n early memory I have of the sea was on a holiday abroad where all the family paid for a scuba diving trip. I think it was great – I say I think, within two minutes of going underwater I panicked and signalled to be taken back to shore. Perhaps that experience paved the way for my uneasy feeling towards the sea. So much of it remains undiscovered that it freaks me out a little, and I always feel a little queasy when watching videos about shipwrecks (which doesn't really tally with my fascination of the Titanic). Perhaps I needed an upbringing where the water was second nature, such as at local school York House. This month we go behind the scenes to see how water-based activities are helping students to learn about the world. Back on dry land, where I feel much more comfortable, we present Absolutely Home. Give me a sofa to sink into any day of the week.

CULTURE • PARTNERSHIP MARK GATISS AS SIR JOHN GIELGUD

CLASH of the

TITANS Why The Motive and the Cue has taken theatreland by storm, with a host of big names involved

TUPPENCE MIDDLETON AS ELIZABETH TAYLOR AND JOHNNY FLYNN AS RICHARD BURTON

It certainly is. It’s also funny and revealing, in part thanks to performances by Gatiss, Johnny Flynn, who plays Burton, and Tuppence Middleton as Taylor, that really get under their characters’ skins. Combined with Mendes’ sweeping, cinematic direction and a design by Es Devlin that moves the action from monochrome rehearsal rooms to the bright lights of sophisticated New York, the play unfolds like a beautifully fashioned sequence of boxes. As Burton and Gielgud battle with their own demons, Thorne, Mendes and the actors offer an insight into theatre itself – the way it uses artifice to reveal the deepest truths about human nature. It’s an astonishing night out. themotiveandthecue.com

PHOTOS: MICHAEL WHARLEY

T

he Motive and the Cue is a love letter to the theatre – and to the people who make it. Jack Thorne’s wonderful play takes as its starting point the famous production of Hamlet on Broadway in 1964, when the Welsh actor Richard Burton took on the role of Shakespeare’s prince. Burton was absolutely at the height of his fame; his marriage to Elizabeth Taylor had made the front pages around the world. The director of the production was Sir John Gielgud, another theatrical great, once the most celebrated Hamlet of his day, but out of favour and out of fashion. The two men – one longing to show he was a serious actor, and one hoping to find a new wave of success – clashed about just about everything, with Taylor watching from the wings like a wise angel. But out of their arguments, faithfully recorded by two other actors who sensed they were living through history, came a production that set the record for performances of Shakespeare on Broadway. From this story, Thorne and director Sam Mendes have fashioned a play that has moved rapidly from the stage of the National Theatre, where it opened in April last year, to the Noel Coward Theatre in the West End, where it is drawing huge and appreciative audiences for a limited run that ends on 23 March. Its remarkable success is based on the fact that its themes extend far beyond its ostensible subject. As Mark Gatiss, who is playing Gielgud, said in a recent interview: “It’s a tribute to the play that it has managed to appeal to audiences who aren’t obsessed with theatrical history, as well as those who are. What they get, I guess, is these two titanic figures having a battle of wills and then finding this moment when they come together. It’s very moving.”

KNOCKOUT OPENING FIVE BELLS BAR & DINING

One of Berkhamsted’s oldest and most famous pubs is being brought back to life, more than 150 years since serving its last pint, by Hertfordshire’s most popular and sustainable restaurant group. Owner of the new-look Five Bells Bar & Dining, Andrei Lussmann, says it will be a destination where people can go and enjoy a relaxing drink and meal. As well as some of the Lussmanns classics, the menu will feature quality bar snacks including Barnet halloumi sticks and Sussex rare-breed chorizo. lussmanns.com

FOOD & DRINK • INTERVIEW

CONFIT DUCK LEG WITH CRUSHED CELERIAC, SAMPHIRE & LENTIL JUS

Q Why did you originally want to run a pub? A David is a career caterer, but I just

fell into it, like so many others. We both met whilst running pubs in London and once we were married, it made sense to have our own business.

Q How long were you looking for the right

spot and what exactly were you looking for? A We looked for three years to find our perfect first pub – the Alford Arms. We were looking at south-east England and looked at sites in most of the Home Counties. During our search, we slowly refined our criteria and this little pub in Hertfordshire ticked all the boxes.

BECKY AND DAVID

we could move the kitchen into the old brewhouse, which was key to being able to support a busy pub, and carry out a major refurbishment. We waited nine months, but word spread and trade grew from day one. Q Have there been plenty of ups

and downs in that time?

