Yorkshire YATTER

Feeling that festive hangover? Lisa Byrne points out that our county ancestors had it much worse

O

h, how I absolutely adore Christmas. Watching children gaze mesmerised by the twinkling lights, smelling spiced incense at Midnight Mass, sipping warming mugs of mulled wine at festive markets However, I certainly don’t relish the negative aspects… Gargantuan materialism, hearing the dulcet tones of Mariah Carey screeching out from every store and the TV repeats! But by far the worst of all is the near-death experience of suffering a heinous hangover from epic overindulgence. We may like to think that in the olden days, the festive period was much more sedate and civilised. But I can tell you, our ancestors were just as raucous and up for mischief and mayhem as we are today. The Winter Solstice has been celebrated for centuries in our county, but it was the Romans who first brought serious celebrations to Yorkshire. Kicking off YORK AT CHRISTMAS

from 17 December across their major settlements, these pre-Christian conquerors would celebrate Saturnalia – a week of pure overindulgence to honour the Roman God Saturn. Wine was knocked back accompanied by a host of delicious treats, most exquisite being trays of fattened dormice resting in fermented fish sauce! Then those vicious Vikings invaded, eschewing wine and rodents, for mead, boiled meats, and cabbage – as they celebrated Yule (the Winter solstice of 21 December), by gathering Christmas logs from the Yorkshire Forest of Galtres, to light a blaze – believing that every spark would bring more livestock for the settlers. But once the rise of Christianity hurled hammer wielding Thor into Valhalla, the county started Christmas traditions that we recognise today. In the 1400s, the custom of tolling The Devil’s Knell first began in Dewsbury, and ever since (bar the Second World War), church tenor bells have rung out on Christmas Eve, a peal for every year since the birth of Christ. Over in York during the Middle Ages and Tudor period, figures known as Yule and Yule’s wife appeared on St Thomas’s Day (21 December), who rode through the streets carrying a leg of lamb, cake and nuts which were thrown to the gathering crowd. City sheriffs welcomed ‘thieves, dice-players and all other unthrifty folk’ to the city for a period of 12 days. So, the next time you’re feeling groggy from the adverse effects of overindulgence, it could be worse, at least you’re not green around the gills from devouring fish fermented dormice...

Water WORLD Music recorded in Sheffield that will soothe your soul this Christmas

Birmingham Record Company have announced the release of A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time, a new album from composer Benjamin Tassie. Recorded and filmed in the historic Rivelin Valley in Sheffield, the album features three new waterpowered musical instruments that Benjamin designed and built together with the instrument maker Sam Underwood. The delicate recordings on this beautiful album combine music produced by these instruments with the sounds of the environment and live performance to engage poetically with ideas of place, heritage, and our changing relationship with nature.

The Rivelin Valley was once a thriving hub of water-powered industry. Today, the ruins of 20 watermills and 21 mill dams can be found along the river’s length – ghosts of Sheffield’s industrial past. Now a haven for wildlife, the weirs, dams, and goits that channelled the water still remain – look into the river, or along its banks, and you will see millstones, the remnants of machinery, fragments of wall. A Ladder is Not the Only Kind of Time was made in dialogue with this evocative landscape. birminghamrecordcompany. wordpress.com

Past &

Present

Look North’s Amy Garcia reflects on a decade of presenting the show, her highs and lows and what Christmas holds in store for her By LISA BYRNE

W

ith her naturally warm approach to interviews and glamorous looks, Amy Garcia is one of the most recognisable faces in Yorkshire, having presented BBC’s Look North for over a decade. During that period there’ve been many highs such as interviewing huge stars and taking part in charity challenges, and lows, including having to inform viewers about the sudden sad loss of her much-loved colleague, Harry Gration. Born in Wakefield, Amy is a proud Yorkshire girl through and through and commands the helm of one of the UK’s biggest regional news programmes with ease. Speaking exclusively to Absolutely Yorkshire for this special Christmas edition, Amy takes a break from being a TV anchor to tell readers about her special plans for the festive season with her husband Tim and children, Mabel, and Ren.

Q What are your plans for celebrating the festival season this December? A I love the build up to Christmas, so I like to cram a lot into December! Ice skating, panto, a Christmas singalong, visiting a decorated stately home, nativity, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day with family. And then we all fall into a shattered heap! Q Do you have any family traditions? A Yes, there’s a few. Firstly, choosing a tree

from the local Christmas tree farm in York – the children take it very seriously and have different opinions on the perfect tree! When I left home my mum started to buy me and my sister a decoration for the tree wherever we were at the time, usually with a special theme or connection. I’ve kept them all and added over the years, ranging from a handmade decoration when I visited Kenya as a teenager to a velvet guard from Buckingham Palace. I love decorating the tree with the children and telling them about each one. My favourites are crystal snowflakes engraved with the year of their first Christmas and baubles with their tiny footprints on. My husband is a musician, so a Christmas singalong around the piano is a must, as is ice skating at Somerset House in London. My husband and I met in London 20 years ago, it was a time when my sister and brother lived there too so we’d all go to Somerset House ice skating. My brother now has a restaurant rink-side in the winter, so we like to take the kids to skate and eat cheese fondue. Q You’ve lived in York for many years now, do you manage to spend time in the city over Christmas? A I love attending a service at York Minster, anytime of year is beautiful, but at Christmas it’s so magical especially with the choir. We have visited a couple of carol services over the years followed by mulled wine at the Christmas market.

Q It’s your ten-year anniversary of presenting Look North, one of the most watched regional news programs in the country. How do you feel about reaching such a milestone? A Amazed that they’ve kept me this long! A decade feels like such a milestone and it’s a huge privilege to be in people’s living rooms every night sharing their stories and meeting remarkable people from across our region. Behind every presenter is a talented team and I work with the best at Look North – many have been here since my first day, so we’ve been through the big stories, life changes and babies together. But I couldn’t do this job without an incredibly supportive husband and grandparents, I am so lucky. Q What’s been your most memorable moment on TV? A Disney channel is where I learnt about live TV and interviewed the big pop bands at the time from Blue to S Club 7 and Busted. It’s also where I met some of my best friends. I’ve had some wonderful experiences at Look North and met the most amazing people along the way. So much has happened in 10 years – three general elections, a pandemic, death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the Coronation of King Charles III. It’s amazing to have been part of such historical moments with our viewers. When I was working with my parents on Wakefield market as a teenager, I never dreamed I’d be allowed A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

into Downing Street to interview the PM. Stand out moments would have to be the challenges with Harry – from a 250-mile tandem bike ride to pushing the red sofa around Yorkshire, wing walking, abseiling, caving under the Yorkshire Dales. We always had such a giggle. The main highlight was meeting our viewers on the challenges, they came out in their hundreds to line the streets and support us even in horrendous weather. On the sofa challenge Paul, Harry and I were struggling to get it through the snow at the top of Stanage Edge, when suddenly a group of viewers who’d been following our progress on the programme appeared from nowhere and helped us lift it over big boulders. It’s also been fun having a few TV presenter cameos too – I was in the first series of Happy Valley and loved seeing how drama worked behind the scenes.

