VERANO'S JOURNEY

>>> AND EXPANSION THROUGHOUT NEVADA

>>> Verano Holdings began their journey into the cannabis world back in 2016 when they opened their first Zen Leaf dispensary right here in Las Vegas. Today, they grow more than 150 strains in 13 state-of-the-art cultivation and production facilities throughout the nation. With over 100 dispensaries and more than 4,000 employees, Verano has really made a strong impact within the cannabis industry.

By STEPHANIE SHEHAN

works well here as the building itself was formerly a bank with drive-up teller windows. The transition was easy and the ease of convenience for Zen Leaf customers is a great incentive. I had the pleasure of speaking with Annalisa Vidal, Zen Leaf’s Senior Dispensary Manager, to learn more about Zen Leaf as a whole and her experience working there. Annalisa expressed the immense amount of love that she has for Verano and for the brand: “I love what Verano stands for and I love the team of people that I get to work with. It’s a beautiful thing when you get to work with people who care so much about what they do and why they do it. I am very passionate about the industry and helping people.” Annalisa also let me in on a few of her favorite products. Annalisa loves Verano vapes. She says, “I am typically a flower girl, but the Verano vapes taste just like our Verano flower. They are true to each strain and they induce a nice flower high.” Her second favorite product is Verano flower. According to Annalisa, “Our flower looks, smells and feels just like it should. It’s extremely clean and smells and tastes amazing.”

In southern Nevada, Verano has three Zen Leaf dispensary locations as well as a cultivation and production facility. In northern Nevada, there are two Zen Leaf dispensary locations along with a cultivation facility stemming from their recent acquisition of Sierra Well. Their flagship store opened on Post Road six years ago as the only dispensary in the state functioning “deli style” allowing budtenders to weigh out and package bulk cannabis in front of customers. The Post Road location caters to locals with a good reach as the longest opened dispensary in that particular area. This location is both a medical and recreational dispensary, catering to medical patients and offering hard to find, medical-only products. After all, if not for medical, there would be no recreational! The second, and much anticipated Zen Leaf store opened in North Las Vegas in 2021 and sits on the very busy Craig Road. As the largest store in southern Nevada, this is a go-to for patrons living in North Las Vegas. This location is always busy and the employees are welcoming, informative and eager to help customers find exactly what they are looking for. Last year, Zen Leaf opened their third location on Flamingo Road, not far from the Las Vegas Strip. The Flamingo Road location also operates “deli style” which is a nice surprise for visiting tourists. This location features a drive-thru, which allows patrons to place orders right at the window when they drive up instead of calling ahead. This unique feature

When the first Zen Leaf store opened, the idea, according to the company “was to create a dispensary environment that could satisfy the myriad needs of its patrons while fostering the longstanding cannabis community through reliability, accessibility and authenticity. It was, and to this day remains, a priority that Zen Leaf dispensaries be a place of both comfort and care.” Zen Leaf has achieved exactly what they set out to. Walk in to any Zen Leaf store in Nevada and you will be greeted warmly and assisted with a smile.

Weed, Chamomile and Shrooms!

Using Plants For Depression, Microdosing With Psilocybin Mushrooms

Since I was 16 years old, cannabis has been my go-to in treating the blues. In my 50’s I added ingesting, then chamomile concentrate (known to successfully treat depression) per a study. Now, in my 60’s, I’ve added microdosing Psilocybin mushrooms on a regular basis, as an excellent reset like no other, complimenting my already established daily dosing of cannabis and chamomile.

professionally without first medicating by smoking. Cannabis helps me get into a zone and focus- plain and simple. Cannabis also made my trauma-ridden young life easier, but I never understood why. I was only told it was wrong and that I was a stupid, lazy stoner.

We talk about the entourage effect within cannabis dosing alone - for instance, smoking, with ingesting, with topical use, treats chronic pain overall more effectively than just smoking. Smoking on top of ingesting, including taking pain killers, raises the efficacy of the pills. And why it's been widely reported in states legal for cannabis, that opioid use lowers.

Troubled Teen As an adolescent, I was never considered very bright and found it difficult to pay attention. School was tough and home life tumultuous. In 1975 I took my first hit from a joint of ragweed on the way to high school in a gas station bathroom, and I immediately felt happier and more relaxed. That was also the first day I was able to focus on school work. I was first published as a poet at 19, and haven’t written anything

from thyroid disease, and started smoking and walking around my neighborhood with my camera. Shedding the weight and feeling better and more productive overall.

Medicated, not Stoned The word “stoned” comes from the alcohol culture, and doesn’t really explain the lift one feels on cannabis. When we smoke, endorphins are physically lifted and dopamine is created in the brain. This is what causes the happiness or euphoria one feels, with the word “high” being a better descriptor. When I began a cannabis oil treatment for breast cancer in my early 50’s (see Sharon’s Daily Dose) many of my hormonal symptoms from menopause with thyroid disease were treated successfully almost immediately with my mood elevated far better than just smoking had done.

This is how I’ve come to manage my ongoing depression, anxiety, and lack of focus, caused by thyroid disease with menopause, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and symptoms on the spectrum; by layering different plants and fungi, causing an entourage effect of healing and well-being. But, this has taken me 10 years to accomplish, after crossing over from mainstream media into the cannabis publishing space, writing with a focus on cannabis as medicine. Each profile I’ve written has been a learning experience, with my work helping many and most of all, myself.

Daily Dose

After finding a study on chamomile treating anxiety and depression, I began making a concentrate with coconut in capsules. I also started adding half chamomile to my cannabis oil, as its properties are just as beneficial as cannabidiol (CBD), and takes the edge off the high THC. When I became pregnant with my daughter at 29, I stopped smoking weed altogether. I didn’t have it in the house again until she was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (FMS) at 13, after purchasing it for her off the illicit market in Los Angeles.

Life was good, and then I discovered microdosing with Psilocybin mushrooms.

Got ‘Shrooms?

My daughter was a D.A.R.E. kid, a straight A student, gifted, and didn’t like the euphoria given.

The first time I took Psilocybin mushrooms I was on a bike ride from my home in Redondo Beach to Manhattan Beach, and stopped off at a party house. I was met at the door by a guy who (without telling me what they were) put a small pile of fresh mushrooms (could have been 5 grams), on an antique, silver spoon, into my mouth.

