initial decision to quit my job and embark on the road to entrepreneurship. Making the decision to use my own funds, and putting together a team along the supply chain to execute the body of work was challenging. But dedication, hard work, discipline and a strong belief in myself and vision has paved the way. There must be a willingness for dispensaries to purchase and support minority brands. There is a built-in audience waiting to embrace it in this economic and social climate. I'm optimistic that the industry is moving towards a more inclusive business model”. It takes a village, right? RT shouts out his tribe of people that helped him arrive here: “I don't believe in solo superstars. My mentors and partners offer considerable guidance, input, criticism and direction. Frank Hawkins, owner of Nevada Wellness is a key advisor and mentor. Herb Washington, a prominent business and cannabis entrepreneur is also a key advisor and mentor. Dr. David Snipper, MD., is another invaluable cultivation and CBD partner with superb skills in developing high grade strains, and superior herbal products via Euphoria Wellness.”

Homie Cannabis and Business Collaborations Blk. Water is a beautiful water brand, with water full of fulvic minerals (naturally derived elements that come from decomposed organic matter, providing benefits to the body including boosting the immune system, decreasing

inflammation, improving brain function, reducing fatigue, and aiding iron absorption). I absolutely love it! The fulvic minerals are added to clear water, turning the water black without the need to add any color or dye. Blk. Water contains electrolytes and traces of over 77 minerals found deep in the natural earth. Blk Water is a brand partnership with Homie Cannabis. RT, says: “The water is a fantastic daily resource for those who work out and especially for those who consume the plant. The minerals, electrolytes, and fulvic minerals help eliminate toxins while rehydrating the body. Blk. Water Owner and CEO David Bergstein, and I see the value in expanding the consumer target for the brand. I am also handling wholesale business accounts in the Las Vegas market. Bergstein supports Homie Cannabis, and he embraces my culture. I am happy to support Blk. Water and introduce it to a new audience”.

Homie Cannabis Products and Future Plans Homie Cannabis will launch in Las Vegas first, with plans to expand to other markets. RT, has traveled extensively to LA, Chicago, and Detroit to spread the word about Homie Cannabis to tap into the tourists who purchase cannabis while in Las Vegas. Homie Cannabis is a true boutique brand that will offer specially selected strains of Indica, Hybrid, Sativa flower and pre-rolls to start. As they scale, the plan is to offer Homie Health & Wellness CBD products in a variety of sku's. RT says: “In 5 years, I want homie cannabis to be a dominant symbol of excellence in product and service for People of Color. A brand that reflects our commitment to be significant players in a multi-billion-dollar industry. We understood our niche and respected their voice and dollars at the register!”

FLEUR Grape Monster

This funky, Grape Monster tickles my fancy. I sure love a good, energetic sativa flower. And this pride of Fleur is exactly what I want when I'm ready to take off. The look of this remarkable flower is as impressive as the way it makes me feel. So open and free, Grape Monster, take me away. Are we in a Calgon commercial from the 90’s? There's hardly any myrcene in this animal, so you'll have to pull your own brakes. Sativas aren't for everyone, it might give you the shakes. But for me, it makes me happy with no aches whatsoever, and makes me feel oh so clever.

FLEUR ZEST

There's something about Fleur flower that makes me want to twist up a stout jay and kick back on the porch with a lemonade and my thoughts. So that’s just what I did with these Fleur Zest buds. Citrus terpenes fill my head and the air as I calmly forget everything around me and focus all my attention to my slow burning jay and the translucent clouds, like ghosts, float around me and disappear into nothingness. Everything is better after a zesty jay from Fleur. At least on my porch. Maybe yours too.

THE HARVEST FOUNDATION Dosi Fire CITY TREES Apples & Bananas Batter

BILL

There once was an old man named Bill who lived in the Oasis of Cannabis and he loved taking dabs. His whole life, Bill stressed on not having enough quality concentrates so he would spend countless hours collecting concentrates, or terps as he liked to call them. Old Man Bill would always deplete his supply using a creme brûlée torch until they became hot enough to transform into thick white vapor clouds. One afternoon, while Bill was frolicking about, he discovered Apples and Bananas up on the top shelf of the highest City Trees. Bill quickly pumped his brakes and ceased his search for terps - there were enough Apples and Bananas here to last a lifetime. As he settled in, and made his home inside the City Trees, he lived happily ever after.

DESERT BLOOM Key Lime Sativa Enhanced Gummies

SHWA

Now, as many of you know, I talk smack when it comes to most things gummy. For me, gummies symbolize many things wrong with the cannabis industry. Plus, most of them just plain suck. But much like hedge fund-run corporate cannabis companies, they aren’t going anywhere. So when a gummy comes my way, that tastes just as good as its texture, I have to point it out, and give a shout-out. Shout-out to Chef Amy at Desert Bloom for creating these Key Lime Gummies. A truly classic gummy that is worth its weight in weed. The sweet and tart key lime flavor lingered and brightened up my mouth. Thanks Chef Amy, Desert Bloom is lucky to have you- I look forward to trying another flavor soon!

KABUNKY Sugar Cookie Terp Sauce

SHWA

Kabunky OG Kush Krumble had me thinking Wild Bill slipped me a pack of sugar in the raw as a joke. This crumble has the look and feel of solid, raw sugar crystals. A golden caramel color, this OG Kush Krumble is straight-up stoney. Instead of dabbing it, I sprinkle a little of this magic on a bowl of Kabunky flower and slowly sizzle each corner before turning the dusted flower to ash. If Wild Bill did try and punk me with a pack of sugar in the raw, jokes on himthat pack got me straight-up stoned!

