VCM PATIENTS FIRST Summer is quickly approaching and recreational dispensaries are gearing up to open next month. Hopefully, the new focus on recreational does not leave our medical patients in the dust. Legislators are already dead set on removing the right to grow for patients, and many fear that removal of the medical program entirely is the next step. There are a multitude of extremely ill medical patients that have always grown their own plants, these are not the patients that are frequenting the medical dispensaries so why not leave them alone. Let them grow their own medicine and retain the ability to utilize the whole plant. The medical program needs to stay in place and the money that dispensaries bring in from recreational users needs to offset the cost of medical cannabis products for patients. Vegas Cannabis Magazine was created by patients, for patients. Our focus has and always will be our local, medical cannabis patients. Over time, we have added fun and interesting features to the magazine in order to keep it fresh and relevant for our readers. We will never lose sight of why we started this project which is why we remain accessible to readers and open to new ideas that you may have. Feel free to shoot us an email or give us a call. With recreational use, we must consider whether or not our dispensaries are prepared. Will Nevada run out of inventory? Will medical patients be unable to obtain their medicine? This month, Josh Ranck looks at the statistics and asks those very same questions. Additionally, attorney Karena K. Dunn reviews the Nevada DUI laws which pertain to all cannabis users. And, in his rant this month, our very own Rob Ruckus speaks to the cultivators in hopes of also protecting our patients. As always, we have included a few interviews with some amazing local artists. This issue also includes a pictorial feature of the one and only, DoobieDuck whose male plant photos, fun dioramas and awesome hummingbird shots have been featured all over the world. Happy Father’s Day to all of the awesome fathers out there. I hope you all enjoy this issue.

LAB TESTING

California’s Medical Cannabis Regulation & Safety Act (MCRSA)

T 24

he California Bureau of Marijuana Control released the long-awaited proposed text of regulations for medical cannabis testing laboratories last week. The proposed California medical cannabis testing regulations surpass the previously perceived stringent cannabis testing

regulations in place in Nevada and Oregon. The regulations’ thoroughness is the result of two years of extensive work by three State agencies. There is a digestible, yet dense 46-pg abridged version and a more reasoned 294-page document that contains much more than testing lab regulations. This document also contains proposed regulations for other cannabis businesses and the rules for their operation and what reaches the dispensary shelves. Although local municipalities could decide on further rules.

KILLE PACKAGING DESIGN Patients buy it for the design, and love it for what’s inside!

Altogether, it is evident that the State of California aims to reign in the medical cannabis industry with patient safety foremost in their deliberations. Significant effort was made to define terms and provide impressive detail across all topics from how an accredited testing lab should perform its internal quality control (QC) program to what type of container and cold storage conditions should be used to transport samples to the lab. I was appeased to read that test results are to be presented in terms of dry weight, something we were never successful in adopting in the State of Nevada. Homogeneity testing will also be required. There is a lot of superb guidance in the proposed medical cannabis regulations especially for sampling, method validation, quality management and the QC requirements that laboratories will need to institute. However, if the proposed regulations advance, there will be very real challenges ahead for California medical cannabis testing labs in terms of documentation requirements under ISO17025 accreditation, expanded testing methods and adulterant lists to be monitored. In addition, a new breakout of action limits based on the cannabis product category for solvents, pesticides and heavy metals. The categories vary by adulterant, but in general there is a distinction made between products to be inhaled versus eaten or transdermal. Challenges will also exist for cannabis growers and producers who will have a substantially higher adulterant-free bar to clear their flower and products through to the dispensary. More of their products will be diverted to testing with mandatory 0.5% per batch with sample duplicates also required at time of sampling. Yet there is more to come as both Nevada and California are in the final throes of settling on temporary regulations for recreational cannabis, including the pass/fail test criteria. While the similarities between medical and retail are obvious, the same safety concerns should exist for patients as well as for consumer public health. Exacting the same stringent medical marijuana testing requirements onto the retail market appears to be the only option.

Grow your own

Let’s Hear it for the Boys THE ROLE OF THE MALE PLANT BY ROBYN PIERCE, HORTICULTURE DEPT, OAKSTERDAM UNIVERSITY

annabis flowers are female, a fact often lost in this male dominated industry. It is a dioecious plant which means that male and female flowers are not produced on each plant but on one or the other. It is like humans in this regard. This trait allows us to enjoy the sinsemilla flowers because we can keep males away from them before they pollinate the females and produce seeds. If cannabis was monoecious and both male and female flowers appeared on the same plant, it would be difficult or impossible to prevent seeds from growing. The closest thing we might be able to achieve would be something like the seedless watermelon which isn’t truly seedless. In that situation diploid and tetraploid varieties are bred together to make a triploid watermelon, which is basically sterile and not capable of forming any seeds except very rarely. We don’t see male cannabis plants very much because at present they are only useful for breeding and will likely remain that way for a long time. While they can be ingested like the female plant, it is not recommended, especially for smoking due to the fact that they produce pollen that no one wants in their lungs (actual pollen, not kief, which was sometimes referred to as pollen the past). When a male is identified, it is usually a disappointing event for the grower who germinated seeds

looking for females. Males often grow the tallest and seem to have the most vigor, but unless you intend to breed new varieties or make seeds, you will have to get males as far away from the garden and as soon as possible or risk an accidental pollination and several to hundreds of seeds. Why are a few random seeds not a great thing? The short answer is, at present, bag appeal and THC content still determine end-user demand. Consistency is close behind that. Males introduce new genes and traits that in most cases probably contribute to the overall health of the plant and the resulting overall quality of its finished product, but that may not be consistent in either THC/CBD ratios, smell, or appearance. When these factors are not as important, a few seeds can be a great thing, especially for those gardeners who find themselves in parts of the world where decent cannabis seeds can be hard to come across. However, for better or worse just a few seeds are unlikely to have been created by pollen released from a true male but rather from a hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodite flowers prove that male plants are even somewhat dispensable to female plants, at least for a generation or two, although females would prefer to have males present as soon as they began producing stigmas. During late flowering, females often produce these hermaphrodite male flowers in a last minute attempt to produce seeds so their genes can be preserved for another generation where they might be able to be

pollinated by a true male. Plants are not unique in this ability; it has recently been discovered that female sharks, as well as other female animals like frogs, can produce offspring without a male. It is the last strategy but the alternative is an end to that unique genome. Reproducing asexually like this seems to work for a period of time in the wild but won’t allow the plant to adapt to its environment over longer periods of time. Some varieties, like the ever popular Girl Scout Cookies seem to prefer this method of reproduction, likely making it one of the true hermaphrodites. Most other varieties will only produce these hermaphroditic flowers when they encounter serious stress. This is one way that feminized seeds are produced and underscores a very important fact which would seem obvious by now: clone-only varieties like Sour Diesel, Grandaddy Purple and others are only female. There is no true Sour Diesel male to pollinate a female and create stable male and female seeds. There are the hermaphrodite male flowers that the female has produced, but the resulting seeds will be all female. A male is required for a female to produce male seeds. As humans, we are each unique genomes and there is no way to reproduce another exact copy of ourselves except by cloning. For obvious ethical reasons this has not been done, although there are claims to the contrary. Commercial farm animals like cattle are now often produced

this way for the same reasons that we clone cannabis plants. Yet, preserving a genome beyond its natural life cycle has effects that are still not well understood and are undesirable. Issues such as reduced vigor and lower production of desirable traits are very common problems with older clones. For this reason, sexual reproduction with male pollen is the most sustainable method to preserve desirable genetics over long periods of time and this requires a male. The resulting seeds will not be exact replicas, but over time and with some basic breeding principles, it should be possible to isolate some of the most elusive and desirable traits into stable breeding seed stock. Even as more and more people are breeding, do not count on seeing many male plants around. They’ll still have to be contained so their pollen doesn't become airborne and pollinate other flowers. It seems like they will eventually be utilized more and should also begin to have a larger role in the creation of new varieties as different states and countries implement different medical and recreational programs, making it easier for more people to work with cannabis in general. In conclusion, please remember, male plants play an increasingly important role in this rapidly developing industry and are not something to be afraid of but a resource that we may need to start leaning on sooner than we think.

VEGAS CANNABISMAG.COM

BY KARENA K. DUNN, ESQ.

