>>> FloraVega A local success story

n 2014, Nevada approved the regulations for legal cultivation licenses, and with that, FloraVega was created as a 100% locally owned entity. The ownership consists of successful Nevadans that include an owner of a local commercial dry cleaning service who provided expertise in everything about clean water and wastewater, the owner of the largest moving and storage company in Nevada, a casino executive of over 30 years that understood and appreciated a regulatory industry, and a few local attorneys. The idea of growing cannabis indoors and becoming one of the first approved cultivators to open in Las Vegas seemed like a great idea at the time as many flocked for the licenses and started to build their indoor facilities. FloraVega hired professional cultivators with experience in building and running successful facilities in Colorado and other states, as most of the pioneers in this new industry did. What transpired next was a surprise to all as no other state implemented the stringent testing that Nevada came to adopt. The first cultivators to open were the risk takers of the new industry, and as with anything not done before, it became a learning experience which many did not survive. FloraVega was founded with one overall goal, to grow the best product possible for a fair price that would create great value for all that lived, worked and visited Nevada. After all, with 100% of ownership being local from Las Vegas, the company wanted fellow Nevadans to be proud of what would be offered and sold. The company also wanted employees to feel valued and happy so they included healthcare for everyone that was employed full time, which was rare in this new industry. FloraVega decided to hire the best cannabis consultants that were offering their services, and as they believed they had, planned to learn from them and quickly develop a strong local team. What no one expected in the industry was the initial testing criteria developed by the newly formed local labs and adopted by the state to be so stringent and unforgiving. It was obvious that Nevada wanted to lead the nation in cannabis testing standards and develop the same high standards that the state was known for in the Gaming industry in order to set an example for other states to follow. Some of this testing even included failure for

14

beneficial bacteria that could be found on lettuce in a grocery store, all in an effort to ensure the market provided the cleanest possible cannabis to consumers. Adaptation to the climate of Nevada was a challenge that many cultivators faced in outfitting their facilities. Cannabis had not been grown at this scale in this environment before. Most cultivators adapted and had to modify their facilities and FloraVega was no exception, the initial budgets for construction and improvements more than doubled into the millions as they built out and retrofit the 42,000 sq. foot cultivation. Nevada’s initial program was medicinal only, and the number of people that chose to get a medical card was extremely low compared to the potential forecasts. With Nevada lab tests costing $400 for every 5 lbs tested, state and city taxes applied and dispensaries marking up the price to cover their high expenses, it was still extremely costly to the end consumer compared to what the black market was offering for years. The alternative was an untested and potentially harmful product that had no regulation or oversight regarding pesticides or nutrients and other harmful products that a consumer might be using and no taxes to pay on either end. Coupled with low participation in the medical program, there was an oversupply of what was growing to what could be sold. This turned out to be an opportunity for FloraVega to retrofit the facility and create a perfect environment, add a few million dollars of improvements, and refine strategies to ensure they would be one of the mass brands to create a loyal following. FloraVega wanted customers that would grow with them as they developed and be part of something happening and evolving that would be fairly priced and always striving for the best. As the market started to consolidate with many large international public companies purchasing approved licenses of cultivations, dispensaries and production companies (oils and edibles), FloraVega continued to reinvest and improve the growing environments and quality of the product. FloraVega has had the help of several dispensaries that stood by them through the test of time, Sahara Wellness, Inyo, Showgrow, Top Notch, Nevada Wellness Center, Releaf, Thrive and Euphoria are just a few. The relationships developed have been invaluable

FloraVega has come a very long way but what is more important is where they are going and what they are doing to continue growth, quality and implementation of successful strategies. With Nick Puliz, A Bishop Gorman High school graduate, being the General Manager from the beginning and was the project manager for the design and buildout experiencing it all, good and bad, Floravega will not make the same errors as they have in the past and remember humbling lessons and loyal followers. FloraVega then focused on its marketing and sales force, which included John Tegano, a Bishop Gorman High graduate, from the beginning and Sam McAdam, an import from Maine with a history in medical cannabis. Together, they oversee dispensary sales, marketing, brand development and relationships with customers and the community. Not long after they added Matthew Santo, who recently graduated from UNR and oversees social media and other marketing efforts.

and enabled FloraVega to refine the product and continue to adapt with the new technology being developed to grow quality cannabis. FloraVega’s philosophy was to never stop learning, as they contracted with several growers from other states with specific knowledge that would help produce the best value in the market for sale. As with any new industry, there will be lots of movement within the industry of master growers and other key personnel, and FloraVega was always looking to improve its operation and products. Each past grower has played a part of the FloraVega evolution and as they have learned from mistakes, Floravega strives to continue learning, growing and evolving. The director of operations is one of the most important people in a cultivation and as the FloraVega ownership learned, the culture of the company and the ultimate success would rely on the key management and its employees- the crew members.

16

As recreational cannabis was approved in the State, new cultivators sprang up who had received licenses but never built their facilities. As demand for the product went up, so did the quality of FloraVega as they changed their logo, standards and processes.

It is with great pride that FloraVega can formally introduce David Lloyd as our new Director of Operations and head of cultivation. David has been in the industry for over 17 years, starting in 2002 in Chicago working in the retail hydroponic industry while growing his own cannabis at home. He is no stranger to cultivating in Nevada as he was the original head of operations for the premium brand Cannabiotix and is highly regarded in the industry. David joined FloraVega in December 2019 and his positive impact was immediately evident as employees started to experience the positive work environment and learn new techniques for cultivating operations and processes. FloraVega immediately progressed to a point that the whole team is seeing stronger, healthier plants, more trichome density, vibrant colors, more specific smells, higher terpenes and a better experience overall for the end user. FloraVega is already getting kudos from existing partner dispensaries and customers as the quality continues to improve at a rapid pace, and it is only the beginning. Over the last year, FloraVega has reinvented itself with a new bold logo, packaging and new products. With prerolls becoming a larger market for the dispensaries, the quickly popular 20 Somethings and 30 Somethings were launched in late 2019. With THC percentages becoming important to consumers, FloraVega decided to introduce prerolls made from 100% flower and grouped by THC tested percentages, any flower that tested from 20-29% were sold under the 20 Something brand, and all flower testing above 30%, which is not the majority of flower sold, would be the 30 Somethings brand. This would take the guesswork out of what people were buying. FloraVega also started to color code their labels, with Red being Sativa strains, Purple being Indica strains and Green being hybrid strains. Everything the company did was with the end user in mind, to help make their decisions easier, to give them what they wanted and to take the guesswork out of the purchase. FloraVega also developed the 4grammer, a special that will be offered at various times of the year. Atypical packaged 1/8 is usually 3.54 grams, the 4 grammer is 4 grams at the same price as an 1/8th, a ½ gram for free to show appreciation to loyal FV customers and dispensary

THE LATEST partners love it as well. In the near future, as they build out specialized and technologically advanced growing rooms, FloraVega is developing a new Premium brand of highly curated flowers grown in small batches that will only use the finest nutrients, specialized growing techniques and methods. They plan to deliver the best value in the top shelf market, complementing the current FloraVega brand as the highest quality and value in the mass market category. FloraVega has also been very active in the local community, in 2019 FloraVega partnered with Las Vegas NORML and their Access for All program. This program provides medical cannabis at a large discount to patients who do not have the means to access it regularly. We have also collaborated with local non-profit organizations like the Ink Ribbon Foundation, the Las Vegas Endo March, Project Uterus and UNLV Athletic fund. As a locally owned company, FloraVega strives to make a positive impact and looks forward to continuing partnerships with local organizations to make a difference. With Nick, John, Sam and David’s leadership and skill sets, their caring and dedicated employees, past and future loyal customers, and FloraVega’s continued emphasis on quality and value, FloraVega is truly excited about what the near future holds. It’s getting better all the time.

TERPENE TALK

BY JENNIFER WALKER

Ocimene, Geraniol, Terpinolene & More the energetic effect has helped to define the strain. While ocimene definitely evokes an energetic reaction, it can also help clear out the lungs. You know that feeling when you inhale cannabis and suddenly, you’re moved to couch like there’s no tomorrow? That’s ocimene working hard to stimulate your airway and add to the potency of the flower’s influence. Medicinally speaking, this terpene has massive antiviral qualities which (in our opinion) isn’t the worst thing that you could be inhaling. Asthma? Seasonal allergies? Ocimene’s decongestant abilities can help treat the symptoms of these ailments and get you breathing deeply again.

