>>> DEEP ROOTS HARVEST THE ROOTS ARE TAKING HOLD AND BRANCHING OUT

ith a history grounded in the farm, the lab and the kitchen, Deep Roots Harvest is committed to delivering Nevada customers the highestquality cannabis products. The company is also committed to working with nonprofit organizations in each area it serves on issues of importance to the local community. Their deep passion for the plant and a deep commitment to Nevada is second to none. I recently sat down with Chief Operating Officer Jon Marshall to find out how the recent expansion is going and what we can expect from them in the near future. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: When did Deep Roots receive their initial licensing here in Nevada? JON MARSHALL: We applied for the first licensing round in 2014 and we opened our business in 2016 after building out our cultivation facility. Deep Roots Harvest is a vertically integrated company, meaning we have full “seed to sale” licensing, which includes a distribution license. So we have dispensary, cultivation and production capabilities. SS: The first store opened was in Mesquite, why Mesquite and is that where your cultivation is located? JM: Yes, our corporate headquarters, cultivation, extraction, kitchen facilities as well as our first dispensary are all located in Mesquite. We have additional stores in Wendover, Las Vegas, and Reno. Our initial focus was to build out our cultivation license. We started looking at the requirements for a cultivation facility and during the process, we were fortunate to get turned on to a great piece of real estate with two existing, vacant 40,000 square foot warehouses available in Mesquite that would allow us to scale up over time. We put our first investment dollars to work in the grow operations, and once that project was completed we opened our store and production at the same location shortly after. Since then, we have added a lot of additional infrastructure and moved our store into the second warehouse allowing us to quadruple its size. Cultivating in Mesquite is really no different than anywhere else since it is all indoor and climate controlled. The City of Mesquite has been

12

very supportive of the company and has allowed us to continue expanding on our site. SS: When did you launch your stores in West Wendover, North Las Vegas, Las Vegas and Reno? JM: Following the opening of our Mesquite store in 2017, we received a second dispensary license in West Wendover and opened that store in December of 2019. In 2018 we applied and won five additional licenses in the Vegas and Reno areas. Our North Las Vegas store opened in May of 2021, followed shortly after by our Reno store that opened in July. We opened our southernmost Las Vegas license on Blue Diamond Road in December of 2021 and our City of Las Vegas store opened on April 20th this year. We still have one additional store that is in the planning process and is located in Henderson. We’re hoping to get that one opened late this year or early 2023. SS: How has the industry changed since opening the first Deep Roots location? JM: The entire industry has continued to mature by leaps and bounds. Testing standards and consistency with regard to potency in products has continued to evolve and overall product quality is really top notch today. Branding and packaging have also advanced since the early days and graphics are much cleaner and more professional. Inside the stores, both the customer and our staff have become much more educated about the products. The in-store conversations about cannabis, whether for a first timer or a seasoned pro, have become much more in depth, and people have a better idea of what they want and need. After having served customers for a while now, our staff are even better equipped to provide recommendations for consumers than they could a few years ago. SS: Your largest dispensary is opening soon, tell me about that. JM: Our latest store is located in the City of Las Vegas just east of the popular community of Summerlin. We had a soft opening on April 20th and our Grand Opening is scheduled for May 18th. This new City of Las Vegas store is our flagship in Southern Nevada and is located at the intersection of Cheyenne Avenue and Jones Boulevard, slightly more than a mile from the US-95 and Cheyenne

interchange. The standalone dispensary is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and boasts nearly 8,400 square feet of retail space. The store is expected to employ as many as 40 new employees once fully staffed and is a testament to our community commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The Cheyenne store Grand Opening event will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony, a tour of the new facility, and pop ups featuring our in-house Deep Roots Harvest brands from the farm, kitchen and lab operations as well as vendors from around the state. Deep Roots Harvest leadership and local officials will be in attendance, including Ken Evans, president of the Urban Chamber of Commerce of Las Vegas.

JM: Deep Roots is active in the Nevada Cannabis Association and we enjoy working with other industry partners and the Cannabis Compliance Board to advocate for improved patient and customer access, help to create best practices for existing and new operators, and improved quality and transparency of products for end users. We advocate for responsible regulation that creates beneficial tax revenue for the State while pushing to streamline regulations and oversight so the industry isn’t suffocated with overregulation. We are also supportive of reduced penalties for minor cannabis offenses and expungement of cannabis convictions for past cannabis convictions.

SS: What discounts and/or rewards programs do your stores offer?

SS: How can readers follow you online and/or on social media?

JM: Deep Roots Harvest offers a lot of everyday deals including discounts for medical patients, veterans, and industry discounts at 15% off with valid ID. We also offer discounts to customers when they sign up for our rewards program and for first-time shoppers. Customers can earn points with every purchase that can be redeemed for a variety of cannabis and non-cannabis merchandise and products. Additionally, we feature a Deep Roots Harvest brand each month with steep discounts highlighting those products, and we constantly run random daily deals like buy one, get one free offers and category-specific sales like Wax Wednesday. We also work with our other vendors to run specials and promotions periodically throughout the month and those sales are usually accompanied by a popup or vendor-sponsored booth in stores.

JM: Our website is deeprootsharvest.com and our Instagram and Facebook @deeprootsharvestnv

SS: What are your hopes for the industry moving forward?