DAVID HAREWOOD IS A FAVOURITE INTERVIEWEE

20

Q Who’s been your favourite celebrity guest? A I’ve lost count of who I have interviewed over the years, but I’d say actor David Harewood is up there, James Norton at the premiere of the third series of Happy Valley as well as singing into a hairbrush in the dressing room with Rick Astley, and sharing my Kylie and Jason vinyl collection with Jason Donovan! Q The sudden death of your former colleague Harry Gration really shocked the county. How have you coped with his loss? A Harry was my mentor and friend – he was the heart of Look North for nearly three decades, so his loss was huge for the whole team. Breaking the news of his death to his loyal viewers is the most difficult broadcast I’ve ever done – I was given the option to go home that day, but I felt it was my duty as his co-host and friend. I was taught by the best and I know he would have done the same for me. In my head I could hear him saying, ‘get on with it lass and we’ll have a stiff drink afterwards’. The hundreds of tributes and messages were overwhelming. Harry always said it was an honour to be in people’s living rooms every night, and clearly the feeling was mutual. The way he connected with the audience was unique. He really was one of a kind. Q Yorkshire is full of iconic, famous people. Do you have a favourite? A Dame Judi is a legend isn’t she – I’d love to share an afternoon tea with her at Betty’s in York. Michael Parkinson was the most amazing broadcaster – the way he interviewed people was a masterclass for any presenter.

AMY LOVES CHRISTMAS

Q If you have a spare day to roam the county over the festive season, where would you visit? A Castle Howard for the Christmas house and run down the hill to the adventure playground. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is always lovely for a crisp winter walk. Q And where’s your favourite place for Sunday lunch? A If it’s a fancy occasion, then the Alice Hawthorne in Nun Monkton, or a big family roast at home. The weeks are crazy with work and kids’ clubs so on a Sunday being able to regroup, have lunch and play board games is perfect. Q What would you love Santa to bring you? A It sounds a cliché, but I’ve got everything I want. I’m over expensive gifts – I know this year will be really hard for many families across Yorkshire, so I just want to wish them all a happy and healthy Christmas and year ahead.

THE PIECE HALL AT CHRISTMAS

Q When was the first time you

visited The Piece Hall?

A I hosted an event at the Square Chapel

Arts Centre, which adjoins The Piece Hall, and was immediately blown away by its size, architecture, beauty and charm.

Q As a music venue, what

makes it so special?

A It’s an absolutely perfect setting for

concerts. It can accommodate a huge festival stage, looks spectacular and, despite its size, somehow feels intimate – especially considering the magnitude of artists who have played there.

Q Live at The Piece Hall over the summer

GET TO KNOW…

CHRIS HAWKINS BBC RADIO 6 MUSIC PRESENTER AND N E W PAT R O N O F T H E P I E C E H A L L

hosted several amazing artists. What was the experience like behind the scenes? A In a word: incredible. There was such a buzz all summer. Every single act fell in love with the venue. I got to interview them before they performed. It was extraordinary being backstage with the likes of Sting, Rag’n’Bone Man, Queens of the Stone Age, Madness, War on Drugs, Boygenius and Johnny Marr. Without fail, all of them talked about what amazing things they’d heard about the venue and that it was even more impressive than they expected. Q How does it feel to be asked to be a patron? A An honour. It came as a real surprise.

Ever since my first visit I’ve shouted about it being one of the best venues in the country. Nicky Chance-Thompson and her fantastic team have created a very special destination that deserves international recognition and I feel privileged to now be a small part of its future success. Q What will the role see you do? A The aim is to help shine a spotlight on

The Piece Hall as a one-of-a-kind heritage site, increasing awareness of its work and shouting about it to anyone who’ll listen. Q Are there other spots in Yorkshire that are great for music? A Yes, loads! Halifax has great grassroots venues and, going forward, thanks to The Piece Hall with promoters Cuffe and Taylor, they will be supported through Music Venue Trust’s Pipeline Investment Fund. There’s been a remarkably rich seam of new bands emerging from the Calder Valley in recent years, like Wax Tree Cast, Working Men’s Club and Lounge Society. Across Yorkshire there are brilliant venues in Leeds like Brudenell, The Cockpit and Hyde Park Book Club; Smile in Huddersfield; The Welly in Hull; The Trades in Hebden Bridge; The Fulford Arms in York; and Sheffield’s Leadmill – to name but a tiny few. Q Music aside, where else in Yorkshire do you like visiting? A I love Sheffield – especially the eclectic shops and bars around Devonshire Green. Leeds is always a great night out, too.

24

Q What do you love about doing your BBC 6 Music show? A It’s my dream job. I get to play the very best music to the very best radio listeners in the world. It’s a privilege to be a part of people’s morning routine, hopefully starting their day in a positive way with some fun along the way. Q What kind of music are

you keen to push? A I play a mix of old and new stuff, across all genres. Playing brand new music on the radio is always exciting, but it’s equally rewarding when listeners discover an established act for the first time.

A The 6 Music Festival now has a permanent home in Greater Manchester and Salford and starts each year with a bang. I’m going to be hosting and DJing at festivals through the summer, including Kendal Calling and Camp Bestival, and summer 2024 at The Piece Hall will be off the scale.

Q Are there any new bands we need to keep an ear out for? A It’s a great time for new music. Postpandemic, so many great acts have been breaking through. There’s so much I’m loving like Boygenius, The Last Dinner Party, CMAT, Alex Spencer, Sofia Kourtesis, Barry Can’t Swim, Seb Lowe, Hak Baker… and so many more! TIMES Where to experience the joys of Christmas in Yorkshire… B y H O L LY P H I L L I P S

Y

orkshire is a magical place at Christmas. The twinkling lights, the frostcovered landscapes and the joyous local spirit will no doubt make you feel merry. Here’s how a few of Yorkshire’s most-loved cities and towns get into the festive spirit.

