sMOKING ANTHEMS WHILE bringing The heat
ulti-platinum GRAMMY® & Golden Globe nominated artist Wiz Khalifa is known for smoking anthems like “Still Blazin” and “Young, Wild & Free,” but perhaps his biggest contribution to the culture of cannabis is “KK,” or Khalifa Kush, which is both a hit song and Wiz’s signature strain. You may be surprised to know that while you can now find Khalifa Kush products up and down the west coast and southwestern United States, Nevada was actually the first state where the brand was available for legal sale. The first batch of flower, grown by Nevada cultivator Tryke, dropped at Reef Dispensary in September 2016. The rest, as they say, is history. In the years since, the brand has grown to include prerolls, vape cartridges, gummies, syrups, concentrates, hemp blunts, and infused prerolls, which are available now in fine dispensaries across Nevada. Back in town this summer with multiple scheduled dates at Drai’s Nightclub & Beachclub, we finally caught up with Wiz to talk about all things Khalifa Kush and Las Vegas. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: How do you describe Khalifa Kush? WIZ KHALIFA: The original gassy OG. That power punch of the best weed there is. SS: You’re in Vegas so frequently for concerts, including your residency at Drai’s. Do you feel like you’re getting to know the city beyond what the average tourist sees? WK: Absolutely. I have been coming to Vegas consistently for over a decade and have lots of friends here. I know the lay of the land outside the strip area as well. SS: Has cannabis always been a part of your life?

WK: Yeah Yup. Cannabis has been around me a lot of my life. My cousins and I used to sneak little roaches back in the day. SS: What role does cannabis play in your art? WK: Cannabis helps me think, meditate, and create the perfect energy for me. SS: How did your relationship with Tryke come about? WK: When we first started talking with Tryke in 2015 we were all just entering the space and figuring things out. Since then we’ve worked alongside each other as our businesses have grown and their team has become family to us. SS: Are there any other strains under the Khalifa Kush umbrella? WK: We’ve been working for years on KK crosses getting them ready for commercial cultivation. We’ll be dropping one in Nevada later this year we are super excited about. We’ll make sure you guys get some first! SS: In what other states are Khalifa Kush products available? WK: Khalifa Kush products are currently available in California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Utah and Michigan next month with Florida coming later this year. SS: Anything new coming up musically, business wise and/or in cannabis? WK: Musically, I’ll be touring this summer with Logic for our “Vinyl Verse Tour” and dropping my album “Metaverse” later this year. And for cannabis, we are excited about how our new genetics are looking and will continue expanding into new markets.

STONEY CURTIS Stoney Curtis has been lighting up stages in Las Vegas since 1999, and he’s not done yet. A Chicago native, long time former Los Angeles resident and eventual Las Vegas local, Curtis performs in his own power trio, the Stoney Curtis Band, as well as in Count’s 77 with Danny Koker (Counting Cars, Count’s Kustoms, Count’s Vamp’d) in addition to curating an annual charity event, “KISS Night in Las Vegas”a non-profit project founded to raise awareness and funding for struggling public school music departments. We recently sat down with Curtis to talk about his music, his mantras and his affinity for the magic of cannabis. Jennifer Walker: Tell us how you got started as a musician, and how Stoney Curtis Band ultimately came to be… Stoney Curtis: Stoney Curtis and the Stoney Curtis Band are really one in the same. I got started on the southside of Chicago playing in a band with my buddy

Tony who I’d known since the age of 6. When we got to be into our teenage years, we formed a band called “Assault” and we played heavy metal and hard rock. My interest in music started when I was very young- my sister turned me on to music as well as my older brother. His friends were deep into Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper and KISS. I would listen to music and follow it in magazines. I was always attracted to the theatrics and showmanship of it all- the stage presence, the visual aspects and the mystique of these musicians was what really got me interested in playing music. My mom bought me an acoustic guitar when I was around 11 years old, and I was off from there.
Flintstones because his character was a total heartthrob. “Oh Stoney! It’s Stoney Curtis!” as Wilma, Betty and the Bedrock ladies swooned. Eric always felt like true Blues bands were really the lead guy- B.B. King, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, etc. So when we were thinking of a name for the band, Eric came up with “Stoney Curtis Band”. What he said to me was, “Because you’re Curtis, and it’s the Stoney Curtis Band, the audience is going to think that YOU are Stoney Curtis. Be prepared for people to start referring to you as ‘Stoney’”. Game on, I thought! Everyone started calling me Stoney and that’s how it all started. Of course, there is the added benefit of a stoner reference to my name, as well…I do like my weed!
JW: So you were self taught?
JW: What are your thoughts about cannabis?
SC: Pretty much self taught. There were a few little local music shops in my neighborhood where I took some basic lessons, but I’m overall, self taught. As I got older, I outgrew the basic music lessons and playing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. I wanted to play “Cat Scratch Fever”! I wanted to Rock! JW: I imagine that your legal name is not really “Stoney”... SC: No, my name is Curtis. Here’s how the Stoney name came about: when I started the Stoney Curtis Band, it was myself and a guy named Eric Mitchell (he was the singer). It was the early 1990’s and we were writing songs together and he was really good. We pretty much just did Blues covers and were coming up with song ideas on the side. I really wanted to put together a Blues band, that was the goal. Eric was the one who came up with the name “Stoney Curtis''. He loved The Flintstones and specifically, he loved Tony Curtis on the
SC: I love cannabis for creative purposes. When I’m writing songs or working on riffs, I like to be in the control room (of the studio) by myself at night, take a few little hits, play my guitar and let it all come together. I think cannabis relaxes me but it also opens up channels that, in our normal everyday lives, we tend to suppress or be closed off to. I’m a sativa and an indica fan- I find benefit and enjoyment from both. Weed connects us to the Universe in a unique way. JW: Cannabis can definitely enhance the creative process. Some people find more benefit in partaking as a means of channeling their creativity when they aren’t expected to be poised, present or in a more rigid situation. SC: Absolutely. For me, I’m also a music producer and engineer. So if I know I’m