DRIVERS BEWARE Whether you’re a medical marijuana patient or choose to regularly enjoy marijuana recreationally, chances are that every time you drive, you are breaking the law. Driving under the influence laws do not require you to be “under the influence”. If you are found to have 2 nanograms of THC or 5 nanograms of marijuana metabolite in your blood, you can be convicted of DUI. Although THC leaves a person’s system relatively quickly, marijuana metabolite can remain in your body for weeks, especially in regular users.

32

a person should wait to drive at least 3 hours after using marijuana, yet others say 10 hours. The amount of marijuana used and percentage of THC can greatly affect the length and degree of impairment, in addition to the person’s tolerance.

What should a regular marijuana user do? Obviously, the best advice to a regular user is to simply not drive. Unfortunately, not many people have this as an option, especially in Nevada. Realistically, most regular marijuana users drive daily. With this being reality, it is important for all marijuana users to understand not only the laws, but also their rights.

Some practical tips for drivers who use marijuana include, never smoke or use marijuana in your vehicle, never carry marijuana or marijuana paraphernalia in your vehicle, and when driving, don’t wear the same clothing you wore when you smoked marijuana. These three tips are directly related to the distinct, and many times, pungent odor of raw and burnt marijuana. The single most common reason that police officers conduct investigations for marijuana DUIs is the odor. Once a police officer notices the odor of raw or burnt marijuana during a traffic stop, the odds are very high that a DUI investigation will follow.

Despite the marijuana metabolite issue, every marijuana user needs to do everything possible to ensure they never drive while impaired by marijuana. Unfortunately, there is no steadfast rule on how long you need to wait to drive after using marijuana, to ensure you are not driving while still impaired. Currently, due to the lack of reliable scientific testing, even experts vary greatly on how long a person, who has used marijuana, needs to wait before driving. Some say

Should a driver find themselves at a traffic stop that seems to be turning into a DUI investigation, what are their rights? In the State of Nevada, a driver is required to provide a police officer with their driver’s license, proof of registration and proof of insurance. Should the police officer continue to ask additional questions involving use or possession of marijuana, a driver is not required to answer those questions. A person has the right to politely decline to answer any further questions. If a

police officer asks a driver to get out of the vehicle, the driver is required to comply with that request. If the officer asks the driver to perform field sobriety tests, a driver has the right to politely decline to participate in any field sobriety tests. If the police officer asks to just “check your eyes”, a driver has the right to politely decline. This “checking of the eyes” is actually a part of the field sobriety testing, and drivers have no legal requirement to participate in these tests. These roadside tests are utilized by police officers as a tool to investigate impaired drivers. Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, commonly referred to as “FSTs”, were developed for detecting drivers impaired by alcohol, specifically. Many studies were done to “standardize” these tests to aid officers investigating alcohol DUIs; however, law enforcement has expanded these tests and use them in drug DUI investigations. One of the problems with this expansion is that no studies have been done to determine the reliability of these tests in detecting marijuana impairment. Police Officers are looking for “clues of impairment” from the moment the driver comes to the officer’s attention, whether the vehicle is speeding, weaving, running a red light, etc. Once the officer contacts the driver, the officer is looking for all types of “clues”, such as red, watery eyes, slurred speech, droopy eyelids, lethargic movements, eyelid or body tremors, difficulty concentrating, and as mentioned earlier, odor of marijuana. Based on the officer’s observations, the officer may ask the driver if they have smoked marijuana, when and how much, and if there is any marijuana in the vehicle. Although it is legal to possess certain amounts of marijuana, admitting there is marijuana in the vehicle will most likely lead to a DUI investigation. Again, the driver is not required to answer any questions beyond license, registration and insurance. If the officer believes they have probable cause to arrest the driver, the officer will ask the driver to submit to a blood test. The driver can refuse to consent to the blood test; however, unlike refusing to do to the FSTs, if a driver refuses the blood test, DMV will revoke the driver’s license for 1 year. If the driver refuses, the officer can apply for a search warrant and if the judge grants the search warrant, the driver will be forced to do a blood test, and the driver will still lose their license for one year. Bottomline, regular marijuana users need to be aware of the DUI laws, and understand that as the law stands today in Nevada, you do not need to be impaired to be convicted of a DUI. Understanding the laws, you also need to understand your rights. In next month’s article, we will provide a legislative update. The Nevada Legislature 2017 session will be complete, and we will discuss all the new laws that have been passed affecting the marijuana.

Karena K. Dunn is a Criminal Defense Attorney who works with her Father at Larry K. Dunn & Associates. Karena and Larry defend clients in over 35 Courts across Nevada. Although they handle all criminal cases, the vast majority of their cases are DUIs (both alcohol & drug DUIs) & drug offenses.

I don’t want to cause any panic, but let’s look at some numbers.

evada has approximately 2.9 million residents. Of those residents, 27,953 hold medical marijuana identification cards. That’s almost ten people-per-thousand who have medical access to cannabis. To be honest, I thought this number would be larger. In November 2016, 1.1 million Nevadans turned out to vote on Question 2, which allows for recreational cannabis sales. Of those 1.1 million voters, 602,400 of them cast for the legislative initiative. To be honest, I also thought this number would be larger. These are more than six-hundred thousand assumed customers living in the state. Last year, 42,936,109 tourists visited Las Vegas. As of August 2016, one-in-eight Americans claim that they use marijuana. That’s 13% of the United States’ population … or 5,581,694 tourists who will descend on Las Vegas’ dispensaries like a pack of slavering hyenas.

At a glance:

27,952 MMJ patients vs. 6,184,094 potential rec users (tourists + residents who voted yes on Question 2). That enormous potential customer base will be hard for businesses to ignore.

34

And what happens July 1st, when recreational sales start? If we divide the 5,581,694 potential annual cannabis tourists by 12 months, that’s 725,620 recreational purchasers just in July. Don’t forget about the 602,400 people who voted yes on Question 2, the group of assumed local purchasers.

Projections for July:

The same 27,952 MMJ patients will be up against 1,328,020 possible recreational customers. The question on every patient’s mind: Will there be enough medicine to go around?

The answer isn’t clearly available. Some dispensaries are in a better position than others, especially those with the ability to produce their own stock. Joseph, store manager at Silver Sage Wellness: “We've always been patient-focused, and that won't change just because we also sell to rec users. We’re taking the initiative and putting steps in place to provide the best patient experience possible. We’re fortunate to have a cultivation license and are confident we’ll be able to meet our patients’ needs as well as our recreational users’ needs.”

Matt Gardiner, VP of Shango Las Vegas, has been mulling over the problem of a potential cannabis shortage: “Las Vegas is like nothing else. Colorado, Washington, and other rec states are experiencing an increase in canna-tourism, but Vegas is already one of the most visited cities in the world. We just don’t know what to expect. Things are moving so quickly now that it’s inevitable that some places will run short on product.” Inevitably bringing us back to the primary concern medical marijuana patients have, that they’ll suffer from a rec-driven shortage. Conversations I’ve had with other industry professionals reflect Gardiner and Joseph’s sentiments, particularly when it comes to patient services. Expect dispensaries to cater to their medical patients to the best of their ability but don't expect them to sit on of their ability, but don’t expect them to

sit on product for medical patients. This definitely applies to specialty products like edibles, extracts, and topicals, which are on the rise among all users. Some patients can’t or don’t smoke flowers, and these specialty products are their only treatment option. Gardiner is also making plans to ensure patient services aren’t interrupted: “Rec exists because of what was laid out by medical patients. We at Shango will do everything we can to make sure our medical patients get the products they need.” While more Nevada cultivation operations are on the way, the questions on everyone’s mind are: Have the limited number of growers produced enough crop for recreational rollout? And, do they have enough in pre-production to sustain the state going forward? It’s impossible to answer this question right now. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens come July 1st. Although, looking at other recreational states as a guide, medical marijuana patients are in danger of losing out to recreational users, and dispensaries are fueling this problem. Oregon recently divided dispensary oversight between two separate organizations. Medical cannabis is overseen by the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), while the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (OLCC) oversees recreational cannabis. Dispensaries can hold a license by one or the other agency, but not both in the same location. Larger dispensary chains can hold both licenses and operate individual sites respectively, but single-location businesses are forced to choose between selling medical or recreational cannabis. Guess which one they’re choosing?

