Building Good Cannabis Karma
Bond Road Cannabis Company is Las Vegas’ local boutique cannabis operation that grows flower with classic grace and style. Bond Road is a brand that should be at the top of every local and tourist’s cannabis consumption list. Named after Mrs. Bond, a Las Vegas local from a generation long forgotten, Bond Road Cannabis has a 1950s retro feel reminiscent of an era when Vegas was a town of class and style that focused on the customer’s needs and desires. A time when visitors staying in Las Vegas felt like stars, privileged to receive nothing but the highest quality amenities by the friendly and professional service people who provided them. Two signature Bond Road strains that take the stage in Vegas are Bonded 99 and the local favorite, Bond Road Kush. These plants are grown in a 2,275 square feet facility with the attention and love that only a boutique cannabis company can offer. But thanks to Jonathan Krajnak, these two strains are just the beginning. At the base of all quality companies are the people that make it happen. Leading Bond Road Cannabis is General Manager Jonathan Krajnak. Krajnak was hired in June 2016, and Bond Road Cannabis Company was scheduled to begin production that year. Two weeks after being hired, Krajnak blew out his knee. During that time, the owners of Bond Road postponed starting up the operation, giving Krajnak time to heal. Krajnak, trying to avoid taking opiates post-surgery, needed to find a strong strain to help with the pain. That’s when he discovered GG5 formerly known as Gorilla Glue #5, a strain known for its high THC potency and effective pain relief. Krajnak purchased the flower from a local dispensary and found himself extremely disappointed. “It was terrible.”

Recovering from surgery and with time on his hands, Krajnak emailed Ross Johnson and Don Peabody the creators of the original GG genetics. Why was the GG he smoked not as strong as the GG everyone else claimed to be smoking? Low and behold, the GG5 that Krajnak was smoking was a knock-off that hijacked the name. Not a true GG strain. Luckily, Johnson was able to get him true GG, and after his first hit, Krajnak knew this was the strain he wanted to grow. Krajnak realized what was missing in Las Vegas was a true GG strain. He did everything he could to convince the owners of Bond Road Cannabis Co. to let him grow the GG strain in their soon-to-be facility. The answer was a constant, no. With Bond Road still waiting to begin production, Krajnak, now healed up, took a job as a budtender and helped launch MMJ America. “I really wanted to get to know what locals wanted as far as their weed and what the market was missing.” He spent 20 months at MMJ America, with eight to nine months as a budtender before taking on the role of manager. During that time he got to know the locals, made long-lasting connections, doing his own market research. Krajnak said goodbye to his team at MMJ America when it was time to launch Bond Road. Krajnak, like so many Las Vegas locals, comes from the service industry. For many years prior to his cannabis career, Krajnak was a casino pit manager. After being laid off because of changes at Harrah’s casino, he took a $12 an hour job as a grunt working with cannabis. “Telling my wife, there’s a plan to all of this and her thinking I hit my head on something.” The transition wasn’t a simple one. Now fast-forward to 2020, the year of continuous problems. Aside from the obvious COVID-19 issues that plagued all industries, even cannabis, Bond Road had their own internal issues. Eventually, the owners of Bond Road approved Krajnak to grow GG strains, however, doing so successfully became a major issue, from low potency to under performing yields. After numerous failures, Krajnak and his team needed to step back and regroup. They are now focusing on their Bond Road strains, which continue to be successful for the
company. However, they haven’t dismissed GG. Moving forward, Krajnak plans on doing smaller, test grows until they reach the potency and yield they’re looking for. Quality strains are not Krajnak’s only concern. For him, the top priority is building a successful team of employees. “I like seeing my employees grow.” Krajnak says with pride. “We offer a living wage here. If you aren’t making at least $14-$15 an hour, people can’t live.” “If you do the right thing, I believe that, somehow, the Marijuana Gods will take care of you.” proclaims Krajnak. “That may sound corny, but I believe that if you do your job honestly and with integrity, you make a true and honest effort to take care of the people that take care of your plants; eventually things will balance out and work the way they should. I truly believe that.”

Bridging the Gap Within the Industry >>>By: Jennifer Walker
Jennifer Walker reconnects with her hometown friend and musician, George Nektarios Lagis of the Thrash band Aftermath and owner of Lathokambos Industrial Hemp Grower, to discuss his family-run business. From Illinois to Nevada, the similarities within a booming industry resonate with growers from every part of our land. JENNIFER WALKER: What a crazy, full circle story... when we last spoke, I had just gotten started working within the cannabis/hemp space with my own endeavors in Nevada, and you were one of my first supporters- all the way from Illinois. I remember reconnecting with you online and over the phone because not only were you intrigued to hear what I was up to, but you yourself had ambitions within the cannabis/hemp industry. Previous to to 2018, I don’t think you and I had seen one another since I moved away from our hometown some 15 or so years ago! I’m looking at your hemp grow photos right now and thinking, how did my former classmate from high school turn his idea into a reality? But, you did it! GEORGE N. LAGIS: Yes, I remember we spoke on the phone right when you were first starting up with your work endeavors. Thank you, it is slowly becoming something that I would like to become as large as I can create it. It’s all baby steps. J: We grew up together in the same town, went to school together, and both had interest in cannabis, hemp and that culture. Twenty-five years later, we find ourselves in this business in different capacities. G: Right. J: It’s such a weird parallel. I’ve been working for the cannabis magazine and I started to notice this trend growing in 2016/2017 with CBD. I didn’t know anything about it, it was brand new and I thought, how am I going to get into this? I’m here in Nevada, I have access to this kind of information, and at that time, this side of the country was ahead of the game with

recreational cannabis legalization as well... G: If anyone was going to be one of the first, I would assume Vegas was, especially with all those tourists visiting. J: I totally agree. It was Colorado, California, Oregon, Nevada – we were all kind of one after the other. You and I both have this entrepreneurial way of figuring things out. Some people have that ambitious streak. We just kind of throw caution to the wind and say “well, I see some potential here, let’s figure this out.” You were really interested in learning about hemp and farming and willing to put in the time and effort to do it right. Let’s backtrack a little. What got you interested in starting the farm? G: Well, I spend a lot of time at my fatherin-law’s farm land. He’s got around 350 acres in Illinois which my family goes out to for recreation as well as do some of the chores. Do some hunting and what not. My father-in-law has livestock and has a farmer rent his acreage for corn. I’ve always entertained the idea and learned about farming here and there. The Farm Bill in 2018 passed in Illinois to grow (hemp) and I found out about it because I am a member of Cook County Financial Insurance - they insure my house and my vehicles and they give me a newsletter which I read. I was intrigued by an article that was included at the time regarding the Farm Bill passing allowing hemp to be grown in Illinois after approximately sixty or so years, after it was not allowed to be grown. And, I just kind of immediately got into a two plus two scenario - I have access to the land, I know nothing about growing hemp, this sounds like a good idea!
J: (laughs) I love it! So, remember when I first started West CBD Oil and you ordered some products from me...we started talking, and I had sent you a couple little hemp seeds from Nevada...remember that? G: That’s right... J: We weren’t sure if they were going to take in your climate. I had no idea about the horticulture of it. Were you ever able to grow those seeds? G: I planted those seeds outside in my yard (Cherry Wine hemp seeds) in little separate styrofoam cups. I think there were 12 seeds and I grew them. You know, I waited a few days for something to sprout. Nothing happened. I had to leave town and was away for about a week. When I came back after that trip, 8 of the 12 had sprouted and were about an inch to a half of an inch tall and were displaying a couple of small leaves... J: Wow... G: I was just, eyes wide open, thinking hey these might actually grow! I monitored them and they were growing and at the time, I didn’t know anything about fertilization or light cycles or any of the scientific requirements to get these growing to optimal potential. I just watered them and left them in the sun. So, 8 plants grew and the only information I knew was general stuff about male and female plants. I wasn’t concerned with having the males. If they were going to turn male, then so be it. As it turned out, as they grew, I think 2 of the 8 plants turned out to be male, 6 of them were female and I just watched the males pollinate my females
one day as a bee went to snoop around. I saw pollen and I was just like a proud father! I watched the males pollinate the females and I was very happy and I just kind of saw things happen. Here in Illinois the soil is so fertile, it just holds and retains water after the rain so we don’t need to irrigate here as much, if at all. J: That makes sense. I remember from being a kid, when we had backyards in Skokie, it’s true that the soil is so fertile and there’s so much moisture to work with. You really are in a great area for doing what you are doing. G: Yah, part of the major corn belt. J: So you were just feeling your way through it but ultimately, once you started putting in crops and really getting some organization on the farm, are you now growing hemp for cultivating to sell off to people? Are you making products? Are you distilling it and making oil? G: I would have to say, yes I am to the C part of the question...I think you had an A, B and C question. 2019 was my introductory year and a very late start in the year and I grew in a very untraditional, midwestern fashion. I grew kind of an old Aztec or Mayan method of farming called “chinampas” which is in the ground. I dug trenches into the ground and I had my plants in pods so I flooded the trenches to water my plants rather than water my plants on the ground. A trench contains water for a couple days allowing me time to not water as often and it drains as well. This year we have expanded to growing in the ground with minimal tillage which seems to be kind of a trend in farming. The thing is to minimally till the ground, keeping as much carbon in the soil as possible to not let it just emanate in the air and disappear. And I grew about an acre-and-a-half or so worth of plants. My focus this year was a lot of time spent learning how to grow and tend to the plants that are growing and alleviate males from the females for obvious reasons. My intent this year was to grow plants to their biggest potential and I will be processing to oil soon. I currently have not a huge amount, but I have about 150 pounds of biomass which is a very introductory level. But, it’s a stepping stone to where I need to be in the next few years. I am looking forward to the next 3-5 years from now, and how I need to take those lessons and accomplish the
goal. So, I will be processing oil this year. J: So, because the land belongs to your family, you have the freedom in a way for trial and error; to learn as you go. G: Yes. God bless my father-in-law for allowing me a little bit of land to play with. He’s very supportive in my experimental endeavor. J: That’s amazing. Weren’t you one of the first people in Illinois to get licensing? G: I think the first year of licensing in 2019 there were 570 some odd licenses. I was number 435 or so, so I was one of the first hemp growing licenses to be given. At that time, if you wanted a license in Illinois, applied and paid for it, you were pretty much given a license.
J: That’s a beautiful story because it is such a personal thing and there’s history to it. G: Yah, it ties it really close to heart. J: Some people talk about hemp like it’s this new and trendy thing, but hemp is probably the first crop that we’ve grown on this planet! G: Yes, for many years. China has produced for thousands of years. We here in the United States are far behind on a few agriculture aspects that may help the rest of the planet if we just kind of toned down the dial on how much we exploit the ground. We could be doing a hell of a lot better.
J: Likely a lot of people applied and you were in that first 500, so that is insanely cool!
J: I completely agree and pretty much everybody in this portion of the industry agrees with you there. A lot of regulations and federal stuff getting in the way. This is the most indiginous part of our human history, truly...
G: Very cool, yah
G: Yes, this one goes back a long way.
J: Since you are on family land and working, do you have your family members helping you? Would you say this is a “family run” business?
J: As far as the market in Illinois, I know there are hot spots around the United States. Industrial hemp grows are definitely flourishing in the midwest now. Do you find you have a lot of competition in your market?
G: I’d say yes, Lathokambos is a family owned and operated hemp grower. My wife helps me out a bit in the field. All 3 of my kids help me in the field. I’ve also spent a lot of time in the field with my father, as well. J: It’s really a family story in a way, which is wonderful. The name is Greek, what does it mean? G: Lathokambos derives from my father’s village in Greece, the name of the village is a little bit different from my business name, but basically under Turkish rule, a Turkish soldier stumbled upon the valley as he was patrolling the region and coined a term which means “olive tree grove”...it’s a vast valley of olive trees that grew as far as the eye could see. The main product that the village was producing was olive oil due to everyone in the village having portions of acreage. They would grow, harvest and take their olives to the mill and then press olive oil. As I was fertilizing my plants one day last year knowing that I wanted to create oil, it kind of just dawned on me that would be a great name for my hemp business. It just made sense - oil is oil.
G: I’ve dabbled here and there with some other farms in Wisconsin who also have ties to some guys in Kentucky and Tennessee, so I have witnessed with my eyes a warehouse that contains currently 500,000 pounds of biomass that was unable to be moved from 2019. What I’ve seen is more or less a flooded market on the CBD side. That kind of took me by surprise. Midway through my grow this summer, I had to really reassess what it is I am aiming for. And, of course, other cannabinoids like CBG are kind of more pronounced now- a lot of people are growing CBG as well as other cannabinoids or at least isolating them when they do process oil. Depending on the process (chromatography for example) can separate each of the cannabinoids and kind of get more out of one harvest than just focusing on CBG. I just need to reassess where I’m at, where I’m going and how I need to get there. J: CBG is definitely in demand. CBN is another one. Indica-dominant cannabis strains can have a high CBN profile which

