t is International Women's Day on 8 March, a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women – and our county is certainly a beacon when it comes to female entrepreneurs. We start this issue with two exclusive interviews with women in very different industries. Amie Bone has become known as the go-to for anyone looking for a floral extravaganza, and as she prepares to return to Waddesdon Manor with Fantasia 3, we find out what planted the seed of this career direction. Then we head to Corn Exchange Newbury to meet up with their Director, Jessica Jhundoo-Evans, who explains why the arts need your support now. These two act as a precursor for a very special tour around the county meeting those women who are blazing quite a trail in their respective working worlds, with 12 pages of interviews starting on page 42. Not forgetting that most important woman in my life, who I will be wishing a happy Mother's Day to on 10 March...

POWER As she prepares for Fantasia 3, floral creative superstar Amie Bone reflects on a career that began by chance in 1999

V PHOTOGRAPHY: SANSHINE PHOTOGRAPHY

isiting the result of Fantasia 2 last year was an eye-popping experience. It was a floral extravaganza, with colour bursting from every corner, not to mention being bombarded with gorgeous scents. For some, this would be heaven as they imagine it. “You think Fantasia 2 was big,” Amie Bone, the woman behind the floral masterclass, says, “that has nothing on 3…” Amie, like many of her creations, is a colourful person to chat to. Absolutely has found some time in her schedule preparing for Fantasia 3 at Waddesdon Manor and running her hugely successful business to look back at a career that has blossomed and bloomed ever since she worked on a market stall in Oxford in 1999. “It was just a job,” she says on flowers back then. “I was 18 and a party animal! I never expected to meet [her now husband] Jason and fall in love with him or flowers. I love the joy that flowers bring – whether a happy or sad occasion flowers always make you smile.” Even launching her own business happened in a roundabout way. “Amie Bone Flowers was born due to an inspection from Watford borough council at the garden centre we were running,” she explains. “We were informed we had to pay business rates on a shed within

22

the grounds and knew the space had to earn money to pay for this – hence we decided to sell bunches of flowers in buckets to cover the rates every month. Slowly the business grew and I taught myself how to make bouquets, and then funeral tributes. We weren’t your typical florist as we saw it as a way to simply cover the cost of the business rates at that time.” Slowly, however, Amie’s reputation spread and a shop space soon followed. “I felt stagnated in a shop environment,” she admits. “I wanted more and no is never an option, therefore I looked at adapting. Renewing our wedding vows in 2014 made me realise we could create amazing events with florals and styling. If I could make myself feel this way I wanted to give this feeling to my couples – so my thought process changed and we’ve been growing ever since.” Born from a simple love of flowers, today the Amie Bone business masters the management of local and international exclusive private parties, ultra-luxe weddings and high end corporate and brand events. With an unparalleled reputation for exceeding her client’s expectations, Amie is globally renowned for her passion and dedication to a career that spans over 20 years. As a creative visionary, her skill lies first and foremost in listening to her client’s hopes and desires, their individual stories and transforming them into spectacular celebrations that feel entirely and uniquely about them. “I

“I am in the business of bringing dreams to life” am in the business of bringing dreams to life,” she adds, “delivering exceptional levels of creativity and translating what exists in your head and your heart into the most memorable and meaningful moment of your life.” Those dreams extend to inspiring the next Amie Bone. Fantasia 3, running from 19-21 March at The Dairy, Waddesdon Manor, is an incredible three-day floral design masterclass. Course attendees will work side by side with Amie and her lead creative team to design and produce large scale floral installations throughout her masterclass with a strong focus on harnessing creativity, set design and event production. You will gain invaluable teaching time with Amie and a carefully selected line-up of the most talented contacts in her address book, the very people she calls upon to help deliver the high-end international wedding

design she is known and respected for globally. Your finished work will then be showcased to a 200 VIP guest list, invited to dine within the floral installations. Last year’s guests included those from Sotheby’s, Claridge’s, Vanity Fair, BAFTA, Country Life and Vogue. “Fantasia has been the pinnacle of my career with so much love and creativity poured into each aspect of the events,” Amie smiles. “I think the most important thing to pass onto others is that there is no fear in taking a chance – a lot of people that come to our courses are scared to take the leap into luxury design as they have no previous experience. We all have to start somewhere. “I love The Dairy as a venue,” she adds, “it’s in such a picturesque location with the glorious lake in the background, surrounded by trees and rolling fields. The

venue itself is a hidden gem – the beautiful water garden and the stunning halls with the bare beams and high ceilings.” When she’s not busy creating memorable occasions, home is Watford, on the outskirts of Bricket Wood. “I love where we are located with easy access to London and the North. I love the greenery, and the woodland walks, which are at the bottom of our road. I don’t get as much time to enjoy it as I’d like, but I love visiting Prime steakhouse in Chalfont, The Grove is a favourite place to visit in the summer, and Battlers Green farm shop is another favourite spot.” All of that, though, is having to take a back seat as preparations for Fantasia 3 ramp up – and if the images on these pages are not enough to entice you to get involved, Amie’s endless enthusiasm for it should seal the deal. “The team have been working tirelessly behind the scenes for the last year,” she beams. “It’s going to be epic!” The three-day masterclass and gala dinner is priced at £4,950 and tickets can be purchased at amiebonefantasia.com

CORN EXCHANGE PHOTO BY ADAM HILLIER

Q What attracted you to working at Corn Exchange? A At first, it was a job description that felt like it had been written for me! But on closer inspection it was the breadth and impact of activity: the forward thinking and partnership working of the learning and participation programme, the dynamism of 101 and the outdoor work, the ambition in bringing The Base to fruition and the community feel of the Corn Exchange but with national touring shows.

Q How honoured are you to hold the role of Director now? A Oh goodness, very! With a young family, I had made the decision to loosen any career ambitions for a while and I was content working with the fabulous team here at the Corn Exchange as Deputy Director. So it was a rollercoaster of emotions to have been offered the role to lead. I have been Chair of the Board of Trustees at South Hill Park Trust Arts Centre in Bracknell since 2017 and so in the end it was an obvious decision. Q Are there plenty of challenges for Corn Exchange and the arts in general? A Oh yes! There are the age old challenges of removing the stigma around art not being for everyone and venues inhabiting old failing buildings. But current challenges are lack of funding in the sector generally, low wages and retention of good people, and rising costs that you don’t want to pass onto your audiences because you want to be inclusive and accessible. The creative industries are the fastest growing sector in the UK economy, it was arts and culture that brought light to the darkness of the pandemic and the benefits of engagement are increasingly well documented – it shouldn’t be this hard to keep arts organisations alive.

GRAHAM MACKAY-BRUCE IN THE OTHER RICHARD

DON BENI

Q In your time as Director so far, what have been the highlights for you? A I have been Director for seven months and in that time I would say hearing from participants on our arts on social prescription programme which our classes help them get through the week that touches my heart. Or an incredible giant puppet called Mo performing through the Newbury streets telling the story of a refugee child, which feels so important and relevant. Or a show which talks to our local deaf community or our panto that gets 20,000 people belly laughing, both offering connection and enjoyment. I mean, so many highlights! Q What’s to come in 2024? A More of the above! The Corn Exchange

aims to be the heart of our community and I’m looking forward to trying to meet their needs. We are developing some new outreach projects alongside the range of fantastic exhibitions at The Base. We also have a capital project underway, fundraising for £1.5 million to transform the town’s historic Old Library into a new arts hub; a home for learning and wellbeing opportunities for all ages, a creative space for our community. We are so excited about this project and the potential it holds for Newbury, it is going to be fabulous.

“Arts brought light to the darkness of the pandemic” Q Do you think Newbury in general has plenty to offer? A Absolutely. It is a great town. I am not a Newbury resident, but it has been refreshing and I am really enjoying the personable and collaborative nature amongst key stakeholders here, and therefore the opportunities on offer are wide reaching. In particular the arts scene here is plentiful and varied, and so whatever your interests you will find something. Q When you do get some free time, what’s your ideal day? A One day my free time will be spent learning the piano. But right now, nothing out of the ordinary… just spending time with family. Nothing chills me out quite like a long walk, some tea and cake – that ideally we’ve baked! – some crafting, and then a film all squashed on the sofa. Or perhaps a beach walk, a spot of castle building, a good book and fish and chips. If I have some time to myself, I enjoy watching dance, visiting a new place, and drinks with friends keeps me centred, helps me reflect and reassures me of what I’m doing in this crazy world. Q Corn Exchange aside, are there other places you love visiting in Berkshire? A Apart from the Corn Exchange and The

Base, we love to meander through The Look Out in Bracknell or paddleboard at Horseshoe Lake in Sandhurst. The food is simply delicious at Don Beni in Crowthorne and I’m a sushi convert since visiting Sushi Maki in Newbury. A nice afternoon is spent at a brilliant ‘pick your own’ farm in Wokingham and just down the road Holme Grange village, a haven of independents and lovely hot chocolate! I have to mention South Hill Park – it is a beautiful arts centre with so much going on and it is where I discovered the best dance classes for adults. Q For anyone who hasn’t visited Corn Exchange before, what would you say to them to encourage them down? A What have you got to lose? Give us a try. A range of fantastic shows and exhibitions for young and old – check. Delicious food and drink (have you tried our loaded nachos or home made cake?) – check. Over 50 different courses and classes to learn something new – check. Want to be part of a large scale outdoor show? Check. Somewhere super friendly just to sit and be or to meet new people – check. We are ready and waiting to welcome you.

It’s also funny and revealing, in part thanks to performances by Gatiss, Johnny Flynn, who plays Burton, and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor, that really get under their characters’ skins. Combined with Mendes’ sweeping, cinematic direction and a design by Es Devlin that moves the action from monochrome rehearsal rooms to the bright lights of sophisticated New York, the play unfolds like a beautifully fashioned sequence of boxes. As Burton and Gielgud battle with their own demons, Thorne, Mendes and the actors offer an insight into theatre itself – the way it uses artifice to reveal the deepest truths about human nature. It’s an astonishing night out. themotiveandthecue.com

PHOTOS: MICHAEL WHARLEY

T

he Motive and the Cue is a love letter to the theatre – and to the people who make it. Jack Thorne’s wonderful play takes as its starting point the famous production of Hamlet on Broadway in 1964, when the Welsh actor Richard Burton took on the role of Shakespeare’s prince. Burton was absolutely at the height of his fame; his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor had made the front pages around the world. The director of the production was Sir John Gielgud, another theatrical great, once the most celebrated Hamlet of his day, but out of favour and out of fashion. The two men – one longing to show he was a serious actor, and one hoping to find a new wave of success – clashed about just about everything, with Taylor watching from the wings like a wise angel. But out of their arguments, faithfully recorded by two other actors who sensed they were living through history, came a production that set the record for performances of Shakespeare on Broadway. From this story, Thorne and director Sam Mendes have fashioned a play that has moved rapidly from the stage of the National Theatre, where it opened in April last year, to the Noel Coward Theatre in the West End, where it is drawing huge and appreciative audiences for a limited run that ends on 23 March. Its remarkable success is based on the fact that its themes extend far beyond its ostensible subject. As Mark Gatiss, who is playing Gielgud, said in a recent interview: “It’s a tribute to the play that it has managed to appeal to audiences who aren’t obsessed with theatrical history, as well as those who are. What they get, I guess, is these two titanic figures having a battle of wills and then finding this moment when they come together. It’s very moving.”