The Sanctuary’s 4/20 Celebration By Alexis Kouser

Popular Las Vegas dispensary, The Sanctuary, threw a massive 4/20 celebration at their downtown location hosted by Vegas Cannabis Magazine. Hundreds, possibly thousands of stoners flocked to The Sanctuary for a chance to win the two pounds of cannabis that they raffled off (between their two locations) and to take advantage of their blow-out deals on highquality cannabis products. The balloon man was a huge hit with all of the customers – his creations were amazing. Party-goers were also amazed by the glassblower, who showed smokers how their glassware is really made. The cannabis celebration also featured a DJ and food trucks (for shoppers with a case of the munchies). The line to get inside wrapped all the way around the block! All in all, the 4/20 party was a huge success! The Sanctuary will be hosting another lavish cannabis celebration to commemorate its brand-new renovation, this summer. Visit The Sanctuary today for awesome, ongoing deals. They have two locations: 2113 Las Vegas Boulevard North in North Las Vegas and 1324 S. 3rd Street in Downtown Las Vegas.

Budtender of the Month

>>>INTERVIEWS BY rocky hernandez jorrell ellis

Las Vegas

JASON MANSON Budtender at THE SOURCE Jason Manson is a budtender at The Source in Las Vegas Nevada. He moved to Las Vegas to join the cannabis industry and once he got in, seized the opportunity. His extensive knowledge about the plant has earned him a Budtender Award nomination for Dr. Cannabis. How did you get your start in the cannabis industry? I got my start volunteering at a close friend's family farm they converted to a CBG/CBD grow. High Hopes Hemp Farm in Marengo, IL. I got a chance to grow, maintain, harvest, and trim about 7800 plants. How did you fall in love with the plant? I fell in love with cannabis as an alternative to ADhD medication. I was tired of being an emotionless zombie on drugs. What were you doing before you got in the industry? Before budtending, I was a sign maker with a background in graphic arts and was a bartender. I hated serving alcohol. Are there any goals/achievements you would like to reach in the cannabis industry? To establish an education based group for budtenders and industry folks What do you enjoy most about budtending?

34

I love helping people connect to cannabis, especially when the awful stigmas of usage kept them at bay. What kind of challenges/obstacles do budtenders have to deal with that people outside the industry might not realize? The obvious challenge is to educate all the misinformation and myths regarding cannabis. To bring people up to speed on the concept of the "entourage effect". In your opinion, what’s the most common misconception about budtenders? The most common misconception is the stoner mythos. We are not all "granola hippies!" I'm very science minded and need real evidence to sway me. What’s the last product you got excited for? I'm stoked for CAMP rosin. It's the best rosin in a cart/ disposable. What’s your favorite way to consume? My favorite way to consume is concentrate and flower. What have you been smoking on? I've been smoking on Camp, GLP, and Nature's Chemistry!

AMARI LEWIS products they’re picking up and getting their feedback

Budtender at COOKIES Amari Lewis is a budtender at Cookies on Flamingo Road in Las Vegas. Getting his start in security, Amari is now a Budtender at one of the trendiest dispensaries in Vegas. How did you get your start in the cannabis industry? I actually was looking for a security job and came across an open position at The Source. After working security for a couple of years I had the urge to do something different and wanted to become a budtender How did you fall in love with the plant? I fell in love at a young age and just loved how it helped with my social anxiety and got my creativity going. It just overall, put me in a great mood What were you doing before you got in the industry? Before working in the industry I was doing warehouse work and working security part time which eventually, lead me to a security job in the cannabis industry Are there any goals/achievements you would like to reach in the cannabis industry? If I’m going to be honest I would love to have my own line of infused blunts or have my own cannabis related TV game show

What kind of challenges/obstacles do budtenders have to deal with that people outside the industry might not realize? For me, the biggest challenge is trying to convince my customers to be open-minded about trying new strains instead of what they typically smoke back home In your opinion, what’s the most common misconception about budtenders? I hope this doesn’t sound bad, but I don’t like it when people ask me for medical advice as if I’m a licensed doctor. What’s the last product you got excited for? What a great question! I think the last product I was really excited for was the CAMP disposables. Those things are absolutely amazing! What’s your favorite way to consume? I definitely love my flower rolled in a nice fat blunt, best way to consume in my opinion! What have you been smoking on? Working at Cookies, I’ve definitely been smoking and trying a bunch of different strains but the one I find myself consistently buying is CHOCLAVA…it’s sooo good!

What do you enjoy most about budtending? I really, really enjoy connecting with my customers/ patients and love getting to know what strains and

ASSEMBLYMAN CAMERON MILLER Authors Legislation to Address Costs of Licensing and More Although it’s refreshing to witness the desperately needed social equity and diversity finally being implemented into the Nevada cannabis industry via legislation, there are still countless roadblocks that aspiring canna-business owners face when they don’t have the backing of a large multi-state operator or generational wealth. For the middle class small business owner that politicians from both major parties claim to wholeheartedly support, the Nevada cannabis industry is still almost impossibly expensive to join. Despite Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto introducing a bipartisansupported bill to revamp the Small Business Loan process, each individual license in the Legal State’s most heavily regulated state is astronomically costly. For every license regardless of type, an applicant must submit a $5,000 application fee for each potential license. The license to operate a dispensary is $20,000 for the first year and $6,600 for each renewal while the cultivation license is an initial $30,000 and a $10,000 renewal fee. Laboratory and distributor licenses are both $15,000 with an annual renewal of $5,000 while a production license is $10,000 with a $3,300 renewal fee. As many of these licenses are mutually required, such as a cultivation license to grow the flower and a distribution license to send the packaged flower to a dispensary, the costs of these licenses pile up rather quickly. If an applicant is somehow successful in receiving a cannabis application among the competitive warzone of other aspiring license holders, they could expect thousands of dollars in financial penalties if they’re caught breaking any one of the detailed and strict cannabis regulations of the Silver State. Applicants are also required to have at least $250,000 in liquid assets to put into their cannabis