is the hot cannabinoid for sleep and pain relief at the moment... G: There’s so much information out there. The Illinois Hemp Cooperative has a lot of information and is quite a supportive group and when people have questions, including myself, people are supportive with their answers. No one is really negative and everyone is trying to help each other out. There are some bad apples in there that kind of throw some stink in the wind but you gotta get past that, that’s life. J: Putting your business name out there in a completely different part of the market (here in Nevada) has the potential to yield interest from buyers or investors- people can come out of the woodwork when something like this happens. G: I know I am on a small scale, personally. However, I am working with a few people as part of a network, a co-op, and each of us are growing certain strains and trying to figure out which of the ones we are all trying to grow work best in the midwest, especially in Illinois. We are trying to figure out which strains work best for CBD value or CBG value and in order to grow more of it while remaining compliant. J: Aside from hemp cultivation, you are also a musician. You were always someone who was into music and art. Obviously the story of how the Lathokambos name came to be is sort of a romantic idea - do you incorporate any other of your artistic identity into the business? G: I don’t have any merchandise yet but I did design my logo. I have a graphic arts degree, I have a multi-media production and
design degree which I use here and there. So as it happened, I used my degree for my own business to design my own logo! J: I figured there would be some cool tie in with that because you were definitely an artist in school... G: I still do some design work for some close friends. As far as music is concerned, I happened to be introduced, or offered, an instrument to be played. I play bass in a Thrash band currently, Aftermath is the name of the band. That came about by accident. My daughter and the band manager’s daughter were in kindergarten together and, overnight, I became their bass player. I’ve been playing with these guys since 2018 but they’ve been around for a lot longer. J: Had you ever played bass in a band before or was this the first time? G: I have always gravitated towards base lines in music. Although I played a little bit of guitar, I have always played a bass line on the guitar. J: This couldn’t be a more inspiring time for you, for your business, for your hemp grow, for your music. It’s also a very challenging time due to COVID-19, obviously. There’s no live music and there are all these restrictions and limitations on things. As far as Aftermath is concerned, are guys in the studio working on stuff? Have you done any live streaming?
G: We are currently writing new material. The album that we released last year, early 2019, is called There is Something Wrong - a concept record per se. What’s currently happening in government now, was being unleashed on this record. It is kind of unbelievable how the timing just makes sense. And, we released this year a cover of John Lennon’s Give Peace a Chance that we turned into kind of a Thrashy version. It’s a message of hope and that timing couldn’t have been more apropos as rioting happened soon after that song was released. And, listening to it while watching the news, you can create your own video, but there is video out on YouTube for it, as well. J: Yah, you guys got hit really hard in the midwest with riots. Way more than we did here in Nevada. G: Yah, it was not a fun time to be watching television. J: It was so great catching up with you. You’re very informed and inspired by what you’re doing and that makes it easy to root for your success. Between the two of us, with our Niles West High School education, we’ve figured some things out in life! (laughs) G: Oh girl, we’re lucky we graduated (laughs)... J: Right?! Somehow, we made it!

An Herbalist's Guide to Sleep
Feeling refreshed and energized in the morning can set the precedent for the rest of the day, and to no surprise, sleeping has a lot to do with that. Sleep is a basic human function, we all do it whether we love it or not. We know that sleep is essential for long-term health, healing, recovery, and regeneration. So why is it so hard to get some sleep? As with all-natural healing, a multi-step approach can be achieved with little to no cost involved. Don't worry Not only does worrying make it difficult for the mind and body to relax, but there truly is not an exact number of hours that you should be getting; eight hours is more of an average. In a few sentences, here’s why: Everybody's sleeping needs reflect their own unique genetic make-up, lifestyle, physical environment, and many other unpreventable factors. Some people just do not need that much sleep, when others could zzz all day and need more. Like most things in life, quality is more important than quantity. Growing wiser Not sleeping as much as you used to? It might be helpful to know that as we get older, our bodies just do not need as much sleep and it naturally gets more difficult to achieve deep sleeps. Normal aging also naturally comes with longer and more frequent wake-ups. If this sounds like your situation, you might be normal after all. Insomnia (why is it so hard to get some sleep?!) and hypersomnolence (how am I still tired?!) are amongst the most common sleeping complaints among the aging population. In fact, 57% of the elderly are considered to have chronic insomnia, in my eyes that percentage reflects big pharmas agenda on coping with a perfectly normal human occurrence. Consistency is key This might seem daunting, especially for the spontaneous type, but consistency really is important to getting good sleep. That is why there are so many technologically savvy sleeping apps out there, and also why you have probably already heard about screenless bedtime routines. Switching coffee for tea is one of the best ways to get more healing herbs in your life. Also, regular caffeine intake may actually lead to chronic fatigue. Journaling can help to monitor alcohol, caffeine, sugar intake, screen time, exercise can help realize problematic areas. Then, of course taking actionable steps to at least cutting those anti-sleep culprits down. Stress management Psychological factors account for half of insomnia cases. Unresolved past stresses, loss, overwhelm, anxiety, and worry, can cause exhaustion and fatigue due to adrenal and hormonal depletion. Some mind body