As it stands now, Nevada has no such restrictions and dispensaries can sell recreational and medical cannabis in the same location. But Nevada has no experience in recreational sales, and could very well turn to other state’s examples of regulation and oversight. Especially with the confusion over who will be the official cannabis distributors in Nevada. The job was offered to currently licensed liquor distributors, who temporarily passed on the invitation. Stephanie Siverston, spokesperson for the Department of Taxation and CFO at Lee’s Discount Liquor: "We haven't picked a side one way or the other. We're waiting to get some guidance and information from the state and everyone involved in it to find out how it's going to be structured. We're interested in learning more about it." In other words, we’ll wait a year or so and then do what other states have done. It seems nobody knows what to do right now and everyone is scared of making a mistake, so they do nothing. Much of this fear comes from the fact that cannabis is still federally illegal, making support industry professionals nervous. The whole cannabis industry is watching Las Vegas right now. There’s never been another rec rollout with the tourist potential our city offers. One thing’s for sure, July 1st will see long lines pouring out of every dispensary across the city. It’ll make the local news. It’ll make the national news. It’ll go viral. Things might get a little hectic over this summer, but everything will be fine once Nevada cannabusinesses hit their stride. If you’re a medical marijuana patient worried about a cannabis shortage, check out these helpful tips on how you can protect yourself.

1:As Buy in quantity. a medical patient, you can purchase up to 2.5oz. of cannabis every two weeks (or the equivalent in edibles/extracts). If you think you may be affected by a medicine shortage during recreational rollout, stock up now.

2: Reserve your order online. After July 1, you can expect dispensaries to be much busier with

recreational purchasers. Beat the rush by ordering online. As a patient, you can have your medicine delivered, thereby avoiding the crowds.

3: Get your preferred products now. If there’s a particular strain or delivery system that treats your

symptoms best, stock up on that product before July 1. Stocking up is especially applicable if you use tinctures, edibles, or extracts. Expect for these specialty products to sell out quickly (specialty meaning anything other than flower.)

4: Make friends with your budtender. Introduce yourself to your budtenders, who are a great source of information and can tell you about current and future product stock.

5: Check the menus first. Especially if you’re looking for a particular product or strain.

Dispensaries use online services to let their customers know what’s currently in stock. Checking menus before going to a dispensary will save you time and frustration.

MARIJUANA

BUSINESS INSURANCE

YES IT’S TRUE, YOU CAN INSURE YOUR MARIJUANA BUSINESS

Y

By: Dale A. Diskant, Corinthian Capital

36

ou paid an attorney to help you start your business. You need an accountant to take care of your taxes. But over the long haul the one who is going to protect your business, the building, equipment, your income and now your actual product is your insurance broker. Most companies in the United States have an Insurance broker, and sometimes two. One for Property Casualty and one for Life & Health. Here at Corinthian Capital we do both. Actually, insurance for the marijuana Industry has been around for over ten years and the carriers are very large, “A” rated insurance companies.

You may be wondering who we can insure. The list is quite long and includes: Indoor and outdoor cultivators, processors/harvesters, wholesaler/distributors, business-tobusiness transportation, franchisors, dispensaries/retailers, manufacturers of both cannabis and non-cannabis products, wholesale distributors/brokers, laboratories, property management, landlord/building owners, tobacco retail stores, retail/wholesale garden and hydroponic stores, pot doctors (standard malpractice only) and lawyers (same thing, standard E&O policies do not cover pot advisement), pot universities, consulting firms and security companies.

Marijuana business insurance, like the marijuana industry itself is evolving. Insurance policies insuring a new risk, at first, were not the greatest. They were often overpriced and not covering much because the insurance companies had no risk experience. Insurance companies are statistical analysis companies. They analyze information to determine a cost for their insurance coverage. This process is referred to as “underwriting.” To understand insurance you need to look at one of the first types of insurance. It goes back to the “Jack Sparrow days” with first ships carrying cargo. They used to carry a lot of fertilizer and under the right conditions the ships would blow up. So, the shippers got together and decided to each put a small amount of funds in an account after every voyage, and if their ship blew up they would draw from the account to recover their losses. Simply, it’s a large number of people putting a small amount of money in a fund that will help the ones that are not so fortunate. That is modern insurance. And like today, they had to be careful of insurance fraud. In the marijuana business, one of the abuses was crop insurance. If the grower messes up the crop in some way (ex: over juicing), it is not an insurable claim. But the claims poured in and crop insurance was pulled from the market.

This will be a three-part piece on insurance and the marijuana industry and in future issues I will go into greater detail regarding policies. In closing, I would like to talk a bit about worker’s compensation because I’ll bet most of you are currently in violation. The fastest way to get shut down, not only for the marijuana industry, but any company that has employees, is not having or being in violation of worker’s compensation laws. In a nutshell, worker’s compensation is priced via your payroll. So, in a regular corporation (LLC, C Corp, S Corp), the owners who make the most can be exempt from worker’s compensation coverage. But, as of Jan 2, 2017, according to my state fund underwriter, non-profit companies must have all working officers included in their worker’s compensation calculations.

The good news is crop insurance is back and it includes better coverage, stiffer underwriting and a better price. We can now insure up to 10mil per location of living plants and pesticide & herbicide application endorsements in your general liability policy. Along with crop and general liability, there also is product liability (for whatever you're making), property (for the harvested plant) including transportation/cargo, equipment breakdown and worker’s compensation.

Worker’s compensation is mandatory in all states, but the laws are different in each state. So, you need to check with your state compensation program. Also, non-profit officers have minimum and maximum income guidelines. Meaning, if you are only paying yourself $25k, the minimum just might be $34K and the worker’s compensation underwriter is going to price it at $34K. This is called “minimum premium.” Please look for the continuation of “Marijuana Business Insurance” in the next two Issues. PROTECTING PATIENTS THIS MONTH, JUST ONE MONTH BEFORE WE GO RECREATIONAL, I WANT TO DIRECT MY RANT TO OUR CULTIVATORS.

ALL I ASK, IS THAT YOU DON'T FORGET ABOUT US. REMEMBER THE PATIENTS, WE ARE THE ONES WHO YOU BEGAN YOUR BUSINESSES WITH. PATIENTS ARE THE ONES WHO HAVE BEEN KEEPING YOUR BUSINESSES AFLOAT WHILE YOU WAITED FOR THIS MOMENT TO HAPPEN. WE WILL CONTINUE TO CONSUME YOUR HIGH QUALITY, LAB-TESTED CANNABIS AND WE HOPE THAT YOU DO NOT LOSE SIGHT OF THE MEDICAL ASPECTS OF THIS MOVEMENT.

Currently, quite a few growers are doing the old supply and demand scam that businesses from other industries have always done. Being in the industry, I see price sheets from all the companies in the state. I KNOW what they are charging for product. The reason dispensaries are raising prices is because the growers are asking for more. Recreational dispensaries will open here in less than a month, why raise the prices when you know you’re about to move a large amount of product? I realize what you have put into your grows. Blood, sweat, tears, a lot of love and millions of dollars! But again, you know full well that you're about to see sales figures that go through the roof. There is no reason except full on greed to be raising prices that have been in place since you started. This is happening across the board. In my opinion, Nevada has been producing some of the best cannabis in the world. I see the results from it everyday. Let us continue our love affair with each other, don't just bend me over! Again, please don’t forget why this all started. Cannabis is a medicine, and we are medical patients. Many of us are really really sick. Many patients can’t work or are on a very limited income. We DEPEND on YOU for our medicine to ease our pain, fight our diseases, help us sleep, help us cope with life, find some kind of comfort and generally make life better. Your reward for your tireless work and major investment is coming. It's right around the corner, and I thank you. I've been able to sleep with a full heart every night because of all the people I get to help with your amazing medicine. I wish you could see the look of joy, relief, happiness and peace we budtenders get to see in the faces of the patients and their families we get to help by selling them YOUR products. It's an amazing feeling. You are doing GREAT work and I'm still amazed every time I get to walk through a grow and see the love you are giving to your plants. All I ask is that you give patients some of that love too when recreational happens and continue giving us access to safe, clean, reasonably priced medicine. Rob Ruckus is a Nevada medical marijuana patient, and budtender at Inyo Fine Cannabis, a long-time Las Vegas resident and cannabis activist, star of A&E's Bad Ink, musician and host of Ruckus on the Radio.