THC- 70.9% Caryophyllene- 12.1mg/g Limonene- 8.5mg/g Linalool- 7.7mg/g Humulene- 5.0mg/g Pinene(a+b)- 2.6mg/g

There are two things I think about when purchasing cannabis products: One is potency, and the second is a quote by Tommy Chong- All marijuana is medical. So my first thought when I spotted Sip Elixirs Hurricane Party 4ML shot with 100mg THC is that someone made a product I can sit back and enjoy for a few hours without having to re-up my high. Every hardcore cannabis enthusiast visiting Sin City should have Las Vegas Wellness & Compassion Co’s Sip Elixirs on their party-favor list. Just pour the 4ML shot into your walking-around-beverage and lean into exploring all that Las Vegas has to offer. With that said, if you have an allergy to Red 40, you may want to avoid heavy use. Sip Elixirs has the potential to be the perfect product. If the ingredients could be a little more... focused on wellness and compassion, Sip Elixirs could change the game. Nonetheless, if you’re just looking to party, I highly recommend Sip’s Hurricane Party to everyone.

What a beautiful entourage of terpenes this is for me. These saucy dabs are giving me energy and controlling my anxiety. I usually tell indica lovers to take precaution with such a heavy dose of limonene, but I would actually recommend this to any fellow dab-taker because of its abundance of anti-anxiolytic caryophyllene. I feel energetic and vocal with little or no regard to self-censorship. Gaseous bravery at its finest. I better go do something productive with this sassy tool before I say or do something destructive like a fool. This is like truth serum.

ended up here. Vegas is a mixed cultural place and has a lot of different things to do on top of being a legal cannabis state. It was a perfect transition for me, especially since I was already in the music industry. Moving around when I was younger really helped me at being able to adapt to pretty much any setting. JW: What type of musician are you? YK: I am a Rap/ Hip-Hop artist. JW: What are your favorite cannabis strains? YK: Bond Road Kush, Gary Payton, and Kush Mountains.

YOUNG KEEFA: Young Keefa, I’m 25 and my birthday is on January 13th so, almost 26. I thank you for doing this during my birthday month! I just started my own record label as well - CEO of Potency Music Entertainment, LLC. JW: When did you begin your music career? YK: I started taking my music seriously at the age of 19. A friend and I used to make music at a home studio, but we didn’t have the quality we wanted so we invested our money in going to a real recording studio. I started making music in Atlanta, GA. JW: How did you come up with the name Young Keefa? YK: My first name is Keith. One of the most potent parts of cannabis is the kief. I mixed them together. The Young part comes from my babyface. I have always been mistaken for being younger then what I really am. JW: Are you from Nevada? If not, where are you from and what brought you here?

40

YK: I’m was born in Bedford, OH. Growing up, I moved around to a few places and

JW: Any favorite cannabis products? YK: Mostly flower and anybody that knows me, knows it’s always in a big Backwoods. And, wax from time to time. JW: Does cannabis help you creatively? YK: Yes, it helps calm me down from overthinking. When making a song, I have so many words and ways I want to say them but when I write and smoke I definitely bring them together to make a record. When recording the song, you want to match that same head space and feeling you had when writing the song, so I smoke when I record as well.

JW: Favorite place to shop for cannabis? YK: Essence, The Source, or Cultivate. JW: Of the songs you have written/played, what has been your favorite? Why? YK: "Make It" was definitely one of my more difficult songs. It was written from my life experiences which is how I write most of my music. During Covid, we couldn’t do anything so I had to change it up. Getting closer with my family and friends and just talking more really helped out as well. JW: Where do you find inspiration for music? YK: Living life is the best way to find inspiration. JW: Favorite things to do in Vegas... YK: Spending time with my girlfriend and family. Also, I like to hit Davidoff of Geneva Cigar Bar on The Strip and chill and write sometimes too. JW: Anything you dislike about our state? YK: We don’t have a cannabis hotel. JW: How can readers listen to your music? YK: Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, YouTube, etc. Just type in “Young Keefa”

JW: Do you support full cannabis legalization?

JW: How can readers follow you on the internet/social media?

YK: Yes, cannabis is going to stop the opioid crisis. Cannabis is also going to help with debt as well because everyone smokes. Stabilization of jobs and cannabis helps medically. 1/1/21 will be 5 years no pills or lean for me, something that I’m promoting in my music as well. Kids and young adults listen to our music and want to be just like us. We have to try to set an example.

Dear Mary Jane, Seeing as we have just begun a new year, isn't it about time for your annual obligatory rant about new year's resolutions and such? I do so look forward to your lunacy, although I think that I would be frightened to meet you in person. Happy new year! Koward Lee Kevin

Dear Kowardly (yes, I see what you did there. Clever.),

back to my job of testing stripper poles.

So, did your mommy give you permission to use the Internet, or what? For some reason, I have a mental image of you being one of those guys who owns a suit made out of human skin. But I'm sure that you look lovely when wearing it.