work like using tapping therapy, meditation, using worksheets and books, self-work, and professional help when it is needed. Adaptogenic herbs are extremely useful for stress and mood imbalances. Sleep during COVID-19 A 1000 person study conducted in May found that the majority of participants felt that the lockdown changed their sleep schedule by going to bed later, and taking more naps during the day. The restriction of social interaction had extended to a decrease in physical activity and mobility, though an increase of stress may have sent sleeping patterns into sleeping disarray. Transient insomnia is the scientific term for the few rough nights before and during a stressful experience. Stress and anxiety related to uncertainty and increased screen time all have a direct impact on sleep. When to seek intervention Every once in a while we will be faced with times of either lack of or excess sleep. Diet, stress, and lifestyle habits are often suspected here, though not required to mess up a good night’s rest. However, when there are seriously disruptive or irregular patterns in your regular sleep cycle three or more nights for a few weeks to months with no known cause, see a professional for potential infection, pathogens, or diseases as a precaution. Herbal Remedies After using strength, courage, and willpower to act upon the practices needed for a restful sleep, the next step could be to implement botanicals to help. First, I must mention hops (Humulus lupulus). I am not suggesting that you go grab a beer, but rather that you grab a few grams of dried hop flowers to drink as a tea. This incredibly bitter and almost unpalatable tea should be consumed quickly RIGHT before bed. To draw up an image about its potency, when I was attending graduate school, we were asked to do a lab making hops tea. In the middle of the day, I carefully identified, examined, and researched the herb, then conducted an experiment on myself. After an almost 5 hour ‘nap’, the sedative effects finally shrugged off in time for bed. So lesson learned, dried hops can be an inexpensive, effective, plantbased alternative. If you can get past the taste that not even honey can help, that is. If hops is the bitter heavy hitter, then lavender, chamomile, and holy basil tea are the lightweights that can be brewed into tea and drank as a part of your new bedtime routine. Motherwort (despite its witchy name) and passionflower are excellent lightmedium strength relaxing tea choices as well. If anxiety is involved, more potent kava kava and heavily researched valerian can be useful, but those are more commonly used in a capsule or tincture form.
Cannabis There is mixed evidence about cannabis and sleep, and this is probably due to studies observing different dosages, tolerances, plant genetics, human genetics, and a variety of other factors. Though we do know that cannabis affects the endocannabinoid system which is involved with circadian rhythm sleep-wake cycle, THC is known to have acutely sedating effects at the cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptor of the central nervous system. Though major studies still need to be conducted regarding cannabis for insomnia, some small studies have shown that both THC and CBD have been associated with improved quality of sleep in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One study that came out of Australia showed that 10mg THC to 200mg CBD was useful for sleep. That 1:20 THC to CBD ratio was decided by researchers as optimal to induce the effects of feeling tired without impairing cognition, but is by no means a ‘golden ratio’. Nutrients With a nutrient deficiency, you can pretty much expect to be tired. Magnesium is one of those vitamins that result in daytime fatigue since it's a nutrient required for energy production, muscles, nerves, and blood glucose. Other vitamins associated with tiredness and fatigue are iron, zinc, and vitamins K and B12. Christmas Stress or Year-Round Bliss? bringing Joy to the world, your family, and Community through mindfulness
I’ve been asked to voice my understanding of how stressful the holiday season and in particular gift giving can be. I could not begin to imagine a better outlook, approach, and understanding of this topic than Exclasius’ Christmas Dissertation by Masmalio on YouTube. I highly recommend watching this, for it has amazing grace and impact. I will do my best to bring its value and pertinence here and address some alternatives to stress. The concept of Christmas and the holiday season has turned to being about mandatory obligations, worry, creating unnecessary debt, and stress. How stress? Well, people traverse this time of year with great stress and anticipation as they feel it mandatory to make their last-minute gift purchases and God help them if they fail to remember everyone they NEED to get a present for this one time a year. Check and double check the list. Others suffer stress organizing travel plans and finalizing their New Year’s resolutions. All things that are advertised as “happy” and “joy filled” things to do but alas – stress over them! What is a useful way to deal with such stress? Proven to reduce stress is to live in the moment. I suggest you just clear your mind and appreciate the holidays. Appreciate every moment given to spend with loved ones, friends, acquaintances, and those who have been an influence in your life, or with whom you have been an influence in theirs. The holiday season affords such opportunities. Be mindful of the positive moments shared and dismiss all the things that you believe others have negatively done to you or the things about them that you disagree with; this is the most positive gift you can give and/or receive. The holidays are the last mass acceptance of the truth that it’s best to love, accept, forgive, appreciate, and edify each other. Although I understand that it is most useful to do this every moment of our lives, our culture has set aside the Christmas holiday to accept and recognize this. So, don’t stress; observe and apply.
Be mindful of the feelings of warmth, love, and compassion, of giving and receiving. Know that there is great peace and joy to experience once you take a moment to appreciate the company of others. Meditate, pray, and embrace nature during this time, it is widely accepted and practiced. Recognize how it feels and hold on to that recognition. In doing so, you can take the holiday experience along with you the entire 365 days of the year. Where’s the stress in that? An important step to reduce stress and suffering for you and others is to think about anyone you may have wronged and anyone who may have wronged you or upset you at some point in your life whether done intentionally or not. As you picture them in your mind, say out loud, “I’m sorry, please forgive me, I forgive you, thank you.” I recently read about the Hawaiian practice of Ho’oponopono, which is the practice of forgiveness and reconciliation. Forgiveness and reconciliation are often major goals of most new starts. New Year’s Resolutions, perhaps? I reiterate that giving; whether tangible gifts or gifts of assistance, compassion, love, and/or positive reinforcement, is most appropriate and useful when done the entire year, contrariwise to the capitalistic commercialization of the season. Realize that using whatever techniques you can to access a higher level of awareness of the warm and satisfying feelings you experience during this time of year will allow you to give year ‘round. You’ll encounter an even greater satisfaction in giving when done as you wish to give as opposed to giving because the holiday dictates you give. Once you see this mindfulness, you will enjoy the holiday season without stress; even appreciate the truth that whether you gave or received some tangible commercialized proof of love; that unconditional love and compassion given anytime is a greater gift. Yes, recognizing and applying mindfulness this holiday season will increase the quality of your thoughts and bring more joy unto your
family, community, and the world. You will naturally participate in this truthful gift giving year-round. It is said that once you occupy a few minutes of quiet time in your day, relax, engage with your surroundings, and recognize the positive influences given and received in your life, you will realize that you, too, are a creature of the natural world, and are perfect. Truly, what better gift or New Year’s resolution could you make? COMMEMORAting Celebration Pipes For 47 years, the publicity-shy artist who prefers to be called “DaPiper” has been hand crafting and selling connoisseur-grade 22k gold marijuana pipes that are like no other. At an output of about 3,000 units per year, neary 150,000 pipes have emerged from his humble studio since he launched the counterculture project in Hawaii in 1973. BY CURT ROBBINS As Celebration Pipes fast approaches 50 years of continuous production of golden ganja goblets, the company plans to discontinue production in 2023. Between now and then, Celebration Pipes will make another 10,000 or so units—completely by hand and involving zero automation. Technically, every Celebration Pipes piece is unique, differing slightly from its siblings.
Gold: Ornate & Efficient All Celebration pipes feature a bowl plated in 22k gold. Beyond cosmetic appeal, the gold serves the technical role of reflecting the heat generated in the bowl back into the loose-leaf plant material or concentrate therein. In the process, the pipe remains unusually cool to the touch, even during prolonged seshes. According to the DaPiper, this thermal isolation creates a more even and efficient burn. From my experience, the gold bowl is especially adept at handling hash or other dense concentrates. with Mendocino water hash. “22 karat is just about perfect from an engineering perspective.” DaPiper told me about how, years ago, he experimented with molds. “I tried to do it the mold way and they turned out horrible. I ended up throwing all of those in the ocean...they were so bad,” he said. A trademark of all Celebration Pipes is DaPiper’s initials and the model year hand carved on the bottom of the bowl. To ensure the health and safety of users, all Celebration Pipes are made from only clay, iron oxide, and a variety of precious metals. Plastics, resins, glues, and other substances capable of toxic off-gassing when heated have never played a part in the crafting of these coveted collectibles. The use of gold also allows the pipes to maintain—and even increase—in value. “Think about it,” DaPiper told me. “In ‘73, gold was $110 an ounce. Rock Stars & Celebs If Celebration’s pipes themselves aren’t impressive enough, the list of rock stars and celebrities who own them is off the charts. From Bob Marley and Fleetwood Mac to Aerosmith and Woody Harrelson, DaPiper has presented his now-classic pot puffers to dozens of A-listers. Other recipients include Jefferson Airplane, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, and rapper B Real from Cypress Hill. Since its inception, music producers and promoters have been hiring Celebration Pipes to create custom sets for a range of bands and artists. Often, DaPiper’s clients ask him to present the pipes to the band’s members in person, typically after a concert. Given the long list of musicians and celebs who own Celebration pipes, I couldn’t resist asking the person behind this cornerstone of the cannabis culture about his favorite gifting experience. “In August of ‘78, Bob Marley came to Hawaii, in Honolulu. He wrapped the tour in Maui,” said DaPiper, who founded the company in the Aloha State. After the concert, he presented Marley and his bandmates with their pipes. “It was beyond spiritual. The guy is flat amazing. To this day, nothing can really top that one,” he said. The Marley adventure continued, however. “About five years ago, I was hired by a promoter in LA to present Ziggy Marley and his band with Celebration pipes. Ziggy remembered the gold pipes I presented to his dad’s band...he was only seven or eight years old then!” The list of Celebration pipe owners extends beyond musicians to actors and politicians. Actor Daryl Hannah, former Mexican president Vicente Fox, pot-centric entertainers Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, NORML founder Keith Stroup, and the late Hugh Hefner of Playboy Magazine all own Celebration pipes.

High Times Magazine and was a sponsor and supporter of NORML during the pioneering group’s inception. “I was one of the first advertisers in High Times in 1974,” said DaPiper during our kitchen interview, the island littered with dog-eared photos and rare original copies of the iconic marijuana magazine. “I advertised my Celebration Pipes in issue number one and for many years after,” he said as he showed me his first ads. After sharing stories of the early days, DaPiper reflected on the culture today. “Most of the folks from the scene back then are either in prison or dead,” he said with resigned sobriety. “Bob Snodgrass and I are the only ones left,” he joked with a chuckle, referring to the veteran master glass artist who gained inspiration from the Grateful Dead in the 1970s.
Precious Pink for Breast Cancer The 11th and final color to be added to the Celebration Pipes catalog is Precious Pink. Inspired by DaPiper’s wife’s successful battle with breast cancer, this model donates a portion of sales to a non-profit that helps women with the disease receive CBD therapy. DaPiper, resolved in his plan to drop the mic on his tenacious company at year 50, told me that the special limited edition pink is the last color that will ever be added to the lineup.
The Road Ahead “What are you going to do after you stop making 3,000 gold-plated premium pipes every year, sir?” I asked DaPiper as we drank strong coffee and poured over aging photos. “We’ve had a good run. We touched a lot of people and had some great times with some wonderful folks. I think I wanna spend time helping my daughter with her business and playing with my granddaughter. She’ll be preschool age when I wrap up Celebration Pipes,” he replied. Founded by cannabis professionals and advocates with years of active industry experience, the Chamber’s mission was designed and spearheaded by its executive board: President Tina Ulman, Vice President Dani Baranowski, Secretary Shelby Stanley, and Director of Membership Ashley Ciliberti. Alongside these leaders is a diverse group of industry voices committed to ensuring representation and inclusivity at every level. “We saw an opportunity to unite industry professionals who want to foster resources and connections and move cannabis commerce forward in Nevada with better representation and inclusion,” said Ulman. From working on strengthening commerce to improving justice, accountability, and representation, the Chamber is working with regulators, stakeholders, and industry professionals to grow industry opportunities for community members. While cannabis lounges were left to languish during the last legislative session of 2019, cannabis was deemed an essential industry in the early stages of the COVID pandemic. One of the specific opportunities the Chamber is focusing on is safe and equitable social use venues as a source of additional revenue for our pandemic-stricken state. “Currently we sell cannabis, but have made it illegal to consume it, which puts all consumers at risk of being penalized.” said Baranowski. “After four years of legalization, the Chamber sees an opportunity to create a sense of urgency for regulators to revisit this matter and improve it”. The Chamber provides opportunities to connect, share resources, and collaborate with like-minded members. In their first monthly meeting, the Chamber connected cannabis-friendly judges and candidates running in the 2020 election with constituents. For their second meeting, held at 7th and Carson on November 12,
the Chamber invited lobbyist Scot Rutledge to outline a path forward for cannabis consumption lounges to be considered during the 2021 Regular Legislative Session. “Cannabis isn’t going anywhere,” said Rutledge to attendees. “We want [cannabis licensees] to focus on making [the industry] consumer-friendly, inclusive, and use technology to improve this industry.” A part of how we accomplish that, according to Rutledge, is to build a coalition of voices speaking out in unison. “Develop consensus between and amongst different industry sectors,” he said. “Organizations need to speak in one voice to regulators and other interested parties. Three Molecular Families Three primary families of compounds are produced by cannabis: Cannabinoids, flavonoids, and terpenes. Cannabinoids are the most understood of these molecules and include the infamous tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and trendy cannabidiol (CBD). Flavonoids, the least understood of the three groups, exhibit as many health benefits as cannabinoids, including a demonstrated ability to fight systemic inflammation and cancer. Terpenes, the compounds responsible for the sometimes pungent aroma of cannabis, also display significant medical benefits, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and other efficacies. Within the family of cannabinoids are several distinct subgroups called analogs. These include acidic precursors, neutral versions, and varins (among others). Most cannabinoids involve several different analogs. A good example is CBD. This cannabinoid manifests as an acidic precursor (CBDA), the common neutral version (CBD), and a varin version (CBDV). In total, seven analogs of CBD exist. Analogs often feature common efficacies, but in some cases are very different from one another.
Understanding Varins Varin molecules, technically called varinolic cannabinoids, are only beginning to be included in commercial hemp and cannabis product formulations. Among the most popular varin cannabinoids are CBCV, CBDV, CBGV, and THCV. Different families of cannabinoid compounds feature varying chemical structures. Varin molecules have three carbon atoms in their alkyl side chain, while neutral versions of cannabinoids feature five carbon atoms. The newly discovered phoral family of cannabinoids that were identified in 2019 by Italian researchers, including CBDP and THCP, features seven side chain carbon atoms. The molecular structure of these phytomolecules is important because it changes their binding affinity. Binding affinity determines potency and other characteristics of these molecules when they “dock” with microscopic cellular receptors within the endocannabinoid system (including CB1, CB2, GPR17, GPR55, and others).