OCIMENE Ocimene is the sweet-smelling terpene that tickles the nose and sometimes, our lungs. Thought of as a decongestant, ocimene has been known to produce the coughing jags that smoking cannabis can sometimes induce. But as a wise old stoner once said, “if you don’t cough, you don’t get off”. We digress. Herbal, earthy and lightly noted with citrus, ocimene can be found to occur naturally in fruits such as mangoes and sweet peppers, and within the herbs basil, parsley, tarragon and oregano. Wild orchids also carry a hefty dose of ocimene, making it a perfect terpene accent note for lush perfumes. Think French eau de toilette on the wristprovocative, exhilarating and mildly sweet. Within the cannabis profile, ocimene acts as a stimulant. Strains that are sativa dominant often find ocimene as a top note. In fact, sativa strains have this terpene to thank for helping to classify a sativa as a sativa;

20

Medical studies have shown that cannabis strains containing a high ocimene profile (as well as close pals myrcene and pinene) could possibly assist in alleviating symptoms of the SARS virus. Heavily antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and having antioxidant properties, ocimene is a powerful terpene. A few ocimene-heavy strains include: Super Lemon Haze, White Fire OG, Strawberry Cough, Lemon Sour Diesel, OG Kush and Amnesia. GERANIOL One terpene that comes to mind when reminiscing about sweet florals is common to many variations of plants, including our dear cannabis. It also happens to be one of our favorites, but that’s neither here nor there. Geraniol is a terpene that occurs organically in geraniums, roses, peaches, bergamot, berries (black and blue), lemongrass, and many other plant sources. The overall fruity and sweet aroma of this terpene lends itself to

usage within a wide variety of products such as perfumes, soaps, lotions and other naturally sweet-smelling body products and health aides. Bees produce this terpene naturally in their glands and scent their territories with the aromatic secretions that they produce in order to fend of predators and rival colonies. While bees love geraniol, mosquitoes hate it, which makes it a useful terpene for deterring mosquitoes. Various plant oils like citronella and rose, have geraniol as a base flavor profile note. Due to the citrus element, geraniol is also prevalent as a flavor additive for foods (namely desserts like ice cream and other sweets where that sweet, citrus profile is desired. Aside from its delicious flavor characteristics, how is the geraniol terpene beneficial as a cannabis terpene, you ask? The antioxidant, anticancer and tumor fighting qualities that it contains are used in the treatment of a wide variety of diseases and health issues. There have been studies done that show geraniol prohibits the growth of cancer cells as they pertain to colon cancer, lung cancer, oral cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver and prostate cancer. By preventing the growth and develop of cancer cells and tumors, strains that are high in this terpene provide cannabis users with added medicinal benefits. Also having antifungal and antibacterial qualities, this terpene is useful in reducing infections and prohibiting fungal growth and development- an added benefit for patients suffering with symptoms of various diseases. One of the most beneficial cannabis terpenes for the treatment of neuropathy, geraniol lowers levels of cytosolic calcium and helps to revitalize enzyme activity that may have been

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

damaged through the nerve destruction caused by peripheral nerve injury. Patients suffering with neuropathy deal with numbness, tingling, pain and weakness in the extremities.

CAMPHENE Huddle up, kids. This next terpene smells a little damp and musky, sort of like the woods after a rainstorm. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, we could only be talking about camphene.

A few cannabis strains that test high in this beneficial terpene are Amnesia Haze, Great White Shark, Lavender, OG Shark and Master Kush. Grab some and celebrate the birth of spring and an overall sense of wellbeing! TERPINOLENE Like people, there are certain terpenes that really stand out. They’re up-in-yourface, bold and bright, extra noticeable when they are around. You can smell them from a mile away. And then, there are terpenes that sort of subtly linger in the background. They sneak up on you when you least expect them to be there. A pleasant surprise, a friendly face. Terpinolene is best characterized in this way. You sort of know it’s there, you notice the light, fresh citrusy aroma, and when it’s not around, you kind of miss it. Terpinolene can be found in a wide variety of cannabis strains, however, it is rarely the standout flavor. Generally appearing in smaller amounts, this terpene offers not much in the way of the anti-inflammatory benefits that many of its relatives provide. However, it does act as an antiseptic, which makes it a valuable additive to soaps and insect repellents. The fresh, crisp quality of terpinolene also lends itself nicely as an accent flavor profile within perfumes and scented body products like creams and mists. An herbal, light, clean, woodsy and slightly piney flavor best describes terpinolene in its natural state. That’s a whole lot of adjectives. Found in apples (there’s that “fresh” flavor we were referring to), sage (the herbal quality), lilacs (light, soap-like, clean), tea tree (pine as pine can be!) and a myriad of other places where you’d least expect this multidimensional terpene to make an appearance, terpinolene definitely gets around. There are many flower strains which contain terpinolene (mainly sativa) and it is also widely used in cannabis

\\ VEGAS CANNABIS

oils thanks to a pleasantly pine and citrus flavor. Terpinolene acts as a cancer fighter as well, in fact, studies have shown it to slow the growth of cancer cells. Where terpinolene does its best work however, is in the sedative department. One of the most useful terpenes for inducing sleep and decreasing anxiety, it has been known to have a powerfully soothing effect. Terpinolene is a valuable element within a wide variety of essential oils that are useful to us in our daily lives. The evasive quality of this terpene however, means that while it is noticeable within products like oils and perfumes, it might not be as obvious within the cannabis profile. The tell tale sign that indicates the presence of terpinolene is that special pine and citrus quality, in addition to the calming, sedative-like effect. Balanced with other terpenes and cannabinoids often present in sativa strains, the soothing effect of terpinolene provides a nice Yin-Yang in the way of relaxation and peacefulness. This terpene is great for easing into a state of relaxation after a long day. A high-CBD strain (and a personal favorite) which contains a good amount of terpinolene is Sour Tsunami. Sour Tangie, Super Lemon Haze and a few more popular strains like Jack Herer, test high in this terpene, as well.

Camphene, while not the most sensually provocative terpene, is one of the most powerful. Known as “the cardiovascular terpene”, camphene has been known to help lower cholesterol levels and triglycerides. You’ll typically find this terpene used in common fragrances and cosmetic products, as well as household cleaners and some topical medications. Due to camphene's unique ability to fight fungus, it is often used to treat skin conditions like eczema and athlete’s foot. Psoriasis got you down? Fret not! Camphene is a widely used therapeutic treatment for chronic health conditions that can flare up and wreak havoc with our nervous and cardiovascular systems. As an addition to other natural terpenes, camphene can assist in the treatment of respiratory issues like congestion and bronchitis. Camphene as an ingredient in Tulsi oil (a combination of cineole, eugenol and camphene) can help treat T.B. damaged lungs and cancer caused by smoking. Because camphene is such a powerful terpene used in a myriad of preventative treatments for health and wellness, it sometimes gets a less than exciting rap. While not as sexy as say, limonene with a fresh and summery citrus appeal, or as cannabis-synonymous as it’s close sibling pinene (which emits a more powerfully fir tree fragrance) camphene is mostly associated with medicine. Topical ointments. Citronella candles. Turpentine. Ya know, domestic daily routine kind of stuff. However, what it lacks in a distinct flavor profile, it more than makes up for in benefit. In an organic state, camphene produces tiny dust particles which can irritate the nose and throat. And due to the scarcely white (or colorless) appearance and musky odor, it is often associated with camphor. Camphene has been used in manmade camphor production, proving to be quite useful as an insecticide

21

agent. Growing in natural conditions, cannabis can only benefit from the bugdeterring camphene terpene. Belonging to a group of over 100 minor terpenes found within cannabis, recent research suggests that camphene is excellent for reducing the risk of heart disease. Relatedly, it’s also used to lower the possibility of stroke and heart attack, which makes it a great natural alternative for patients looking to diminish the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Other terpenes such as linalool, pinene, myrcene, and beta-caryophyllene (while still useful for wellness) aren’t as effective for lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Let’s talk strains. Generally more prevalent in indica strains, Ghost OG, Strawberry Banana and ACDC also feature a camphene profile. Additionally, you can find camphene in nutmeg, ginger, rosemary, holy basil and conifer. There is a chance of vaporizing camphene during the cooking or smoking process. So to avoid this, make sure that camphene strains aren’t exposed to heat over 318 degrees fahrenheit.

22

PINENE You know that piney, Christmas tree flavor? The fresh fir of the forest, the brightly unmistakable earthy and crisp scent of the woods, the trees. The next terpene we’re celebrating is beloved pinene.

which love to linger and contribute to cavities, antibacterial mastic contains up to 70% pinene. Assuming pinene is mainly responsible for lending its health properties to the treatment of bad breath and dental issues in this way, proves its versatility.

Not only is pinene the world’s most common and recognizable terpene, it’s also one of the most beneficial. Loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, pinene offers a myriad of health perks like fighting against lung congestion and improving breathing, encouraging overall alertness and neutralizing mild THC-related memory loss. Studies show pinene to be a bronchodilator, opening up those lungs and helping combat the side effects of asthma and bronchial infections. Inhale deeply, friends- pinene is good for you!

The fundamental terpene in pine trees that gives them their unique scent, pinene has a familiar earthy and fresh quality. You know that special smell of the outdoors? Reminiscent of a wintery backdrop, green fir trees and seasonal cheer…that’s the specific flavor profile exclusive to pinene. Found in large amounts in cannabis, it’s also a major constituent of turpentine. Containing both alpha and beta isomers, alphapinene is what is most commonly found in cannabis and plant genetics. Popular pinene-rich sativa strains such as Bubba Kush, Trainwreck, Jack Herer and of course, any of the “pine” strains contain that pine-rich flavor profile and natural scent.