Festival RISE line-up will once again give a platform for young musicians, comedians and visual artists to take their first steps on stage, as well offering opportunities for young people aspiring to work behind the scenes. New for this year, Henley Festival has presented the inaugural Westcoast RISING Star Award – celebrating outstanding achievement and great potential – to singer, songwriter, producer and multiinstrumentalist KATYA, known for her refreshingly personal solo performances where she combines her soulful vocals and layered guitar with electronic beats, jazz overtones and atmospheric soundscapes. KATYA’s debut single, I'll Take Your Number, was released the day before her performance on the Acoustic Stage at Glastonbury, and garnered national and international radio support with spins on BBC Radio 1 and on Germany’s Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Opening this year’s Henley Festival on its iconic Floating Stage is none other than the international icon, singer and actress Nicole Scherzinger, fresh from her triumphant residency at The Savoy Theatre starring as lead role Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Sunset Boulevard – for which she won an Evening Standard Theatre Award for ‘Best Musical Performance’. The first festival night will be brought to a vibrant ending by The Bootleg Beatles, the world’s premier Beatles tribute band, taking The Club on a whistle-stop journey through the most revolutionary and divisive decade of all: the Swinging Sixties. On Thursday, Dave Stewart, the awardwinning singer, songwriter, musician, producer, innovator and Eurythmics cofounder, is set to captivate the Floating Stage audience with ‘Dave Stewart’s Eurythmics Songbook’ including a carefully curated selection of timeless hits from Eurythmics' extraordinary catalogue of songs. Henley Festival is thrilled to welcome ‘Empress of Soul’, music legend, seven-time Grammy Award winner, Hollywood Walk of Fame and Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee,

Gladys Knight, to headline the unique Floating Stage on Friday – an extra special occasion as it will mark last show of her UK Farewell Tour. As the sun goes down on Henley Festival’s Friday evening, award-winning television presenter, radio DJ, podcaster and number one best-selling author, Rylan, will be DJing and entertaining the crowd with a trademark larger-than-life performance. The extraordinary House Gospel Choir will open Saturday night’s Floating Stage performances, getting the Henley audience singing, dancing and raving along with their unique House meets Gospel experience. The atmosphere will continue to be electric on Saturday evening as Ministry of Sound Ibiza Anthems with Ellie Sax take to the Floating Stage. On Sunday – the final evening at Henley Festival – the Floating Stage will welcome not one, but two incredible musical talents. The night will star one of classical music’s true greats: Nigel Kennedy. Kennedy remains the bestselling violinist of all time, and his virtuoso technique, unique talent and mass appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. Rounding out the festival is none other than Sam Ryder, who – since uploading his now infamous covers during lockdown in 2020 – has rocketed into the musical stratosphere. With his hit single Space Man, he gave the UK its best Eurovision result since 1998 and the highest-charting UK Eurovision entry in over a quarter of a century. ortrait painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was renowned for the ability to bring his subjects to life. Rather than being driven purely by the sensibilities of his wealthy clientele, he used dress and fashion as a powerful tool to establish their individuality while proclaiming his own aesthetic agenda. A new exhibition at Tate Britain explores this, featuring 60 paintings alongside more than a dozen period dresses and accessories, many of which were worn by his sitters. Sargent worked collaboratively with his subjects, but also took creative liberties, changing and omitting details as he saw fit. He regularly chose their outfits or manipulated their clothing, as in Lady Sassoon 1907, which will be displayed at the start of the exhibition alongside the original black taffeta opera cloak worn in the image, revealing how he pulled, wrapped, and pinned the fabric to add drama to his portrait. In this respect, Sargent was working in a similar way to how an art director at a fashion shoot would today. Sargent and Fashion also explores the artist’s subversion of social codes and conventions through portraiture. His clothing choices suggest the blurring of characteristics that once defined masculine and feminine appearance, reflecting the shifting ground of traditional gender roles at the end of the 19th century. In addition to his wealthy patrons, Sargent chose to

portray professional performers, including dancers, actors, and singers, which allowed him to indulge his taste for visual spectacle. His dramatic image of Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth 1889 will be shown alongside Terry’s dress and cloak. Together, this collection of paintings and garments offer a new generation and those already familiar with his work the chance to discover and reconsider Sargent and his enduring influence. Dr Selena Langdon BUS I NE S S : Founder & Medical

Doctor, Berkshire Aesthetics WE B S I TE : berkshireaesthetics.com

Q Before working in Aesthetics, what

was your working background? A I’ve been a doctor now for 17 years, having trained in Plastic Surgery and General Practice. Although I initially worked in the NHS whilst building my Aesthetics career, I have been full time in Aesthetics since 2017. Q What inspired you to work in Aesthetics?

As International Women’s Day falls in March, we decided to chat to some of the top female business leaders across the county

42

DR SELENA LANGDON

“WE ARE LAUNCHING A NEW TREATMENT THIS YEAR AND WILL BE THE FIRST CLINIC TO OFFER IT IN THE UK” A Working alongside many eminent Plastic Surgeons most certainly encouraged me to explore the Aesthetics sector. I felt it combined Plastic Surgery and GP as a specialty, allowing me to practice both holistically and maintained my hands on surgical skills. Q What do you think

makes you different? A I have always tried to position myself with a focus on patient safety. Aesthetics in the UK is often referred to as the ‘Wild West’, due to the lack of regulation. It has been my aim to deliver safe and evidence-based procedures in a medical setting, in the same way any other medical speciality would deliver care. Q How was 2023 for you? A It brought a few different challenges

as a business owner, as well as a parent. We had our first child in November 2022 and juggling

motherhood alongside work has been challenging. I think many businesses were impacted by financial uncertainty in 2023, but I hope we have come out the other side in one piece! Q What is new for 2024? A We are launching a new treatment

this year and will be the first clinic to offer it in the UK. We have been lucky to have been selected as a clinical trial centre of excellence and once the trial is completed we will be able to reveal this exciting procedure later this year. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A I would like to work on my health and wellbeing, as well as spend quality time with my family. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A Hopefully travelling to Australia to see my husband’s family after a very long gap!

Q What inspired you to work in Aesthetics? A During my time as a surgical trainee, I was exposed to the use of Botox and Dermal Fillers for medical conditions, such as treating migraines, excessive sweating and scar improvement. I had a natural progression and began using these techniques for more cosmetic purposes. I found that the experience both transformative for patients and professionally rewarding for me – and I haven't looked back in the decade since. Q What do you think makes you different? A I would have to say it's a combination of my cumulative experience in medicine, surgery and dermatology combined with my experience as a woman in this era – where we have more access than ever before to cosmetic treatments as well as constant media coverage of "ageing". My focus is on providing holistic treatment plans for patients that address both their surface skin issues, but also deeper regenerative needs. My guiding principle is that my patients feel better about themselves, but not feel like a different person. Q How was 2023 for you? A I was a new mother in 2023! It's

been tough balancing my career and home responsibilities, but I feel that I have a whole new understanding and can relate much more to mothers now, especially when it comes to our appearance. Mothers often neglect themselves as they focus all their energies on their family or career, but in my experience a little bit of pampering for a mother refills her cup. DR DARA SUITE

Q What inspired you to

work in Aesthetics? A I started seeing the positive impact that natural subtle enhancements can make to people's quality of life. I wanted to be a part of the positive change that is being seen in the Aesthetics industry today. Q What do you think makes you different? A As I came from a General Practice background I feel that gives me a great basis to care for my patients holistically. I am passionate about patients' wellbeing as a whole. Aesthetics gives me the opportunity to further enhance their quality of life with small changes.

Q Looking back, how was 2023 for you? A In 2023 I developed my interest in Aesthetics while working on my level 7 diploma and I became a trainer in Aesthetics, which I have loved. Q What is new for 2024? A Over the next year, I think my

favourite treatments will be those focusing on improving the skin, including medical grade skin care and skin boosters and biostimulators such as polynucleotides. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A Over the next year I hope to spend more time with my family and travel when possible. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my close friends and family. As time passes, I have realised this is the thing that gives me the most joy. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Recently, my children have taken a liking to a donkey, and we plan to make him part of our family soon, which is delightful. Q Outside of work, what are you

Being so young had its challenges, but I was determined and at age 18 I was training staff in a cocktail bar/restaurant. After 2 years of working 80 hours a week it was time for a new challenge. Hello estate agency! Didn’t take me long to realise I had a new love, helping people. It’s this that ultimately led to me joining the family business only a few years later. Q What inspired you to work at your business? A Truth be told, my parents (and sister) inspired me. They started the business in 1987 and growing up I watched how hard they worked towards making sure that not only working at BIA, but being a customer too, was life enhancing. After working in other industries, I followed my sister’s footsteps and joined the family business so I could really start trying to make a difference. Q What do you think makes you different? Q What experiences led you to pursue a career in education? A The utter privilege of my own personal education, I was incredibly lucky to be surrounded by inspiring and dedicated mentors and educators, and, this is truly what led me into teaching. I had an extraordinary English teacher at Cheltenham Ladies’ who was exceptional, along with a number of incredible Head Teachers who even to this day, will be discussed at our family dinner table for the contribution and impact they made on all of us. Knowing the difference these people made on me, I have wanted to do the same for others. Q What inspired you to join Godstowe? A I grew up in the local area as a young girl

so was aware of Godstowe from an early age. I went on to receive an all-girls’ education at Cheltenham Ladies’ where, amongst my peers were many Godstowe girls. Growing up alongside these girls, they were always talented, down-to-earth, communityminded, friendly girls with a great sense of integrity, and with a local, national and global outlook. When the Godstowe opportunity came up, these memories flooded back to me. All those years later, the girls here are still the same – exceptionally talented, kind and forward looking. Their love of learning, their zest for life, the genuine atmosphere around the school, and their desire to do well and celebrate their successes is inspiring. This way of life is emulated in the specialist teaching team across the site. Seeing excellence in

action, across all areas not just academia, in music, drama, sport, art – the girls strive for and achieve excellence and it is a privilege to work with girls with this outlook. Q What sets you apart from other schools? A Most certainly our central core

values; integrity, kindness, community spirit, resilience and respect underpin everything here at Godstowe. Happy, confident and successful are the three key words that are reflected through the achievements of all Godstowe girls.