38

business, a number hard to come around from those who don’t make a significant salary already. Of the 330 different cannabis licenses issued in Nevada, only one dispensary and two cultivations are black-owned, and this is a national trend as well. The similar liquid assets requirements in other states are pricey for the common person, only expanding upon the roadblocks and expensive costs of effectively running a quality cultivation facility or dispensary. Seeing how almost unaffordable these costs were for people wanting to participate in small business ownership in a time that supposedly values minorityowned businesses, Assemblyman Cameron “CH” Miller spoke to this issue. Miller authored a piece of legislation in the 2021 Nevada Legislative Session that would address those costs and provide alternative ways to make canna-business ownership more readily accessible. Regardless of party affiliation, few elected officials in America can say that they’re a licensed cosmetologist. Yet before representing North Las Vegas’ 7th District, Assemblyman Miller served such a role in making sure people looked their absolute best for about a dozen years. Born in 1980 and raised entirely in Las Vegas, Miller’s roles in media and political public relations are notable. From Chief Operating Officer of Studio 11 Films and working behind the scenes with 20th Century Fox, Miller also served as Nevada Political Director for the presidential campaigns of both Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and former Texas Congressman, Beto O’Rourke. Miller says that an important Nevada elected official who served as a “catalyst” was the late Tyrone Thompson, the District 17 Assemblyman who served for six years before his unfortunate passing in May 2019. Since being elected during the 2020 election, the North Las Vegas

Assemblyman has introduced, and in some cases had successfully signed by Governor Sisolak, a number of pieces of progressive-minded legislation regarding issues that deeply and negatively impact his constituents. Passed during the 2021 Legislative Session, Assembly Bill 230 changed how defendants in the juvenile criminal justice system are assigned and whether or not those offenders are able to be assigned to the adult criminal justice system. Establishing “exclusive jurisdiction” for juvenile court systems, AB 230 will usually allow certain juvenile defendants to have their criminal proceedings happen on a more level playing field. “It was a huge accomplishment for our youth,” Miller explained, “to curve the number of them who are automatically getting put into the adult criminal justice system without any review or consideration of if they can remain in the juvenile system. We know the juvenile system is more rehabilitation-based than the adult system, so we want to retain as many of them in the juvenile space because they have better outcomes once they come back to society.” With the widespread civil and societal reforms finally being implemented across the country, Miller acknowledges and appreciates those changes. Coming from one of the countless number of families affected by the Drug War, Miller knows how overdue these changes were. “It’s a total culture shift which we are in the midst of,” said Miller. “Everything is changing and we’re stepping into a new era of what it means to live in this country and our communities. The thing about policy and legislation is that you think you’re doing something right, but you just don’t know the full impact of it until years down the road.”

As stated above, the licensing costs and fees as well as the financial requirements to enter the cannabis industry is difficult to afford for those not already with decent wealth. In the 2021 Legislative Session while Assemblyman Yeager’s consumption lounge-allowing AB 341 received most of the attention, the unfortunately not signed into law AB 322 had equally as many or even more possibilities for the further normalization and accessibility to small canna-businesses. Far more reaching than AB 341, AB 322 would have authorized the Cannabis Compliance Board to allow not just cannabis consumption but also fully permitted cannabis sales at certain events. Further, the bill would “set forth certain requirements for the issuance of a cannabis event organizer license, temporary cannabis event permit and portable cannabis vendor licenses.” Whereas AB 341 focused only on the handful of consumption lounges that will eventually open, AB 322 focused on large-scale events and the possibilities of cannabis being sold at certain events in a similar vein to beer being sold at “Life is Beautiful”. The consumption lounges will rightfully bring in millions more in revenue into the thriving Nevada cannabis industry, but the added benefit that AB 322 brings of allowing certain recreational sales and consumption at those public events themselves will increase that revenue exponentially. “The key to this bill is us being able to create an opportunity where an individual can start up and get licensed as a portable cannabis vendor and they’ll be able to set up a temporary cannabis sales and consumption space at an event. We already know that people are consuming everywhere they can and we want to create a business opportunity but also a safe space to consume.” Miller explained.

In the similarly progressive vein as the eventually Sisolak-signed AB 341, AB 322 would’ve included social equity measures as a cornerstone of the bill to promote diversity in the Nevada cannabis industry still badly needed as of the Cannabis Compliance Board’s 2021 Annual Demographic Study. “We’ve done some great things with social equity and the goals of social equity within our cannabis lounges. We’re really going after how to do this the right way and how to have equity in the industry. But one of the biggest barriers is the cost. Even if 75 percent of the lounge licenses were given to social equity applicants, the chance they’d be able to take advantage of that and whether or not they have the resources or know people with the resources is not likely in a lot of cases.” Miller describes that a “portable cannabis vendor” would be a much lower bar of entry for those aspiring canna-business owners who don’t have all the upfront costs needed immediately. “They would get whatever licenses they would need but they wouldn’t have to open a brick and mortar location and they wouldn’t need the overhead to start a lounge while also maintaining it. It’s a business model that can be very nimble and that makes it advantageous for people who don’t have the resources to get involved on a large scale. It gives them the opportunity to build something, an entrepreneurship opportunity and an opportunity to get into this industry and build generational wealth for their family legacy.” Assemblyman Miller admits that the contents of this bill wasn’t an idea from his own legislative mind. Instead, AB 322 was an idea of A’Esha Goins, a longtime activist and entrepreneur in Vegas that holds many titles relevant to the subject of social equity and diversity in the Nevada cannabis industry. Founder of Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Council (a social