Pinene is found in pine needles (obvi), herbs like basil, rosemary and parsley, spicy orange peels, a variety of marijuana strains, and other sources such as mastic. Extracted from mastic trees, mastic is widely used in dentistry and aids in dental hygiene as it fights against tooth decay and gum disease. Reducing destructive oral bacteria

In addition to benefiting our lungs, our brains and our palates, pinene is also well known for anti-cancer properties. Traditional Chinese medicine provides evidence that alpha-pinene tests

show inhibitory functionality against hepatoma carcinoma cells. Stopping (or slowing) the growth of cancerous tumors is a major benefit to the effect of pinene on dangerous cells. Animals exposed to pinene in their habitats showed reduction in the growth of melanoma, which means that this terpene most definitely assists with cancer therapy. Other therapeutic uses include analgesic (excellent for pain relief), antibacterial, prevention of oxidation of molecules in the body, assists in better sleep by inducing and enhancing the REM sleep phase, and a key component of the endocannabinoid system. Commonly found in essential oil extracts such as eucalyptus and rosemary, this scent profile is most commonly evident in forest or tree blends. Organic Christmas candles, anyone? Perfume? That green air-freshener that hangs from your rearview mirror? All pinene inspired. Unfortunately, not everyone loves pinene- insects seem to abhor it, which makes it a useful base for common insecticides. Whether smoking it, smelling it, applying it or healing with it, the pinene terpene enriches our lives in so many ways. LIMONENE Terpenes give cannabis that distinctive aroma. You know the aroma we’re talking about…from pineapple, watermelon, blueberry, skunky and earthy scents like pine or mint, terpenes aid in the enjoyment and experience of using cannabis. The glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD also secrete terpenes. These oils give cannabis its flavor profile. Terpenes were developed in cannabis in order to keep predators at bay while also providing an attractive aroma in which to entice pollinating insects. Weather, soil conditions, age and climate all play a role in how terpenes develop in various strains of cannabis.

types of terpene. With a citrus aroma, limonene aids in the treatment of depression and anxiety, can help reduce gastric reflux, assists in the absorption of cannabinoids via the digestive system (much like a lemon aperitif before a meal) and provides a general relief of stress. Lemons are light and sunny, and similarly, limonene elevates the mood and promotes a feeling of wellness. Another happy side effect of limonene is its antifungal and antibacterial properties. Think about the use of lemon as a base for cleaning, for detoxifying and freshening- the concept is the same.

So far, well over one hundred variations of terpenes have been discovered in the cannabis plant. Terpenes each have a specific type and makeup that is related to specific strains of cannabis. An example of this would be a particular strain and its offshoots will all have the same fragrance profile, or at the very least, a flavor that is in the same vein. Terpenes interact with other composites in the cannabis plant, such as cannabinoids. Strains which have been bred to contain higher levels of THC, may have reduced levels of other cannabinoids in their profiles. Because of this, there is a belief that terpenes are more important in discerning subtleties between cannabis specimens. Terpenes have individual effects that are uniquely specific. One type may elevate your mood, another might encourage deep relaxation or even induce sleep. Terpenes can add great depth to the botanic creativity of cultivating and enjoying cannabis. Also, terpenes assist in our body’s capacity to receive the medicinal benefits of cannabinoids, and they make the experience that much more enjoyable. Limonene is one of the more prevalent

Limonene occurs in smaller, trace amounts of a cannabis flower’s composition. Mainly appearing in strains of sativa, there are some indica strains that do feature this terpene as well. If you’ve ever encountered specific strains that take on that pine or citrusy type of fragrance, you’re more than likely in the presence of limonene. The reaction is one of pure bliss, calm, happiness and all the therapeutic benefits of limonene rolled into a pleasant aroma. Limonene works to help reduce the feelings of paranoia that THC can sometimes produce. It also aids in assisting the body in fighting cancer and other diseases. You can enjoy limonene by selecting strains that have high levels in their composition. However, you can also reap the benefits of limonene by using terpene extracts that can be added to cannabis infused body products, since this terpene has a high absorption rate through the skin. Cannabis dabs can also be treated with limonene before usage for added benefit. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, limonene is one of the most powerful and beneficial terpenes available and is certain to lighten your mood and heighten your cannabis experience.

MANAGING ATTORNEY, CALLISTER LAW GROUP

The “Cannab-Esq.” Chronicles A Legal Perspective for Cannabis Consumers

26

Hey everybody, your favorite cannabis-friendly legal mind is back! I’d like to apologize for not getting an article out in time for last month’s issue of Vegas Cannabis Magazine, but every now and then I get extremely busy with trials at work, and I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this before, but I also have four little ones at home. With their ages being 5, 6, 7, and 9, they keep me extremely busy. Anyways, the kids are in bed and I just indulged in a little bit of Kabunky Blackcard OG badder, so I’m geared up and ready to go! Let’s get to it with a little update on the legal-landscape of cannabis in Nevada.

won out and Summerlin will not be getting the new dispensary. While the proposed dispensary was outside of all the required buffers from churches, parks, schools, etc., it was still determined that the proposed dispensary would not be a “good fit” for that neighborhood. But while Nevada CRT may have lost this first battle, they can re-apply for the special use permit after a one year waiting period. Hopefully the opponents of the proposal will eventually come around and you Summerlin folks will get easier and quicker access to your medicinal (and recreational) needs.

Last month, Governor Sisolak finally named the first members of the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board. For those of you that don’t remember, the Cannabis Compliance Board is going to be the regulatory authority in Nevada over all things marijuana. The Cannabis Compliance Board is tasked with overseeing and guiding Nevada’s booming cannabis industry, and is analogous to the Nevada Gaming Control Board – which oversees gaming here in Nevada. Although the Board doesn’t officially take effect and gain power until July 1, 2021, Governor Sisolak has started filling the Board with some pretty stellar names so far. In February, Governor Sisolak named former Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael L. Douglas as chairman of the Cannabis Compliance Board. Former Chief Justice Douglas served on the Nevada Supreme Court from 2004 to 2019. Needless to say, he will definitely know how to apply the law at his new gig with the Cannabis Compliance Board.

And while residents of Summerlin put up a fight to keep dispensaries out of their neighborhood, the City of Henderson has been taking an opposite approach. The Henderson City Council has recently been discussing making changes to the city’s marijuana laws in an effort to get more dispensaries open. As of now, dispensaries located in Henderson are required to sell both recreational and medical marijuana. The City Council is seriously considering altering this law in order to allow pending recreational marijuana licensees in Henderson to open up shop and begin operating. The State of Nevada is unlikely to release any new medical marijuana licenses in the near future, so that means unless the city does change their current law/ordinance, no new dispensaries will be able to open up in Henderson. It would be smart for the City of Henderson to move forward with the proposed change. Marijuana tax revenue is highly coveted, and I know the city doesn’t want to miss out on any of it!

Along with former Chief Justice Douglas, Governor Sisolak also appointed the former chairman of the Nevada Gaming Control Board – Dennis K. Neilander – to the Cannabis Compliance Board. Neilander was at the helm of the Gaming Control Board for 10 years, so just like with Douglas, there is no doubt he is familiar with how these regulatory boards operate. And as an added bonus, Neilander is also a licensed attorney in the State of Nevada. I like the Governor’s picks. The experience in the law and in regulated industry that these two gentlemen possess is unmatched and should help the Board get operational with ease. It’s yet to be seen how the whole Cannabis Compliance Board will play out and what effect it will ultimately have on the industry, but with all the issues we experienced last year involving testing facilities and the licensing process, having a centralized regulatory authority specific to marijuana seems like a must-have at this point.

And as a quick little PSA: if you are a holder of a Nevada marijuana establishment license – whether cultivation, production, or otherwise, please be careful when considering selling your license to another party. In the past five months, I’ve had four different people come to my office seeking advice on how to collect the remaining money owed from the sale of their license. And once I sit and hear the full story, it becomes quite obvious that these people were straight scammed out of their license. Most of the time the paperwork is shoddy as well. The moral of the story? BE CAREFUL! If you are considering selling your marijuana establishment license, please speak to an attorney and have an attorney draft up the documentation. You do not want to find out after the fact that certain terms of the agreement you thought would be enforceable aren’t. Don’t let yourself get taken advantage of. You don’t need to call me, but please, call an attorney for legal advice before signing or agreeing to anything! Please, #StayWoke!

And while the State of Nevada as a whole has made massive strides in the acceptance of marijuana use, clearly the residents of a specific Ward in Summerlin aren’t so open-minded. Nevada CRT, LLC had applied to open a marijuana dispensary near Sahara and Fort Apache, and was seeking a required special use permit in order to do so. Opponents and proponents of the dispensary battled it out at numerous meetings, but ultimately, the opponents of the project

>>>>>>> CBD for Sleep Support

BY curt robbins

Hemp extracts have been employed for centuries to aid in sleep support. Conditions ranging from insomnia and sleep apnea to narcolepsy and somnambulism have benefitted from the administration of distillations of hemp and its constituent wellness molecules, cannabinoids and terpenes. More than 80 sleep disorders affect humans. Unfortunately, lack of quality sleep can lead to many diseases and conditions. In the United States, about 40 million people suffer from long-term chronic sleep disorders, while an additional 20 million experience occasional or episodic sleep issues. Overall, sleep disturbances are the most common health problem in America. “Indian hemp” was introduced to the United States as a wellness supplement in 1843 by pioneering Irish physician Dr. William O’Shaughnessy—following his years of observation and record keeping in India. O’Shaughnessy recommended hemp for a variety of conditions, including insomnia. In 1860, German researcher Bernard Fronmueller wrote, “Of all anaesthetics ever proposed, Indian hemp is the one which produced a narcotism most closely resembling...natural sleep without causing any extraordinary excitement of the vessels, any particular suspension of secretions, [and] without fear of a dangerous reaction [or] consecutive paralysis.” Quality sleep is characterized by several elements, including onset, duration, and quality (such as time spent in REM deep sleep). One subjective metric of sleep quality is a feeling of being “rested and restored” and ready for the day upon waking. “Sleep plays a housekeeping role that removes toxins in your brain that build up while you are awake,” reported the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institute of Health in a 2013 research study entitled “How Sleep Clears the Brain.”