Q What piece of advice would you give your younger self? A In order to fully inspire, seek balance and fun. That true sense of balance, leading through self-care, trying new personal experiences, valuing and sharing your own quality time provides creativity and sustainability in your role and helps you to grow and offer a more rounded version of yourself to others. I say to the girls regularly "anything you can do that keeps you fresh and enthusiastic in yourself" is a positive way to spend your time. To keep that sense of balance and invest in yourself is so important. Q What's on the horizon in 2024? A 2025 will see our 125th anniversary –

and immense planning for this is already underway. We partnered up with Downe House for the first time this year with a residential trip to their beautiful Chateau de Sauveterre and the Year 7 girls experienced a full immersion French week in January, alongside a sustainability programme, that will continue in future years. Launching in September, the London Bus route from Brook Green – a daily service which we have been anticipating for some time now.

living with it, but I choose every day to focus on the positives. An early bird through and through, straight in, head down whilst the world is still sleeping. Productivity seems to hit differently when you’re up before the sunrises. I’m also a people person and a hands-on too so whether it’s HR, PR or moving boxes, I wouldn’t expect the team to do anything I wouldn’t be happy doing myself. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A A big question with a very simple answer, to carry on helping those who need it. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A Fitness and food in a nutshell. I love a scenic walk and I play netball competitively 2-3 times a week. I’m also determined 2024 will be the year I enjoy running.

Q Before working at Eton End, what was your background in education? A I have always worked in education – from a young age I was inspired to teach by my own mother who taught in the primary sector for over 30 years. I remember going to work with her when I was in my teens and being enthralled by the way she engaged the children and her passion for developing their personalities and learning. By the time I was at university I had done several work placements in schools and while others on my degree course enjoyed the sports field on a Wednesday afternoon I volunteered in a local primary school.

Victoria Potter BUS I N E S S : Founder, Victoria Potter VPA W E B S I TE : victoriapotter.co.uk

Q Before launching your business, what was your working background? A I was the Executive Assistant to the CEO of British Gas. Q What inspired you to

launch your business? A I have two young children and I realised that I was replaceable in every other role in life, except for being a mum. So I decided to invest my time and energy wisely and create something which meant I could continue the career I’d worked so hard to build, but fitting it around my family. Q What do you think makes you different? A I love to immerse myself in my clients' success – there is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone you know do well. Especially if you’ve played a part and supported them. The most special thing about us is that we like to make each of our clients feel as though they’re our only client. Every one of them is our number one priority. Q Looking back, how was 2023 for you? A It taught me a lot! I achieved all

46

of the personal and professional goals that I had set and manifested, and I enjoyed every minute of doing it – I’m just so fortunate that my client base contains the most exceptional people. I’m so grateful for every one of them. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Self love! We all forget the importance of our own physical and mental health, so this year I hope to put myself near the top of the pile (or as close to the top as possible). Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A I would love to watch my business continue to grow and develop, thereby meeting even more incredible clients and people. I am particularly passionate about providing opportunities for mums who want to get back into work after children – to help build their confidence and find themselves again, so that they shine. I would love to support more women this year and enable them to flourish. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A Spending lots of quality time with my loved ones. There is nothing more important than family, friends and creating memories.

Q What inspired you to work at Eton End? A Eton End is a school which doesn’t have a mould or an expected outcome other than a happy, well rounded young person who is ready to embark on the next stage of their educational journey. For some that is the grammar school, for others it is another independent school. Our children are encouraged to achieve their best and learn to challenge themselves in a caring environment that does all it can to be psychologically safe. That was really important to me, childhood is precious and should be cherished. Q What do you think makes you different? A I am not afraid of doing things differently and thinking outside the traditional education box. I am driven by the needs of our children and will be creative and innovative in strategic planning to ensure our school provides an environment which prepares pupils for the world they are entering, not the world we have left behind. An example of this is our revolutionary classroom design at Eton End, the positive impact on our pupils is evident to everyone who walks through our school. Q How was 2023 for you? A Really exciting! I took up the headship

at Eton End in September 2022, so 2023 was all about creating our new direction and vision. We refurbished our classrooms and opened a Digital Media and Robotics Lab alongside embarking on a 1:1 device policy in the Prep School. We were also inspected in October 2023, it was long awaited and overdue so we were pleased to welcome the ISI team into school and experience the new

inspection framework for independent schools, which has been developed with the 5 definitions of children’s wellbeing in mind. Our report recognised the unique nature of our school. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Introducing change into an organisation is exciting, but it also takes time to embed and flourish, last year was full of new initiatives and staff development. This year we are embedding all those changes and ensuring that our staff, pupils and parents are living the new vision and grasping the opportunities available to them. However, we never stand still and there are some exciting ideas in the embryonic stage so watch this space! Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I am celebrating my Silver Wedding Anniversary in October and I would love to travel around Japan to mark the occasion, but I suspect that falls more into the dreams category than the reality of the situation. I am also resolved to find more time to do things I love this year. Work can take over and I have let things like my book group and other social events slip out of my week. Getting a little perspective back is important for me in 2024.

RACHAEL COX

Q Before working at your school, what was your working background? A I have a rather eclectic background leading up to teaching with Saturday and summer jobs (Little Chef waitress, Export Secretary for John Deere in southwest Germany, summer school English teacher et al) as well as volunteering to teach at Hull Prison and a high security prison in Germany. Q What inspired you to work in education? A Definitely some great teachers at school sowed the seed that teaching could be a pretty cool career, including one of my A-level English teachers who was also a Faber & Faber-published poet. My year abroad as part of my degree saw my plans taking shape when I worked as an English language assistant in a German grammar school. Q What do you think makes you different? A Oh my! Am I different? I certainly love languages. Native English, fluent German, passable French and hopeless Italian.

Q How was 2023 for you? A A very good year. I was super-proud

of everything Queen Anne’s students achieved and delighted to see my first A-level cohort do so well. On a personal level, it was incredible seeing my eldest graduate from Durham University. Many proud moments. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Queen Anne’s has just joined the Round Square organisation, which connects us to 250+ schools in 50 countries around the world. This will open up a wealth of opportunities for our students, including online student-led programmes, collaborating on academic projects, cultural trips and exchanges, swapping resources and sharing ideas. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I am really looking forward to returning to two of my previous schools to celebrate 180th and 60th anniversaries – it will be great to catch up with former colleagues, students and families.

Sarah Rollings BUS I N E S S : Head, Heathfield School W E B S I TE : heathfieldschool.net

Q Before working at Heathfield, what

was your background in education? A Previously, I served as the Senior Deputy Head at Cranford School in Oxfordshire and held key positions including Director of Sport and Head of Year (Sixth Form) at St Helen and St Katharine in Abingdon. These roles have equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of educational leadership and management. In addition to my school-based roles, I currently serve as the Chair of the GSA Sports and Wellness Committee, contribute as an ISI inspector, and fulfil the responsibilities of a Governor at a local school. Q What inspired you to become Headmistress at Heathfield? A I knew from an early age that the only career I ever wanted was to be a teacher. Seeing my father and my own teachers at school inspired me, and having thoroughly enjoyed the role of Head at Heathfield for the past 3 years, I know that leading a school is where my passion lies. Heathfield provides a totally unique environment, something that is commented on by visiting families time and time again, and it was this that first attracted me to Heathfield. Q What do you think makes you different? A I think it’s my unwavering positive

48

attitude and approach. I am determined, empathetic and an eternal optimist. I firmly believe in seeing the big picture while maintaining a practical mindset. I'm all about making tangible differences and effecting change, while embracing the importance of laughter and fun in daily endeavours. Q How was 2023 for you? A Brilliant! Professionally, witnessing

the impact of our team’s efforts from expanding the Sixth Form programme to fostering student leadership opportunities and enriching the sporting curriculum, was incredibly fulfilling. Personally, it was a year of growth – I embarked on a new journey as an ISI inspector and tied the knot in June!

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A We are commemorating Heathfield's 125th year with plans for a new outdoor wellbeing area and other new strategic capital projects. We have introduced extensive new bus routes to accommodate evolving family needs and we’re continuously enhancing student opportunities, with recent highlights including a Music and Drama trip to New York and Borneo planned for July. Q What are your hopes for 2024? A It’s all about the students. I want to

continue to evolve the opportunities for the girls in every way – Heathfield celebrates success across all areas. With a new student leadership team, I’m excited to help them achieve those goals.

Q Before launching your business, what was your working background? A Before becoming an Interior Designer, I worked in Graphic Design which I loved – until I discovered fabrics! Q What inspired you to launch your business? A I bought a property in Cookham Dean many years ago and got involved in designing interiors. There was a beautiful shop in the village that came up for rent, so I impulsively took that on to stock furniture, fabrics and gifts. I qualified as an Interior Designer then too. Q What do you think makes you different? A I understand very quickly what my clients are looking for – when very often they don’t. I have travelled a lot through work and have many contacts and can literally source anything! Everything is individual with me – your home will be unique; and I am with you throughout your project to make sure it all runs smoothly and looks amazing. Q How was 2023 for you? CULTURE • PARTNERSHIP – previously I have specialised in European supplies (and still do), but we have some amazing companies here that I love working with for fabrics, furniture, flooring and surface finishes. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A We have launched a new design service called Roomology, perfect if you’re on a budget and want to redesign one or two rooms. You’ll get a one-to-one design consultation with me, either in-home or online. With photographs and floor plans, I will design a bespoke package including layout and lighting ideas, moodboards, samples and swatches, together with a shopping list to create your perfect room. All packaged in a Roomology box and delivered to your door! Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A I find my work very inspiring and love discovering new concepts. I am looking forward to travelling more this year; so many beautiful places here I haven’t yet visited. I hope to work with more small independent companies to create fabulous projects for clients. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A My family persuaded me to get a puppy last year and it’s been a huge learning curve! Looking forward to spending time with the hopefully well-behaved young dog this year. SANDRA ROTHWELL