People will actually get to know their neighbors. I grew up on the East Coast. Go figure. The first thing that I noticed when I moved here 25 years ago was that nobody really knew their neighbors; you can literally live here in the same location for years and only have a nodding acquaintance with your neighbors. I expect that to change, and I will tell you why. Do you know why soldiers in combat tend to be so closely knit? It is because they have experienced and survived the same experiences as one another. That is always the basis for an excellent friendship.

Homicidal impulses notwithstanding (yours or mine?), I suppose that I do have a history of New Year's resolution lists. While this may be no exception, as I am far too hungover from holiday revelry to come up with a new topic for January, I can safely say that this list will be most unlike lists that I have published in previous years. Can you guess why? ‘Tis an ill wind that blows no good. Every cloud has a silver lining. I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy. Regardless of saying, they have stood the test of time because they are mostly true. So! This year's new year's column is going to provide a list of my predictions for the coming year. Note: for every one that I get right, I expect SOMEBODY to send me $10, just because I am so damned cool. There will be a coronavirus vaccine, and it might actually work. However, there will also be a segment of our population who fears that said vaccination is actually a tracking chip or a brain control drug or something equally unusual. As such, tinfoil hats might become the second most popular fashion accessory, after face masks. Nevada will come back stronger than ever before. Think about it: after a period of enforced isolation and quarantine, where is the party going to be when it is finally over? I am thinking Vegas, baby! It is going to be a long, hot summer, especially after I am cleared to go

44

Marijuana will make it to the next level. Well, the election back in November demonstrated that a great deal of the population is in favor of federal marijuana legalization. I believe that this is the year that this will actually happen. I'm not thinking in terms of dispensaries in every state. Rather, I am thinking that the federal government is finally going to release marijuana to science and medical labs in order to synthesize new and improved medications. I mean, it would be nice to legally purchase weed anywhere in the country, but I think the real money is in the pharmaceutical field. So, Kevin my friend, I hope that this list of predictions satisfies you. For the record, you shouldn't be afraid of meeting me in person. You should be terrified, you pathetic little worm! I also provide dominatrix services... hit me up, candy-ass. Happy Holidays! Mary Jane

THE PETER JAY SHOW

Photo @kellysikkema

Once Upon a Time in 2020 As I have mentioned in the past, I am a huge Quentin Tarantino fan. I do not think there is a single movie of his that I have not loved, but a few notables stand out. I especially like the way that he shows no compunctions about rewriting history. In The Inglourious Basterds, he killed Hitler. In Django Unchained, he rewrote the American slave narrative. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he put the Manson family properly in its place. With a flamethrower, no less. Here is a quick newsflash for you: I am no Quentin Tarantino. I do, however, admire his sense of audacity. Who goes back and kills Hitler? Quentin Tarantino does, that's who! So, with that thought in mind, and Pulp Fiction playing in the background, I am going to give 2020 the rewrite that it deserves. January: World War 3 almost started, when The Donald used a drone strike to kill a rabid Iranian general. At first, the world got tense but soon realized that the world was actually a much better place without Iranian army general Soleimani. Hasta La Vista, baby! February: Valentine's day was an enormous failure last year, with many people expecting a marriage proposal only to be disappointed. Incidentally, I would write the same description for any Valentine’s day, regardless of year. March: Much of the world was introduced to the latest Gourmet export from China. Sales of bat and pangolin meat in butcher shops worldwide goes through the roof. April: Big cat trainer Joe Exotic gains national prominence by being such an extreme animal hoarder. He was caught and sentenced to prison for animal cruelty, but a 2000 pound rhinoceros attacked him in the jail parking lot and ate him. The rhino was last seen licking its own butt, trying to get the taste out of his mouth.

46

May: For a brief, hopeful time this Spring, North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un was feared (?) to be dead. His Facebook account

went un-updated, he contributed zero Tik Tok videos, and he even stopped attending the weekly execution of the innocent. As it turns out, he had a part time job at a North Korean grocery store that had no food to sell, making this a time for quiet reflection for him. June through August: For all intents and purposes, summer 2020 was cancelled due to a lack of interest. Marijuana sales, however, skyrocketed. I am sure that it is just a coincidence. No connection at all. September: Miley Cyrus saw an alien. Apparently, the alien was actually looking for Hannah Montana, and proclaimed disappointment when he saw Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” video. He also wondered why her pants seemed to always cut her in half, but nobody could really provide a reasonable explanation there. October: What is less than nothing? I seldom get any trick or treaters for Halloween, but got absolutely no company at all on the 31st. Do you have any idea how much trouble I went to create a “Kathy Griffin holding Donald Trump's decapitated head” costume? I am still pissed off at somebody. November: Thanksgiving is one of the biggest holidays of the year for family assault and murder. This is not that big a surprise, if you think about it; if you put a bunch of people together in a room filled with turkey and alcohol, somebody is going to get jacked. This year, however, holiday violence was at an all-time low, due to the illegality of people congregating and the difficulty inciting a house-clearing brawl via Zoom. December: In an unexpected turn, peace on earth and goodwill towards man broke out worldwide and even Santa Claus complemented humanity on its ability to finally get along. I told you that this was like a Tarantino fantasy! Happy New Year!