equity-based organization we featured in the October 2021 issue) as well as Chair of the Social Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, a CCB-created committee to discuss the inclusion of those topics into Nevada’s consumption lounges. “She presented the idea,” recalls Miller, “we started looking at different programs that may have already been out there in different states and figuring out how this can work in Nevada. “Although, what the bill did and could do in the future is change the social equity conversation and brought attention to that while it’s great we’re reserving licenses and all these great things for social equity applicants, will that really create an opportunity for them? We have so many more social equity applicants than we’ll ever give licenses to. How else can we give them an opportunity? As the businesses continue to grow, we need to figure out how we’re going to make consumption and safe spaces at these events where people are consuming anyway. I think the industry as a whole is excited about this but we just need to figure out how to do it right.” By focusing on those communities often left out of the financially flushed zeitgeist of the legal cannabis industry, Miller sees the legislation of Assembly Bill 322 that will be carried on in other bills being an undeniable boost to diversity in Nevada cannabis. “Social equity applicants are far more likely to be people of color and so that’s going to give us an immediate influx of diversity within the space of ownership of businesses within the cannabis industry.”

CANNABIS 101 Q & A WITH DR. PEJMAN BADY DO The use of medical marijuana in the United States is becoming increasingly common and slowly gaining social acceptability. More and more patients are looking to the medicinal benefits of cannabis to treat ailments that are negatively impacting their livelihood. As such, many primary care physicians are receiving a lot of inquiries from curious patients wondering about the efficacy of medical marijuana and if it could help them. While many primary care physicians might not have the answers their patients are looking for, award-winning local emergency/family Dr. Pejman Bady DO, is well ahead of that curve, supporting the use of cannabis for medical purposes. His support of the medicinal herb resulted from a devastating diagnosis – his mother had stage 4 ovarian cancer with a life expectancy of just six months. This tragic diagnosis persuaded Dr. Bady DO to turn to alternative medicine practices, and with the help of medical marijuana, his mother survived another seven years. The whole traumatic experience prompted Dr. Bady DO to open popular local cannabis dispensaries, The Sanctuary, and become the ultimate medical cannabis connoisseur.

40

We sat down with Dr. Bady and had him answer a few burning medical marijuana questions. What are some of the ailments that medical marijuana can treat? Medical marijuana is most commonly used to manage chronic pain, especially multiple sclerosis, and nerve-related pain, anxiety, and insomnia. Keep in mind that one in five Americans suffers from chronic pain. Regulated studies and data have proven that medical marijuana can be beneficial in managing symptoms of nausea, anxiety, sleep disorders, and cachexia (severe loss of appetite). This evidence, along with the herb’s provenly powerful muscle relaxant properties, has allowed medical marijuana to become a popularized non-narcotic treatment option for cancer patients. Research from The American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute shows marijuana can help cancer patients or patients with serious illness by reducing nausea, inflammation, and pain. I recently read that the iconic Olivia Newton-John is using medical marijuana to help treat her

stage four cancer diagnosis, which is no surprise to me. It’s also effectively used to treat patients with endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and fibromyalgia. Marijuana’s use in treating glaucoma and inflammation dates all the way back to the ancient Egyptians in 1213 BC. My Parkinson's disease patients claim that cannabis’ ability to decrease their tremors is unparalleled. Recently, the first FDA-regulated study on the use of cannabis to treat PTSD in veterans produced favorable results – proving what I already knew, that cannabis can be successfully utilized to treat PTS, PTSD, and anxiety disorders. What’s the difference between CBD and THC? Medical marijuana is a holistic herbal plant made up of over 200 compounds referred to as cannabinoids. The main cannabinoid associated with cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is psychoactive. This means that it has

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

mind-altering effects, contributing to the ‘high’ patients feel when consuming marijuana products. Another well-known cannabinoid found in the marijuana plant is cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD. CBD is nonpsychoactive, meaning it does not have mind-altering effects, but it still retains therapeutic benefits. So therein lies the difference, THC is psychoactive and CBD is not. CBD has been found to help those suffering from seizure-inducing disorders resulting in the reduction and, in some cases, prevention of seizures in both patients and animals. What makes medical cannabis different from recreational cannabis? I firmly believe that the answer to the question of what differentiates medical cannabis from recreational is dependent upon the user. This is because inherently there is no major difference between the two. So it basically boils down to the user’s intention behind the consumption of cannabis. I best describe medical marijuana as the use of cannabis to treat targeted symptoms of a previously established medical diagnosis under the supervision of a medical professional. However, patients looking to minimize the psychoactive effects of cannabis while still enjoying the therapeutic benefits often opt for a strain with a higher CBD content and a lower THC content. High CBD content cannabis is scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, antipsychotic, and antianxiety properties. What’s the best way to use cannabis?

We’ve come a long way from the traditional ways of smoking marijuana, as medical marijuana is now consumed in so many different ways. There are edibles, tinctures, concentrates, and even topical lotions.

isn’t true. The point of alternative medicine practices is to consider the body as a whole and move away from man-made chemical compounds. Using synthetic cannabinoids is the antithesis of that.

Smoking remains the quickest way to reap the benefits of cannabis. This is because the marijuana infiltrates the lungs instantaneously, subsequently entering the oxygen-rich blood through the lung’s capillaries and then dispersing into the rest of the body – this whole process takes about 5 seconds.

Synthetic cannabinoids are things like spice or K2; they’re essentially manufactured chemicals. They can be sprayed on dried plants or smoked as a liquid in vaping devices. These man-made chemicals are dangerous, unregulated, and mind-altering. These non-FDA-approved synthetic drugs can affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana and can produce life-threatening effects.