A As in any business you have to take

Q What was it about the Alford Arms

the rough with the smooth and building resilience is key to success. We have been through economic slumps and suffered a pretty catastrophic fire in 2016 that closed us for six months and, of course, more recently the pandemic stretched us to our limits, but thankfully with the help of our amazing team, bounced back each time.

A Location, location, location! This beautiful

Q Can you pick out three highlights

that encouraged you to take it over?

wooded valley, tucked away near Berkhamsted, is as pretty as can be, and the building was just the right size and oozed charm. Q How different was it in the early days? A The first few months were strange,

as we had to wait for planning before

THE POPULAR BUBBLE

during the last 25 years that will always stick in your mind? A Winning The Publican Dining Pub National Award in 2005 felt like we had really made it. Launching our Pedal of Honour cycling charity, which raised over £100k in the 10 years it was running pre-Covid. And celebrating our 25th anniversary on 17 January 2024 with over 200 of our customers old and new. Q How important is the community around you? A We are at the heart of several local villages, not just Frithsden, and we would be lost without their support. We sponsor a local cricket team and support many local schools and charities with vouchers and gifts. Q Do you use plenty of local suppliers? A Absolutely! We pride ourselves on the

quality of our produce and list all our local suppliers on the back of menus.

Q How do you approach your food menus? A Our menus have evolved over time, so now

we change them weekly. This enables us to follow the seasons and take advantage of the

very best produce from our smaller suppliers. We love to eat out and have a vast collection of cookbooks, which boosted by our favourite Instagram feeds, keep the ideas coming. Q Is it possible to sum up the cooking style we can expect? A Our style is eclectic and you will find influences from all around the globe. The key theme though is to allow the ingredients to shine, so we focus on the very best flavours we can evoke for each dish. Q Are there a couple of dishes on the menu that you are really loving right now, and if so why? A We cannot talk about our menu, without zoning in on the “Bubble”! It has been on our menu since the very beginning and is still our biggest seller: Bubble and squeak with oak smoked bacon, free range poached egg and hollandaise sauce. It’s a generous starter or light meal, but you can also have it as a “Double Bubble” main course if you’re particularly hungry! As it’s cold outside, classics are always a sure fire hit and our chefs make a mean pie: Turkey and ham hock pie with creamed leeks is flying out the door this week. Q Do you try to support local businesses when it comes to the drinks you offer? A You’ll always find a stellar line up of local brews on the bar and our lager, IPA and stout are also made within 30 miles of here. We try and tick as many ethical boxes as we can, so all our wines are old world to save on food miles and many of our softs are organic from Luscombe’s in Devon. Q Any regrets about taking on the pub 25 years ago? A No regrets at all and the thing that puts and keeps a smile on David’s and my faces are the smiles from customers and staff alike.

ecently opened in Chelsea is Azzurra, a large, glamorous eaterie with an Italian slant and a focus on seafood. If it feels international, that’s down to David Yeo, the corporate lawyer-tured restuarateur whose Aqua group operates restaurants in Hong Kong, New York, Miami and Dubai. In London, he’s the man behind Aqua Shard and Hutong at The Shard, plus Regent Street’s Aqua Kyoto and

Aqua Nuevo. This Chelsea opening has a modern global vibe with its spacious interior, atmospheric dim lighting, comfortable seating and crisp electronic soundtrack. You could imagine yourself anywhere in the world. The menu is firmly located in Italy and there’s an impressive seafood counter. We start with glasses of Franciacorta sparkling wine – a northern Italian treat that’s rarely exported – and examine a menu of Crudo, Antipasti, Pasta e Risotto and Secondi. It’s our fault entirely that we end up

overordering, anticipating wrongly that dishes would be elegantly tiny. Spoiler alert: they’re not. To start, red mullet comes lightly torched with a green, herby, breadcrumby sauce and is lovely, while red snapper with pear and Calabrian chilli is excellent: subtle, sweet and refreshing. Next is linguini alle vongole, a classic that lists Sicilian olive oil and Calabrian chilli – and it’s just as good as I hoped. Juicy clams, lots of lemon, garlic and parsley – and portion size is generous. A plate of fritto misto is equally generous, with lots of moreishly salty seafood and courgette that transports you to a Sardinian beach bar. We could have stopped there, but we ordered Secondi too: catch of the day is a winning sea bass, served with a high class caponata. My stone bass is less successful: it’s a heavy dish with lobster bisque, stuffed zucchini flower and gnocchi, but somehow lacking the light elegance of everything else. Pudding, however, is excllent: pistachio tiramisu, assembled in front of us with lots of dramatic flourish, is sweet, nutty and luxurious. AZZURRA 127-128 Sloane Stret, SW1 azzurrarestaurant.co.uk

