t's not even Halloween as I write this, but we are very much foused on Christmas this month. Starting even earlier than usual, we've already bought and wrapped our gifts, ordered our turkeys and chosen our outifts. Hasn't everyone? And is November too early to be putting up decorations? Because this year's decorations are more fabulous than ever and we can't wait to get started. For 2023 we're looking forward to maximum impact when it comes to decorations, with lots of foliage and candles as well as an abundance of sparkles. And the same could be said for next year's weddings, which also feature in this issue, and it seems that we'll be going all out for those too, with lavish venues and elaborate themes. Otherwise in this issue, we're all excited about Terry de Havilland's skyscraper heels, and about the Museum of London Docklands' new fashion exhibition – plus, we're very keen on pasta. There's the usual mix of news, events and inspiration too, so here's hoping you enjoy November!

CATHY HAYES, FLOATING

Opening at Fitzrovia Gallery is the first London solo exhibition from artist Cathy Hayes, an expressive mixedmedia artist known for her vibrant use of colour. Her architectural training has influenced her artwork's structure and composition, leading her to embrace a flatter vision of space reminiscent of Matisse's techniques. Formal training and residencies at prestigious institutions such as the Slade School of Fine Art have been instrumental in expanding her artistic approach. Her work explores moments of awe and connection in the ocean. This solo show promises an evolution in her palette, inspired by Chinese watercolour techniques and the Bahamas. “The imagined story of William Shakespeare's wife, about whom very little is known”

Hamnet Maggie O'Farrell's novel comes to the stage in this RSC production By PENDLE HARTE

T

heatre is at the heart of Maggie O'Farrell's muchloved novel Hamnet. This is the imagined story of Agnes Hathaway, William Shakespeare's wife, about whom very little is known. It is recorded that their son, Hamnet, died of the plague aged 11, and that this somehow inspired Shakespeare's Hamnet; O'Farrell's novel spins an intriguing narrative from these notions. Expanding on the idea of the woman behind each successful man, the play, adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti, explores the relationship between Shakespeare and his wife, a woman said to be illiterate and rumoured to have connections with witchcraft. We're in 16th century Stratford upon Avon and Shakespeare's father is a struggling

and angry glove maker. The set has a simple A-frame structure - later noted as an A for Agnes - and the story opens with a young William, not yet 18, meeting the mysterious Agnes who keeps a falcon and lives with her brother and her father's widow. She becomes pregnant and senses that she will have two children; they marry and soon she is pregnant again, but this time with twins, which leaves her certain that one will perish. When her husband goes to work in London, he stays away for long periods, coming home only when the plague closes the theatres. A gulf opens between William and Agnes as her life revolves around domesticity, while his rehearsals in London with Burbage and Will Kemp function in this play like Shakespearean comedy interludes. It's an atmospheric production, the contents of Agnes's mind represented with whispers and music, though her husband's thoughts are less clear. His need to write takes him away from family life, and for her, his ability to function despite their son's death is incomprehensible and abhorrent. Madeleine Mantock gives an emotional performance, while Alex Jarrett and Hayden Burke are playful as twins Judith and Hamnet, and Tom Varey is a distant yet passionate William. Fans of the novel won't be disappointed. HAMNET Garrick Theatre; until 17 February rsc.org.uk

red coat worn by Princess Diana and a tweed coat worn by EastEnders’ Dot Cotton are on display alongside clothing from M&S, Moss Bros and Wallis in this exhibition at Museum of London Docklands showcasing the role of Jewish designers, makers and retailers in making London an iconic fashion city. From East End tailors to the couture salons of the West End, Fashion City tells the stories of Jewish makers who became leaders in their industries, created some of the most recognisable looks of the 20th century, founded retail chains still on the high street today, and dressed the rich and famous, from David Bowie and Princess Diana to Mick Jagger and Muhammad Ali. Featuring fashion and textiles, oral histories, objects, ephemera and photography, Fashion City uses the places and spaces of London to weave individual stories together with a broader social history. Setting the scene is a space dedicated to London’s East End, where many Jewish migrants arrived between the late 19th and mid-20th century. Personal ephemera from ordinary Londoners will tell stories of some of the 200,000 Jewish people who arrived in Britain during that

“Jewish entrepreneurs and retailers shaped the British high street” time, over 50% of whom were involved in the fashion, clothing, and textile trade. A small travelling case used by a child arriving in London as part of the Kindertransport is displayed alongside a leather bag owned by a woman who fled from Vienna in 1938. A depiction of independent shops and businesses, from umbrella sellers to bag makers, demonstrates how the area grew into a hub of activity for the manufacturing of clothing, shoes and accessories from the late 19th century. The exhibition highlights the little-known connections between different immigrant communities, telling the stories of Caribbean tailors and Bengali seamstresses who came to London and found employment and mentorship from Jewish employers. Travelling from East to West of the city, visitors journey from the realm of Jewish tailoring, manufacturing and accessory making, to the boutiques and couture salons of the West End. Here, the exhibition uncovers the leading

designers and enterprising retailers who put London on the map for fashion by introducing new styles and transforming shopping experiences. Alongside a coat created for Princess Diana by David Sassoon (Bellville Sassoon), highlights include a newly acquired Alexon tweed coat worn by beloved EastEnders character Dot Cotton, which will be on display for the first time, plus items from some of the UK’s most recognisable high street stores including an M&S bra and Moss Bros suit. There’s a Mr Fish maxi-smoking dress with beaded panels, found as a result of the public call out in January 2023. Mr Fish was a leading figure of the Peacock Revolution whose flamboyant menswear was worn by stars including Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, and Muhammad Ali. Another highlight is a wedding dress by Neymar, a brand founded by Netty Spiegel who arrived alone on the Kindertransport at just 15 years old, and went on to become

one of London’s go-to wedding dress designers. Her work is remembered by generations of Jewish brides and in national collections at the Jewish Museum London, Museum of London and V&A. Wandering the facades of Regent Street, Fashion City explores the stories of Jewish entrepreneurs and retailers who shaped the British high street, founding well-known retail chains including Marks & Spencer, Wallis, River Island, and Moss Bros. It will pinpoint the impact Jewish people had in shaping the ready-to-wear industry and new kinds of shopping experiences. Cecil Gee, whose menswear store on Shaftsbury Avenue became a destination, attracted stars including John Lennon with its trend-setting clothes. Dr Lucie Whitmore, Curator at Museum of London, said: “Jewish makers established the ready-to -wear industry and dominated Carnaby Street in the swinging sixties” Until 14 April 2024, musuemoflondon.org.uk

DRAMA Absolutely chats to Marcelo Dos Santos about his new play, Backstairs Billy

Q This is your first West End production. Tell us about the play? A Backstairs Billy is a comedy about the unlikely friendship between The Queen Mother played by Penelope Wilton, her infamous butler William (Billy) Tallon, played by Luke Evans, and the elaborate and frankly camp court they created at Clarence House. Set in 1979 just before the Winter of Discontent, it blends high comedy with human drama, pathos as well as politics.

THE QUEEN MOTHER (PENELOPE WILTON) AND HER LOYAL SERVANT WILLIAM "BILLY" TALLON (LUKE EVANS)

Q What was the appeal in writing about The Queen Mother? A I was primarily drawn really to the dynamic between The Queen Mother and Billy. They were together for 50 years and their relationship weathered a number of scandals. I wanted to explore what drew the working-class Billy into that orbit and what the ties were that kept binding them to each other. It felt like a really interesting way of exploring quite big issues like class but in a playful and engaging form with the potential for a lot of farce and fun along the way.