going to be working on an important session with a client in the studio, I’m not going to smoke before I set up that session. When I’m working in that sense, I want to have full mental awareness and be prepared to react to anything that comes up. But when it’s time for me to be creative and relax into my artistic phase, now I can just let it go and not be the business guy; I can feel free to partake and not be worried about all the pertinent details. I also love cannabis for its medicinal value. I have a lot of pain in my arms, my shoulders, my hands and my knees from the repetitive motion of playing the guitar for so many years. Cannabis definitely helps! It helps put me in a good mood, be creative and ease my tensions- what’s not to love? I hear things better after I’ve consumed cannabis, too. It puts me into a relaxed state where I can pick up subtleties of music and it elevates my experience, all around. JW: What’s your favorite way to consume cannabis? SC: I like a good preroll. Flower is my preference. Concentrates are great, but I’m a flower guy, for sure. I haven’t smoked cigarettes for 20 years or more, but I do like the ritual and the experience of holding a joint in my hand and smoking it. Pipes and bongs are great too because the smoke is cleaner and smoother but there’s something about a preroll that gets me every time. Pop into a dispensary and for $8-$10, you can get yourself a great preroll; it’s cheaper than a cocktail! I also just started to experiment with edibles. For awhile, the effect that the edibles would have on me would put me into a massive body sedation, and that’s not the experience that I was looking for; it would make me not want to work or play the guitar. It would knock me out. But recently
a friend of mine who suffers from chronic pain and was able to get off of pharmaceutical medications turned me on to dispensary-bought edibles and it opened my eyes to a whole new experience. We stopped into a dispensary, picked up some edibles and I popped two 10mg gummies… JW: What’s 20mg to Stoney Curtis, right?! No big thing! SC: That’s right! I’m a pro. Ha! So after a while, we were hanging out at Red Rock, hiking around, listening to music and it really gave me an enlightening experience. I was instantly in a great mood and felt motivated to be social and enjoy myself. I’m also really enjoying the advantage of being able to consume edibles discreetlyon a plane, at a concert, out to dinner with friends, etc. It’s a nice option. I love seeing concerts this way; it helps me be in the moment and hear things so vividly. JW: Do you feel as if the excitement or taboo nature of cannabis consumption has worn off with recreational legalization and being able to purchase cannabis so easily? SC: I do, a bit. Even after dispensaries came to be and legalization passed here in Nevada, I mean, I’m old school. I still liked it the old fashioned way and would get my flower from underground sources. But
with time, we all came to see that there are some really great products out there and dispensaries aren’t evil. They’re practically like convenience stores these days! JW: That’s true. The ease of availability has made cannabis that much more acceptable and enticing… SC: To be honest, I never got into any hard drugs at all. I had tried certain things and realized, eh, those things weren’t for me, so I moved on. Being a child of the 1970’s growing up in a city like Chicago, I had certainly seen my fair share of devastation at the hands of addiction and hard drugs, and it was enough to scare me and confirm that I was not interested in being one of those statistics. Cannabis was always the thing that I was drawn to when it came to recreational use. When the Stoney Curtis Band was touring Europe, one of my favorite things was to visit Holland and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, eat a chocolate muffin and smoke a joint in a cafe! What’s better than that? I’m looking forward to the consumption lounges opening up here in Vegas soon,

too. There’s a whole cultural experience around cannabis. JW: Getting back to music, who would you list as some of your most inspirational musical influences? SC: Definitely the Blues, as well as bands like KISS, and performers like Elton John and Alice Cooper who brought the theatrics and the wild, production stage shows and diverse musical elements. Being from Chicago growing up in the 1970’s and 1980’s, it was really a blue collar, working class, middle class town full of Blues and Hard Rock influences. That’s what I grew up on. At the end of the day, the Stoney Curtis Band is Blues-based, Hard Rock delivered in a Rock ‘N Roll style. Really, as many of the great bands were. I would see Buddy Guy a lot and he was great, but there’s also a few musicians who I don’t think are talked about enough, who were huge influences on me: Luther Allison and Son Seals. I remember going to see Son Seals when I was just a young kid and had no business hangin’ out in a few of those old Blues clubs in the city, and I was blown away! To be honest though, I’m also

influenced by the people around me right here in Las Vegas, we’re surrounded by incredible talent here. I get influenced by people like Jason Walker (who I love to hear play), and so many other fantastic players. JW: Las Vegas is actually a fairly small town and the music community is pretty small, as well. If you’re fortunate enough to be part of it, you can get a lot of inspiration from the musicians here. SC: That’s true! And now, so many of the well known musicians have migrated here and become residents like Sebastian Bach, Stephen Pearcy, Phil Lewis, Eric Singer, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer, Bruce Kulick and his wife (who are such nice people). But at the end of the day, I’ve been lighting Vegas up for 20 years, performing live in the local clubs! Guys like me, Scott Rhiner, Chris Tofield and some of the guys who came before us here, they have that local Blues sound. So I consider myself a big part of the local sound and scene. Count’s 77, Jerry Lopez, Jason Walker, The Moanin’ Blacksnakes and others are a
part of the reason why people come here and go “Whoa!!! The Vegas music scene is incredible!” I feel a pride about Las Vegas; I was able to perform here for years and get so much out of it. And I still do. Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the World, so if you’re fortunate enough to be known here, you’re likely to be appreciated and beloved, everywhere. This is my town now and I’m not going anywhere anytime soon! The Count band (Count’s 77) is doing great and there’s a new record coming from them soon. We've been playing a lot of shows. Mike Varney and I are working on a new Stoney Curtis Band album and I’m looking forward to the future. JW: When did you first start working with Mike Varney? SC: 2004, I was still living out of state (California) but I was coming here every other week to play at The Sand Dollar. When I first began performing at Sand Dollar, back in those days, the set was from 2:30 to 5:30am. It would go all night. Mike had heard about me from a local Las Vegas guy named Gary. Gary would talk me up a lot and one night, Mike overheard