Downe House School WEB SITE : downehouse.net

Q Before working at Downe House, what was your background in education? A I have always been a teacher. I knew during my degree, while working at a school in Germany as a language assistant, that I wanted to teach. There was something incredibly energising and exciting about working with young people. I wanted to share that love of learning with others. Q What inspired you to work at Downe House? A Downe House is extraordinary. It is vibrant and busy, yet calm and purposeful too. During my first visit over 20 years ago, I sensed a strong community of young women who were bright, articulate and confident in expressing their views and hopes, but humble about what they had yet to learn. Q What do you think makes you different? A At its core, Downe House offers excellent academic education and pastoral care that prepares women for the world. While we value our traditions, we are also forward-thinking; many girls go on exchanges to one of our 15 global partner schools; some

take part in our Global Internship Programme or our Mini MBA, and they have access to industry-designed leadership opportunities and training at every stage. We embrace AI and emerging technologies and our partnership with Radley College boys’ school gives our girls the best of single-sex education alongside a rich array of co-educational opportunities. Q How was 2023 for you? A Last year saw an exciting period of

innovation. Our overseas sister schools in Oman and Saudi Arabia opened, we reopened our French school, Chateau de Sauveterre, where our Year 8 girls all spend a term, and we hosted our first academic conference with keynote speakers Nick Gibb (MP), and Katharine Birbalsingh. We also began development plans for our new Maths and Digital Innovation Centre.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A I’ve appointed a new Director of Digital Learning and we are looking at developing a comprehensive education programme on the use and understanding of AI (Artificial Intelligence) for both pupils and staff. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A To enjoy the global world of education while expanding Downe House’s overseas campuses. I’d also like to find time to read and learn more about the power of AI. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Caroline Townshend BUS I N E S S : Head, Crosfields School W E B S I TE : crosfields.com

Q Why did you pursue a career in education? A I have always believed in the power of education to transform lives and open doors to future opportunities. From a young age, I have been involved in teaching, coaching and mentoring, and thoroughly enjoyed every role I have held from Swimming Club Captain to Head of Crosfields School! I believe my job is to create the best possible educational experience for each pupil Q What inspired you to

join Crosfields? A I am a firm believer in co-education and the benefits that this offers to children and their development. Having been part of a start up school in London prior, the role at Crosfields excited me as I was keen to support another school during a phase of growth and development. Once I visited, I knew this was the next school for me. I was so impressed by the kindness of the pupils and how they fully embrace the range of opportunities on offer. It is also a real gift to work with such dedicated colleagues each day. Q What sets you apart

from other schools? A Crosfields benefits from having an established Prep-Prep and Juniors

section, which has had years to develop and improve. This base provided an excellent foundation to grow the Senior section of the school whilst bringing in lots of new, experienced staff and ideas. I believe this creates the best of both worlds. Q Reflecting upon your professional journey as you established yourself in the field of education, what piece of advice do you wish you could have given to your younger self? A Go for it! I used to worry that I was too young to give feedback or suggest a different way of doing something. However, as a leader, I love to receive new and different ways we can improve; it shows we are all working together to achieve the best we can. I never thought I would be a Head, and I am lucky to have had mentors who have believed in me more than I have myself, so don’t limit yourself to what you can achieve! Q Are there new offerings, programs,

or initiatives that Crosfields plans to introduce this year? A We have just written our new strategic plan, it is ambitious and exciting! I look forward to seeing it come to life over the next five years. One priority is to become a centre of excellence for digital learning and work is well underway in this area. Another priority is ensuring growth and wellbeing for all members of our community. This year we welcomed a Mental Health Professional to our pastoral team who has made a significant contribution to pupils, families and staff. CAROLINE TOWNSHEND

Areti Bizior BUSIN E SS : Head, Luckley House School WEB SITE : luckleyhouseschool.org

Q Before working at Luckley House, what has been your background in education? A Before joining Luckley as Headmistress, I was Deputy Headmistress at Downe House, a Boarding and Day School in Cold Ash. I have worked in schools for over 20 years now both in the state and independent sectors, in the UK and abroad. Q What inspired you to work in education? A My first encounter working in the education sector was unplanned – and was going to be short term, but I soon found I loved it. There is such an incredible fulfilment seeing young people reach and exceed their goals. It is wonderful to see them grow as people – such a privilege. Although it was a deviation from the plan (which was to join the Air Force). It really didn’t take long for me to realise that this is what I wanted to do – there is nothing quite like it! Q What do you think makes you different? A There are many outstanding Heads of schools out there, so I am not sure that these qualities are necessarily different, but I enjoy the fact that I came to teaching from something else, it gives me a rounded perspective on things. I have a culturally rich family background which I think helps me to understand people well. I like to think creatively and try to find avenues not yet explored. I work hard (and smart – I hope) to really make the school better for the people that pass through it. I thrive on seeing our students succeed – seeing them happy and achieving, brings me joy both professionally and personally, so work really doesn’t feel

like work – it is a very personal drive to get things right for them and achieving that is something I really enjoy. Q How was 2023 for you? A Really exciting – the school has grown

beautifully and is now full with waiting lists across multiple year groups. That has given us an opportunity to enhance and introduce new facilities. Recently we have developed the site quite significantly too and so we were able to see the impact this had on the pupils’ learning and development, which was fabulous. It’s brilliant to see the students happy! One of the things I enjoy the most is sending off all the UCAS applications for the Sixth Form and last year was superb for that too. I also graduated from UCL with an MBA and so on a personal level that made 2023 pretty great.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A There are a number of new initiatives we have in store, including launching our new ten year vision for development. We have been working with architects on some exciting plans that I hope we will be able to reveal in the not too distant future. The Sixth Form have also launched a new mentoring scheme which will be exciting to see come to fruition and we are seeing an expansion of our alumni network, which brings with it many new opportunities. Eco-schools is thriving and we are also expanding our volunteering activities which the students are involved in and as always we look forward to our whole school musical, which is just around the corner in March – always a treat. This year our production is Joseph!

herd to London working for Coopers and Lybrand, but finding the corporate world a little soulless, I decided to go into teaching which was something I had always wanted to do. Having taught at Rossall School, I moved to Hurtwood House when I married Cosmo (now Headmaster) as Hurtwood was a family business. Set up by my father-in-law 54 years ago, Hurtwood specialises exclusively in the Sixth Form and I jumped at the chance to teach nothing but A-level. Having seen a couple of Hurtwood’s West-End style theatre productions I knew there was something special about the place. I was eager to see if it really was ‘the most exciting school in England’. It is creativity which underpins Hurtwood and teaching History for 18 years I enjoyed encountering intelligent and enthusiastic students who were equally at home analysing the provenance of sources as they were role playing Mussolini. Q How was 2023 for you? A 2023 was a wonderful year and

the highlight was our 10-night extravaganza musical ‘Legally Blonde’

complete with professional musicians, choreographers and costume designers with over 90 students involved. As Head of Admissions, I now interview prospective students and it is so rewarding to watch them flourish. We are currently filming a new podcast ‘Beyond the Hill’ where ex-students come back to discuss their success and reminisce about Hurtwood. We have had West End and Hollywood stars, entrepreneurs and successful musicians returning and it has been a fun process. We are building a new medical centre this year and another recording studio in the style of the BBC’s live-lounge the next. Q On a personal level, what are

your hopes and dreams for 2024?

A On a personal front, I am looking

forward to my daughter Cassa Jackson’s new singles. A singersongwriter who studied at Hurtwood, Cassa has made me so proud as her songs have 15 million streams. I cannot wait to see what 2024 brings for her.

Q Before working at your school, what

was your working background? A My background was in Marketing. I worked for a brand development agency in London, heading up the strategy for several brands including Red Bull, Boodles and Veuve Clicquot. It was a fascinating mix of traditional and luxury brands – with real innovators in there too.

Q What inspired you to work at your school? A When I met my husband, Sid, he was Joint Headmaster at Ludgrove and I was inspired by his ability to understand what it takes to make a child flourish. Seeing children grow in ability and confidence is something to treasure; to take responsibility for that is a privilege. I was excited to join Sid and work together in building our own vision and ethos for childhood and education – one that we both take pride in at Elstree today. Q What do you think makes you different? A I believe that working so closely with Sid is what makes me different! I wholeheartedly believe in ambition to be the best you can be, to recognise

52

unique talents and to strive for individual success – these are values we encourage every day at Elstree. But, in working with my husband, I hope that we are a united front in representing the importance of family values, teamwork, respect – and good humour! Q How was 2023 for you? A 2023 was a very different

special year – it marked the 175th year of Elstree School. It is truly humbling to realise the role that Elstree has played in the lives of so many people, and it is an honour to be a part of Elstree’s story.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A This year, it is my focus to do even more to unite our community – whether that is the families who are already part of Elstree or to support the neighbourhood, charities and primary schools that are so close to us. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A To remain happy and healthy with a balanced approach to work and family. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A I can’t wait for a holiday with all my family! Sid and I have three children – and spending time together is always what I look forward to most.

Q Tell us about your background... A I have always been a hotelier; I fell

in love with the industry after doing a one-year trainee management internship with the Hilton Group after graduating from University. I have worked as Front of House Manager, in Reservations and also Meetings & Events. Making the decision to move away from operations, I studied a CIPD so that I could gain the qualification to work in the HR Department whilst working for Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai as Head of Recruitment. I then secured my first HR Manager role with the Foreign Commonwealth Office working with the British Embassy in Dubai & Abu Dhabi as Deputy HR Manager and managed over 500 employees for 6 years.

Q What did you want to work for Corus Hotels Group? A I was so motivated by the rich history of the group, they have operated hotels for many years with properties in various locations including internationally and with different formats and approaches. The group was once one of the UK’s leading hotel operators and our intention is to be transformative in the industry once again. It also really appealed to me how much they support their people, through equality and diversity.