YORK

It would be wrong to start without mentioning possibly the most festive place in Yorkshire. York is a city that truly captures the magical essence of Christmas. York Christmas Market is one of Yorkshire’s biggest festive attractions. After celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, the market is due to run this year from 16 November-22 December. It’s a great place to soak up the festive atmosphere. As well as York Christmas Market, another huge event that you won’t want to

26

miss is Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland. It’s hosted at York Designer Outlet, and there you’ll find an Alpine-style cafe, a vintage funfair and an outdoor ice rink. It’s also a great place to do your Christmas shopping. Adding to the festive spirit, St Olave’s Church holds candlelight concerts where you can enjoy enchanting harmonies and the string quartet, all whilst being in the most serene environment. Singer-songwriter and musician, Alistair Griffin, is also hosting a ‘Big Christmas Concert’, featuring traditional Christmas songs from the likes of Wizzard and Slade. If you’re up for a laugh, York Barbican is hosting a Laugh Out Loud Christmas Comedy Club on 8 December at 6pm. Of course, York also has a panto: this year, the ugly step sisters will take to the stage for Cinderella. The Barbican is also showing Love Actually in concert, as well as The Muppet Christmas Carol. You can also indulge in a Christmas chocolate masterclass. During this unique experience,

DONCASTER The newly-established city is an underdog when it comes to Christmas time. Nevertheless, it has a host of festive activities that’ll help you feel the magic of Christmas, and that’s mostly thanks to one of Doncaster’s biggest attractions, Yorkshire Wildlife Park. For select dates throughout the winter period, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is hosting a Winter Illuminations Light and Lantern Festival. It’s back and bigger than ever before, making it the perfect activity for a festive family day out. Hot drinks and food will be available around the park. You’ll be able to find treats at the Leopard’s Donut

Den, the Hyena Trailer, or the Camel Trailer. It’s the perfect place to wrap up warm and experience the magic of the park in the dark as 2.5km of lights light up the way for you. The Wildlife Park also hosts a Christmas Fair at the Yorkshire Hive throughout December. It’s a great place to find the perfect Christmas presents, with over 30 traditional wooden chalets filled with festive treats and gifts. Mulled wine, indulgent crepes and German bratwurst will be in full swing too. If you’d like to make the trip

extra special for children, they can enjoy a morning feast at the Evolution cafe with Santa, where each child will receive a personal table visit and a small gift from Santa. Doncaster racecourse also isn’t shy about getting into the festive spirit. Christmas Live is back and this year they present Dance The Decades with a party night taking you back to the 60s, 70s and 80s. If more recent music is your thing, then don’t fear, because Doncaster Dome is hosting a Christmas noughties party. The racecourse also hosts a Christmas jumper race day on 10-11 December. Speaking of family fun, Aladdin takes to the stage for this year’s panto at CAST. More Disney characters also A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

appear at Bawtry’s Christmas event on 5 December as princesses will be wandering around. There will also be funfair rides, live music, and craft and gift stalls. If the children are keen to see Santa, his sleigh lands in Lakeside Village on 4 December. Better yet, you’ll be able to see hundreds of Santas dash through the snow at the Doncaster Santa Dash at Sandall Park on 11 December. Doncaster has a host of festive charity events throughout December, like the Doncaster Minster Charity Christmas Concert and the Dive-In Community Carol Service in the Salvation Army’s car park.

SHEFFIELD Sheffield is another city that perfectly captures the essence of Christmas. Meadowhall, one of Yorkshire’s biggest shopping centres, is the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping. The shopping centre also hosts a

Christmas Chronicle event, which is a magical adventure where you’ll meet many Christmas characters, as well as getting to hop on the Santa Express to meet Santa in his workshop. Sheffield also has a Christmas Market in the city centre that runs from 16 November-24 December. The market celebrates Sheffield’s inspirational independent trading scene and features an array of seasonal cuisines and gifts. The iconic big wheel is also making a return, as well as Santa’s Grotto. Leona Lewis stops by Sheffield City Hall on her Christmas In Love tour on 6 December. The Grammy and Brit Award nominee will host an evening of Christmas classics, including her own greatest hits, like One More Sleep. Speaking of music, The Brunch Club are hosting an ABBA Christmas party on 9 December and are inviting all ABBA superfans to get ready for a very ABBA Christmas. There will be live singers and four hours of ABBA disco tunes. Fancy dress is heavily encouraged, with the brunch hotspot recommending disco Santa vibes. SEE LEONA LEWIS IN SHEFFIELD

If you’re looking for a festive event that is more composed, there are a range of Christmas wreath making workshops around Sheffield. Debra J Flowers is hosting one at the Quays Hotel, or there is a workshop at Lottie’s Coffee Lounge, both on 9 December.

RIPON Despite being one of Yorkshire’s smaller cities, Ripon goes big at Christmas time. It’s a city steeped with history and is a truly magical place to spend the Christmas period. The Cathedral itself is wonderful, but with the added essence of Christmas, it makes for a magical experience. The Cathedral hosts many events throughout December, including an Advent Procession and Carol Service, a Nativity Exhibition and a Christmas Carol Concert, featuring the Ripon Cathedral Choir and St Cecilia Orchestra. Ripon Spa Gardens turns into an Illuminated Christmas Wonderland, where you’ll be able to enjoy dazzling lights, decorations and see Santa on his sleigh. Adding to the family fun, you could take a Winter Warmer cruise along the canal where you can enjoy mulled wine or a hot chocolate. You can even cruise to the city centre where you can take a look around the giant snow globe in the city centre. Ripon is also not far from Harrogate, which has a whole host of Christmas events itself, including The Great Yorkshire Christmas Fair, Harrogate Christmas Concert and a Dashing Dachshund Christmas Tour. Have a very merry Yorkshire Christmas! A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Full of FLAVOUR

An eclectic menu supporting many of the county’s producers - it’s little wonder that Neil Bentinck’s Skosh in York is winning over all comers

Y

ork’s food scene is flourishing. There is so much choice these days, with chefs rated highly by the Michelin Guide and restaurants located in beautiful, historic buildings. If you put all those ingredients into a pot and gave it a stir, you’d come up with Skosh. Since 2016, this has been a firm favourite of ours. A glance at the menu not only gets the juices flowing, but truly excites with its innovative approach to combining flavours: a most recent visit included such gems as cauliflower manchurian, ‘xianjing’ lamb & mushroom dumplings, squash mochi with pistachio dukkah, kale & black truffle, BBQ pork belly satay with carrot ajat, and 72% kayambe chocolate mousse with tamarind & sesame.