HOW CBD HELPS SLEEP DISORDERS

Cannabidiol, or CBD, has been found to offer a biphasic response in terms of its effect on energy level and sleep. In other words, this molecule delivers varying efficacy at different dosages. In some use cases, the effect related to a specific dose may be polar opposite of that produced by a different dose. For example, Dose A of CBD may result in a sedative effect, while Dose B may produce a stimulated, alert response. At low doses, CBD seems to increase alertness and to demonstrate efficacy for use in the treatment of daytime sleepiness—including one of its major manifestations, narcolepsy. Conversely, one study indicated that a strong dose of CBD (160 mg) decreased sleep interruptions while simultaneously increasing sleep duration.

30

Many wellness professionals favor CBD for the treatment of sleep disorders because it features an acceptable safety profile for patients. According to Dr. Sunil Pai, an Integrative Medicine expert and author of the 2016 book An Inflammation Nation, CBD should be considered by all physicians before prescribing traditional pharmaceuticals. During an exclusive interview with Vegas Cannabis Magazine, Pai said, “CBD from hemp oil is not addictive and features no rebound potential or disruption of REM cycles—unlike prescription medications, which can do both. Additionally, my patients feel more relaxed [with CBD]. The added anti-inflammatory effects can also assist them in feeling more comfortable during sleep.” At high doses, CBD may exhibit lower efficacy. A 1990 study entitled “Antianxiety Effect of Cannabidiol in the Elevated Plusmaze” that was published in the journal Psychopharmacology supported other research by finding that low doses of CBD reduced anxiety, but revealing also that this efficacy disappeared at higher doses. This research identified a potential optimal dose range for CBD. Concluded the study’s authors, “These results indicate that CBD causes a selective anxiolytic [anxiety reducing] effect...within a limited range of doses.” A 2016 human study, although it involved a single subject, demonstrated the mechanism of improvements in sleep disturbances and disorders due to decreased anxiety. Like others, the study observed that CBD provides no major side effects (unlike many traditional treatments). “Pharmaceutical medications provided partial relief, but results were not longlasting and there were major side effects.” The study’s authors concluded the CBD was effective, in this particular case, in the treatment of a 10-year-old child with severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “This case study provides clinical data that support the use of cannabidiol oil as a safe treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in a young girl with posttraumatic stress disorder.”

RESEARCH STUDIES

A 2019 human trial research study involving 72 participants entitled “Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series” that was published in The Permanente Journal investigated the role of CBD in the treatment of a range of sleep disorders. Reported the study’s authors, “A recent surge in scientific publications has found preclinical and clinical evidence documenting value for CBD in some neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, anxiety, and schizophrenia.” Concluded the study, “Anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 57 patients (79%) and remained decreased during the

VEGASCANNABISMAG.COM

study duration,” demonstrating a marked improvement in the majority of study participants. Improvements in sleep among participants were slightly lower, but demonstrated positive change during the course of the study. “Sleep scores improved within the first month in 48 patients (67%), but fluctuated over time. In this chart review, CBD was well tolerated in all but three patients.”

improving sleep in a young girl with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.”

A 2017 research study entitled “Cannabinoids and Sleep: A Review of the Literature” that was published in the journal Current Psychiatry Reports found that CBD may play a role in the treatment of sleep disturbances such as insomnia.

Reported the study’s authors, “The systemic acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep latency in the light period of the day of administration.”

Reported the study’s authors: “Preliminary research into cannabis and insomnia suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia.” The study also reported that “CBD may hold promise for REM sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness.”

A 2006 study entitled “Cannabidiol Modulates Sleep in Rats” that was published in the journal FEBS Letters found that CBD controls wakefulness and alertness. The study concluded, “Since CBD induces alertness, it might be of therapeutic value in sleep disorders such as excessive somnolence.”

A 2016 study entitled “Endocannabinoid Signaling Regulates Sleep Stability” that was published in the journal PLoS One found that the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) is responsible for “NREM stability” (quality sleep). Thus, the study concluded that any hemp-derived cannabinoids that bind directly with cellular receptors in the ECS possess the potential to influence a variety of bodily systems, including sleep.

A 2016 study entitled “Effectiveness of Cannabidiol Oil for Pediatric Anxiety and Insomnia as Part of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Case Report” that was published in the journal The Permanente Journal investigated the efficacy of CBD oil in the treatment of insomnia resulting specifically from PTSD.

A 2013 study entitled “Effects of Acute Systemic Administration of Cannabidiol on Sleep-wake Cycle in Rats” that was published in the peer-reviewed Oxford-based journal Psychopharmacology found that CBD improved overall sleep in rodent subjects.

The study concluded, “Cannabidiol oil, an increasingly popular treatment of anxiety and sleep issues, has been documented as being an effective alternative to pharmaceutical medications. Well I guess it’s time for a Ruckus Rant again. Things in this state just keep getting more corrupt and hopefully by making people aware of it, we can get some of it fixed. I know I’ve used this space to bitch about labs and their results, THC levels, corporate greed and the like for years but at least now I can back up what I say. Since Rudy Giuliani’s buddies got caught trying to bribe their way into the Nevada cannabis industry, the governor decided to put together a task force to keep all the millionaires in this industry in compliance. Then a whistleblower came forth to the FBI about the shady shit these companies are pulling. Then labs started getting closed down. Seemed like things were really about to change for the better. But, then you gotta start digging deeper. Governor Sisolak just appointed two more people to his cannabis commission today. One, a former Judge (I wonder how many cannabis related cases he saw before getting into the industry?) And the other, the former Chair of The Nevada Gaming Board. Hmmmm...how has gaming and

34

cannabis gotten along so far? It hasn’t! So why the hell get someone from Gaming? I would have understood liquor before gaming. Just goes to show how out of touch our government is with cannabis. Don’t get me wrong, we’re doing a lot better than most states (hell, in Iowa you can only get 4.5 grams every 90 days!) but there is a shitload of work that still needs to be done. I read where one lab was closed down for letting cannabis with three times the allowable limit of MOLD and YEAST get out to the public. They allowed that. The lab decided getting money from cultivators was more important than the health and safety of the very people they are paid to protect! They are our only resource for having any kind of scientific data to prove what we are getting is safe and how effective it might be for different ailments. But when they decide to test in any fashion they wish and they are not regulated to all test the same way, we are going to (and are now) having problems. Here’s another one (and I don’t mind writing about it as it’s public record) Certified AG Labs in Sparks, Nevada was shut down for a bit because they were inflating THC levels by 10%, “unintentionally destroyed or concealed evidence”, “failed to maintain surveillance systems” (turned off the cameras), and “neglected to keep records related to seed-to-sale tracking”. Now let’s put all of that together. They lied to the cultivators, the dispensaries, the state, and worst of all us, the patients, about what they are spending their hard earned money on. In

my (and a lot of other peoples case) using cannabis as medicine, hid evidence, and didn’t report the samples they took to the state? And as of now, that are back in business and all they got was a $70,000 fine? Evidently, $70,000 is all you gotta pay if you get caught giving fake scientific data to, not only recreational but also medical, patients; a damn slap on the wrist. These people make that much in a week or less! It just makes me sick. As I’m writing this, word just came in from The Department of Taxation that 30 dispensaries received 20 different products that “failed an independent laboratory’s microbial testing for mold, yeast, andbbacteria.” That testing lab was Cannex who is doing business as RSR Labs. They allowed flower and prerolls that could very possibly hurt someone with a compromised immune system to be sold at 30 different shops throughout our state. Those products were sold between October and July, they are not in the shops now. I see patients everyday that have weakened immune systems and serious lung problems. To receive the kind of money they do and have a license from the state to TEST our cannabis in an effort to keep us safe from molds, bacterias, pesticides, heavy metals, and left over nutrients, and blatantly LIE to us just makes me sick. I thought we paid more to keep us safe from things like that? These people are more criminal than any black market I’ve ever dealt with. At least on the street they were honest and said they didn’t know. So when you see me going on and on again and again about how these THC numbers are just marketing schemes

made up by millionaires who just want your money, at least now I can say there is proof. You may ask yourself, how does Ruckus find out about all this stuff? I study. I check a few different websites everyday. I go to Las Vegas NORML meetings every chance I get. I try to surround myself with other activists who are in this business because we care about people’s general wellbeing and want to see others feel better and alleviate their pain. Unfortunately not everyone thinks like me. So again I ask you to go to NORML meetings, go to Budtender Fight Club, go to any function that discusses cannabis. Question the person you see representing these companies in pop-ups in dispensaries, question the Budtenders, question our government! Speak up but be sure to listen, too. There is still a lot of wrong information out there. If you hear something wrong, question it, correct them if you're sure. We still gotta educate and remove the stigma! There are a shitload of people who mean well but are still stuck in “Reefer Madness” thinking. It’s not their fault. I am pushing 50, I was told cannabis was a gateway drug with no medicinal qualities and would get you thrown in prison your whole life. It’s hard to drown that out. But it is possible. Especially when you explain it in ways that just make sense! As for me, I’ll be back from time to time to remind you how screwed up (and sometimes wonderful) things are. But also keep an eye out for me on the stage. I’m finally returning to my first love- playing music. I’ve been learning old 1930’s-1950’s jazz music and having a blast. “Reefer Man”, “If You're a Viper”, “When I Get Low I Get High”...lotsa songs about smoking dope, drinkin’, and that special gal. We’re called The Souvenairs. Not Souvenirs, SouvenAIRS! Smooth like silk Daddy-o and ready to get you jumpin’ and jivin’! Our first gig will be March 14, 2020 at The Golden Tiki on Spring Mountain Road. Come on out, watch some fun, old timey music and we’ll talk about cannabis in between sets; the more we talk, the more we learn. ANX I E TY?