MUSIC SPOTLIGHT him talking about this Blues guitar player, Stoney Curtis. Mike showed up at The Sand Dollar just as I was pulling into the parking lot, blasting Michael Schenker and Kelly Keeling performing on this album in my truck, which was a Shrapnel Records album that Mike Varney produced. Mike Varney, who was now standing in the parking lot of The Sand Dollar at 2 o’clock in the morning, waiting to meet me and listen to me play. Talk about a crazy coincidence! Mike watched my show, we got acquainted and the rest is history. We made a great connection and ended up working together down the road. Now, Mike is one of my dearest friends and most respected colleagues. JW: What have you been working on musically and which organizations do you lend your talent to? SC: Stoney Curtis Band, Count’s 77, I help put together and produce “KISS Night in Las Vegas” which is a local charity fundraiser event that we hold annually to raise money for local schools music programs. We produce songs and a compilation album with collaborative performances from local musicians doing KISS songs, which is a great way to work with a ton of talented folks, but also, to offer something that people can buy to support the charity. JW: Have you worked with any other influential projects? SC: Well over the years I have worked extensively with Mike Varney (Shrapnel Records) and I work pretty much everyday at The Count’s Desert Moon Studios which is a premier recording studio in Las Vegas. I produce and engineer studio sessions. I love creating music but I love helping people to create music, too. I’ve been fortunate to have AJ McCready and Bruce Boulliet (engineers) help guide me and really help me in my process, it’s been great. I co-wrote and produced the John Zito Band album which is really good. I just had the opportunity to perform at the M3 Rock Festival with the Count band, and that was great. We’re not really known for doing large Rock festivals, but fans of The
Count and his various projects were really blown away by our performance. It was a good opportunity to get out there in front of an audience and show them that we’re a real Rock ‘N Roll band. We got a standing ovation at the show and there has been so much positive feedback on social media from attendees. JW: That’s the thing about Danny Koker, he walks the walk, he doesn’t just talk the talk. He really is a talented guy and even though so many know him from Counting Cars and Count’s Kustoms or his music club, Count’s Vamp’d, he can bring the house down with his live band, as well… SC: Danny was (and is) a local celebrity for a long time, too. But now it’s at a whole other level. JW:What are some of your favorite local venues? SC: I started performing at The Sand Dollar Lounge in 1999, so I always list it as one of my favorites. I also play at Count’s Vamp’d a lot and it’s definitely home to me. And the way Danny and Korie Koker run that venue and treat the bands that perform there is unmatched; they’re the most genuine people. Backstage Bar & Billiards is another great stage in town, House of Blues is awesome, too. There are so many good ones. JW: Do you change up your shows and curate your live performances for the various venues? Or are your shows similar from stage to stage? SC: It can vary. If I’m playing at Vamp’d, it’s usually a straight Rock show, so it’s going to be an hour or so, maybe I do a few sets. For over 20 years, I’ve really gotten away with playing my own shit. My own original music. I pop in some cover songs, too. I’ve always kind of stuck to my guns- I do me. I do my own thing. At venues like The Sand Dollar, I get to spread out the set a bit too, because the sets are longer, I will play for 4 hours or so. And that’s the great thing about a “power trio”- me,
Barry Barnes and Shon McKee, we get to experiment and vamp a lot. It’s a lot of freedom. Count’s 77 has 6 members and it’s a lot more to contend with musically, but when it’s cookin’, it’s a freight train and it sounds so good to have all of those other instruments and parts. We put on a show, it’s not just about performing 3-4 minute songs. We’re from Las Vegas, we’re a show band. When we go out of town on tours and for live performances, we don’t half ass it. We’re going to put on a great show as we’re representing our town, the Entertainment Capital, Las Vegas. But we’re also representing the Count’s brand too- so there’s a level of professionalism and quality that we need to adhere to. We always go out there on stage and do our best to bring it, and I hope that resonates with the audience. JW: Anything cool on the horizon for your projects? SC: Stoney Curtis Band will be back in the Midwest doing some stuff, Count’s 77 is going to be all over the country touring and performing, there’s a new Stoney Curtis album hopefully done soon, a new Count’s 77 album done soon, we have a film coming out soon, we have 2 singles (“Day After Day” and “Vehicle”) being released soon. Michelle Adams is working on a documentary on Stoney Curtis called, “For The Love of Blues and Rock N Roll”- it’s a Rockumentary about the journey. So there’s a lot on the horizon. If you had to give advice to a new budtender or someone looking to be a budtender, what would it be?
ASHLEY CREWS Budtender at EXHALE Ashley Crews is a lover of all plants but cannabis holds a special place in her heart. Her enthusiasm for cannabis is what led her to her budtender role at Exhale Dispensary. Her informative consultations and superb customer service is what keeps her regulars coming back. What made you want to join the cannabis industry and what was your first industry job? I grew up in Florida where cannabis is still illegal and extremely frowned upon. I became interested in budtending once I started consuming more and learning the medicinal value of cannabis. I wanted to teach and help others understand why cannabis is life changing. Have your views/thoughts about cannabis changed since becoming a budtender? Definitely! Cannabis is special and sacred to me now. I no longer use cannabis just to “get high” but as a part of my overall wellness routine to help keep my mind and body balanced. What’s the most satisfying part of budtending? I get to meet so many amazing like minded people! We’re coming together from all backgrounds to share the love we have for the plant and the culture. What’s your favorite topic you like to educate patients on? Terpenes and extraction. It’s important for me to teach my patients about extraction processes and how terpenes have such a big impact on the type of high or medicinal effect they’re experiencing. With so many brands out there hopefully I can help