Q What do you believe sets Corus Hotels apart? A Corus Hotels have a very unique culture, we are all about our people. We try not to cultivate a workforce but rather a community. This translates into the service people receive in our hotels, people provide personal experiences and that’s what guests want. Good hospitality isn’t about the bricks and mortar, it’s about the team that’s delivering it. Q What do you think makes you different? A My vast experience in HR has really set me up to understand people. I know how to motivate them, give feedback effectively and productively, listen and understand what people need. Life is about family, friends, health, experiences, work is just what we do to support that and I think the fact that I bear that in mind when managing my team makes it a better working environment. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Yes, 2024 is a very exciting year for us! Having nurtured over 120 hotels, it wasn’t going to be long before Corus Hotels decided to expand its horizons and dive into the hospitality management world. Immersive Hospitality Management, a new company that will take the existing Corus Hotels brand under its belt as a sub-brand of the group, will be a new pioneering force in the hospitality sector. It will share our real-world knowledge and expertise of operating, managing and owning hotels with our clients as well as expanding our own sub-brands and hotel concepts. NIMO ABDI

Q Before working at St George’s Ascot, what was your background in education? A After working in the tech and finance sectors before and during university, I decided that people were my passion and started teacher training straight after my degree. I have worked in co-ed and single sex boarding and day schools before becoming Head of St George’s in 2016. Q What inspired you to work in education? A Not everyone agrees, but I think it is a real privilege to work with teenagers; they are so interesting, energetic and creative and there is never a dull moment. It also helps to keep you feeling relevant and young! Q What do you think makes you different? A I don’t like to be a ‘distant’ Head, especially for the girls. I think they find me approachable, relatable and challenging – with a sense of fun! Q How was 2023 for you? A 2023 was our centenary year at

SGA with plenty of celebrations. The school was bought in 1923

“IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO WORK WITH TEENAGERS. THEY ARE SO INTERESTING” by a pioneering woman, Anne Loveday, and focused on an academic education for girls during a period of great change for the role of women in society. Girls at St George’s haven’t looked back since! Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A We are always looking to improve and develop and new cricket nets for the girls are our current focus as we see this sport growing in popularity. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A These tend to relate to the health and happiness of those closest to me; my children are both nearing the end of their school careers and I hope they find their next steps fulfilling and exciting. Chilli and Black Bean Mussels with Noodles Serves 6 I first made this dish during lockdown as my children were really enjoying mussels, and I decided to bulk it up with some noodles to stretch out the dish. I hold back on the amount of chilli I use in this dish for my family, but I do love the kick it adds. Preparation time: 25 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS • 1kg fresh mussels • 6 dried egg noodle nests, each weighing about 60–75g • 3 tbsp Chinese dried fermented black beans • 1 tbsp vegetable oil • 30g fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced into rounds • 6 large spring onions (scallions), 4 chopped into 7.5 cm (3 in) pieces and 2 finely sliced For garnishing • 4 large garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 large chilli, finely sliced (optional) • 2 tbsp light soy sauce • 2 tbsp sesame oil • 1 tsp sugar (optional) • 1 tbsp cornflour (cornstarch) paste • Approx. 200ml water • Salt and white pepper

METHOD To prepare the mussels, clean each one on the outside with a scourer/brush. Check for ‘beards’ around the seams, pulling them out and discarding these ‘hairy’ pieces. Throw away any ones with broken shells, they are spoiled. 2 Put the mussels in a bowl of cold water and allow to sit for about 20 minutes, so the grit can be rinsed out. Give the mussels another rinse in the bowl under a cold running tap. Then use a colander to drain off the water. Tap any unclosed mussels on the work surface: if they close, they are still alive, but otherwise discard them. 3 Prepare the noodles by rehydrating in cold water for at least 30 minutes until the strands are separable, then drain, pat dry and leave on top of some paper towels to remove excess water (you can also use fresh egg noodles). 4 Fry off the ginger and the four chopped spring onions for a couple of minutes. Add the garlic and chilli (if using) to the wok/pan and fry for about a minute until everything becomes fragrant. 5 Next, rehydrate the black 1

beans by soaking in just enough boiling water to cover them for 15 minutes, then pour off the excess water just before using. 6 Add the rehydrated black beans without the soaking water to the wok/ pan followed by the soy sauce, sesame oil and sugar (if using), and allow to simmer for a couple of minutes. Then stir in the cornflour paste. 7 Toss the mussels into the wok/ pan and add approximately 200ml (7 fl oz/scant 1 cup) of water. Cover with a lid or some tin foil and cook for at least 5 minutes, shaking the wok/pan occasionally. Keep checking to see if all the mussel shells have opened. 8 Finally, add the rehydrated noodles to the wok/pan and mix everything together. Allow to come up to the boil for a couple of minutes until the sauce is absorbed by the noodles. 9 Season to taste with salt and pepper. You may wish to add more soy sauce or sesame oil as well or even more chilli. Before serving, garnish with the sliced spring onions. • Fermented black beans (fermented soy beans) can be bought in your local Chinese supermarket or online. Make sure you don’t buy Mexican black beans, which are completely different!

Spicy Cucumber Salad Serves 4 There are many variations of a cucumber salad, here I have created a very simple no fuss recipe. You can omit the chilli oil from this cucumber salad, but I love the kick it gives it! I love adding it to rice and noodle bowls and even snacking on the pieces of cucumber straight out of the jar. Preparation time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS • Large cucumber, topped, tailed and finely sliced into circles • Salt 1 teaspoon • Sugar 1 teaspoon • Rice wine vinegar 4 teaspoons • Light soy sauce 1 teaspoon • Sesame oil 2 teaspoons • Spicy chilli oil 2 tablespoons

METHOD 1 Layer the cucumber slices on a plate and sprinkle over ½ teaspoon of salt, then add another layer of

cucumber and sprinkle with another ½ teaspoon of salt. Mix with your hand and leave for 15 minutes. 2 Strain off the liquid from the cucumber, then pat dry with a couple of pieces of paper towel to remove excess salt. Mix the sugar, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and sesame oil in a bowl to make a dressing for the salad. Toss the cucumber in the dressing, then taste and adjust the seasoning – you may want it sharper, so add more rice wine vinegar. 3 Finally, add a couple of tablespoons of homemade spicy chilli oil for extra flavour.

Coca Cola Wings Serves 2

Coca Cola was introduced to Hong Kong in the 1960s and has made its way into a couple of recipes – boiled cola with ginger and Coca Cola chicken. Coca Cola wings are one of those dishes I remember Mum making and thinking: how are we allowed to eat these, as she wouldn’t let us drink a tin of coke when we were younger! I started making these wings for my kids only recently and they are gobbled up before they even eat their rice. Cooking time: 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS Chicken wings • 1kg chicken wings, separated into wingettes and drummets • Vegetable oil, for frying • Salt and white pepper Sauce • 30g fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce • 1 tbsp light soy sauce • 3 garlic cloves, sliced • 330ml full-sugar cola

METHOD 1 Put the wingettes and drummets in a saucepan, cover with cold water and bring to the boil. Then boil for 5 minutes, skimming off the impurities or scum that float on the surface with a large spoon. Use a slotted spoon to remove the wings and keep the chicken broth for other uses. 2 To make the sauce, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan, add the ginger and garlic, then fry for about 30 seconds to start releasing the

60

aromas. Then throw in the chicken wings and brown for about 3-5 minutes to add extra flavour. 3 Now add all the remaining sauce ingredients to the wok/pan. Bring to the boil, then lower to a simmer and cover with a lid. Allow to bubble away for about 15 minutes until the liquid has reduced to a sticky sauce. 4 Toss the wings in the sticky sauce, then season to taste with salt and pepper. Bring the heat up to full again, so the sauce caramelises and coats the lovely wings.

“Coca Cola was introduced to Hong Kong in the 1960s and made its way into a couple of recipes”

Top Tips

For this recipe, you must use fullsugar cola as it is the caramelisation of the sugars that produces the thick sticky sauce. You can also use a zero or diet version of coke, but please note that the sauce will not thicken up, so add some cornflour (cornstarch) paste and boil until thickened. Any leftover cooked little wings freeze well and can be kept for a month in the freezer.

HEALTH & BEAUTY • SLEEP

S L E E P T I G H T Having trouble sleeping? The team at Zen Health Foods suggest five foods to aid a good night’s rest

G

etting enough sleep and sleeping well is hugely important for health. Ongoing sleep problems can lead to a multitude of problems, including poor concentration, memory lapses, irritability, fatigue, dull skin, weight gain… the list goes on. If you’re having trouble sleeping, these five foods may help you to drop off into a restful slumber:

NUTS Almonds – and other nuts like walnuts, cashews and pistachios – are considered to be a good food for sleep. This is because nuts are a rich source of the sleep hormone melatonin, and almonds are an especially good food source of melatonin. Melatonin regulates your internal clock and signals your body to prepare for sleep. Almonds are also an excellent source of magnesium, which is additionally important for sleep.

BANANAS Ever felt sleepy after eating a banana? Bananas are another excellent source of magnesium, which could be why. They’re also a good food source of potassium, which can help with night cramps and, as with magnesium, relax muscles, making it easier for you to drift off and stay asleep.

TURKEY Turkey is a great source of protein, which may also contribute to its ability to promote tiredness. There’s evidence that consuming moderate amounts of protein before bed is associated with better sleep quality, including less waking up throughout the night.

KIWI According to some studies kiwis may be one of the best foods to eat before bedtime. In one 4-week study, 24 adults consumed two kiwifruits one hour before going to bed each night. At the end of the study, participants fell asleep 42% more quickly than when

they didn’t eat anything before bedtime. Additionally, their ability to sleep through the night without waking improved by 5%, while their total sleep time increased by 13%.

OATS Oats are a rich source of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that support the production of sleep-inducing melatonin, including tryptophan. Oats also have a moderate glycaemic index, especially when compared to other cereal products, and can help to balance blood sugar levels. Balanced blood sugar levels will support the parasympathetic nervous system and allow for a calmer night’s sleep. One last pearl of sleep-enhancing wisdom: remember not to eat or drink any foods too close to bedtime, as that can cause digestive issues, such as acid reflux. French Girl Brow part from the disaster of over-plucking my eyebrows in the noughties, I confess I’ve never worried too much about my browline. However, everything has a tendency to droop as we get older (a cheerful thought), as Dr Surbhi Virmani points out when I visit her clinic in London. Renowned for offering state-of-the-art treatments, she has pioneered ‘The French Girl Brow’ method – which offers the opposite appearance of the over-pulled ‘Fox Brow’ of the past. After taking some images of my face, we sit down to discuss a treatment plan. Dr Surbhi has various methods in her arsenal – including inserting MONO thread fibres around the eyebrow area and using Botox. However, we agree on a gentle approach, using targeted ultrasound to help lift my brow and minimise the lines on my forehead. Dr Surbhi measures my face before I lie back on the bed. The ultrasound waves tingle a little, but are not painful. Harnessing the gentle yet effective power of the bands of energy, the aim is to reinvigorate the area and work very precisely around the eyebrows triggering my body to signal my cells to create collagen. After the treatment, Dr Surbhi measures my face again and the results are impressive. After just one treatment there’s already a 1mm lift and my brow is more symmetrical.