Exploring

with Sarah Jane

By: Sarah Jane Woodall aka Wonderhussy A Veg as-based adventuress exploring weird shit in the desert...and beyond

I’ve never been a fan of winter. Every year, my fingers and toes go numb from mid-November until mid-March -- and this annual torment was one of the main reasons I moved to Vegas in the first place! Back in California, I’d spend winters hovered directly over the furnace in my mom’s house, dreaming of crawling across the broiling wasteland of the Mojave Desert -- so imagine my dismay when I finally moved out here, only to find that desert gets cold in winter, too. REALLY cold! Hunkering down in a pile of blankets for 5 months a year isn’t an option for an adventuress like me – I like to get around! So over the years I’ve tried all manner of defrosting tactics – everything from wool socks and furry boots to antifreeze enemas and baked potatoes up my ass (fingerlings work best). But nothing really worked to thaw my frozen bones…until finally, one January day about 10 years ago, I found the answer. A friend invited me to go hiking down by the Hoover Dam one bitingly cold winter morning, and I figured why not? At least the movement would stave off frostbite! He told me we were hiking to some kind of hot spring, but I had no idea what to expect – all I knew was, it was chilly and overcast all the way down the trail, with imminent snow threatening. What was I thinking?! I asked myself that question more than once as we descended into the shadowy depths of White Rock Canyon, then followed the Colorado River upstream a ways before turning up a narrow side canyon, the sandy floor of which started out damp, and only got wetter the farther up canyon we trekked…until eventually we were sloshing along through an inch of water, soaking our shoes.

we slogged along and the water got deeper, it occurred to me that my friend had mentioned we were hiking to a hot spring. I guess I’d never thought about it much before, but come to find out…they don’t call ‘em hot springs for nothing! After two hours of hiking we arrived at the end of the canyon – and now found ourselves looking up at an extremely rickety two-story metal ladder that looked to be somewhat flimsily bolted to the rock face above. Apparently, I was meant to trust the engineering of whatever half-baked hippie had rigged this thing in the first place, and climb to the top…where this alleged “hot” spring lay in wait. “Don’t worry,” my friend urged, jumping up a few rungs and scampering to the top, like it was nothing. “Just make sure you get a good grip, and go slow!” Having come this far (and gotten this soggy), there was really no turning back…so I grabbed the sides of the ladder and hoisted myself up, one shaky step at a time. The ladder wobbled, and the situation was made even more precarious by the fact that water was cascading down the cliff face behind it, splashing off the rock and making the rungs of the ladder slick and treacherous. YIKES! But the water was warm! Hot, even…and that’s what kept me going. When I finally hauled myself onto the ledge at the top of the cliff, I was greeted by a vision from paradise: a narrow slot canyon with towering stone walls rising several stories, only a sliver of gloomy gray sky visible above. The bottom of this canyon held a series of clear pools dammed by sandbags -- with clouds of steam wafting from the surface! Where has this place been all my life?!

Great, I thought to myself. Now my toes are really going to freeze! But the funny thing was...they didn’t! This water was mysteriously warm, like someone had left a bathtub running somewhere up the canyon, and as

The custom at these places being to bathe nude, I whipped off my hiking clothes and eased my chilled bones into the soothing hot water of the first pool. HEAVEN! The bottom of the pool was sandy and clean, and a steady current of fresh hot water flowed through from further up the canyon, flushing away all the bits and pieces (ahem) of those who’d come before me. For the first time in weeks, I felt life coming back into my toes, and all the miseries and

50

discomforts of winter melting from my frozen bones. I wallowed around in the warm waters like the proverbial pig in shit, color gradually returning to my cheeks and life slowly returning to my eyes. I was finally warm! I soon realized that the farther one waded/wallowed/sloshed up the canyon, the hotter the water got – there are usually a series of 3-4 pools dammed up at this particular hot spring, each one hotter than the next until you reach the so-called “crab cooker” or “lobster pot” at the very top, where the source of the springs comes gushing from a crevice in the canyon wall, forced up from some volcanically-heated aquifer deep in the earth. And it was there that I found my nirvana. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! Let me tell you, there is nothing like immersing oneself in lava-heated water, leaning back against a canyon wall and looking up to see rain misting down above you as you dig your toes into the sandy bottom and enjoy the sound of water rushing all around you. You’d pay hundreds of dollars for a similar experience at one of the fancy casino spas – but this was FREE! All you need is the gas money to get to the trail head, the gumption to hike a couple of miles…and the guts to climb that sketchy ladder. My friend and I only had enough daylight to soak for an hour or two before it was time to get dressed and hike out…but I swore I’d be back. And on the hike out, I learned that there were more hot springs down by the Hoover Dam – some of which are only accessible by boat, including an amazing “sauna cave,” which is basically a tunnel bored into the side of Black Canyon during construction of the Hoover Dam. When the workers blasted the tunnel, they accidentally tapped into a hot spring – and now a hot creek flows through the bottom of this long, curved tunnel, filling the inside with steam and making for a totally otherworldly experience…especially when you hike in far enough that the daylight disappears, and you find yourself in hot, steamy darkness. Like being back in the womb! The wonders of the sauna cave and other Nevada hot springs were still unknown to me as I hiked out of White Rock Canyon that January day over 10 years ago- but after that first magical hot spring experience, I was hooked. I’ve spent the last decade chasing natural hot springs all throughout the amazing state of Nevada (and beyond). Nevada has more hot springs than any other U.S. state, and I have made it my life’s mission to enjoy as many of them as possible. From that first hot soak down on the Colorado River, up through the cow pastures of central Nevada and into the mountains and playas of the Black Rock Desert up north, at last count I have been to 29 different natural hot springs in this beautiful state – and there are still many more I haven’t yet experienced. And I’ll keep looking for them, because I’d rather drive 50 bumpy miles through cowpie-spotted rangeland to soak in a rusty old stock tank than pay to soak in some chi-chi spa, any day. Not only are the natural hot springs FREE, they are also unpretentious – and best of all, when you’re 100 miles from anyone but the cows, you can toke up to your heart’s content. Try doing that at a hotel spa!