“Many personal services are unlikely to be replaced by automation”

C U T ABOV E How you can spring into a new career in an uncertain world

L

ife on planet Earth is constantly evolving, and in particular the way humans interact within the workplace. Advancements in technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, mean that machines are rapidly taking over from humans. Renowned ‘safe careers’ such as finance, law, and accountancy are rapidly being swept away due to automated business processes. Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom – as previous occupations disappear, new ones are being created by technology companies. But what do you do if you don’t want to be a cognitive computing engineer, a blockchain specialist or an internet architect? Career advisors and experts have spotted three trends. The first is called the portfolio career. In the past, students could leave school, college or university and start a career that would last for the whole of their working life. The portfolio careerist acknowledges that a job for life is unlikely. They equip themselves with a variety of skills

By TRISHA BULLER

and, instead of having a single permanent job, work on multiple short-term contracts or freelance assignments often simultaneously. The second trend is the rise of the solo entrepreneur, or solopreneur as they are increasingly becoming known. Solopreneurs start their own small business often embracing the internet or social media to raise their profile or as a route to market. The rewards for starting a business can be great, but it’s much harder work than it appears and the risks are high – up to half of small businesses fail in the first five years. The final trend, and the one I’m best qualified to advise on, is the rise of skillsbased or craft vocations. Many students faced with the prospect of tuition fees, and leaving university with a pile of debt, have decided that apprenticeships or on the job training is more desirable, and sustainable. Many skills and personal services, in particular, are very unlikely to be replaced with automation. Take hairdressing, for example. I’m sure that it’s technically feasible, but we are still a long way from this

happening, mainly because clients appreciate the human contact. Would you like your hair to be cut by a scissor-wielding robot? Not everyone possesses the skills required to become a hairdresser: it’s hard work, requires creativity, training, dedication and immense people skills. With the correct training, the rewards can be enormous. Some of the world’s most renowned stylists started as young as 14, initially as Saturday assistants, whilst still at school and you can too. There is always time to change your career path. You may not desire to be the hottest stylist in town, but still love the environment of the fashion industry, supporting a team of professionals, and creating the most amazing looks. The world of hairdressing is different every day, full of challenges, but the opportunities are endless. If you’re interested in an apprenticeship with Ciente hair health spa we would love to hear from you. Find out more by visiting trishabuller.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

I

Carly Glendinning meets Catie Miller, founder of the online class phenomenon, Barre Series

t's a frosty Friday morning when I head to one of Catie Miller's Barre Series classes. The changing rooms are buzzing with dancers limbering up for an audition in another studio – and the anticipation and excitement are palpable. Getting out and about for classes isn't always easy since I became a mum, and it feels like a nice switch up from working out in my living room. Catie does, in fact, have an amazing online platform – a glossy on-demand Barre workout library, that you can access anytime, anywhere. But I'm ready for her to put me through my paces in-person. With a background in dance, and certified in Barre, STOTT Pilates,

Pre + Postnatal Movement and Total Body Resistance (TRX), Catie started Barre Series as a reaction to the high-intensity interval training everywhere in the fitness industry. Redefining what a Barre class can feel like, her approach blends ballet, Pilates and cardio to help you sculpt your body without burning it out. Catie bounds out of the studio to greet me. She has such a warm and lovely energy, and she invites me to choose some light hand weights and a mat. The class feels cosy, and it's not long before we're all flowing together – pliéing, relevéing, and sautéing. I find it easy to follow along, and Catie helps me with my form as the

class progresses. Cardio, abs, and core-work focus on small, but effective movements and I definitely feel the burn. What I really love about the class though is how welcoming everybody is. Chatting after class, Catie tells me: "At Barre Series, we take pride not only in our dynamically curated classes, but also in fostering an engaging community of like-minded members who contribute to the resilience and shared success of every individual on their wellness path." And it's this that makes me want to come back to one of Catie's classes soon. In person classes £30 per session, see more at barreseries.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

BoConcept offers several beautifully curated collections including the Bergamo sofa with a round lounging unit, the Salamanca sofa, the Bolzano sofa & armchair, and the Modena sofa. The Bolzano collection epitomises this shift to curved minimalism. With a sculptural silhouette, the elegant sofa has a streamlined look and feel. Designed by Morten Georgsen, the capsule’s organic round silhouette has a cocooning effect with curvaceous frames and puffed-up seats enhanced by pairing with cosy, inviting textures, like Lazio Beige bouclé. BoConcept’s Bolzano collection stands out thanks to its curved front panel that gives a 360 degree curve all the way around the seat. Additionally, there is now an option to invest in the modern accent chair, available with swivel functionality, seamlessly blending soft organic shapes with minimalist lines. Moving forward into the warmer months, a lot of us will be spending more time with family and enjoying days in the garden. Doesn’t it make sense to release the potential of unused parts of your garden and maximise the outdoor space you do have?