Of note is the fact that no varin is a scheduled substance by the U.S. federal government. This means that companies considering product formulations involving varin cannabinoids can infuse
them into their products without fear of legal repercussions.
Cannabidivarin (CBDV) Like most cannabinoids, CBDV offers a range of benefits involving different mechanisms. The most significant efficacy of CBDV is its ability to suppress seizure activity. This quality makes it of special interest to 50 million epilepsy patients worldwide— including their caretakers. This non-psychoactive cannabinoid is found primarily in what are commonly labeled “indica” cultivars of cannabis. Varieties of the plant that are rich in CBD typically also produce relatively large volumes of CBDV.
Research Studies A 2019 study entitled “Effects of Cannabidivarin (CBDV) on Brain Excitation and Inhibition Systems in Adults With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)” that was published in the journal Translational Psychiatry found that “a single acute dose of CBDV ‘shifts’ subcortical levels of Glx, the brain’s primary excitatory neurotransmitter, in the living adult human brain.” The researchers reported that their study “suggests that CBDV targets subcortical excitatory glutamate systems both in autistic and neurotypical adults,” but noted that “individual responses in autistic brains vary.” The study “observed a biological response to CBDV in adult men with and without ASD,” but found that CBD alone did not always result in improvement among patients with autism. A 2018 study entitled “Chronic Treatment with Cannabidivarin (CBDV) Rescues Behavioural Alterations and Brain Atrophy in Rett Syndrome” published in the journal Neuropharmacology explored the ability of CBDV to treat this rare neurological disorder that strikes mostly female children. Rett Syndrome typically leads to severe neurological and behavioral impairments, including the inability to speak, walk, and eat. Unfortunately, it features no cure. The research, performed on mice subjects, reported that CBDV acts as an antagonist to the GPR55 receptor in the endocannabinoid system. As a result of this characteristic of its binding affinity, the researchers concluded that “systemic treatment with CBDV rescues behavioural and brain alterations in male mice.”
Cannabigerivarin (CBGV) CBGV, like CBDV, produces no psychoactivity in humans. This cannabinoid displays a range of effects, including the possible ability to enhance the binding affinity of THC molecules with CB1 receptors in the endocannabinoid system. In similar fashion, CBGV may also boost the bioavailability and potency of CBD.
Two major benefits of CBGV are analgesia (decreased pain) and reduced systemic inflammation. This anti-inflammation property, common to dozens of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, is of value in the treatment of literally hundreds of diseases, including arthritis, cancer, Crohn’s disease, and fibromyalgia. CBGV has also demonstrated benefits for skin diseases, particularly those involving excessive dryness.
Research Studies A 2016 study entitled “Effectiveness of Non-psychotropic Phytocannabinoids on Dry Skin and Acne Treatment” that was published in the journal Experimental Dermatology explored the ability of CBGV and a range of other cannabinoids, including CBDV and THCV, to treat diseases involving dry skin. “Our data suggest that CBG and CBGV may have potential in the treatment of dry-skin syndrome,” reported the researchers. The study concluded, “Based on their remarkable anti-inflammatory actions, phytocannabinoids could be efficient, yet safe novel tools, in the management of cutaneous inflammations.” A 2013 study entitled “Non-hallucinogenic Cannabinoids are Effective Anti-cancer Drugs” that was published in the journal Anticancer Research investigated the ability of six common cannabinoids to offer therapy in the treatment of cancer. The researchers examined “two forms of cannabidiol (CBD), two forms of cannabigerol (CBG), and two forms of cannabigerivarin (CBGV).” The study revealed considerable anticancer efficacy in this collection of phytocannabinoids. It reported that “These agents are able to interfere with the development of cancerous cells, stopping them in their tracks and preventing them from growing.” A 2011 study entitled “Effects of Cannabinoids and Cannabinoidenriched Cannabis Extracts on Endocannabinoid Metabolic Enzymes” that was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology explored the effects delivered by 11 different cannabinoids, including CBGV. The study found common benefits among the molecules, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer mechanisms.
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) While THC is infamous for causing an increase in appetite, THCV does the opposite. This is a good example of how slight modifications in the molecular structure of these compounds can dramatically impact efficacy outcomes. THCV is found most commonly in what are called “sativa” varieties of the plant. Like THC (and unlike CBD), THCV delivers psychoactivity, but in a different manner than THC. There is evidence, including anecdotal observations, that a more potent dose of THCV is required to achieve a perceptible psychoactive effect than for THC. However, when stronger doses are achieved, the effect of THCV is often more pronounced than for THC. In addition, therapeutic value has been noted for patients who suffer extreme anxiety and panic attacks. This varin compound may be of value to the millions of people with Post-traumatic
Stress Disorder or social anxiety. Benefit has also been found for those suffering Type 2 diabetes.
Research Studies A 2016 study entitled “Efficacy and Safety of Cannabidiol and Tetrahydrocannabivarin on Patients with Type 2 Diabetes” that was published in the journal Diabetes Care investigated the ability of THCV and CBD to treat this variety of diabetes. “Compared with placebo, THCV significantly decreased fasting plasma glucose,” reported the study’s authors. They also reported the favorable safety profile for this cannabinoid, stating that “CBD and THCV were well tolerated.” A 2011 study entitled “Symptom‐relieving and Neuroprotective Effects of the Phytocannabinoid Δ9‐THCV in Parkinson’s Disease” that was published in the British Journal of Pharmacology explored the ability of THCV to treat diseases involving neurodegeneration and deterioration of cognitive function. Wrote the scientists, “The aim of the present study was to demonstrate that Δ9‐THCV can alleviate the symptoms associated with PD [Parkinson’s disease] by blocking CB1 receptors at low doses.” The study concluded, “Given its antioxidant properties and its ability to activate CB2, but to block CB1 receptors, Δ9‐THCV has a promising pharmacological profile for delaying disease progression in PD and also for ameliorating parkinsonian symptoms.”
Conclusions Varin molecules, analogs to their more common neutral versions, have demonstrated a range of medicinal benefits in humans. This includes anticancer and anti-inflammation mechanisms, reduced anxiety, analgesic properties, decreased epileptic seizure activity, and specific benefits in diseases such as Parkinson’s, leukemia, and Rett Syndrome. Although the legal cannabis markets in North America are only beginning to employ varin molecules in products, watch for members of the varin family of phytocannabinoids to become more common on the shelves of retail dispensaries. It sat in a dark corner partially illuminated by a sliver of yellow light peering in through the holes of the tattered Harris Tweed window covering. Rarely referred to or thought of, it has suddenly taken center stage. I didn’t pay much attention to the initial reports of the discovery. Such claims have been made numerous times over the years, ultimately exposed as fraudulent hoaxes. But not this time. Even the more reputable news stations and papers excitedly continue their updates and musings, excitedly telling that someone or something has managed to move the enormous container, adorned with elaborate carvings and rare jewels, to the forefront of our consciousness. Amid the chaos and discord currently felt the world over, no one had taken notice of the box until now. The sudden and unexpected appearance of Pandora’s Box has created a wildfire of speculation and concern. No longer languishing in darkness and solitude, it has captured everyone’s attention. No one person or persons has taken credit for bringing forth and exposing the box, though many have their suspicions. Debate and differing opinions abound since its discovery. However, the general consensus is that what’s more worrisome and disconcerting than the appearance of the box, is that it is now wide open.