Q Are you involved in the

rehearsal process? A Yes, I've been in the initial first week of rehearsal and will now pop in and out. At a certain point it's useful for the writer to get out of the way. Q You won last year’s Fringe

MARCELO DOS SANTOS

First award at Edinburgh – what was that like? A That was amazing. The whole thing was a ride. The show is called Feeling Afraid As If Something Terrible Is Going To Happen and it was produced by Francesca Moody, who produced the original productions of Fleabag, so we knew we were in good hands – but its almost immediate success was just lovely. It's a one-man show starring Samuel Barnett (History Boys, Dirk Gently) about a self-deprecating, permanently

“Exploring quite big issues like class but in a playful and engaging form”

single gay comedian who finally meets his Mr Right and then does everything wrong. And there's lots of twists which I won't give away. The show is coming to the Bush Theatre in London this November and December as well. Q What are you working on next? A A BBC drama commission and a couple of

other things I probably shouldn't talk about yet.

Q What drew you to become a playwright? A I've always loved theatre and it's one of

the most collaborative mediums. I'm not very good at just sitting on my own in a room, which is a problem for a writer. With theatre you get to be part of a company and create something together, which is tangible but also ephemeral because it's primarily about the live experience.

Q What does a working day look like for you? A A lot of procrastinating, unfortunately

but I'm trying to develop better routines. I try and get up early, go to my workspace, go to the gym and then eat chocolate the rest of the day, because...balance.

W

omen in Revolt! is an exhibition of feminist art in the UK from 1970 to 1990. It explores how interconnected networks of women used radical ideas and rebellious methods to make an invaluable contribution to British culture. Showcasing work by over 100 women artists and collectives living and working in the UK, this is the first major survey of its kind. Painting, drawing, photography, textiles, printmaking, film, sculpture, and archival materials are brought together to map a landscape of creative practice forged against a backdrop of extreme social, economic, and political change. As well as celebrating the work of well-known artists such as Sonia Boyce, Susan Hiller, Chila Kumari Singh Burmanand Linder, Women in Revolt! platforms many women who despite long careers have been largely left outside the artistic narratives of the time. Shown in XXX IMAGE CAPTION XXX a major institutional exhibition for the first time areworks by Poulomi Desai and Shirley Cameron, among many others. The exhibition begins with the first women’s liberation conference in the UK, Miss World protests, and the formation of the Brixton Black Women’s Group. Artists such as Margaret Harrison, Penny Slinger and Monica Sjöö subvert the expected roles of women in society, while Kate Walker, Monica Ross and Su Richardson worked collectively on a postal art project, demonstrating how communities of women found ways to work collaboratively without formal infrastructure. This period saw a dramatic evolution of the relationship between women, work, and

Frustration with an expectation of domestic labour is the subject of work by Bobby Baker, posters by See Red Women’s Workshop and photography by Alexis Hunter, while The Hackney Flashers and Tina Keane consider the social and political implications of raising children. Sculptures by Rita McGurn and Elizabeth Radcliffe offer glamorous imagined images of the self, using techniques like crochet: often underappreciated because of their connection to domestic labour. photography and film from artists and musicians like Marianne Elliott-Said (aka Poly Styrene), The Neo Naturists, and Gina Birch. The consideration of sex in the practice of artists is also explored, from Cosey Fanni Tutti’s performance work to Jill Westwood’s Potent Female, 1983. Protest led by women is a core theme throughout the show. Banners, posters, and journals from the Greenham Common and Section 28 protests, and antiracism and AIDS campaigns are accompanied by documentary photography from Format Photography Agency, Mumtaz Karimjee, Bhajan Hunjan and Caroline Coon, affirming women’s central role in this activism. The impact of women artists who were involved in key movements like the BLK Art Group and the advocacy group and archive Panchayat is explored, as well as their role in the first National Black Art Convention in 1982 and ongoing contribution to British Black and South Asian feminist art discourses. Alongside works by key figures like Lubaina Himid, Sutapa Biswas, Claudette Johnson, Pratibha Parmar and Rita Keegan are works which are being specially conserved for the exhibition such as Nina Edge’s Snakes and Ladders 1985, an installation made of batik on paper and ceramics, which despite featuring on the cover of fellow exhibitor Maud Sulter’s landmark 1990 book Passion: Discourses on Blackwomen’s Creativity, has not been shown in over three decades. The exhibition closes with work made towards the end of the Thatcher administration, focusing on women’s response to Section 28, the visibility of lesbian communities and the AIDS epidemic by artists including Del LaGrace Volcano, Tessa Boffin and Jill Posener.

“This autumn they explore the crosscurrents between classical music and jazz”

ALICE SARA OTT © NAGY ATTILA

JOURNEY into SOUND The Philharmonia Orchestra is a jewel in the UK's cultural crown

S

ince it was founded in 1945, the Philharmonia Orchestra has been one of the jewels in the UK’s cultural crown. And if you live within travelling distance of the Southbank Centre, a few minutes’ walk from Waterloo, Embankment or Charing Cross, you’re in the enviable position of being able to pop in on a Thursday or a Sunday and hear these 80 fantastic musicians perform live in the Royal Festival Hall. This autumn they explore the crosscurrents between classical music and jazz in their series Let Freedom Ring: Celebrating the Sounds of America. On Thursday 9 November there’s Duke

Ellington’s tribute to Martin Luther King, music from George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and a Violin Concerto by Wynton Marsalis, composed for soloist Nicola Benedetti. Stay behind or head to the Southbank Centre after dinner for a free 10pm performance by the Philharmonia Big Band, featuring the orchestra’s irrepressible Principal Conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali on drum kit. The series continues with an evening of symphonic music by the late jazz great Wayne Shorter, featuring an incredible line-up of his former collaborators including singer Esperanza Spalding and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane. On 23 November, you can hear music by William Grant Still and Margaret Bonds, two Black American composers who deserve a wider audience

outside the US, alongside songs by Gershwin (including Summertime), performed by American singer Julia Bullock. Then Let Freedom Ring closes with Dvorák’s everpopular New World Symphony. The Philharmonia’s 3pm matinee concerts are the perfect way to brighten up a Sunday afternoon – they finish at around 5pm so you can head out for a meal beforehand or afterwards, or just catch a train home in time for tea. They’re also a great way to introduce children to the amazing sound of a live orchestra – the Philharmonia welcomes children aged 7+ to all their concerts. This winter, take your pick from Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with soloist Daniil Trifonov on Sunday 26 November, Dvorák’s Violin Concerto and music from Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Sleeping Beauty on Sunday 3 December, or music by Shostakovich and Richard Strauss on 4 February. In 2024, the Philharmonia’s season continues with music from Mozart to Mahler. Piano fans are particularly spoiled for choice, with performances featuring Dame Mitsuko Uchida, Bruce Liu, Alexandre Kantorow, and Alice Sara Ott in the UK premiere of a new Piano Concerto by Bryce Dessner. Joyful return

Cirque du Soleil’s iconic Alegria is back in 2024 with a brand new reinterpretation