ARTFULLY WALLS

Off the WA L L It can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks, but what to do if you’re in a hurry? Go online, of course By PENDLE HARTE

G

allery walls have been a major trend for several years now. But of course hanging pictures on your walls was a thing long before anyone came up with the idea of a gallery wall. And while some people naturally acquire things they like and frame them, others don’t know where to start. Realistically, it can take a lifetime to amass a collection of artworks and who has time for that? Art lover and tech visionary Cathy Glazer came up with a solution. Her online gallery Artfully Walls is dedicated to providing something for everyone, with all tastes catered for with the same approach to high quality printing and framing. It’s a carefully curated yet vast and diverse archive of artworks of all kinds, where everything can be bought in a variety of sizes, with several framing options, and each piece is printed

to order as a museum quality fine art print with archival inks on premium paper and canvas. It’s a seemingly infinite resource, and its genius lies not only in Cathy’s professional eye for quality, but in the technology that organises an enormous body of work into a searchable library. When faced with thousands of potential pictures, even the most decisive person is likely to feel exhausted. And where to begin? Searching by artist is an obvious starting point, but only for someone who knows artists that they like. Maybe medium? So you might search photography, say, or watercolour, or collage, or illustration. This is where Artfully Walls comes into its own. You might search something more abstract, such as, say ‘abstract’ or ‘landscape’ or ‘portrait’. You might like cats and search that, or seascapes, or architectural drawings, or botanical images. You might want something that’s mostly red to go with your

sofa. You might want something traditional, or something experimental. Each image is so precisely tagged and categorised that searches are impressively accurate. Alternatively, the archive includes a large series of designer picks, where people from all over the world with an eye for design offer up their own gallery walls for inspiration. Most of us don’t have tastes that are entirely consistent, and these walls show how pieces can work together even if they wouldn’t be classified together by any algorithm. All of this data creates an excellent resource for analysing trends too. Current demand shows a diversity of popular choices, with lots of searches for Greek and Roman motifs, as well as 18th century oil paintings. Linocuts are in vogue, as are portraits. You heard it here first. artfullywalls.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

THE SWR TEAM

A S K

T H E

EXPERT Absolutely Hertfordshire chats to the MD of SWR Home & Outdoor, James Munnelly, about transformations and spotting a gap in the market

Q Tell us about the origins of the company… A The SWR Group was established in 1989 within a modest workshop located in Hemel Hempstead by John Bates, who continues to hold a significant stake in the company and frequently drops by to greet the team and oversee our operations. John possessed a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit and aimed to establish a company that would maintain its agility, enabling us to venture into fresh markets and adapt as needed. Q Initially, what did SWR specialise in? A SWR, an abbreviation for Steel Wire Rope, may not be commonly recognised because we have diversified. Our company now encompasses various divisions, such as Wire Rope & Assemblies, Garage Door Trade Spares, and Balustrade, but the focus of this interview is SWR Home & Outdoor.

62

Q What gaps in the market have you spotted? A SWR Home & Outdoor has undergone multiple transformations throughout its history, evolving from its initial identity as a garage door business into a high-end home improvement and outdoor living establishment. During the pandemic, there was a nationwide surge in demand for outdoor living products, as people redirected their attention towards transforming their gardens into functional and aspirational outdoor living spaces. While this demand has naturally tapered off, the market dynamics in the UK have shifted, and it appears this trend is here to stay. Therefore, our new showroom places a significant emphasis on outdoor living shading solutions, offering a fantastic selection of products from renowned brands, in addition to our comprehensive range of home improvement offerings.