A tincture is a liquid formulation with a little dropper that patients can use to put the liquid under their tongue, allowing for quicker absorption. It takes patients about 10-30 minutes to feel marijuana’s impact when using this method, and the therapeutic benefits will last about four hours. Edibles are great because patients don’t have to inhale anything, and the dosage is clear. But, finding the dosage that works for the patient can be difficult because this method of medicinal cannabis usage takes about an hour or two to kick in. However, the therapeutic benefits can last for up to 8 hours, peaking about 90 minutes after consumption. Topicals are just that – medicinal creams and lotions that patients can lather on painful, inflamed, or itchy areas of the body. This method is accompanied by little to no safety concerns! What are synthetic cannabinoids? Are they safer than cannabis? Patients are sometimes attracted to synthetic cannabinoids because they’re under the impression that they’re safer than medical marijuana, and this simply

MAY HOROSCOPES ARIES (MARCH 20 – APRIL 19) This month, the planets Venus and Jupiter shift from dreamy Pisces into Aries, creating a fire that induces passion filled momentum towards your goals. Meeting new people comes easily this month and mingling connects you with many interesting influences. If you’re in a relationship, you’ll feel especially attached to your partner and if you’re single it’s a great time to put yourself out there. It may be hard to focus on work as the weather warms and you’re feeling more impulsive. Make sure to listen to what you need and take some time off if necessary. For those days that you just can’t deal with the monotony, enjoy a handy vape like Srene’s XJ13 cartridge to keep you going. TAURUS (APRIL 19 – MAY 20) Confidence is high with the sun in your sign and it’s a great time to revisit anything you’ve been feeling stunted on. As you enjoy your comforts this month, you’ll also be challenged by the May 15 full moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio. Don’t be surprised if you’re especially emotional and questioning your security during this transit. As Venus moves into Taurus on May 28th, you’ll be back to indulging in the luxuries that make you feel good especially when it comes to pleasure. You’ll want to treat yourself to the finer things in life and share that with those that you love. We recommend spoiling yourself with a delicious live resin like Platinum Cake by Sauced. GEMINI (MAY 20 – JUNE 20) As the weather warms and the Sun moves into Gemini on May 20th, you’re feeling more aligned with the world. Many social activities fill your schedule and there are lots of opportunities for you. Everyone seems open to exploring and sharing your curiosity. Be cautious of overspending and overindulging this month. With Venus in Aries from the 2nd to the 28th you may be very impulsive with your decisions and purchases. Try to slow down and really think things through so you don’t end up investing in people or things that won’t serve you in the future. A pre roll 5 pack by SeChe will have you prepared for all your social outings while you’re getting ready to celebrate your season!

48

CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22) You might feel a bit crabby this month thanks to Mercury Retrograde occurring on the 10th and Mars in Pisces until the 22nd. Be careful not to avoid problems by sweeping them under the rug. It may feel like you just can’t catch a break. You’ll be extra protective of those you

By Margaux Hansberry

love this month which could be misinterpreted. Try not to take things personally and remember you don’t have to fix everything at once but rather step by step. Take time to think through your next moves so you don’t act out impulsively. A heavy strain like the North Cake by Nature’s Chemistry will help you sort through your emotions. LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22) Leos are feeling extra secure in their relationships this month especially when it comes to family. It’s an ideal time to spend with loved ones and if you don’t have a relationship yet, it’s the perfect time to meet others. You will tend to choose recreation over work and school, but you’ve been working so hard you deserve it. Thoughts of your future are highlighted around the full moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio on the 15th. It’s a good time to review your current foundation for the kingdom you’re working towards building. One of our favorite relaxing strains for reflection is Chem Sorbet by Redwood which is high in therapeutic terpinolene. VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22) Virgos are inspired to hit the books this month and dive into studying something that’s been on the list for a while. Work may be challenging but learning something new could help! Luckily, your patience is strong and you’re able to handle any obstacles that come your way. Spending time outside is a great way to recalibrate if things seem overwhelming. Be cautious of how you communicate with others as Mercury Retrograde on the 10th can cause some issues. If you treat others carefully and take your time in choosing your approach you should be fine. Try an indica that will slow you down like the Sin Valley OG by BaM to work through things. LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 23)

May is a powerful time for flirtatious Libras to turn up the charm and get out there. Your enchanting demeanor will attract partners who want to take care of you and make you happy. If you’re in a relationship it may feel like you are newly in love. It’s a good time to take a vacation, especially to breathe new romance into a stale relationship. Enjoy a boost of confidence that comes from being recognized by others. Be cautious of overindulging as Venus moves into Taurus on the 28th. You may want to set healthy boundaries regarding consumption and spending. We recommend bringing some CannaLean syrup with you to your social outings so you can discreetly infuse your own beverage.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21) May is an easy month for you as ideas just come and others recognize your abilities. The full moon lunar eclipse in Scorpio on the 15th may be quite emotional. It could bring up conflicting feelings of what you have vs. what you need to be stable and secure. Try a 3 pack of cherry souffle Packwoods to stay in your happy place. As the sun moves into Gemini on the 21st, you’ll have lots of opportunities to put yourself out there. Be cautious of how you say what you want to communicate because tricky Mercury Retrograde will have the potential to cause misunderstandings. Overall, there will be no problems in May and you’ll be able to enjoy the present moment. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21) May is a powerful month of personal development as you reprioritize things. You’ll have a full schedule that keeps you busy full of new information and experiences that satiates your desire for spontaneity. Although you may come off as overly sensitive in some situations, make sure to give yourself time to work through the emotions as you strategize a conclusion. With Jupiter moving into fiery Aries on the 10th, your expectations of others can come across as unrealistic. The watermelon Chillers by Deep Roots Harvest are the perfect chill pill to help you keep your cool. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19) This May will be very successful for Capricorns that will be able to focus on staying in their productivity bubbles. You may come across as self-centered to others, but this keeps you away from unnecessary drama. It is likely that you will achieve your goals swiftly with ease thanks to Mars in Aries. However, be cautious of how hard you are on yourself and staying too rigid in your beliefs. Try not to hold on to being right so you can consider the opinions of others. The energy of Gemini this month will have you bouncing around with excess energy. A regular workout routine paired with a strong concentrate like the Slurricane live resin badder by Mammoth Labs will help keep your excess energy in check. AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 18) Aquarians are up in the air this month working through conflicting feelings about the present in comparison to the past. Especially when it comes to relationships, you may be craving closure with an ex or can’t stop thinking about

