Editor’s Note Welcome to the first issue of Vegas Cannabis Magazine. If you are reading this, you are either a cannabis supporter or perhaps, just a curious member of our community. Either way, it is my hope that you are able to absorb the information provided within this magazine with an open-mind and an open-heart. It is our intent with this and future issues to inform and enlighten our readers about the legal and medical issues affecting those choosing to use cannabis to treat illness. We have local Nevadans as well as people around the country

fighting for their lives with a limited number of natural treatment options being offered by the medical community. And, for most, it will not make an impact until someone close to them is faced with a medical crisis of their own. Hopefully, the articles within these pages leave you hungry for additional information. And, hopefully, one day, you are able to pass this along to someone that just might benefit from it. We welcome your comments and questions and encourage you to visit our Facebook page

Cannabis Activism & the Changing Laws in Nevada By: Kurt Duchac One cannot deny that the winds of change are definitely blowing in a more lenient and permissive stance in the nation regarding cannabis. While the Holder memo was decades in the making it came as a surprise to many who are not in the cannabis movement. Many people are looking to become involved in the changing laws in Nevada and the nation because of this positive wave of publicity. While many more states are jumping on board to allow medical use in their state, we in Nevada may be the first state to reclassify cannabis. On August 21, 2014, the Advisory Commission of the Administration of Justice’s Subcommittee on the Medical Use of Marijuana held their final meeting. One of the items to come out of the meeting was the recommendation of the commission to direct the State of Nevada to reclassify

marijuana from a schedule I controlled substance to a schedule II. This drew heated outbursts from the advocates present pushing for declassification of the plant. The motion was made by former Assemblywoman and present Clark County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani. Giunchigliani stated that moving to anything other than a schedule II controlled substance at this time would bring in opposition by the federal government and shut down the state medical marijuana program. If the recommendation makes it out of the 2014-2015 legislative session, this would make Nevada the first state in the nation to reclassify marijuana. Marijuana DUI tests were also addressed with the commission recommending that the tests be performance based. Advocates for changing

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • October 2014 • 6

Nevada’s laws on driving under the influence of marijuana urged the commission to change the test from one which detects cannabis, to one which measures performance. Commissioners on the Administration of Justice’s Subcommittee agreed with a 9-3 vote that a bill draft request be modeled after California’s law and submitted for the 2015 session. If marijuana is found in a person’s system in California, the prosecution must prove that the person in question was too impaired from cannabis to drive safely. Jennifer Solas, W.E.C.A.N. president, took the lead for patient advocacy by recommending that patients retain their ability to grow in Nevada. The recommendation was accepted and if approved in the upcoming legislative session, the law will be up for review again in 2018.

Jennifer was appointed to the Advisory Commission of the Administration of Justice’s Subcommittee on the Medical Use of Marijuana because of her years of work in the Nevada medical cannabis community and her knowledge of the community patient base in southern Nevada. She is the founder and current president of Wellness Education Cannabis Advocates of Nevada or W.E.C.A.N., the largest patient advocacy group located in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the easiest way to become informed and involved in this state. Wecan is a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit that first started as a Meetup group. It currently has nearly 600 members. This is the 6th year that W.E.C.A.N. has been in existence in Nevada. meetup.com/WeCan702/ is free to join and provides a platform for people to post and discuss ideas in a controlled environment. W.E.C.A.N. has a yearly calendar with events that are regular and consistent features. One of the events that they participate in is First Friday which is a city celebrated event; W.E.C.A.N. has had a booth at this venue for 3 years on a monthly basis. They provide volunteers for the main event on a consistent basis in order to bring cannabis education to the public. This is a way to reach out to people who don’t know about cannabis or are curious about all the pro-cannabis news stories and shows on TV. For those who want to get their medical marijuana

card or find out about using cannabis for medicinal reasons, W.E.C.A.N. has monthly Patients 1st meetings in Las Vegas and in Pahrump with an eye on expanding this model to other cities in Nevada. In these meetings people can talk about any needs in the community; topics include how to obtain a medical marijuana card, where to get clones or clippings, garden advice, patient community needs and a wide variety of other news in the city or country that is relevant to patient advocacy. They have speakers to talk about activism and advise how one can become involved in the cannabis community. These meetings are designed to lift the stigma of cannabis use in general and provide patients a way to get to know each other in a neutral environment. Visit www.WeCan702.org for a starting point and inquiry page that has a group calendar and