Cannabis May Be the Key

to Reparations for Black People in America

>>>

By Alcinia Whiters, CEIC Board

This country became the superpower it is because of its origins as a plantation economy. Plantation economies are based on mass agricultural production and rely on the export of a cash crop as a source of income – think cotton, sugar cane and tobacco plantations. These plantations reaped huge profit margins on the backs of enslaved people who provided free labor. Even after slavery was abolished Southern planters continued to exploit Black labor which, combined with Black codes and Jim Crow laws compounded poverty in the Black community. According to historians Sven Beckert and Seth Rockman, “American slavery is necessarily imprinted on the DNA of American capitalism.”

We can have cannabis countries pay into a fund that supports programs for mental health, rehabilitation, job skills, education and even legal defense for people in communities of color. We could establish a venture capital fund specifically for investing in Black and Brown cannabis business owners. Imagine if at the end of prohibition there was a fund established or a percentage of tax revenue earmarked, to support programs providing opportunities and equitable market share of the alcohol industry. In 2019, tax revenue from alcoholic beverages amounted to more than $10 billion. If just 1% of that tax revenue was reinvested into communities of color that would provide $100 million towards creating freedom, equity and opportunity.

Now also think cannabis.

Last year, Nevada collected nearly $10 million in taxes from cannabis sales and if we had 1% of that reinvested into our communities of color we could establish a fund that had the potential to make right the racial injustices related to drug convictions and provide economic opportunities Black and Brown people in cannabis.

Cannabis is the latest cash crop to exploit Black people and it didn’t just begin with the legalization of marijuana by individual states. The war on drugs including low level offenses for marijuana possession fueled the prisonindustrial complex. Local jurisdictions across the country and the for-profit prisons they subsidized, used the criminality of marijuana to pillage Black and Brown communities to increase revenue. CEIC’s goal is to see cannabis fashion a new economy and do away with what NYT reporter Matthew Desmond calls, “America’s lowroad approach to capitalism.” The cannabis industry is in the unique position to steer the American economy into one that is more equitable and inclusive. Through freedom, equity and opportunity (CEIC’s core values) we can steer America on the high-road approach to capitalism. It is also the pathway to repair the harm done to Black and Brown communities through the war on drugs. Perhaps our approach to paying reparations to Black people has been all wrong. Instead of asking the government for a hand out or a one-time stipend, we could build reparations into the fabric of emerging industries.

52

Nothing I described is outlandish. All it would take is for the industry, including business owners, government oversight boards and the will of the people to be intentional about inclusion in the cannabis industry and the will to lead the country (and other industries) by example. CEIC is seizing this moment that we find ourselves in; this moment of uncertainty and unease. But instead of allowing it to cripple us, it’s powering us to action. It’s powering us to fight the inequities that have become commonplace in the lives of our community members. It’s powering us to rail against those who seek to perpetuate a status quo that hasn’t worked in a long time. We will not equivocate in our work to greater equity and justice to Black people, especially those seeking to be in the cannabis industry. We don’t expect the undoing of failed racist policies to be fixed overnight, our work is just beginning and we welcome you to join us. Visit us at CEIVnv.org.

A Day in the Life of ...

Kristen Everhart Curaleaf's Regional Marketing Director's Life and Work Revolves Around the Plant. For the past two years, Las Vegas resident Kristen Everhart has been Curaleaf’s Regional Marketing Director, overseeing all marketing initiatives for the western region of the country, including Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and California.. Everhart grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, Advertising, and Public Relations at Grand Valley State University in Allendale. She spent 12 years after college working for a small radio station cluster before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada. “After a few more years of working in media marketing in Vegas, I left and joined the Hard Rock Hotel’s marketing and promotions team,” she said. “I had worked with brand invention through an agency and one of the clients I worked with was a cannabis company in Canada - I knew pretty quickly that was the market I wanted to be in.” After answering an ad for marketing manager, Everhart said CuraLeaf brought her on board, working her way up to Marketing Director of the West Region. Curaleaf is a vertically integrated cannabis operator that’s been around for a decade, serving 350,000 patients in 93 local dispensaries, with 22 cultivation sites, 30 processing sites, and 1,150,000 active wholesale dispensary accounts, across 23 states; with a wide range of premium, medical grade products. The company prides itself on being a “family of advocates and educators from diverse backgrounds,

54

with a shared love for the power of cannabis.” Curaleaf also believes in giving back to the communities it serves, forming partnerships with local entities for positive impact. One such outreach came in the way of baskets delivered to hospitals during COVID, filled with masks, hand sanitizers, and sealed food items for health care workers. It’s website refers to the plant as an ancient entity that brings people together, and Everhart’s first time trying cannabis reflects that philosophy.