TOKIN' WITH THE INFAMOUS: DESERT ROSE NURSERY BY HOPPER THE CHRONISSEUR that. My partner Ron started this with another collective that he had about seven years ago, and then we teamed up in 2013 and started Desert Rose Nursery. We do our best to have a good reputation of having bug free, pest free genetics that you can count on. HOPPER: What are some of the hottest genetics out right now?

M

ost people never stop to think about where their cannabis actually comes from. There is a long process before it hits the jar and gets in your hands. Genetics are a huge part of that process, and are a major factor in the quality of what goes into your lungs. This month I met up with Orion, of Desert Rose Nursery, and we dropped off racks and racks of their freshly cut, fully rooted clones to collectives and dispensaries around town. While we were on the road, I asked Orion to share with Vegas Cannabis readers what it is like to run a cannabis nursery, and why genetics are so important. HOPPER: How’s it goin’ brother? ORION: Pretty good man. Just busy, busy. It’s springtime so we’re running around constantly.

the reasons we started this, was to make sure that people were getting what they were supposed to have. HOPPER: Explain the advantages of growing from clone, rather than seed. ORION: The seed thing is fun ‘cause you can get ten different varieties from one set of genetics. We do the best job of trying to pick out the best female, and we run with that. We save you anywhere from three months, or at least a month or so. If you get it rooted and ready to go, you can plug it right into your soil or any medium you’re using, and you’re off to the races. With seed, you have to wait for it to come out, germinate, see if it’s male or female. Sometimes you might get more males than females, and you just wasted all that time. We guarantee females, so when you buy ten, you have ten plants that are ready to go. You don’t have to waste the time.

HOPPER: Right on. Let’s do this, and then get onto the next stop. Genetics are everything when it comes to growing. Explain to our readers why that is.

HOPPER: And it’s an identical genetic makeup of the mother.

ORION: If you don’t get the right genetics, you’re just going to be wasting your time. There’s a lot of people out there who will sell you bunk stuff that might herm out and ruin your entire crop. That’s one of

HOPPER: Reputation is everything in this industry, and you have a great one. How long have you been doing this?

ORION: Yes, exactly. It’s identical, every single one.

ORION: Man, everybody loves the Cookies, everybody loves OGs. Right now, Sunset Sherbet is doing really good. Everybody talks shit about Blue Dream, but everybody still wants it! Haha…they want those yields. All the classics are still around, and people are liking a lot of the exotics. My personal favorite is OG Kush. HOPPER: For me, Pre-98 Bubba never gets old. ORION: Oh yeah, that was one of the first strains I came across and fell in love with. HOPPER: How many different strains do you typically have available? ORION: It varies. We’re addicted to collecting genetics ourselves. We’ve got tons of packs of seeds we haven’t even started yet. When we find new strains, we grab them. Right now we have probably anywhere from sixty to seventy different strains. Some, we just got that we’re running to flower, to check and make sure they are what they say they are. That’s a process that we’re constantly doing, is making sure that we’re bringing the best genetics that we can to everybody. We want everyone to be able to grow whatever they want. If they see it in a shop, we want them to be able to get it from us and grow it themselves. We’re not hoarders, or anything like that, we’re out spreading the love.

HOPPER: That’s awesome. How do you keep such a large scale operation going with so many moms, teens, and babies all at different stages? ORION: A really, really good team of people. We’ve done a lot of work getting people from Cuyamaca College that are educated in horticulture, and other people we know that we can trust to bring into our own shop and make sure that they’re going to take the same care of the plants as we would ourselves. A good team is key. We couldn’t do it alone. HOPPER: That’s awesome. There’s no way to make it without people you can trust. Before we wrap it up, do you have any shout outs? ORION: Yeah, all the collectives that have our racks. We’re grateful for them giving us a chance. Thank you Torrey Holistics, where we just came from. They’ve been great to us. HOPPER: I see you out at all the events, too. ORION: Yeah, we’re at all the Cannabis Farmers Markets. We are gonna be at The Good Life Festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in September, just bringing plants, trying to get rid of the stigma by letting people see the plant. We get a little jaded to it, but there’s a lot of people who have never seen a cannabis plant before. It’s good to get out and talk to them and let them know that it’s just a plant, there’s nothing crazy about it. Grow it, dry it, smoke it, and you’ll appreciate it. KABUNKY Fruit Salad Rosin Puck

Fruit Salad Rosin Pucks are in high demand in Vegas. They can't keep this flavor on the shelves. The Fruit Salad Shatter made a serious impact on my memory. Fruit Salad Rosin Pucks offer a unique entourage effect obtained from its calamity of solventless terpenes and cannabinoids. The flavor of this 100% natural hash is more appealing than most heatpressed rosins, with this particular blend having retained an abundance of limonene and pinene. Pinene opens lungs and limonene has been known to help strengthen the immune system to fight cancer. Dabbing this Fruit Salad is medically beneficial to patients with asthma, sleeplessness, and even those with skin cancer. Dynamic. THC- 79.4% Limonene- 4.5 mg/g a-Pinene- 3.8 mg/g Humulene- 0.8 mg/g

There is a slight learning process involved in dabbing. I can't believe how long my head change lasted here. That's what's up. So everyone else is wrong? I don't get it. You're all right, the world is wrong. See Genesis 1:29…. King James Bible reads, “And God said, behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Thank God for cannabis! GREEN & GOLD Northern Lights

Named after the natural, green aura light display that lights up the Arctic sky, this strain of cannabis shares quite a few similarities with the mysterious aura. Both light up the night, and demand your attention. This flower will put you in a trance, similar to how the light show makes it hard to look away. Northern Lights will make a believer out of you. Maybe in the future I won't underestimate any vape tanks. The terpenes are plentiful and the top three boast over 5%. I'd like to see the complete lab results and learn the total terpinoid content. Good job. This one is strong, and designed for a man. I'm gonna vape this one til it's dry. THC- 73.35% CBD- 0.23% CBN- 1.05% Myrcene- 21.24 mg/g Limonene- 20.49 mg/g Caryophyllene- 10.24 mg/g

Sweet and sugary Tangilope Shatter is another fine snap and pull concentrate that will ease stress, depression, and anxiety. Caryophyllene is your friend. Humulene stops cancer and tumors. Myrcene makes you hungry and tired, but 1.72 mg/g is not that much at all. 10.32mg of caryophyllene equates to 1.03%, so do the math. Tangilope is perfect for a nightcap. Let the good times roll with this shatter, it shouldn't slow you down too much. THC- 70.23% Caryophyllene- 10.32 mg/g Humulene- 4.32 mg/g Myrcene- 1.72 mg/g

MATRIX Gorilla Glue #4 BHO Shatter

I'm a major fan of Matrix flower. Some people even think they pay me to praise their shit. But I can confirm that I don't get paid a single cent for introducing ANY products to patients. I wouldn't accept payment for this even if someone insisted. The products are my work and I love that my eyes are closing, and my body is already asleep. I'm writing this with my mind, and the assistance of the actual ESPDictator2020 that Keanu Reeves used in the movie The Matrix. Nice score at the auction, Evan. I'm able to work with my mind. It's hard not to backspace though when I'm dabbed out by the Gorilla. THC- 72.66% CBD- 1.53 mg/g Caryophyllene- 9.8 mg/g Myrcene- 6.4 mg/g

Some cannabis companies throw “alcohol parties.” But not this Strawberry Banana. We're #notspineless cuz we got Strawberry Banana Vader blood through our veins. It’s the weekend, sit back and relax, brother. Chill out sister, I see you over there. Don't think you're invisible yet. At least wait until you dab this shit and your body melts down in between the couch cushions with all the little dust bunnies. Yeah, hit this right out of the syringe. Watch you don’t squirt too much into your nail, have some control. OK, you're invisible now, microscopic. No one can see you under there. Your eyes are tired, struggling to read the next sentence. Sometimes when I smoke straight CBD, I get a little headache, but every time it's mixed up into a dab-cocktail, it adds flavor, and delivers THC to the head. This particular vape cartridge, Antidote was crystallized inside the glass encasing, making it nearly impossible to vape. So I broke out the Mr. Miyagi trick, and rubbed my hands together vigorously, creating enough heat to melt the CBD crystals into a consumable distillate. We won't have this problem in a couple months here in Vegas, when the temps rise over 120. Just put it on the car dash, and ration it, cuz it goes quickly. CBD- 82.7%