links to the meetup pages for event sign-ups. The website also links to our Facebook page, https://www.facebook. com/wecan702. This page has over 100,000 “likes” and is growing organically every day. W.E.C.A.N. also hosts a weekly radio show called Nevada’s Cannabis News. Past guests have included Tick Seigerblom, Michelle Fiore, Cannabis union leader Dan Rush, former DEA agents and many other timely and relevant people in the cannabis world. W.E.C.A.N. will be marching in the Halloween Parade for the 5th year in a row, come out in costume and march for a great cause. If you are looking to become involved in cannabis activism in Nevada this is a great place to start! Remember to be the change you would like to see in Cannabis activism and keep fighting the good fight!

Meet Wallace Rose: Fighting Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer with Cannabis Oil By: Dr. Kathleen Smith When I first started examining patients for their state medical marijuana cards, it was after considerable review of the medical value of marijuana. I had been an emergency medicine physician for 24 years. During that time I saw the devastation that narcotic prescriptions were doing to our patients. Patients young and old would arrive in the emergency room in full cardiopulmonary arrest. They had stopped breathing in their sleep. WHY? Because the dose of narcotics needed to quell their pain was at the critical level, patients would have a cardiopulmonary arrest brought on by the narcotics depressant effects on respirations. I decided we needed better tools to alleviate pain. I had the traditional training most medical doctors receive in this country and naturally it painted marijuana in a negative light. I decided I needed to

review its potential to help numerous medical problems including pain. In the next few articles I plan to highlight some of the amazing medicinal properties of marijuana as well as the patients I have been fortunate enough to assist. In this article I would like to tell you the story of Wallace Rose, A.K.A. “Buddy”. When I first met Buddy, he was in critical condition. He had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer. His Oncologist had given him three to six weeks to live which spurred his son to bring him in for assistance in obtaining a medical marijuana card. Up until this point, Buddy had never used any illegal drugs and he was not wanting to do anything illegal. He was faced with quite a decision and he was to a point where he would try anything that could possibly help him

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • October 2014 • 8

fight his cancer. Buddy’s eventual treatment would come in the form of “Phoenix Tears”, or as known to many, cannabis oil. Buddy was emaciated, his body was weak, his skin color was ashen and gray, and he needed his son’s assistance just to walk. It was late November in 2013, and he wasn’t expected to live until Christmas. Buddy decided to have an early Christmas and sadly enough, a going away party. His friends and family came in from all over. To Buddy’s surprise, in his wife’s stocking, some magical vials of “Phoenix Tears” oil appeared. With this as his last hope, he started taking the oil each day by putting a little bit on an Oreo cookie and eating it. My direction to him was to use as much as he could tolerate as no dosing standards are currently available. Buddy slowly started to get better. His energy improved, his color, his appetite and sleep began returning to a healthy level. By February 2014 his cancer cell count was normalizing and his metastatic tumors were

regressing. Amazingly, by May, most of the tumors were gone and his cancer cell count was normal. Buddy was back driving and working full-time and when he came into my office to thank me, he didn’t look like the same man.

Dr. Smith did her residency and board certification in Family Practice. After practicing many years in both Family Practice and Emergency Medicine, she ended up taking boards in Emergency Medicine as well. She then spent the next 24 years practicing Emergency Medicine. This led to an interest in finding healthier medical

I ordered a P.E.T. Scan of the whole body a few weeks ago and it revealed a few active sites in his liver and pancreas but overall a miraculous improvement. Buddy is still taking his “Phoenix Tears” oil and we are all anticipating a full recovery from Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer. Buddy, his wife and his children have been given such a wonderful gift, of ongoing life. Something we all may take for granted, but I am sure Buddy will tell you to treasure each day as a gift. The healing powers of marijuana have been studied in Germany and recent National Institute of Health articles published reproduce some of the German findings. It’s apparent that CBD in marijuana is able to destroy the cancer cells, blood supply and cause tumor cell death. Much more research needs to be done in this vital area. It is my hope that stories like Wallace Rose will help prompt this research. Dr. Kathleen Smith earned her Doctor of Medicine in 1987 from the University of Louisville. Since then,

UPDATE:

