In a frantic search, Elwood Blues found the long-lost brother of dearly departed Jake Blues, Brother Zee Blues, to reignite the Blues Brothers Show Revue 25 years ago. Jim Belushi and Dan Aykroyd have continued to carry out their lifelong “Mission From God” in the form of a live concert in conjunction with MJ Unpacked benefiting the Last Prisoner Project as well as lending the Blues Brothers brand name to a stunning line of beneficial cannabis products. In this exclusive interview, Aykroyd and Belushi discuss all facets of cannabis and society from the revolution and the war on drugs, the dangers of opioid addiction, the healing powers of music and cannabis and how Last Prisoner Project is helping to free prisoners and reunite families. JENNIFER WALKER: What an honor to speak with you both today! How wonderful that you two are teaming up to promote Last Prisoner Project and also bringing awareness to the launch of The Blues Brothers cannabis brand… DAN AYKROYD: The Blues Brothers

was very strong in movies, radio, television, records, films, documentaries; all kinds of triple-A projects in

entertainment. We cannot come to the cannabis market with this Blues Brothers license offering anything other than a superior experience for the consumer. Jimmy and I are taking all of our pooled experience from our branding over the years and from our time in show business to make this happen. We’re always thinking about the customer, the price and the quality of our products. JW: Especially with The Blues Brothers name attached to the products, there is an expectation for excellence! We are also so excited about the The Blues Brothers concert coming up here in October… JIM BELUSHI: It’s going to be at The House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and in conjunction with MJ Unpacked. Our friend Jerry Lopez is corralling a few big name surprise musicians as special guests to join the jam. JW: I think that will be outstanding! DA: Yes, a fantastic revue, we’re looking

very much forward to it.

JW: This is an interesting collaboration

with the two of you considering The Blues Brothers history that we’re all familiar with. Mr. Aykroyd, pulling you into the cannabis space...what has that been like?

DA: The cannabis space is no stranger to myself or to my Countrymen here in Canada. I grew up in Ottawa where they had an experimental farm growing cannabis to research medicinal

applications. I remember smoking some of this beautiful bud that a friend of mine stole out of the experimental farm and distributed it to friends in town. It was working man’s weed- I was driving a mail truck at the time and I got two or three runs done and was suddenly, very efficient from the effects. From driving a truck, the neck and back can suffer, and this cannabis just alleviated so many things and it brought a feeling of wellbeing. Whatever euphoria was there did not interfere with my functioning all the way through my government career, as I went on to work for the Canadian penitentiary service and the Department of Public Works. I was smoking recreationally throughout all of that, as were many people in Ottawa because it was readily available from grows and from importers (hashish from Lebanon, Nepal, Buton, Afghanistan)...big, black bricks with the Royal seal stamped on them and the big, red bricks of kief. For all of us, consuming was a way we got through a work week! And you know, Canada didn’t fall. The government functioned, so much so that today, you have a reasonable view of it where even police in some towns, if they don’t smoke for 12-24 hours, they can come back on duty. There’s a very tolerant view of cannabis here in Canada. I embrace this and hope that Americans will be able to benefit in the same way that Canadians have with this sensible legalization. JW: We are definitely benefiting from

legalization here in Nevada. Of course, Las Vegas (specifically) has that “come

to town and party” stigma associated with it related to tourism. For Nevada locals, we have embraced legalization for all of the benefits of plant medicine and many of the issues that you’ve mentioned. DA: I think that partying is fun. If you can moderate alcohol use and completely eliminate Fentanyl, opioids and pharmaceuticals, powders and pills which are killing so many people as they try to “party” or alleviate their suffering in life and substitute that for cannabis, the world would be a much more healed place! So go ahead and party, smoke one and have an edible! That’s the smartest way to party, even my daughters are advocates of moderate consumption (of the best products, of course)... JW: Of course- only the best of the best! Segueing into discussing

the Last Prisoner Project, so many have been imprisoned for these minor offenses when we now have the freedom to legally purchase and consume cannabis in many states. Some of these minor infractions are decades old and it’s heartbreakingly unjust!

DA: It’s third world viewing of cannabis and these terms of

punishment don’t apply here in North America (especially recently).

JB: The war on drugs has always been based on a race war. The

use of cannabis in the United States began when the Caribbean/

Jamaican sailors visited New Orleans for seaport trading and brought it with them. It quickly spread throughout the jazz music scene and the authorities soon began to target all minorities for its use. Even the word “marijuana” is a controversial term right now in the cannabis industry (and beyond) as the term was initiated and used to target Mexican immigrants post-Mexican Revolution, who brought their medicine with them across the Texas border as they fled turmoil in Mexico. The “war on drugs” has done so much damage to families, overcrowding jails for inoffensive and nonviolent crimes. The Last Prisoner Project is the next wave of cannabis legalization And we’re having some great success, by the way! DA: The New York Times said we have to rethink our use of drugs

and how we police it. Look at the movie about Billie Holiday and how Harry J. Anslinger went after her because he was a racist...

JB: A rabid racist! DA: ...the use of these substances which were palliatives in

the harder sense with pharmaceuticals, to persecute the Black musicians and artists of the time. Thank God we’re mostly past that. Cannabis is a healing story, I believe. It’s helping so many people. It helps you sleep, relieves anxiety, it can be a very beneficial thing for our minds and bodies.

JB: Getting back to these prisoners, there’s 40,000 incarcerated people and the Last Prisoner Project, with Steve DeAngelo and Mary Bailey at the lead, are getting all kinds of support. Not only financially with donations, but also with letters that are written to state’s attorneys in each state. Louisiana just turned over some laws to start letting people out. By the way, Louisiana is kind of where all of this started. So many families have been broken. The number one fear in life is death, the number two fear in life is the collapse of family. This war on drugs has collapsed the families of those incarcerated. DA: It’s absolute hysteria driven by extremists. JB: Politicians use the stats of arrests to help them campaign

when they’re running for office. So the first thing they used to do for a campaign is go out and bust medical dispensaries, bust people on the street just to say, “look what I am doing to bust crime!”-and it was just to prove a point, meanwhile, harming people and families. JW: What I love about The Blues Brothers tagline is that the “on a

mission from God” sentiment really does apply here in so many ways. Lending your brand name to help facilitate the freeing of these prisoners who have been incarcerated and bringing awareness to that is huge. Tying music in with all of this along with CBD, cannabis, getting away from opioid addiction- it’s such a great package and a positive message. All of it is a spiritual experience. We’re moving into a different consciousness in society and how we perceive cannabis.

JB: You nailed it, Jennifer. On a mission from God...it’s a spiritual

mission. This is a global community family mission.

DA: One of Christ’s favorite ministries was to prisoners. Among

the downtrodden he ministered to, prisoners were high up there. Those who had sinned were in prison, incarcerated and he would visit them and talk with them. Of course we’re on a mission from God and the Godhead needs us as much as we need it.

Come on!’" said Jim Belushi, who was bestowed his role in the Blues Brothers in honor of his late brother John Belushi. "’It's our combined efforts that will lead to the release of all non-violent cannabis prisoners.’" JB: It’s a two way street… DA: We have to work together. A higher consciousness about everything should occur now as it pertains to the way we treat each other, the way we talk about each other, how we love each other, eliminating hate speech...it’s a very big task to elevate the planet to a more spiritual level that we cannabis-supporters have. We have that spiritual level, we need to spread it around. JW: Especially during times like these and navigating through this

pandemic. We can use all of the brotherhood/sisterhood we can get!

DA: Yes, and however we can get it. We love to be a congregant society. I’m hoping that the concert comes off well and there’s not some ridiculous spike (Covid) that prevents us from doing it, God forbid. But we’re going to put on a show! The people who go to these shows, they never forget it for the rest of their lives. From the first show that Belushi (John) and I did at the Universal Amphitheater to the last show that Jimmy and I did at the Soaring Eagle Casino in Michigan... At that show, one of the tribal chiefs walked up to me, he was 7-feet-tall and looked like the size of a freezer! He was a beautiful man and he said with a tear in his eye, “That music just washed over me...it washed everything out of me. I needed that music to clean me out”. That’s what we do- we do a good ear and mind cleansing with our show.