So, this mom took my daughter’s stash, created an art studio in the garage, and began smoking once again. I had gained 40 pounds

Thank goodness there was a bike path, as I walked my bike nearly four miles home on that bright summer day, barely remembering

At the time, I was working as a writer/producer for television, and the plant greatly improved my focus, just as it had in high school.

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014 how I got there. I then sat in a cold shower for I don’t know how long, until the effects wore off. It was not fun, and it was incredibly irresponsible of the shroom guy. I was only 14 years old. Swearing I’d never take them again, it was in the past few years that the education on using them for depression as a reset by microdosing got my attention.

Then I began ingesting the dried mushroom at .5 grams for a longer lasting effect, but it was an inconsistent dose. So, I then added the shrooms to drinking alcohol (a good cognac, to start) with ¼ c. ground cannabis per liter for a tincture. Adding .5 grams of shrooms per cup; one liter/four cups, or two grams per. I let this “tea” sit in a cool cupboard for about a week, strained, and decanted.

There are approximately 180 types of hallucinogenic mushrooms, and I initially began dosing with one of the more common types, Liberty Caps - tall, skinny stems with small, round caps (pictured). I’d take what I called a “giggle dose,” or the size of a lentil. Then, I ground about .5 grams or less of dried mushrooms with cannabis flower and would smoke it in a joint. Realizing it's not an efficient way to dose, as much of the medicine of both materials is burned up in the process, but it provided a nicer lift than just the cannabis. I found the two to be exceptionally complimentary, sharing the same positive effects in tandem. To reiterate, this is microdosing, not taking enough to have a hallucinogenic or more spiritual experience (five grams).

I liken the experience to when you take your first hit of a dank flower, and feel that warm lift, but it doesn’t last and you need to keep smoking. Microdosing mushrooms helps that lift stay up there longer. It’s a game-changer as far as lifting endorphins go, in my mind and, so far, it's been perfect as a weekly reset in treating my hormonal depression. I like to say that cannabis was my gateway drug to other plants, and now fungi. It’s been an interesting journey, but one I’m grateful for. I was just given a variety of shrooms to try from a friend. While I’m a little dismayed that shrooms are seemingly becoming more accepted as medicine than cannabis, it’s all good. It’s all connected, with a domino effect of healing that can’t be stopped.

The tincture has been the best delivery mode to date, in my mind. I can sip throughout the day for a lift; make an infused cocktail to enjoy or for a good night’s sleep; or take a shot and turn the music up and dance.

We start with fresh frozen cannabis flowers and separate the trichomes with water and ice. Next, this ice hash is freeze-dried in order to preserve terpenes, flavor and aroma before being squeezed in a rosin press. >>> KENDRA TRIPLETT

>>> BY JOSH KASOFF Member of the Yerington Paiute Tribe and General Manager of Pesha Numma Dispensary in Yerington, NV

tretching across vast expanses of land that would later become regions as spread apart as Central Oregon all the way down to the Las Vegas Valley, the Yerington Paiute tribe is a related tribe to the greater Northern Paiute people. Originally nomadic before settling in the respective areas that the tribes are now associated with, the Northern Paiute had a mostly healthy relationship with the neighboring Shoshone tribes and avoided conflict with Euro-Americans until around 1860. Through 1860-1880, the Northern Paiute people and neighboring tribes engaged in several violent confrontations with the expanding American government. Of the many conflicts involving Indigenous people and the Americans, the ones that most directly involved the Northern Paiute people were the Pyramid Lake War, Owens Valley Indian War, the four-year Snake War and the Bannock War of 1878. While the battles themselves were bloody and resulted in hundreds of deaths on both sides, exponentially more Paiute people died as a result. Not of the bloodshed, but rather by endemic European diseases that the Native Americans had no such immunity against. In 1890, after the majority of conflicts with the Northern Paiute people had ended, the inhumanity committed by the US government only continued. It’s incredibly difficult to accurately describe the atrocities, abuse of every type and widespread cultural genocide that occured throughout the far too many decades that the Indian schools (known as residential schools in Canada) were open and operational. Fully funded by both the American and Canadian governments as well as receiving financial and personnel support from various Christian churches (but most notably the Roman Catholic Church) these horrific schools

20

kidnapped Native children directly from their reservations and stole them away to boarding schools that were sometimes hundreds or thousands of miles away from the only homes these innocent children ever knew. While in these “schools”, Indigenous children were stripped of everything that defined themselves and their relationship to their culture. Their hair, a part of the body that holds great significance in certain Indigenous cultures, was cut clean off and these children were totally forbidden from speaking their Native language or practicing their rich culture that they had been raised in or risk punishments that were downright abusive on so many levels. These children were given new, more Anglican names while they were forced to dress more “American” or “European.” They were baptized and forcibly converted to Christianity, forced to completely distance themselves from their Native culture in every conceivable way. The decrepit conditions of the boarding schools that these children were kidnapped into would make any supporter of the Geneva Conventions seethe with anger. It was undoubtedly one of the most blatant examples of forced assimilation the American and Canadian governments has ever committed. In so many tragic cases, those Indigenous children who endured the most unthinkable horrors never returned to their original culture. In May of 2022, it was confirmed that at least 500 Indigenous children were confirmed to have been killed during the decades that the American residential schools were open. The report by the Interior Department detailed 400 schools and 50 gravesites that were identified and estimates that several more have yet to be found.

In May of 2021, a horrifying discovery was made at the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Through ground-penetrating radar and excavation, the remains of 215 different First Nations children were found in unmarked graves across the property. The death of these children were never reported or properly documented, so the exact death dates and other factors that could provide closure for those Indigenous families will never be provided. Around the 1890’s, several children from the Northern Paiute tribes as well as the neighboring Washoes and Shoshones were forcefully taken from their lands and sent to the Stewart Indian School located in Carson City where these abusive practices rampantly occurred. Even worse, this Indian school didn’t close until 1980, meaning that these culturally genocidal practices happened there for almost 90 years. Similar to many Indigenous/First Nations groups across not only North America but also every other colonized country, the brutalities and further injustices against the Northern Paiute people both in the Indian schools and across their lands were

Nevada's Original Cannabis Resource // Since 2014

TRIBAL CANNABIS almost never ending and the aftershock of those injustices are still being felt by generations of modern Paiutes today.

on a reservation-located dispensary in contrast to the more massive, corporateowned larger city dispensaries.