Daily Dose, for work and play Her journey into cannabis began ahead of the cannabis company gig, long before she even became a certified cannabis patient. “My first experience with cannabis was in my early 20s,” she shared. “I was living in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the time. My first time probably mirrors many other’s. My friends and I were at the Pine Knob Music Theater, now known as DTE Energy Music Theater near Detroit. It was during a Dave Matthews concert, and we danced, we laughed, and we hugged everyone around us. Cannabis has been in my life ever since.” But her cannabis use isn’t all festival fun, as Everhart suffers from chronic back pain, caused by herniated disks, made worse by arthritis. “I spent a short time on opioid painkillers and muscle relaxers - which made my day-to-day life even more challenging than it already was, while in pain,” she shared. “I was working fulltime in an office, collaborating with colleagues, and my head was fuzzy on the opioids.” Back surgery, in the way of a discectomy, helped, but slowly, she said, she discovered that regular cannabis use, coupled with holistic treatments for pain like yoga, meditation and Chiropractic care could successfully keep her off the pain meds. According to Medlineplus.gov, a herniated disk is a ruptured

disk, where the spinal fluid leaks, irritating nerves, causing sciatica or chronic back pain. Add arthritis from the irritation, a painful inflammation and stiffness of the joints, and you are dealing with serious pain. Her daily dosing begins in the morning with 100 milligrams of CuraLeaf’s Peppermint CBD tincture. She also doses before working out or cleaning the house on the weekends, as insurance, warding off pain. “My new favorite go-to is CuraLeaf’s line of Select Ratio Drops,” she said. “If I’m going to lay in the sun or make dinner with friends, I’ll take the 4:1 ratio of CBD to THC. If I need some really chill downtime, I’ll go straight for the 1:1 or 0.1 THC droops and doze off halfway through a movie. Then I'll finish the movie later in the day with a Sushi delivery!” Occasionally, she said she’ll add a few puffs from her favorite Select Elite Live vape cartridge, filled with Mountain Glue, if she’s watching a particularly interesting documentary. “About an hour before I go to bed I medicate,” she said. “Lately, I’ve been using Select Nano Gummies. Curaleaf launched them across the State of Nevada in June of this year. They’re fast acting, nano emulsion-based cannabis edible. I take before bed so I can enjoy the euphoric effects before I fall asleep.” Everhart said she’s liking the nano extracted concentrates, as they are consistently in effect. If she takes a five milligram dose before bed she has a good night’s sleep. That said, if she takes 10 milligrams, she may become anxious, or even paranoid. This is due to going over a personal tolerance for the THC. “If I do too much THC at night, I go to that scary place of monsters under the bed,” she laughed. The trick, she said, is using the plant as prevention, not a bandaid for immediate pain, as western medicine dictates. And, though there are times when she still may need to pop an Ibuprofen, those moments are fewer and farther between as she keeps the plant in her system while daily dosing. “Since using cannabis products in my daily life, I really haven’t experienced that horrific sciatica in as much time,” she said. “I remember dragging myself across the floor in pain - and that just doesn’t happen any longer.” Everhart said there’s a distinct parallel between her career path and how she’s healed herself with cannabis. I’m forever grateful for the healing this plant has brought to my life,” she concluded. “But I’m equally grateful to have a job in an industry that helps so many, not just me.”

FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH Occupandi Temporis {Seize the Moment}

"I implore you to be prepared, take a moment to listen, to share, to be there. Show there is hope, an answer to a pressing question, a new day before us." There are times in our lives when we are faced with a choice of whether to help someone or not. Often that help comes in the form of a financial handout or the use of your cell phone but there are other times when the help that is requested is not so obvious. Often the request is subliminal, not voiced out right where you know what is needed. Times when the help comes from just being there, just listening, just having the compassion to stop long enough to allow the other to know that they are important and not ignored. When you come in contact with someone it is certain that moment affords you the opportunity to edify them or even be edified by them. This is a particularly important moment in both of your lives. I’m not a Bible thumper and have some broad understandings of the ‘question of our existence’ but it doesn’t stop the realization that there are plenty of truths within the writings of all the religious documents. So, let me quote an interesting truth from the King James Version, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” My understanding is there are no coincidences in personal contacts but countless opportunities. There may be something that you have to show, tell, or teach them. There may be something they have to show, tell, or teach you. Either way the encounter shows the time has come to see, hear, learn, and change lives. The change may be epiphanous or small but certainly always a timely one. Should you choose NOT to entertain this encounter both of you are missing this divine moment of growth and edification. My understanding of this truth has proven to change lives, others and my own. We can and do make a difference in the world with nothing more than a sincere compliment, a greeting or word of encouragement and understanding. I’m not saying that you should open your wallet to everyone that comes within

your circle of influence, but I am saying they came within your influential energy for cause and in perfect timing. You have an abundance, open your Spirit and ears for you may hear or lend a word that will have a major impact on lives for years to come. How can we take the chance of missing this? What if your smile, an encouraging word, or even just a passing complement could save, change the course of, or broaden a life and you chose not to take part of that moment? The extended impact of this choice may not be one you would knowingly accept, but nevertheless will happen. I met a young man on the Mississippi River Ferry boat many years ago as we both rode the same time every day. We began having exchanges of interests, thoughts, beliefs, and even some personal information not normally shared between strangers. I tell you this because one day this man called me and asked if I would “please come talk to him” at a time that was not our normal ferry ride time of talks. I told him that I was not going to be able to do so, I actually made up an excuse to not go, which I later regretted and never repeated. I did not go to talk with this young man as I never associated with him other than riding the ferry to and from work and just didn’t want to be bothered. I did not take into account that he obviously believed in me, trusted me, and counted on my time and advice. I later learned that he committed suicide that very day. My obvious thoughts ran the gauntlet of all the ways I was responsible for this suicide. I harbored the feeling that had I just met with him perhaps he would not have killed himself or would have at least gone on to live longer. Maybe have a better relationship with himself and canceled thoughts of taking his life as a viable option. Eventually, I accepted it was not my fault, he was troubled more deeply than what I knew. However, I dropped that ball! I spent a lot of unnecessary energy thinking of all the possible consequences of going or not going but mostly, I missed the opportunity; one I will not be able to recover. Although prior to this, I would often offer a compliment, helping hand, or a few dollars, after this revelation I am