what went wrong. Stay away from the rabbit hole of the past and focus on the present with a convenient disposable like the Calm Cucumber Melon 1:1 pen by City Trees. Life may feel like you’ve come to a crossroads but don’t feel like you have to choose which way to go just yet. You’ll want to make any long lasting decisions about your personal life after Mercury Retrograde ends next month. PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 20) You are a social butterfly this month as many flock to your natural charm and compassion. Your gift is making others feel safe with you. Helping others makes you feel good, and you will feel delighted to be there for them. Bring a pack of infused Space Cadet prerolls by Cannavative to share in case things get too serious. Mercury Retrograde on the 10th may stunt family plans and decisions. Just take this time to act as a support system and everything will work itself out. You may have random emotions related to the past. Keep looking forward so you’re not distracted by what you can’t change. Instead, reflect on what these feelings of the past say about your current and future relationships.

Routes of

ADMINISTRATION >>>

By: Sarah Schwefel

When we go into the dispensary there are many options to choose from to administer our cannabis. There are tinctures, edibles, flower, concentrates, lotions, and so much more. It all looks appealing, but how do we know what to take for our personal goals? And how do we know when we will feel the effects and not have a bunch of edibles hit us at once? (Many of us have been here and it’s not a pleasant time.) Let’s review the various routes of administration we have with cannabis. As consumers it’s important to understand how cannabis works in our bodies with our metabolism, or the pharmacokinetics of cannabis, to know the expected onset and duration of what we are consuming whether it be a joint or a delicious cookie. The absorbance of cannabinoids in our bodies can be influenced by an array of factors such as drug lipophilicity, tissue differences, and bioavailability which are all influenced by the route of administration. There are multiple routes of administration when it comes to cannabis. We can take it orally, topically, and by route of inhalation. Additionally, there is another route by the way of suppository, and though it is the least common it has one of the highest absorption rates. Oral administration is extremely popular among consumers, most commonly by the way of edibles or tinctures. However, when consuming edibles we are only absorbing about 6% of the cannabinoids. This is because orally ingested cannabis has an extensive first pass metabolism. This is a phenomenon of drug metabolism where the concentration of a drug, specifically when administered orally, is greatly reduced before it reaches the systemic circulation resulting in lower peak plasma concentrations. Orally ingested cannabis is a favorite among medical cannabis patients due to its lasting effects from 6-8 hours dependent on the individual. However, orally ingested cannabinoids have the longest onset of effects from 60-180 minutes. This can lead to undesired effects with consumers as they may take more waiting for the effects to kick in. So please wait at least 180 minutes between those delicious cookies to know how it will really affect you before indulging in more. Fun fact if you take too much THC, try some CBD to help counteract the unwanted euphoric affects you may experience.

52

Unlike oral administration, vaping and smoking by the route of inhalation both avoid the first pass metabolism. Smoked and vaped cannabis has similar pharmacokinetics having an onset time of 5-10 minutes on average, achieving a rapid delivery of the cannabinoids.

The bioavailability of smoked CBD and THC varies, with reported rates between 8%-35%, with the effects lasting 2-4 hours on average. Inhalation is a go to method for someone who wants to feel the effects quickly and is the ideal method for patients who need relief from breakthrough pain and symptoms throughout the day. The transdermal administration of cannabinoids works by allowing the cannabinoids to penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream, typically through lotions, patches, or bath soaks. Transdermal application also bypasses the first pass metabolism, as inhalation does, however absorption through this route can be hindered by the hydrophobicity of cannabinoid components, meaning how the compound blends or doesn’t blend when exposed to water. If the compound is hydrophobic, failing to mix with water, it can lead to poor drug diffusion across the aqueous skin layer. The onset of action and duration are variable and dependent on the quality of formulation, however with a quality formulation we should feel the effects in 20-30 minutes after application. Transdermal application is great to target particular spots on our bodies that need relief. When choosing our cannabis products, it is important to consider these factors. Personally, I utilize all routes of administration throughout the day as a chronic pain patient to get as many methods of absorption into my endocannabinoid system as possible. I use edibles, tinctures, and RSO to manage my base pain, inhalation with flower, vapes, and concentrates to manage symptoms throughout my day and target breakthrough pain, and topicals to bring the much-needed relief to specific joints. As consumers it is crucial to know how the products will affect us to get the results we desire and deserve from our cannabinoid products.

CANNABIS OIL AS A VIAGRA REPLACEMENT

BY SHARON lETTS

Bonus Benefits in the Bedroom Many who take cannabis oil for serious ailments often get a bonus in finding help with other ailments and disorders in the process. My own story reflects this, as in 2012 I presented with cancer, Lobular Carcinoma, a spider web-like mass in my right breast. Because I was working in media in Humboldt County in Northern California at the time, I was given the strong cannabis oil by longtime farmer and apothecary, Pearl Moon, of the Bud Sisters of Southern Humboldt. I was given the oil to treat the cancer, but after two and a half weeks, all the pharmaceuticals I’d been taking for more

than ten years fell away, with hormonal symptoms from Thyroid Disease and menopause quelled. The first night I took the oil I no longer needed the sleeping pill I’d taken for years, the next day I found I no longer needed the pain killer for a proposed knee replacement (subsequently canceled). This happened because superfoods, like cannabis, address all 11 of our biological systems via the endocannabinoid system, which accepts plant-based compounds into our bodies in order to create homeostasis, or a place where illness can not dwell.