It has been a few weeks since the writing of this article and upon checking with Buddy’s current caregiver, we were

given the following update. When Buddy began using “Phoenix Tears” he obtained the medicine from Colorado and it was working beautifully. Since traveling to another state for reliable medicine was impossible, Buddy had no choice but to turn to the local shops. At the time there were only 2 locations advertising this miracle medicine known as “Phoenix Tears.” Unfortunately for Buddy and many other patients, the item that these delivery services carried was not medicine (next month’s issue will feature an article entitled Is Your Medicine Really Medicine?.) After a few weeks of ingesting a black tar like substance, Buddy started to become ill again and his troubles returned with a vengeance. When a patient stops treatment mid-cycle, the cancer returns. It is important for patients, caregivers, and manufactures to understand what “Phoenix Tears “(a.k.a. Simpson Oil) is and how it works. Currently, Buddy has a steady source of oil but is still struggling since he needs triple the amount to reverse the damage of the fake oil. Buddy met with a concentrate maker from the Midwest and his story moved them like no has before. He now has access to reliable oil and his donations are being met 100%.

Product Spotlight COMPTON GRINDERS

KUSH CREAMS Our Thoughts: Kush Creams offers quite an array of products. From creams to tinctures to medicated shampoo, they provide products that are all-natural and beneficial. We had the pleasure of trying the aloe-based face and eye cream, the triple infused OG Kush cream and the Organic Perma Frost. Let us begin by saying that Kush Creams has many scents to choose from and the OG Kush smells divine, as in spread it all over your body and reapply as often as possible divine. Have a small skin irritation? Suffer from “Vegas feet?” Kush Creams will solve your problems. Have minor muscle aches and pains? The Organic Perma Frost is your answer. It smells minty and gets really cold upon application but washes off your hands completely with no lingering smell or icy-hotness. We love that the Kush Creams are all-natural; as an added bonus, they are also lab tested and doctor recommended. Kush Creams uses highly medicinal emu oil for the base of all topical products. Emu oil is the only oil that penetrates down into your epidermal layer, delivering the rich medication directly where you need it, versus spreading it superficially on the surface skin as with salves and balms, clogging your pores and preventing the medication from penetrating to the area where you need it. Their lotion, however, absorbs into your skin and you are able to reapply repeatedly to increase your dosage. Emu oil is the secret to Kush Creams’ delivery system. For more information, visit www. kushcreams.com.

Our Thoughts: No, a Compton Grinder is not a dance move; but it should be. If you are using regular household scissors to cut your flowers, STOP IMMEDIATELY! Don’t use your hands either, you are wasting time and losing valuable particles. One of the best products on the market for grinding are these heavy-duty, machineprecisioned masterpieces made in a California machine shop. Compton Grinders are designed with a nug drop and multiple layers to catch and filter, down to every trichome. Top shelf flowers need a top shelf grinder. Compton Grinders are the epitome of precision and excellence. They are designed to uphold the most efficient grinding techniques, making them the ultimate grinding tools. With paramount quality and designed for the comfort of the user, Compton Grinders provide a smooth and effortless experience with results that will assure satisfaction. All Compton Grinders come with a lifetime guarantee and an amazing customer service staff to take care of your every need. For more information, visit them online at www. comptongrinders. com.

Product Spotlight Solar Hit Pipe Our Thoughts: Smoking by way of our sun.

Have you ever been camping and wanted to play the role of a caveman by starting a fire with just two sticks? Me too, but I never actually did. The idea of starting a fire from scratch is very impressive and we were apprehensive to see if this product really worked. Using nothing more than the sun, the Solar Hit Pipe burns the trichomes at a perfect temperature. The flowers never char to an amber, so each hit barely dents your nug. Get in touch with nature, go daycamping or take a mid-day hike with the Solar Hit Pipe – you will be glad you did. The Solar Hit Pipe was created in 2000, in the beautiful mountain resort town of Big Bear Lake, California, one of the sunniest places in the world! Big Bear Lake even has its own solar observatory. Topically Speaking...

Vegas Cannabis Magazine Chats with Megan Schwarting from Kush Creams This month, Vegas Cannabis Magazine had the privilege of speaking to Megan Schwarting. Megan, along with her husband Ben are the founders of awardwinning Kush Creams based out of Washington State. Here is what she had to say: VCM: Were you in the marijuana business prior to Kush Creams? Megan: Yes, both my husband and I were successful medical growers prior to starting Kush Creams. We have both grown and infused cannabis steadily since we were teenagers. VCM: Are you a native of Washington?