Q Over the years, what have been the key moments for SWR Home and Outdoor? A It's quite a challenging question to address because SWR Home and Outdoor is constantly advancing and reaching new heights. However, in retrospect, the pivotal moments can be traced back to our deliberate shift towards supplying high end products along with the more traditional, everyday products like garage and entrance doors. If we were to highlight one milestone it would undoubtedly be the completion of our impressive 7,000-square-foot showroom in Hemel Hempstead. The team has executed this project with exceptional finesse, achieving a standard that has left our customers delighted and surpassing even our expectations. In more recent developments, we are thrilled to announce our partnership with

Grand Design Magazine, a recognition that has followed our market-leading products being featured on numerous episodes of the enduringly popular TV show. Q What do you believe makes you stand out? A At the heart of our ethos lies a deep commitment to prioritising people in every part of our operations. Whether it’s our valued customers, our vibrant community, or our dedicated team members, we consistently surpass conventional standards. Our outstanding customer reviews are testament to this dedication, and it's worth noting that approximately half of our projects stem from referrals. We take immense pride in our accreditation with the prestigious Investor in People (IIP) Gold award, a distinction that positions us within the top 10 percent of IIP-affiliated businesses on a global scale.

Q Do you like to be involved with the local community? A Our strategy, which revolves around prioritising people, extends its focus to our community and the principles of sustainability. We maintain a close-knit partnership with nearby schools and charitable organisations, striving to make a meaningful difference where it matters most. As Enterprise Advisors, we collaborate with local schools to provide valuable work experience. Furthermore, we support local charities and are proud business partners with Den's, an organisation dedicated to rebuilding the lives of local individuals facing homelessness, poverty, and social exclusion. Q What kind of new products/ launches can we expect in 2024? A We are continually on the lookout for new and exciting additions to our product

range, and we are delighted to introduce the latest innovation to our selection – the Wind Dam. This remarkable glass balustrade extends gracefully up to 1.8 metres with a firm push down on the glass, providing an elegant yet highly effective wind barrier. Designed specifically for roof terraces, decking and seating areas, it also complements hot tubs and swimming pools effortlessly. Our home team are on the verge of unveiling a partnership with a renowned European outdoor kitchen manufacturer, a collaboration that will seamlessly complement our existing outdoor living offerings. ALEX HEMS

Alex Hems BUS I NE S S : Head of the

Aldenham Foundation W E B S I TE : aldenhamfoundation.com

Q Before working at Aldenham Foundation, what was your working background? A I have been fortunate to work in some outstanding schools, where I have learned from skilled and committed leaders. Immediately prior to taking up this role I was a Head of an all-through girls’ school in Edinburgh, which was proud of its origins in the movement to promote girls’ education at the end of the 19th century. Q What inspired you to work

at Aldenham Foundation? A There is a deep-seated belief here at Aldenham that academic success is best achieved when children are valued for what they can bring to all areas of school life and are given the chance to excel on the stage or in sport for

Marking International Women’s Day on 8 March, Absolutely meets three locals making waves in the education world

example as much as in the classroom. Growth and success arise when children feel connected to those around them through strong relationships, which thrive in the House system that is at the heart of our model. The chance to lead an organization with these values at its core was too good to miss for me. Q What do you think

makes you different?

A I don’t think I am especially

different, but I am lucky enough to work somewhere that is.

Q How was 2023 for you? A Busy and exciting as I have been getting

to know my new community at Aldenham.

Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A We are working on a researchbased overarching model of education for Aldenham, which we are very excited about. Q On a personal level, what are your hopes and dreams for 2024? A My eldest daughter takes her A-levels this summer and the younger one next year so I hope they both achieve what they are working for, in order to take their first steps in the adult world. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A A family wedding in August, which will bring lots of people together to celebrate.

Q What experiences or events

led you to pursue the career path that you are currently on? A Every child is unique and the way they learn and develop has always fascinated me from my days as a teenage babysitter through my Early Years Diploma studies and today after 20 years’ experience in the sector. Children from birth to five years are at their most receptive and inquisitive. How they feel and what they learn at this time shapes their lives. As a life-long educator this is where I can make a real difference. Unlike other service providers my relationship with customers – who become family – is based on deeper levels of trust and partnership rather than mere collaboration. We work together to ensure each child realises their full potential. Every learning journey is unique and immensely rewarding. Q Can you share the motivating factors

or the inspiration that influenced your decision to join Childbase Partnership? A Childbase Partnership, which is number one in quality league tables for UK Early Years providers, is unique in the sector because it is employeeowned. Every single colleague in 44-day

I’m part of a huge team that has won everything from a Princess Royal Award for our bespoke training programme through to awards for our decades-long ‘climate positive’ actions. We are always striving to be better in everything we do and that is exciting. Q What sets Nursery on the Green