JW: I can’t wait to experience it in person! Anything new and exciting going on with The Blues Brothers products? JB: We have the Working Man’s Brand as Danny’s story about

Ottawa, Canada, is all about the “working man”. We also have the 6-pack of 0.25 gram prerolls, our Baby Blues...a little burner for your break at 2 o’clock in the morning when you’re working at the plant and you need a little help to get you through the rest of the night. They’re also great for social distancing, since they’re compact enough for everyone to have their own joint and not have to share.

DA: There’s a big female purchasing demographic for these.

It’s like, one, two, three hits...you got what you need. You can go to the opera, go shopping, walk the dog, go stargazing, and it’s the perfect amount. It’s not like you’re hauling on a blunt. You get a great taste and a nice euphoric feeling- an effective way to microdose if you’re smoking.

JB: It’s a state by state thing, as you know. So far we’re in

Colorado, Oregon, Oklahoma, and we are in discussions with 10 other states. With regs and packaging things can take time but we will be in Nevada shortly, Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan... we’re expanding quite rapidly.

DA: We source the best in each state and we work with them to do

the licensing, packaging and marketing. We’re not going to go out there and source flower that’s anything less than what we love.

JB: I’m also a grower- I know my strains, I know my clones and I

know how to grow so when I go to these other states I really comb their cultivation and form a collaboration on how to grow the Blues Brothers strains the best way.

DA: We’re benefiting from Jimmy’s knowledge as a real farmer...

he’s not just slapping his name on it, he’s a real farmer!

JB: Also, Danny and I have partnered up with Bhang Chocolate to make a Blues Brothers premium chocolate edible. I believe edibles really are the start for the new cannabis-curious consumer to dabble. The chocolates are inspired by Jake and Elwood. age Media was founded in early 2020 by husband and wife team, George and Kim Jage. The company is poised to fill the critical gap where brands and retailers convene to drive the future of the industry, capture the next stage of market growth and deliver a true return on investment and objectives. I couldn’t wait to connect with them to find out more about who they are, and how this event came about. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Tell me about your background(s). KIM JAGE: I’ve been in sales and marketing for my entire career — specifically, I’ve been marketing new and novel events for nearly 20 years. I met George in 2004. I had just returned from traveling through China with suitcases of my new favorite beverage, Chinese specialty tea. I intended to open a specialty tea retail store in Princeton, NJ. I couldn’t wait to change careers and promote the plant so few Americans knew. So I joined the Specialty Tea Institute and flew down to Atlanta, Georgia, for a symposium they were having to learn about the industry. Strangely, my business partner told me, “You’re going to meet the man you’ll marry there.”

George recently launched “Take Me 2 Tea,” a specialty tea-only trade show in Vegas. We met in a break-out session and he asked me to join him at the networking reception that night. I agreed. But after the session, he was immediately surrounded by people that wanted to learn more about his show. I didn’t want to stand there waiting for his attention

Exasperated, I called my business partner and asked him to pull up a map and figure out how to get me back to my hotel ( the days before smartphones.) As I sat on a fire hydrant waiting for directions, my partner asked if I met THE man. I replied that I did, but probably wouldn’t see him again among the thousands that were there. While on the phone, I turned to my right and there was George walking up the street. We went to the party together that night and he told the president of the Tea Association that he was going to marry me. Six months later, I moved to Vegas. I joined his team selling exhibit space and sponsorships, moved into marketing, changed that silly name, became his business partner, helped grow the event to the largest tea show in the world, and then we got married. Our two kids were born in Vegas. After our successful exit, George became President of Marijuana Business Daily, and I focused on our children while consulting. GEORGE JAGE: My relationship with the plant goes back to my adolescence where that also inspired my entrepreneurism to start an “herbal distribution company.” But following college, my father was having some challenges at his apparel liquidation business, so I jumped in to help. Through a series of events, we realized the need for a trade show for this subsegment of the apparel market and launched The Off-Price Show. Realizing the growth and revenue opportunities of trade events and their impact on the business communities they serve, I was hooked. After we sold Off-Price to a company in London and realizing I did not fit the corporate model, I moved to Vegas to launch a number of different companies. One was importing patio furniture from China with DTC tent sales, and another was partnering with an Australian company to sell personal bottles of oxygen to hotels as an in-room amenity.

The wife of a long time friend asked me if there was a trade show for tea. I didn’t know much about tea, but saw an emerging category and community that was underserved that led to the launch of what would become World Tea Media and led my path to Kim as she publicly shared our moment of destiny above. After exiting World Tea Media as Kim mentioned, I took an opportunity to join a start-up digital publication in the cannabis industry that had one full-time employee and had hosted a conference with 20 tables tops at a race-track in Seattle. I truly saw this as an opportunity to bring several of my life’s passions together and help grow this nascent market. After rebranding the event and related media assets to what is now MJBizCon and MJBizDaily, scaling them to over 1,000 booth event at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and being recognized as the fastest growing trade show in the U.S. twice under my leadership, I ended up with an executive divorce with the owners. From there, I had an opportunity to continue to operate in the cannabis media landscape and step in as the CEO of Dope Magazine. The founders had created an amazing and iconic brand in the industry in a very short period of time. As that growth led to a need to recapitalize the business, I was able to successfully steer

the sale and acquisition of the company to High Times Holding Corp. SS: How did you come up with the idea for MJ Unpacked? What makes this show different from all the rest? KJ: I didn’t want to name it like all the others, “Cannabis event, conference, etc.…” The word ‘unpacked’ originally came from our partnership with BDSA. We originally intended to hold state summits that “unpacked” data and insights to make them actionable. And I wanted our messaging to be more than, “we’re the largest” or ”we’re the must attend event.” Instead, I wanted to create a ‘feel’ for the event. GJ: We spent a lot of time evaluating what truly creates success at a trade show: What do people love? What do they hate? How can we create a return on investment, a return on objectives, and a return on experience for each subsegment of our target market? Simply put, we talked to our audience and listened to what their need-sets are in the current market. We recognize that most key decisionmakers don’t like going to large panindustry events where people are kicking the tires or asking, “So, what do you do?” They want to be in the right room with the right people and have the space to sit down and have a conversation, not just get a badge scan or business card. We address that by carefully screening every attendee to meet our qualifications. We have created a massive lounge with soft-seating through the event. We have a bar, local musicians, and even a gong to bang when you get a deal done. We are not trying to pigeon-hole the delegates to conduct business in the confines of a 100 square feet, but to let the business happen as it should and does. We recognized the value proposition for a brand to spend $5-6k on a bare space booth and typically double that to build, design, shop, set up and store one, so we created a low-cost, easy-lift solution with our tech-enabled Brand Showcases. This allows brands to be on display without being tethered to a booth location at the event. The tech allows companies to engage with the brands, direct message reps at the event, and even schedule time on their calendars. But what we really love is that it creates

a retail-like discovery experience at MJ Unpacked. As Kim mentioned, with brands from across the entire U.S. on display, we can see for the first time where the market is heading, who is innovating, and what is coming next. We know people need access to capital so we created our Money Stage to allow companies to pitch from the stage to an exclusive audience of accredited investors. We elevated our conference program to move beyond “how to open a dispensary” and packed it with some of the best and brightest operators who have proven success stories to share with their peers. We even addressed the simple things like how people hate waiting in a line by offering to mail badges to attendees registered before our advance deadline on September 30th.