C

irque du Soleil returns to London to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally acclaimed classic Alegría from 11 January at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. This limited series of performances will mark the European Premiere of the revival production of Alegría, a creative reinterpretation of the 1994 touring show in a whole new light. First premiered in 1994, Alegría has become one of the most beloved Cirque du Soleil shows by mesmerising over 14 million spectators in 255 cities across 40 countries until the end of its 19year world tour in 2013. Its original production performed five successful engagements in London from 1998, including four residencies at the Royal Albert Hall, making London the city Alegría has visited the most in the world. In 2019, Alegría was revived and creatively reinterpreted in a new light, ensuring that all its components – stage direction, music, acrobatics, sets, costumes, lighting and makeup designs – would be as inspiring for today’s audiences as they were at the time of the original creation. Re-energised by an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers, Alegría remains timeless and imbued with a joyous magical feeling. “We are thrilled to be bringing the revival of our classic Alegría to the Royal Albert Hall, the most popular Cirque du Soleil production ever in London with over 625,000 spectators across five visits. We are proud to have concluded an additional five-year agreement with the Royal Albert Hall for the presentation of our touring shows,” says Duncan J. Fisher, President – Touring Shows, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. Undeniably the most iconic Cirque du Soleil production, Alegría (‘joy’ in Spanish) is an all-time classic reimagined for a new generation to fall in love with. An immersive

“Expect an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers”

experience, Alegría whisks audiences away to a mystical world sprinkled with visual poetry and acrobatic extravagance. At the heart of a once-glorious kingdom that has lost its king, Alegría witnesses the power struggle at play between the old order and the youth in their quest for hope and renewal. As the court jester clumsily tries to take the throne, a growing desire for change emerges from the street to shake the status quo and bring joy to the world. With its unforgettable soundtrack, exciting acrobatics, surreal costume designs, vibrant set and playful humour, Alegría touches the soul and lives up to its global reputation of quintessential Cirque du Soleil spectacle. Cirque du Soleil started its muchloved annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996, becoming a staple of entertainment at the famous London venue as it becomes a permanent big top for over two months each year. cirquedusoleil.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“Vivid storytelling and the power of imagination create a world of suspense and atmosphere”

MARK HAWKINS AS THE ACTOR

Backstage to

centre stage In conversation with Richmond Theatre’s Mark Hawkins, who is starring as The Actor in the UK Tour of The Woman in Black

T

he legendary production of Susan Hill’s chilling ghost story has been seen by over seven million people worldwide and comes to Richmond Theatre direct from London’s West End, after an incredible 33 year run at the Fortune Theatre.

Q You’re no stranger to Richmond Theatre, can you give us a little bit of history about your relationship with the venue? A I have worked at Richmond Theatre for ten years now, mainly as a Box Office Sales Assistant but I also have roles in a few different departments. Sometimes I work with the stage crew on get-ins and get-outs for various shows and I’m one of the tour guides here. All in all, I know this theatre very well.

Q You played The Actor in the West End previously, what is it about The Woman in Black that made you want to return to the show? A It’s one of my favourite plays and lots of fun to perform, because it uses vivid storytelling and the power of imagination to create a world of suspense and atmosphere. The play means a great deal to me, and I’ve always wanted the opportunity to revisit the role. Q When you reach Richmond, will you have lots of support from friends and family who will come and see the show? A I definitely will! Everybody has been really excited and very supportive; they’re all planning to come and watch. Before the cast was announced I had some fun moments selling tickets for The Woman in Black at the box office, not being able to let on that I will be in the show. It’s going to be such a special week to be able to play a theatre I know so well, and an amazing full circle moment to be on the stage here at Richmond Theatre.

T H E WO M A N I N B L AC K will play at Richmond Theatre from 14 – 18 November. Book your tickets from ATGTICKETS.COM/Richmond

ABSOLUTELY eats out…

“Advice for anyone who’s not sure what to order: have a bit of everything”

CARAVAN Granary Square’s trailblazer

aravan was one of Granary Square’s first eateries and it remains as exciting as ever. Busy and buzzing, this allday eaterie is spacious and fun, with a real dedication to excellent food. There are big tables for groups and small tables for couples, and the vibe is informal, sociable and relaxed. Caravan was one of the original small plates restaurants, responsible partly for the way we all eat now, and

DECOR the “well-travelled” all-day menu offers advice for anyone who’s not sure what to order: “have a bit of everything”. So that’s what we do. From the small plates list there’s crispy chill salt tofu with baby spinach, salted black beans and sesame – we’re advised to mix the whole thing up, smashing the block of tofu with the back of a spoon. It’s a delicious, salty and spicy mix, while spiced cauliflower with harissa, tahini and pomegranate is an impressively browned whole cauliflower, crumbly and laced with silky tahini sauce.

Industrial chic, Granary Square style

PRICE Small plates £5-£12; large plates £17- £23

Broken lamb meatballs with chermoula, aubergine, tahini, labneh and pickled red onion aren’t really meatballs at all, but flavouful crumbles of spiced meat. From the large plates menu we choose crispy sea bream with Thai style salad, green mango nam phrik, peanuts and Thai herbs, which is an instant burst of Thailand’s freshest, zingiest flavours, with crisp textures, sharp, citrussy notes and fiery chilli slices. And then there’s a bowl of burnt stem broccoli with charred sweet potato, spiced black bean salsa, green chutney and coconut yoghurt that’s deliciously caramelised and blackened. For two of us, this is quite a feast, but we’re still up for pudding – especially the caramelised brioche with miso caramel, vanilla ice cream and basil cress. It’s a sort of ice cream on toast idea, but impossibly delicious, and the herby basil is a stroke of genius. Cold brew tiramisu puts Caravan’s own famous coffee to good use too. No wonder the brand continues to grow – a new branch has just opened in Covent Garden, so we’ll look forward to visiting that.

“The traditional method of grilling meat over a hot grill in the centre of the table”

Table SERVICE Welcoming Kensington's first Korean barbecue restaurant, KGK

S

izzle on down to KGK, the first Korean grill in the Kensington area and the only Korean restaurant in the locale offering an Omakase dining experience. Omakase literally means ‘I leave it up to you,’ so diners leave it up to the chef to select and serve seasonal specialities. Get ready to flip meats on a grill, drink Korean traditional soju or wine to taste.

KOREAN DINING KGK offers a journey into Korean BBQ culture. Each table has an inbuilt tabletop style grill for a traditional Korean BBQ of grilling meat, fish and vegetables over a hot grill.

LETTUCE LOVE A must-try is Ssam, lettuce, and perilla leaves used to wrap meats, served with assorted sauces. A traditional Korean meal will balance out the sweet flavours of the marinated meat by eating fresh greens in-between.

JOURNEY THROUGH KOREAN DINING CULTURE KGK’s menu explores traditional Korean dishes throughout from the appetisers, try

out the various Sang Cha lim – a decadent set of dishes including japchae, seasonal pickled vegetables, and jeon. A La Carte main dishes include KGK signature Kalbi – a dry aged, then 48h marinated short rib grilled on the table top.

SOJU & KOREAN REFRESHMENTS Say a cheers with soju, a historical rice based spirt made in Korea. The KGK bill will be delivered with two traditional Korean drinks sikhye rice punch and soojunggwa.

SIDE DISHES AND MARINADES ARE A BIG DEAL Korean culture loves side dishes known as Banchan, plenty of side dishes are considered a way to season and flavour throughout the meal. mjang is a musttry, an essential Korean marinade.