Megan: I am a native. My family homesteaded our beach property before Washington became a state, over 125 years ago. My ancestors were officially awarded the property for bravery years later. VCM: What do you like best about living in Washington? Megan: The best thing about being a Washingtonian is still having the freedom to exercise that bravery. Whether you are talking about medical, legal/ recreational or the black market, Washington has one of the most thriving, diverse and abundant cannabis industries in the world. The northwest has always been known for quality.

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • October 2014 • 14

VCM: What led you and Ben to start Kush Creams? Megan: We had three beautiful baby girls, which are now kindergarten, first and second grade. They are amazing little human beings and we wanted a life we could be transparent with, without giving up the lifestyle we had long such become accustomed to. We have been helping people live a better quality of life for years and decided to commercialize it once we started our family and make it official. VCM: Do you make products other than creams? Megan: We sure do! We have won a dozen or more trophies at

Cannabis Cups for some of the following products: medicated dental floss, medicated toothpicks, mouthwash, and toothache tincture. Our medicinal tinctures include Witch Doctor Pain Drops tincture and the cough throat elixir, Snorenz. We do a hair line that includes chemotherapy shampoo, conditioners, brain freezes, and scalp sprays. We have done personal lubricants that were incredibly successful and glaucoma eye pads. We have also produced pharmaceutical-grade n-butane hash oil and medicated “Kush Berries” gummies. And, we can’t forget the Phunny Hunny! We have produced and marketed a multitude of products over the years; however, we are so successful with our creams that they take the center stage. VCM: Are you also a cannabis activist? Megan: Yes indeed! I petitioned for the Medical Marijuana bills in both Washington and Oregon that passed in 1996 and 1998. My husband Ben actually moved out to the West Coast so he didn’t get arrested for his activism in South Dakota. Together we fight daily for the plant we both respect so much. And best of all we are contributing three little, aware, future activists to the scene. VCM: Any specific challenges that you have encountered as a woman in this industry? Megan: It is definitely a male dominated industry - no different than I had come up in slanging

weed as a female dealer my whole life. I am lucky to have an amazing support network of female “cannaprenuers “ around me to collaborate with and support each other in this male dominant industry. I am a member of multiple cannabis professional women’s groups in Washington. VCM: How did Kush Creams do at this year’s Cannabis Cub? Megan: This was the first Cannabis Cup we entered and didn’t win! We were just proud to promote our position as the nationwide leader in topical cannabis products. VCM: We hear there are big things coming to Kush Creams’ future. Can you let us in on what the future holds? Megan: We are jazzed about the future here at Kush Creams. We are rooted in the medical scene, gracing the shelves of over 350+ dispensaries and are now Washington state recreational and legal cannabis producer/processor applicants! We are excited to hit the general marketplace next year with our new line of CBD creams. About Kush Creams:

Kush Creams is the premier source in quality topical cannabis. Through modern research it has been discovered that the medicinal qualities of cannabis are mainly absorbed through your skin cells. This knowledge has been used for the past 6000 years for many

different ailments. Your body’s receptors are divided into two different types of responders cb1 (the euphoric) and cb2 (the medicinal). Your cb1 receptors are found mainly in your brain, responding to the thc. But your cb2 receptors are mainly found in your skin cells, spleen cells, stomach, liver, bones and immune cells and respond to the cbd and cbn cannabinoids. These non-pyscho-active cannabinoids are where the pain relieving qualities of cannabis lie; the antiinflammatory, anti-fungal, pain relieving properties of cannabis. When one is trying to find the pain relieving qualities of cannabis and smoking it, it is only a euphoric distraction….as your brain does not have cb2 receptors…your skin does! Kush Creams chooses to use highly medicinal emu oil for the base of all topical products. Around the end of 2009, Dinafem began to incorporate auto-flowering genetics into their line of seeds. By 2010, Dinafem had developed 10 new strains, including 3 autoflowering strains. Now Dinafem offers about 60 strains, and nearly half of those are autoflowering strains. While some auto-flowering

strains are lackluster and disappointing, Dinafem has gained a reputation for consistent, high-yield and potent auto-flowering strains. In fact, Dinafem now offers auto-flowering versions of all their most popular and awardwinning strains. Dutch Passion Award-winning strains: • • • • • • • • • • •