The Blues Brothers, to this day, is still one of my all-time favorite movies, and I am a big fan of blues music as a result of that film. And I have a secret objective that involves a sit down with Dan and a pot-infused conversation about extraterrestrial life. The concert is exclusively for registered attendees at MJ Unpacked and will be held Thursday night October 20th at the House of Blues. Brings Health Support to the Forefront for Animals r. Johanna Meijia-Fava has a PhD in marine mammal ophthalmology, and is a Doctor in Veterinary Medicine. She and her husband Joe, along with guidance from her mom, Dr. Norma Pestano co-founded Animal Necessity, a company at the forefront of the development and promotion of holistic, protocol-based approaches to animal wellness. I was extremely fortunate to secure some time with Dr. Jo and her husband to learn about the research they are doing using their newest product line, BlackFin HEMP for zoos, aquariums, and companion animals. STEPHANIE SHEHAN: Hey Dr. Jo and Joe… It is so nice to meet you, I am extremely interested in the work you guys are doing with marine mammals as well as other animals. Tell me Dr. Jo, how did you get into the medical field? JOHANNA MEJIA-FAVA, PhD, DVM (DR. JO): It was actually because of my mom, Dr. Norma Pestano. She is the matriarch of this company and my inspiration. With over forty years of experience in medicine, she created these same supplement formulations for humans. We then worked with her to create similar formulations for animals. She completed medical school in the Dominican Republic and when she moved to the United States, because of the language barrier, in lieu of taking the board, she dedicated ten years to research in the Amazon over in Peru. She was one of the first doctors to work with Cats Claw. She studied along with Cornell University the various properties of the plant that support the normal inflammatory response. And she, at the time, was lucky enough to meet a doctor named Eloy Rodriguez who coined the term “zoopharmacognosy.” Studying under this doctor, she was able to see how different natural plant remedies worked in animals and then make the necessary adjustments to create human versions of the same remedies.

SS: She sounds amazing. And how awesome that you guys get to continue what she started. Tell me, how did you guys meet?

JOE FAVA: Johanna and I met in New York when we were sixteen years old. I worked for a media company after college and Jo was helping with her family’s business. Around 2005, Jo landed her first job as a marine mammal veterinarian . The head doctor there was very holistic-minded. Ironically, one of Jo’s jobs was to drive to GNC once a week and purchase the supplements they needed for a whale. That got us to thinking that possibly Jo’s mom’s supplements could work for the whale. We spoke with the doctor about creating a protocol around Dr. Pestano’s supplements and he gave the approval. That whale is still on our supplements now eighteen years later. She was patient number one for us and she is actually the oldest living whale in human care. We just saw her a couple weeks ago and she looks amazing. SS: I am assuming your work with this whale is what started your company. JF: Yes. We started working with zoos and aquariums and at that time, there were no companies making specialty products for zoo and aquarium animals. Plenty of companies were making multivitamins for animals but no special formulations. Understanding holistically what is going on from the cells out is necessary when creating specialized protocols, especially for different mammals and other animals. Our supplements are tailored to various needs such as immune system support, digestive system support and calming . Those in the zoo and aquarium space understood what we were offering and they very much appreciated it. We grew to become the number one provider of specialty supplements for animals.

allergies so we were flown in to evaluate and help the dog. It is awesome to see zoos and aquariums all over the world start to move away from pharmaceutical drugs for animals. SS: It sounds like there is a lot of crossover between what works with humans and what works with animals. DR. JO: There is. Our line of supplements is based entirely on my mom’s line of human supplements. Obviously, dosing has changed. And, certain plant ingredients change based on certain toxicities to animals. But for most of our products, because they are working on a cellular basis, they are very complementary to both humans and animals. SS: That is so interesting. Recently, you guys have begun work using hemp as a supplement for these animals. I know that all mammals have an endocannabinoid system but what about other animal species? JF: Yes, and what’s interesting is that they have really only been studying the endocannabinoid system for about the last 38 years or so. Even jellyfish have an endocannabinoid system.

SS: Do you work with all types of animals?

DR. JO: That’s right. Just as we have an immune system or a respiratory system, we all have an endocannabinoid system.

JF: Yes, we work with marine mammals, avian, reptiles, fish and all kinds of other amazing species. My wife is a leader, not only degree wise but also ethically. She gets calls 24 hours a day from zoos around the world with questions about species I’ve never even heard of. Last week, we received a call about a painted dog who has

SS: The National Center for Biotechnology Information defines the endocannabinoid system as a “widespread neuromodulatory system that plays important roles in central nervous system (CNS) development, synaptic plasticity, and the response to endogenous and environmental insults.” According to NCBI, “The ECS is comprised

of cannabinoid receptors, endogenous cannabinoids (endocannabinoids), and the enzymes responsible for the synthesis and degradation of the endocannabinoids.” What does this mean for animals? DR JO: Our newest product, BlackFin HEMP was created as we studied how CBD isolate can target the endocannabinoid system in zoo and aquarium animals. While full spectrum hemp is ideal for humans, we have to be careful when introducing psychoactive THC to animals. The marine mammals we are working with have a very thick blubber layer. THC is a fat loving molecule and toxins can build up in fat - this is why we have started with an isolate product. For the past two years, we have studied BlackFin HEMP in a 44 year old Atlantic Bottlenose dolphin. She is the first marine mammal in the world on hemp. We test her CBD levels regularly and it is working for her ocular issues. She experienced a traumatic injury to her eye a while back, before we had BlackFin HEMP. Dolphins are very sensitive to the non-steroidal family of drugs for pain management. Our go to at that time was a narcotic called Tramadol. We have since started her on BlackFin HEMP and when she experienced a second injury to the same eye it resulted in a perforated cornea. Typically this would mean the animal would lose the eye. She however was able to form scar tissue in time to save her eye and she is still visual in that eye. SS: That is phenomenal. And, how exciting to be able to see the hemp in action. How do you administer the product to animals? DR. JO: What I have found is that for animals, the delivery system of the hemp CBD is very important. CBD, like THC, is a fat loving compound. So, it needs to be as water soluble as possible. When they are digesting a product, something water soluble ensures a high amount of bioavailability. Our product comes as a softgel with a patented Liquid Structure™ delivery technology. SS: That’s so interesting that you can use a softgel product. Up until now, I think I have only seen tinctures for pets. Is BlackFin HEMP still only in the test phases or is it mass produced and available for consumers? JF: BlackFin HEMP is available to purchase for companion animals. This first product is only intended for use in dogs. In the future,

you will see products geared towards other pets. BlackFin HEMP works for an array of conditions including anxiety, immune support and joint support. SS: So, animals only need the one product? We have seen other brands that market various hemp formulas for each condition. DR. JO: You really only need this one product. As you know, CBD supports the normal inflammatory response, it also calms and relaxes and provides immune support. We have such an amazing opportunity because we are not a typical CBD company. We actually have scientists and doctors available for the research we are doing. Currently we have dolphins, ducks, and pelicans on BlackFin HEMP. We also have the oldest Red Panda in the United States on it who is 21 years old. The panda wasn’t moving very well and after about five weeks on the hemp, he is now able to get around a bit better. SS: How difficult has it been to get other veterinarians on board with a CBD product for animals? JF: It’s really interesting. Even with all of the advancements and legalization of hemp, many veterinarians, like medical doctors, are still old school. They are educated in the use of pharmaceuticals and still a bit unsure about alternative medicines. We are starting the conversation and our ethics have opened the door for us to discuss hemp with veterinarians around the world. One of the ways that we have managed to get zoos and aquariums on board is to give them the product for no cost. Each time a consumer purchases BlackFin HEMP for their dog, we send a bottle to a zoo or aquarium. This allows us to do further research on the animals. SS: I love the BlackFin HEMP packaging which I understand was a collaboration between you and the artist, Romero Britto. Tell me about the collab and how it came about. JF: Romero Britto is an amazing artist and one of the most famous licensed artists in the world. We did a seven year deal with him to do our package and product label designs. He uses bright colors and a mix of patterns which gives such an upbeat and optimistic vibe that we thought it would

be perfect for our products. He is also an activist for many worldwide organizations and has donated his time and art to many charities. He has an “art for all” mindset and he loves having a product like ours with his art on it out there sending a positive message rather than creating an expensive piece of art that ends up in just a couple people's homes. DR JO: We were recently able to introduce Romero to Dingh, the dolphin I mentioned earlier with the eye injury. He had the opportunity to swim with her at Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder (DPMMR. org) and also paint with her! SS: I love that. MAX BEZMAN Budtender at VEGAS TREEHOUSE What attracted you to the cannabis industry?

I am originally from California so I have had cannabis around me for a long time. I started as a medical user in California and saw the benefits immediately. I love to help people and I just saw this as another opportunity to bring people something that has been stigmatized and show them just how much it could help them as well.

Looking 5 years down the road, what do you think the cannabis industry will look like and do you think cannabis will be federally legal?