Replacing Viagra For the past ten years since my cancer experience, I’ve learned how to make my own remedies with plants. This is not uncommon after being helped with the plant, especially after replacing numerous pharmaceuticals successfully. Another thing that happens is, you begin helping friends, family, and your community at large. Since learning how to make my own remedies I’ve helped hundreds, with myriad ailments quelled or lessened. One man (who shall remain anonymous) came to me with advanced symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease,

54

or COPD. He had heard that cannabis might at least help him sleep better at night, as he had labored breathing, a rattle, and a nasty cough. Typically caused by years of smoking cigarettes, with permanent lung damage that gets progressively worse, symptoms of COPD include breathing difficulty, coughing, mucus (sputum) production and wheezing. COPD is the leading cause of death in the U.S., with more than 16.4 diagnosed, and many suffering without knowing it. A terminal illness, there is no treatment to cure the disease. Stopping smoking tobacco can only help slow the dire symptoms down. I had helped a few others in treating COPD. If they are used to the high THC, they can take cannabis oil capsules at bedtime or as needed, with excellent results. Rattle gone, breathing easier, cough diminished. Patients admit to doing away with steroid inhalers altogether, or their use is cut down drastically. While we do not know the extent of healing in the lungs by ingesting cannabis oil, we do know that cannabis and other beneficial plant compounds can regenerate healthy tissue in the body. My own observations in helping people with this disease have shown that cannabis, with its anti-inflammatory and healing properties, practically puts the nasty ailment into remission. The man in question that I helped is in his early 70s, and hasn’t smoked cigarettes in

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

many years, and doesn’t smoke cannabis. Since he wasn’t used to the high THC, I made him suppositories, as there is no head high and you can take a larger dose at one time to treat serious ailments more quickly (up to one gram of oil mixed with coconut in each dose). After some months of administering a suppository every night, with multiple orders, this man had a confession. He felt he reached a plateau in treating his COPD, as the symptoms were lessened substantially, but he wanted to keep doing them as the treatment simultaneously helped with another situation that previously needed a prescription pharmaceutical of Viagra. Almost embarrassed to tell me, but he really wanted me to know, as he was so happy about the bonus. The end result of his taking the cannabis oil nightly was to be able to pleasure his girlfriend and continue enjoying the sex life they had loved so much - without the added help of the little blue pill. It’s been three years now of him taking the suppositories and he looks healthier than ever, and is still going strong in bed. And the COPD? What COPD? No longer an issue.

fruits and vegetables in the diet for just two weeks can lift someone out of depression, giving them an overall sense of well-being. When everything in the body is functioning properly, the libido isn’t left out. With all the talk of “what cultivar should I smoke before having sex?” the true healing happens when we ingest cannabis and other beneficial plants, creating a healthy and happy human - in and out of bed.

Cannabis Oil Recipe (suppositories or capsules) INGREDIENTS: 4 cups ground plant material (small buds, stem and leaf – whole plant) 1 liter grain alcohol (high proof, 90 percentile)

Got Studies?

DIRECTIONS: Cover the ground plant material with the solvent, and let soak for up to five minutes*.

A simple search shows many articles on CBD relieving anxiety, offering some help with Erectile Dysfunction (ED), but nothing conclusive.

Strain in a fine mesh or sheet and pour into a rice cooker, set it to warm, leave the lid open. It should take between three to four hours to cook down.

The help I’ve observed as a self taught Apothecary, was done using whole plant cannabis, with the THC activated, not just one compound of cannabidiol, or CBD.

There may be plant matter in brown chunks, do not use this. Tilt the rice cooker insert to pool the oil, and carefully uptake from the clear liquid.

One theory on how this works is similar to how a healthy human body functions more efficiently than a non-healthy body. Beneficial plants in a healthy diet increase positive body functions, reduce inflammation and infection, create dopamine in the brain and lift endorphins as quick as a morning jog (which also lifts the libido or sexual drive).

You will have a thick, brown resin remaining. These are the essential oils of the plant, where the medicine is. Just prior to the final reduction, add two tablespoons of coconut oil to the mix. This will keep it from burning (ruining the medicine). Adding coconut is also a good delivery into the bloodstream.

The same theory applies to treating depression. A study found that increasing

I take a whiff of the mixture, as you can smell the alcohol if it hasn’t cooked off. With the coconut in there, it can sit a bit

to make sure the alcohol has completely evaporated. Using a measured pipette, using a capsule holder, fill caps with 1 milliliter of the mixture. If there is any alcohol (or water from weak solvent) in the mix, the capsule will melt. Test by filling one up and checking. For suppositories, use 1 gram of oil mixed with coconut, pour into suppository molds using pipette. Keep in the refrigerator to solidify and keep fresh. This essential oil is precious, use it in a timely manner for freshness and efficacy. SUGGESTED DOSING: One one-millimeter suppository taken rectally, nightly or one capsule taken orally at night, or as needed every three to four hours for serious ailments/illness. *Longer soaks have shown lower numbers of beneficial compounds, diluted by too much chlorophyll. Let's Talk

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

>>>>> CANNABIS ALLERGIES May is here and that means Spring Allergies! Most of us in the valley know what I’m talking about when I speak of how the environment in this valley haS a tendency to cause itchy and watery eyes, runny nose, blah blah blah! It can last from days at a time up to weeks if left untreated. A whopping 50 million Americans experience allergies, nearly one billion worldwide. An estimated 36 million of that 50, who react to pollen, tend to have the same experience with cannabis.