You’d think the man behind these concoctions is some kind of northern Heston Blumenthal, working in his experimental kitchen, far too busy to sit down and chat. Well, he is busy, but he’s only too happy to chat to Absolutely – and it’s a joy to report he’s very down to earth. And he even gives a little hope that rubbish cooks like yours truly may one day pick up some inkling of talent. “I don’t really remember,” Neil Bentinck laughs when asked if he loved to cook as a youngster. “I certainly was present when my mum and gran were cooking, but it wasn’t a fairytale ‘I was baking bread when I was three’ type of relationship! My father was from India, so I was surrounded by exciting food from a young age, which certainly carved a sub-conscious relationship with a different kind of cuisine. “I studied business at York College, then got a place at uni to do studio-music management, but decided to take a gap year to earn money,” he continues about how his career evolved. ““That’s when I got the bug for the hospitality industry, firstly working as a waiter in a hotel, but then fell in love with the food/kitchen side of things. After a stint working in a bank (evenings/weekends off appealed as a young man – but I found it a bit monotonous), I then headed to Australia and worked over there as a chef. The food scene was so exciting there which inspired me, so upon my return home I decided that’s the proper career for me. I then got an apprenticeship at a local pub called Ye Olde Sun Inn at Colton.” So began a lengthy list of jobs, all of which added a little to the vital experience that Neil was building up. “Stand outs are BBQing in Australia at racecourse events, working with James at Pipe and Glass, Lisa at Northcote, and Stephen and Andrew at Star Inn – all of those people are so hard working and talented. Lots of respect for them,” he says about some of those roles.

“I wanted a good value offering with playful but precise cookery in a relaxed environment”

A stint in Harrogate, however, proved to be the one that convinced him to go it alone. “I knew I wanted my own establishment and after being head chef at a fine dining restaurant called Van Zeller in Harrogate it was time to go it alone,” he says. “I said I wanted to do it to my wife and she replied ‘you’ve been talking about it for ages – let’s just go for it, you’ll regret it forever if you don’t’ so we did… It was great timing for our style of restaurant within the industry, but don’t get me wrong, having two kids in the first few years of trading added to the pressure! But we chefs thrive on pressure.” Why was Micklegate the perfect spot? “To be honest the rent played a part in the business location. It’s lower as you head a bit out of the city centre. That being said I’ve always loved it – from doing the Micklegate run of pubs when I was younger to the history of the bar and the city wall being a stone’s throw away.” He describes the food offering as “eclectic” from day one, something we wholeheartedly agree with. “A good value offering with playful but precise cookery in a relaxed environment,” he adds. “The service and atmosphere being equally important to the food to give the complete dining experience. I think we’ve achieved it – and more importantly we stick to it.” Neil says the menu is produce-led, “then it’s what route I choose to go seasoning wise

46

really”. On the current menu, are there dishes he really loves right now? “Our salt ‘n’ pepper squid fritters with basil and lime are very tasty,” he smiles. “We bind fresh day boat squid with a fish mousse then tempura fry and season with salt ‘n’ pepper style seasoning – recognisable flavours, but lighter and certainly not just chewy calamari. Also our partridge – spiced up Indian style. We roast the bird on the crown with a house masala blend and confit the legs. We serve it with a spiced sauce made from the bones, some hispi cabbage, green chilli, coconut and curry leaf and also a spiced beetroot ketchup – lots of flavour!” Neil is keen to name-check the local producers who help bring everything together. “Ben at Rocket & Russet, Joe at Food Circle, Simon Baynes is a local wholesaler along

with Fowlers for fish in York and Hodgson of Hartlepool are great too,” he says. “R n J in Ripon and my friend’s butchers in Woodthorpe, Richardsons, are who we use for meat.” With Christmas upon us, rather than a special festive menu, there is something else close to Neil’s heart that takes centre stage. “We always do our festive Skosh chocolate bauble in December – with half the takings going to charity. Myeloma UK is the charity of choice and has been since day one. My father passed away from myeloma – a rare form of blood cancer – several years ago and I’ve always wanted to help if possible,” he explains. “I’m no marathon runner for charity fundraising, so this is how I do my bit.” He describes how he’s looking forward to some time off over Christmas and early in the new year to be with his family – before something big heads his way. “We are expanding into next door soon,” Neil says. “It allows the kitchen to grow a bit so we have more room to perfect the cuisine, a proper bar for the front of house team, and also more room and flexible areas for customers. “Really, though, my hopes are simple,” he adds, “and still the same as when we opened in 2016 – great food and drink, happy customers and staff, and a relaxed environment in which to enjoy it. Long may it continue.” skoshyork.co.uk

Love Islander and Doncaster native Molly Marsh on launching a collection alongside Say It With Diamonds Q How long have you been aware of Say It With Diamonds? A I love my jewellery, so I knew of Say It With Diamonds as I bought the nomination charms from them beforehand and then discovered how big their own range of jewellery was. When they reached out I was really excited. Q What would you say your jewellery style is? A I’d say I’m not afraid of jewellery, I feel like you can layer a lot of jewellery on top of each other, and wear both gold and silver. I love statement earrings and necklaces, it makes you look and feel more put together. Plus, versatile jewellery that can be worn from day to night, worn alone, stacked together or added to a casual outfit to really elevate a look, so I wanted the jewellery to be in gold and silver with interchangeable styles so that it can be worn by everyone. Q Why were you keen to collaborate with Say It With Diamonds? A I was keen to work with them because I had massive love and support from all the jewellery that I wore in the villa – the girls were saying, “Oh my goodness your jewellery bag is huge”. I’ve always loved jewellery – even when I was young, me and my sister used to make necklaces and create bracelets. This is my first collaboration with a brand, when I left the villa I was really conscious about the brands I wanted to work with and took my

villa, I made sure I requested Yorkshire tea bags! I live on a farm in South Yorkshire and have lived in Yorkshire my whole life. I live in the city, but I’m a country girl at heart. Q Do you have plans for the festive period? A Christmas is my favourite time of the

year so lots of festive plans like Christmas markets, baking, movie marathons, decorating, potentially watching a panto and lots of Christmas YouTube content.