For centuries it was taught and thus believed that like pulling the sword from the Sorcerer’s Stone, opening the box was a feat beyond human capability. Sliding the massive container halfway across a room is one thing, but opening it, quite another.
Many have heard or read stories telling of those who’ve tried to unearth the box’s location then pry the lid free. From efforts of carefully and gracefully picking the ancient lock to abandoning all finesse and smashing the arcane metal. All proved fruitless. The few learned men and women who have managed to integrate science with the unknown, delving into the occult and other esoteric matters, believe there to be Alchemists who employed the application of magical incantations and the saturation of potions poured directly on the lock in order to break the unbreakable. Even their attempts proved unsuccessful. Currently there are even a few docu-series depicting small bands of thrill seekers and adventurers claiming to have found the box then applied the use of modern tools and technology to unlock the secrets held within. Again, none could loosen the grip that held the lid in place. Every story of gallant effort ended the same way; Pandora’s Box is impenetrable. I’ve heard stories of those who profess they sought out and found this Holy Grail of boxes, but were unexpectedly halted in their tracks at the precise moment their eyes feasted upon the glimmering vessel. They say an unearthly voice, one that resonated in their chests, gave warning they reconsider breaking the seal. Others say an invisible and mightily resistant force physically prevented them from approaching any closer than six feet. Most individuals who still hold steadfastly to their assertions of discovery have admitted when standing before its beauty and power, felt admonished by her legend’s promise. That promise of unknown and unforeseeable consequences for any attempting to open and view the contents. Warnings of illness, mishaps, misfortune and the releasing of evil energies would be the reward thrust upon those curious persons who dare to open Pandora’s
Box. Thus, the contents have remained preserved and protected, until now. So how is it, they wonder, has Pandora’s Box emerged from her hiding and now sits in plain sight, her majestic lid upright and open? There is some speculation that with age, the lock released its grip, becoming loose and finally relinquishing its hold. Many believe after the eons of passing time, the box grew warped and uneven, resulting in the lid gradually separating from the bottom. I roll with laughter amid the constant news coverage speculating on who or what has achieved the grandest of tasks. What they find more confusing is that there are no viable explanations as to how the box seems to reposition itself at random, preventing any from actually viewing her contents. What wizarding madness is this, they ask? Their social media bombards them with claims of those who say they have indeed seen what’s inside Pandora’s Box. Yet, there are no substantial accounts as to why the one or ones, courageous enough in mind and body to locate, move then open Pandora’s Box, lacked that last bit of valor to look inside? Did they turn their heads in fear? Walk away without so much as a peek, out of respect? Hah! Unlikely, based upon what I’ve observed in human behavior. And if those claims of success are true, then why haven’t they suffered blindness, physical or emotional pain, or even death? Why are there no reports of great calamities or misfortunes as promised by her legend? It’s easy to reason they make claims to an untruth and have not, in reality, gazed upon the contents. Or, perhaps those who did find and open the box have indeed suffered misfortunes or worse and are simply not able to tell their stories. There are rumors they found, saw then in a moment’s gasp, dissipated into the ethers of the unknown. No one knows for certain. But I will tell you one thing for certain; now that Pandora’s Box is open, it can no longer be shut. Ever. I tremble with glee as I observe the spread of fear. I clap and dance to the music of their frantic discussions on how to manage the reclosing of Pandora’s Box. Government officials, the world over, are holding summits and making feeble mandates on how to protect the box while keeping the public a safe distance. The United States and her remaining allies have called in their military troops to close the box. And though less than willing, but trained to follow orders, none have even been able to even approach. One group of Troops declared they too experienced that invisible force preventing them from getting close enough to obey their orders to approach and close the box. Others, while being watched remotely, by commanders sitting a safe distance away in a bunker, were suddenly and completely overcome with a bout of vertigo,
falling to their knees, sick and vomiting just feet from where the box sits in her glory. I couldn’t help but smirk, as many religious groups and New Age sects took it upon themselves to assist in the task of approaching, opening then reporting on the contents. Of course none succeeded. Fools, they’re no match for me. Today I’ve added a dimension, that of scents. Familiar yet distasteful smells to wade through then sit heavily in the air. In the United States, they are awash in vapors foul and putrid; a conglomeration of sulfur, smoke and ash. In Europe the stench is a musky one, best described as belonging to the Stinking Corpse Lily. Scandinavia complains of the intrusion of rotting fish combined with sewage, into their nasal passages. And populations in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are sickened with the smell of blood. When traced to their origins, all scents lead back to Pandora’s Box. Yet, my eyes narrow and my hands twist and turn. Because there remain a few who will contradict the moaning and choking of the rest. Instead, they shall make declarations of breathing in more pleasing odors; rich, dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, that “new car smell,” they all relish. They’ll say they’re strangely satisfied by the unexplainable aroma of freshly baked bread, cinnamon or that morning cup of coffee scent emitting from the box. These pleasing olfactories will fill their noses and lift the corners of their mouths. What’s more, they’ll report certain feelings. The refreshing allure of crisp mountain water between their toes, the tickle of a light touch against their skin, a soft kiss, an embrace, an ocean breeze in their hair. For what no one knows or is aware of, what none can fathom, is that it is I, the invisible yet omnipresent Virus that has managed to bring forth Pandora’s Box. The treasure chest that held at bay for centuries those dark thoughts, and behaviors that have been bubbling and boiling just below the surface. Patiently waiting; waiting for the excuse to show themselves, for the permission to be free. I am the source that has successfully and so easily brought to the forefront those behaviors, utterances and beliefs held by so many. It is those very behaviors, utterances and beliefs that fueled my strength to resurrect the box. It is only when and if, the few increase and become the many, I will no longer be able to stand firm and hold Pandora’s Box in place, her lid erect and open. I watch them closely, hiding in plain sight and worried. For it is true; if and only if the human race learns how to affirm their lives every day and take deep pleasure in their existence, united as one, that death-worshippers and ill-doers can’t win. And if they can’t win, then as Pandora’s myth promises; Hope will remain.

HOPE SOUP RECIPE
Based on the classic Hoppin’ John Soup w/Black-eyed Peas Reported to ensure good luck and good fortune INGREDIENTS 6 slices thick bacon or bacon-substitute – chopped 1 ham hock if desired 4 celery stalks – diced 3 carrots – diced 1 medium yellow onion – diced 1 green bell pepper – seeds/ribs removed – diced 4 cloves garlic – minced 2 tsp fresh thyme – divided ¼ tsp cayenne pepper 6 cups Infused chicken or vegetable broth (I recommend using isolate to Infuse) 1 – 2 cups water (as needed) 4 cups fresh (soaked overnight) or canned black-eyed peas 2 Tbsp Canna-butter 1 ½ cups uncooked rice Salt, pepper to taste Fresh scallions – sliced for garnish PROCESS In a heavy soup pot, over medium-high heat, cook bacon until crisp. Remove from the pot and allow to drain on a paper towellined plate. Pour off half the bacon drippings, then to the same pot add Canna-butter, celery, carrot, onion and bell pepper until soft and fragrant. Stir in garlic, thyme and cayenne. Cook for another 5 minutes. Reduce heat to low adding broth, ham hock and black-eyed peas. Simmer soup for 30 minutes. Stir in rice, and bacon, adding water if needed. Season with salt and pepper to taste, cooking until rice is tender; about 20 minutes. Serve; garnishing with remaining thyme and scallions. Serves 6

INGREDIENTS 1 cup each; yellow cornmeal, all-purpose flour ¼ cup yellow cake mix 1 Tblsp baking powder 1 tsp salt ¼ tsp baking soda 2 cups buttermilk 2 eggs 1 cup Canna-Butter – divided honey cinnamon
PROCESS Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Place 10” cast iron in skillet to heat. Meanwhile, in large bowl whisk together first 6 ingredients. Merry Christmas, Nicolas. Here is a tale about a magical coffee shop. I hope that you enjoy it.
Digital `Sweetness Repetition is the key to ennui, Lisa told herself as she slowly rolled forward in the line for the takeout window at her local coffee shop. Nothing ever changed. Work was the same, her friends were kind but forgettable, and her car never seemed to go fast enough. First-world problems all the way. She tried to remember the last time she was hunted by some enormous Apex predator, like a lion or an emu, but nothing came to mind. Granted, animals who traditionally live on the savanna don’t do well in the desert, but anyways… Lisa prepared to give her order when the first new thing in forever happened. “Welcome to Grumpy Joe’s! What can I get you this morning?“ The voice. The voice was different! What kind of world is it when they change the people taking your order so suddenly? Lisa started to get upset, then realized that it was only a cup of coffee and maybe, just maybe, she should get a grip on herself and tell the new voice what she wanted to drink this morning. You see, Lisa was employed as a professional voiceover artist, and she knew a good voice when she heard it. Deep. Sonorous. No more than half-a-pack a day, which gave his voice a nice timber but didn’t make him sound like Busta Rhymes. The previous early-shift order-taker had a nice voice, if not a bit pinched and squeaky. Most likely a deviated septum, Lisa diagnosed from the depths of her voice coaching experience. “What can I get for you on this chilly December day, young lady?” It was the holiday season, and Lisa favored holidaythemed drinks. She just finished a long, protracted stretch of pumpkin anything, so she was desperate for a change. “I would like a chocolate mint latte, with no whipped. “ “OK, then, I have one chocolate mint latte with extra whipped cream“, purred the deep, comforting voice. She could almost hear him smiling. It’s too bad he seems to be deaf, she mused. She was a big fan of lactose, so there were no problems there. She just found whipped cream too sweet, and she felt