Looking into the future I see cannabis around the world helping to treat and serve a variety of ailments. I'm sure as we continue to develop our knowledge of this miraculous herb that it will also help to break down social stigmas that may have once been created about cannabis, I'm sure federal legalization is not far away either...5 years sounds about right.

What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone trying to get their foot in the door of the cannabis industry? The best piece of advice I can give someone looking to get their foot in the door is don't stop learning, there is so much information in this field and it's constantly growing and getting more refined. There is no cap to the knowledge we can gain daily.

How did you get your start at Vegas Treehouse dispensary and what’s your favorite part about working there?

If there was one thing I would change about the cannabis industry is to try and create a uniform system that everyone can access to make information more available to consumers and retailers alike, such as terpenes and how important they are. I believe a greater overall terpene knowledge would increase the ability to treat several different symptoms and issues without leading to unwanted side effects.

What are two products you highly recommend and why?

Two products I would have to highly recommend would be The Hunibadger (electronic dabbing device) and Miss X Rosin. I am a really big Sativa fan because I love to be active and doing the most. The Rosin at first glance looks like the Mars brand candy "Creme Savers' ' it literally has terpene swirls, the brand GLP knew exactly what they were creating with this extract. With high amounts of Limonene it is super euphoric and has explosions of citrus flavors mixed with wonderful candy notes, and subtle lavender hints. A superb concentrate from a superb brand. The Hunibadger is a very sturdy and mobile dabbing device that gives you the peace of mind to be able to dab just about anywhere. It is also the most true analog to electronic conversion in my opinion. With interchangeable batteries there is never any down time as long as you always have a charged battery on hand.

Who do you think is the most influential figure in cannabis?

I would have to say the most influential figure in cannabis history is Dr. Raphael Mechoulam. He is an Israeli scientist famous for isolating and identifying the THC molecule, and laying the foundation for the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System.

I got my start at Vegas Treehouse by chance, one of my buddies told me to apply and I did and landed the job shortly afterwards. My favorite thing about working here is how close we all are, it's like family away from family, it really gives the treehouse that homie feel and comfortable vibe.

What’s your perfect terpene combination when it comes to flower and/ or dabs?

What is the most rewarding thing you have accomplished as a budtender?

If there was one thing you can change about the cannabis industry what would it be and why?

My favorite terpene mix is gonna have to be Terpinolene, Ocimene, and Myrcene. This wonderful mix has a burst of candy sweetness and a nice easy going chill high to bring it all together. I have been smoking on flower from a newer company called 22Red. It was created by the bassist of System Of A Down and this line is reasonably priced without having to sacrifice quality. GRACE MANSON Budtender at THE SOURCE RENO What attracted you to the cannabis industry?

I really wanted to expand my knowledge of cannabis and how the industry operates. I started in Cultivation to help expand my knowhow on how this incredible plant grows and matures into the medicine I depend on everyday.

Looking 5 years down the road, what do you think the cannabis industry will look like and do you think cannabis will be federally legal?

Within the next five years I'm hoping to see more women working in cannabis! I feel as though there is a HUGE missed market for women in the cannabis industry and I'd love to see more female owned and operated cultivation facilities and products targeted for women in this growing market! I think we will go federally legal in the near future with states all over the US going GREEN, I see it being federally legalized within the next three years (fingers crossed).

What is the best piece of advice you can give to someone trying to get their foot in the door of the cannabis industry?

If there was one thing you can change about the cannabis industry what would it be and why?

I would love to see more education being used to help cannabis industry members be more informed about the rules and regulations in their state. Being in Nevada in the cannabis industry brings its own set of challenges and special regulations due to the alcohol and gaming industries here which has made our industry employees have to take the extensive precautions to ensure we are staying compliant with our state compliance board and I would love to see more of that being used in other GREEN states.

What are two products you highly recommend and why?

I'm a huge advocate of WYLD gummies and have been obsessed with the 1:1 Pear CBG gummies from them. I love the effects and have such inspiring thoughts with CBG! Also I am a flower girl to my core and love the ritual of rolling flowers. It helps immensely with my anxiety and helps keep my busy mind quiet while still keeping me stimulated.

Who do you think is the most influential figure in cannabis?

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! Educate yourself on terpenes, strain heritage, how all these different cultivators are growing and producing their products. Never stop asking questions!

Willie Nelson is for sure the most influential person to me in cannabis. He has been an advocate for legal cannabis for many years and he is the co-chair of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). Along with being an amazing musician, his fight for cannabis regulations is so inspiring!

How did you get your start at THE SOURCE dispensary and what’s your favorite part about working there?

What’s your perfect terpene combination when it comes to flower and/ or dabs?

I am currently working at The Source in Reno, Nevada and was attracted to apply based on their sales model. At The Source it's a much more personalized experience where you are given a one on one consultation with a Patient Advisor who ushers you around the store to ensure you are receiving the perfect products for you! I love how customers respond to our sales model and I enjoy getting to know each customer during our consults and having the time to customize each customer's experience.

Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community

Sitting Down with Director ASIA DUNCAN

s I’ve mentioned in my previous articles on the subject, social equity wasn’t included whatsoever in any fashion when Question 2 initially passed by a nine percent margin way back in comparatively calmer days of 2016, at a time when multi-state infernocausing gender reveals and dangerous social media challenges were still in their infancy. While there are plenty of present provisions dedicated towards how much the licenses and extensive regulations will cost the operators and how consumers will be taxed, not one incorporates any element of social equity or even an attempt to legislatively repent for the catastrophic effects of the hilariously disastrous War on Drugs. For a state with as diverse a cannabis community and industry among nonlicense holders as it contains, it’s still surprising to realize no social equity measures were implemented in any way in Nevada’s recreational cannabis’ lifespan that will soon be five years old. Besides opening cannabis consumption lounges to a city that receives millions of tourists a year, Assemblyman Yeager’s Assembly Bill 341 will serve as The Silver State’s first attempt at including social equity measures into the Nevada cannabis industry.

As they missed the mark in 2016, it’s refreshing to see a state admit their shortcomings and incorporate what elements they missed into a later bill. And to many players in the cannabis industry and community’s credit, social equity is a matter that they themselves collectively made sure to promote.

One cannabis-related non-profit in particular here in Las Vegas has turned the values of social equity and diversity within the cannabis industry at large into the cornerstones of their organization; equity, inclusion and community. The mission statement of the Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community reads that it is to “focus on civic engagement and policies that will make opportunities real and attainable for communities and people that were disenfranchised by the failed drug war.” Beyond just social equity in the consumption lounge, the group also advocates for increased diversity and economic opportunities in all parts of the national cannabis industry as well as social reforms for those most affected by the Drug War’s horrific policies. Cannabis reform advocacy and activism comes so naturally to CEIC Director Asia Duncan that she didn’t initially think about how she had been an advocate for as long as she has. “I didn’t realize until meeting CEIC A’Esha Goins that I’ve always been an advocate.” Duncan recalled. “I started an organization in high school called “Students in Action for Equal Education. I was always in groups and organizations and programs where I was always a leader. But I didn’t know I was an advocate or leader at the time. I just thought I was doing what was right.” The over-encompassing topic of social equity stems partially from the lack of inclusion in canna-business owners on a national scale. Despite Black Americans being four times as likely to be persecuted due to cannabis, Black business owners only make up four percent of the national cannabis industry and not even six percent for Hispanic-owned businesses. Lack of diversity is a very prevalent problem in

the industry and CEIC hopes to expand the number of minority-owned cannabusinesses and minority employees on the national scale. Being Cultivation Manager of Harvest Foundation, one of the only Black-owned cultivations in Nevada, Duncan has seen this lacking inclusion and hurdles that smaller minority-owned cultivations must face in this flourishing industry. “These are all conversations that we were having at the office out of frustration.” Duncan said. “The frustration that we couldn’t help our people find jobs, frustration because there was no avenue to ownership, frustration because people would come to us with new innovative ideas but there wasn’t a hub or incubator or anything to push products out because everything had to go through a licensed facility. These were all changes and we were wondering how to fix it. So CEIC came about as that solution. It wasn’t just about consumption lounges getting passed so that wasn’t the thought process. The idea around Cannabis Equity and Inclusion Community is that we’re fighting for our