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting some 40 million American adults every year, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. On a global scale, anxiety also ranks atop the list of mental health disorders as an estimated 284 million people suffered from some form of it in 2017. The medications most often prescribed to “treat” illnesses like Panic Disorder, General Anxiety, ObsessiveCompulsive Disorder, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder come with fine print warnings of side effects like dry mouth, drowsiness during the day and insomnia at night, constipation, sexual dysfunction, dizziness, hypertension, heightened blood pressure, and so many other disturbing risks.

38

Studies continue to reveal that anxiety medications and antidepressants – particularly those that feature SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) – can not only prove to be completely ineffective at addressing (or healing!) the root cause of one’s anxiety and/or depression, but, in fact, can raise agitation and anxiety levels drastically, and these drugs are all too often associated with increased risk of suicide. Additionally, patients are often overprescribed conflicting medications from varying doctors that, once combined, can form extremely dangerous or even deadly concoctions. This is what our health care system is giving to the most vulnerable among us – from our ailing kids to our traumatized military veterans.

THERE’S GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY When I first started smoking weed as a teenager, my friends and I would drive around looking for “sesh spots” where we could safely park our car and blaze some brick weed while blasting The Beatles, or where we could hike from the car to some secluded spot to partake in the pot. I will never forget one day, riding home from the mall, taking the scenic route through the hills, when we spotted a grove of orange trees. An hour later we were sitting in a bed of orange blossoms, stoned to our stems, when we decided it was time to leave. One look around, though, froze us in our tracks as every single tree, row after row, suddenly seemed to be interwoven with a massive spider web linking

it to the next. In the middle of each of these webs appeared a massive spider, poised to strike at any moment. How much of that was real, and how much of it was our young overanxious minds is anyone’s guess, but we army crawled out of there, nevertheless. That wasn’t my last bout with cannabis-fueled anxiety or paranoia, but I feel that I have outgrown it and, in hindsight, it seems that my set and setting probably contributed to my mental reaction in those situations much more than the marijuana did. Yes, new cannabis consumers are highly likely to face their own degree of anxiety after a few tokes until their tolerance builds, but it will, and most regular cannabis consumers that I know use weed to raise their spirits and lower their anxiety. Why is that? A new study just published in the scientific journal Neuron has found a demonstrable method of manipulating certain molecules naturally present in the human body (dully named 2-AG) in a manner that could allow them to ‘roadblock’ the neural highway along which a potential anxiety attack would travel to fruition. These 2-AG molecules interact with receptors in the human brain that we refer to as the endocannabinoid system (ECS), that essential network found within all of us that your

family doctor has probably never heard of. Among so many other amazing things, our endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in moderating our anxiety levels, and like any other part of our body, the health and effectiveness of our ECS can deteriorate. In fact, the results from this most recent study reveal that as test subjects were introduced to stressful or traumatic situations, both the 2-AG levels and the ECS itself began to break down, as the delicate pathways between the amygdala and the pre-frontal cortex begin to fuse together in dangerous ways. This process can be accelerated by prescription anti-anxiety meds which can fan the flames of depression. If only nature provided a plant that grows like a weed and is chock full of hundreds of ECSconducive cannabinoids… The researchers behind this study recognize that cannabis use can, in fact, contribute to a healthier endocannabinoid system, but they instead plan to focus their efforts on how to synthetically boost 2-AG, citing their desire to provide a medical solution that avoids what they consider to be detrimental side effects of medical marijuana use. “The hope would be that this would allow one to experience

some of the beneficial effects people use medical cannabis for, in terms of anxiety and stress-relief, without some of the side effects,” says Sachin Patel, co-author of the study published recently in Neuron and researcher at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Patel hypothesizes that a collapse of the ECS could be at the root of full-blown anxiety disorders. How many suicides are a result of such a collapse? He and his team’s work so far has literally been conducted on stressed-out mice running a maze in a lab, and he anticipates that it may be another 3-4 years before we see relevant studies in this niche performed on people. Except… we already are. As far back as 2009, studies have been showing that medical marijuana patients anecdotally turn to the plant for help with anxiety and depression. With all due respect to the medical community at large, 99% of you didn’t know what the ECS even was 10 years ago, and way too many of you still don’t acknowledge it. Sometimes, the patient knows what’s best for themselves and people

have been self-medicating with marijuana for millennia.

Of course not. Not for everyone… but if it can help ANYONE, doesn’t our society have a moral obligation to make that help readily available?

may finally be able to provide effective solutions to those suffering. Every time that the cannabis plant is found to be at the root of those solutions, however, expect some scientist to try to single out and simulate what they perceive to be the “cure”, failing to appreciate the full spectrum of healing that the plant provides.

The fact of the matter is that anxiety can strike anyone at any time but its depth and severity can be mitigated, it appears, by a healthy endocannabinoid system. That’s dope!

Dear Mary Jane, I believe that it is safe to say that marijuana has some definite health advantages for people with assorted illnesses. CBD is a tremendous boon for people with all sorts of inflammatory disorders, such as arthritis. My question: do you think such compounds would have a positive effect on house pets? Farm animals? How can you interview a dog to see if a treatment works? I have two older pets, a cat and a dog, and they are both getting a bit stiff as they grow older. Do you think that CBD might help them? Dr. Do-as-little-as-possible

My dearest Dr. Do, I have always said that you can tell a lot about a society or culture based on two factors: their pornography, and how they treat their animals. You mentioned your kink about nuns on roller skates eating ice cream, which is admittedly a bit odd. However, your concern about your precious fur babies (I hate that term, but it is appropriate) tells me that you are clearly a good person. I have had many pets throughout the course of my life, with my dog Kahlúa being atop the list and followed by Scotty, Brandy, Duchess, Duke, Bella, Greystoke, Cosmo, BB, Rey, Nelly and Q-tip. The one thing that all of my animals, past and present, share in common is the fact that I would have done anything to improve their quality of life. Seeing as how marijuana and its many applications are growing exponentially in today’s society, it only makes sense that it will intersect with our pets. Exercise, diet and positive human interaction are doubtlessly the best things that you can provide for your pet, but what about my dog who can no longer jump on the couch, at least not on the first attempt, because his shoulders are stiff? Might CBD help? Is there any way that we can test this theory? Are dogs affected by placebo effect? Many years ago, I went to a local acupuncturist (Dr. Fiona) and she used to tell me how she would use acupuncture to treat animals. Mind you, this practice was not limited to only house pets, but she also used to work with farm animals as well. Sounds crazy, right? She explained to me that, actually, animals are better than humans when it comes to judging treatment effectiveness. Placebo effect is no joke; if you believe that a treatment is going to help you, it most likely will, at least for a little while. Animals, for better or worse, are not afflicted with such mental conventions. Consider a dog. A dog lives in

the moment. A dog is hungry now, or tired now, or playful now. Dogs do not plan on their moods, nor do they have any real expectations of anything beyond the right now. So your dog hurts it’s shoulder chasing a rabbit. All the dog knows is that it is in pain and limited by its injury; Dr. Fiona comes along, aligns his chakras, and the pain is gone. You tell me: does this treatment work? On the level of keeping an animal happy, I would say hell yes it does, and I see treating animals with CBD the same way. Not to sound depressing or anything, but it is my goal to get through life with as little pain and suffering as possible, and I extend that same courtesy to my animals. As far as dosing amount goes, you will probably have to go by trial and error, as there are no real CBD dosage guidelines for animals. On other hand, there are no real CBD dosing guidelines for humans, either. Just like THC edibles for people, you are going to have to take your time and experiment with appropriate dosages and such. Speaking of THC edibles, there is one thing that I must point out. With the legalization of marijuana in the Las Vegas valley and throughout the other parts of the country with legalized marijuana, veterinarians are getting lots of panicked phone calls due to animals accidentally consuming marijuana. To the best of my knowledge there have been no fatalities from this, but it is still a good idea to keep your weed out of Doggy‘s reach. One last thing. I have never been able to stand people who put bandannas on their dogs. Even if your dog is using CBD, please avoid the temptation to go and buy a dreadlocks wig for him to wear. Just, don’t. Shit like that is why dogs run into traffic.

>>>>>>> A TALE OF NONSENSE

The Ever Changing Cannabis Industry

Cannabis, what a topic of discussion! We live in a time where you can hear families engaged in a marijuana discussion at your local Olive Garden, where weed seems to literally grow on social media, and depending on what state you live in you can’t go more than a few miles without running into a dispensary. Many of us never thought we would see the day! But with changing laws, greedy business practices, and the first death to occur from a marijuana-based product, legalization isn’t exactly turning out to be the shining Knight coming to save the day that we were hoping for. At first, legalization was incredible. No more shady meetups in parking lots, hiding to medicate, or worrying about the smell. Seeing a police car behind you in traffic became a little less horrifying and we could finally discuss cannabis use in the open and begin to learn about the plant. Dispensaries and cannabis clubs began popping up, flower and concentrates became cleaner and more attractive, and an entire new community literally emerged from the shadows. This gave birth to large scale cannabis events and conventions, local weekend sesh’s, and a hope for a brighter future for veteran cannabis users. Each year more states were allowing medical use of the plant while other states went recreational, allowing cannabis use for all adultshow incredible! Research began and cross breeding seeds became an actual science. Cannabis use as a legal medicine could allow our nation to ween off the harmful pharmaceuticals and bring our bodies back to a more natural state. Everything seemed to be falling perfectly into place. Enter millennials, baby boomers, and greed. The birth of this “new” industry

44

was also this decade’s gold rush. Everyone and their brother wanted a piece of the new industry, even those with no knowledge or experience. Laws changed becoming cloudier and more confusing, licensing fees skyrocketed, and the black marketers started using very dangerous methods of growing and extracting to stay competitive. Big banks refused to (and still will not) accept money from THC or CBD based businesses, major corporations like Google and Amazon have blacklisted individuals from their sites for life (I personally had to start a new Amazon account with a new credit card and address after being banished) and all the legal licenses appeared to be earmarked specifically for the rich. All of a sudden, the entire industry had changed. Large cannabis businesses turned corporate overnight, many were owned and being run by people who had never even smoked a joint. CBD began popping up in gas stations while growers began using Myclobutanil (Eagle20) and Monsanto’s poisonous Miracle Grow on plants to rush their harvests and combat diseases. Vape cartridges became toxic and caused the first cannabis related death while the pioneer states of this movement, like California, adopted newer, industry crushing laws. Police were still raiding shops, and everyone seems just a bit confused about the difference between THC and CBD. All of this change has made it impossible for the average Joe to become educated and get a piece of the pie. With large companies like Medmen killing the industry with greed and bad business practices, it seems that money quickly became more important than healing our minds and bodies. So once again, to many of us, cannabis is still not receiving the recognition that it truly deserves.