BUILD YOUR KOREAN CREW Fancy trying out an experiential food experience? Savouring a Korean meal is more of a fun group or family outing. KGK offers lunchtime set menus between £22-25; Korean salads, a choice of Bulgogi (marinated beef), Bibimbap, rice/soup and seasonal dessert like Soybean ice-cream. A vegan menu that is reminiscent of a day at a Buddhist temple will include hot stone rice dishes. The A La Carte comes in at around £65.00 per head and the pièce de résistance the Chef’s Omakase experience.

Chermoula Cauliflower Galette Serves 4-6 A simple but beautiful centrepiece, this galette is a great way to celebrate cauliflower. The recipe will work with one medium to large cauliflower, but if you have a couple of different types, that’s even better. From purple and golden to the psychedelic romanesco, cauliflowers are available in many beautiful variations, and this zesty Middle Eastern marinade brings out the best in all of them.

INGREDIENTS • 500g (1lb 2oz) • Cauliflower florets • 300g (10½oz) shopbought shortcrust pastry • Plain flour, for dusting • 70g (2½oz) vegan fetastyle cheese,

crumbled

• Plant-based cream, for brushing • Chopped pistachios, to garnish • ½ bunch coriander, chopped • 1 teaspoon freshly chopped oregano leaves • 20g (¾oz) preserved lemon, deseeded and

roughly chopped

• 2 garlic cloves • 5½ tablespoons olive oil • 1 teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon ground turmeric • ½ tablespoon caster sugar

METHOD 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F/gas mark 4. 2 To make the chermoula marinade, put all the ingredients except the sugar in a blender or food processor and blend in bursts, then stir in the sugar until it dissolves. If you prefer, you can use a stick blender or do it by hand. Simply chop the herbs, preserved lemon and garlic to a fine, even consistency and combine with the remaining chermoula ingredients to form a chunky paste. 3 Arrange the cauliflower florets on a roasting tray. Pour over the marinade and toss to coat, then roast for 8–10 minutes until starting to go golden. 4 Meanwhile, roll out the pastry on a large piece of baking parchment to form an even circle, 3mm (1/8in) thick, dusting with flour as necessary. Prick the middle of the pastry with a fork a few times. 5 Arrange half of the roasted cauliflower in a circle on the pastry, leaving a border of about 5cm (2in) of pastry around the edges. Sprinkle over the vegan feta, then arrange the rest of the cauliflower on top. 6 Fold up the edges of the pastry around the cauliflower and brush with the plant-based cream. 7 Bake the galette for 25–30 minutes until golden and firm. 8 Garnish the galette with the pistachios and serve.

Vietnamese-style pulled oyster mushroom salad serves 2 This is our take on the classic Vietnamese chicken salad goi ga, replacing the chicken with pulled or shredded king oyster mushrooms. Oyster mushrooms are particularly useful in plant-based cooking, as they have a mild taste but a meaty texture that holds flavour well. Paired with this crunchy fragrant salad and its acidic dressing, the result is a satisfying dish that’s full of flavour.

INGREDIENTS • 300g (10½oz) king oyster mushrooms, grated on the large side of a box grater • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil • 1 tablespoon hoi sin sauce • Salt and freshly ground black pepper For the dressing: • Zest and juice of 2 limes • 1 teaspoon miso paste • 1 tablespoon caster sugar • ½ teaspoon salt • 1 bird’s eye chilli (red or green), sliced • 1 garlic clove, finely grated

For the salad: • ¼ daikon (about 150g/5½oz), julienned • 2 carrots, julienned, or 80g (2¾oz) • Carrot & lime leaf pickles (see page 185) • 1 small cucumber, halved lengthways then sliced at an angle • 4 spring onions, finely sliced • 1 tablespoon torn mint leaves • 100g (3½oz) coriander, torn To garnish: • Handful of pistachios, chopped • Edible flowers (optional)

METHOD 1 In a large bowl, combine the oyster mushrooms with the smoked paprika, then season with salt and pepper.. 2 Heat the sesame oil in a frying pan or wok over a medium heat. Add the mushrooms and sauté for 3 minutes, then add the hoi sin sauce. Stir and cook for 3 more minutes, until the mixture is thick and fragrant. Season to taste, then set aside. 3 To prepare the dressing, combine all the ingredients in a jar or bowl and shake or stir well until the sugar has dissolved. 4 For the salad, combine the julienned vegetables in a large bowl, then add the cucumber, spring onions, mint and coriander. Pour over the dressing and toss to combine. 5 Divide the salad between 2 bowls, then top with the warm oyster mushroom mixture. Garnish with a sprinkle of chopped pistachios, and some edible flowers, if you like.

“Perfect for a rainy Sunday lunch, yet special enough to serve at an occasion”

Ginger sticky toffee pudding With toffee sauce Serves 9 The ultimate comfort dessert, sticky toffee pudding is perfect for a rainy Sunday lunch, yet special enough to serve at an occasion. We’ve tried plenty of different recipes for sticky toffee pudding, experimenting with apple sauce or mashed bananas, before realising that dates are all we need to keep this dessert distinctively moist and soft. The ginger isn’t overpowering; it just adds a subtle undertone of gentle spice that works really well in this delicious pudding.

76

METHOD

INGREDIENTS • 140g (5oz) plant-based butter, plus extra for greasing • 375ml (12½fl oz) soy milk • 220g (8oz) dates, chopped • 1 teaspoon grated ginger • 140g (5oz) soft dark brown sugar • 225g (8oz) self-raising flour • 2½ tablespoons date molasses • 2 teaspoons ground ginger • ½ tablespoon bicarbonate of soda • 1 teaspoon baking powder • Plant-based cream, ice cream or custard, to serve For the toffee sauce: • 40g (1½oz) plant-based butter • 100g (3½oz) soft dark brown sugar • 2 tablespoons date molasses • ¼ teaspoon ground ginger • ½ tablespoon cornflour • 150ml (¼ pint) plant-based cream • Pinch of salt

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F/ gas mark 4. Grease a 20cm (8in) square baking tin and line with baking parchment. 2 Heat the milk, dates and ginger in a small saucepan over a low heat for a few minutes, whisking as they heat. The mixture should be thick and caramel coloured. Leave to rest in the pan. 3 In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a bowl using an electric whisk, whisk the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the flour and mix well to form a smooth batter. 4 Add the date molasses, ground ginger, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder to the saucepan containing the date mixture, and whisk to combine. Fold this date mixture into the bowl of batter, then pour into the prepared tin. Smooth the top and bake for 35 minutes until the centre of the pudding is well risen and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. 5 Meanwhile, make the toffee sauce. In a small saucepan over a low heat, combine the butter, sugar and date molasses for 3–5 minutes until you have a dark-coloured toffee sauce. Add the ginger and whisk through. 6 In a small bowl or mug, mix the cornflour with a splash of water to create a paste. Add this to the sauce, along with the cream and salt, and cook gently for 2 minutes more until thickened. 7 Once the pudding has finished baking, leave it to rest for 5 minutes, then spoon over enough of the toffee sauce to give it a thin, shiny coating. 8 Serve the pudding warm, with the rest of the toffee sauce in a jug on the side, along with plant- based cream, ice cream, custard or all three!