that the less hyper-sweetness she had to experience, the better. “You almost have it! Just no whipped cream. “She tried to verbally smile back but was unsure if she managed to succeed. Since when would she even care? “My dear, you are just going to have to trust me. Christmas whipped cream is special, and you certainly do not want to miss out on it. “ Ordinarily, Lisa would have dug her heels in and demanded that whipped cream be allowed nowhere near her latte, but it was getting late, she had a physics textbook that she was voicing waiting for her, and she liked this new voice. She couldn’t wait to get a look at him at the window. Maybe he was cute. Her hopes were SLAIN when she got to the window only to see the usual kid with the pierced eyebrow and the neck tattoo waiting to collect the money and shovel her her coffee. Oh, well. It was only after she exited the parking lot when she wondered how he knew that she was a young lady before she even opened her mouth. December flew by, as that month always seemed to do. There was definitely one thing that set this December apart from previous years. Lisa had always loved her morning latte, but this month had seen her enjoyment of latte turn into an almost full-scale addiction. But it wasn't just the coffee, nor was it the magical whipped cream. Grumpy's has always been a cool corner coffee shop, but things seemed to have picked up quite a bit over the last few weeks. As an example, it was 6 AM, and there were already 5 cars in line in front of her. A month ago, she would have been frustrated; now, she turned up her car radio and enjoyed some Mannheim Steamroller. She usually avoided Christmas carols like the plague, but this year she couldn't seem to get enough. Except that horrible Bruce Springsteen song where he is moaning about Santa Claus coming to town and all. Santa Claus. Seriously, Bruce? Billy Squire was just finishing telling her how Christmas was the time to say I love you when she finally rolled up to the speaker. She rolled down her window and heard “Good morning, Li! Merry Christmas! Did you finish narrating the physics textbook that you were working on?” “Good
morning, Steven,” she trilled back. “You were right, I was able to finish the assignment and collect that bonus! I owe it all to you!” Perhaps a little context is called for here. In the space of 3 weeks, Lisa had grown quite close to the disembodied voice whose face she had never seen. His name was Steven, and he made her feel happy. Given the everincreasing length of the line, she was clearly not the only one to seek some Steven on a daily basis. In 3 weeks, he had become a good friend in 2-minute increments. How was that even possible, she wondered? She shared every detail of her life with him, at least within reason. How could this be happening? He reminded her of somebody; she just couldn't figure out who. Arguably, her life was much better after having met her new friend. Work wasn't as torturous; her cat was nicer to her. Things that used to make her insanely aggravated no longer seemed to matter. She had gotten a taste of being happy, and she liked it. Based on the line of cars behind her waiting, she clearly was not alone. Maybe it was the whipped cream. This place must be a goldmine, she thought. She advanced to the window to collect her order. Grumpy Joe had very little reason to be grumpy these days. He had taken a big risk when he resigned his tenured position in the Artificial Intelligence department at the local University to buy a coffee shop, but the intersection of the two had proven profitable beyond his wildest dreams, and it was all thanks to his newest intake monitor, Steven. Everybody loved Steven! It was the first time that he received multiple phone calls complimenting him on hiring such a wonderful, caring person as Steven. Everybody loved Steven! Grumpy Joe loved Steven- it was hard not to. The fact that STEVEN (Self Tracking Environmental Virtual Effusive Node) was an artificial intelligence program did nothing to discourage his love of Steven! At the end of the day, Steven was a glorified database of all of the peculiarities and eccentricities of his customers. The program was able to store composite information and parrot it back to its customers, just like a real person. The more frequently customers interacted with Steven, the more personal the conversations were. Pay up, sucker. The holiday season was almost over, so the Grumpy one would have to reprogram Steven for the next holiday season, whatever that may be. Once you reach a certain age, however, Christmas lists start to be a bit redundant. My wife does not know what to buy for me, because if I want something I go and buy it. I do have a thing for making lists, so I got into the habit of making Christmas lists of stuff for famous people and institutions. Observe! TWTI: RICHTER them. I just call ‘em good weed. Hopper: We have so many memories together. Tell me one of your favorites. Richter: Rich, a lot of our memories involve drinkin’ and smokin’. When we first started touring we were both quite a bit younger. We’d be hittin’ joints, bongs, drinkin’ Captain and beer, smokin’ cigarettes, and you could tell what kind of night we had by how we sounded the next morning.
So this month I sat down with the homie Richter and hit record. When you’ve known someone for over twenty years, the conversation comes easy. Like always, we talked a lot about weed and music, good times in the past and better times to come in the future. Hopper: I’m so stoked we finally got together to do this. Let’s jump right in. We’ve smoked a shit ton of weed together over the years. What are you smokin’ on now? Richter: Right now I have some really good quality Green Crack. I’ve got some Banjo, some Sour Strawberry, I’ve got some Hashbar. Hopper: You’re smokin’ variety. That’s my favorite. Richter: I’m smokin’, what are they calling them these days? Not elite… Hopper: Exotics.

Hopper: I remember times you’d tell me to shut up because it hurts to hear your voice right now. Full gravel voice. Richter: Especially after six shows in a row. I mean, how many times have you had to save me? Perhaps we were in a gentlemen’s club maybe and Richter’s gettin’ a little wild and flippin’ tables or something like that. Hopper: More than once brother, more than once! So you’ve been spending a lot of time here in Oklahoma. Do you have any plans for the future here? Richter: I love the way that everything is unfolding with the weed scene out there. It’s exciting to see all the operations and different ways people are doing it. It’s definitely inviting, and it’s intriguing. I’m definitely looking at coming out there and getting involved in the scene that’s happening. The last time I was there, we went from a shop that was fully organically grown in soil… Hopper: Yeah that was Brandon at Majestic Craft Cannabis. He’s really taken organics to the next level.
Richter: Yeah, and then next day we’re runnin’ over to the science lab where everything’s full on ran with automation. Hopper: Yeah, everything at Phresh Harvest is hydro. It’s all clean, all high and tight. Richter: I’m just naturally drawn to growing weed, it’s just so interesting. To have it all happening in a close little space right there, just a couple of zip codes away. It’s a beautiful thing. Plus, we had another five or six states legalize over the last election. When we, me and you, started our friendship working together and everything else, there wasn’t even Prop 215 yet in California. If you smoked weed, you were gonna get a ticket or go to jail. Hopper: We were definitely on the forefront of things. We were rollin’ around in the bus with a pound at all times. Richter: Yeah, twelve people on a bus and everyone has at least an ounce always. Hopper: It was interesting that one time in Ohio, I took the bust for the bus. That was a head scratcher for me. Richter: That was a first for us. I mean we’d always had venues that got mad or told us not to smoke on stage cause there were cops in the building. We always had a way around that, and when vaporizers came out Pak would bust that out and people were like what the fuck is he doing? They were looking for a joint or a bong, and we were up there with a tube. They didn’t know what it was, thought it must be a prop. Hopper: In Ohio they literally asked me what it was. They didn’t know what a vaporizer was. That was back when it was a heat gun, like a hair dryer looking thing. Richter: The Vripmaster. I still have
mine, in working condition. Dude, I have like every vaporizer from the beginning. The Silver Surfer one, I have the box from Vapor Brothers. I have the chronological order of vaporizers as they came out. I probably have ten from the different stages. All the different custom ones people would make us. I could start a mini museum! Hopper: We unfortunately just recently lost our brother Saint. Will you say a few words about what he meant to you? Richter: He was obviously a big part of the beginning of Kottonmouth Kings. I mean the story is the story. We weren’t on too many full records together, but we did a lot of songs together and we hung out a lot in the beginning. We pretty much cut our teeth learning how to record and doing all the shows. When we first started out we didn’t have a full demo tape. We had a couple songs that we practiced to some beats that we had. We literally used to jump around D-Loc’s living room with TV remotes, holding them as the microphone, trying to get our shows down. We cut our teeth in the music industry together, as far as going in studios and learning how studios work. People may think that you just go in and record. They don’t understand all the different takes you gotta do, the mixing process, there’s so many different things. Then the shows, your stage presence, the way you interact with the crowd. Some people slide into it a little easier, but it’s not something anyone is born with. You have to learn how to be an entertainer. That part of our career we spent together. Throughout the years since then, our paths have crossed many times obviously. We’ve always had a mutual respect for each other and a friendship based on that. Hopper: What was the transition from KMK to Kingspade like? Richter: It was easier, because I’d known Loc longer. We were eight years old when we met, we rode bikes to school together. We played mini court on a six foot hoop, I’d come over on the weekend and help him mow the lawn so his Dad would let us go play. So there’s that familiarity that only comes from spending time with someone. When you’re around someone long enough, it’s something I can’t really put into words. You just know what’s coming up next. When you’re doing shows you know when you need to come in and do a part so the homeboy can catch a breath, or I really like this line he does so I’m gonna do it with him. Hopper: That’s the thing with you guys, it always seems effortless. It just flows, like you finished each other’s sentences. Richter: We’ve been doin’ it for coming up on over twenty years. Anything you do for twenty years, you’re gonna know it like the back of your hand. Hopper: Like you said also, you guys rode bikes together as kids. You go way back. It’s rad that you guys were kids together and now you’re adults. I mean, we’re getting to be old men now.
Hopper: Yeah I’ve got some years on you. I got a little youth outta you guys! So what’s KMK got coming up? Do you have any solo plans? Richter: Right now, we as in all SubNoize artists, are working on a SubNoize Soldiers record. We’re collabing with other artists on the label. Most of the artists on the label have known each other for many years. I literally just started writing a hook last night for me and Chucky Chuck and Obnoxious. So we’re gonna get that goin’ and I also have a project I started out in Oklahoma with your buddy, Smo. I gotta get out to Nashville and finish that one. Hopper: Anything for KMK? Richter: With the COVID situation we’re just getting through it in our own way. We had 2020 set up to be a really nice year. We had Japan locked in, we were supposed to go right before the Olympics. We had tours, shows lined up and all that. Then everyone started getting sick and that all got shut down, so we’re kinda in limbo. But hey, it’s a blessing in disguise. It’s given me time to head out to Oklahoma a couple times. Hopefully we’re on the backend of this COVID situation and hopefully by summertime next year we’ll be able to get out and start playing music for the masses again. Hopper: You gotta get back out here! Richter: I’m working on it. That’s the main plan, I’m just doing what I gotta do here to get that plan working. Hopper: Hell yeah! With COVID-19 surging, it’s looking like another lockdown is likely…but (at least for me personally) this time it won’t be as tough as it was in the spring. Now that it’s colder than a witch’s tit and gets dark at 4pm, hibernating with my vape and a big mug of Baileys-laced hot cocoa doesn’t sound so bad! Virus or no, when Daylight Savings kicks in I just want to make like a bear, hole up in a cave and sleep til March. But guess what? You don’t have to be a bear to hibernate in a cave anymore! That’s right – there are plenty of humans who live in caves, too. Even in the Mojave Desert, as I found out for myself earlier this year. For this story, we have to travel back through the mists of time to the B.C. era – that’s Before Covid, when hotels and Airbnb’s were all booked up for Valentine’s Day weekend. My squeeze at the time got a last-minute booking for his own place, which because of certain unique features was itself listed on Airbnb…and that meant we had to find alternate accommodations. Now I know it feels like a lifetime ago, but remember: Valentine’s Day 2020 not only fell on a Friday, but it was also a three-day weekend on account of Presidents’ Day, which meant it was an extra special big deal, which in turn meant that pretty much every hotel, motel and guest bedroom in the Southwest was booked solid! What to do?! Desperate, I checked Airbnb on the slim chance that there was SOMEthing still available – a shanty, a Tuff Shed in someone’s backyard, ANYTHING. And by some random miracle, I spotted a listing for a cave.
down at this trailer, and they would then come pick us up in their UTV. Having a Toyota 4Runner, I insisted on driving up myself, so the host came down to escort us to the actual cave. And what a cave it was! Come to find out, what we had booked was the guest suite in an actual cave home, blasted into the side of a rock outcropping by an industrious lifelong miner who had always wanted to live in a cave, and who had made his dream come true down in sunny Dolan Springs where land is relatively cheap, and the rock is perfect for excavating homes. This man had spent over 20 years blasting and refining his own multi-roomed cave, much of it with his wife and young children living there with him. The kids grew up roaming the beautiful Arizona desert while dad continued blasting, until finally, the cave was finished. Ironically, the family had all squeezed into a small warren of rooms off the kitchen while the rest of the cave was being blasted into shape, and by the time the entire house was finished, the kids had grown up and moved out. Now mom and dad were left with a cavernous expanse of empty rooms, and no one to fill them. So they turned to Airbnb. Enter me and my date! I didn’t realize it at the time of my booking, but we were the very first Airbnb guests to stay at the newly-christened Cave Inn – you can check their guestbook if you don’t believe me! Alas, there was a minor snafu upon check-in; because it was their very first booking, the hosts had gotten confused, and accidentally double-booked the guest suite for Saturday night. But rather than turn away a valued guest,
A CAVE!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes. Apparently, someone down in Dolan Springs, Arizona (just south of Lake Mead) had a cave house for rent. And it was available on Valentine’s Day weekend! Not only could I not believe my eyes, I couldn’t believe my luck, as I am JUST the kind of weirdo who thinks staying in a cave sounds like more fun than staying at the Four Seasons. So I went ahead and booked the cave for Saturday night. they offered up their own private master bedroom for us to sleep in!