When my coach used to tell me to give 110%, I wasn't actually able to do it. I never took it literally, it was just a figure of speech. I really like this product, but I can't accept the fact that it has more than 100% of anything because there's only 100% possible. The oddest thing about it is that there is only .5g of concentrate here, but the label says there is actually 506.6mg or .506g. Where did the extra THC come from? Why doesn't it weigh more than .506 if the THC is at least that heavy. Fuck it let's dab. Shit! OK. Maybe Remedy turned in a little extra credit. A+ 105%, LOL. t

he U.S. is fighting a deadly epidemic of opioid use and death. Each day, an estimated 91 people die nationwide from opioid overdoses. Overdose deaths involving prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999, and so have sales of these prescription drugs. From 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people have died in the U.S. from overdoses related to prescription opioids, according to the Center for Disease Control. The epidemic affects every state, but in Nevada, the conditions exist for this death rate to drop dramatically through the use of medical cannabis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) report entitled Prescription Painkiller Overdoses in the US, Nevada has some of the highest rates of prescription painkillers sold and drug overdose deaths per capita. Per units prescribed per 100,000 patients, Nevada ranks: • 2nd highest for hydrocodone (Vicodin and Lortab);

• 2nd highest for oxycodone (Percodan and Percocet); • 4th highest for methadone; • 7th highest for codeine. This same report, issued by the National Governor’s Association Policy Academy on Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention,

found that Nevada has the fourth highest drug overdose mortality rate in the United States, with 20.7 per 100,000 people suffering drug overdose fatalities, according to a Prescription Drug Abuse. This study found the number of drug overdose deaths, a majority of which are from prescription drugs in Nevada, increased by 80% since 1999 when the rate was 11.5 per 100,000. There has been a substantial increase in heroin-related deaths in Nevada between 2009 and 2013, with over double the number of cases between those years. New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows opioids were involved in 28,648 deaths in 2014, meaning more Americans are dying from drug overdoses than in motor vehicle crashes each year. Every day, over 1,000 people are treated in emergency departments for misusing prescription opioids, according to the CDC. The impact of opioid addiction extends to a wider circle of individuals than just the abuser. States, families and human services

Nevada has been hit particularly hard by this epidemic. The Attorney General for Nevada has stated that “the abuse of prescribed pain killers is causing a conundrum for doctors – treat the pain or worry about addiction.” The conundrum could be mitigated through the use of medical cannabis, which has been shown to be an effective pain relief substitute for opioids. Numerous formal medical and pharmacological research studies, including those in Israel dating back to the 1960s, found that cannabis has specific medical properties. In the 1960s, Prof. Raphael Mechoulam and his colleague Yechiel Gaoni at the Weizmann Institute of Science isolated, analyzed and synthesized the main psychoactive ingredient in the cannabis plant, tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Later, Professor Mechoulam found that cannabinoids were present the brain. Ruth Gallily, a professor emerita of immunology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has studied another main constituent of cannabis — cannabidiol, or CBD, which is considered a powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety agent. According to an article in the New York Times, “Israeli researchers say cannabis can be beneficial for a variety of illnesses and conditions, from helping cancer patients relieve pain and ease

EDUCATION & HEALTH loss of appetite to improving the quality of life for people with post-traumatic stress disorder and neuropsychological conditions. The natural ingredients in the plant, they say, can help with digestive function, infections and recovery after a heart attack.” Additional formal research into the non-intoxicating, pharmacological effects of cannabis have found that medical cannabis can be effectively used to treat a wide variety of painful conditions, from headache to the pain of childbirth. Medical marijuana patients, including those suffering from cancer, AIDS patients, migraine sufferers, and people with spastic and movement disorders, said marijuana helped relieve their painful symptoms. “Cannabis is a spectacularly pharmaceutically active botanical. We have already identified very potent cannabinoid profiles which have specific applications to certain conditions like sleep problems, pain and appetite control, and issues associated with Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative conditions,” according to William Levine of CannRx, part of Izun, an Israeli company researching new medical uses for cannabis. Cannabis may also be a viable treatment for opioid addiction. In a paper, written by Scranton law firm, The Slocum Firm, the authors said: “Current treatment methods for opioid addiction are not effective, and they can create problems of their own. Methadone, for example, can cause severe chronic pain and may need to be taken for a lifetime. Marijuana provides a way to treat opioid addicts that is safer than current medical treatments and is highly effective. A new program in Massachusetts that uses marijuana to treat opioid addicts has a 75% success rate.” A 2016 University of Michigan study found 64% of people suffering from chronic pain cut their use of opioids after using medical marijuana. Another 45% of patients also experienced fewer side effects after using marijuana for pain management.

How Decriminalized CBD Can Help Solve This Problem in Nevada Due to the serious nature of this national problem, numerous public health, law enforcement, elected officials and drug policy experts, have weighed in on the potential impact of cannabis legalization on black market drugs, including opioids One report suggests that as legalization takes hold, the black market will crumble. According to Greenwave Advisors, “Based on wholesale pricing data from the Cannabis Benchmark, we estimate that currently, the illicit market in the U.S. is approximately $36 billion, which we determine based upon a multiplier of reported marijuana confiscations by the U.S. border patrol and quantities of plant eradication initiated by the DEA.” Aside from the decrease in the illicit market that would save money on law enforcement and prison incarcerations, while freeing police to pursue more serious crimes, decriminalization also has a hard-dollar impact on Medicare and Medicare-provided prescriptions. A study by Ashley Bradford and W.D. Bradford examined whether states that decriminalized cannabis saw a change in the prescription behaviors among Medicare Part D recipients between 2007 and 2014. Their results found that patients who replaced opioids with cannabis generated a huge savings for the program. Their report also said “we found that the use of prescription drugs for which marijuana could serve as a clinical alternative fell significantly,” which meant that patients who had access to medical cannabis were receiving fewer prescriptions per doctor for pharmaceutical drugs in several disease categories where marijuana can be used as a potential treatment. The study found the greatest proportional decrease in prescriptions was in medicines for spasticity, followed by patients suffering from seizures. Medicare Part D is a fee-

for-service and covers 26% of Medicaid enrollees. The authors also noted that the total estimated Medicaid savings associated with these laws range from $260.8 million in 2007 to $475.8 in 2014. They then estimated that if all 50 states had decriminalized cannabis in 2014 and hence, CBD products, it would have produced savings of about $1 billion nationally or an average savings of $19.825 million per state per year. Since their study only covered 26% of Medicaid enrollees, the authors also estimated that if the cannabis products in all their forms, including CBD, were extended to the entire Medicaid population in all 50 states that decriminalized cannabis products to be used, it would result in savings of $3.89 billion. The authors noted that the conditions that could be treated with cannabis were depression, anxiety, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

P

The Other Healing Cannabinoid ublic support for medicinal cannabis has increased significantly over the past decade thanks in part to Charlotte’s Web, a high cannabidiol (CBD) strain made famous by CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta in the documentary “Weed”. Charlotte’s Web is a strain of cannabis that was developed for a young girl in Colorado suffering from Dravet’s Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy which causes severe seizures and a variety of other health issues. Charlotte’s Web contains high levels of CBD and virtually no THC (< 0.3%), so the user is calm and relaxed without the psychoactive effects. For many children with Dravet’s Syndrome pharmaceutical treatments have been ineffective and have produced significant side effects; for these patients, CBD has been shown to be a highly effective and safe treatment with a meaningful reduction in seizure activity. The use of laboratory testing has introduced consumers to a variety of cannabinoids aside from THC. As the public becomes more educated about cannabis, many consumers will be drawn to strains and products that contain significant levels of CBD and other lesser-known cannabinoids which do not produce the strong psychoactive effects that have been commonly associated with cannabis use. While CBD has gained the majority of attention for its medicinal potential other cannabinoids have shown promise in treating a variety of ailments without producing psychoactive effects.