Education and confidence. Make sure to educate yourself on the brands you’re selling and sample them. Having confidence will help you sell anything. That comes naturally when you’re educated on the product and enjoy what you do. How do you stay up to date and informed on new products? I always try to catch budtender training for new products. It’s also really helpful to seek out brand ambassadors to get their knowledge. Of course I do my own independent research online too. What’s your favorite way to consume? Flower will always have a special place in my heart, something about the smell and the practice of smoking bud will always be my favorite. I consume all ways to keep my tolerance low. I also love high terpene tasty wax and yummy edibles! Do you prefer a high THC content or a really good terpene profile? I NEED a really good terpene profile. I don’t buy products without good quality terpenes. It’s the most important thing about cannabis to me. High THC and high terpenes is the ultimate goal. What have you been smoking on? I am stuck on high terpinolene strains. Pineapple Fanta from Nature's Chemistry, Silver Hawks Haze from GT Flowers. And, Camp Rosin of course!

JOSHUE CLINE Budtender at PLANET 13 Josh Cline is one of the happiest budtenders you’ll come across. He’s always looking to lend a helping hand and he does it with a smile on his face. His wealth of cannabis knowledge and infectious positive energy is what has propelled him in the cannabis industry. You can find Josh doing his thing at Planet 13. What made you want to join the cannabis industry and what was your first industry job? I moved to Las Vegas from Charlotte, NC to pursue my passion for cannabis. My goal was to inform and teach others that this lovely plant is here to help with medical needs, mental state, and of course bring people together. The first industry job I had was a delivery driver for Planet 13. Now, I’m a budtender and love every day of work! Have your views/thoughts about cannabis changed since becoming a budtender? It’s more than just “getting high” nowadays. I used cannabis for recreational purposes before, but now being in the industry has helped me to use cannabis for my day to day needs in life. What’s the most satisfying part of budtending? Being able to educate new and everyday users about terpenes, CBD:THC ratios, Rick Simpson Oil…the list goes on! They really express how much they appreciate the time and effort I put into my passion and it feels like I’m making a difference! What’s your favorite topic you like to educate patients on? I love educating guests on terpenes. Seeing the
lightbulb go off in their heads really makes me happy. When I explain how Linalool (one of my favorite terpenes) helps alleviate stress and is naturally derived from lavender they get this itch to want to learn about terpenes so they know how these products will make them feel. If you had to give advice to a new budtender or someone looking to be a budtender, what would it be? Be patient and ask questions. The industry is very competitive so take your time, because all good things come to those who wait. Learn anything and everything you can and ask questions. There is never a stupid question! How do you stay up to date and informed on new products? Usually when I get to work I’ll walk the sales floor to get a feel of what’s new and up to date. We have a lot of access to training documents from vendors and fellow coworkers which helps a bunch. What’s your favorite way to consume? Flower Power! I absolutely love to roll joints or blunts, I look at it as a form of art. Rolling up a perfect joint after a long day of work or life in general is always my move. Do you prefer a high THC content or a really good terpene profile? I prefer a blend of both. High THC for me doesn’t make the effects last as long, but low terpenes don’t get a ton of flavor. I need the best of both worlds! What have you been smoking on? At the moment I’m currently smoking on smoke Kush Cookies flower by Virtue and Pineapple Fanta from Nature's Chemistry. Both are tasty and pack a punch!

A DISCUSSION ON LOUNGE REGULATIONS WITH LAYKE MARTIN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE NEVADA CANNABIS ASSOCIATION As I’ve covered extensively over most of the past year, cannabis consumption lounges will soon be a reality in both the city of Las Vegas as well as the greater Silver State. The millions of tourists that visit this desert oasis every year will finally have a place to both safely and legally consume a variety of cannabis products. It will be a much needed expansion into a booming state industry that already employs approximately 23,000 people and thousands more through ancillary employment. Social equity and other much needed diversity measures were added to the consumption lounge-legalizing Assembly Bill 341. This legislation, partly thanks to the tireless activism from organizations directly from communities impacted by the drug war, will hopefully lead to the inclusion of individuals from those exact communities. Those excluded from the legal industry for a variety of reasons will finally have a mostly equal opportunity in an industry they’ve been prohibited from in droves. It’ll be a riveting new chapter for the Nevada cannabis industry and an exciting new branch of Las Vegas’ endlessly expanding tree of tourists’ experience opportunities. Whereas the millions of visiting cannabis consumers without a private place to consume had to risk a hotel smoking fine or a public consumption ticket, that crowd now won’t have to risk facing any penalties and can instead support local businesses. I’ve spent the last year covering how beneficial and opportunistic that social equity’s inclusion into the consumption lounge program could become. It’s important to also discuss the economic and employment possibilities that come with AB 341’s legislation along with how stable a consumption lounge market could be in a state with as large of a cannabis industry as Nevada does.