While Las Vegas and Reno aren’t at any possible shortage of dispensaries to visit, it’s important for cannabis consumers to remember that there are still plenty of Nevada dispensaries that exist and operate outside the city limits of The Silver State’s two biggest cities. Fully functional retail dispensaries operate in Elko and Ely with menus that rival even the most popular of Vegas dispensaries while Lovelock hosts the Nabodoka Dispensary. Near Mason, Nevada there is the Pesha Numma dispensary and only 30 minutes east of that store is the Tumatzwkwae Nobe dispensary, located on the Walker River Reservation.

“Working on tribal land is different. You have a different sense of community and it’s nice that we get to see our elders a lot more. When we have our elders come in, we’ve been able to educate them and I’ve done education tutorials with our elderly center in town. When they’re playing bingo or something like that, I can help them learn more about CBD products and THC products. The products that could really help them and tap into the medicine that is actually grown and not a pharmaceutical medication.”

In fact, many of the dispensaries mentioned above are owned not by multistate operators but by Native American tribes who’ve utilized the cannabis plant’s many uses on those lands for centuries before the federal prohibition of a completely natural plant was even fathomable. Throughout reservations and smaller Nevada towns, Indigenous people have found their way into the wider statewide cannabis industry. Dispensaries and even cultivation/production facilities are fully owned and operated by the Lovelock Paiute, Winnemucca, Walker River Paiute, Yerington Paiute, and Ely Shoshone tribes. As a member of the Yerington Paiute tribe and General Manager of the tribal-owned Pesha Numma Dispensary in Yerington, NV, Kendra Triplett is well-versed and experienced in the field of Native American cannabis and the growing involvement of Indigenous people in the cannabis industry. Especially since she’s only ever been employed by the dispensary that she worked her way up from budtender within, her perspective on the matter is of great importance. As the total population of Yerington is slightly under 3,200 people, Triplett describes both a very different working environment and shopping environment

Because Yerington is in such a rural area (almost two hours away from Reno) and the town itself is very small, that sense of community is incredibly strong. To the store’s credit, it’s fully stocked with many of the popular cannabis brands that have become award-winning in Nevada cities and the green ambulance adorned in weed leaves always parked outside the store lovingly referred to as the “Dab-ulance” is a great attraction for the tribal dispensary. While those city cannabis brands are represented, Pesha Numma also makes sure to feature Native-owned cannabis brands and cultivations. “In my eyes, I think that we’re able to take a little bit of an advantage to actually help the community.” Triplett explained. “Not only does our tax money go back to the community that we serve, we also get to have more interactions with locals and elders. We have open communication when our customers walk in and ask them how they like the products. When I’ve gone to a state dispensary, I haven’t seen that very much. But here, when they walk in our doors, we’re really able to have that communication with them.” Similarly to other dispensaries owned and operated by Native Americans on tribal land, the specialness of the land that Pesha Numma is located on is greatly emphasized and appreciated by not only the dispensary itself but Triplett as well.

“The cannabis plant is natural. For us, when we are trying to heal ourselves from whatever we’re dealing with, we want to look for the most natural medicine possible because that’s how our land has always been able to give us the nutrients. Everything that we need is always from the land. The land can provide all of that for us. It can help with illnesses. It can help anyone dealing with unfortunate circumstances in life.” From her years working with Pesha Numma, the experience has allowed Triplett to become a cannabis educator in her life outside of the dispensary. “I learned more about cannabis and having that natural plant and the difference it can make for someone who has diabetes or someone who’s suffering from cancer. The difference that it can make without having to take pharmaceuticals that are man-made that are putting poison into your body at the end of the day.” Outside of her work with Pesha Numma, Triplett also serves as the Regional Manager of the Tribal Cannabis Consultants. The Nevada-based organization helps provide many avenues for Native Americans to enter the cannabis industry and access to legal, administrative and financial services that those Native-owned cannabis brands and stores will be using on an almost daily basis. Since the organization’s creation in 2014, the TCC has helped a total of five different tribes become established in the cannabis industry with the Ely Shoshone tribe holding the distinct honor of being the first tribe to create their own medical cannabis cards that gained reciprocity from Nevada. In a similar fashion to the work done by advocacy groups to enact legal reforms or new laws entirely related to cannabis, the TCC and Natives working in cannabis came together to pass an incredibly influential bill in 2017. Introduced and sponsored by then State Senator Tick Segerblom, Nevada Senate Bill 375 “authorizes agreements between the Governor and Indian tribes in this

21

State relating to the regulation of the use of marijuana” according to LegiScan. Not too surprising given the exponentially growing support for cannabis reform among conservatives, but SB 375 passed unanimously in the Nevada Senate. Every single one of the 21 Nevada State Senators voted in favor of the bill, with all nine Republicans voting in favor of the measure. Moreover, only three Republicans voted against the measure in the Nevada Assembly. Signed into law on June 6, 2017 by then-Governor Brian Sandoval, SB 375 was likely very influential in establishing tribal-owned dispensaries that not only operate in the Silver State but give Nevada cannabis a preview as to what is to come for the retail side of the industry. Nuwu Cannabis, also owned and operated by the Paiute tribe, has given Nevada a years-long preview into what the cannabis consumption lounges could eventually become via the

Tasting Room and its extensive menu and opportunities. As for how Indigenous people can become more involved and represented in Nevada cannabis, Triplett calls upon both Nativeowned and not Native-owned dispensaries alike to continue to hire Native people and provide opportunities for expansion.

“I would’ve never imagined I could be general manager for a tribal dispensary and making that step is the biggest importance for Indigenous people to be able to come into this industry and not just work, but learn from this and grow and have these successful careers. And then additionally, us being more involved is letting us have a seat at the table and have our voice be heard.”