Dutch Passion was founded in 1987 by Henk van Dalen, and has been developing strains and selling seeds ever since. Their mission statement is to be constantly upgrading their genetics so that they always offer some of the best and most cutting-edge strains, offering both feminized and regular seeds. The award-winning genetics by Dutch Passion in the list above have been bred into many other famous and well-known strains, including strains from Barney’s Farm and famous clone-only strains like Skywalker OG. In 1998 Dutch Passion made a major breakthrough for cannabis growers everywhere by developing a process to create “feminized” seeds. Feminized seeds produce only female bud-growing plants

(instead of 50% male plants), and are created by breeding two female plants together. This feminization process is now used around the world by breeders everywhere. Many growers (myself included) grow with only feminized seeds, and we have Dutch Passion to thank for pioneering this technique! Nirvana Award-winning strains: • • • • • •

Nirvana’s founder was working at an Amsterdam grow shop in the late 1980s when he became inspired to start developing his own cannabis strains. He spent years travelling and collecting marijuana genetics, then started experimenting, growing, crossbreeding and developing new cannabis strains. Nirvana (as we know it today) was officially opened in 1995, with a physical location in Amsterdam. If you don’t want to order their seeds by mail, you can visit their shop in person! In addition to their line of topquality strains, Nirvana has been sending seeds discreetly through the mail for years and has earned a reputation as one of the most stealthy online seed sources. Reserva Privada is a subbranch of DNA Genetics. DNA Genetics was founded in Amsterdam in 2004 and has won over 50 awards from prestigious cannabis events. DNA Genetics (including their sub-branch Reserva Privada) does not ship directly to the US. Therefore US residents must get their Reserva Privada strains from a seed bank that does ship to the United States. Reserva Privada strains were created by a group of experienced breeders from California, and most of Reserva Privada’s genetics are indigenous to the US west coast. However, the actual shop for DNA Genetics is located in Amsterdam. Reserva Privada’s potent strains have been well received by the growing community and at Cannabis Cups. Out of a handful of strains, nearly a third have won an award (or multiple awards). They only make relatively small batches of seeds, so it can be tough to get a hold of their most famous strains. 5 Amazing Things You Didn’t Know About Marijuana By: Jack Giddingson

It’s no coincidence that marijuana legalization support has surged with the growth of social media. The voices of the Reefer Madness era are silenced daily as studies and testimonials continue pouring in about this often misunderstood plant. Ignorance still remains however, and this fight won’t be won without continued education of the masses. It takes one fact that hits home to sway someone’s opinion. Maybe one of the following will do that for you. Here are five things about marijuana you may not have known: 1. THC and CBD, marijuana’s primary cannabinoids, are both cancer killers. No, I’m not talking about using marijuana to help manage cancer’s effects. It’s actually

anti-cancer. Recent research out of Spain suggests that THC, marijuana’s psychoactive ingredient, kills brain cancer cells. Study co-author Guillermo Velasco claims that when THC was applied to cancerous brain tissue, the cancer cells were killed while healthy cells were left alone. CBD apparently does the same; a pair of scientists from California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco demonstrated the cannabinoid’s ability to stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer. Imagine if this plant were discovered in a jungle two weeks ago. What would the news be saying? The CBD article goes as far as to say the breakthrough could “potentially alter the fatality of the disease forever.” The lack of media coverage for this is astounding, but that doesn’t diminish the

research. 2. Marijuana triggers neurogenesis. Layman’s terms: It leads to brain cell growth. Wait....marijuana is supposed to kill brain cells, right? Wrong. The roots of the marijuanakills-brain-cells myth are deep despite the lack of credible evidence. The original study supporting this notion is questionable at best and recent research suggests exactly the opposite. In 2005, a study showed cannabinoids’ ability to promote neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus, the brain region responsible for many important brain functions including mood and memory. The authors also cited antianxiety and anti-depressant effects that accompany the neurogenesis. This explains