BY OSCAR HUNT, BSC, DARRYL JOHNSON, PHD & BRUCE BURNETT, MD: ACE ANALYTICAL LABORATORY

Cannabigerol (CBG) is the second most abundant cannabinoid in many cannabis products, and has shown some similarities to CBD. CBG is currently being used in a number of pharmacological studies to better understand how it interacts with the endocannabinoid system. Like THC and CBD, CBG is found in its acidic form in raw cannabis, cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). CBG is described as ‘non-psychoactive’ and is also found in industrial hemp. CBGA has been labeled as the stem cell cannabinoid since it is the precursor for cannabinoids including THCA, CBDA, and cannabichromenic acid (CBCA). CBGA is formed in resin gland cells and secreted into the storage cavity of cannabis trichomes. During flowering, CBGA is converted into other cannabinoids via enzymes known as synthases. CBGA is converted into THCA by THCA synthase, CBDA by CBDA synthase, and CBCA via CBCA synthase. CBGA is consumed rapidly after forming and does not accumulate significantly in the trichome head. Contrary to popular belief, CBGA levels are not a meaningful way to determine optimal harvest time. High levels of CBGA are a product of the plant’s genetic makeup and synthase levels, not an indication of a premature harvest. Like CBD, CBG has shown many promising health benefits, but more research is needed to fully assess its potential. In limited studies, CBG has been shown to affect many types of cells throughout the body. CBG has demonstrated an ability to activate CB2 receptors in immune system cells and reduce inflammation similarly to its cousin CBD. In bone marrow cells,

activation of CB2 receptors by CBG can stimulate bone structure growth by promoting the recruitment of stem cells for the formation of bone cells. CBG can also interact with α2-adrenergic receptors in vascular tissue which may result in decreases in blood pressure. A similar compound, dimethylheptyl-CBG, has shown hypotensive and vascular relaxation effects. In neuron cells CBG shows activity at the 5HT1A serotonin receptor, reversing the anti-nausea effects produced by CBD. This interesting serotonergic activity of CBG may account for its mood enhancing properties. Investigators have demonstrated antidepressant effects with CBG treatment in an animal model and some believe it may possess efficacy similar to CBC for improving depression in patients. Also in neuron cells, CBG shows strong inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) uptake. When this occurs, boosted levels of GABA in the neuron cells inhibit uptake of other neurotransmitters. This produces an anti-anxiety effect in the patient, helping to improve their natural ‘chill-out’ mechanisms. For patients with epilepsy this may be significant. The antiepileptic effect associated with CBD is thought to be mediated in part by increased GABA levels resulting from blockade of GABA uptake; this indicates CBG might be an effective anti-epilepsy treatment. Many tinctures used for anti-epilepsy purposes contain CBG, which is likely a contributing factor to the effectiveness of these products. Additionally, the growth of new nerve cells in adults may be stimulated by CBG through its influence on GABA levels in neurons.

Many of these potentially clinically significant pathways occur outside of the brain and therefore CBG's interaction with them is non-intoxicating and non-psychoactive. Since CBG produces no intoxicating effects, patients may not initially appreciate any positive effects it is exerting on their body. Unfortunately, there are no CBG-only products available at this time so patients cannot evaluate this cannabinoid in an isolated fashion. CBG is only one of the many pharmacologically active substances found in the incredibly complex and remarkably interesting cannabis plant which deserves further characterization and study. Cannabis is widely used by patients and 'self medicating' adults from all walks of life to treat a wide variety of conditions including sleep disturbances, anxiety, pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Often this use of cannabis results in a decrease in the use of prescription medications for these same conditions. Only through the detailed analysis of the particular chemical compounds found in cannabis and their effects will a clearer understanding of these relations be made evident. This may allow the potential development of more 'natural' remedies, with fewer side effects, to many common ailments.

MEDICINE

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> By Jennifer Shepherd, RN

he endocannabinoid system is found in every living vertebrate animal from humans to sea squirts. This system is made up of receptor sites that work with compounds called endocannabinoids that are created in your body. These compounds work to restore and maintain BALANCE.

Ingesting cannabis mimics the effects of these compounds. CANNABIS = BALANCE. When your body’s endocannabinoid system is not producing enough cannabinoids on its own, this leads to imbalance also known as dis-ease. This imbalance can be corrected with plant cannabinoids or Phytocannabinoids, and a properly maintained nutrition.

For thousands of years, mankind has been attracted to plants which have scent and flavor profiles. Within each plant are an array of terpenes and cannabinoids. Our bodies benefit from the diverse array of nutritional and medicinal aspects found within these terpenes. Cannabinoids are created from terpenes. So, all cannabinoids are terpenes, but not all terpenes are cannabinoids. We are naturally intuitive about which plants to put into our bodies, we have just forgotten due to the access to processed foods. We have an opportunity now to be naturally guided to health and wellness through plant medicine and holistic living. The nutrients you put into your body determine how your body is going to rebuild its cells. The body is in a constant state of destroying and rebuilding cells. This means you literally are what you eat at the cellular level. Consuming processed and GMO foods is easy to do, however these foods have little to no nutritional value. This is a huge problem for everyone in this country. I went into a grocery store in the midwest a few months ago and wanted a bag of dried fruit. Every bag of dried fruit except one was genetically modified. Even when we appear to be making healthy food choices, we still need to read labels. Using cannabis as a tool to assist putting your cells back into balance is a blessing, and incorporating proper

nutrition is a way to change your life and your healthstyle completely. Eating foods that are physiologically natural is the best approach. The worst foods to consume are substitute sugars, preservatives and GMOs, alcohol, white flour or super simple starches, margarine, sugar, dairy, animal proteins, and fried foods. Nearly all whole foods contain the spectrum of essential amino acids in sufficient quantity. The concept that plant proteins are incomplete or inferior has been dismissed by the nutritional community as myth. It is completely possible to get all your nutritional needs met through plant-based nutrition. Hemp seeds contain all 20 amino acids including the omega 3 and omega 6 essential fatty acids. Chia seeds, spirulina, and quinoa are complete proteins. Proteins derived from plant foods like legumes, seeds, grains, and vegetables (potatoes, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, pumpkin seed, cashews, cauliflower, quinoa, pistachios, turnip greens, and black-eyed peas) are generally complete as well. Pairing certain foods together such as black pepper and turmeric becomes complementary for the body to receive the antiinflammatory properties of the turmeric. Because black pepper contains cannabinoidlike terpenes that stimulate CB2 receptors, this increases

the bioavailability of turmeric the body is receiving. Eating a mango an hour before consuming cannabis increases the amount of myrcene available to your body increasing the pain relief effect.

Using cannabis is a great tool to reset your cells into balance, however incorporating proper nutrition is vital if you want the whole effect of the healthy lifestyle. We are literally what we eat. Choose your food wisely. It’s one of the most important choices you make daily. Nurse Jen provides private consultations to patients wanting to adjust their lifestyle by incorporating cannabis. Cannabis in Sports

\\ #702VCM \\ VEGAS CANNABIS BY WILLIE SPEARMINT

THE OFFICIAL DECISION ON CANNABIS IN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS Near the end of 2016 we learned Las Vegas would be home to the Vegas Golden Knights professional hockey team. This year, it was confirmed that the NFL team commonly known as the Raiders, is relocating to Las Vegas. As the jewel of the Silver State, Las Vegas is also known as the fight capital of the world for professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA). What do all these professional sports have in common? Athletes must endure repeated impacts to the head during competition and training throughout their careers. As cannabis legalization continues to sweep across the country, professional athletes in every sport are beginning to take note. Last month, Green Flower Media held a free livestream educational cannabis conference with a variety of panels and topics. One panel was dedicated to professional athletes which included retired NFL players and retired MMA Legend Bas Rutten. These former-pros spoke about athletes in high impact sports exploring the healing benefits of cannabis on conditions like chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a type of brain damage. As reported in Vegas Cannabis Issue 29, the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) has come a long way since September 2015 when it proposed a lifetime ban on UFC fighter Nick Diaz who exceeded the allowed in-competition THC limit for the 3rd time. Since then, Anthony Marnell III has been installed as the new chair of the NAC and is open to exploring options giving athletes access to cannabis. “We are the gold standard here in Nevada, we are leading the way…We’re going to take some shots for this but that’s part of the job of this commission,” said Marnell January 13, 2017 at an (NAC) hearing establishing an open public process workshop to give the commission a more complete understanding of cannabis.