A lifelong native of Nevada, Nevada Cannabis Association (formerly Nevada Dispensary Association) Executive Director and UNLV law professor Layke Martin is well-versed in both the Nevadan business market and business law as a whole. As Executive Director of an organization with members from the most well-known dispensaries and cultivators as well as ancillary cannabis companies in Nevada, Martin wears many hats and fulfills many duties on behalf of the NCA. They provide services to the statewide industry of arguably the fastest growing industry in the country. “As the NCA’s Executive Director, I coordinate the association’s policy agenda,” described Martin, “conduct outreach with policymakers, media, and community organizations, create educational resources for the industry, and provide member services such as regular policy updates and analysis.” In the ever-changing world of Nevada cannabis laws and regulations, it’s beneficial to the NCA to have a lawyer as esteemed as Martin as Executive Director. Before taking the role she has with the organization, Martin served as Assistant Dean for External Relations at UNLV’s Boyd School of Law and teaches at UNLV’s School of Public Policy and Leadership. The Nevada State Bar awarded her Young Lawyer of the Year Award in 2015 and served on the Board of the National Association for Law Placement from 2015-2017 as well as the 2015-2016 Chair of the Young Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Nevada. “The NCA concentrates its efforts on cannabis industry advocacy, government affairs, public relations, and developing training resources to promote compliance and safety.” Martin said. Given her extensive experience in law and policy, Martin was an obvious choice to fill
a seat on a committee when the Cannabis Compliance Board formed the various committees that would discuss ideal regulations for the eventual consumption lounges. In particular, Martin would serve on the Market Stability Committee. As opposed to the very social reformheavy operations of the Social Equity and Diversity Committee, the Market Stability Committee focuses on the economic and logistical possibilities of the consumption lounges. In a state with legal cannabis for almost half a decade now and a tourism industry that is unmatched throughout the world, the Market Stability Committee was formed to realistically envision and discuss how a cannabis consumption lounge program would operate in such a state. Interestingly, Martin explained that unlike the other committees that have held public meetings, the Market Stability Committee hasn’t yet held public meetings and will likely take more of a consultory role in the discussion and creation of consumption lounge regulations. “I anticipate that we will meet in the future to make recommendations based on a study that the CCB plans to conduct assessing supply and demand in the Nevada market before opening up any new non-lounge licensing rounds.” Martin said. Even if the committee hasn’t technically met, Martin joins many equally qualified professionals in the subjects of cannabis, the Nevada economy and business planning. Such examples include Planning Manager for Clark County Department of Comprehensive Planning Sami Real and General Manager of Wallflower Cannabis House James Hammer. Unlike their scandal-ridden regulatory predecessors notorious for secrecy and exclusion of anyone not from the

top echelons of Las Vegas society, it’s evident that the Cannabis Compliance Board is making a multifaceted effort into including the voices and participation of a wide array of qualified individuals related to the Nevada cannabis industry and accompanying community of advocates. This objective sentiment is one that Martin agrees with. “What’s been interesting about the regulatory drafting process so far has been how the CCB has sought and incorporated input from experts and stakeholders. Everyone is working together to try and get these regulations right.” As this is an entirely new frontier for the Nevada cannabis industry, Martin believes that there will inevitably be some changes that come to the consumption lounge regulations and operations as the program expands and adapts. “There will certainly be changes and tweaks down the road. After all, they are creating an entirely new type of highly-regulated business from the ground up. It has been encouraging so far to see how the industry’s input has been received and incorporated as the regulations are developed.” Similar to Assemblyman Steve Yeager and Cameron Miller, Martin is convinced in the success of the eventual consumption lounge program in Nevada. Martin believes that Nevada’s consumption lounge industry could serve as a model for other states. As Las Vegas is the largest tourist destination in the world that isn’t the magically totalitarian and mouse-led kingdom in Orlando that I once worked for, overall tourism to Sin City will almost certainly increase when the lounges open. Las Vegas has proven to showcase how highly lucrative and popular that adult industries and all their ancillary businesses truly are. The hopefully
opened soon consumption lounges will only additionally prove that point to a number of states deadset on staying prohibitionist strongholds contrary to the beliefs of their constituents. “The regulatory framework currently gives our lounge owners flexibility in how the individual lounges will look and the
type of experience they offer.” Martin explained. “You could envision a lounge that operates like a tasting room at a winery where guests can learn about and try new products, or a painting and cannabis studio, a comedy club, or a fine dining experience.”

Northern Nevada Art Spotlight on Kristin Inman Reno native Kristin Inman has dabbled in art since the age of 5. The class room was her grandmother’s dining room table and her classmates were her cousins. Millie Fast, a retired home economics teacher at Sparks High, taught them the basics in oils, pastels, colored pencils and watercolor. Often a Bob Ross tutorial was playing in the background. It wasn’t a bad way to spend a summer. From there, she took silk screening in middle school, dabbled in video broadcasting in high school, and took graphic design at Truckee Meadows Community College. But when the small amount of money her parents managed to set aside for college ran out, it was time to decide whether to take out a student loan and continue school or get a job. That is when she fell in love with another art form, the art of bartending! From sports and craft bars to night clubs and local dive bars, it was bartending at her favorite ski resort Timbers at Mt. Rose in Tahoe where her love of beer and art came together. While bartending paid the bills, she always continued her art. Acrylics being her most comfortable painting style, she later found alcohol ink painting and started an Instagram account of her journey with this new medium. Jeremy Warren from Revision Brewing in Sparks stumbled across