On the more positive side of the industry, spas and health clinics are emerging to help users understand why and how THC and CBD work. With the assistance of testing and research, cannabis is beginning to come into its own light. Now that society is beginning to realize that growing, extracting, and producing cannabis is not a simple task and it will not make everyone an overnight billionaire, we’re seeing a more serious status with the plant and its future. We now have access to testimonies, tutorials, and scientific proof that cannabis as a medicine is working! It makes one wonder why it was illegal for so long while big pharma was spotlighted, creating addicts and killing thousands every year. A cannabisbased company still cannot use certain words like “cure” or “heal” even if you believe it to be true, but big pharma can say anything they want, just like a true bully. Being a part of this industry has taught me that as long as money is King, individual morals, integrity, and even our own physical and mental health will continue to take a backseat to greed and control. If we continue to fight the good fight and let nature do its thing, we may have a chance for a healthier and less anxious tomorrow. TALES FROM THE CRIP

World War III: Part 2 Well, here it is one month later since the last clarion call of World War Three, and it hasn’t happened yet. I get it, these things take time! You dance up to the brink, then you take two steps back, the members of the “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists” advance their clock towards nuclear midnight with their ghastly predictions, and then we move on with our lives.

As a middle-aged man, too old to get into the fight anymore but still fantasizing about being a badass, I really like war movies.

46

Six months from now, North Korea will ramp up their saber rattling again, people will start to fear collusion between North Korea and Iran (even though they are 4000 miles apart), and the hysteria will begin anew. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It’s true. Do you know one thing that doesn’t change? Celluloid. Film. Movies. As I have previously mentioned, my miserable physical body results in a great deal of internal living for me. It’s cool, don’t feel bad; in my head, everybody is nice to me as well as extremely interesting. As I explained last month, music is a big part of my life; another big part of my life is the viewing, or sometimes multiple viewings, of movies. As a middle-aged man, too old to get into the fight anymore but still fantasizing about being a badass, I really like war movies. I know, there is more than enough violence and hatred that already exists in our world without me using it to entertain myself, but tough shit! I like war movies! I also enjoy books about war, so maybe we will discuss that next month. Unless peace breaks out in the meantime, but I don’t think that we have to worry about that. So, in random but specific order, please enjoy this list of my favorite war movies. Black Hawk Down. As is often the case, this movie was based on a newspaper documentary which was then turned into a book by a journalist named Todd Bowden (gotta watch out for those journalist types). I’m guessing that you have likely seen this movie, as it seems to be on every time I turn on the TV. As I have come to understand it, the film representation of the event was pretty much right-on; a few things were changed, as they always are, but every time I watch this movie I come away impressed. The United States Army 75th Ranger Regiment really exists; every time that shit hits fan somewhere in the world, the Rangers are wheels-up and on their way within 12 hours. I will not go all fanboy here, but suffice it to say that I am glad that these guys are on our side. Also portrayed are members of the mythical Delta force, who are the elite of the elite of the elite with regard to combat operations. You likely have not heard anything else about them beyond this movie because they don’t officially exist.

a patient's perspective

By Peter Jay

The movie details the 1993 assault on the city of Mogadishu, Somalia, where 20 servicemen lost their lives when the entire population of Mogadishu picked up AK-47s and RPG‘s and rained down upon the beleaguered US forces. CIA estimates of the action have declared between 300 and 600 Somali dead and another 700 to 1000 wounded, which really means that this was one of the most one-sided ass kickings in US military history. So I kind of like that. We Were Soldiers. One question that I have always have about any war movie regards it’s authenticity. Full disclosure: although I did serve in the US Army back in the mid-80s, I have never seen any type of combat, short of wielding a syringe full of penicillin at a soldier with some social disorder or other. Not surprisingly, true combat veterans often find shortcomings in movies about combat and war in general. The story centers on the first contact between American and Vietnamese soldiers in 1965 in the Ia Drang Valley. Taken from the book of the same name, the story is actually authored by Lieutenant General (that’s three stars, kids) Hal Moore and combat journalist Joe Galloway, both of whom experienced the battle first-hand. There are minor variances between the book and the movie, but Hal Moore himself proclaimed the film to be the first war movie “...that got it right”. Platoon. Come on, you had to know that this would be here. It is awfully close to the perfect war movie, after all. One sentence summary: privileged kid suffers existential angst and goes to combat in Vietnam, where he realizes that he didn’t have it so bad after all, others have it much worse, and people can be really shitty in unfamiliar situations. There are many things that I like about this movie, including its fundamental darkness and the anonymous way that it portrays the characters. But I think that my favorite thing about this movie is that it is the first war movie that I ever saw which portrayed marijuana as an element of daily existence. As is always the case, the fundamental difference between platoon members is whether they are drinkers or they are stoners. Obviously, the stoners are portrayed as the good guys; when bad-guy drinker Barnes shoots

good-guy stoner Elias, nobody is really surprised. Remember, this movie was released in the late 80s, when marijuana was not nearly as tolerated by society as it is today. Bravo Two Zero. Maybe you have seen this movie, but more likely you have not. I am here to remedy that. This is the story of a British special operations patrol, the Special Air Service (SAS), and their experiences being behind the Iraqi border during the first Gulf War. Well, perhaps “experiences” isn’t quite the correct word. An eight-man team was sent behind enemy lines prior to the beginning of the war. This is when SCUD missiles (remember those?) were terrorizing everybody and their brother in the Middle East, and this patrol was sent to search for SCUD and determine other ways of just fucking the Iraqis about. Unfortunately, of the eight man team, three were killed, four were captured, and the last guy pretty much hiked across Iraq until he got to Syria and the freedom that it represented. There are four separate versions of this quest, each written by different members of the team. The version that I am working off of is by Andy McNab, who has since proven himself to be quite the prolific writer. While all four versions do not sync completely, the main events are all consistent. British actor Sean Bean played Andy McNabb in the movie, and in my opinion he really captures the soul of being tortured. It was later revealed that the prison where the surviving team members were taken was the notorious Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and the details provided by both the book and the movie are startlingly specific. I never thought that it would be fun to be waterboarded, and having read this, I consider it even less fun than I previously thought. CITY TREES Chocolate Agave Tincture

I was immediately enticed by the idea of a Chocolate Agave Tincture. Would I be able to drizzle this over my ice cream? Mix into my coffee for a soothing morning medicated mocha? Apply with my evening facial mask as an added calming benefit? The possibilities seemed endless and I couldn’t wait to try them all! City Trees has consistently created potent and effective tinctures, and this one is no exception. The texture is similar to a chocolate syrup that you’d add to a cold glass of milk or atop an ice cream sundae (be careful because you will overdo it if you’re not paying attention!) Smooth and easily dissolvable on (or under) the tongue, this tincture is a low glycemic sweetener making it an excellent option for those dealing with diabetes, heart issues, high blood pressure and cholesterol concerns. CBD speaks to inflammation, pain and anxiety issues while THC helps soothe away the day’s blues and stresses with a lightly layered relaxation that comes on subtly and helps with everything from insomnia to depression. And there’s nothing sweeter than a chocolate option that’s both healthy and inspires happiness. Available in three different formulas: 1:1, Pure THC 325mg and Pure THC 750mg

When you’re powering through your day but just want a pick-me-up, a freshy, a little bump, a headchange, or just a quick snap, Gelato is the perfect afternoon treat. TOKIN’ WITH THE INFAMOUS

AARON Eco-Nutrients has been bringing the bounty of the Pacific Ocean to cannabis farms and indoor grow rooms since 1995. When I heard how they helped small growers who were struggling to get through the season, I immediately knew I wanted to spread the

word about this product line. I hit up Aaron Matthess, a partner in the company, and he cruised down to the Humboldt Bay waterfront to tell me about Eco-Nutrients. I dig his passion for all-natural organic growing, his love for the Pacific Northwest, and the respect he

has for his customers. It was a pretty rad scene, watching the boats come into the harbor, knowing they were carrying the raw materials that will create the products that will go on to grow some amazing buds!