why people across California, Colorado, Washington and other marijuana-friendly states often turn to the herb for a moodboost instead of pharmaceutical drugs. It also supports research that marijuana helps improve cognitive function in bipolar disorder patients. This brings us to our next fact.... 3. Suicide rates are lower in areas where medical marijuana is available. A Denver state-level study analyzed the statistical trend of suicide after introduction of medical marijuana. From the study: “Our results suggest that the passage of a medical marijuana law is associated with an almost 5% reduction in total suicide rate, an 11% reduction in the suicide rate of age 20-29 males, and a 9% reduction in the suicide rate of 30-39 males.” It’s interesting this hasn’t become mainstream data in a country so focused on suicide prevention. Not surprisingly, one of the main reasons cited by the study’s authors for the decrease was connected to the at-risk population (20 and 30-something males) replacing alcohol with marijuana. This data makes the strictness of Illinois’ new medical marijuana policy even more laughable. “Don’t let usage get out of control! Less people might commit suicide!” But what about the physical effects? 4. There is zero evidence that marijuana causes

significant lung damage.

Freedom in Self-Healing The Patient’s Perspective

By: Lyme Mohawk

Cannabis Oil: Shifting the Paradigm What is important to know about the cannabis movement right now? What makes it different now than the efforts of the past 60 years? Social media is one element helping us to reach an experiential and informational critical mass, but the major difference is the paradigm shift that has ensued since the modern emergence of cannabis oil. Now infamous Canadian cannabis hero Rick Simpson began speaking loud and proud about healing his chronic tinnitus and skin cancer with an oil made from the cannabis plant’s precious resin. Like many of us with relentless pain and discomfort in some form, Rick pursued every known treatment through the usual routes of western medicine only to be left with a handful of pills, side effects, and an unresolved problem. So many of us with

chronic health problems know the deal. Rick discovered that cannabis brought him relief and began using it in the form of highly concentrated ingestible oil. After healing himself, he began sharing this information with friends and it spread like wildfire. Many he knew were being cured of cancers and other serious diseases with the oil. In 2007, he released his You Tube sensation “Run from the Cure” which subsequently created a tsunami of deep cultural inquiry into the true healing capabilities of cannabis. While watching the film, I literally had a cannabis-scented earthquake go off in my brain. I am cut from the most progressive of fabrics, but never had I considered cannabis could do anything more than bring much needed and profound relief. This was certainly enough a reason to make this plant legal for access to all who

Vegas Cannabis Magazine • October 2014 • 20

needed it. But there was more to the story. Due to a 12-year battle with chronic Lyme disease, my own body was ravaged by antibiotics and pain killers, and my stomach had taken note. Daily nausea and lack of appetite were worsening for me. Eating became difficult, and these particular complications to an already debilitating disease were making my quality of life extremely bleak. I was using cannabis for relief by smoking it at the time, but I was not being healed by it in any way. Along came this new idea, a fresh way to look at things, a shift in perspective about what marijuana was all about. The common understanding that cannabis could bring relief was instantly expanded into a view that its application went far beyond the realm of relief into a spectrum of actual healing and disease reversal.

This was a profoundly different conversation. This began my own journey to access and utilize this medicine as an oil. I have learned more than I could imagine about its potential. I was met with untold obstacles when beginning this quest to heal myself. I knew I had to become an official patient, but feared the federal implications to this move. I was excited to try the oil, but had no way of accessing it, and I became deflated. Additionally, the costs of both marijuana and the costs to become a legal patient were prohibitive for me as a person living on a fixed disability income. What most people do not understand is that poverty and illness go hand and hand. They are interrelated issues. When you are struck with a chronic and debilitating disease, regardless of your ambition or education, you can quickly become part of the growing poverty class. If the plant were legal, I would not have faced all of these difficulties in access. Over time, with the support of local advocacy group W.E.C.A.N. and fellow Las Vegas patients, I became a legal and empowered patient. I learned to grow, make and utilize cannabis as concentrates and infusions, and even started juicing the leaves for their nonpsychoactive healing benefits. The innumerable ways to utilize the plant medicinally makes apparent the federal scheduling of the herb is in stark contrast to known truths. Schedule 1 is

defined as “drugs with currently no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse”. Cannabis is not only medicinal, but it is inherently harmless, and it gives hope to the many who are suffering. Utilizing this medicine in its more concentrated variations has greatly improved my quality of life where nothing else could. I have healed from a great deal of the nausea that plagued me, I have experienced relief of pain, and find I am having more of a stable energy to live life with. I no longer have to take pain medication because of my use of cannabis. It stimulates an appetite when I would otherwise have none, and there has been nothing my physician can give me to address this. I was mostly bed bound before cannabis, and now have significantly more active days. So I say to the powers that be, as they sit on laws that keep patients disempowered from their own healing, “those who say it cannot be done, should not get in the way of those who are doing it”. I stand as witness to the many who have healed from this medicine, some from terminal illness. I also bear witness daily, via my work with the Lyme community, to thousands who cannot access it and suffer on in agonizing situations for fear of the law. Rick Simpson’s triumphant message in “Run from the Cure” shifted the way we orient our consciousness to cannabis as individuals and as a society. This shift