Pre + Postnatal Movement and Total Body Resistance (TRX), Catie started Barre Series as a reaction to the high-intensity interval training everywhere in the fitness industry. Redefining what a Barre class can feel like, her approach blends ballet, Pilates and cardio to help you sculpt your body without burning it out. Catie bounds out of the studio to greet me. She has such a warm and lovely energy, and she invites me to choose some light hand weights and a mat. The class feels cosy, and it's not long before we're all flowing together – pliéing, relevéing, and sautéing. I find it easy to follow along, and Catie helps me with my form as the

class progresses. Cardio, abs, and core-work focus on small, but effective movements and I definitely feel the burn. What I really love about the class though is how welcoming everybody is. Chatting after class, Catie tells me: "At Barre Series, we take pride not only in our dynamically curated classes, but also in fostering an engaging community of like-minded members who contribute to the resilience and shared success of every individual on their wellness path." And it's this that makes me want to come back to one of Catie's classes soon. In person classes £30 per session, see more at barreseries.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

any homeowners are now looking to furnish their homes whilst reducing their carbon footprint. Embracing the beauty of reclaimed materials not only adds a distinctive charm, but it also contributes to a more ecofriendly lifestyle. Home Barn is at the forefront of this movement, and has provided an innovative outlet to showcase their combined love of vintage and reclaimed finds from around the world. Home Barn, based in Marlow, was founded by Sally and Sarah Wilkie, and here the former tells Absolutely how the two came together to embrace the beauty of the past.

A Sarah and I had always envisioned running our own business. Even when we lived in different countries, we would talk about sending antiques to each other to sell in the opposite country. However, it wasn’t until I moved back to the UK and our children started school that we felt the timing was right. It was a realisation that our shared passion for creating something extraordinary could be fulfilled through Home Barn. Q Was it challenging to get things off the ground? A Building Home Barn has been an organic journey that

has taken us 14 years to reach where we are today. We intentionally grew our business at a pace that aligned with our lives and families. After leaving the corporate world behind, I wanted to create a business that allowed us the freedom to embrace our passions while prioritising our loved ones.

SWIM A B E Y O N D Spring is a time of change and nothing says a new lifestyle direction more than an Origin indoor pool

s we embrace the change of seasons, the landscape comes alive with the promise of spring. Traditionally, this time of year signals new beginnings, as we all look ahead and prepare for the upcoming summer months. However, when you live in the UK you know sun is not always a certainty, but an Origin indoor swimming pool makes it feel like summer all year round and provides limitless fun, entertainment and swimming no matter the weather. Moving forward into the warmer months, a lot of us will be spending more time with family and enjoying days in the garden. Doesn’t it make sense to release the potential of unused parts of your garden and maximise the outdoor space you do have?

Origin specialises in creating bespoke indoor pools tailored to you and your family’s needs, whether you plan on using your pool for fun, fitness, or relaxation. Whatever you want to achieve, Origin can transform your dreams into reality with a personalised approach. Exercise is a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle, and swimming is an activity which benefits individuals of all ages. Beyond the immediate enjoyment it brings, swimming offers many health advantages. It can help manage long-term conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and dementia. Additionally, it's a powerful tool for promoting mental well-being. Absolutely dives deeper into a unique creation by Conrad Designer Bathrooms that has a real luxury Italian tinge to it

W

hen James Dally founded Conrad Designer Bathrooms in 2010, he wanted clients to have the breathtaking spa facilities and the chic bathroom interiors they’d find at luxury hotels in their very own homes – and this stunning example shows exactly what the Conrad Designer Bathrooms team can do. The property in question was a Grade II listed home, dating back to the 15th century. James first met the property owners 18 months before the project started, shortly after planning permission was given to repurpose some of the existing rooms. The initial plans created by the architect had missed some minor details that would have had a big impact on

94

the internal design of the bathroom. The team, in collaboration with the builders, re-designed the internal space to overcome both aesthetic and physical issues with the initial design. Eighteen months later, after exploring lots of different products and design ideas, James and the rest of the team at Conrad Designer Bathrooms came up with a final design which was created into a photo realistic render that was then signed off by the client. The team then set to work spending the next five weeks converting what was once the master bedroom into a space that is now the centrepiece of this luxury country home. This involved re-plumbing the whole room, installing a new waste system, re-positioning/ rebuilding walls, re-plaster boarding, plastering, decorating, installing electrics, carpentry and more.

“The dark veins as with most marbles make every piece unique” VIVA L’ITALIA The bathroom design has been inspired by the owners’ Italian roots, whilst also being sympathetic to the traditional design of the house. When looking at Italian design, certain elements like the marble tiles and basin are a must, as opposed to travertine and limestone which are typically not seen in Italian designs. Italian designs are opulent, so gold accessories and brassware are regularly featured, the general colour palette is often warm/golden sometimes featuring pink marbles. Calacatta Gold, which is the most expensive marble in the world and only comes from a small region of Italy, was considered, however the client preferred the softer warmth of the Rosa Antico Marble, which also has a slightly pinky hew. All of the brassware is handmade unlacquered brass, whilst the tiles are free length marble tiles (meaning they are random in length). The tiles have a general golden undertone with hints of pink, making it less clinical when compared with a Carrara Marble (white). The dark veins, as with most marbles, makes every piece unique, especially the worktop. The bathroom also boasts a large freestanding bath, underfloor heating, a wall hung WC and bespoke walk-in wet room.

LIGHTING THE WAY In a bathroom the two most important elements are, one, your wall finishes (tiles), and two, your lighting that will inevitably show off these tiles, as well as being able to create different ambiences depending upon your mood. The bathroom also includes subtle mood lighting behind the bath, under the basin and also mood lighting in the wet room shower.

THE RESULT Both the client and the Conrad Designer Bathrooms team were thrilled with the outcome. The client’s review as seen on Google says: “James is a highly talented bathroom designer and fitter. We have installed three bathrooms with disservices over the last two years and all of the jobs presented challenges which were ably overcome. We live in an ancient house, plumbing is always a challenge, but that combined with wonky walls and large oak beams makes installation in our period home not an easy job and to be successful real attention to detail is required; James is that person. We had innovative design, thorough and regular design and planning meetings, quality workmanship and incredible attention to detail.” conraddesignerbathrooms.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

REJUVENATION Absolutely looks at the top 5 trends for creating a sanctuary-like bathroom

T

hebathroom, onceautilitarian space, has transformed into a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation. In 2024, bathroom design trends in the UK continue to evolve, driven by a blend of technological advancements, sustainability concerns, and a desire for comfort and luxury. Here are the top five trends shaping UK bathrooms in 2024.

SMART TECHNOLOGY In the age of smart homes, it's no surprise that bathrooms are becoming increasingly intelligent. Smart technology integration in UK bathrooms is a dominant trend in 2024. From voice-activated fixtures to sensor-controlled lighting and temperature-regulated showers, homeowners are embracing the convenience and efficiency offered by these innovations. Voice-activated assistants, like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, are seamlessly integrated into bathroom mirrors or vanity units, allowing users to control various functions hands-free. Additionally, sensorbased faucets and toilets not only enhance hygiene, but also contribute to water conservation efforts, a crucial consideration in today's environmentally-conscious society.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ELEMENTS Sustainability remains a key driver in bathroom design, with eco-friendly materials and watersaving fixtures gaining prominence in UK homes. In 2024, there's a notable emphasis on incorporating sustainable design elements without compromising style or functionality. Recycled and upcycled materials, such as reclaimed wood for vanities, are increasingly popular choices for environmentally-conscious homeowners. These materials not only add character and uniqueness to the space, but also reduce the carbon footprint associated with traditional manufacturing processes.

“The bathroom as a sanctuary drives design trends in 2024” MINIMALIST AND SPA-LIKE RETREATS The concept of the bathroom as a sanctuary continues to drive design trends in 2024, with a focus on creating minimalist, spa-like retreats that promote relaxation and well-being. Clean lines, clutter-free surfaces, and calming colour palettes define the aesthetic of contemporary UK bathrooms. Free-standing bathtubs take centre stage, evoking a sense of luxury and serenity. Paired with sleek, wall-mounted faucets and minimalistic hardware, these statement pieces become focal points within the space. Natural elements, such as stone accents or indoor plants, add warmth and tranquillity, further enhancing the spa-like ambiance. A focus on simplicity and functionality reigns supreme in creating a tranquil oasis within the confines of the bathroom.

WELLNESS-ORIENTED FEATURES As wellness takes centre stage in lifestyle trends, UK bathrooms in 2024 are embracing features that promote health and relaxation. From hydrotherapy showers to integrated aromatherapy systems, homeowners are seeking ways to enhance their daily routines with wellness-oriented amenities. Hydrotherapy showers, equipped with massage jets and customizable settings, offer

therapeutic benefits for both the body and mind. These advanced shower systems allow users to personalise their experience, catering to individual preferences and needs. Aromatherapy diffusers integrated into ventilation systems or showerheads release fragrances that promote relaxation and stress relief, transforming the bathroom into a sensory retreat.

STATEMENT LIGHTING FIXTURES Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the ambiance and mood of a bathroom, and in 2024, statement lighting fixtures emerge as a prominent trend. From sleek LED strips to elegant pendant lights, homeowners are incorporating bold lighting elements to add drama and personality to their spaces. Oversized pendant lights suspended above vanities or free-standing tubs make a striking visual statement while providing functional task lighting. LED mirrors with integrated backlighting offer both practical illumination and a touch of modern elegance. Additionally, dimmable lighting systems allow users to adjust the intensity and colour temperature according to their preferences, creating customizable lighting scenarios tailored to different activities, whether it's a bright, energising light for morning routines or a soft, warm glow for evening relaxation. arpe Diem Beds is the designer brand that creates unique and well-designed bedroom environments you never want to leave. And to enhance your bedroom's b e a u t y, t h e c l a s s i c houndstooth pattern associated with Christian Dior and Jackie Kennedy, is part of a limited Design Edition that fuses French luxury with Carpe Diem Beds’ Swedish heritage for a perfect blend of chic aesthetics and top-modern Swedish craftsmanship. Carpe Diem Beds has been developing beds for over 25 years with the goal of creating a feeling of near weightlessness and amazing comfort. The founder, Börje Thuleskär, used knowledge from his chiropractor profession and collaborated with the Spinal Unit at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg to lay the foundation for the first models and Carpe Diem Beds' patented Contour Pocket System. Carpe Diem Beds is much more than a bed, it is a lifestyle brand that puts focus on the entire design experience. The beds are designed to be as beautiful to look at as they are comfortable. A complete design experience for the bedroom that allows you to create an individual retreat in which you can relax completely. Now the French world of fashion is united with the beautiful and natural Swedish aura that Carpe Diem Beds represents. The Design Edition is inspired by Carpe Diem Beds' Swedish heritage and the graphic tones characterising the nature around the country’s west coast, and the exclusive feeling reinforced by the classic houndstooth patterned textile with strong roots in French fashion houses like