Day Nursery in Redbourn apart from other early years settings? A The setting, overlooking a huge open space and with state-of-the-art facilities and resources, provides the best possible environment for our bespoke ‘learning through play’ activities. Children are in the driving seat as activity is designed around particular interests with science experiments around growth cycles, creative pursuits in our spacious art area whilst listening to classical music or taking apart a bicycle using real tools. Every experience is designed to challenge and inspire, and fun is an absolute priority at all times.

considering a career in early years? A Talk to us at Childbase! The opportunities and rewards are endless. No two days are the same and nothing compares to witnessing a child’s wonder at discovery or their triumph following the achievement of a personal goal they have been pursuing for a long time. You can be a teacher, a learner and a business leader. In terms of job satisfaction – there is nothing better.

Q Before working at Abbot's Hill, what

was your background in education?

A Early in my career, I moved to teach

CARLI TOAL

English in Japan. I taught there for 3 years, then at a Secondary Modern and a Grammar School in Yorkshire, and then in London at a large secondary school in East Ham. It was a very diverse community with high levels of deprivation. I am so glad I began my teaching career by learning from the most brilliant, passionate and committed educators in such different settings. About 20 years ago, I made the move into an all-girls' school in St Albans and ultimately became Deputy Head. I joined Abbot's Hill as Head in January 2020, just before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Q What inspired you to

work in education?

A I went to an all-girls' school from

11 and have carried with me the spirit of the early suffragists who founded the school and who wanted the best education for girls. My current school was founded for 'young women of character' which speaks about spirit and non-conformity in an age of on-line perfection. Most of all, it is a privilege to work with young people and to play a small part in setting them up for life.

Q What do you think

makes you different?

A I don't think I'm 'different'. However,

I am passionate about providing an education that is 'different' in its whole-hearted focus on the individual and very lucky to work somewhere that delivers this authentically and with integrity. Q How was 2023 for you? A The education world shifted on

its axis during Covid. All those who work in schools are still reckoning with the impact of that time. Firmly keeping sight of our goals, we have been adjusting our strategy to ensure that we remain responsive to these emerging needs. For example, we have reinvigorated our Clan system (our founders were Scottish and the traditions all have Scottish themes) in order to foster a strong sense of togetherness which is fundamental to a healthy, happy community. Q Are you introducing anything new for 2024? A Our 'Curriculum 25' is a model of education that will move Abbot's Hill forwards and provide a modern educational framework in keeping with our aims and ethos. It is an exciting time. Q Outside of work, what are you looking forward to this year? A My eldest daughter is heading into her last year at the school where I work. I am excited to see her make decisions that will steer the next phase of her life. My younger daughter starts senior school and so all in all it feels like a big year ahead. LEIGHTON PARK SCHOOL

CHANGING COURSE National Offer Day is a key moment in a child's (and parents’) educational journey. Here’s all you need to know about it

N

ational Offer Day is a highly anticipated and nerve-wracking event for thousands of families across the UK. This annual event, typically occurring in early March, marks the day when parents and students receive the crucial information about secondary school placements for the upcoming academic year. For many parents and their children, National Offer Day is a pivotal moment that can significantly impact their lives. It is the day when the local education authorities announce the secondary school places allocated to each student based on their preferences and the admission criteria of the chosen schools.

NATIONAL OFFER DAY CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR ALL

The process begins months in advance, with families submitting their preferences for schools in the preceding autumn. The anticipation leading up to National Offer Day is palpable, as families eagerly await the news that will shape their child’s educational journey. Parents may have researched and visited multiple schools, considering factors such as academic reputation, extra-curricular activities, and the overall ethos of the institution. The culmination of these efforts and preferences manifests in the allocation of school places on National Offer Day. When the day arrives, parents often gather around computers or smartphones, anxiously waiting for the clock to strike a designated time when

the information will be released. Local authorities employ various methods to communicate the results, including online portals, email, or traditional mail. The tension in the air is palpable as families discover whether their child has secured a place at their preferred school or if they have been allocated an alternative option. For some, National Offer Day brings a sense of relief and joy as they learn that their child will attend the desired school. However, for others, it may be a moment of disappointment and uncertainty if the allocated school was not one of their top choices. This can be particularly challenging if the assigned school is geographically distant or doesn’t align with the family’s educational values. In recent years, the demand for A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

THE WEBBER INDEPENDENT SCHOOL

“Today, National Offer Day is an even more pivotal event, with emotions running high for both parents and students alike”

Senior Deputy Head and Head of Prep School, Kevin Wills, says: "If you don’t receive your first choice, first things first, try not to panic! There are various routes of redress, including requesting to be added to the waiting list at your preferred school and even appealing the decision. Given the time elapsed since having to submit preferences in October, you may even find that the school place offered now better meets your needs. Also, where finances allow, consider moving from the state sector to a local independent school. While many operate waiting lists for places, relocations mean that spaces do sometimes become available, so it is always worth asking the question. Independent schools typically have much smaller class sizes than state schools, which enables more individualised learning and support."