Ask the Leaf Nurse Green Prozac: Cannabis for Mental Health Remember “Cheers”? “Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away? Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, And they’re always glad you came. You want to go where people know, people are all the same, You want to go where everyone knows your name.” Loneliness and social isolation can be as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Loneliness can lead to depression, anxiety and cause mental and physical problems. People who suffer from chronic pain may experience chronic depression, anxiety, loneliness and suicidal thoughts because of their pain. It’s a dangerous cycle and you may feel like the pain is just leaking out of your body. We live in a world that is designed to get us to neglect what is important, like our mental and physical health and maintaining meaningful connections with others. We have been fed junk food

to make us physically sick and junk values that say we can buy our happiness through money, status and “the good life”. The more we buy and display our way out of sadness and into the good life, the more we become depressed and anxious. Clinical depression is a serious medical illness that involves the brain. It’s more than just a feeling of being “down in the dumps” or “blue” for a few days. There are a variety of causes, including genetic, environmental, psychological and biochemical factors. The use of marijuana to alleviate symptoms of depression is gaining momentum worldwide as a natural alternative to synthetic supplements that may have harmful side effects. Medical marijuana is rich in cannabinoids and terpenes. It contains THC and CBD which may have the ability to help people with depression. One reason cannabis is effective is because it has 61 unique cannabinoids, each of which fall into one of eleven groups that have different effects. Thanks to hundreds of scientific studies analyzing the effects of cannabis on depression, we now know why this herb is such a powerful antidote, giving it the nickname “Green Prozac”. Researchers have discovered that when people are emotionally stressed, they produce less endocannabinoids or the compounds in the brain that are responsible for regulating our moods. When there is less endocannabinoid production in the brain, this is when people tend to suffer more anxiety, depression, and stress. Using compounds derived from cannabis (marijuana) to restore normal endocannabinoid function could potentially help stabilize moods and ease depression. Low doses of cannabis are effective in increasing serotonin levels. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter responsible for regulating sleep, libido and appetite. Different cannabis strains have different effects on your body and mind, and the three broad categories being sativa, indica and hybrid. Dozens of strains have been cultivated specifically to target depression. If you are looking for an alternative therapy, you may want to consider using cannabis to treat depression. Blunt Brunch Educating and Connecting Women Through Blunt Conversations Parisa Rad, aka The Marijauna Momma, is a veteran in the cannabis community. Her daughter Yazy’s medical issues are what propelled Parisa into the world of cannabis. Her journey started about 9 years ago at an advocacy level, speaking out for the plant and the benefits it has for pediatric patients fighting health battles. In addition, her work helped shape the laws surrounding medical cannabis in her home state of Arizona. While continuing to advocate for cannabis, Parisa quickly realized that there was a need for marketing and consulting within the industry. As she stepped into those roles, she also became a market leader for Women Grow Phoenix. In 2020, as the pandemic hit and events came to a halt, Parisa accepted a position with Fourtwenty Collections and is now expanding that company into New Mexico.

Adelia Carrillo is the CMO and Co-Founder of EventHi, an online event management and ticketing platform catering to the cannabis industry. Today, EventHi is available in 48 states and they utilize a unique compliance software to keep everything running smoothly. Prior to entering the cannabis industry, Adelia received the news that she was expecting. The pregnancy turned out to be ectopic and after surgery, Adelia faced a long road of recovery, both physically and emotionally. The physician prescribed pharmaceuticals did not seem to help and upon the suggestion of her fiance, Adelia tried cannabis. It was as if a weight had been lifted and she finally began to heal, thus beginning her mission to get involved and move the plant forward. In 2020, these ladies joined forces and cofounded Blunt Brunch. Adelia had just moved to Arizona and the original plan for Blunt Brunch was simply to connect Adelia to like-minded women in the local cannabis space. It was apparent that this was just what they (and other women) needed - a safe space to connect and talk openly and “bluntly” with other women.

They kept it going, and Blunt Brunch grew so quickly that they had to have two events each month to accommodate the guest list and also keep each brunch small enough that intimate conversations could be had. The industry has seen a multitude of cannabis networking events, some corporate with industry speakers and business attire expected and others that are extremely casual where consumption is encouraged. But, Blunt Brunch is different. It is geared towards women, holds a “come as you are” attitude and moves honest conversations that encourage lasting connections. Blunt Brunch is open to executive women in cannabis and they currently hold events in five different areas: Phoenix, Tucson, New Mexico, Southern California and Las Vegas. Local events are held the 4th Saturday of each month. For more information about Blunt Brunch, please visit bluntbrunch.com or follow them on Instagram @blunt.brunch. Here in Las Vegas, the Blunt Brunch Market Leader is Taiya Thompson, owner of Crooked Cactus CBD. Those interested in attending or being a gift bag sponsor can visit bit.ly/ lvbluntbrunch where a short form is available to complete and submit to the Blunt Brunch team. You can follow the local Blunt Brunch events via Taiya’s Instagram page @talktotaiya.

My Passion for the Plant A Patient Testimonial

>>> By Sarah Schwefel >>> Photo by Diyahna Lewis

Being a patient and an advocate often feels like an impossible blend. But for me, it’s a necessary blend that I am determined to make work, because cannabis saved my life; and I would not be here today without it.

40

I am a medical refugee. Myself and my family moved from Wisconsin to Nevada in 2018 for access to legal cannabis and the dry climate for my health. I have a rare connective tissue disorder, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, that left me bed bound for many years. It can affect everything in the body and has left little unscathed in mine. I have wide-spread pain, frequent dislocations, many spine injuries, a leaky heart, blurred vision, and unfortunately so much more. The worst hit has been my spine, with more injuries than fingers to count at this point. In Wisconsin, I was deteriorating rapidly, no longer able to prepare any meal for myself or make the ten steps to my bathroom without my husband holding me up. I was trapped in my body, with a mind that could still conquer the world. I went doctor to doctor, thinking there has to be something that can help me, but there was nothing. The medical community accepted that there was nothing to be done for me and my life was to be filled with suffering and unbearable pain, and I was forced to accept it too. There came a point where I didn’t want tomorrow to happen anymore. I became engulfed in a darkness that felt like there would never be light again and I wanted out. In 2018, my husband and I came to Las Vegas to get married and from that point on my life was forever changed. The plane ride was horrendous on my body, and I thought there is no way I can do this vacation. We went to a dispensary upon landing to get something to help me through. I had already used cannabis illegally in Wisconsin to try to help me cope with the pain I felt, but it was nothing compared to the therapeutic power of legal cannabis. I will never forget feeling the first wave of relief cannabis gave to me. It brought me to my knees and all I could do was cry. I felt relief for the first time in many years, relief I thought was impossible. At that moment my husband vowed to move us to Las Vegas. And though, I thought it could never happen, eight months later myself, my husband, and my mother made the 1,800-mile drive to our new home in

Las Vegas. Moving for cannabis and having access gave my husband his wife back, my mother her daughter, and myself- a future I wanted again. It lit a fire in me to scream from every mountain top what cannabis does for me, and a hunger for knowledge. After all, how could cannabis help me when no doctor could? I began to ask questions to everyone I could find in the industry, but no one really had the answers I wanted. I wanted to know how cannabis helped me, and what I needed to take to live the best life I possibly can. However, the majority just knew how high I could get from the product they were promoting. I knew that if I wanted to know the answers, I needed to seek them out myself.