Q Describe your perfect Christmas Day… A Wake up beside my little sister,

put the kettle on, still in my cosy Christmas PJs and slippers. Open our stockings, give mum and dad their gifts and pray Santa has been and left some goodies in the living room – myself and Maisie still keep the magic alive in our household even at the ages of 15 and 22! Then, have a huge family Christmas dinner with Yorkshire puddings of course and play board games all day until everyone falls asleep. sayitwithdiamonds.com/collections/ luxury-kiss-collection

time. Working with Say It With Diamonds was a no-brainer, I love that they are Northern and a really down-to-earth brand, plus they’re affordable and highquality. I’m really proud of this collection. Q How did you come up with the

ideas for the Kiss Collection? A I loved the kiss-shaped X designs, and after leaving the Love Island villa I thought it really encapsulated the essence of love and elegance. It was all a very collaborative decision so they would send over things I thought would suit me, I would say yes and no, and I would send over things that I like to wear, then they’d just find the right thing for me. Q What pieces will we find in the collection? A The range includes classic bracelets, necklaces, rings and delicate stud earrings. I love that they would look great on the red carpet or on a more casual look and worn as stunning separates or perfectly

paired together – the stack bracelets are my personal favourite too. I also love the Dainty Luck Necklace in silver, it also has a matching bracelet. Q How has life been since you starred in Love Island? A Coming out of the villa, Zach [Noble] and I knew we were going to face difficulties, alongside very high highs and low lows. But if you’re in love with someone, it’s all about sticking by them, holding a hand and being like, 'We got this no matter what', and I feel like that’s the key to it. Q How do you look back on your time in the show? A It’s been an incredible rollercoaster from the beginning until now and I’m just taking everything as it comes. I’m being really selective about who I’m working with. Q Are you South Yorkshire born and bred? A Yes! I love a Yorkshire cuppa – even in the A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

ricks and clicks company Jules B is at the heart of Northern England’s luxury fashion market, stocking a handpicked selection of household names and niche brands. For many, it’s the place to discover unique clothing and new names, both online and in-store. And while Jules B is a favourite stockist for premium fashion labels, it also boasts its own brand. Enter Eddy & Ivy – the company’s in-house creation and one of Jules B’s most sought-after knitwear collections. Eddy & Ivy is the brainchild of Rhona Blades, one of the company’s co-owners alongside husband Julian Blades. Rhona, a Newcastle University fashion graduate and later fashion lecturer at the Newcastle College of Arts and Technology (known today as Newcastle College), recognised a gap in the market for cashmere knitwear at a fair price. It was through her quest to discover a balance between quality and cost that she discovered expert craftsmen here in the UK. With a dedicated team of artisans who love what they do, Eddy & Ivy was born, named after her parents. Rhona is very supportive of the mills in Scotland, where the quality is exceptional and the craftsmanship second to none. Jules B has a long association with some of the oldest knitwear manufacturers in Hawick, the largest of the Scottish Border towns and often considered the home of cashmere. It is here that Rhona sources the highestgrade merino wool and cashmere for the collections, with each garment handmade

on looms that have been creating luxury knitwear for over a hundred years. Cashmere knitwear is known for its luxurious qualities, and the result at Eddy & Ivy is sumptuous sweaters and hoodies with incredible softness and warmth. The knits come in a colourful selection with slogans broadcast across the chest, such as Love, Rock and 1985 – a nod to the year Jules B arrived. These are statement knits that speak loud, but pair effortlessly with everything from satin skirts to everyday denim. The collection also includes a handful of cosy winter accessories, with chunky ribknit beanies made to counter the cold. The Eddy & Ivy AW23 collection is available to shop online and in-store at Jules B. Scan the code or visit julesb.co.uk to discover more

brands in the world. We have always had to evolve to remain in business, but I think the fundamental foundations of the company being an approachable and trustworthy business have always remained from the beginning.

Q What can you tell us about the

origins of Lister Horsfall? A The business was started in the centre of Halifax in 1902 by my great grandfather Lister Horsfall. Lister was from a Halifax family and his father came to be his first customer on the first day of the jewellery shop opening. Q What kind of thing did Lister Horsfall

specialise in back in those early days? A The shop was locally nicknamed the little diamond shop and specialised in only the finest pieces, which the company has always been known for ever since.

Q Why did the business open in Ilkley? A My father saw the potential in Ilkley and

We have been able to buy some adjacent buildings, which we have demolished and are rebuilding a brand new showroom to provide us with a much larger space with dedicated spaces for our brands. at the forefront of leading jewellers. We aim to provide a service and experience to our clients and we are always thinking about how we can do that, whether it’s new showrooms, events or our relationship with our brands. The high street is constantly changing and faces some challenges, but I hope that people will always want an experience of buying a special piece in a wonderful showroom with a warm and approachable service – and this is what we will continue to do.

Botox

Dermal filler

Botox is an anti-wrinkle treatment that works by blocking impulses to tiny facial muscles, thereby reducing the prominence of expression lines and achieving a more youthful, radiant look. You may lose tone and natural elasticity of the skin as you age, causing wrinkles, fine lines, and folds to appear.

Injectable Hyaluronic acid based dermal fillers can restore, revolumise and rejuvenate these facial lines and augment the appearance of the face – safely and effectively offering a refreshed appearance and look.

Envy facial

The best thing you can do to get your skin ready the week of your party events, we recommend booking yourself in for an Envy facial to give you that glow you are after! Getting a envy facial a few days before your Christmas party is the perfect time to allow your skin time to heal and refresh it’s renewal cycle. Envy Facial is the only face and body skin-resurfacing treatment to gently yet effectively exfoliate damaged skin cells.

ith over 25 years’ experience in yoga, holistic movement and holding women’s circles, Andrea Jackson has taken her foot off the accelerator and enhanced her offerings by becoming the self-confessed ‘Queen of Slow’. Despite her love of yoga and alternative health, Andrea was once herself an adrenaline junkie, pushing too hard and running too fast, and found herself battling with mental and physical disease following the loss of her mum (a selfconfessed workaholic) to cancer in 2016. If this sounds all too familiar and the upcoming festive season fills you with dread at the never-ending to-do list and family pressures, then you may wish to seek a dose of Andrea’s wisdom, and slow right down; becoming so much more, by doing so much less. “It has taken me a long time to get to this place,” Andrea says. “It began one night in the midst of a panic attack that ended up in me hyperventilating and calling out a doctor. At the time I was in a life that was extremely turbulent and volatile, and my doctor advised a change of lifestyle and to take up some form of relaxation. So, I found yoga. “Looking back, I had always been drawn to the mystical arts,” she adds, “reading Tarot at the age of 17, I was a hairdresser at the time and I had women lining up for