Leighton Park School leightonpark.com

certain schools has intensified, leading to increased competition for limited spaces. This has made National Offer Day an even more pivotal event, with emotions running high for both parents and students alike. The process is designed to be fair, with admission criteria based on factors such as proximity to the school, siblings already attending, and any special educational needs. In the aftermath of National Offer Day, there is often a period for families to consider their options. Some may choose to appeal the decision, especially if they feel there were exceptional circumstances that were not initially considered.

74

Others may explore alternative schools or make arrangements for transportation to the assigned school if it is not in close proximity. National Offer Day highlights the broader challenges within the education system, including the need for sufficient school places, equitable access to quality education, and ongoing efforts to address the diverse needs of students. As this annual event unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of education in shaping the future of young minds and the role that parents and communities play in advocating for the best possible opportunities for their children.

A lot can change between your application and National Offer Day. If you are concerned that your allocated state school might not work for you after all, you could consider an appeal or perhaps look at the independent sector. Head of Leighton Park School, winner of the ISA’s Independent Senior School of the Year 2023-24, Matthew Judd says: “We don’t try to be like other schools. Our starting point is to nurture each young person to really think about who they are and what they want to achieve. From there we do everything we can to support them to succeed as themselves – true to who they are and all the more remarkable for it.” To see what a difference a Leighton Park education could make for your family, their next open morning is on 15 March.

rom scuba diving and water polo, to kayaking, snorkelling, swimming, canoeing and paddle sports, aquatic activities provide numerous benefits for children. As well as being beneficial for their physical, mental, and social development, incorporating water-based activities into the school curriculum can provide children with unique learning experiences that promote their overall wellbeing. Water-based sports allow pupils to gain water confidence, a key life skill, as well as empowering them to make informed choices around water. Overcoming any fears of water and acquiring new skills in a supportive environment can help children develop a sense of achievement and self-belief. This newfound confidence can extend beyond the water and positively impact other

areas of a child’s life. For example, because water-based activities can be daunting for children, especially before they learn to swim, learning new skills and boosting competence in aquatic sports enables them to develop a stronger, transferable mindset across other educational and sporting experiences in school.

SOOTHING PROPERTIES Transitional skills include developing organisational abilities, enhancing problemsolving and providing individuals with a way of expressing themselves positively. Water-based activities encourage social interaction and teamwork too. It is widely known that engaging in water-based activities can also help reduce stress and anxiety in children, because water often has a calming effect on the mind and body. The soothing properties of water can promote relaxation, improve

“EDUCATORS CAN CREATE A FUN LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT PROMOTES PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL WELLBEING” mood, and enhance overall wellbeing. As such, incorporating water-based activities into the school day can provide a refreshing break from academic pressures and classroom-based lessons while promoting a positive mental state. The beauty of water-based activities like kayaking, paddle sports, and scuba diving, is that children don’t need to be strong swimmers to participate in and excel at these sports. For instance, in kayaking, the ability to continually stay upright through balance and to read the flow of the water allows pupils to forget any worries and be present in

the moment. Similarly with scuba diving, as soon as you take that first breath underneath the water and continually breathe throughout the dive, you automatically have one focus and forget about all elements of day-to-day life.

STIMULATING THE SENSES It is clear to see that when a pupil is safely pushed beyond their comfort zone, the overall experience of completing a task is vastly more rewarding and often leads to a thirst for success in other areas. From a physical perspective, these activities help improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination. Likewise, water-based activities stimulate the senses in a unique way. The sensation of water on the skin, the sound of splashing water, and the feeling of buoyancy all provide sensory input that can enhance a child’s sensory integration skills. This can be particularly beneficial for children with sensory processing difficulties or special needs. Regular participation in water-based activities also requires a growing need for water safety sessions to be more readily available to school-age groups. Such sessions teach pupils about currents, tides, the dangers of weirs, locks and lakes, particularly when out boating. Much of this can be learned while participating in

FLY-FISHING

activities in differing environments. At York House, we have two qualified scuba divers within our staff, and we plan to run a trip to Malta for our pupils to allow them to gain their Junior PADI Open Water. We are also looking to take our kayaking sessions outside so pupils can achieve their British Canoeing Paddle Power Passports. Our partnership with The London Oyster Diving Club helps pupils to learn within a truly open water setting, diving on war wrecks and into cave entrances. York House has also become a North London training hub for the Oyster Diving Club, externally offering ten open water courses for new starters.