her account and asked if she would be interested in having some of her art featured on Revision’s beer labels. A dream come true! Her art on the cans of one of her favorite local breweries. The first being “Whole Lotta Ruckus” and the second “Mystic Topaz.” Kristin has since partnered with other local artists in the Lake Tahoe area. Her custom cannabis leaf panels were cut by Tahoe Wood Company and she has displayed her art at the local Wyld Markets in South Reno. Northern Nevada Music Spotlight on Tristan Selzler Tristan Selzler is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator based in Reno, Nevada. Originally from San Jose, California, Selzler is an 18 year veteran in the Reno/Tahoe music scene, and has performed regionally and abroad, notably in New Orleans, Louisiana, San Francisco, and Tokyo, as well as Kyoto, Japan. With a focus on original instrumental composition, his main influences are Black American Musics including jazz, rock and roll, blues and hip hop. Selzler founded the Reno Jazz Syndicate in 2006, a collective of musicians based out of the University of Nevada, Reno, where he earned a B.M and and M.A. in music and jazz studies. This group features ensembles ranging from duos and trios, to a 16 piece jazz orchestra, and focuses on
original music, collaborative improvisation and high energy performances. Tristan teaches piano and music appreciation at Western Nevada College in Carson City, and maintains a small private instruction studio. Selzler plays in several Reno-based bands including Ska Rocksteady legends Keyser Soze, who are performing October 14th at Great Basin Brewery in Sparks, Rock icons Moondog Matinee, who recently performed at the Off-Beat Festival at The Alpine Reno, and Drinking With Clowns, a Cumbia/ Reggaeton group whose performance is influenced by the music of Mexico, Columbia, and Paraguay.

Cannabis and music go together like peanut butter and jelly. Whether it's obvious like Rick James, ‘Mary Jane’, or more subtle like the Beatles song ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’, written after Paul McCartney was first introduced to cannabis, there has always been a connection between cannabis and music. Some may think music is just an integral part of “stoner culture,” but there is a reason why music sounds so good when we are high. Anecdotal research has been done explaining some reasoning as to why music sounds so good after we partake in our favorite strains. A study in the 1970’s found cannabis altered our perception of sound frequency and intensity. When individuals ingested cannabis, they were able to perceive sounds at the very top of our hearing range, around 6,000Hz. Participants in the study were able to hear the music more clearly and enjoyed a wider range of music, compared to those who did not use cannabis. The study also found users had a greater speech perception allowing them to easily distinguish the words from the background music. A brain mapping study found cannabis increases the parietal area of the brain identified in playing a role in problem solving. Increasing this area of the brain leads to incredibly efficient information processing. This means after using cannabis we comprehend music at a higher level of thought we would normally. Additionally, cannabis increases the activity in the right brain hemisphere associated with emotional, intuitive, and imaginative functions. Have you ever smoked a joint and listened to a song, feeling like you are hearing it for the first time, maybe flooded with emotions and feeling the creativity with each word? That’s because of cannabis increasing our perceptions! Cannabis also slows our perception of time, letting us really be in the moment. For decades cannabis has been a part of music culture, and for good reason! It allows writers, performers, and listeners to really absorb the music like never before. All genres have a hand in cannabis culture. In the 1920’s jazz musicians used cannabis to really “feel their music,” and commonly sold patrons ``jazz cigarettes,” or cannabis joints, in the Jazz Clubs. Originating in New Orleans, the practice quickly swept across the nation. Heavy metal has roots to cannabis in many songs. One leading the way was Black Sabbath's 1971 hit ‘Sweet Leaf’ being the first song to play a loop of someone coughing from a heavy joint rip. Reggae originated in Jamaica stemming from the Rastafarian religion where cannabis is sacred. Bob Marley led the way with many others speaking of the need for legalization. Rap is a genre we often see cannabis portrayed in. In fact, a study in 2018 found

half of all rap music videos had vaping or smoking featured. Snoop Dogg is a proud supporter of cannabis and was even seen hitting a joint when getting ready to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show! It may not surprise you that 1.3% of all rap music mentions Mary Jane, but did you know country music has them beat at 1.6%? That’s right, the country genre is filled with cannabis culture from the infamous Willie Nelson to Kasey Musgraves. Many mention the wonderful plant and accredit it to their creativity behind writing their music. Cannabis and music have been a pair for over 100 years allowing users to experience music on a heightened level. Cannabis opens our minds in ways needed to grasp the imagination and creativity of the performer and allows us to truly hear the music. DAILY DOSE of Persecution Ten years a cannabis patient, ten years in judgement Ten years ago, in October, 2012, the day the ultrasound technician looked at my oncologist and said, “It must be a technical error,” was the day that changed my life forever. Healthwise, for the good, but the persecution that followed would be a battle with ignorance I’m still fighting ten years later. I use the word ignorance in its true sense of the word, not to belittle anyone. Ignorance is ignoring the truth. But, if the truth is hidden and distorted, it’s not their fault. The fault lies at the feet of the distractor. The larger question is, why are they distracting and to what end? My Truth, My Cross to Bear I was in mainstream media and had been for ten years prior to using cannabis oil to treat Lobular Carcinoma, a rare, spider-web-like-mass in my right breast. My story has been told many times, but the part of my backstory I haven’t written about includes the judgment and persecution felt and received from every aspect of my life ever since. When I was in mainstream media I was respected and trusted. Today might be different, as media in general has been tainted as biased - but, for the most part, as a features writer documenting human interest stories; and a documentarian, field and segment producer from television prior, my work was a source of great pride for me - with a livable income. But, from the minute the ultrasound showed that the mass in my breast was gone, with that first sentence from the technician showing disbelief, my unchosen path of persecution was set before me.