“My strong connection to the wisdom of my heart got me through my darkest days” Tarot readings at my bedsit at one time! Losing my mum to cancer was a huge catalyst in my life and a huge loss, my spiritual connection and my strong connection to the wisdom of my heart got me through my darkest days and nights. During that time, I committed myself to working with women and Moon Tree was born, later transitioning to The Wild Woman Academy.” Andrea has mastered the art of slow – enabling wise women to know when it’s the right time for rest, in order to have energy

in reserve to use at the right time. The relentless hamster wheel is replaced by Andrea’s ‘Wild Feminine Wisdom Wheel’, which harnesses the power of nature and ancient, cosmic wisdom. These seasonal and daily cycles are so readily overlooked in our 24-hour full on, caffeine-fuelled existence, which often leaves us feeling depressed, anxious, and possibly even chronically ill. Andrea holds both live and online circles and yoga classes for women, featuring restorative yoga, cacao and a healthy dose of moon magic, expertly wrapped up in Andrea’s grounded, fun-loving and creative spirit. The circles encourage sharing and community spirit, welcoming women of all ages, and especially those at the peri/menopausal stage, who benefit hugely from Andrea’s wisdom and mastery of the feminine arts. One-to-one slow coaching is an alternative for those wanting a more individual focus. Andrea also offers yoga classes in the York area, and is accredited in cacao medicine, spirit dance and wild feminine yoga. BATHING IN HISTORY

Harrogate’s baths did manage to remain profitable in the inter-war period, but by 1969, when the axe fell, the treatments and technology they offered had become outdated and demand had dropped significantly. The impressive Royal Baths building was split into several units, but the Turkish Baths were deemed to be viable and allowed to remain – albeit with a focus more on massages than increasingly questionable electrotherapy treatments. Harrogate is the best-preserved survivor from the golden era of the health spa, and there are only two other similar ‘hammams’ remaining in England. Although the heating now has a more environmentally-friendly electric source, the Victorian engineering system is still in use. A chimney cascades heat around the building, and the glazed bricks and high ceilings retain it. With the pace of life today, it’s more important than ever to take time out to unwind and devote yourself to the serious business of relaxing. The Turkish Baths Harrogate is your opportunity to step back in time. The spa is renowned for its tranquil and peaceful surroundings, enhanced by their team of highly qualified and friendly staff who carry out an extensive menu of contemporary spa treatments and therapies. They offer a variety of indulgent and relaxing treatments; from luxurious candle massages to every day essentials such as manicures and pedicures. As the festive season approaches, it’s an ideal time to think about giving someone the gift of relaxation. You can purchase vouchers and gifts from our online shop. turkishbathsharrogate.co.uk

Why a visit to Harrogate’s Turkish Baths is an experience like no other

B

ack in 1897, Harrogate’s position as a premier spa town was complete with the opening of its Royal Baths. Among the facilities within what was one of the most advanced hydrotherapy centres of its age – and a ‘one-stop-shop’ for treating a variety of Victorian ailments – were the Turkish Baths, and few would have predicted that 126 years later, the ‘hammam’ would be the complex’s only survivor in its original form. Managers took a gamble in 1969, when changing times led to the Royal Baths’

closure and conversion into a number of other uses, and they decided to preserve the Turkish Baths as they had been when Queen Victoria’s granddaughters, Cabinet ministers, foreign royalty and author Agatha Christie enjoyed their unusual therapies. Since then, what was once an exclusive enclave for the wealthy visitors who spent the season in Harrogate has become more affordable and accessible, while retaining its period features and atmosphere. Tough times came in 1914, when war saw the number of well-to-do patrons decline and hydros fall out of favour. As public health improved, convalescent travel was less commonplace. The LOW D OWN Absolutely visits a recently restored country house in Knaresborough, standing in a private rural setting in grounds extending to about 40 acres

L

ow Hall is privately situated in the middle of a mature estate totalling about 40 acres, approached via a meandering tree-lined driveway that opens to reveal a handsome extended farmhouse and neighbouring ancillary accommodation. The exceptional level of privacy and peaceful rural surroundings bely the convenience of Low Hall’s setting, just seven miles from the elegant spa town of Harrogate and three miles to the A1M, equidistant from London and Edinburgh in the heart of Yorkshire. This is a perfectly balanced house, with all of the principal rooms being of near perfect proportions, bathed in plenty of natural light and enjoying contrasting views of the surrounding gardens and grounds. Supporting this is a range of restored and extended brick and stone outbuildings that now provide guest accommodation, leisure space and a

range of stables and barns. The property as a whole is immaculately maintained and presented to a very high standard following a comprehensive program of restoration and refurbishment. The attention to detail throughout the property is quite outstanding. From the moment one enters the reception hall there is a real sense of quality. The standard that has been achieved throughout the property is immediately apparent, although the original character of the building remains intact. The décor represents the best of modern day country house living, each room having its own personality. This extends from the formality of the sitting room, the elegant dining room to the lovely cosy feel of the snug, all three of which centre around attractive period fireplaces flanked by timber multi paned sash windows. As one would expect with a house of this calibre, there is a large, high specification kitchen, fitted with an extensive range of hand built hardwood units beneath A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“From the moment you enter the reception hall, there is a sense of quality” contrasting granite and marble work surfaces, finished with quality appliances, including a three-oven AGA. Adjoining the kitchen area is a spacious orangery providing a grandstand view of the grounds and lake beyond which attracts a procession of wildlife. On the first floor there are a total of five double bedrooms, two full suites, one en-suite and the remaining two sharing a full bathroom. All have been tastefully decorated and offer arresting views of the surrounding grounds and rolling countryside beyond. A short walk across the main driveway is an extensive range of stone and brick buildings divided into a self contained two bedroom cottage, with separate kitchen/ dining room, sitting room and sun room. Alongside

this and above a triple garage is a large home office with adjacent sitting room, also well suited to a gym, games room or teenager’s suite. Completing the picture is the Gardeners Cottage, a one bedroom, self contained cottage, including an open plan kitchen/living room and en suite bedroom. The property is encompassed by beautiful parkland and paddocks creating a perfect setting to this wonderful country house. Entered through a private gated entrance, it leads to an impressive tree-lined driveway offering intriguing glimpses of the imposing main house. Surrounding the house and outbuildings, the grounds are really something to behold. The formal gardens are exquisite with a rose garden, carefully planted trees and immaculate lawns. A large patio area surrounds the rear of the house providing endless entertaining space overlooking the lake, surrounding fields and woodland beyond. The property has first class equestrian facilities including a dressage ménage with full width mirrors, an extensive and beautifully maintained stable yard. Arranged around a central courtyard and with a separate access drive, there are eight loose boxes, a tack room and double height barn suitable for storage. There are a number of fenced paddocks to the north of the property – the paddocks sit on level ground making for an ideal space for a helicopter pad. This is truly a remarkable property: hidden behind a traditional façade, Low Hall has all of the benefits of a modern country residence. Low Hall is on the market for a guide price of £5,950,000. FA B R I C AW Hainsworth is an iconic Yorkshire textile mill that has had many memorable moments throughout its history. Absolutely Yorkshire takes a closer look