On March 11, 2017 at UFC Fight Night 106 in Fortaleza Brazil, UFC middleweight Kelvin Gastelum knocked out Vitor Belfort in round 1 of the main event. A month later Kelvin’s win was overturned by the Brazilian Athletic Commission, his win bonus forfeited, 20% of his total fight purse fined in addition to a 90-day suspension. The suspension ends June 11, eight days after UFC 212, where Gastelum was scheduled to fight Anderson Silva. As a result of the suspension Kelvin was pulled from the card leaving the UFC scrambling for a new main event which caused a butterfly effect type chain reaction rippling throughout the UFC. Kelvin uses cannabis for pain and sleep, although he claims to have quit consuming cannabis three weeks before the fight, he tested positive for in-competition use. Traditionally, in-competition is considered 12 hours before and after a fight. The threshold for in-competition use (recently raised by the NAC) is 150 nanograms per milliliter in a urine test. The 150 nanograms is an arbitrary number not based on any scientific findings about impairment and with no direct correlation to the euphoric effects of cannabis. The fines and other costs incurred have reportedly cost the professional fighter nearly $100,000! Popular UFC Fighters Nick and Nate Diaz are well known cannabis ambassadors in the sport of MMA. Last August, during a press conference after a fight, a reporter asked Nate what he was vaping, to which he replied CBD. The press conference took place two hours after the fight which is technically considered in-competition. Nate was given a public warning instead of a suspension and on April 1, 2017, a rule change occurred. Under the UFC’s antidoping policy with the United States Anti Doping Agency, the in-competition window now closes after the completion of the postfight drug test sample collection. If that sample isn’t collected within a reasonable

amount of time, the in-competition window will close one hour after the fighter’s postbout medical clearance. On May 22, 2017 UFC promoter Dana White appeared on GGN News hosted by Snoop Dog. Snoop asked the promoter if UFC fighters can smoke weed and his response was, “We’re not saying you can’t smoke weed. You can smoke all the weed you want to. Twenty-four hours before the fight you can’t smoke weed.” The day before that video was released, Snoop gave a performance during the UFC Fighters Retreat in Las Vegas at the newly opened UFC Headquarters. Although sources tell us no fighters smoked cannabis during the concert, the connection between Snoop and the UFC appears to be more than just a coincidence. In other news, the mystery surrounding the abrupt retirement of UFC light heavyweight contender Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson was solved. After losing a championship fight April 8, Rumble shocked the world by retiring at the prime of his fight career. He claimed his motives were strictly business but kept his future a secret. For weeks, the world speculated with rumors of his move to the NFL. Mid-May, Rumble appeared on the “Heated Conversations” podcast hosted by former WWE star Booker T. and vaguely revealed his plans, “We’re opening up a facility, if you know what I mean, it’s for medical uses. … We got some good things going on. It’s already big. We're just waiting for that law to pass and whenever it passes, we’re golden. We're playing our cards right, we're playing by the book, so that way there’s no issue." Although he never used the words cannabis or marijuana, most were able to deduce his business endeavors from the conversation. Should MMA consider a therapeutic use exemption for fighters with a medical cannabis license?

AYURVEDIC ATTUNEMENTS An assessment of your most natural state helps determine your natural balance. A holistic approach to finding balance includes diet modifications, activity adjustments, yoga, breathing techniques, and herbal supplements. Each season is related to a dosha, coming into summer we are welcoming pitta qualities both internally and externally. Imbalances show up as fiery, irritability, competitiveness, and inflammation. Pitta oversees digestion, temperature maintenance, comprehension and sensory perception. Tuning in to these qualities, we can balance by eating fresh fruits and vegetables that are in season, cooking with coconut oil, practicing restorative yin yoga and also swimming! yurveda has been passed down through centuries as a complete healing system dating back 5000 years. It’s an ancient science of whole being-body, mind, spirit. The key to Ayurvedic wellness and healing is accepting that health is not a “one size fits all” approach. As the elements compose our external world, they also account for our individual human make-up. Embracing our unique nature and situations can help us fundamentally balance. Ayurveda views the world in three constitutional principles: vata, pitta, and kapha. These doshas or constitutions are specific to each of us and help us to be in or out of balance. Vata regulates the principles of movement, composed of air and space, being dry, light and cold. Pitta has qualities of fire and water, heat and oiliness with the principle of transformation. Kapha governs stability and structure composed of earth and water, it is heavy, cold and dense.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Keeping products clean and safe is such an important factor in the cannabis industry. We all know one of the best ways to do this is by wearing gloves. Wearing gloves seems effortless, but it can become complex when they are not used correctly. First things first, make sure your gloves are the right size. Over-sized gloves can get in the way making it harder to handle products. Wearing a glove that is too small will cause ripping that will contaminate the substances you’re handling. Also important is to remember that you are wearing gloves to protect products from things that could potentially ruin them. If you have your gloves on, and you touch a surface like your cell phone then touch the product with those same gloves, you will contaminate the product with the germs from your cell phone. Gloves need to be removed and replaced every time you touch a surface with potential contaminates. Gloves are a must in maintaining a clean environment. Remember to always wear gloves and to always wear them properly! >>>> Alexis Solorzano >>>> Green Medical Supplies, A division of Champion Medical Supplies, greenmedicalsupplies.com

>>> DoobieDuck VEGAS CANNABIS MAGAZINE: How long have you been photographing cannabis?

VCM: Your male plant photos are truly one-of-a-kind, tell us what inspired them?

DOOBIEDUCK: I have been serious about cannabis photography since the early 70’s when starting my first grows. At that time I joined cannabis web forums like marijuanagrowing.com and icmag. com which I found as special places where I could meet likeminded growers and share my art.

DOOBIEDUCK: Male plants, if undisturbed, out of any wind or air flow, will build up a large amount of pollen when ripening. When I walked past one I was saving in an isolated room for breeding one day just the vibration of my passing caused a cloud of pollen to drop. That immediately caught my eye, I envisioned this as an image that very moment. You don’t see male images often and I saw a need to share and show them to people who were not familiar with them just like I do with the females. My images have been great tools for growers and breeders to use as references. They have inspired hundreds of new photographers. I often hear from cannabis patients that my images make them smile when they see them. Something I cherish is hearing that and helping patients in any way possible. Even if it is something so little as a smile, I too am a suffering patient and understand.

VCM: How long have you been growing cannabis? DOOBIEDUCK: I have been growing cannabis since the early 70’s too. My favorite strains to grow are my own hybrids. Early on, I created many crosses and bred with the intention of creating something unique to photograph. Now, preserving the old genetics I’ve acquired is my main focus for breeding. My favorite strains to photograph are anything unique or out of the ordinary. I have worked with many of the world's leading breeders for years, growing out their genetics to photograph and share with the world on the web. I’ve done some promotional work as well, such as Tom Hills seed pack design. VCM: Do you only photograph your own plants? DOOBIEDUCK: No, I take on special assignments for anyone that needs cannabis photography done but my disability issues are now hindering my traveling and undertaking of that type work. I will always consider projects.

VCM: You also do amazing diorama photos, what was your inspiration there? DOOBIEDUCK: I really can’t say what inspired them other than my desire to capture something that would shake up the people on social media; they did just that, and have ever since! A little something interesting for those of you that like the diorama photos is that the greenhouse, the cabin, windmill, benches, some of the bushes and trees were all handcrafted by me.

ART & CULTURE

They, along with my hummingbirds and cannabis photos are the reasons for my continued notoriety and ever growing popularity. VCM: And last, but certainly not least, give us some insight on your eye catching hummingbird photos. DOOBIEDUCK: I have captured wildlife and hummingbird images for 40 years and have always had feeders around my home. For no special reason, other than to watch their beauty, I placed a feeder near my grow years back. With a dozen or so birds flying around the feeder competing for nectar I noticed some of the birds wandering off flying up to the cannabis colas in my grow. They often do this, flying up to anything tall near a feeder when they are frenzying around competing for food. They are just searching for the nectar they need to survive when flying up to cannabis. I’ve never seen them feed on, or even attempt to feed on cannabis. I’ve never seen them touch the colas or the plant. Somehow they can discern from looking there is no nectar there for them and they then fly off rapidly, which really makes capturing these type images even more difficult. It is only the placement of my camera and the lenses used that makes it appear as if they are feeding on the plant in my images; they do not feed on cannabis which I mention often on my site and the web as I do not want to deceive anyone. But, my images are inevitably shared often all across the net with misinformed headlines such as “hummingbirds feasting on cannabis.” That is something I try very hard to correct when I see it. My hummingbird images are not photoshopped, they are single frame digital photos captured in one moment in time, nothing added. VCM: Where can interested buyers find your photos? DOOBIEDUCK: My cannabis images and art are available as prints and enlargements on-line now in my Smugmug store via www.cannabiseyecandy.com. I often take on special orders via the email listed on my site, doobieduck.com. I’m limited by my health nowadays and can no longer travel to do retail shows like the Emerald Cup, which I miss dearly. VCM: Can we follow you on social media? DOOBIEDUCK: Yes of course. I have a large following on Facebook as Jeff Scheetz and several pages there that can be found by searching for @macroimagery or @doobiesgenetics. I am also on Instagram as DoobieDuck, with a large and growing following there. I truly appreciate my friends, fans, and followers and would like to say thank you to everyone on social media who follows, likes, and shares my art. It is their comments and likes that inspire me to continue what I do. I have been a member of just about all the leading cannabis growing web forums for many years as well.