If I had been a different person I may have kept it to myself, aware of the reality and ramifications it would have on my career and my pocketbook - but, I am my mother’s daughter, and she did not sit on her hands when there was something or someone to defend. Persecution is Personal When I was in-house as the lead features writer for the Times-Standard in Eureka, in Northern California, I had the opportunity to talk with then District Attorney, Paul Gallegos, about why cannabis farms and patients under the legal medical laws in California were still being raided and sentenced under Federal jurisdiction in Humboldt County. His reply was stunning, as he implicated friends, family, neighbors and exes as culprits in reporting cannabis grows and patients. Humans hating on humans was the main reason raids and persecution still persisted in the cannabis capital of the world. To give another perspective, here I was from mainstream media, with weed treating cancer, no longer on pharma, with the knowledge that thousands of people are languishing in prison for a plant. My own personal persecution began quickly in just about every aspect of my life, including my own doctor at the time doubting me. I soon found a new doctor who not only listened to me, but learned through observing my healing to feel comfortable enough to talk to her patients about their own cannabis use. Other discrimination soon followed, including the Automobile Club of America Assoc (AAA) rejecting the renewal of my longtime life insurance policy. As a
single mother, wishing to leave something behind for her child, this was a huge blow. My ex and I separated, then parted. During the hearing for support, he too played the drug card, in an effort to discredit me. This forced me to present a photo of him hitting a four foot long joint at 4:20 during a High Times Cup I was covering. All that pain and embarrassment for a plant that should have never been prohibited in the first place. Technical Errors Abound The letter sent to me after my six month follow-up mammogram/ultrasound from Humboldt Radiology stated that there was indeed a large area of scar tissue where the mass once was and that it must have been from “a prior surgery,” even though I’ve never had surgery in either breast before or since. Because I was never diagnosed, with the mass gone in two and a half months before a biopsy could be done, I’m now part of a 30 years study with the American Cancer Society on Prevention. After the first questionnaire only asked if I “smoked marijuana,” I wrote the director, who then corresponded with me directly, adding intelligent questions on using cannabis as medicine, ingesting, and more, per my request to subsequent questionnaires. Healer Not Dealer I moved down to Baja California, giving me the financial freedom to continue to do this work full-time. The cute little cottage on the beach I first moved into was awesome at $350 a month, but it came with a conservative neighbor in his 70s, who immediately began gossiping in
the community that I was a drug dealer. It’s true, I had little old ladies lining up at my door on apothecary days picking up salve, tinctures, and infused honey for pain, sleep, and more. Guilty as charged. My poor neighbors became confused, though, as shortly after I moved in I posted photos of myself with Tommy Chong at his home in Los Angeles. Is she a drug dealer for Tommy Chong? Is she a drug-runner, a mule? The following month I posted photos of myself, again, with Melissa Etheridge, at her home in Los Angeles. It was enough to drive the gossip mongers mad. And it’s important to note, those same little old ladies who picked up the remedies, didn’t invite me to their parties or gatherings. I was helping them, but they didn’t necessarily want to be seen with me. Far cry from my days in mainstream media, when I would have been invited as a special guest. Since then, I’ve had every landlord and many neighbors judge me and try to play the drug card, to no avail. I say, bring it on. If anything happens to me it’s an international story in the cannabis space, and just another educating moment of advocacy for the plant. The Shape of the Drug Card Playing the drug card is a one-size fits all type of deal, and easy due to the decades long negative stigma. I get it. The U.S. Government did an excellent job of demonizing a plant that can heal humans. Well played. It’s a no-brainer to judge, as the “stoner jokes” are already there. It’s common knowledge that we are stupid, slow, easily distracted, and unproductive. No matter that I must smoke a bit to medicate to focus to write, and that I smoked all through the writing of this piece - my copy
and my conscience is clean. On another note, take away the psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabis is just another boring beneficial plant no one will give a shit about. And to be fair, it’s not the plant’s fault either. We as a species upped the THC to the heights we have today. We alone caused the controversy. The thing is, if the cancer didn’t go away, and if I hadn’t also done away with upwards of ten pharmaceuticals and supplements for myriad ailments and disorders at the same time, I might not have fully believed in the plant enough myself to do this work.. If it was all a lie - if my entire body of work is based on misinformation and exaggerations about the plant and its benefits, then that would make me a psychopath, right? How could I write about all these miraculous stories of healing for all these years if it wasn’t true unless I was completely delusional? And what of the patients I’ve interviewed all these years who have been helped? Are they all lying about the efficacy of the plant? What would the motive be just to feel better? After ten years my list of questions is still longer than the truth I already know.

It’s a niche remedy right now, at best, and we who know about its healing powers (and workable dosing) are privileged in this knowledge. I’ve also learned that you can’t ask or expect the masses to fully educate themselves until the U.S. Federal Government acknowledges the medicinal benefits of cannabis as a superfood, and removes it from Schedule 1, as a substance with no medicinal value. Are we martyrs in the fight? I can only speak for myself and say, this work is a calling. I had no choice. I already had a voice and a pen, and I know nothing happens without a reason. Passing the Test
The Proper Use of Aseptic Technique Every cannabis product that hits the shelves for public consumption requires safety testing. In the State of Nevada, safety testing includes evaluation for pesticides, foreign matter, heavy metals, mycotoxins, water activity, moisture content, residual solvents, and microbiological contamination. Cannabinoid and terpene testing is also mandatory in Nevada, but they are considered "potency testing". One of the most common sources of product safety testing failure is microbial contamination. More specifically, yeast, mold and aspergillus are a big problem in Nevada. Microorganisms including aspergillus found in their natural environment typically exist with other microorganisms and not as a single species. A small sample of soil is likely to contain many different types of bacteria, yeast, and molds. Laboratories in Nevada test for the types that are most likely to be harmful to people. Because Aspergilloses is a dangerous aspergillus causing disease, laboratories have strict microbial testing requirements when it comes to those pesky nuisances. Aspergillus is a fungi. It is typically found in soil, on plant matter, and on people. It’s usually airborne and spreads through spores carried by air movement. However, if people are going from plant to plant, they can transmit it from plant to plant. It can be inhaled and somebody who is carrying it on their body can also infect plants. People carrying dust from household spores can also pass it from plant to plant. Aspergillus spores are tiny, allowing them to travel great distances in the air. If those spores are already in the soil or already on one plant, it can be spread anywhere the air blows it. Coliforms, salmonella and Enterobacteriaceae (gram negative bacteria) are also mandatory tests in Nevada and usually come from feces. Moreover, the ideal conditions for mold, yeast and other destructive fungi are exactly what you have in an indoor cultivation including heat, humidity and nutrients such as nitrogen. Decaying plant matter (plant matter that has been sitting around to rot, get moist, or pile up; be it on the floor or in corners or in air ducts or in reservoirs or anywhere that plant matter