Hopper: Thanks so much for talking to Vegas Cannabis Magazine, I’ve really been looking forward to this. I first heard of Eco-Nutrients because of something really cool that you do. You help out small mom and pop growers who are struggling financially by providing them with a full line of nutrients to get through the season. I wish more companies would step up like you have and give back to the community. What made you decide to do that? Aaron: The whole company has that heart. They take whatever extras they have around to our community. They’re not on Instagram, but I saw that people were hashtagging us before there was even an Eco-Nutrients account to follow. That touched me. I was proud of that. I’m just showing love back to them. Hopper: How long has EcoNutrients been around? Aaron: 25 years, and in the past 6 years we’ve developed three new products. The Bloom line, a 4-23-0 dry bone made of wild caught Pacific fish. A 0-7-0 liquid shrimp fertilizer, and the most recent one we released in 2018 is a 2-12-0 liquid bone that’s very high in calcium. The dry bone is actually just a byproduct of making the liquid organic fish. We have to screen it, so we save all those bones and we have a dry product that people can amend soil with.

ECO-NUTRIENTS Hopper: What sets Eco apart from all of the other nutrient companies? Aaron: We’re a small family

business. We’re locally sourced. I don’t know if you want to print this, but we probably supply your favorite fertilizer company, because we’re doing big business supplying tankers of our products to other companies that rebottle us. You can get a tanker of it and put it in bottles and put your own label on it for all we care. What sets us apart? We’re a small team that works hard. Farmers work long days, so to accommodate them we work a longer day. We have a team that’s willing to do that, from young to old. We’re small and tight knit, it’s not some huge production line. I’m super proud of the Pacific Ocean, I’m super proud of the Pacific Northwest. That’s just my heart, I have that pride. We have quality in our ocean compared to the Atlantic, and I believe in that.

Hopper: All of your main ingredients are sourced from the ocean right here in the Pacific Northwest. Will you tell us about those ingredients and how they are beneficial in the garden? Aaron: You can link this back to the last question kind of, because of the way we make it is special. We run at a low temp, doing an organic process. A lot of companies will try to sell you on a no-heat process, but the no-heat process usually involves nasty chemicals. We

preserve 92 minerals from the ocean in the fish and in the kelp. We use some phosphoric acid to preserve it, so it’s just fish stabilized with a little bit of that phosphoric acid.

Hopper: I’m really excited

to use the line this season, I’ve heard nothing but great things about it. I’ve been using Heavy 16 and Cyco lately, but I want to get rid of the salts and go for a more natural approach.

Aaron: It’s something that your grandchildren will appreciate. You’re giving your grandkids a good earth. Strong soil makes a strong plant, so when you have good living soil you can really focus on a more microbial approach to growing. That’s where I’ve seen the farmers killing it. They’re getting more weight, and the terpenes are way stronger. It’s simple- you can reuse your soil because it’s living, whereas you need to throw away soil that you’re putting in things that need to be flushed out. It’s like, what did you put in there if you have to flush it out? If you grow organic it’s keeping it simple and getting a quality product. Hopper: How does Eco work for indoor growing, verses the full season outdoor and light dep applications I’ve seen? Aaron: It depends on your nose, if you can hang with fish indoors. I did it, I make the stuff though. I killed it indoors! If you’re using cleaner, you can do drip lines inside, but you are gonna want to use a cleaner

because organics build up matter, and so you’re getting microbial activity happening. In a bed, that can go off. If you can hang with the smell of the ocean in your room, because it’s not gonna smell like mint. As far as deps and outdoors, they are absolutely killin’ it!

Hopper: I’m glad you brought that up about the smell. I wouldn’t have thought of that, but I’ll deal with a fishy smell to get a superior bud in the end. Aaron: It’s not gonna smell like mint. It’s not some synthetic product like cal-mag that smells like Scope. Why do I know that? I know that because I’ve used that. I’m not knocking it, that’s just what it is. If you’re an indoor farmer brewing a compost tea, or if you’re already accustomed to stinky strains anyway, it’s not gonna be a big deal, you know what I mean? I won’t pussyfoot around, it is a natural product from the ocean. It’s ground up fish, that’s how it becomes liquid. If you want the quality product, tough it out guys!

Hopper: Where can readers find your product? Aaron: Econutrients.com and we’re on Instagram. Hopper: Right on, thanks so much. I really enjoyed this conversation. Do you have any shout outs you want to give before we wrap it up? Aaron: Yeah, shout out to the Pacific Ocean. Shout out to all the farmers using the products, and the ones who will use it in the future. Greenwood for linking us up with you, for sure. The guys I work with. I’ve got a great team- Scott, Dakota, Robert, Jeremy, and Dave. We’re all family. Hopper: Teamwork makes the dream work. Aaron: Absolutely!

Hopper: Do you have plans to

Aaron: We will expand anywhere there’s business, for sure. Being that we’re a small team, we serve the people that call us. That’s really what happens, people see us online and call. Nowadays in the information age, it’s easy. Customers Google ‘fish hydrolysate’, and come to us.

A Day in the Life of GRANNY STORM CROW

BY SHARON lETTS

Keeper of the List of cannabis studies Granny Storm Crow has been compiling a list of studies on cannabis for more than ten years. First published on her 60th birthday in 2007 with 60 pages, the list is currently at 6,000 pages and counting.

Omega-3 deficiencies, due to the use of Omega-6, or fatty acids, in our western diet,’ she explained. “This deficit is not only causing severe illness in many of our biological systems, it’s creating an entire society with mental disorders.”

She initially did this work covertly, taking on the pseudonym to keep a school district job while protecting the jobs of her family members.

The last few sentences from a study found are chilling, stating, “Finally, the dietary-induced reduction of CB(1)R functions in mood-controlling structures was associated with impaired emotional behavior. These findings identify a plausible synaptic substrate for the behavioral alterations caused by the n-3 PUFAs [polyunsaturated fatty acids] deficiency that is often observed in western diets.”

Her journey with cannabis began when she was 19, after suffering migraines since childhood. “When I was three years old, a five year old child tried to kill me with a hammer,” she shared. “I suffered debilitating migraines ever since. When I was 19, I began to smoke cannabis and after about a year realized that when I smoked I didn’t get them at all.” The tedious work of compiling articles, published papers and studies on cannabis has become her life’s work, if only to shut down the mantra, “We need more studies.” “The most glaring findings have been the work done on our

“So, here we have violence and “behavioral alterations,” with Americans walking around with a nutritionally-damaged endocannabinoid system!” she said. “In some studies some folks were found to have a ratio of 50 to one – here’s how that happens: corn oil has an 83 to one ratio, peanut oil is 32 to one – most of our cooking oils are very high in pro-inflammatory Omega-6 and are very low in Omega-3.”

A day in the life…

With years of studies and knowledge under her belt, Granny’s own diet, combined with her cannabis use, helps her maintain optimal health, while keeping migraines at bay. “Daily dosing with an Indica prevents me from having any migraines,” she shared. “Because my migraines are due to head trauma, I’m likely not typical. When I use Sativa I can get shadow migraines – a headache in my migraine pattern of pain, but way milder. I think they are what would have been a killer migraine, but dampened-down- though, not eliminatedby the less effective Sativa.” The nightmares induced by PTSD from the trauma also stopped when she began using cannabis. “The nightmares were getting rare in my teens, but finally vanished about the time I started smoking cannabis,” she added. Granny makes her own cannabis balm, as she’s a hand-quilter and types a great deal.

“My hands have mild arthritis and just a touch of carpal tunnel,” she said. “My balm is as simple as you can get, with hemp seed

oil, olive oil, beeswax and cannabis. Hemp seed oil has the right balance of Omega-3 to Omega-6, for optimal human health. Olive oil is also a source of healthy Omega-9.” She doesn’t “wake & bake,” as she is still taking Armour Thyroid, a natural thyroid supplement, and gives the pill a chance to kickin before medicating with cannabis. “If I smoke too much, too soon, it’s a sleepy high, and I want to be reasonably sharp to read medical studies,” she said. “I do rub my balm in my hands and face first thing in the morning every day. I’m old-fashioned and became accustomed to smoking cannabis as a young hippie – smoking is a habit. I abandoned joints for pipes and bongs long ago, as smoking paper doesn’t make sense – and the pipes are pretty!” She also uses a desk-top vaporizer box, made by Vapor Bros. of California. “I love using the vaporizer for flavorful flower, like Tangie. I have some Orange Bastard – an Agent Orange mixed with something – I can’t recall – growing in my closet right now about ready for harvest. It smells very orangey, and I’m looking forward to vaping it.” Vape pens, on the other hand, aren’t her favorite, as she prefers vaping flower, but when she’s volunteering at her local dispensary on Saturdays, the pen makes it easy to pop out and medicate easily and discreetly. She also loves edibles, with chocolates her favorite, and brownies a common occurrence in the family kitchen. “My mother gifted all three of her kids with a small flaw where the spine and hip join, causing pain,” she shared. “The edibles are just the thing when it hurts – and that’s happening more often as I age. I have a batch of brownies in the kitchen right now!” The List for Life Keeping the list going takes a lot of work, as abstracts become studies, and vice versa, and URLs are constantly changing, and Granny sees no end in sight for the need to update. Her Saturdays are spent at the Green Heart Dispensary near her hometown in Northern California. She sits at a small table in the lobby, with a sign that reads, “Talk to me! I’ll teach you something new about cannabis! “Much of the time I just sit quietly in the corner working on my List,” she explained. “But then, someone who needs information shows up; an elderly couple who heard cannabis might help; a guy who hasn’t used cannabis in decades and is bewildered by all the

Granny, who admits to being one semester short of a psychology degree, said this background helps her when speaking to people. “I’m not a medical professional, I’m an educator,” she said. “Having used cannabis most of my life, I can say it has shaped me in many ways. This plant has led me to a calm and compassionate nature, boosted my creativity, and enabled me to live a fuller, happier life. Many people in education burn out in a few years, but cannabis enabled me to let go of the day’s tensions and worries for nearly two decades at one school.” She finally retired to care for her husband, who passed away last year, but keeps up on the list. “Sometimes after reading four or five studies in a row, the inside of my mind feels like there’s a tornado in there, with facts like bits of debris swirling and smashing against each other – especially when the studies are related. Cannabis calms things down and allows me to connect the facts in new and different ways.” Some people have a spirit animal, but Granny says she has a spirit plant in cannabis for life. “Cannabis has treated me well over the years, and the least I can do to support her is to keep going on this list, keep it up-todate, for the greater good,” she concluded. CBD FOR DEPRESSION Many people have considered using CBD oil for depression. Depression can be a life altering condition that is very difficult to treat. Prescribed medication options are limited, and not always effective. Pharmaceutical drugs can take weeks, usually months, before a patient notices a difference. Many times, a patient will need a combination of drugs because one isn’t enough. Sometimes, patients go through many different kinds before they find something that works. While going through all these drugs, they’re likely to suffer side effects like fatigue, upset stomach, headaches, and the potential for worsening depression or suicidal thoughts. Even after jumping through all of these hoops, over one-third of people with depression are unable to find relief with the current antidepressants on the market.