STRETCHING YOUNG MINDS Water activities play a large part in our residential trips too – Year 8 pupils get to paddle in Loch a’Chadh-fi, which is a sea loch connected to the North Atlantic in which pupils get to enjoy the swell coming from across the ocean. Water-based activities offer a wide range of benefits for children at school contributing to their holistic development. By incorporating a range of water-based activities into the school curriculum, educators can create a fun and engaging learning environment that promotes physical, mental, and social wellbeing. STEM ahead

Food for thought Independent day and boarding school in Bushey, St Margaret’s, has launched weekly nutrition workshops for its youngest pupils in Reception and Year 1. The children, aged four to six years, have been participating in a series of fun, inspiring sessions which help them to identify a wide range of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs, while learning why they should include them in their diet. Studies have shown that if a child understands why certain foods are beneficial, they are more likely to eat them. Nutritionist Caroline Mentzer, who has worked in the field of children’s health for over two decades, is running the sessions at St Margaret’s School. She explains: “I’ve found that young children are really interested in learning how certain foods can benefit them. Simply telling children to eat five a day because it’s good for them does little for their motivation. Yet most children can tell you that carrots help you to see in the dark. Through these regular workshops they are slowly, but surely, making the connection between eating real food and experiencing good health.” The weekly workshops use a combination of storytelling, colour coding and craft activities to emphasise key messages. stmargarets-school.org.uk

In a bid to get more girls studying STEM subjects at GCSE and beyond, Berkhamsted ran a STEM Speed Networking event where girls met with professionals in the STEM field to learn more about what a STEM career looks like. Since women make up just over one-quarter of the UK’s Science, Tech, Engineering, and Maths workforce, Berkhamsted Girls is countering the outdated narrative that females don’t belong in STEM roles, from creating a group of STEM Ambassadors in Sixth Form to hosting a Physics Fun Club for Year 8 girls. Most recently, their senior girls met influential individuals in STEM at a speed networking event. Pupils spent half of the event in a seminar where they heard from keynote speakers Thomas Faulkner and Zoe Nicholls who study and work in Civil Engineering. Thomas, an Executive Vice

President for Operations at Skanska, spoke to pupils about his favourite part of the job. Zoe’s speech was particularly inspiring since she was in the audience’s shoes not so long ago. “I studied at Berkhamsted from Pre-Prep to Sixth Form,” Zoe told

the crowd. “I’m now a Structural Engineering and Architecture MA student at Sheffield University”. This was a welcome reminder that they can pursue STEM as much as their male peers. berkhamsted.com

ROMAN Theatre Festival Presented by OVO, this unique festival is celebrating its 10th edition this summer

O

VO’s Roman Theatre, the oldest producing theatre in the UK, will celebrate the 10th edition of its annual open-air summer festival with an incredible line-up of theatre and music. Renowned for its bold and imaginative spins on classic plays and stories, this landmark year will present brand-new adaptations of English classics as well as the return of some iconic audience favourites from OVO and visiting companies. The Roman Theatre Open Air Festival has become a highlight of the summer cultural calendar, featuring high-quality productions presented by OVO and visiting theatre companies. OVO’s 10th anniversary summer season will be bookended with exciting highlights from the company, directed by Artistic Director Adam Nichols. Opening with the return of their critically acclaimed production The Merry Wives of Windsor, where the classic Shakespeare comedy receives an 80s makeover in this ‘inventive and laughout-loud remodelling’ (Daily Express), the season theatre programme rounds out with a brand-new musical The Highwayman, based on the narrative poem by Alfred Noyes, with book, music and lyrics by Kitty Morgan. In a co-production with Pitlochry Festival Theatre, OVO will present a fresh new reimagining of Sense and Sensibility, directed by Adam Nichols and adapted by Frances Poet. The medieval poem Gawain and the Green Knight will be brought to life on stage, in a co-production with Make It Beautiful, and an imaginative contemporary mashup of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and The Seagull will challenge preconceptions in