In 2020, I became certified in endocannabinoid medicine from the American Journal of Endocannabinoid Medicine. My education has allowed me to learn what my body needs to thrive with cannabinoids and help other patients do the same. I have learned how to analyze research papers and take a deep dive into all thing’s cannabis, teaching me exactly how cannabis provides the daily miracle it does for myself and so many others. The push for legalization begins with medical patients needing access, yet once it's legal, patients' needs are getting lost. There is a lack of necessary education to help patients medicate properly for their specific needs with cannabis. There is a lack of affordability for

>>>BY SARAH SCHWEFEL

those of us who need cannabis for a variety of reasons; to eat, to combat seizures, to ease unbearable pain and so much more. I share the education I’ve learned in every way possible in hopes to help patients like myself. Patients who can gain a greater quality of life with cannabis, but need guidance on how to use it. After all it is medicine. If a doctor gave you a prescription and did not explain why you should take it, or how to take it you would think that’s ludicrous. However, that is the reality medical cannabis patients face every time they go to the dispensary. I advocate for the needs of patients, as a patient, because who better than patients to explain what we need? Cannabis is a billion dollar industry and too often it is about how much one can make, rather how many people the product can help. Patients' voices need to be heard and amplified so our needs are met. Remember if it wasn’t for medical, we wouldn’t have recreational. Patients are the reason the industry began in the first place. Advocating for patients' needs while being a full-time patient takes a toll. When I go to events or speaking engagements, I am in bed for days if not weeks after recovering. I write for various publications to share about the power of cannabis, and try to get as much education as I can out in the world for other patients to find, and it can take me days to get my thoughts together with brain fog and screaming pain to make it happen. Often, I battle with feelings of defeat, because with EDS, I still have pain every second of every day. But then I remember how far cannabis has brought me. I think of the days I sat in my bedroom with no way out. I think of the darkness I fought everyday to survive and the moments of me begging my body and my mind to somehow let me live another day. I think about the constant defeat of going doctor to doctor with no help, no relief offered, and no hope. Cannabis gave me back hope; hope for tomorrow and for a better future that I was once convinced I could never have. And then I fight. I fight to have my voice heard. I share my journey with cannabis in every capacity that comes my way, because if one person can hear my story, hold on till tomorrow, and find the miracle of cannabis for themselves, somehow that makes all the suffering worth something.

>>> CBD SKINCARE Is it All Hype or Really Worth It?

>>> By SARAH SCHWEFEL

Did you know 1 in 7 adults use a CBD product to support their health and wellness? And it’s no wonder, the market is saturated with CBD products- some beneficial and some not so much. CBD skin care has become increasingly popular and even celebrities like Kim Kardashian have been boasting about the benefits. But is it all just hype, or does CBD really have a place in skin care? Let’s take a deep dive into what research has to say about CBD for our skin. The endocannabinoid system is expressed all over the body, including our skin. With that being said, there is absolutely a place for CBD in skincare. The endocannabinoid system contributes to the regulation and proliferation of cell differentiation through AEA and FAAH, and maintains homeostasis through cannabinoid signaling. This means that by applying cannabinoids to our skin, we are able to achieve healthy skin and maintain it. CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can be beneficial for an array of skin conditions and concerns. A skin care product with CBD can help reduce inflammation, and combat redness or rashes on the skin. Its antioxidant effects make it a powerful ally to preserve our skin and fight aging. Through this action it can also help with uneven skin tones and fight against free radical damage. Free radical damage is the most common cause of signs of aging, as free radicals can damage the DNA of our skin cells and destroy the collagen and elastin that provides tautness and elasticity. Overtime, free radicals not only cause aging of the skin, but can also lead to serious problems, such as cancer. When a skin cell is bombarded with too many free radicals, DNA becomes damaged. This can lead to mutations in genes that can trigger skin cancer development. Both melanoma and nonmelanoma cells have expressed CB1 and CB2 receptors that can benefit from CBD and other cannabinoids. With an average of 3.3 million people in the United States getting diagnosed with skin cancer, it is prominent that more research is done into the cytotoxic effects and preventative effects of CBD for skin cancer. Through research, CBD has also demonstrated itself as a potential therapy for a vast amount of skin conditions/diseases. The National Institute of Health has a large archive of research that well documents that CBD can be used to help patients with psoriasis, eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, scleroderma, and other skin conditions. One research study found CBD could suppress the inflammatory reaction in allergic contact dermatitis. Additionally, CBD can help patients with psoriasis, as it inhibits proliferation of keratinocytes, while also reducing inflammation and pain. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by keratinocyte hyperproliferation of epidermis. By inhibiting the proliferation of the cells, CBD has the potential to not only soothe the symptoms psoriasis patients experience but may also be able to treat it. More research is necessary to confirm; however current and emerging research shows promising results. Wearing masks (as we’ve had to do over the past few years) has introduced a vast majority of society to acne or “maskne,” and CBD can

42

help! CBD works to reduce sebum build up in the skin. An excess of sebum in the skin combined with dead skin cells is the main cause of acne and blemishes, such as black heads and white heads. CBD is a powerful ally to combat blemishes and pimples that are forming, or existing acne. It can also help to soothe the skin, reducing dryness and redness, and can aid in reducing pain and discomfort brought on by acne. When I first saw CBD skin care, I laughed to myself and thought they will put CBD in anything. After all, CBD pillow cases emerged around the same time. However, through research and trials with my own skin, I know there is definitely a place and a need for cannabinoids in skin care. Whether you are looking for a product to help keep your skin fresh, clean, and healthy or are looking to help a specific skin condition; CBD skin care can help.

HOW TOURISTS NAVIGATE LOCAL DISPENSARIES

>>> BY JIm Colantuono

Everyday, tourists land in Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport, looking to score some sort of cannabis product, and must make the hard decision of where to do their shopping. In the past few years the number of marijuana dispensaries in Las Vegas has exploded to over 50. A tourist not knowing the area well could have an incredibly hard time making up their mind on which one to visit. I recently had the chance to talk to some locals and tourists to find out what drives their choices.

“I’m going to look for the dispensary that has the most deals. I’m looking for the store that has low prices, or the best specials. I’m looking for a dispensary that has perks and promos,” Shawnie added.

Philip, is 58 years old and has been driving a taxi for Yellow Checker Star Transportation for the past four years. He says being asked by a passenger to take them to a dispensary is not out of the ordinary.