Christian Dior. An elegant and timeless classic that never goes out of style – the perfect match with Carpe Diem Beds' soul and range. “With this Design Edition in the classic houndstooth pattern, we combine qualities from the world of fashion with high recognition that exudes the same timeless and at the same time eternally modern design, with our vision of a bedroom so appealing, timeless, and elegant that you never want to leave it,” says Rui France, Store Manager at the Marylebone Flagship store. The Swedish sleep experts have devised a whole philosophy centered around the bedroom environment, based on the principle that the whole space should be designed as a holistic concept dedicated to the art of sleep. This philosophy comes to life at their Wigmore Street showroom, where they offer a Sleep Consultation to help you create a personalised sleep environment. This involves much more than just choosing a mattress. The store is dedicated to optimising the bedroom environment to create an oasis of calm, and visitors can experience the company’s ethos first hand under the guidance of manger Rui Franca. And while choosing the perfect mattress for you is at the heart of the experience, there’s a strong focus on bedroom design and streamlining, so that the bed you choose can be enclosed in an environment that’s conducive to optimum sleep health. In addition to the design edition of the Sandö continental bed, the classic French pattern also adorns a dog bed, throw pillows, and footstool/pouffe, too. ARTFULLY WALLS

Off the WALL It can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks, but what to do if you’re in a hurry? Go online, of course By PENDLE HARTE

G

allery walls have been a major trend for several years now. But of course hanging pictures on your walls was a thing long before anyone came up with the idea of a gallery wall. And while some people naturally acquire things they like and frame them, others don’t know where to start. Realistically, it can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks and who has time for that? Art lover and tech visionary Cathy Glazer came up with a solution. Her online gallery Artfully Walls is dedicated to providing something for everyone, with all tastes catered for with the same approach to high quality printing and framing. It’s a carefully curated yet vast and diverse archive of artworks of all kinds, where everything can be bought in a variety of sizes, with several framing options, and each piece is printed

to order as a museum quality fine art print with archival inks on premium paper and canvas. It’s a seemingly infinite resource, and its genius lies not only in Cathy’s professional eye for quality, but in the technology that organises an enormous body of work into a searchable library. When faced with thousands of potential pictures, even the most decisive person is likely to feel exhausted. And where to begin? Searching by artist is an obvious starting point, but only for someone who knows artists that they like. Maybe medium? So you might search photography, say, or watercolour, or collage, or illustration. This is where Artfully Walls comes into its own. You might search something more abstract, such as, say ‘abstract’ or ‘landscape’ or ‘portrait’. You might like cats and search that, or seascapes, or architectural drawings, or botanical images. You might want something that’s mostly red to go with your

sofa. You might want something traditional, or something experimental. Each image is so precisely tagged and categorised that searches are impressively accurate. Alternatively, the archive includes a large series of designer picks, where people from all over the world with an eye for design offer up their own gallery walls for inspiration. Most of us don’t have tastes that are entirely consistent, and these walls show how pieces can work together even if they wouldn’t be classified together by any algorithm. All of this data creates an excellent resource for analysing trends too. Current demand shows a diversity of popular choices, with lots of searches for Greek and Roman motifs, as well as 18th century oil paintings. Linocuts are in vogue, as are portraits. You heard it here first. artfullywalls.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

GREENER Life Keen to go green? Good Energy can help

S

ustainability is at the forefront of people’s minds, and how you heat your home can make a big difference to your own carbon footprint. Good Energy has been helping households to enjoy a greener life for almost a quarter of a century, originally supplying 100 per cent renewable electricity to homes and businesses, but recently expanding into the installation of domestic heat pumps and solar panels too. They source their power from a UK network of more than 2,000 renewable generators including solar farms, wind turbines and hydroelectric projects. Last year they exported a huge amount of clean energy to the grid – enough to power almost 230,000 average houses for a whole year and preventing the emission of almost 120,000 tonnes of carbon. One of the best ways for households to cut their carbon emissions and cut costs is to switch to a heat pump. Grants of £7,500 are available, and there are proposals for them to be the default option for all new homes by 2025. However, a big challenge is the level of misinformation around their installation and operation. Good Energy commissioned Opinium to

survey a sample of South East residents on a wide range of topics around sustainability and found 14 per cent wrongly believe a heat pump is louder than a fridge, ten per cent wrongly believe they only work in newer homes, and eight per cent wrongly believe they don’t work in the cold. Good Energy is campaigning to combat these myths and show that heat pumps are not loud and can work well in older homes. What’s more, they’re four times as efficient as traditional gas boilers and provide consistent warmth throughout the day. Most homes have traditionally been heated by oil or gas, but these polluting and expensive fossil fuels are exposed to the volatilities of the international energy markets. Heat pumps use electricity instead – which is increasingly sourced from UK renewable sources – and are therefore the perfect alternative, particularly for off-grid properties with oil or LPG tanks. Good Energy offers bespoke systems designed around your home, covering new-builds, retrofits and period properties, supported by 10-year warranties and remote monitoring capabilities for long-term reassurance. Check out the ‘Green home stories’ on Good Energy’s website – featuring customers who have already saved money on their bills – and their ‘ten myths about air source heat pumps busted’. You’ll also find their ‘Meet the Generators’ series of films, which throw the spotlight on their partners across the country who are providing us with truly renewable energy. Good Energy can support your journey towards a cleaner and greener future. For more information visit goodenergy.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Sanctuary How to create a clutter-free bathroom, with a Ripples bathroom design specialist

O

ur bathrooms deserve to be a place of calm and serenity and with hectic lives often getting in the way, this can be a difficult thing to maintain. Here Senior Designer Leanne, from Ripples Newbury, shares her five top tips for creating an organised and beautiful bathroom.

“A top tip is to include strategic shelving within your bathroom”

ASSESS YOUR STORAGE SPACE Think about the space at your disposal and where your storage falls short. Knowing which areas may need extra thought before starting with the organisation process will help you understand what you need to do and what it is you are trying to accomplish.

SORT IT OUT Another step to consider before planning how you are going to organise your room is to sort through your bathroom items. Purging the contents of your bathroom will allow you to ascertain exactly what you need. To do this, make three piles: keep, recycle and donate. Once you have decided what to keep these can then be sub-categorised for sorting.

CONTAIN CLUTTER If you find that clutter tends to creep onto surface areas, like your vanity unit, find a designated place to contain it. Try using stylish trays to display your favourite bath and body products and using pretty baskets to keep rolled-up towels.

MAKE THE MOST OF DRAWER SPACE What is more satisfying than opening a drawer to find neatly packed containers, each with its own purpose? Think make-up in one, soaps in another and spare toiletries in a third compartment. If you can name it, there’s a storage solution for it.

MAXIMISE YOUR CUPBOARDS If storage space is the issue, there are ways to get around it. Rotating trays are making a comeback and will increase storage capacity in the smallest of cupboards. They’re also handy for seeing all your products at once, rather than losing products at the back of the drawer which you end up accidentally rebuying. Another top tip is to include strategic shelving within your bathroom. These can even be mounted on the back of your door but be careful not to overfill them, so they remain a pleasure to look at. utensils is preferred to create a paredback, minimalist aesthetic. For others, kitchens are the ideal opportunity to display their favourite crockery and glassware. Installing glass kitchen cabinets, alongside traditional cabinet doors, provides an innovative approach to create points of interest in a kitchen – resulting in a perfect balance of artistry and functionality. Efficiency meets elegance with concealed organisation solutions. For tall, narrow cupboards or corner compartments, cleverly integrated storage means awkward, unused corners are a thing of the past. LEIGHTON PARK SCHOOL

CHANGING COURSE National Offer Day is a key moment in a child's (and parents’) educational journey. Here’s all you need to know about it

N

ational Offer Day is a highly anticipated and nerve-wracking event for thousands of families across the UK. This annual event, typically occurring in early March, marks the day when parents and students receive the crucial information about secondary school placements for the upcoming academic year. For many parents and their children, National Offer Day is a pivotal moment that can significantly impact their lives. It is the day when the local education authorities announce the secondary school places allocated to each student based on their preferences and the admission criteria of the chosen schools.

NATIONAL OFFER DAY CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR ALL

The process begins months in advance, with families submitting their preferences for schools in the preceding autumn. The anticipation leading up to National Offer Day is palpable, as families eagerly await the news that will shape their child’s educational journey. Parents may have researched and visited multiple schools, considering factors such as academic reputation, extra-curricular activities, and the overall ethos of the institution. The culmination of these efforts and preferences manifests in the allocation of school places on National Offer Day. When the day arrives, parents often gather around computers or smartphones, anxiously waiting for the clock to strike a designated time when

the information will be released. Local authorities employ various methods to communicate the results, including online portals, email, or traditional mail. The tension in the air is palpable as families discover whether their child has secured a place at their preferred school or if they have been allocated an alternative option. For some, National Offer Day brings a sense of relief and joy as they learn that their child will attend the desired school. However, for others, it may be a moment of disappointment and uncertainty if the allocated school was not one of their top choices. This can be particularly challenging if the assigned school is geographically distant or doesn’t align with the family’s educational values. In recent years, the demand for A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Offering advice Two local schools on how they can help during this testing time The Webber Independent School webberindependentschool.com You can apply to The Webber Independent School regardless of catchment area. Set adjacent to Linford Wood, Milton Keynes, central to both the M1 and A5, The Webber hosts a thriving learning environment for children aged 6 months to 16 years. Parents choose The Webber because they feel their state offer is not the best fit for their child and are delighted with its personalised, individualised education of class sizes of 20 or less. THE WEBBER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

“Today, National Offer Day is an even more pivotal event, with emotions running high for both parents and students alike”

Senior Deputy Head and Head of Prep School, Kevin Wills, says: "If you don’t receive your first choice, first things first, try not to panic! There are various routes of redress, including requesting to be added to the waiting list at your preferred school and even appealing the decision. Given the time elapsed since having to submit preferences in October, you may even find that the school place offered now better meets your needs. Also, where finances allow, consider moving from the state sector to a local independent school. While many operate waiting lists for places, relocations mean that spaces do sometimes become available, so it is always worth asking the question. Independent schools typically have much smaller class sizes than state schools, which enables more individualised learning and support."

Leighton Park School leightonpark.com

certain schools has intensified, leading to increased competition for limited spaces. This has made National Offer Day an even more pivotal event, with emotions running high for both parents and students alike. The process is designed to be fair, with admission criteria based on factors such as proximity to the school, siblings already attending, and any special educational needs. In the aftermath of National Offer Day, there is often a period for families to consider their options. Some may choose to appeal the decision, especially if they feel there were exceptional circumstances that were not initially considered.