is hitting the fan all across the globe, and the beauty of it is that you can’t unwring a bell. The message is one of deeply unparalleled freedom and personal empowerment in self-healing. The era of “reefer madness” propaganda is finally coming to an end thanks to social media and the human element of experience with this medicine. Big business is quickly scrambling to profit off of this burgeoning industry, and if it has its way, will leave patients like me in the dust. At the heart of the issue is our right as patients to grow the plant so that it remains accessible to the poorest and sickest among us. This is a people’s movement, born out of the bravery of souls who dared to question the status quo that claimed cannabis had no medicinal value. And still it stands illegal in the land of the free. Now that the truth is out, should we really give the power to access this plant to the very ones who denied its value and truth in the first place? I think not. Perhaps the more relevant cultural inquiry cannabis is asking us to make is one we have been asking ourselves quietly, but need to be asking very loudly: Are we free? Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil By; Corinne Tobias

This recipe is the easiest on the planet. Sure, we can debate over decarboxylation and temperatures that destroy CBDs. We can talk about plunging the warm oil in a cold water bath to pull out impurities and improve taste, but that all comes later, following is a simple way for beginners to make cannabis infused coconut oil.

Tips:

it cool a bit before beginning the process again with your Crockpot on the lowest setting. • If you don’t have a Crockpot, you can make the oil in a pot on the stove. Just follow the same instructions and make sure that your heat source is on low. • You don’t have to finely grind up the cannabis (I think it

• Try to use organic shake or trim whenever possible. • Make smaller batches using a 1:1 ratio, making sure to use enough coconut oil to cover the weed completely. • If your oil ever begins to smoke, remove from heat immediately and let Vegas Cannabis Magazine • October 2014 • 22

makes it harder to strain, and doesn’t improve flavor or potency), but break it up a bit before you add it to the coconut oil. • Have fun! Don’t fret over your canna-oil when it’s in the pot. People on the internet make this much more complicated then it has to be. This is a simple process and it should be enjoyable, not stressful.

Recipe: 1. Melt 1 1/8 cup coconut oil in a Crockpot on low. 2. Add 1 cup organic cannabis trim, shake or buds (about 1/4 oz.) Stir every half hour or so. After 2-3 hours of heating and steeping, turn off the Crockpot and allow the oil to cool before moving onto the

Edibles next step. 3. Set up your strainer so it fits snugly in a container. Line with a large piece of cheesecloth. 4. Slowly pour plant matter and oil into the strainer. 5. Using a string or twist tie, gather the cheesecloth around the plant matter and secure. 6. Squeeze and remember to save this satchel to make High Chai Tea (recipe available online and in my cookbook.) 7. Pour oil into a pint-size jar and place in the fridge until cool. Seal with a lid. Store in refrigerator or in a cool, dark place. Use the oil to spread on toast, make other Wake & Bake recipes with it, rub it on your achy body parts, and enjoy. Visit Sedona Looking to sit back, relax and unwind? Just four hours away, are the beautiful red sandstone formations of Sedona, Arizona. My childhood memories of Arizona painted a picture similar to Las Vegas’ hot, dry desert. It was quite a surprise realizing that although Arizona is filled with desert scenery, it is also surrounded by beautiful mountainous red rocks which sit atop powerful vortexes which are believed to unleash an energy field felt by all who come in contact. People travel from around the world to experience these forces, to heal spiritually, and to enjoy the outdoor adventures that Sedona has to offer. Our lodging was a bit off the beaten path near Boynton Canyon. As we neared Enchantment Resort we were caught by surprise at a

deer eating at the side of the road. We proceeded to the gate and on to the property which encompasses seventy acres of natural land, beautiful guestrooms and suites, the world famous Mii Amo Spa, tennis courts, restaurants, heated pool, jacuzzi and putting green. The front desk staff was extremely friendly and the bellman was very prompt in showing us the property and leading us to our casita. Our casita was amazing! There was a sitting area with a couch, fireplace, television, bar area and small patio. The king size bed was lush and comfortable. And the bathroom had an oversized tub, dual sinks and extra large shower. As if the luxurious casita wasn’t enough, we were informed that the resort offered many on site activities, Camp Coyote for the kids and entrance to the beautiful Mii