SOCIAL EQUITY core values which are freedom, equity and opportunity in the cannabis industry.” Nevada’s apprehension towards originally introducing social equity measures for cannabis isn’t surprising given this state’s history on cannabis prohibition, when for a period of time any possession whatsoever even down to a seed was instantly a felony charge. It’s almost immeasurable how many people were victims of these policies and Nevada remained the only state with this harsh of a first-time cannabis possession policy before being amended with 2001’s Assembly Bill 453. “That’s why CEIC is important. Because we’re a policy driven and civic engagement organization and you can’t create policy for us without us being in the room.” Duncan said. “We have to be in the room in order for policy to be created with us. And that’s how social equity is created. You create it by creating policy with the people that are closest to the problem. We have an industry that has its standards of operations and regulations set and we have our base and our foundation set here in Nevada. So cannabis is no longer emerging in Nevada. It’s here so we’ve already created that foundation, but that foundation was created without social equity. Now other states are able to see the issue and the fight for this opportunity and they’re creating new policies with that. There’s now a national conversation behind social equity in cannabis.” As mentioned in my previous interview with Assemblyman Yeager, ten out of the twenty consumption lounge licenses will be for social equity applicants. While Duncan admits this is at least a step in the right direction, it’s not the finalizing cure in healing the fractures caused in disenfranchised communities by cannabis’ prohibition. “I don’t feel like AB 341 is the end-all, be-all to address social equity in the Nevada cannabis industry because we still haven’t addressed equity as a whole.” Duncan mentioned. “There are only twenty licenses that are available and only ten will be for social equity. It’s going to be a fight because there’s a lot of folks that want to get into the industry.”

Although AB 341 received much of the cannabis bill spotlight, it’s not the only cannabis vendor-related bill to be filed. AB 322 would have “provided licensure and regulation of certain events at which the sale and consumption of cannabis or cannabis products is allowed.” By definition, this bill would have possibly allowed cannabis sales to be done at music festivals and other public events. For communities so powered on small businesses and privately owned vendors, Duncan viewed this bill as especially important. “We felt like what bill could most impact the community? Where do small and microbusinesses live? We have mobile restaurants and bars and a lot of other things in our community events that require temporary permits. We already understand that space and live in that space. Micro Businesses and small businesses live in our community. We wanted to create a bill that would impact our community.” Sadly, the bill became one of many legislative casualties in a year dominated by coronavirus-related matters. Further, Duncan has decidedly mixed feelings on while this bill is only a drop in the bucket for more diversity in cannabis business ownership and operations, it’s a move in the right direction for cannabis reform no matter how miniscule. Unless there's a new measure to make cannabis even more illegal, then any cannabis reform is good reform. “AB 341 isn’t full social equity because it only helps a few. Even if there’s three names on every license, there’s only ten licenses, so thirty people in total. How is the percentage supposed to go up from us only owning one percent of the industry? I don’t really feel like it’s a bill that impacted the community much but CEIC supports the bill because any move forward is a move forward in the right direction. For us, we think it’s the bill the lawmakers need to do a little R and D and get their feet wet. AB 341 is a start to social equity, but I definitely don’t think it’s the whole answer. I definitely don’t think it’s the solution

at all. We feel like yes, it’s the start of a conversation that we want to be supportive of any movement in the right direction for social equity but the consumption lounge bill is not the solution. It’s just a start and it always has to start somewhere.” There’s further reform needed for minority-owned canna-businesses even when AB 341 is fully operational. Vertical integration, or all parts needed for seed to sale of cannabis being owned by one company, is incredibly difficult for small minority-owned operators. Getting shelf space in dispensaries and needing extravagant marketing budgets are other hurdles for minority-owned canna-businesses. “In order for us to be out there, we had to create a space for us. And with CEIC, we’re able to create a platform in a safe space to address why our community wasn’t included and there’s no equity in our state. We created that conversation and took these conversations and viewpoints to our lawmakers.” Through it all, the lack of social equity inclusion in Question 2 and the new inclusion in AB 341, CEIC may have an advantage in making sure diversity is front and center in the discussion. The Cannabis Compliance Board-created Social Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee which will be determining precisely how social equity will be implemented in the consumption lounge process, is chaired by CEIC Founder A’Esha Goins herself. Having the founder of the organization dedicated to equity and inclusion in cannabis at the helm of the committee incorporating those values into the next chapter of Las Vegas cannabis history will almost undoubtedly help CEIC in turning their viewpoints into a desperately needed reality in first the Nevada then the national cannabis industry on a large-scale level. “With Coach (Goins) in the room, we feel like we’re in the room. We know she’s reading the conversations of the public meetings back to us and wondering how we feel.”

Phil Luck (@phillucktattoo) started tattooing in New York City in March of 1993, four years before New York City legalized tattooing. Over the last 28 years, Phil has tattooed coast to coast and made a name for himself as a world class traditional tattooer and flash painter, as well as being one of the leading tattoo historians, winning numerous awards at tattoo conventions and having his work grace the front covers of 8 international tattoo magazines. His work has also been featured in Michael McCabe’s book “Tattooing New York City.” Phil is a well-rounded tattooer working in numerous styles including Traditional, Japanese, Tribal, Watercolor and Brushstroke.

Josh Riley (@joshril3y) decided early on that he wanted to spend his adult life tattooing. In 2010, he began tattooing under the guidance of Don Wescott and Danny Garcia in Albany, NY. From there, Josh travelled back and forth from New York to Florida, working under Chris O’Brien and Big Bruce Hughes. Josh eventually, settled in New York. Making Magic with Cannabis and Music

Song writer, producer, and performer, King Nebulis, brings his own flavor to the table. With a spectacular blend of hiphop, rap, and as Neb would say, "Just good vibes," he has Incorporated a love for growing and smoking cannabis into his music resulting in an infusion of educational and chill melodies. We caught up with him to hear some of his music and find out what he has going on up in Northern Nevada. How did you get into music? Music has been a part of my life since birth. My uncles and father were in music and had jam sessions I would go to. Got my first drum set at age 7. Heard my first rap record (“Rapper's Delight”) and it became my passion. What type of music do you produce? Eclectic vibes. I have not produced any Country yet. Mostly Hip Hop, but have dabbled in Alternative Rock and more. Are you from Nevada? No, I am from Harlem, NYC. I came to Nevada to restart my life. There was a ton of work, and I wanted a fresh start and I loved to grow cannabis. Are you in the cannabis industry? To some degree I am. I am the founder of a grow community, “Let My People Grow”. This is what LMPG in my music stands for. I also have a YouTube channel that gives people info on growing cannabis (nebulisgrowscannabis). This industry is something that I believe in, on every level. You could say that I am an activist.

Do you incorporate cannabis into your music? Hell yeah! All the time. Not just the smoking of cannabis, or about being high. I also bring my grow into my music. I have a song about how to pick a seed, as well as why I love to grow. Music is my expression and my voice in my movement.

What is your favorite strain so far? Cookies strains, not the company but the strain. I love the terpenes that tend to blend together in cookies. I am mainly an indica smoker, but indica dominant hybrids are good as well. Anything with myrcene or caryophyllene are my go-to’s most of the time.

Advice to youngsters wanting to enter the music industry? Follow your dreams, be yourself, finish school, you can do anything your heart desires if you believe in yourself. It takes a lot of dedication and a lot of work, but you can do it.