CALIFORNIA

SOUL How the newest London gin, Ginagain, was conceived in Santa Cruz, California

S

anta Cruz, California is best known in some circles for being the birthplace of O'Neill wetsuits in the 1950s, with its cold waters and laid back surfing vibe or for the Santa Cruz Skateboard brand, with its iconic logo and original shop, The Boardroom. In more recent years, the mountains that surround the coastal community have developed a reputation for awardwinning wine and the city has bloomed with tasting rooms, wine bars, celebrated restaurants, distilleries, breweries

78

and casual, dog-friendly beer gardens. Blended with artists, coffee shops and organic farms, Santa Cruz has become a buzzing young makers' market town. This youthful energy and confidence was the inspiration and catalyst for Rick Allen, founder of Ginagain, to take a chance on an idea he had been toying with for 20 odd years. A gin company. While starting a gin brand in the USA is not impossible, the drink is not a staple of the American bar scene, where bourbon and Coke are more likely ordered over a gin and tonic. He felt that England, with a deeper appreciation for

the spirit, was a better place to begin. California is famous for a few things: the flower power movement, sunny beaches, Hollywood and movies, wine and its economy. In the 1920s, oranges were second only to oil in terms of income for the state. While that agricultural income has significantly decreased, the orange is still a staple of Californian life. Growing up on the edge of the Central Valley, where most of the California's northern citrus farms can be found, Rick wanted to incorporate the fruit into a London Dry gin for a distinctive signature flavour. he retreated with his partner, Stephanie, an Australian-born Brit, to their little A-Frame cabin in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Weekends days were spent renovating the cabin and in the evenings they would set up a still and test out gin recipes, tweaking them by a few grams for each ingredient until after more than 60 attempts they felt like they had it almost right. They partnered with a distillery in Northamptonshire and produced their first run with organic Californian orange peel imported specifically for Ginagain in February of this year. The distinctive flavour of the orange is brought out in the gin during the distillation process where it sits in the basket and is infused with a spicy cubeb berry pepper for a subtle warm, but clearly juniper forward taste. The addition of the orange during the distillation process, rather than afterwards, keeps the sweetness to a

low level and suits those who love a traditional London Dry with a twist. "We spent time gathering feedback and refining the taste so that it wasn't just our opinion that went into creating the flavour profile," says Stephanie, "so it has been a long process to get here but we think it will be a gin that people will want to return to time after time." Recently it scored a 93 when reviewed by the International Drink Specialists, an organisation comprised of various spirit awards judges who provide consulting services to distillers. In 2024 the pair plan to move to the UK so they can focus on expanding the brand with new flavour profiles, new markets and hopefully an award or two. "We were happily surprised when IDL rated it a 93, which, if it was given at a competition, would translate into a Silver or Gold." says Rick. "We're taking them up on their recommendation to enter it into several international competitions next year so we'll be interested to see how it fares" ginagain.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

ROSE GARDEN BALMAIN

Balmain Spring 2024 goes all out in celebrating the atelier's founder’s lifelong love of the rose, a flower that always held a special spot in Monsieur Balmain's many garden and couture designs. And just as it did in Pierre Balmain’s midcentury collections, a signature house motif, the petit pois (polka dot), weaves itself through these offerings, relying on a wide variety of sizes, colors, and materials. balmain.com

t’s always said that fashion is fickle. But the opposite is also true, because there are fashion brands that endure, defying the zeitgeist with iconic looks that continue to appeal. Think about the Chanel handbag, the Burberry trench, Levis 501s, and add to that list: the Terry de Havilland snakeskin platform. Because these 1970s shoes are still in production and the new AW23 collection is based on designs that date back to the originals. Terry de Havilland was the End End shoemaker who became known as the Rock’n’Roll cobbler and created metallic leather platforms worn by Bianca Jagger, David Bowie and Marianne Faithful. He was the man behind Tim Curry’s heels in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and his Kings Road shop Cobblers to the World defined the era of disco footwear. Despite the advent of punk killing off most of the market for sparkly heels at the end of the

1970s, he continued making shoes in various guises until a renewed interest in his early designs was sparked by Miu Miu famously copying his style for their 2003 campaign. After his death in 2019, the brand was taken over by Terry’s nephew Darren Spurling and his son Josh. Together they are reviving the brand and their new collection is based on all the old lasts. Darren explains: “Terry designed his first shoe in the early 70’s, a style which you can still buy in our Icons collection today. The Margaux Wedge, inspired by the model and actress Margaux Hemingway. This unique wedge is still part of our collection today and is reinvented and updated with each collection. The collection has his DNA and influence. The Margaux, Zia, Lena, all his original designs that have evolved with the times. When creating new styles we always refer to the archive designs to keep the heritage alive.” The best selling style is be the Zia Mid Gold

Platino, launched last year. It’s a fabulous duo of metallic gold and silver shades with a mid heel height designed, they claim, for comfort – although it’s important to remember that mid-heel in the de Havilland world is a matter of 11cm, perhaps with a 3cm platform. It’s all about the pitch, they say, which in this case is a net 9cm. Mid heel? In the de Havilland world, yes. Fans include Margot Robbie, Rita Ora, Lily Collins, Sienna Miller, Anya Taylor-Joy, Laura Whitmore and Amy Winehouse to name a few. The excellent craftsmanship remains, even though the new collection is made in Spain and not in Terry’s Hackney workshop. Shiny snakeskin leathers in bright colours, soft suedes and lots of metallics characterise the new collection, which looks as fresh today as it probably ever did. Long live Terry de Havilland. terrydehavilland.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

The treatment programme can combine a number of super technologies dependant upon your specific concerns such as Ultherapy, Exilis Elite radio frequency, Morpheus skin needling as well as tweaking with injectable enhancements where necessary, To give immediate & long-term results with minimal downtime. The skin will begin to

feel smoother and tighter after the first treatment and results will continue to improve for up to six months. The skin ageing process happens to everyone, and is a completely natural process. However, it can be very difficult for some people, and make them lose confidence in their appearance. As we get older, the production of collagen and elastin in our bodies slows, causing the common signs of skin ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles

and a loss of volume in the skin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that exist within many of the body’s tissues, including the skin, and gives structural support, strength, elasticity and durability to the skin.

ED light-therapy masks are everywhere at the moment. The A-list are obsessed with them, and if you’ve scrolled through Instagram recently you’ve probably noticed your favourite beauty influencer wearing one of the futuristic (if not slightly alarminglooking) devices. The best ones use red and near infrared LEDs (Light-Emitting Diodes) to target multiple skin concerns at once – including acne, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and pigmentation, and skin conditions such as rosacea. Being a busy mum, I love any beauty treatment that promises to deliver salonquality results at home. So I was excited to try the Boost LED Face Mask from The Light Salon. It uses a combination of near-infrared light to trigger the cell’s production of collagen and elastin, and red light to plump the complexion. Post-partum, my skin has been prone to hormonal breakouts and constant broken sleep has given me more lines than a supermarket checkout. LED light-therapy has been clinically proven to reduce fine lines, so I set about a diligent routine of wearing my mask five nights a week. After preparing my skin with The Light Salon’s Enzymatic Cleanser & Mask, Boost Cleanse & Recovery Spray, and Hydrating Peptide Serum, I’ve really enjoyed just lying there for 10 minutes and not being able to do anything at all. After two months of wearing the mask, I’m miraculously no longer suffering from as many hormonal breakouts. My complexion appears much more even and although my lines haven’t vanished, they definitely seem a little softer. THE LIGHT SALON £395

“Lasers vary greatly in quality, power, wavelength, pulse duration and other factors”

WELCOME TO

Laser season Dr Kim addresses four commonly asked questions to help you get the best out of your laser treatments

A

s soon as the leaves start turning, laser clinics will start to prepare for their busiest time of year. Sun exposure should be avoided, so this is the ideal time to address the spider veins or bikini line that bothered you all summer. Researching laser treatments can be daunting with a wealth of choice of technologies, techniques and prices. This is also an area where what worked for your friend may not be appropriate for you. A new generation of versatile medical lasers incorporating multiple technologies means more options for different skin and hair types. Some lasers (eg diode lasers) are only used for hair removal, but mixed technology lasers (eg the Quanta Duetto or Thunder MT) can also be used for skin rejuvenation, spider veins and pigmentation.