“I’m ready to go buy some Moonrocks, right now,” Daniel said with excitement. Unsure of where to go, Daniel decided asking his Uber driver would be his best bet.

She mentioned, when it comes to finding these deals she would take to the internet, check out local magazines or seek out something eye grabbing.

“Maybe about five to ten percent of my rides want me to take them to a dispensary,” Philip said. “They usually know which one they want to go to beforehand.”

Shawnie also came to Las Vegas, with cannabis on the brain. She is a 38-year-old, restaurant manager, from California, who came to town to celebrate her birthday, and was excited to smoke.

Ben is 24 years old, has been working at a local dispensary for the past year, and has recently taken on the role of store manager. He says attracting people from out of town is easy, because of their key location, and their many positive reviews online.

He went on to say, Reef, Medmen and Planet 13 dispensaries are the three that get requested the most by tourists, but sometimes he will take his passengers to a different dispensary.

“I am a flower girl,” Shawnie said with pride. “I will be doing cannabis shopping, smoking, and indulging in all that cannabis can offer. I am here for it,” she said. She wasn’t sure which dispensary she was going to end up in, but had a pretty good idea how she was going to decide.

>>> Photo by Victoria Hart

Daniel, a 37-year-old contractor from Miami, was visiting Las Vegas to help his girlfriend celebrate her 35th birthday. Only medical cannabis is legal where he lives, and said he was looking to buy some flower (Kurupt’s Moonrock, specifically). However, he wasn’t sure where to go shopping.

“We don’t really have to work as hard,” said Ben. “We’re right on route to the airport. And if you look on Google, we have lots of reviews, and we get guests that come in from that. They always tell us that they read the reviews, and that’s why they’re here.”

“Once in a while they’ll get in and ask me to just take them to the closest one, and then I’ll make the decision,” he said. All in all, it seems like tourists are leaving it up to taxi drivers, billboards and local marketing to help them with their dispensary choices. Soon enough, they will also have the luxury of local lounges to consume in, as well.

A pleasant, surprisingly dense gummy. The chew isn’t squishy or exhausting to chew. The Tropical Mango flavor isn’t extreme or nasty. Nor is the RSO that’s used to infuse. Overall, top-notch drops. For those gummy nation fans, I highly recommend adding these to your list.

What a cute collectible tin. And the little triangle bits remind me of Certs. These are micro-dosed at 5mg each, so I just tilted my head back and poured them into my candy cruncher, and chomped them up in about 5 minutes. I wanted another pack… or three. I felt the effects of 100mg. But you don't have to be so aggressive. It's not a sprint, more like a marathon.

NOVEMBER HOROSCOPES ARIES (MARCH 20 – APRIL 19) The month may start off with a bit of friction but lightens up when Sagittarius season rolls around on the 22nd when you feel your flame again. With five planets in water signs at the beginning of November you could feel like you’re being held back from your intrinsic powers. Miscommunications that appear as disagreements or betrayals will rock the boat until Mercury enters Sagittarius on the 17th. A balancing vape pen that you can use anytime to take the edge off like the 1:1 mango disposable by Stiiizy will help you stay afloat. Just take it one day at a time and don’t put too much effort into new things. It’s best if you keep to yourself and hone your skills with selfdevelopment or mastering a hobby. TAURUS (APRIL 19 – MAY 20) The full moon lunar eclipse in Taurus on November 8th will really rock your world this month! The planets involved are aligning to mix things up and bring about lasting change as the Universe recalibrates- especially as it relates to finances and security. You may surprise yourself with strong motivation to move forward and let go of outdated ideals from the past. Weigh the pros and cons of any big decisions. This shake up will likely take a toll on your physical health so make sure you spend lots of time doing your favorite thing; relaxing. A tasty concentrate like the Mob Kush Live Sugar by Verago is exactly what you need to reflect on things. It may be difficult to concentrate in the wake of these transitions, as you usually like to take your time on big moves. GEMINI (MAY 20 – JUNE 20) Geminis are spreading holiday spirit this month and have the opportunity to attend many social gatherings. This allows you to make a number of valuable connections with interesting people who may have the potential to partner with you on future business endeavors. Be intentional with everything that you say to get the most out of these times. You have the stamina to get a lot done, especially in preparing for the holidays. We recommend the Wyld 1:1 Pear CBG Gummies to keep your head floating in the clouds as you cross things off your list! Dreary weather may get your immune system feeling a bit run down so be sure to take some extra vitamins to keep yourself feeling great.

52

CANCER (JUNE 20 – JULY 22) Your hard work is paying off this month, Cancer! You are determined to reach your goals and steadily tackle things you may have been putting off for a while. Scorpio season provides the motivation

and drive to manage more than you normally do with the confidence to match! The downside is that you may be prone to possessive, jealous behavior, so just stay focused on yourself. Sleep may be difficult while you’re getting everything done, but make sure to give yourself time to rest. We recommend a high potency vape cart like Vapure’s Chill Out Sunset Mints strain to help you get some shut eye. You’ll reach a peak state of health and wellness when Jupiter moves directly in your 6th solar house on the 23rd. LEO (JULY 22 – AUGUST 22) As the weather cools down and there’s less sunlight, you start to slow down. The full moon lunar eclipse on the 8th can cause some drama in your life so keep a low profile to avoid any misunderstandings. You’ve been on a roll and November is the perfect time to recover your energy before the holidays. You may feel depressed and fatigued. Just take some time to isolate yourself from leading the pack to rest and recover. Your mind and body need a short break. A potent, healing strain like the Connor’s Comfort in CAMP’s Live Rosin will have you feeling better. As we enter Sagittarius season on the 22nd, you’ll be feeling fired up and ready to put yourself out there again. VIRGO (AUG 22 – SEPT 22) Your mind is sharp this month and you are ready to connect again! After taking a mini-hiatus from the scene, you will easily attract a lot of attention from your friends. Your communication skills are the perfect blend of honesty and support. Many people will enjoy your company and are open to considering your opinions because you deliver them in such an effective way. This helps you excel at work where your colleagues and superiors can’t help but appreciate you. You have the potential to become an inspiration and even a mentor as you comfort those around you with your words. We know you love your flower, so treat yourself to an enhanced bowl or joint with some tasty kief like the OG Kush by Vada! LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 23) You are calm, cool, and collected this month. When chaos surrounds you, you’re able to easily navigate supporting others through their problems. Your rational outlook is recognized by friends and colleagues as a strength. Although others are grateful for your advice and ability to handle tough situations with ease, you may not receive the praise you’re looking for. Be patient, it will come! When it comes to issues at home, be cautious of your delivery as your honest messages may have a Scorpio sting to them- especially with loved ones. Take time to think through your approach before you address anything serious in your personal life. Try chatting over a couple of Dutcheez Grape Hemp Blunts to keep things light.

SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 21) Expect a shake up around the 8th during the last lunar eclipse of the year in Taurus. Eclipses signal the transitions that Scorpios thrive in such as endings, revelations, and evolution. As Scorpio season continues, things seem to flow easily for you. There are many auspicious days this month that contribute to your wealth and romance. Your mental capacities are extra sharp and others will enjoy your wit and humor. You communicate well but be cautious of how you present the truth and try not to be brutally honest, serious, or cynical. It’s a great time to use your increased mental energy towards studying and gaining knowledge. We recommend a super sativa concentrate to enhance your focus like the Orange Berry Live Resin by Trendi! SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21) You’re off to a slow start this month and you find it difficult to get things done. Take it easy and don’t be too hard on yourself. Your family will be a great support system for you. Time in nature will also help you recover to get back on track. Try a preroll pack of Jack Herer sativa Dogwalkers to keep a smile on your face as you get lost in the outdoors. Limit attention to electronic devices as much as you can, as this will drain you. Although it’s in your nature to invest in your relationships over your comfort, you should treat yourself to things that make you feel good. Once Venus enters Sagittarius on the 15th, Mercury enters Sagittarius on the 17th, and the Sun enters Sagittarius on the 22nd, you’ll be feeling energized and ready for adventure again! CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19) Capricorns are back in their groove this month with an abundance of creativity and motivational energy. It’s easy for you to appreciate the little things and happiness comes easily. It’s a great time to redecorate or tackle home projects like upgrades or painting. Your life has a healthy balance between work and home. Put your mind at ease and stop overthinking things, just follow your intuition and do what feels right. You may be tempted to impulsively indulge, but we say it’s good to let loose and live a little! Especially since you’re typically the practical spender, it’s not a bad thing to treat yourself every so often when you feel the desire. The Fig Bar Live Hash Rosin Jam by Virtue is exactly what you need to relax and indulge. AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 18) Your thoughts are racing as the end of the year is catching up to you, Aquarius. You may find yourself distancing from others to focus on your own feelings. Try not to brood over things too much, overthinking things and questioning your decisions will bring you down a rabbit hole of depression. Don’t focus on your problems or what you haven’t

accomplished in 2022. When you’re down, you tend to compensate by making purchases so be cautious of unnecessary spending. Instead, you should spend time with others, not to vent, but to remind yourself of the amazing support system you have. A euphoric hybrid like the Ice Cream Cake by Phantom Farms should help make you feel better as you work through things. PISCES (FEB 18 – MAR 20) You are feeling content this month as the holiday season brings family and friends closer together, something that makes you very happy to be a part of. You are in a nostalgic mood. Your empathy and kindness is prime for giving to others, which you enjoy very much. It’s an ideal time to work on rebuilding any relationships that need special attention. People and situations that usually get under your skin don’t bother you. Your financial situation is stable and you’ve worked hard for what you have so feel free to splurge on something special for yourself like some Strawberry Punch infused flower by Fumeur.

Budtender of the Month

Las Vegas

AMANDA WOODS Budtender at 420SAHARA Amanda Woods is a budtender at 420Sahara where she has worked since the beginning of 2020. Her passion to help people is what drove her to the cannabis industry and she plans on being here for the long haul. What made you want to join the cannabis industry and what was your first industry job? As many of my fellow budtenders began their own similar journeys, I wanted to be a part of this industry to help people. My start is a very personal story to my heart. I grew up in a family that didn't shy away from cannabis consumption. My mom worked a high stress job as a nurse my whole life and when she would come home she used cannabis as a means of relaxation and to help with pain management. Later on as I got older my mom would confide in me that she had developed an opioid addiction. I wanted to help in any way that I could. We went back to basics essentially and started using cannabis as a medicine. I saw with my own eyes my mom regained her life back. I wanted to be a part of something that had more potential to help than to harm. I rerouted my career path from walking in my mom's footsteps as a nurse and jumped into the cannabis industry. I'm still currently at my first industry job that I started back in the beginning of 2020. Have your views/thoughts about cannabis changed since becoming a budtender? Most definitely! I can definitely say that I have so much more respect for the behind-the-scenes, if you will. There is so much hard work and true passion that people don't realize that goes into your cannabis before you partake in consumption.

What is the most satisfying part of budtending? My favorite part is the comeback. I love when my patients return with a smile and that they are so happy to work with me again because I was able to help them the last time to find the perfect medicine for their needs. Yes, this is THC and you will get high, but people come to me because they can trust that I got them in whatever they are going through. What is your favorite topic to educate patients on? Terps! I love when a patient comes in THC hunting, communicating that they are not feeling as medicated as they could and what they should do to fix the problem. Some patients are misinformed and think the higher the THC the better, but that is far from the case. Lady cannabis has so much to offer besides THC. Terpenes are one of those offerings. Terpenes add to the flavor, they add to the effects, I would categorize terpenes to be just as important as THC is to the cannabis consumer. If you had to give advice to a new budtender or someone looking to be a budtender, what would it be? Hard work pays off. You will start here and you are the only limit as to where you can go. Do not let someone tell you that you can't or don't know what you are talking about, because this is a new and fluid industry full of innovators. We are the rebel stoner kids that have the voice to say and stand for cannabis. Enjoy and respect the industry and what it has to offer. Do you prefer a high THC content or a really good terpene profile? I'm all about the terpenes, especially because I switch back and forth from dabs and flower. I'll experience high THC from a dab and turn around and smoke flower and if the terpene profile isn't there that flower just isn't as impactful. What have you been smoking on? I just finished a combo of Chernobyl and Head Cheese, a very funky concoction. Very delightful! I'm about to dab on some Banana Temple budder, yum!