Does cannabis help you artistically? Absolutely! When I am at work doing my music is when I lean to the sativa dominant hybrids. This helps me focus and keep a creative mind set while I work. What has been your favorite song so far? “By My Side” is my favorite song I have written to date. It will be on my upcoming album. This song is a feel good song. It’s a song that Kings can relate to. It talks about the things that I will always have by my side: Miss Mary Jane and my Queen. The ladies that I love most. What do you have coming up in the future? As most everyone knows by now, my favorite thing is roaming around the backcountry, looking for weird stuff. Ghost towns, abandoned mines, hot springs, strange art…basically, anything man-made in the middle of nowhere. And while I do love poking around places like Goldfield’s Car Forest, my favorite weird thing can only be found in a real forest! Now you might be thinking, “But Nevada is a desert — there are no forests!” Wrong! Nevada is part of the Basin and Range province, meaning, the landscape out here is made up of a series of vast sagebrush basins separated by long, skinny mountain ranges. In fact, Nevada has more mountain ranges than any other state! And in those mountains, you’ll find plenty of trees. Up to about 6,000 feet in elevation, it’s mostly scrubby pinyonjuniper pines. But if you go a little higher, you’ll find plenty of lush, green aspen groves, too. Aspen are those beautiful trees with round leaves that turn yellow in the fall (most people have seen them up at Mt. Charleston, Lake Tahoe and in Great Basin National Park). Well, aside from their beautiful yellow fall foliage, aspen are also noted for their stark white bark. If you’ve ever been hiking in Nevada and seen someone’s initials carved in a tree, it was probably an aspen — carvings show up best in that bright white bark. For years I’d been hearing about a particular kind of aspen tree carving that I was dying to see for myself: dirty Basque dendroglyphs!

Dendroglyph (or arborglyph) is basically just a fancy word for “tree carving”. Just like a petroglyph is something carved into a rock, an

arborglyph is something carved into a tree. And here in the Great Basin, plenty of these were made by lonely Basque shepherds. The Basque people are an ethnic group from the border region of Spain and France, with no officially recognized homeland of their own, many of whom emigrated to the United States in the 1800’s to work as shepherds out west. They herded giant flocks of sheep up to mountain pastures, where they’d camp out all summer long amidst the lush meadows and aspen groves, alone with just their sheep and dogs for company. These days, employment opportunities have improved enough back home that Basque men aren’t really immigrating to work as shepherds anymore, but until as recently as the 1970’s, pretty much all the shepherds out west were young Basque guys. And when young guys are stuck way up in the mountains all summer, all alone…well, they get lonely. And they start missing female company, in particular. So legend has it that scattered throughout aspen groves all over the Great Basin, one can find pornographic tree carvings made by lonely, horny Basque shepherds! I saw photos of these dirty tree carvings in a book once and knew I had to go find some for myself. Problem is (as weird as it sounds) I think they’re considered historical artifacts, so all the books and websites are very sketchy with details, and don’t give exact locations. I guess they’re afraid people will vandalize them — and rightly so! I heard they chopped down one of these porno aspen groves at a ski resort near Tahoe just to appease the resort owner’s prudish wife (I couldn’t verify this, but it sounds about right). So I guess it makes sense that these locations are kept a closely guarded secret — but I really wanted to find some!

What to do? There are hundreds of aspen groves all over the Great Basin — looking through them all would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack! It would all have to boil down to dumb luck and fortunately, that’s just what happened. I was camping at a hot spring in the eastern Sierra, just across the state line near Bridgeport, California one September, when another camper mentioned that a shepherd had come through the previous week, herding thousands of sheep back down from their summer pasture. My ears perked up immediately, and I scanned the mountains surrounding us: there! At the very top of a ridge, I spotted the distinctive bright green of an aspen grove! Though I figured it would likely turn out to be a wild goose chase, I needed some exercise anyway — you can’t just sit around a hot spring drinking beer all day! So I convinced a friend of mine to come along, and we bushwhacked up the side of the mountain, where we followed the ridgeline towards the aspen. Sure enough, eventually we reached a high, grassy meadow surrounded by thousands of aspen trees, and started poking around. And wouldn’t you know it — one of the very first trees we looked at had a big ol’ pornographic carving on it! You would have thought I’d just found the lost treasure of the Sierra Madre, I was that stoked to have finally found one of these mysterious dirty Basque tree carvings! And it was a humdinger, too — a naked woman, spread-eagled. Only they didn’t bother to carve her hands and feet, just the good stuff: face, hair, torso, arms, legs, boobs, bush. HA! After laughing my ass off for a good 15 minutes (I know, I’m immature) and taking tons of funny photos and videos, we looked around the area for more dirty carvings. We found plenty of trees carved with names and dates — some going back to the 1920s! —but no more porno, alas. It seemed we’d found the one needle in the entire local haystack on our first try. Score! Now we could head back down to the hot spring and sit around drinking — now that we had a story to tell! When I got home, I made a video about the whole adventure for my YouTube channel so that everyone could share in my exciting discovery!

I know this column is supposed to be about interesting stuff I’ve seen while traveling around the state of Nevada…and technically, the dirty Basque tree carving I found was in California. But it was just across the border and besides, there are said to be many, many more dirty tree carvings in Nevada, too. I’m sure there are some up in the Ruby Mountains somewhere, and in Great Basin National Park. Anywhere Basque shepherds were known to take their sheep for the summer, you’ll find them. You just have to get out there and look!

y room was dark and cool and the pharmaceutical smell of the hospital secreted from my pores. I could hear the snow melt dripping loudly outside my window as I hummed along to Tina Turner’s “I Can’t Stand the Rain Against my Windows” while enduring the pain. This was surgery fifteen, and I laid around bed ridden enduring this medical nightmare. I heard the little feet pitter pattering fast down the stairs. He heard me singing and he was happy I was finally awake. I was sitting up, with ice packs covering my stomach, and my house jacket opened to the bandages. His precious little voice split the darkness with elation and light, “Mommy, mommy, turn on the TV, Dr. Sanja Gupta is on and he knows what’s going to help you.” I sat up. excited to see his happiness and obvious conviction. “Mommy, you know who Dr. Sanja Gupta is, well he’s on CNN.” Raising my eyebrows to my then 4th grader, I didn’t know what my little intellect was going to say. I had just left surgery the night prior and was now seeing his little eyes yet again trying to make me happy. He had endured so much, and I owed him my understanding. I leaned forward as much as possible and asked, “what’s that Timmy?” He asked me if I knew what weed was. I looked at him sideways, answered yes and then asked him if he knew what weed was. Jumping around elated he said, “Yes I do, and I know it

can help you.” He urged me to turn on the TV, and watch the series he had recorded and he let me know that Dr. Sanja Gupta was his favorite doctor on kids CNN. He told me the story of a little girl that was sick but got better after using weed. I didn’t know whether to burst into tears in fear that my child was upstairs watching TV late at night trying to find a cure for his mom or be excited that he may have found something that could help. At that time, we lived in a state that prohibited cannabis. I looked at him, sighed, and let him know we would look into it. I was medically retired from the Air Force and married to a Senior NonCommissioned Officer at the time and utilizing cannabis just wasn’t going to happen in my ethically programmed mind. I was teaching children to not become addicted to drugs and this was very much classified as a drug. Meanwhile, God’s universal plant was banned in my mind, and I didn’t give it too much thought. Tim, my husband continued to deploy back-to-back while Timmy and I continued searching for other herbal answers. We found Doterra through his teacher I would substitute for. I learned the science behind essential oils and chemical compositions and

from there I taught Timmy and we dug deeper into our indigenous roots. As a child, I was raised off the land. I took on the heart of my ancestors and began growing more healing herbs and plants. I began alchemy through herbalism, formulating and creating serums, blends, and concentrated ingestible herbs for the surgeries. I needed daily maintenance through multiple methods of use. Not only was I managing a multitude of medical diagnoses, I was also suffering mentally. I did not know how to manage the distress I was going through due to the severity of my military sexual trauma, kidnapping and rape. I did not always have the luxury of being my most present mother or wife. I educated Timmy with child psychology and mental health children’s books to explain the conditions that I had as a part of my living experience. Much like I watched the war of Vietnam coming out of my father’s mind and actions, my son saw the bloody

war and pain of mind-body connection pouring from his mother. Shortly after my husband returned home after several deployments, we had to relocate to Nevada where he took over as one of the Chief Master Sergeants at Nellis Air Force Base here in Nevada. Due to his military standing, me using cannabis was still nonexistent as a healing reality even living in a legal state. We didn’t want my healing to interfere with his career in the military even though he was nowhere around it. I couldn’t even talk about it due to the fear of backlash and scrutiny he might experience. Shortly after relocating to Vegas, Timmy saw a cannabis billboard. It was Dr. Reefer’s sign and he yelled “Look mommy, you should call them.” I had to go, I was due for another surgery and still on the 40mg of Oxycodone, psych meds, biologicals, chemotherapy, hormone medication, neurological medication and gastrointestinal medications for my multisystem autoimmune disease. I scheduled my appointment and obtained