64

There have been cases of people finding relief through medical marijuana. At first it was attributed solely to THC, however, research shows that CBD has many of the same effects as THC without the psychoactive reactions. Simply stated, CBD oil can still relax you without getting you high. Until recently, cannabis’ effects on depression couldn’t be studied at all due to difficulty in working around federal red tape and scientific research. The idea that CBD oil could be an effective treatment for depression is an exciting thought. For the millions of people in the United States suffering from depression, it could be life changing. An antidepressant that could start helping within an hour, seems like a fantasy. But now, it’s becoming science.

Viva Las Vegan Roll I hope everyone enjoyed last month’s recipe. I remember getting into trouble while at Fin’s at Sharkey’s in Venice, Fl. Making it for my Executive Chef Marc Alton and his wife one Valentine’s Day, minus the infusion. The once known Cupid’s Arrow roll became The Fiery (Shinzo) Heart as a symbol of the love and passion I have for sushi. With winter winding down, I’ve decided to do a vegan inspired roll that is also infused. One that I hope puts a “Spring” in your step! Not to mention, this roll has no seaweed. How do you ask? Well let’s get started and dive into this Viva Las Vegan roll to find out! INGREDIENTS 2 Cups sushi grade short grain rice 1.5 Cup sushi vinegar or CannaBushi infused vinegar 5-10 Drops of Mimosa Terpenes from The Terpene Lab ½ Cup THC or CBD infused coconut oil Black beans (cooked) Roasted red peppers Avocado Cilantro Sriracha Turmeric Garlic Sea Salt MAKING THE SUSHI RICE 1. Start by washing the rice in a bowl with a strainer. Gently use cold water to rinse or “polish” the rice. The water will turn into a cloudy white as the starches are being removed. Continue until the water clears up but try not to wash a lot. Make sure to remove dirty water and drain the rice each time you wash. No more than four times. 2. After draining rice, make sure the water is out of the strainer and place it into a rice cooker. Add equal parts water to each cup of rice. Cook as directed per your device. Take cooked rice and place it into a large bowl. Cover and grab your infused CannaBushi vinegar. 3. Take your infused CannaBushi vinegar and add 5 drops of

72

BY Chris Rodarte

Mimosa Terpenes. Let rest for 3 minutes so the terpenes may bloom. It should add a wonderful, vibrant, and citrus botanical. You may have to add a couple more drops. *Exercise caution because less is more with terpenes. Thank you to Katia at The Terpene Lab, where I’m given the opportunity to hone and develop this terpene/culinary/infusion science. Even more thankful to have the pleasure of sharing it all with you, the reader and fellow “mad scientists.” 4. Place enough vinegar to start coating/cutting the rice. Mix well. Make sure not to overdo it. While it is hot, mix your infused vinegar into the bowl of rice, mixing so that the vinegar is completely covering the rice. Not drowning in it. Just enough. It’s easy to overdo it. Cover and keep to the side, making sure to mix the rice again in 5 minutes.

INFUSED BLACK BEAN PATE AND RED PEPPERS 1. Start by placing your beans into a bowl. Add 1 tsp of sea salt, turmeric, and garlic. Drizzle a little infused coconut oil onto everything and begin to mix the ingredients. Use the back of the spoon to smash and incorporate the ingredients to a pate like consistency. You want to keep adding tiny amounts of coconut oil, turmeric and garlic until you reach the desired taste. One that is savory and satisfying to the tongue. Cover and place in the fridge until chilled. Save for later. 2. Now that the beans are made, we can focus on the infused red peppers. I recommend that these are made the previous day. As with anything the flavors will marry and become more pronounced over time. 3. The number of rolls you are making will determine how many red peppers you will need. Keep this in mind when preparing. Place the pepper(s) over an open flame and cook until the skin has become charred. Remove from heat and carefully pull the skin off of the cooked pepper(s). 4. Pull the seed pod out of the pepper(s) and begin to slice them into strips, placing them into a container with infused coconut oil. You want them fully emerged into the oil as they will homogenize with the THC or CBD. Place in the fridge and remember that they will become more infused as they are allowed to marinate. *A vacuum sealer is optimal if you have one handy, both for the vegetables and the oil leftover. MAKING THE VIVA LAS VEGAN ROLL 1. Place your makisu onto the cutting board and get a piece of saran wrap the same size or a little bigger. Cover the makisu to prepare for the next step. 2. Grab your mimosa infused sushi rice and make sure to have a small bowl of water ready so you can handle the rice. 3. Start by dipping your hand in the water and rub your hands together so there's a slight amount of water lightly on each. Grab a small ball of rice and spread evenly on the saran wrap. Make sure the rice has cooled and just has a slight warmth. It should be a lot stickier now. 4. Create a “pad” of sorts in the size and shape of where the rice would normally be on the nori/seaweed and it should be evenly distributed to a ¼ inch thickness. It’s ok if it’s a little bigger than normal. As long as you can still encapsulate the ingredients.

5. Speaking of, take 2-3 oz. of your Black Bean Pate and create a“log”, keeping it somewhat in the center of the rice pad and travelling from end to end. 6. With the pate in place you can put slices of avocados and your infused red peppers beside it. 7. Pull the “no nori” rice sheet to the end of the makisu while still on the saran wrap and use your thumb to grab the makisu. Begin to bring it up and over to encapsulate the ingredients. 8. Make sure you have created a seal and have the seam on the cutting board. Take your hands and gently squeeze the roll so that it is shaped. Keep the saran wrap underneath the roll, so when you cut it is easier to remove. Scoot the makisu to each side and gently press the ends so the ingredients are inside the roll. Cut into 8 equal pieces, remove saran wrap and place onto a plate.

9. Take some leaves of cilantro and put one leaf on each piece. Adding a sprinkle of turmeric powder, then a dot of Sriracha. Voila! Your first “No Nori” vegan sushi roll, plus it is infused! Not to mention a healthy alternative in the world of CannaBushi. Remember the leftover oil from the peppers? Keep it and use it for a roasted red pepper infused oil to cook with. Maybe an additive to create a nice infused vinaigrette or some extra flavor to your favorite homemade spaghetti sauce. Oh, the possibilities! I hope you all enjoyed making this recipe as much as I did creating it for you! Reach out if you have any questions! Check out my website at www.cannabushi.com.

Winds of Change - I was recently at a gathering of "human beings" from every region on earth. All joining together to embrace the coming holiday, St Patrick's day. As we passed around the "Irish Green" someone suggested, as a tribute to whiskey each one contributes a whiskey from

his or her homeland. It is so true, there are more things that bring us together than keep us apart. As the tide rolls not only will we evolve as Americans, but more importantly into human beings. I spent one summer working with a man doing construction. At the end of each day he would hand me

a beer, then he lit up one from his personal stash "Soulman17." You see, he sported size 17 sandals. He would tell me about growing up in Africa, and his journey to get here. So pour yourself a tasty beverage, light up your first class ticket on Indica Airlines and listen to the soulman, "Eyes of Accra." Spring childhood is put on pause, like outdoor play during a thought storm. Sleep induces dreams, dreams enable flight, flight always leads back to the same shores, to a land of opportunity. Summer feet slap dust, as they run past friends whose thoughts are of fun, frolic, and youth. Fall hands hungry for work, found comfort in shovel, hammer and saw. Adept fingers left a thirsty mind free to sour the endless big sky of imagination. Winter fingers happy to save every copper coin, every silver token. Eyes of Accra! Seeing with tunnel vision daydreams. Envision only one thing in the misty clouds of frozen breath. America!

Blue Dream Canna-Olive Oil & Dehydrated “Salad” paired with Big Dogs Peace Love and Hoppiness INGREDIENTS 1C. Ground flower 1C. Olive oil

(Chef’s note: The quality of oil is always mentioned by most professionals for good reason. Best thing to do is taste. If you have a chance to do an olive oil tasting anywhere it will be enlightening, or you can do it yourself at home by buying two different types, cheap and pricier and see the difference.)

PROCESS Cook olive oil and flower together at low temperature (not exceeding 245’ F.) Three hours later, strain it with cheesecloth and you have cann-oil! We dehydrated grapefruit (From our local “milk man”), fennel, & red onion in the oven @ 150’ F overnight then added smoked blue cheese & arugula (from our local “herbs by Diane” grower in boulder city), finish with vinegar powder & canna-oil.