Does laser only work if you have light skin and dark hair? This may still be true for some machines but the latest Mixed Technology lasers can be adjusted for precise use on all skin types. Lasers vary greatly in quality, power, wavelength, pulse duration and other factors. Different skin types and concerns are treated with different wavelengths, either separately or in combination.

Are laser treatments painful?

Laser and IPL treatments have the reputation for being extremely uncomfortable. The good news is that most medical lasers will have integrated cooling devices to ensure that these treatments are an option for even the most sensitive patient.

Does laser damage your skin?

Medical lasers are highly specific for their target and your practitioner is able to

programme the machine for the precise concern to be treated. Avoiding the surrounding skin significantly reduces the risk of complications. Different laser wavelengths are used to treat similar but different concerns (like an area of spider veins where some veins are blue and some are red), so being able to switch between wavelengths ensures your safety in the process. It is very important to follow instructions, avoiding sun exposure and even fake tan so that your practitioner has an accurate idea of your skin tone. Some redness or irritation may be seen temporarily, but lasting side-effects are rare.

How many treatments do you need for long-term results with hair reduction?

Hair grows in cycles and lasers only work on part of that cycle. After each treatment your hair will become thinner and lighter and you’ll need a course of 6 to 10 treatments, depending on the pigmentation in your hair. Hair regrowth after a period of time is not uncommon, particularly in young people, and top-up treatments are often required. For pigmentation or spider veins, a course of 3 to 6 treatments is recommended. Dr Kim Prescott practices aesthetic medicine in Surrey and London as well as training, lecturing and working in clinical research. You can email her on drkim@psmd.co.uk to enquire about laser clinics that might be suitable for you. 01372 810850 • drkpclinic.co.uk

Carly Glendinning tries on-demand Pilates, yoga, wellness, and nutrition platform Live Brave

E

ven though my daughter is now two and a half, I’ll admit that my pelvic floor probably isn’t as strong as it should be post-birth. I know I should be doing more pelvic floor muscle training, but I’ll hold my hands up and admit that I'm not very good at remembering when I’m busy. Helping to improve your breathwork, core strength, and posture, a combination of Pilates and yoga can be just as effective for your pelvic floor. However, getting out to classes regularly is a challenge with a toddler, and I’ll often prioritise going to the gym. So I was excited to try Live Brave, an on-demand platform offering day-by-day Pilates and yoga classes alongside

wellness and nutrition advice. Live Brave was founded by Lou Buttler, a qualified Polestar and Stott Pilates instructor (and wife of England cricketer Jos Buttler). She first discovered Pilates after her mum had chemotherapy and reconstruction surgery and was amazed at the incredible mental and physical benefits it had to offer. Her signature teaching style conditions the body with small movements that build strength and prioritise alignment. With 700+ sessions, the platform is super easy to use and I love how the classes are day-by-day and tailored to your particular level or stage. There’s programmes aimed at beginner, intermediate, and

advanced, and specialised programmes for everything from menopause, to osteoporosis. There’s also a section for pre and post-natal as well as functional yoga. What I have really enjoyed though is the ‘Lifestyle Challenge’, a five week programme that gives you daily suggestions for fitness sessions, as well as nutritious recipes and mindfulness audios, all put together by Live Brave’s expert team. The best bit? That I can easily do the fitness sessions in my daughter’s nap time and I don’t even need to leave the house. GOLD STANDARD

VisitHealth are pioneering a new model of on-demand, high-tech healthcare for Londoners

T

his autumn, the launch of VisitHealth’s flagship clinic has set a new gold standard for London’s worldleading private healthcare market. The clinic, located in an iconic West London building, has been opened by the VisitHealth team to provide the ultimate in personalised, accessible, coordinated, confidential healthcare to patients. Their doors are open seven days a week, 12 hours a day, with plans to extend to 24 hours from early 2024. No GP referrals are required to access the services, and there are no long waiting lists: patients can walk in to receive a rapid clinical assessment, after which they can proceed directly to testing or same-day treatment as required. The luxury clinic houses several of the most advanced imaging technologies on

the market. These include a uniquely lightweight 3.5kg portable x-ray generator (The FDR Xair), a world-leading open MRI solution (The Oasis Velocity), and a top of the range ultrasound device with AI and ML technology (the Arietta 850 with DeepInsight). Their team of specialist doctors, general practitioners, nurses and imaging specialists are available to deliver the following services, on-site and on-demand: • Imaging services (x-ray, Ultrasound, MRI, endoscopy) • Treatment of minor injuries (burns, cuts, sprains, fractures) • Urgent care • Treatment of common illnesses • Cardiac and laboratory diagnostics • Specialist consultations • Vaccinations • IV therapy • Inpatient day care • Physiotherapy

VisitHealth also operates a mobile ‘hospital at home’ service, and can bring their portable diagnostic devices and treatments (including x-ray, ultrasound and ECG) to patients’ homes, hotels or workplaces according to their convenience. This service, which has been operational since 2017, is popular with busy professionals, families, the elderly, people with mobility problems, and those who prioritise discretion. VisitHealth’s focus is on delivering personalised treatment plans tailored to individual needs and lifestyles while maintaining the utmost respect for patient privacy. The team believes in empowering patients to make informed healthcare decisions, and in making the most sophisticated medical technologies accessible to everyone who needs them. Dr John Quinn, Medical Director at VisitHealth, says:

“The launch of VisitHealth’s clinic is a landmark moment for the UK private healthcare sector. Dream DRESS On-trend, elegant and

feminine designs for modern brides from Rosa Clará

R

osa Clará, internationally renowned designer in the bridal fashion sector, celebrates femininity and magic in her new 2024 collection: modern and elegant designs are setting the trends, with pure lines and high quality fabrics that shun artifice and accentuate the bride's personality and figure. Rosa Clará encourages the bride to be herself on her special day, proposing dreamy looks for each moment of the wedding.

ROSA CLARÁ 2024: MINIMALISM AND LIGHTNESS Rosa Clará 2024 collection champions plain dresses with pure lines and extremely lightweight interior structuring. A polished look, crafted in different types of crêpe and featuring crisp detailing such as drapes, knots, scalloped necklines and delicate lace inlays to enhance the feminine form. Incredibly flattering and seemingly simple, these dresses can be incorporated into the multilook trend, with the potential to add pieces such as an off-shoulder cuff neckline, tulle overskirt or delicate embroidered cape. This collection represents a softened silhouette, with designs that lengthen the waist with floral lace drifting down from the bodice through to the skirt, emphasising the effect. Mermaid-style dresses are ever-more sensual and flattering, in lace and guipure lace, boasting transparency, scalloped designs and wavy motifs that accentuate the figure. These can be complemented by garments including lace sleeves, offshoulder straps, jackets and overskirts.