my medical card from Wildflower Medical Consultants where I sat down for two hours while they explained everything that a woman like me needed to hear. I had pages of information, websites, book titles, handouts, and legal information to read and study. I owed that to myself and my family. My first dispensary visit was to Nevada Wellness Center where I received cannabis care from one of their

budtenders. I started with whole plant CBD products. I knew I could get off my 40 pills a day that I was chemically dependent on and stop additional surgeries, which had accumulated to 30 plus surgeries and procedures by that time. I went home with my products and sat outside in fear of what the Tims might be thinking in their own secret stigmas, but they supported my healing. They looked outside as I took my first dose. I didn’t want them to not be a part of this healing and lifestyle; they needed to understand this just as much as they understood my pharmaceuticals. I coughed hard with each pull and the Tims faces grew concerned. However, Timmy was excited and would throw up his thumbs after each cough to make sure I was okay. I threw the thumbs up back to let him know I was fine and started my evening mediation after the dose. I finished and walked into the house a different woman. My pain was practically gone, I had clarity and focus. They were completely in shock waiting for something to go wrong. Watching and listening to my body, I did a full body scan, recorded all symptoms, dosages, strain/ chemovar profile, method of use, meditation, and intention. I showed them my range of motion on previously locked, swollen elbows, knees, wrist, back and that 3-day migraine was gone. No one medication could treat the Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Multiple Sclerosis, IBD, fibromyalgia, endometriosis and others. I know what the science said but how and why was I suffering this long with the state-of-the-art doctors?

I cried in disbelief, I was walking upright, my stomach stopped cramping, my mind stopped circling, I was smiling. What just happened, why, how could this work for everything I faced? I was living herbally free. After a couple months I had a flare and the CBD wasn’t enough, I needed to learn cannabinoids fully. I left for Jamaica which I had read about in my spiritual herbal metaphysics studies of indigenous healing plants in search of the land races that were there in the mountains. Land races hold the power of indigenous practices for the betterment of the land and healing of the people. While there, I had another flare on the beach. My now spiritual father said “Daughter, you’re in the right country, let’s go get you some medicine and stop the pain.” I never felt pain the same way again. After returning to Vegas, I went back to Nevada Wellness Center, and bought an ounce of every cannabinoid and terpenoid I could find that worked well with my immune system and conditions. I retrieved my blood work and started getting an analysis of all my medicines. There were going to be counteractions. I started weaning myself off the 40 plus pharmaceuticals. I learned my dosage, my method of use and exchanged my big pharma pills for CBD, THC, CBG and CBN. Later, I reformulated every product that worked for me and founded my company Herbally Free. A company with the mission of cannabis being a medical plant that can help patients and veterans just like me with the best absorption and efficacy to manage and maintain my dose. Staying connected with Vincenzo Thomas Amato aka VTA has been something special for me. It's been a learning experience watching him thrive in the Nevada cannabis space for the past three years. Prior to entering the Nevada industry, in 2006 Vincenzo founded and opened Perennial Holistic Wellness Center in California. He was the GM until 2015 when it was sold. He is a rad dude and defines the "jack of all trades" as a unique plus successful local entrepreneur in Northern Nevada. Vincenzo’s creativity shows in many different ways by including his CBD brand while playing the acoustic guitar, beating on the Djembe drums and singing at local venues sponsoring cannabis events with his band. As a community leader, Vincenzo plays a huge role by entertaining everyone in his path with love. Recently I had the chance to sit down with Vincenzo and find out about his music, what he has coming up and how cannabis comes into play. JUSTIN BECKELMAN: Vinny, I love the name, "The Tahoe Tribe". That's what I feel like when I'm attending a show in Tahoe- that I'm a part of a tribe. When and where was your tribe formed? VINCENZO AMATO: My love and friendship with my bandmates in the Tahoe Tribe started back in 1998 when I met the band Lavish Green from So. Lake Tahoe… we always played shows over the past 20 years together and when I moved back home to Reno/Tahoe in 2016 to help open Mynt Dispensary I asked the guys in Lavish Green if they would back me and my tunes… and that is how The Tahoe Tribe formed.

JB: Who are the members of The Tahoe Tribe? Sticky Fingers has been my favorite new band for the past two years. I love them and unfortunately you can only see them play in Australia! JB: What live events are you attending/ sponsoring and has the Covid protocols played a factor? VA: I co-produce the Mammoth Reggae Festival and next summer will be launching my own festival called the Mammoth Feel Good Festival the 1st weekend of June… Covid19 protocols have played a major part in producing safe music festivals people can enjoy this past summer and my team always follows state regulated protocols so people can continue to enjoy live music. I have also performed and sponsored a few other festivals this past summer with my company One Love CBD- The Mountain Vibe Music Festival, CannaMucca Festival with the Paiute Tribe, The Truckee Reggae Festival, One Love CBD’s “ Saturdaze" at Jade Dispensary in Reno with yoga from OG of Slightly Stoopid, and The Live at Lakeview concert series that was unfortunately canceled for a second year due to Covid19. JB: You've been touring a lot of Northern Nevada, where would you like to tour next with the Tahoe Tribe? VA: Selfishly, I would love to just tour as many ski resorts as possible with my band so we can all snowboard in the day, and play music in the late afternoon or night for the people on the

mountain… "best of both worlds" since we all love to Shred the GNAR… haaaa! JB: How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process? Is cannabis involved? VA: Personally speaking for me, cannabis is always involved. Song writing to me is a very random process… sometimes I come up with a lyric, a melody, or just an idea I want to write a song about. Normally I will work on something before I bring it to the band, but then sometimes we just come up with some cool ass grooves when we warm up for band practice and a new song is born that way too. JB: What ambitions do you have for the band/ your career in music? VA: It would be nice to be at a level where I had a team of managers and bookers behind me and the band so we can focus on writing new music and collaborating with the epic musicians we all know and call family. I hope in 5 years from now I’m still promoting my CBD company One Love CBD with CBD awareness and education, producing and playing music festivals with my various band mates, and maybe just maybe, have that dream house/ recording studio on the lake in Tahoe for all my friends to come record at and experience The Tahoe Tribe vibe! As many would agree, the pharmaceutical industry, although helpful in some aspects, has ultimately failed those in need of mental health treatment. Lately, we have seen a multitude of evidence showing that those faced with mental health issues would rather receive treatment stemming from alternative and natural therapies and will prioritize effectiveness over all else. Utilizing natural medicine such as cannabis and psilocybin has become increasingly popular as has Ketamine and MDMA therapy. Matt Stang comes from the world of cannabis. He has been in the industry almost twenty years and many of those years were spent leading the team at High Times, the venerable cannabis media platform. He was instrumental in bringing the High Times Cannabis Cups to America and also led High Times to the sale of their company. Three years ago, Matt and his wife Jackee founded Delic, the first psychedelic wellness company. They are actively working to bring various psychedelic and alternative therapies to the mainstream and reframing the conversation around the compounds. Stang believes that psychedelics are the most transformative opportunity we have for mental health. The decision to create Delic was partly due to Stang’s wife who suffers from an anxiety disorder. For her, they have found incredible success utilizing Ketamine therapy. This drives their passion to bring Ketamine

therapy clinics to locations throughout the United States and providing the greatest access possible. If asked eighteen months ago, Stang would have said that the total addressable market for mental health therapies was 10-20% of the total population. But now, given all we have been through with Covid and the pandemic, he is more focused on offering treatment to 100% of the population. The current environment and state of the nation has caused quite an array of people, both young and old to experience anxiety and depression. Outside of clinical trials, the only psychedelic therapy that is legal and FDA approved for adults is Ketamine. Both MDMA and Psilocybin are both in phase 3 clinical trials but are not yet approved for use. Many are not aware of this, but The Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins has been conducting studies for many years for the use of psychedelics as treatment for everything from smoking cessation and addiction disorders to Alzheimers, PTSD and depression. Initial results are very encouraging. Legalization of psychedelics will take time. In the interim, Stang’s company Delic seeks to bring information and education to the masses. Cannabis has been used as a therapeutic treatment for disorders such as depression, amongst many other mental health disorders. Some studies show it’s efficacy in providing therapeutic relief for the symptoms of mental health illnesses. Mental health disorders are affecting nearly 1 in 5 Americans. Often leading to ailments such as anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, diabetes, dementia, cardiovascular disease, chronic pain and in worse cases, cancer. Which raises concern if we are abusing the plant. The vast majority of people who use cannabis short-term, experience it as a helpful antidepressant. Although the long-term side effects may vary with certain properties of the plant, more research has to be done to provide its efficacy. Last month was “suicide awareness month,” and I figured that it should not just be every September, but that it should be every month.