Why does this occur? Cross-reactivity

58

is the primary source to blame. What is cross-reactivity? It’s what happens when the proteins (generally pollen) of one type of substance are like the proteins of another substance. For instance, there are foods that share a resemblance with cannabis proteins. Items such as peaches, apples, almonds, grapefruit, bananas, eggplant, tomatoes, and chestnuts just to name a few (Leonard, 2018). Besides the connection to some of the foods that we eat, contact is also a reason why one may experience allergic reactions. Not only smoking, but touching, eating, and even breathing the same air that is full of pollen may also trigger allergic reactions. Airborne pollen is commonly found in the Southwest states of the U.S. Some individuals may also experience an allergic reaction to hemp seed which is found in drinks, foods, oils, and even skincare products. Those who break out in rashes, hives, or swelling from contact with the plant potentially have more cross-reaction sensitivities (anaphylaxis is possible in severe cases). This is commonly found among those who work in cultivation facilities or processing, or even those who work in laboratory testing facilities. Although we are aware that cross-reactivity occurs, more research and clinical terminology are still needed. Some of the symptoms reported to date include nasal congestion, sore throat, wheezing (asthma attacks in more severe cases), skin reactions, and watery eyes. One thing that we need to be aware of is

BY: TEE "CANNA" MORENO @CANNAPSYCHMD

that as adult use (recreational) continues to legalize nationwide, increased use of cannabis will occur. This means that allergens may become a more common occurrence amongst the population of cannabis patients and consumers. The only form of current treatment available is AIT (allergen-specific immunotherapy), which is the only treatment for long-term disease modification of allergic disorders (Frei, 2016). There have only been a few studies that cover the allergens of cannabis. Increased levels of AEA (Anandamide), which are the same receptors that THC acts on, have shown contributions to increased asthmatic reactions. The CB2 receptors play a significant role in our pain management, immune functions, and inflammation. Amongst other things like regulating dopamine production with behaviors such as addiction, have been shown to play a protective position against asthma. CBD also shows efforts in reducing inflammation and decreasing asthmatic reactions, in addition to restoring lung function. The ECS (endocannabinoid system) also shows its involvement with the pathophysiology (the disordered physiological processes associated with disease or injury) of asthma by regulating the immune responses. The ECS has been demonstrated in the development and control of allergic diseases. Yet the data of all of the cannabinoids and receptors involved are still yet to be determined. Although this information has been found in one specific study (Angelina, 2020), further research is necessary to determine the consistent findings of what variables are involved to determine the roles that each compound involved plays in allergic reactions to cannabis. If you think you are experiencing allergic reactions to cannabis, it is recommended that you speak with your primary care doctor regarding your symptoms. They may be able to provide in-depth testing on

what is giving you allergic reactions. I’m currently nominated by the Las Vegas Cannabis Awards Music Festival for both “Educator of the Year” & “Activist of the Year” 2022! I tend to be a Caesar salad girl, but today I’m going to go with something a little bit sweeter. A Strawberry Caprese Pasta Salad, with the zesty sweet taste of a CBD-infused strawberry balsamic dressing with fresh mint and basil herbs. It's sure to be a delightful treat for any barbecue or summer picnic you may cater to this summer.

CBD-Infused Strawberry Balsamic Dressing

Ingredients: 1 cup strawberries with the tops cut off 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 2 Tbsp olive oil 1/4 Tbsp salt If you’d like to use THC or add more CBD, now would be the perfect time to sweeten and thicken it up with Cannabella or (homemade) THC or CBD infused honey Preparation: In a blender, add all the ingredients and purée until you have a smooth salad dressing.

fresh mint and basil extra virgin olive oil ( you can use infused olive oil by adding tincture to it, as it loves attaching itself to fatty substances. ) (Optional) CBD or THC infused honey kosher salt freshly ground pepper or you can substitute Sol Preparation: In a large pot of water, season generously with salt and bring to a boil, and add pasta. Once done, strain and lightly rinse so pasta isn’t sticky and let cool. While pasta is boiling, cut slices of the strawberries and onions and add to the large bowl with the drained mozzarella balls, then add the cooled pasta. Drizzle your dressing over the salad, toss lightly and add a little more salt and pepper to your liking and enjoy - Bon appetit!

STRICTLY HEMPIN CBD LEMONADE Strictly Hempin CBD Lemonade is a great refreshing drink that would go perfectly with the infused Strawberry Caprese Salad

Ingredients: 1 glass pitcher or 32 oz jar lemon squeezer lemons and strawberries small hand strainer ice small sauté pan 32 oz of bottled water of your choice (you can use infused CBD water) 1 small jar of CBD or THC infused honey ( I love Canabella ) sugar in the raw ( to your sweet tooth’s liking ) pure agave light or dark (to your liking) CBD tincture of your choice Preparation: Cut lemons in half and squeeze lemons with squeezer into the pitcher (use the strainer to keep the seeds out of the pitcher). Pour in your water. Cut one of your lemons into round slices to float in the jar or pitcher. Cut the strawberries into small slices as you will also float the strawberries at the top. Now, over medium to low heat pour your desired amount of agave into the pan heating it up to a saucy consistency then stir in the CBD tincture. Cook for a minute continuing to stir then pour the agave into the pitcher or jar. Now, add the “sugar in the raw “ to your liking. Add ice and stir. Now float your lemons and strawberries to complete a perfectly crisp and delicious CBD summer drink. Follow Marnie Montroy on Instagram @MarnieMontroy and @ cookingforaqueen.