The lace bodices with beadwork are another highlight; intricately worked with linear and floral motifs and incredibly feminine with new strapless, straight or sweetheart necklines, as well as the more current square or crew necklines. These are coupled with spectacular couture skirts or sheer tulle skirts, now lighter, with fewer layers and less structuring. rosa-clara.com Represented by Hayley Hosking in Wales & Southern England 07432283824; h.hosking@rosaclara.es A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

The

DREAM DO How extensions at Anthony Laban are the solution to all your hair problems

F

or many years, hair extensions have had a bad name. Sure, when they first came out 30 years ago, they were synthetic pieces of hair glued in. But they have come such a long way since then. Racoon International have pioneered this change within the extension industry, and we are so excited to be working with them. Not only are they the only extension company that have the ISO9001 award (which is an incredibly high standard to adhere to), they are also the only hair extension company to be independently trichologist checked and approved every six months, to ensure that no damage to the hair or scalp is caused while wearing their extensions. This, along with their incredible quality of hair, makes them the dream extensions to work with. Whether you’re wanting to make a small tweak in length and thickness, or if you’re wanting that waist-length hair you’ve always dreamed of, there are multiple application methods to choose from. Not all methods are suitable for every client, so it’s important to be open to ideas about what kind of extensions you’d like. The first step in achieving your dream ‘do is to book in for a consultation with our extension specialist Taelor. During this appointment you will discuss all options suitable for you and talk through the

116

maintenance to make sure that extensions are the right thing for you. If you decide to go ahead, you will be colour-matched for a seamless blend, then get booked in for your application. If you get your hair coloured, make sure your colour is fresh before your consultation. The next step is application day. Once the extensions are in, they will be shaped and styled to suit you. Should you have any questions on styling this is a perfect time to ask. After this, we can be contacted at any time should you have any questions about your new ‘do, and we love seeing you back for your first wash and blow-dry in salon with us.

How to care for them?

Why get extensions?

How often do I need to come into salon to have them re-done?

There are many different reasons to get extensions. The most common one is for making your hair thicker and fuller. A lot of people lack volume and density in their hair and this is a great way to achieve it without causing any damage. Extensions can also be used for adding length to your hair. Whether that’s just an extra inch, or an extra four. Another great use of extensions is for ‘Hair In Recovery’ – this is a system exclusive to Racoon, where you can apply super tiny extensions to hair recovering from medical hair loss. If you’ve had chemo, alopecia or even female pattern baldness, this is the method for you.

Looking after your new ‘do can take a little bit more effort. Most methods need drying to make sure there’s no moisture contamination so that your hair lasts you as long as possible. Taelor will talk you through the aftercare during your consultation to make sure it’s something you’re comfortable with, so don’t worry if you have no knowledge of looking after them currently.

How long do they last?

As long as you follow correct aftercare, your Racoon hair is guaranteed for a whole year. This makes it incredible value for money.

Maintenance is different for every client. Some need to come every four weeks, some every 10 weeks. Your appointment can vary between one hour and eight hours, although on average is around two hours. It’s important you can make this a part of your schedule, as it’s a vital part of keeping your hair and scalp healthy. Under cover How Amelie's Follies' dedicated personal shopping experience sets the store apart

I

n the last 20 years, Nappy Valley has felt much more continental with new businesses opening on the Northcote Road and its sister street, Webb’s Road. With independent coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants and shops hailing from Belgium, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Scandinavia and of course the UK, this is one side of London where everyone feels at home. One shop has been embodying that continental feel for the last 20 years, offering local women a wide range of lingerie, from sexy to sensible, lacy to smooth, sporty to maternity: Amélie’s Follies. Not only will you find bras in 57 different sizes here, but the staff strives to provide professional fitting and measuring and help every woman find the most comfortable underwear for any occasion. And always with a smile. Going on holiday? They have an

incredible choice of swimwear and cruise wear all year round. Want to snuggle up in a warm set of PJs or look fabulous in a silk negligée? They also sell nightwear. And hosiery. And beach bags. And dressing gowns. And if they don’t have it, they will do their best to order it for you. Generations of customers have enjoyed the dedication and professional, yet friendly, approach of Amélie’s Follies’ staff. Numerous mothers have brought their teenage daughters here to be advised and fitted and take the embarrassment and shyness away from buying a bra for the first time. This is a shop that chooses not to sell online as, in the words of one of the owners, ‘the service we offer here is not one that cannot be replicated online. This dedicated personal shopping experience is what sets us apart’. And customers agree as they have never

stopped supporting this local business. It was after the first lockdown that they decided to take that personal touch even further by operating on a ‘by appointment only’ system which has proved a huge success. ‘Most women dread underwear shopping, they can find it extremely intimidating. Knowing that they will have a dedicated fitter for their visit, as well as a more intimate setting has been a game changer for them as well as for us. We look forward to another 20 years of helping women find the perfect fit for their bra in a fun environment and above all making them feel better, more confident and more comfortable in their skin, literally’ the owner says. Queen of

PARTIES Tracy Lavin, international luxury wedding and party planner, on life in the events industry

R

aised in Ireland and now living in leafy Wilmslow in Cheshire, multi-award-winning events planner Tracy Lavin has made a name for herself. The founder and chief executive of Tracy Lavin Events has dazzled clients and celebrity guests in venues such as Kensington Palace, Soho Farmhouse, The Savoy and international locations as far away as Mauritius. Tracy trained at one of Ireland’s top catering colleges, did an advanced business management course at Manchester University and then worked her way up to general management in four and fivestar hotels in the UK before setting up her own corporate events and luxury wedding and party planning company. A self-confessed perfectionist, for Tracy success is all about taking care of the little details and building up a strong and reliable team that she knows she can count on. “I have been lucky to learn from and work with some of the best in the business,” she says. “It can be a very stressful job,

but I do absolutely love it.” As for down time, her phone is never off the hook, but she makes sure to balance work and lifestyle. “It can be hard – this industry means we have to work late nights, long weekends, or pull off last-minute events, but my friends and family understand.” From corporate celebrations on exotic islands and private countryside festivals to marquee parties and exclusive weddings,

Tracy knows how to impress when it comes to putting on a party. “The key ingredients are to be ahead of the trend. We love creating unique designs inspired by fashion and music plus you need surprise elements along the way,” she says. “If you have those, plus a good photographer and videographer to capture the memories, you’ve got yourself a great event.” Tracy and her team have created some incredible events. “A stand-out event was a dazzling destination wedding over three days in Majorca, at a 5-star hotel near Palma for 120 people” says Tracy. “It included a pre-wedding lunch for guests at a seafront restaurant, main wedding day with full theming and décor, entertainment in the day and evening including fireworks plus a post-wedding party at a private beach club with local entertainment and aerial artists flown in from Germany. We managed the whole wedding from start to finish including creating moodboards with colour schemes, booking all suppliers – venues, florist, cake designer, luxury stationary, celebrant, all live entertainment, transport, stage and lighting technicians, shipping bespoke made items from the UK and sourcing personalised favours from Italy. One of the highlights was the installation of 8,400 white ceiling balloons for the evening party as this was never done before in the hotel or on the whole island. This is why we love our job!" tracylavinevents.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Farnham Castle is the most incredible backdrop for celebrations of all kinds