A A RECENT ROYAL VISIT

family-run heritage textile mill established in 1783 has spent the year celebrating its 240th business anniversary. AW Hainsworth manufactures iconic British woollen cloth, high-performing textiles, and iconic fabrics for customers worldwide. Abimelech Hainsworth founded his cloth merchant business in the village of Farsley in 1783, and since then, the company has seen tremendous success. AW Hainsworth is an official Royal Warrant Holder and crafted the UK’s first heat and flame-retardant fabric. Today, its fabrics are used in many industries including for the home. Some of AW Hainsworth’s key historical moments include Hainsworth fabrics being worn at both the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and the recent Coronation of King Charles III earlier this year. The fully-integrated, vertical textile mill also supplies woven felt for pianos and other musical instruments, designs national and international transportation fabric, and protective materials for emergency services and military personnel worldwide. The fabric design, manufacture and supply business has focused on cutting-edge innovation and product development in

recent years – by launching a quarter of a million-pound state-of-the-art new laboratory space. The business also holds sustainability at its heart: it is working on several projects to reduce energy, emissions and water and making significant investments towards employee health and well-being. Managing Director of AW Hainsworth, Amanda McLaren, explains: “When I first joined the business in 2021 I was acutely aware of Hainsworth’s long and prestigious history and how important it was to guard this as a ‘custodian’ of this amazing family business and West Yorkshire mill. “In order to understand our future, we have to respect and remember our past, and I have learned a lot by looking back at the stories of those who steered Hainsworth through the previous two centuries. We continue to build on this foundation, with a strong commitment to investing and building a bright future for all our stakeholders. “We have an amazing team of people at Hainsworth today who are all working with pride, passion, expertise and a desire to succeed,” Amanda adds. “To mark this important milestone, the team at AW Hainsworth will be celebrating with a party for our customers, employees and suppliers.” For more information, visit awhainsworth.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

area of the home is warm and comfortable when it’s cold outside they can actually reduce your heating bills – you often don’t need to put the heating on in the rest of the house for anywhere near as long, or even at all. That’s the side-benefit, the real bonus is the way they cook – no need for steamers, slow cookers, toasters or other clutter on the worktop; the radiant heat from the ovens and a few cheat-techniques mean your food is more nourishing and tastes much better.

COOKING UP A STORM

Ben Cook, son of the current T.N. Cook owner, Michael Cook, on why the business has focused on AGA and Everhot range cookers Q How have range cookers evolved in the years since you first launched the business? A They have evolved considerably becoming more controllable and economic to live with, and in recent times progress has accelerated. In the early years AGAs were only available in solid fuel (anthracite or manufactured coal, never wood – that’s a popular myth!) then in 1964 oil, and in the late 1960s gas fuelled models were introduced. There was a short-lived electric model in the mid-1970s but then in the mid-1980s the Economy 7 electric arrived. It looked like an AGA, cooked exactly the same as all AGAs do and heated using cheap-rate overnight electricity. The mid-2000s saw the 13 amp Electric model, then in 2011 the much more controllable AGA Total Control was launched – they don’t need to be on all the time so don’t use much fuel and don’t overheat modern, better insulated homes in warmer weather, but can still warm the kitchen in winter. Nowadays it’s only the controllable electric models we sell (the old style ‘on-all-the-time’ versions are no longer available).

Everhot have always been forward-thinking; lower running costs, greater controllability and low-power connections are their core benefits. Many people don’t realise but they’ve been around for over 40 years (the first was their ‘60’ model, specifically designed to run on renewable energy). Over the years Everhot have been ahead of their competitors, adding extra flexibility with different sized models, optional induction hobs, low power ‘ECO’ mode and programming to allow the cooker to be in a cheaper low energy mode when it’s not being used for cooking.

Q How long have you had the showroom in Skipton? A We’ve been in our premises at Close House Farm on Otley Road on the edge of Skipton for 24 years now and were on Water Street in town for 25 years prior to that. We moved primarily as the building we were in needed refurbishment, however being at Close House Farm has given us lots more space, externally for parking and deliveries, and internally to expand the Cookware showroom and give us room for all the display cookers and our cookery demonstration area. Q What would we find in your showroom? A We have a large selection of AGA and Everhot cookware and accessories, plus over 35 cookers (many working); just about all models and colours from each manufacturer. Q Do people still have time to buy a new range cooker before Christmas? A Yes, just! AGA still have availability for most models although we’re getting close to the cut-off point. Everhot have been very busy again this year and have closed for preChristmas delivery of new orders, however we do have one or two on order for stock and a couple of ex-display models which could be installed in time for the big day. tncook.co.uk

Q What are the benefits of AGA and Everhot cookers? A Both brands have such long lifespans – 30, 40, even 50 years and more so investing in one saves buying three or four other cookers, and we’re here for service or maintenance if it’s needed (although it isn’t needed much these days with the all-electric models). They warm the room they’re in – very handy in a ‘living kitchen’ or kitchen-diner where most of our family life happens. Since this A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

stablished in York, The Tile Company remains family run and their experience in the industry allows for expert guidance and sourcing in creating bathroom designs ranging from the everyday to the extraordinary. Their showrooms in Yorkshire offer a curated selection of the world’s finest natural stone, new generation porcelain stoneware tiles and luxury bathroom products – and here are two collections that show why they are ahead of the rest.

Right now, there’s an incredible collection of expressive nature-inspired and floral patterns in large formats of 60 x 120 cm for walls and floors, or 30 x 60cm/40 x 120cm for walls. From wonderfully vintage with wild flowers, petals in a water-coloured effect, large tropical and palm leaves, botanical motifs, geometric patterns dense with colour, or delicate cherry-tree flowers and branches. To complete the look, there’s a range of solidcoloured backgrounds to experiment with colour and vegetation pairings.