Amo Spa. After relaxing a bit, we headed over to the Yavapai restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was elegant yet relaxed. The cool evening temperature allowed us to dine outside under the star strewn sky with the picturesque red rocks in full view. We were immediately greeted by Andrew Fotis, Director of Restaurants who filled us in on the area, restaurants and property. Shortly after, our waiter informed us of the nightly specials and then brought us some wine and a Prickly Pear Margarita. For starters, we both had the French Onion Soup which was wonderful. For dinner, my husband had the Buffalo Tenderloin and I chose the Scallops – both were delicious. For dessert, we had a Crème Brulee Sampler and Cheesecake with Lavender

Ice Cream. The food was awesome and the ambience was spectacular. The next morning we headed back into town to Pink Jeep Tours for our Broken Arrow adventure. The tour proved to be loads of fun as we were whisked off-road over the red rocks deep into the canyons of Sedona. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and pointed out the unique plants, animals and rock formations along the way. We stopped twice, once at Submarine Rock and then again at Chicken Point. And, before our trip ended, we found ourselves holding on tight as we descended down the “Road of No Return.” After the Pink Jeep Tour, we did some shopping in and around Sedona, grabbed a quick and inexpensive lunch at Taco Del Mar and then returned to Enchantment for a dip in the pool before dinner. As the evening drew near, and after careful consideration, we decided that Heartline Café would be just the place for dinner. Owned and operated by Charles and Phyllis Cline since 1991, Heartline Café is fine dining in a beautiful yet casual atmosphere. Dinner was Grilled Filet Mignon wrapped with House Cured Pancetta for my husband and the mouthwatering

Swordfish, which was the house special for me. For dessert, we had the Mascarpone Filled Poached Pear baked in Puff Pastry with Cinnamon Ice Cream and the Vanilla Bean Crème Brulee. Each dish tasted amazing and was uniquely prepared – like nothing we had ever encountered. Before leaving, we had to purchase a copy of “Recipes from Sedona’s Heartline Café” cookbook by Charles Cline which encompasses all that Heartline has to offer. This is the one restaurant you must experience while in Sedona. The next day, we spent the majority of the morning at Mii Amo Spa. After enjoying an early morning workout in the gym, we ordered breakfast poolside from Mii Amo Café. My husband opted for the Blueberry Griddle Cakes with Prickly Pear Syrup and I chose the Oatmeal alongside a freshly made Vegetable Juice. After

eating, we headed to the jacuzzi and steam room and then back outside to the pool. Mii Amo Spa offers an array of spa services including health and wellness consultations, massages, skin and body treatments, and specialty services. The spa features the Crystal Grotto for meditation, a heated indoor pool and many classes and lectures on topics such as Native American healing, aromatherapy and Feng Shui. In addition, the spa offers daily yoga, Pilates and fitness classes. After some exploring and hiking around Enchantment, we decided to head out to Slide Rock State Park which was originally the Pendley Homestead, a 43-acre historic apple farm located in Oak Creek Canyon. The park today is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. Visitors have a

blast sliding down a slick natural water chute and playing in the creek. There are also a few spots that are actually deep enough for visitors to jump off the nearby cliffs. The park was quite packed when we arrived early afternoon and it is recommended that you arrive very early or late in the day. On our last morning in Sedona, we shot over to the Coffee Pot Restaurant for breakfast. Arriving, we were faced with what seemed to be a hefty line of patrons waiting to enter. We were pleasantly surprised as the line moved quickly and the food was well worth the wait. The Coffee Pot is set against the famous coffee pot rock formation it was named for. They offer an amazing 101 different omelets, authentic Mexican food, breakfast all day and reasonable prices. The portions are hearty and the food was very satisfying. If visiting, be sure to try the Two Eggs with

Chicken Style Fried Steak. After breakfast, we were on our way back home feeling relaxed and refreshed. Sedona is amazing and highly recommended for those wanting to escape the Vegas city life and absorb the beautiful outdoors.