constantly open and available to entertain whatever ‘blessing’ is placed before me and encourage others to do the same. My Spirit is broad, and my mind fairly open. I lean on the belief that every encounter is placed before us for a reason. That we live merely moment by moment and every moment is important and necessary to continue to grow towards enlightenment. Wisdom is experiencing that moment, learning from that experience, and applying what you learned. This is a fact!

I give you this from my understanding: We are Spiritual Beings having a Physical Experience. We are here to obtain, create, and share the wisdom of our experiences, moment by moment. Therefore, live in the moment for the moment is good! When you are living in the moment and because the moment is good, you are also good! When asked, “How are you?”, an informed response is, “The moment is good!”

There are those whom I have spent time, energy, money, and compassion with who have moved on from troubled existences to fulfilled positive and enlightened lifestyles. People who have told me and others that I ‘saved their lives,’ which I feel is a bit broad, but who am I to say I didn’t? I no longer am faced with the question of what if I had not …, what if I made an excuse and missed the chance to make a difference? What if I missed what they had to offer me? Remember the ‘entertain angels’ line? Was I their angel? Were they my angels? The answer to those questions is evasive at best, but the fact remains that my life as well as countless others is better because I refused to ignore the opportunity to share in the edification of us all. My life is better given the knowledge that I am there, lend an ear, and care enough to treat others as important and worthwhile individuals. So, I implore you to be prepared, take a moment to listen, to share, to be there. Show that there is hope for a better way, an answer to a pressing question, a new day before us all. Another verse from the KJV Bible states to always be prepared to give the reason for the hope that you have. What is your reason? Mine is love, compassion, and mainly the knowledge that we all can make a difference actually does make a difference. Let’s be vigilant to not allow the lies and drunken hypnotism of the world to stop what is truth. We are beautiful beings who are profoundly responsible for each other. The Quran notes that it is the whisperings of the Shaitan [evil spirits who strive to create discomfort in individuals by whispering negative thoughts and rationalizations] and an attachment to the world, which prevent man from helping others. I declare, we are broader, more empathetic, and more responsible than this. There are close to 8 billion people that reside within this world, yet the irony is that we often feel incredibly alone and distant from other human beings. Yet we have family, friends, associates, and most importantly encounter others on a daily basis. The deeper wisdom here is that in these relationships and encounters, each and every one of them, stand the opportunity to teach us something about ourselves and our place in the world and others’ purpose within our lives.

When you encounter someone while living in your moment realize they are there for a reason, either to edify or to be edified. Do not miss this chance! Every moment: See what you are looking at, look at what you see. Listen to what you hear and hear what you listen to. Doing this will assure that your Spirit (you) will receive, achieve, and share what is offered to its fullest. This is Wisdom. This is Enlightenment. This is seizing the moment. CANNABUSHI An Infusion Series

Happy New Year to all of you out there! Hopefully everyone made some amazing memories from the holidays, closing the door of a very historical year. 2020 changed the world as we know it. Covid-19 forced a lot of us to face new challenges inside and out. Now that a new year is upon us, let's take the opportunity to be better than the year before- to ourselves as well as others. I'm so thankful and grateful to write this article, especially while I'm #tokinarokin on the new Rokin Dial, with 21 different temperature settings, an autodraw feature and can be used with any 510 cartridge! Use my promo code CANNABUSHI at checkout for a Rokin good discount! It keeps me dialed in while cooking wonderful foods! So let's start our mornings out right! Breakfast is the most important meal especially when it's infused! Wakey Bakey, Eggs and Steaky! Dedicated to Mulufua "Johnny" Gaoa

Agent Orange Eggs and Steaky Breakfast Skillet Ingredients Carton of Grade A large eggs 1 12 oz. New York Strip 1 sweet onion 1 zucchini 1 yellow squash 1 handful of sliced mushrooms 4 cloves of fresh chopped garlic 1 2ml bottle of Agent Orange terpene profile provided by True Terpenes 1 cup THC infused coconut oil ¼ cup THC infused butter 2 oz THC infused sugar 1 tsp THC infused sea salt 1 tsp black pepper 1 Tbsp freshly dried "herbs" ⅛ cup Whole Milk