The most up-to-the-minute trend in interior design is wood panelling for walls. The use of thin wooden slats to cover walls serves a purely aesthetic function, but transmits the warmth and personality of the original material to the rooms. The collection is available in cypress, ash and oak tones. Moreover, it is an ideal complement to any other series, since it can be installed on an entire wall, or just a section of it to create baseboards, headboards or cosy nooks. It can also be used on bathroom, shower and kitchen walls. Available in 45cm x 120cm.

Everest on what to look for when buying new windows

W

hen it comes to purchasing new windows there are hundreds of styles, designs and colours to choose from – and this only relates to how they look. In terms of performance, there are even more elements to bear in mind. Window and door specialists, Everest, have explored some of the key points homeowners should consider before agreeing on what new windows they’d like installed in their home. “uPVC windows can last anywhere between 20 and 30 years, so it’s important homeowners truly understand what they’re investing in,” they explain. “We always encourage people to explore how the windows will look and how well they perform. It’s also important to consider what they need their new windows to do and the problems they want to address in their home. With this knowledge homeowners will be sure

to have the confidence that they’ve made the right decision.” Window styles and aesthetics The way windows look is vital because they have a big impact on both kerb appeal and the value of a property. Reviewing the full design options and styles is essential to ensure homeowners find windows that suit their home and personal taste. Security and safety One of the best ways for homeowners to identify if a window is safe and secure is if it is PAS24 and Secured by Design certified. Any windows with this accreditation mean they have been rigorously tested to ensure they can protect a home from unwanted intruders. Energy efficiency Modern high-performing windows combining quality glass with a specialist window frame are fantastic for maximising a home’s energy efficiency. Windows with

a low U-value are brilliant at retaining heat inside a property, whereas a high G-value can maximise free energy from the sun via solar gain. Everest offers the ability to select the type of glass used depending on a homeowner’s personal preferences and the indoor environment they’d like to create. Noise reduction Coated double glazed windows are great for significantly reducing external sounds and can help to create calmer living spaces. With a better understanding of how each of these key elements plays a fundamental role in a window’s performance, homeowners will be well equipped to invest in new windows that meet their specific needs. Everest offers a wide range of options and choices allowing you to design and configure a window that not only looks great, but also delivers high-quality performance. ONE TO WATCH YSP GRADUATE AWARD

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is delighted to announce up and coming artist Astrid Butt as the recipient of its 2023 Yorkshire Graduate Award. Leeds-based Astrid intrigued the YSP judges with her use of animal-human hybrid characters to explore womanhood and domestication. She is currently studying for her Master’s degree in Fine Art at University of Leeds and her work utilises the grotesque and surreal to express female anxieties. astridbutt.co.uk

FORWARD Queen Ethelburga’s first ever UK school student motorsport team achieve championship fourth place in class

Q

ueen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE) and driver, Arthur Simondet, are celebrating after achieving fourth place overall in the Student Motorsport Challenge, a racing class within the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship. The team, QE Motorsport, are thrilled to have ranked so highly amongst a field of college and university teams and to break records never seen before. This news comes as the team achieved not only a fifth place in class finish at the last race meet of the season at Silverstone, but two previous class runner up podium finishes at Croft and Anglesey. Driver Arthur says: “We’ve had an incredible season this year – I’ve mentioned it countless times already, but I’m amazed at how much the student team has evolved since Croft. At our first round, everyone was running around unsure of what to do or where to do it. Silverstone felt as if I

was driving in my primary drive, with a professional endurance racing team. The students are incredibly well-positioned going forward into 2024 and, in the meantime, we’ll relish our P4 in class.” The Collegiate launched QE Motorsport in September 2022 as part of their dedication to driving forward new and exciting extra-curricular opportunities for its students. It started when a team from Student Motorsport and a team from Oxford Brookes University visited with a kit to prepare a car and coordinated a “Pit Stop Challenge” to demonstrate what is involved in building a race car. From there, a team of 28 Year 12 students worked alongside QE staff and Race Engineer, Will Snuggs from WJS Motorsport Engineering & Trackside, to transform the standard Citroen C1 into a race-ready contender. Within three weekends, students had already helped strip the car in preparation for fitting new race parts. The car was built in time to compete at the Croft Circuit race meet, where the team managed a fantastic

weekend, placing second in class in the team’s first ever race, and fourth place in class in both the second and third races. Matt Clayton, Head of Co-Curricular at QE, says: “QE Motorsport has been a groundbreaking project that reflects our commitment to providing high quality co-curricular learning opportunities. It has provided our students with a unique opportunity that promotes teamwork, critical thinking under pressure and other future-ready skills that will serve them well in their academic and professional pursuits. To see the entire team embrace the challenge with enthusiasm, resilience and a real sense of camaraderie and collaboration has been wonderful and for it to lead to a championship fourth place in class in our first ever race season is outstanding.” QUEEN ETHELBURGA'S To find out more about QE Motorsport, the school, and its Co-Curricular options, follow @queenethelburgas on Instagram or visit qe.org

he Independent Schools of the Year Awards aim to recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in all areas of education, and through their 23 award categories they seek to shine a light on new initiatives and those schools who are delivering unique and invaluable programmes and partnerships to benefit their pupils and wider communities. With younger pupils also working towards their School Values Awards, which focus on positivity, courage and kindness, the result at the end of Year 6 is a group of enthusiastic and resilient ‘Girls of Steel’, ready to move on to their secondary education and take their place in an ever-changing world. Reflecting on his school’s incredible achievement, Head Christepher Hald says: “Our Girls of Steel character education programme provides opportunities for creativity, risk-taking, teamwork, leadership, competition and social entrepreneurship – everything that will be required of the leaders of tomorrow. Every pupil is valued and allowed to develop as an individual; their Sheffield Girls’ experience is much more than just going to school – rather, it is the journey to self. conic North Yorkshire stately home Castle Howard have released tickets for their 2023 Christmas event, Christmas in Neverland. Christmas in Neverland will run in December through to 2 January. Castle Howard’s 300-year-old house is transformed with floristry, installations, props, soundscapes and projections, creating a Peter Pan inspired festive experience. Charlotte Lloyd Webber Event Design are creating the magical installations inside the House for the sixth year running, including a Mermaid’s Lagoon, Captain Hook’s Cabin, and the Jolly Roger. The team are prioritising sustainability and using recycled materials including paper and glass in their designs. Father Christmas is also paying a special visit to the stately home. Visitors can book for Father Christmas in the Castle to meet him in the main House, or Santa’s Grotto to meet him in the Stable Courtyard. Wreath making and guided tours are also available, plus a special opportunity to meet Design Director of CLW Event Design, Adrian Lillie, and enjoy a guided tour from his creative perspective.