TAGZ1 >>>>>>>> ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Las Vegas based Artist, Robert “TAGZ1” Perez came to our attention back in March when we saw him painting live at Cannabis Cup. His unique style and risqué concepts have created a buzz for him here in the Las Vegas art scene. We we’re able to catch up with TAGZ1 as he gave us a glimpse into his art, creative process and the artist community.

MEAGAN ROMERO: What led you to become an artist? TAGZ1: I have always been an artist for as long as I can remember. I knew my professional career would involve art is some way.

86

By: Meagan Romero

MEAGAN: What type of art do you specialize in and how would you describe it? TAGZ1: I’m a commercial artist. An art director/graphic artist from 9 to 5. Freelance graphic artist and painter on my time. So, I would say design is my specialty. You can see it in every aspect of my work. MEAGAN: Does marijuana help you creatively? TAGZ1: At times. Great ideas happen with a brainstorm session and a bowl. I enjoy the ease of mind. The help from anxiety before an event, cool out before bed, or to simply relax. MEAGAN: What is your favorite thing about the Vegas art community?

TAGZ1: I’d have to say the comradery between the artists. Everyone is willing to help or give suggestions, let you borrow a light or grid for your set up. The exchange of ideas is awesome. It’s a great help in growing as an artist. MEAGAN: I know you do a lot events with other local artists here in Las Vegas, does marijuana play any role in your creative relationships? TAGZ1: If they smoke we smoke. I have always loved the social aspect of marijuana. MEAGAN: Where can people find your art and what can we expect from you in the coming year? TAGZ1: You can find me at TAGZ1.com all my social media links are there as well. Currently working on several commissions. Always doing graphics. Toward the end of the year I plan on showing my personal project that will encompass all the mediums I work with all in one project so follow me on social media for updates and teasers. MEAGAN: Any inspiring words for our readers or recommendations for young people trying to break into the art scene? TAGZ1: As far as the scene. Be part of it. Talk with people in the art district. Visit galleries, go to conventions. Be the scene. When it comes to producing art, don’t stop. There is no shortcut. The only way to get good is by putting in the hours. Forever a student.

Lekseno glass

L

as Vegas glass artist Lekseno has been working hard building up his name in the glass industry and his hard work is starting to payoff. Lekseno recently opened his own glass supply shop across from Cheetah's off the Las Vegas Strip. His shop has attracted some of the best glass artists in Las Vegas to set up shop and create art on a regular basis. DUSTIN AMATO: Tell me about the Doodlebop! LEKSENO: The Doodlebop originated from Based AND I working together on trying to make a small but still very functional mini tube. The name itself is a word that my friends and I have always used as pretty much a term for anything we can't recall the name of. A local collector of my work that's known as "Lil Heady" saw the first prototype and dubbed it a Doodlebop. It will forever make me smile now everytime I hear the word Doodlebop being used amongst the community. DUSTIN: What is your favorite thing to make right now?

92

BY DUSTIN AMATO

Wig Wag (sometimes called a reversal) - a line pattern consisting of spirals.

LEKSENO: I'd have to say mini tubes are my favorite things to build. I've always enjoyed wig wags and stacking multiple sections on one piece. When I started in 2004, I wanted to make bongs. After discovering the prices on lathes, I thought I’d never be able to make one. When the scene was evolving into more pieces for concentrates, the mini tube became very popular and it also gave me the chance to live my dream of making a bong but in a small compact way. DUSTIN: Tell me about yourself before you were a glass blower? LEKSENO: Before I got into glass blowing, I was a collector. I was a young kid who would save up money to buy expensive pieces from local shops. I've been a pothead all my life, and after seeing my first inside out spoon in 97 or 98 I was in love with the craft. The depth, the colors, techniques and overall shaping was just amazing to

me. I had no idea how it was done, but I knew that I wanted to collect as many as I could. DUSTIN: Do you still rap ? LEKSENO: I used to rap and make music from roughly 2000-2011. In my earlier days I made a lot of abstract hip hop with friends when we barely knew how to record ourselves. We had no fancy studios or engineers, just a mic, a computer, and a drum machine. Later on in my music career, my style had gone to a more indepth look at my surroundings and life. I had built a nice studio that many people had recorded in, but around 2011 I had so much on my plate that music was no longer a top priority.

DUSTIN: What was it like opening your own shop? LEKSENO: Opening House Of Boro was one of the biggest moves of my life. I’m a high school dropout who has never worked a 9 to 5, and to go from no knowledge of how a business works to running my own was definitely a crazy thing. I had this idea to help bring materials to the local artists that had never been available before. It was a bold move in a city whose scene was still growing, but I wanted to be the first and only to do it in Vegas before the culture vultures saw an opportunity. DUSTIN: How does it feel to have been up and running for a while and holding it down for Vegas?

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

LEKSENO: We recently celebrated our 2nd year on May 1, 2017 and I’m very thankful to all the artists out there that have supported us and kept our doors open. I had no idea there were as many local artists as there were until we opened back in 2015. We've also had a lot of people from out of state and other countries stop in to either work with us or get materials while visiting Las Vegas. It feels great to be able to provide artists both locally and out of town with the materials and supplies that they need to further progress their work. I’m very proud of what the local scene in Las Vegas has become and it’s growing more everyday. DUSTIN: Who taught you how to blow glass? And, how did you learn? Who inspires you currently? LEKSENO: Back in 2003, my buddy E Bomb saw my collection and informed me that he was a glass blower. At the time, I thought these pieces were made by machines similar to CNC work. He invited me over to his house to watch him work and I soon began to request and buy tons of custom work from him. Around 2004, I asked him to teach me and he was very reluctant to do so. Knowledge was not as freely shared then as it is today and artists weren’t

willing to just show anyone. A standard apprenticeship involved lots of money and contracts being signed. E Bomb later agreed that if I could get all my equipment and setup at my house he would teach me. At the time, I was 18, about to be 19 and the equipment was a total of about $4,000. By the time I had it all together, E Bomb had moved to Humboldt and I was forced to learn through trial and error. Shortly after I began working on my own, I met Phat Jack from DopeAss Distributors and he wound up introducing me to Shawn Fortney who is the guy I owe almost all of my career to. Shawn taught me everything I wanted to know even when he felt I was skipping traditional steps. Without Shawn, I most likely would’ve sold my torch and gave up due to how much material I was wasting daily trying to figure things out.

also enjoy good structure to a piece. These three artists have always had that shown in their work and definitely inspired me through my journey in this art form. DUSTIN: What would you say to artists trying to break into the game? LEKSENO: Make what you wanna make, and be consistent. Remember that it takes money to make money, so invest in your craft. The game is free but the hustle is sold separately. Making the piece is only half the battle my friends.

DUSTIN: Where can people find your work and connect with you? LEKSENO: Some of my pieces can be found at Gorilla Radio smoke shop in Las Vegas. You can also follow my work online @LEKSENOGLASS on instagram. Be sure to visit our shop for all your borosilicate needs: House of Boro, 2121 Western Ave, Ste.A4, Las Vegas, NV, 89102.

There are so many people to name that I'm currently inspired by with more and more artists popping up daily, but my main influences will always be Jason Lee, Talon and Eusheen. I’ve always been a linework fiend, and

COOKING WITH

>>>>> cannabis INFUSED SUMMER BBQ EXTRAVAGANZA

June is here and it is already hot! I love BBQ; I really love infused BBQ so I purchased a competition BBQ on a trailer for all the events coming up this summer. I am a judge for the Northern California High Times Cup in Sonoma June 3rd and 4th. I will be out there having fun catering for a few special guests. In July, you can find me at Chalice July 7th-9th, at the Cannabis Country Fair July 21st-23rd and at San Joaquin County's first ever CannaBud Cup July 29th and 30th. I will be serving up this menu all summer. Look for me out there, say hello and enjoy some infused BBQ.