Let’s discuss cannabis and mental health.There was a study held at the University of New Mexico in 2020, which reviewed 5,876 patients and 1,819 anonymous participants. The results showed that cannabis as treatment of depression improved symptoms by nearly 4 points, on a scale from 0-10. Generally, pharmaceuticals used for treatment symptoms of depression generally take weeks, sometimes months to fully provide relief. The side effects of these pharmaceuticals used include anxiety, demotivation, suicidal ideation, agitation, and anorgasmia. They also discovered in this study that cannabis flowers with high levels of THC reduced the intensity of depression. The onset time (the time it takes to feel “high”) and side effects could arise from other antidepressant and synergistic compounds in the plant, beyond the already recognized THC and CBD. The conclusion of this study reported that most of the patients using natural cannabis flower products for treatment reported antidepressant effects. The magnitude of the effects and experienced side effects varied from the properties of each plant. Although, up to 1 in 5 of the participants who used high THC cannabis flower, experienced lack of motivation. The results of this study reported that the participants studied were 3 times as likely to experience positive effects such as optimism, peace, relaxation, and happiness. On the flip side, however, there are some mental health conditions that should not utilize cannabis for psychosis symptoms such as schizophrenia, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder. Although, cannabis has been shown to be beneficial for the treatment of PTSD. Statistics say 3.5% of Americans suffer from PTSD, it

is estimated that 1 in 11 people will be diagnosed with PTSD in their lifetime. As for schizophrenia (SZ), studies have shown that if a person has inherited the gene for schizophrenia and is a heavy cannabis user, they are 2-4 times more likely to develop psychosis. It is never recommended for populations with these types of diagnoses to use cannabis. It is more harmful to those with SZ, as it can intensify their symptoms and reactions. As for the efficacy of CBD as a treatment for SZ, there is still research that must be done to determine if the cannabinoid is effective for treatment or not. Or, if there are any other cannabinoids that may be beneficial for treatment. Until that research has results, health professionals recommend that those with psychosis disorders hold off on using cannabis for treatment. In this Nation, we are currently facing a mental health crisis, a suicide epidemic. Suicide is at an all-time high. Beds are full at psychiatric hospitals all across the states. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Americans between the ages of 10 to 54 years of age. Unfortunately, we are not talking about it enough. We are not checking in with loved ones enough, and as a psychology major, I highly recommend we start working more on asking each other, “How are you doing? How are you REALLY doing?” If someone appears to be sad, they more than likely are, and it may possibly change their entire mood if we just spend a moment and talk with them. An Infusion Series HALLOWEEN CANNA“BOO”SHI SPECIAL

This month, let's try a fun Halloween dish. Three different recipes result in a fantastic Canna "Boo" Shi Special. WHIPPED RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE CHEESECAKE TERPENE INFUSED CBD WORMS INGREDIENTS: 1 6 oz. box of raspberry Jello 2 pkg. unflavored Knox Gelatin 2-3 pkg. bendable straws (straighten) 3/4 cup whipped cream 1/3 cup Nestle chocolate syrup 2 cups boiling water 2 oz. CBD infused coconut oil 23 drops Cheesecake Terpenes from The Terpene Lab DIRECTIONS: In a heat safe container mix your dry ingredients together. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add it to the Jello/Knox mixture. Mix thoroughly. After about five minutes, add chocolate syrup. Next, add the CBD infused oil and mix well. Add the whipped cream as the chocolate and oil should bring down the temperature and mix thoroughly. Once everything is mixed together and cooled to room temperature, add the Terpene Lab Cheesecake Terpenes.

15-20 drops red food coloring 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch DIRECTIONS: Add cornstarch to a jar and mix with corn syrup. Mix all ingredients thoroughly in the mason jar. I just added the lid and gave it a vigorous shake. If you have to, mix well with a spoon. You should get a dark red and deep color in the end with this recipe. Put in fridge and save for later. Voila, fake blood.

Once you have your completed mixture and it has cooled enough, begin pouring into the liquid using a cup with a pour spout. Be careful not to overfill the container and spill the gelatin. Keep in mind the straws will fill to the level of what is in the container you choose. Put straws in with the bendable side down as this adds to the worms final look. Store in the fridge 4 or more hours. The longer the better as it gives all the ingredients a chance to become one. Once COMPLETELY chilled, try to pull the straws from the fridge. Grab a cutting board and rolling pin. Turn your faucet on and use cold water to “warm up” the straws. Not too much is needed, just enough to take the chill away. Place a filled straw on the cutting board and start rolling from the end. It should easily come out of the straw and... you just made an infused worm!

CANNA”BOO”SHIINFUSEDMONSTERMASHROLL INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. bag of Mahatma short grain sushi rice 12 oz. snow crab meat steamed, water removed 1 cucumber julienned 1 roasted red pepper julienned 1 package of sushi nori 1/8 cup CBD infused coconut oil 1 cup Kewpie mayo or mayo of your choice 10 drops black food coloring 10 drops orange food coloring 2 cups infused vinegar 1 tsp. sesame oil DIRECTIONS: INFUSED SUSHI RICE: First start off by washing the rice in a bowl with a strainer. Gently use cold water to rinse or “polish” the rice. The water will turn into a cloudy white as the starches are being removed. Continue until the water clears up. Be sure to remove dirty water and drain the rice each time you wash. No more than four times. After final draining, place into a rice cooker. Add equal water to each cup of rice. Cook as directed per your device. Take cooked rice, split equally into two separate large bowls and cover. Take your two cups of infused vinegar and place one cup each into two separate small bowls. Add 10 drops of black food coloring to one bowl and 10 drops of orange food coloring to the other. Mix well. While the rice is hot, mix each of your infused vinegars to the bowls of rice. Mix each so that the rice is completely dyed and cover the rice. No white rice grains should be present. Cover and keep to the side, making sure to mix the rice again in 5 minutes.

EDIBLE BLOOD FOR DECORATION INGREDIENTS: 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/4 cup Nestle Chocolate Syrup

INFUSED SNOW CRAB MIX: In a large bowl place the crabmeat and CBD oil. Mix these two first very well and then add your mayo. Add the sesame oil. Mix it all together

and place in the fridge to chill. Having this step completed beforehand is optimal. MAKING OF THE MONSTER MASH ROLL: Grab your cutting board, makisu, and knife. Place the nori onto a cutting board and be sure to have a small bowl of water ready so you can handle the rice. Start by dipping your hand in the water and rub your hands together so there's a slight amount of water lightly on each. Grab a small ball of rice and spread evenly on the nori. Make sure the rice has cooled, it should be a lot stickier now. Make sure to cover all edges of the nori with rice and it should be evenly distributed to a ¼ inch thickness. This should be on a half sheet of nori. Place roughly 3 ½ oz crab mix in the center of the riced nori sheet. Also, put your cucumber and roasted red peppers that are julienned beside the crab. Pull it to the end of the makisu and use your thumb to grab the makisu. Begin to bring it up and over to encapsulate the ingredients. Make sure you have a seal created and have the seam on the cutting board. Take your hands and gently squeeze the roll so that it is shaped. Scoot the makisu to each and press the ends. You should have a sushi roll of either orange or black. Repeat the process so that you have one roll of each color. Cut into 8 pieces each and put to the side. Grab a large plate and place the worms in the center. Make sure to stack it up high as it will settle and squirm! Take four pieces of each color sushi roll and place around the pile in a circle with the colors going from orange to black until complete. Take the blood and with a spoon, place droplets around the edges of the plate so that it looks like the picture.