58

Instructions First I just wanted to inform you that the infusion ingredients were created using the Magical Butter Machine. You can find a plethora of recipes on their website. The sugar and salt require a tincture to be infused. So hop on over and check it out! Grab a large sauté pan or skillet and put it over a medium heat. Sprinkle some infused salt and pepper with a dash of coconut oil. Let it warm up until the oil is ready and the pepper begins to have a slight smell. Throw your steak onto the pan and listen for the sizzle. Cook the steak for around 5-8 minutes and let it get a nice sear. Flip and then add salt/pepper to the steak. Cooking for another 5-8 minutes until mid rare (my personal preference.) At this point you will want to take the steak off the heat and let it rest until you are ready to cut. (7 minute minimum please). Throw in some butter (2 tbls) and your veggies. Use the same oil from your steak for added umami. If you need to add a little more coconut oil, feel free at this time. Make sure to stir the veggies well so everything is thoroughly covered in butter/oil mixture until cooked. After your veggies are fully cooked place them on a plate off to the side for later use. I used a small bowl with a pre-bloomed oil/water mix of Agent Orange Terpenes. 3-4 drops is plenty! 2 oz. oil/water mixture is fine. I shake the terpene mix in a small, sealed

container for a minute and let bloom for 5 minutes. Stir the veggies and terpenes thoroughly. Wash and reuse your large sauté pan or skillet and start preparing your eggs in a medium/large bowl. Separate 6-8 eggs and throw the shells away. Pour your milk in and add a dash of infused salt. Using a whisk make sure to mix all ingredients together. Put your skillet back on the stove over a medium/low heat and toss a couple oz. of infused oil and three pads (Tbls) of butter. Let it all melt until liquid and throw a sprinkle of infused sugar. Once slightly melted into the oil, pour your egg mixture over a medium/low heat. While the eggs are being cooked, go over and slice your now cooled off steak into thin slices. The eggs should have a slightly cooked layer on the underside, enough to float the thinly sliced steak. Add another dash of infused salt to taste. Plus sprinkle the "fresh herbs" and garlic over it all. Place the Agent Orange veggies into the center of your Eggs and Steaky skillet.

Cook for a final 5-8 minutes and enjoy! Use the leftover "juices" from the veggies and drizzle lightly over the completed meal to enhance the Agent Orange terpene experience!! Thanks to True Terpenes. I hope you all have enjoyed reading/creating this exceptional breakfast dish! As always I truly enjoy bringing these infused foods from my kitchen to your plate! Especially if it gets us baked! Be prepared for an exciting year of new foods from CannaBushi. Don't worry because I will be adding a couple of my favorite sushi rolls over the next year. COOKING WITH CANNABIS Elevated Dinner Party >>> BY CHEF GARRICK UMLAND

designate areas of the space for other cannabis consumption and relaxation. Have somewhere comfortable for your guests for after dinner or if they need to take a break. Your guests’ comfort will help ensure an amazing time. Any good dinner party starts with cocktails. When throwing an elevated dinner party, it is a good idea to stay away from alcohol. You will find these cannabis mocktails a wonderful alternative. Not only are they delicious, but they are also a great way to start the party off on high note. In next month's issue we will discuss the flow of the party, dosing, balancing highs, and the first course you can consider offering at your elevated dinner party.

62

Happy New Year to all! Over the last several months we have discussed various aspects of cooking with cannabis. Now, let us utilize what we have learned and throw the ultimate elevated dinner party. Throwing a cannabis dinner party can be a great way to introduce cannabis to nonsmokers as well as showcasing your culinary expertise. This guide will ensure your guests leave with smiles all around. Like any good dinner party, putting together a well thought out plan is essential. Ask yourself a few simple questions to get started: Who is coming? What is the theme? Where will it be hosted?

What is the theme? Everyone loves a good theme to a party. To help with this, think of the last great event you went to. What really worked well and what did not work so well. The theme of your party can be intertwined in what food you will serve and go as far as requiring guests to dress up. When deciding the theme, keep in mind the guests you have invited. You want to create a nice harmony between guests, theme, menu, and décor. Lastly, when thinking of a theme, make sure it is something that would bring a smile to your face if you were the one opening the invitation. Afterall, this is your event, and you are in control.

Who is coming to the party? Putting together a guest list will not only ensure you have enough food, but more importantly, ensure your guests have a great time. Do not invite the neighborhood. Be selective in who you invite, especially if this is your first dinner party. Keeping the guest list small can create an extra sense of intimacy within the group. Invite guests with similar views on cannabis, preferably people who have gotten high before or have great interest in trying to consume cannabis. Finally, make sure the guests you invite are ones you trust and could see yourself getting high with.

Where will it be hosted? When planning your elevated dinner party, you need to keep in mind the surroundings your guest will be in. Is the space clean and inviting? Just like when you go out to dinner yourself, you would not want to eat in a dirty restaurant. Look around for spaces that can accommodate your guest list and theme. Maybe it’s a friend’s home that has a wonderful space for entertaining. Cannabis Simple Syrup Yield: 3 cups Prep Time: 40 minutes Total Time: 2 hours

Ingredients 3 cups of filtered water 3 cups fine granulated sugar 2 tablespoons vegetable glycerin 2g finely chopped/ground decarboxylated cannabis 1 jar or bottle 1 saucepan Strainer or cheesecloth Instructions Add the sugar and water in the saucepan. Bring to a boil. Stir until sugar is completely dissolved then add the cannabis. Cover the pot and allow it to boil gently for another 20 minutes. To prevent the liquid from getting too hot, keep the liquid at a low roiling boil. At the 20-minute mark, reduce the temperature. Add the glycerin. Let the mixture simmer for another 5-6 minutes, keeping a close eye on the pot. Remove the lid and quickly stir every minute. Remove the pot from the heat. Carefully pour the hot syrup through the strainer or cheesecloth into your container. Go slowly. Do not burn yourself! Let the mixture cool.