Let's Talk with Tee

>>>>> Cannabis of Today: Adolescence, Regulations, Potency Everyone is always shopping for the highest THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) percentage. Some people look for terps (Terpenes) when shopping for cannabis. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a person who grew up in 1950’s-1980’s say, “I can’t smoke the stuff they’re smoking these days, it’s way too strong. We had just regular old schwag in my day, I can’t handle the stuff they’re growing these days.” Potency has surely increased, especially in the past 15 years. Growers mainly in the States, are in a green rush of who can grow the highest percentage of THC. But can too much THC be a bad thing?

are starting to recognize these consequences now, especially since potency has increased dramatically. In recent years, emergency room visits have risen in adolescents and young adults. With symptoms ranging from severe projectile vomiting, and psychiatric symptoms from the use of cannabis. Long-term heavy use of cannabis is beginning to show negative health effects, such as hyperemesis syndrome, psychosis and addiction. Research has linked long-term heavy cannabis use impairs shortterm memory and motor coordination, CUD, cognitive impairment, increased depression and anxiety (Pacula et al.,2022).

Cannabis products with high potency have shown links between potency and anxiety, CUD (Cannabis use disorder), psychosis, hyperemesis syndrome, and memory and coordination issues. Depression and dependence are likely to occur with long-term, frequent use of high-potency products. Currently, there are no policies or regulations that discourage or prevent excessive use. When it comes to product development and formulation, there isn’t enough data nor the health effects of cannabis use. Especially when it comes to highly concentrated products such as extracts and high-potency flower. Connecticut and Vermont are the only States in the United States that currently have regulations set on limits of potency for concentrates and flower (Pacula et al.,2022).

Adolescent Access

Current Regulations & Potency

When cannabis was legalized by states in America, we were under the impression that it would have strict regulations like alcohol does. Serving sizes of dosing has been regulated in Nevada at 100mg/g per item/ package sold. For instance, infused candies are generally dosed at 10mg/g per piece (if not 2.5mg/g or 5mg/g). However, there still isn’t sufficient research on what the adequate dose of cannabis should be. Shouldn’t it be more concerning to consumers that the current regulations are not built from science-backed data? The biggest concern is that we may potentially see health consequences from the lack of responsibility in regulations. Doctors and emergency rooms all across the country

58

In 2020-2022 there was an uptick of minors purchasing cannabis from dispensaries in California. A study was held in 2021 by Dr. Shi of USC Schaeffer Center stating that they found 67.9% of dispensaries failed to comply with age-limit signage prior to entering the store. Only 82% checked ID prior to entry. Whereas 85.1% check ID after entry. Here in Nevada, there are stricter compliance regulations when it comes to entry. ID’s are usually checked by security prior to entering, and each person is checked in with their validated ID as soon as they step foot in the door. Cameras are in place and are operated by the state, which is controlled by the CCB (Cannabis Compliance Board). They will fine/ cease operations if they witness anything that does not fall within compliance. According to the Nevada Marijuana Registry, there are nearly 1400 currently registered medical marijuana patients that are adolescents. Although this is the only registry that is documented, this is not accounting for the consumers who purchase cannabis illegally.

Cannabis Use from Adolescence to Long-Term

Adolescent consumption is of great concern because there are adverse effects since their brain is still growing neurobiologically. Cannabis can alter the brain’s neurodevelopment. (Romero et al., 1997). Cannabis can cause disruptions in signaling since the brain of adolescents are still sensitive. Adolescent cannabis use also has

>>>>>BY TEE MORENO

shown in studies that the cortical area tends to lose thickness (known as “thinning”) similarly as it does as we age. The layer of the cortical areas requires thickness, as it is necessary to facilitate communication of neurons. Thinning of this area was shown among lifelong cannabis users. Brain imaging showed thinning occurred even worse than imaging of age related thinning. Cortical areas are important for problem solving, emotion, coordination, somatosensory information (which involves touch, temperature, and pain). These areas are located in prefrontal, motor, and somatosensory areas of the cortex. ADHD (Attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder) also showed significant association among long-term cannabis users (Albaugh et al., 2021). These are just a few of the brain deficits that occur with cannabis use long-term from adolescence. Cannabis use by adolescents has also shown to reduce motivation and increased depression symptoms (Pacheco-Colón et al., 2021). In another study, results showed that long-term cannabis users who began consumption during adolescence, had an increased likelihood to develop anxiety disorder, have psychotic experiences, and partake in other illicit drug use (Hines et al., 2020).

Potency

In recent years cannabis potency (THC concentration) has increased to percentages beyond what we could have ever imagined. Who knew that the day would come where you could walk into a dispensary and purchase flower that is 24%-31% THC. (Side note: some growers argue that it’s impossible to cultivate that high of potency). The fact that there are concentrates (vapes and extracts) that are over 80% THC should raise alarm. Instead, there is a high percentage of consumers who seek the highest percentage available in dispensaries. I have heard a lot of people say that their tolerance is high, that they have to smoke high potency products to even feel any effect. Let’s get to the science on this. A study was held by Karoly and colleagues this year that was done on both female and male participants who are regular cannabis users of flower and extracts.

Tolerance of the effects in frequent cannabis users showed that there are differing levels of intoxication. This area definitely needs more research as to what variables create the level differences (biomarkers). Increased impairment was shown after consuming cannabis flower or extracts. Males showed more impairment on the balance tasks, whereas, women showed greater impairment on motion tracking (Karoly et al., 2022). Evidence suggests that use of high-potency cannabis flower or extracts may be associated with addiction and mental health (Hines et al., 2020).

Limited Regulation

Although there are regulations in place, there isn’t enough regulation on potency restrictions. Aside from Metrc, creating a track and trace system that could also limit a person to a daily limit state wide (hopefully one day, Nation-wide) so that individuals have a more adequate and responsible limit. Not just a “one retail location” limit. In my experience I have witnessed the state enter a retail shop or facility only when they were tipped by a disgruntled employee. Yet, at any given moment I can expect to see a food inspector enter a restaurant or food service establishment at any time without warning. Or ABC (Alcohol and Beverage Control) walk in any bar or venue without warning, making sure they’re checking ID’s properly and not serving underaged patrons. Potency limits may indeed reduce the developing mental health disorders or cannabis use disorders (Hines et al., 2020). There needs to be more accountability at a state level if they’re going to regulate it. There should be scientists and medical professionals working with the state determining biomarkers that are responsible. For goodness sakes, all workers in the cannabis industry have to pay $175 for each card that enables them to work in the industry. Some people have paid for all of the cards just to be in compliance. Where are those funds going? Being that potency is at an all time high, this should raise concern if too much THC is worse than we even think. As they always say, do everything in moderation. Perhaps that should now be considered when consuming cannabis as well. Find me on IG @CannaPsychMd “Educator of the Year” Las Vegas Cannabis Awards 202 References Albaugh, M.