Others may explore alternative schools or make arrangements for transportation to the assigned school if it is not in close proximity. National Offer Day highlights the broader challenges within the education system, including the need for sufficient school places, equitable access to quality education, and ongoing efforts to address the diverse needs of students. As this annual event unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of education in shaping the future of young minds and the role that parents and communities play in advocating for the best possible opportunities for their children.

A lot can change between your application and National Offer Day. If you are concerned that your allocated state school might not work for you after all, you could consider an appeal or perhaps look at the independent sector. Head of Leighton Park School, winner of the ISA’s Independent Senior School of the Year 2023-24, Matthew Judd says: “We don’t try to be like other schools. Our starting point is to nurture each young person to really think about who they are and what they want to achieve. From there we do everything we can to support them to succeed as themselves – true to who they are and all the more remarkable for it.” To see what a difference a Leighton Park education could make for your family, their next open morning is on 15 March.

Exciting events, activities and partnerships will encourage more children to enjoy reading, however they choose to, this World Book Day

he charity World Book Day is holding its annual celebration on Thursday 7 March right across the UK and Ireland. World Book Day 2024 will celebrate that children are more likely to enjoy reading when their choices are championed and we make reading fun. Reading for pleasure improves children’s life chances across a range of social, educational and well-being measures. However, research from the National Literacy Trust found that fewer than 1 in 2 (47.8%) children now say they enjoy reading; this is the lowest level since 2005, and reading enjoyment is lowest among children from disadvantaged backgrounds. Read Your Way calls on everyone to let go of pressure and expectations, giving children a choice – and a chance – to enjoy reading. Young voices are at the heart of the campaign, with World Book Day’s selection of £1 books chosen with the help of children,

while children’s everyday reading lives are brought to life through the dynamic imagery of World Book Day illustrator Vivian Truong. Also, 2024 will see the launch and evolution of a number of new exciting partnerships, including new ways to fundraise, to ensure more children and families can experience and benefit from the joy of reading. Cassie Chadderton, CEO of World Book Day, says: “Our aim for World Book Day 2024 is to bring the fun of reading to more children, to celebrate their choices and encourage everyone to Read Their Way. Fewer children and their families are enjoying reading, just when the lifechanging benefits are needed most.” She continues: “The World Book Day £1 authors and illustrators will be out and about at bookshops, libraries and schools across the country encouraging children to read for pleasure and we’re excited that a fantastic array of partners and supporters are making it easier than ever to get involved with activities, fundraising or simply choosing a £1 book for free with our tokens.”

WORLD BOOK DAY EVENTS Funded by Julia and Hans Rausing, World Book Day is working with 20 libraries in highdeprived areas with low literacy levels to help create a legacy around reading for pleasure. Libraries in areas where there is limited access to retailers/bookshops will welcome local children to swap their £1 book tokens for books, followed by an exciting event in spring, to inspire local families to continue enjoying reading together long after the day itself. In 2024, a massive 105,000 books are being distributed through a range of supporters and partners, including working with BookTrust’s network of 6,000 local organisations to get the £1 book tokens into some of the country’s most disadvantaged communities. Alongside events, 24,000 books will be distributed through prisons to help families read together, while 43,750 books will be shared across 17 National Literacy Hubs and over 100 football clubs to support book ownership in areas of high deprivation and low literacy. “OUR AIM FOR WORLD BOOK DAY IS TO BRING THE FUN OF READING TO MORE CHILDREN”

BOOKSHOP TOUR Every single World Book Day £1 author (and some illustrators) will be at their local bookshop sometime between 15 February and 8 March. Over 400 independent bookshops and retailers across the UK and Ireland including The Works, WHSmith, Waterstones, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda will be welcoming children, families, schools, and local communities to have fun choosing a free book with their £1 token to discover more wonderful ways to read.

FUNDRAISING PARTNERSHIPS Contemporary jeweller Tatty Devine has created a 16-piece jewellery collection, inspired by some of its favourite books, authors, and genres. Launched on 25 January, 10% from each piece sold will be donated to World Book Day. Vintage-style fashion brand Joanie have created two collaboration pieces for the charity, donating £5 from each

sale of its TOBY sweatshirt and £10 from each sale of its TALLY dress from its collection to World Book Day this year. Amscan International Ltd will launch a new collection of World Book Day-themed costumes from classic fairytales, with 5% from every sale going to support the charity’s work. Sales of a new World Book Day celebration pack from Party Delights will also give a 5% donation to the charity. Children in schools across the country will also be able to enjoy a book-themed menu and activity sheet, thanks to school catering provider Green Gourmet. Jigsaw Education Group are producing free resources based on their Jigsaw Outdoors programme (as part of their bigger Jigsaw PSHE programme) which are World Book Day themed, encouraging active engagement with reading outdoors, at both school and home. beyond Why academic excellence at Reddam School is important in shaping your child’s future, fit for the 21st century workplace

I

n an era marked by rapid technological advancements and evolving global landscapes, the importance of education has never been more evident. Parents and students alike are increasingly recognising the need to future-proof their educational journeys by choosing institutions that prioritise academic excellence. Selecting a school that goes beyond conventional teaching methods and embraces innovation becomes crucial for preparing students for the challenges of the future. Academic excellence is more than just high grades; it encompasses a holistic approach to learning that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and adaptability. As the world continues to change at an unprecedented pace, the ability to navigate complex problems and acquire new skills is becoming essential for success in various fields. Reddam House in Berkshire is known for its high level of attainment of all pupils and a forward-thinking curriculum. The school, teaching children from three months to 18 years, has been awarded ‘outstanding’ in a recent ISI report, and seeks to consistently embrace excellence in everything, focusing on the individual student so they are fully prepared for a fast changing world.

EDUCATION • PARTNERSHIP

Technology is an important part of the forward-thinking curriculum at Reddam House. The use of interactive learning platforms which enhance the power of AI, virtual classrooms, and educational apps not only engages students, but also prepares them for a workforce that relies heavily on technology. Being part of a group of world-class schools gives pupils at Reddam House an advantage, offering the opportunity to connect via virtual environments across the world and across time zones. For example, they have led science and geography lessons with students from Reddam, Switzerland, Mexico and New Zealand via their own private metaverse using VR headsets. The school is also forward-thinking in its integration of AI in the curriculum via Inspired AI, and Computer Science is embedded in the curriculum from Year 1 to A-level, and all students have their own device from Year 4 up. When choosing a school with a focus on academic excellence, it’s also essential to consider extra-curricular activities. With knowledge an ever-decreasing commodity of value, young people need to develop their rounded selves and the best schools offer this alongside academic excellence.

Set in 125 acres of beautiful woodland, Reddam House has plenty of space for children to explore their passions – whether that’s with the outdoor adventure department, in the swimming pool, after-school clubs, professional level theatre, or brand new sports hall. The school offers an impressive range of extra-curricular activities to ensure learning is extended beyond the classroom. Nurturing creative thought and preparing children for a world that requires courage, resilience and flexibility is a huge focus at Reddam House. In the early years and Junior School, the curriculum is structured to give lots of open-ended activities, focusing on risk-taking, reflection, and initiative. It’s all about the development of a ‘growth mindset’, encouraging the idea that hard work and determination can overcome barriers. This helps to prepare children for an everchanging world – where flexibility is key. Schools that prioritise critical thinking create an atmosphere where students learn to question, explore, and develop a deep understanding of the subjects they study. This approach prepares students to face the uncertainties of the future job market, where adaptability and analytical skills are highly valued.

From the nursery school right through to sixth form at Reddam House, children are encouraged to become creative and critical thinkers who can learn independently. In the reception classes, children are the protagonists for their in depth project work, which challenges them on a daily basis. Reddam House offers a rigorous academic, creative and sporting education, as well as extra pursuits including ranks within CCF and Duke of Edinburgh Awards to help pupils stand out. Academic support and encouragement is provided at every stage to help children achieve their aspirations. In conclusion, choosing a school with a focus on academic excellence involves evaluating ambition and commitment to technology integration, critical thinking, personal development, and creativity. A forward-thinking school recognises the dynamic nature of the world and prepares students not just to meet the challenges of today, but also to excel in the uncertainties of tomorrow. By prioritising a holistic approach to education, parents can ensure that their children are well-equipped to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of the future. reddamhouse.org.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Reindeer run STEM ahead In a bid to get more girls studying STEM subjects at GCSE and beyond, Berkhamsted ran a STEM Speed Networking event where girls met with professionals in the STEM field to learn more about what a STEM career looks like and what it takes to get there. Since women make up just over one-quarter of the UK’s Science, Tech, Engineering, and Maths workforce, Berkhamsted Girls is countering the outdated narrative that females don’t belong in STEM roles, from creating a group of STEM Ambassadors in Sixth Form to hosting a Physics Fun Club for Year 8 girls. Most recently, their senior girls met influential individuals in STEM at a speed networking event, hearing from keynote speakers Thomas Faulkner and Zoe Nicholls, who study and work in Civil Engineering. Zoe’s speech was particularly inspiring since she was in the audience’s shoes not so long ago. “I studied at Berkhamsted from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form,” Zoe told the crowd. “I’m now a Structural Engineering and Architecture MA student at Sheffield University.” berkhamsted.com

While Santa’s reindeer may be long gone for another year, their lasting effects from one event in Windsor will be felt for some time to come, as it was confirmed that the Thames Hospice Reindeer Run which took place at St George’s School Windsor Castle raised a staggering £8,230 for the charity. More than 180 children from Years 3-8 braved the cold and damp weather to take part in the sponsored cross-country run on Thursday 7 December. Students were able to elect from three different distances ranging from 2.5km to 5km around Windsor Castle’s Home Park Private. “It was a tremendous feat,” says Patrick Wright, Director of Sport at St George’s School Windsor Castle. “The children put in an incredible amount of effort, in spite of the weather, to raise this incredible sum for a very worthwhile cause.” stgwindsor.org

Driving on In February, to coincide with the half term school holidays, TeamSport Reading hosted a Discover Your Drive Day: a fun and engaging first experience of karting for girls aged 8-12 years. Discover Your Drive Karting UK is a national programme acting as a gateway to motorsport, making young girls more aware of the opportunities available and removing the barriers that often inhibit them from competing. Discover Your Drive Days were delivered by skilled TeamSport Chief Instructors, trained by Motorsport UK, the national governing body for motorsport in the UK. The day aims to leave girls feeling confident in a kart and wanting to continue. Girls needed no previous experience of

karting or motorsport to participate and were supported throughout the day by the Instructors and TeamSport staff. If any girls show potential talent after the initial Discover Your Drive Day, they will be invited to learn more about the Discover Your Drive Race Academy, a series of five progressive instructor-led sessions. team-sport.co.uk/dyd