The instructions in the confirmation email were intense: drive to Dolan Springs, then follow a dirt road off to the south to a certain address, which turned out to be an unassuming double-wide in a ramshackle rural neighborhood, definitely not a cave! I’d just started to suspect I’d been scammed, when the host texted me. Apparently, the actual cave was up an even rougher 4x4 road. So the hosts recommended their guests park
Now, you might think that’s kinda weird, but I ask you: what about any of this story so far ISN’T weird?! And besides, the couple running the Cave Inn were so freaking nice, it would have been churlish to refuse their offer.
So we bunked down in the master suite at the Cave Inn, which, I should note, is tastefully and thematically decorated in animal prints and safari décor, with touches of Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion in the form of colored lights and decorative skulls tucked in every nook and cranny (of which there are many). It’s a cave, for chrissake, with roughhewn rock walls pock-marked with all kinds of nooks and crannies! The floors are covered with colorful casino carpeting, and the doors are designed for maximum airflow, with openings at the top to ensure ventilation throughout (thanks to its thick rock walls, the cave stays a cool 72 degrees, year-round). The lights, TVs and appliances are 100% solar powered, and the fully-plumbed bathrooms (complete with rockwalled showers) use water from the onsite well. This is a cave where you really could ride out the Apocalypse! Speaking of the Apocalypse, our hosts had a pantry full of canned goods laid in, in the event of just such an inconvenience, and when my date and I announced our intentions to go out and grab a bite to eat, they offered to share what they had in their larders as the nearest restaurant was around 45 minutes away in Golden Valley, Arizona. Not wanting to intrude, and wanting a bit of local color, we insisted on going out. But after all was said and done, I have to concede: if you stay at the Cave Inn, it’s best to either eat dinner before you get there, or bring stuff to BBQ on the beautiful patio out back. It was a looonnng, bumpy drive to and from Golden Valley, and there are no streetlights in the neighborhood around the Cave! Luckily, we made our way back safely, and bedded down cozily for the night in our safari-printed bedding. And let me tell you, sleeping in a cave is like being in the womb! It was pitch dark and totally silent and felt very safe, like being cuddled in the bosom of the Earth. In the morning, our hosts had coffee and Danish waiting for us in the cave kitchen, and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast chatting with them about their life living in a cave in the Arizona desert. The wife had a friendly, nurturing mom vibe, while the man of the house resembled nothing so much as a biker version of one of the Seven Dwarves, a quiet twinkle in his eye visible above his whiskers. Great people! In fact, we hit it off so well that we ended up staying in touch and over the following months. When the wife checked in with us during the pandemic and I asked how the quarantine was treating her, she replied that their lives had changed very little. Maybe fewer Airbnb bookings, but overall, life in a cave during a pandemic is pretty much like life in a cave anytime!

We became such good buddies with the cave couple that we have a standing invitation to come back anytime, and I must admit, during the craziness of 2020, there have been more than a few occasions that I’ve considered taking them up on their offer. Fighting the Wrongs From the
War On Drugs >>>
The (failed) “War on Drugs” was a conservative response to the rebellious nature of yippies and anti-war activists in the 1960’s. The Nixon administration was strategic to tie yippies to weed and Black people to other drug substances. This war continued into the 80’s under President Reagan who was able to perpetuate Black people as heavy drug users to justify over policing of Black communities all throughout this nation. The vestiges of this failed war can still be seen in our communities to this day, despite a more socially acceptable stance towards the substances they sought to control.
As cannabis and other drug substances begin to find favorable public opinion (and friendly public policy makers), it’s absolutely imperative that we remember the communities that were dismantled by the criminalization of these drugs. Economic justice to these communities means: 1) expunging the records of former cannabis related offenders, 2) direct cash investment in communities of color and 3) lowering the barrier for entry to the industry (cannabis licensure in Nevada is upwards of one million dollars). CEIC is uniquely positioned to bring economic justice to our community.
As with most injustices in this country, the “War on Drugs” disproportionately impacted Black families and Black communities. Black men were torn from their families and heinously charged for low-level drug offenses in the name of making an example of them. Indeed, scores of research has been conducted and countless documentaries have been produced spotlighting how pervasive and commonplace this became throughout the 90’s. Fast forward to today, where: 1) Black people continue to be overrepresented in media as criminals and drug users, 2) Black people continue to be overpoliced and surveilled in their own communities and 3) Industry has figured out a way to monetize the same drugs that our community members were criminalized for.
CEIC is the sole organizing entity that is squarely focused in holding the cannabis industry accountable to communities of color in Nevada. Our work is anchored by three pillars: freedom, equity and opportunity. Freedom for our brethren that are formerly incarcerated for cannabis related offenses. Freedom means expungement and commutation of cannabis offenses so that our community members are able to fully and wholly participate in society. (On this front, we’ve made progress as state legislators have passed multiple pieces of legislation to right this wrong). Equity in our communities that were (and continue to be) underinvested in, dilapidated and disproportionately impacted by low-performing schools. Opportunity for those seeking to create a business for themselves in the thriving cannabis industry in a moment when the uncertainty of tomorrow is accelerating profits today.
It has been somewhat reassuring to hear elected leaders (former and current) express remorse for the criminalized approach in which they handled the influx of drug use over the decades. However, hindsight can hardly atone for the destruction, devastation and dilapidation that the failed war on drugs caused in numerous communities of color across the United States. Someone has to take on the urgent and important work of rebuilding the communities that were negatively affected by the racist drug policy of decades past. That’s where we fill the gap as CEIC. Cannabis Equity Inclusion Community (CEIC) was created to bring racial justice to communities that were negatively impacted by the racist drug policies at the national and local level. And since we know that racial justice is inextricably linked to economic justice, we anchor our organizing work in bringing said justice to the very communities that have, economically, powered this industry to its current and ongoing success.

A Day in the Life of ... Libby Cooper of Space Cowboy
Libby Cooper, Co-Founded Space Coyote in San Francisco, and in just 18 months the company became one of the top 20 pre-roll brands in California, quickly becoming the fourth highest infused pre-roll brand on the market, found in more than 300 dispensaries. Before founding Space Coyote, Cooper was Creative Director at Eaze, California’s largest retail platform. Cooper has built and launched multiple cannabis brands, including cannabis cup-winning products. Cumulatively, those brands she helped launch have sold more than five million in revenue in the first year of operations. But, her journey into the cannabis space and becoming one of the fastest growing woman-owned and operated cannabis companies really began as a young adult, and innately knowing the plant was beneficial.
Recreation or Medicine? The first time Cooper partook of cannabis was in High School, but she emphatically states that she does not condone smoking cannabis for teens. Ironically, though, she did feel its positive effects at this young age. “Though I smoked with a group of friends for recreational purposes, I felt a surprising amount of relief from the chronic stomach pains I had suffered from since my earliest childhood memories,” she shared. Her parents would tell her stories years later of her being a picky eater, often regurgitating her food. This, she said, transformed her into a tiny kid, with a perennial upset stomach with pain. “When I smoked weed for those first few times as a teen, I suddenly had a huge appetite and the strength to play harder when she went into team sports. It wasn’t until the end of high school that she was diagnosed with Celiac Disease.

“I fondly called it the ‘OG gluten-free diet,” she laughed. “All dots connected in that moment. The relief I felt from cannabis, along with the benefits that didn’t hinder my athletics, but enhanced them. I actually went on to be a Division 1 Track and Field athlete in college, using cannabis throughout my sports career,