can accumulate) would be a ground zero for aspergillus and other mold and yeast spores to cause contamination. The cannabis flower, leaves, roots, equipment as well as surfaces are all prone to microbial contamination. Interestingly, the hotter months exacerbate the spread of one species of aspergillus (fumigatus) because warmer weather causes a natural incubation and the perfect environment for growth. If warm weather is combined with moisture, the fungi will spread exponentially. Because mold and aspergillus grow so easily, many people breathe airborne aspergillus spores regularly. Contamination in your grow room can occur at growth, harvest, extraction, or even storage. To keep people and agricultural products safe from microbial contamination, it is important for growers to keep a comprehensive integrated management regiment, including: • Aseptic Technique • Proper PPE use • Environmental control management • Avoiding moisture and condensation on susceptible surfaces Some states screen for Total Yeast and Mold (TYM) as an indicator for the presence of yeast and mold in cannabis. While it is an indicator, this test cannot differentiate between pathogenic and non-pathogenic yeast and mold. Even though some states prefer the total yeast mold route as a broader screening method, other states choose to specifically screen for four pathogenic aspergillus species that are very difficult to identify on a TYM agar plate morphologically. In a laboratory setting, successful testing includes several factors. The most important factors fall into this hierarchy: proper collection of the sample, proper testing procedure, and interpretation of data. Every factor is handled by a department within the laboratory and is equally important, but one thing every department has in common is that they are all responsible for keeping their respective areas safe and clean. So how do we keep the product and the lab and any cultivation or cannabis product producing site safe from contamination? “Aseptic Technique” is the answer. Prevention is

always better than mitigation for any product intended for distribution. Aseptic Technique means using practices and procedures to prevent contamination. We do this by using disinfecting solutions properly. This includes using 70% IPA followed by 10% Bleach on every surface, gloves, and instrument that would come into contact with the product being produced. IPA kills microbes after 10 seconds of contact, bleach eliminates the DNA. Why is it important to use both IPA and bleach? Safety testing includes the use of agar plates and PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) assays to determine safety of a product. Plates grow live bacteria, yeast, and mold. PCR selects specific DNA to determine the presence of certain species. The disadvantage of PCR is that unless a Free DNA Removal System is used to remove the DNA release from dead cells, PCR cannot discriminate dead from live microbes. So, how do we properly use Aseptic Technique? 1. Spray gloves with IPA and rub hands together until dry. 2. Spray gloves with bleach, rub hands together, then dry with a clean paper towel. 3. Spray IPA onto surfaces and wipe with a clean paper towel. 4. Spray bleach onto surfaces and wipe with a clean paper towel. 5. Spray spatulas and tongs with IPA and wipe with a clean paper towel. 6. Spray spatulas and tongs with bleach and wipe with a clean paper towel. 7. Spray paper towel or Kim Wipe with IPA and wipe instruments (do not spray directly onto instruments). 8. Spray paper towel or Kim Wipe with bleach and wipe instruments (do not spray directly onto instruments) One helpful tip: keep a separated clean area for all your clean tools at your station and a Dirty area to place dirty tools after use. Also work from left to right to prevent cross-contamination. If you’re not sure if something has been cleaned or if it has been contaminated, clean it anyways. If it is in the facility, clean it.

>>>>> Cannabidiol -aka- CBD Last June 2021, I covered the basics of CBD, what it’s used for, and where to find lab-tested reputable companies that use organic practices. This year, I figured that it’s time to dive into the research that has been executed in the past year since last year’s CBD issue. CBD (Cannabidiol) is considered one of the most promising therapeutic compounds today. There is tremendous potential when it comes to the benefits of treatment with CBD. Specifically Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson's disease, Epilepsy, M.S. (Multiple Sclerosis), and Neurological cancers. CBD is considered a multimodal drug, which means that it targets two or more different pathways (Ozarowski, 2021). CBD is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid (that helps reduce inflammation and pain). CBD is an antidepressant, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and even has antipsychotic effects. In recent years it has become more commonly used for the management of neurological diseases and also for mental health (Silverstro, 2020). CBD has been shown in some studies to act as an antioxidant, protect against neuronal loss, and normalizes neurogenesis. This appears to be due to the multimodal mechanism of action of CBD in the brain. CBD has also shown to be effective and safe for treatment-resistant seizures in children and has also shown as a safer treatment for the early onset of epilepsy (Golub, 2021). A study held in 2021 provided CBD’s first published evidence that it acts as an OX1R antagonist, which is the receptor that is involved in panic and anxiety. This means that it’s proven as a potential treatment for anxiety disorders, and also has the potential for use in the treatment of addictive disorders and weight loss management (Vitale,2021).

CBD is one of the many active cannabinoid compounds in hemp and cannabis plants. There is immense potential for preventative, and medicinal treatment of various diseases and disorders with CBD. Furthermore, human studied research would allow us, scientists, to evolve the future of medicine. There is much to be discovered, yet the U.S. government's regulations hold us back in alternative treatments. Even with the current research that we have access to at the tip of our fingers, there still have not been any FDA-approved oils to treat these diseases/ disorders. It is always recommended to speak with an educated professional prior to taking CBD for any medicinal treatment purposes. The first thing to ensure is that there are not any drug interactions with your current medications. Speaking to your primary caregiver is always recommended. If they are not supportive of your cannabis use, there are other doctors who can help.