even though it was not allowed at the time and we were always threatened with random drug tests.” This writer has interviewed numerous adults who first began using cannabis in adolescents and as teenagers, because it worked for them. Many with undiagnosed disorders on the Spectrum, ADD or ADHD, and/or myriad ailments where the plant helped more than pharmaceuticals at a young age. Why then did she add the fine print at the beginning of her story - that kids should not partake? Because of the stigma, because of the rhetoric, “What about the children?” Well, this writer has news for everyone, the kids are alright, and if it works for them at a young age, they probably need it in some way. The biggest challenge Cooper faced was in finding her protocols and dosing with cannabis, in light of the failed war on drugs and the lack of educational information on the plant. When she hit 25, she was able to explore the optimization of her diet and lifestyle, adding Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medicine, helping to guide her through, what she calls the “seasons and time in your life, and the factors that put your health in different directions throughout the days, weeks, and years. “Eating the proper food, including eating seasonally and locally, with correct food combining, completely changed my life,” she added. “On top of this, following Ayurveda I nearly cut out all packaged and processed foods. Keeping cannabis as both my medicine and my recreational vic completely transformed my body. It didn’t happen overnight, but now, in my late 20s, I’m the strongest and healthiest I’ve ever been.”
Feeding the Muse Space Coyote offers up a variety of smoking options, including joints made with hash, live resin, and non-psychoactive THCA. Its Poolside Hybrid Hash 5-Pack, is the latest product collaboration with Poolside, a daytime disco band from Los Angeles. The song to match the vibe, I Feel High, was written by Poolside’s leader, Jeffrey Paradise, and Ben Browning from Cut Copy, recorded in Los Angeles. The song was already written and and
included on Poolside’s new album, Low Season, released in February, 2020, when the Space Coyote team created the perfect pre-rolls for seshing to the song. As a company, Cooper said that Space Coyote explores the “psychedelic side of weed,” focusing on a potent smoke, no matter if the partaker is a patient or is looking to open their third eye and find its muse. Paradise said he had always wanted his music to match up with a certain type of high, and conveyed this to Cooper and team. The Poolside Hybrid Hash 5-Pack was the outcome. “We told the Space Coyote team that we’d like the high to compliment a daytime hang session, spent lounging by a pool, listening to mellow music - which is what I always want my music to do,” Paradise said. Each pre-roll in the Poolside 5-Pack’s reusable tin is loaded with a half a gram of infused cannabis, blending Sour Cookies Hash from Nasha Extracts with MAC flower from Sticky Fields. Also an artist, Cooper worked with Paradise in creating the artwork for the pack. Paradise comments on the Space Coyote’s website describing the product, “Only one thing is better than chilling out listening to groovy music, and that’s chilling out listening to groovy music while smoking a great joint,” he penned. “I’ve always heard that people like to listen to Poolside music when they smoke - now they can smoke with Poolside when they smoke!”
Daily Dose, bypassing cyberland in the a.m. Cooper said there’s much power in listening to your body’s needs and knowing that you can and will heal. “My dosing schedule varies based on how I’m feeling,” she explained. I’m not waking and baking unless it’s Thursday, when I livestream on Facebook and Instagram with my cofounder, Scott Sundvor to about 400,000 viewers.” If she doesn’t need to medicate in the morning, she ignores social media and focuses on her morning routine, then drives straight to work.
Ingesting regularly keeps symptoms at bay, allowing Cooper to enjoy her partaking, without the urgency of needing to medicate for a flare-up. It’s prevention at its finest. “When my tummy is bad I’ll typically eat an edible or take some tincture in the late evening, after dinner to soothe my stomach for sleep,” she said. “The most common time of day for me personally to experience pain is immediately upon waking up, so by taking a medible or tincture the night before, I can actually lesson and often stop the discomfort from happening at all.” A favorite mode of partaking is with infused joints at the end of her day. “I unwind with a nice infused joint at the end of the day, but my most favorite time to get lifted is listening to live music,” she said. “During COVID, times have certainly changed, but I love to recreate the concert feel at home with big speakers on loud, and a joint in my mouth. I play psychedelic rock and dance around the living room with the lights on low.” Cooper truly believes in smokable, potent products, affirming that women can be stoners and being a stoner is celebratory. “There’s nothing quite like releasing stress through movement - and the use of cannabis can aid you in fully letting go of inhibitions,” she concluded, knowingly. This is a little recipe that anyone can make easily at home. Need a quick stoner gift or heading to a Christmas party? Look no further because this recipe is popping! Literally! So let's get right to it and make something unique. Merry Christmas Mom, this one's for you!!
Christmas Cherry Bombs
Ingredients 1 box of Cherry Fruit Roll-ups 1 package of Swedish Fish (Infused) or your favorite infused gummies! 4 packs of Cherry Pop Rocks 2.5 cups of Rice Crispy Cereal 1 10 oz. package of small marshmallows 1 ½ sticks of infused cannabutter Instructions Firstly let's get started on our Rice Crispy Cereal sheets. That's right, this is a Christmas edition of the First THC infused dessert sushi roll in America! Just with a couple changes to make it "Pop"! Talk about finishing up this year with a bang. Another historical CannaBushi roll to celebrate my 1 year anniversary in a magazine. I'm so very thankful and grateful. Grab a big enough pot to make your treats. Turn your stove to medium-high and drop that butter in. It makes it quicker to melt if you cut the butter into smaller pieces. Open up your bag of marshmallows and dump in with your heated butter. The marshmallows will turn a beautiful green as you continue to mix it thoroughly with the infused butter. This should be around 12-15 minutes depending upon how your stove top works. Be patient and don't burn this.

At this point the butter and marshmallows should be melted. Go ahead and grab your measured cups of Rice Crispy Cereal. Mix until cereal is fully covered.
Take a very sharp knife and cut into small slices. Use my photo as a reference. There you have it!! You just made an infused treat, good enough to give you a bang for your buck!!!
Make sure you have a butter or oil sprayed sheet pan ready and while your mixture is hot, pour into the baking sheet.

Spread out the mixture enough to create a flat sheet around a ¼" to ⅜" thickness. Use a sheet of plastic wrap on top of the hot mixture to help spread it evenly. Put aside to cool. Once the treats have cooled down. Cut into 4"×7" rectangles. Or just have a Fruit Roll-Up open and unrolled for your dimensions. *This is where it gets interesting.... Now that we are prepared for putting together our Cherry Bombs, place a piece of plastic wrap on a cutting board, then lay your sheet of Fruit Roll-Up on top. There's a layer of plastic wrap on the Fruit Roll-Up and if you are comfortable with using that, run it. Take one of your sheets of Infused Rice Crispy and place it on the Fruit Roll-Up. Then open up a package of Pop Rocks. Pour enough across the sheet to have a small line of Pop Rocks. The more the better!! Next, take the gummies and place in a line across the sheet on top of the Pop Rocks. Take your thumb and place it under the sheet. Bring it up and over and encapsulate all materials. Make sure to keep tightly rolled until the Fruit Roll-Up meets the other side of itself. If you have a Makisu or bamboo rolling mat it can make this faster. Otherwise just keep it tight and make sure it is all sealed together.

COOKING WITH CANNABIS Holiday Edition

This month we are going to utilize our three different infusions we have gone over and make a killer Gingerbread House! Let’s take the ride together as we remake an old classic and infuse the entire thing. Before we get started, there are a few reminders about this project. First off, this will cover the general making of the gingerbread, the design is completely up to you. Consult resources like the internet and your imagination to cut and assemble your dream holiday home. Secondly, it will depend on how strong you have made your individual infusions as to how strong this overall project will be. I tend to make rather strong infusions, so I will use less infusion per product. Lastly, if you try everything along the way, your house likely will not get built, so please, moderate yourself, this is going to be one delicious activity. Our first step is to get the gingerbread made. It is important to do this a day or two ahead of time, as you want the formed gingerbread to have enough time to set and harden pre-construction. In this recipe, I substituted 3 tablespoons of butter with 3 tablespoons of cannabutter. Utilizing my 1:1 ratio cannabutter recipe, I find 3 tablespoons to be the right amount without getting to be too potent. A couple of things to remember- make sure to have extra flour to dust with,
also, have plenty of parchment and plastic film available.
Gingerbread Dough
Ingredients 3 cups all-purpose flour leveled 1/4 t baking soda 2 t ground ginger 2 t ground cinnamon 1/2 t ground allspice 1/4 t salt 6 T unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 3 T cannabutter, softened to room temperature 3/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar 1 large egg, at room temperature 1/2 cup dark molasses 2 Tablespoons water Instructions Whisk the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, and salt together in a large bowl. Set aside. In a large bowl using a hand-held mixer or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the butter and brown sugar together on medium speed until completely smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Beat in the egg, molasses, and water on high speed. Scrape down the sides and up the bottom of the bowl and beat again as needed to combine. On low speed, slowly mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until combined. Cookie dough will be very thick. Divide cookie dough in half, flatten into discs (think medium pancakes) and wrap each tightly in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours or up to 3 days. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Cut into shapes: Remove each disc
from the refrigerator and roll each out in between two pieces of parchment paper. Gingerbread cookie dough will stick to your counter no matter how much you flour it. Parchment is best. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. You want thick pieces for your gingerbread house. Lightly flour the underside of gingerbread house template shapes. (The dough is sticky and the paper may stick to it otherwise). Using a pizza cutter or small knife, carefully cut the dough into the shapes you have researched. You will need multiple of each shape. Re-roll dough scraps so you have enough dough for the whole house. Carefully arrange gingerbread house shapes onto prepared baking sheets, about 3 inches apart. If they lost some of their shape transferring to the baking sheet, straighten out the edges. Bake house pieces for about 18-20 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Remove from the oven and allow shapes to cool completely on the baking sheets or on the counter. A flat surface is KEY for cooling– the gingerbread house edges very slightly curl up otherwise. Cooled gingerbread house pieces can be made up to 1 week in advance, cover tightly and store at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Now that the gingerbread has been made, it is time to make our icing. For this project, we are going to go beyond the normal Royal Icing and make some amazing crusting buttercream. This buttercream will set nicely, for a strong hold as well as pack a canna punch! In this recipe, I utilize my 3:1 canna coconut oil infusion. I simply replace ¼ cup of shortening with ¼ cup canna coconut oil. Depending on your infusion availability, it is possible to make a small batch of this buttercream that is infused for you most prominent parts. Make a second uninfused batch for things like your wall joints and general construction.
Crusting Buttercream
Ingredients 1/2 cup shortening, at room temperature
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 4 cups confectioners’ sugar 2 T milk 1/4 t pure vanilla extract 1/8 t salt Instructions Buttercream can be prepared up to 1 day in advance- cover tightly and store in the refrigerator overnight. Bring to room temperature before piping/decorating. With a handheld or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the shortening and butter together on medium speed until creamy, about 2 minutes. Add confectioners’ sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Beat on low speed for 30 seconds, then increase to high speed and beat for 3 full minutes. Frosting will be very thick, which is what you want. If much too thick, add another splash of milk. Add a pinch of salt if frosting is too sweet. It is time to decorate! Now that we have our foundation and icing done, let’s make some fun and delicious decorations. Without getting too crazy making hard candy, let's use a life hack instead. The most important component of this step is the candy molds. These are widely available on Amazon or your local hobby store. Find festive candy molds that represent your holiday style. Next, I like to use Jolly Ranchers and Candy Canes. Both items melt down easy and come back hard really well. Depending on your inventory of tincture, you can infuse a few or all of your decorations! Follow these few simple steps and you will have some amazing infused candy decorations.
Hard Candies
Ingredients 10 Jolly Ranchers or Candy Canes (or whatever you desire) Bottle of THC tincture Instructions Unwrap hard candies and place in double boiler. Allow the candies to melt, gently stir. Add THC tincture. Carefully spoon mixture into molds. Allow to cool several hours You now have the components to make the baddest infused gingerbread house ever! Be careful while you are making these individual components, in this project you will have utilized three different infusions. Make sure you do not overindulge before you assemble. Your sobriety level will dictate the end result. Have fun with this and be safe. Happy Holidays!!