F

arnham Castle is a stunning, historic, multi-awardwinning venue. Set in five acres of beautiful grounds, it overlooks the historic market town of Farnham, on the Surrey Hampshire border, in the glorious Surrey Hills. It’s the most impressive venue if you’re dreaming of somewhere unique, and it offers couples and their guests exclusive use of the Gatehouse, Pembroke Room, Great Lawn, Stone Hall, magnificent Great Hall, with imposing feature fireplace and stained-glass windows, together

with different ceremony options, including The Lantern Hall for Civil ceremonies, The Norman Chapel for Religious ceremonies, and the Great Lawn and Rose Garden for Outdoor ceremonies. All are set within the castle, providing the most incredible backdrop for celebrations, and the most beautiful atmosphere to exchange vows and create memories. Following the ceremony, a drinks and canapé reception will entice guests on to the lawns, before enjoying one of the outstanding three or four course dining menus, created by Farnham Castle’s head chef and his exceptional team, who love to use the finest, locally sourced ingredients. Chosen menus are paired with

Champagnes and wines, selected from international wine lists, and the well-stocked Gallery Bar, perfectly positioned overlooking the Great Hall, offers everyone’s favourite drinks and cocktails throughout the celebrations. Farnham Castle can accommodate up to 210 day guests and up to 320 evening guests, and is the perfect choice for a wedding, from ceremony, to reception, to party. After the party, couples can retreat and relax overnight in the beautiful Guildford Suite, while guests stay onsite in one of 33 characterful en-suite bedrooms, providing accommodation for 75 family and friends. Everyone comes together again the following morning in the Library, for a Farnham Castle Breakfast, and to share stories from the day before. Barn dance For an elegant winter wedding, choose Bury

PHOTOGRAPHY – EBOURNE IMAGES (EBOURNEIMAGES.COM)

Manor Barn in the South Downs National Park

T

he venue is an impressive Tudor barn, set in the picturesque, rural village of Bury, near Pulborough in the heart of the South Downs National Park. In addition to the stunning riverside setting and amazing views, the grounds of Bury Manor Barn include several distinct areas including an amphitheatre which looks across the river Arun to Amberley Mount, a walled garden, a versatile covered terrace, a woodland area with a wonderful avenue of beech trees, and a weeping willow pond and jetty. Bury Manor Barn is a venue for all seasons, each with distinct appeal – but here we highlight the beautiful black-tie winter wedding of Rose and Ross last November. A roaring fire was lit for the wedding ceremony and with plenty of twinkling fairy

lights and candlelight, the barn was the perfect spot for a cosy, elegant winter wedding. The barn was styled with romantic draping, numerous church candles in glass jars, tealights, oodles of fairy lights and beautiful floristry. For the wedding breakfast the couple chose abundant canapés and amazing feasting platters followed by tasty pizzas in the evening (from bespoke built woodfired Land Rover Defender pizza ovens) all courtesy of Streetfood & More. A photobooth and live band completed the evening festivities.

WHERE TO WED

Civil ceremonies, with seating for 130 friends and loved ones, take place in the beautiful inner barn or, in warmer months, outside in the amphitheatre with stunning views across the Wildbrooks and River Arun to Amberley

Castle and the South Downs beyond. For those who prefer church weddings, there is a 12th century church next door to the venue with its own private gate leading onto the covered terrace with sweeping views across the river Arun and South Downs- the perfect spot for a Champagne reception. Also popular are celebrant-led ceremonies, which can easily be accommodated.

A SPACE TO CELEBRATE

Receptions are hosted in either the Outer or Inner Barn. The Outer Barn can seat 140 nearest and dearest around trestle tables, or 120 seated at banquet rounds. The Inner Barn can seat a further 108 loved ones at banquet rounds if it’s not being used for the “I dos.” The 16th century barn structure is divided by a pretty glazed wall, and you have the freedom to decorate according to your chosen theme. There’s also a superb state-of-the-art LED lighting system in place for you to utilise. During your day you’ll have exclusive use of the barn, lower lawns, covered terrace, walled garden and woodland area. There’s a generous amount of time allocated for setting up and collection the following day. burymanorbarn.co.uk

ust off the King’s Road is a 67 sqm two bedroom bijou apartment that challenges modern design. Atelier Chelsea Design, founded by interiors aficionado Anca Enica, transformed this 19th century artist build with its unique Dutch architecture in the Chelsea Park Carlyle Conservation Area. Although Enica’s aesthetic vision is very contemporary, she opted to honour the building’s history and maintain an array of classic features such as the cornice and patinated Corston brass switches. The eight month project centred around maximising natural light and how it affects the mood of a space. Housing artwork from Singaporean designer Tay Bak Chiang and The Cube Gallery London, the apartment features natural materials and their textured surfaces, moulding light and shadow to form soft organic landscapes for the eyes to roam. The studio activated key structural work, opening up the living and kitchen areas which were previously two separate rooms. The new layout takes advantage of the southern light and alluring gardens, bringing the outside in. Enica was inspired by her extensive travels to China, Japan and South Korea, reflected in the red hues and soft beach shade of the kitchen. She worked in collaboration with Huma Kitchens in Italy to design this space, where the restored full length sash windows welcome copious light stretching through

to the hallway. Striking pieces pepper the kitchen such as the DCW Editions pendant above the worktop, reflecting the new space age movement to integrate modernity, and designed to light up a room like a shooting star. The living space boasts a Misura Emmer bookcase, Vincent van Duysen black coffee table dusted with items such as an Anissa Kermiche female torso, an Acquisitions fireplace, Soho Home sofa, Relic London artwork and wooden sculpture, and an understated rug by Nordic Knots. The adjacent and open dining area, showcasing a Tom Dixon table and chairs, is overlooked by a clean J Adams Luna pendant, again embracing the space age thread. Honouring a neutral palette with paintwork by French label Argile, the master bedroom boasts 3D wallpaper by new Swedish company BelarteSTUDIO, a Hope by Luceplan pendant, and Orluna downlighting. The second bedroom - with custom joinery by Neatsmith and a Neverending Glory La Scala L pendant by Lasvit - also acts as a study and library overlooking the road. Elsewhere, the master bathroom integrates a combination of Domus tiles, a Porcelanosa basin and microcement from Design Concrete. A former corporate lawyer, Anca yearned to travel the world and pursue an entrepreneurial path. She attended business school and co-founded a boutique business focused on educational travel whereby she connected with figures from all corners of the world, from Silicon Valley, Brazil and South Africa, to the UAE,

China and Japan, naturally accumulating a vast memory bank of cultural influences which now inform her work at Atelier Chelsea Design. Influenced by the simplicity and depth within the designs of Vincent van Duysen and Brigette Romanek, as well as industry powerhouses such as Constantin Brancusi, Pierre Paulin and George Zalszupin, she favours timeless aesthetics which champion functionality while celebrating architectural detail. Enica also runs an interior design community, Designeers, and a highly successful social platform, @Designeers.Club. The hallmark of Anca's work is a cultural symbiosis, where immaculate lines take centre stage. Her design philosophy is inspired by her eclectic international experiences, which seamlessly merge into unique sophistication and refinement. The Atelier's designs are a fusion of simplicity and luxury, expertly intertwined with the architecture of the building and the needs of her clients. At present, the Atelier undertakes a diverse range of projects, from providing clients with luxurious furniture pieces to full-scale architectural renovations. atelierchelseadesign.com

omewares emporium Graham and Green is set to celebrate 50 years of business in April next year. For a proudly independent, family-run brand, this is a very special milestone. On Easter Monday in 1974, Graham and Green began life in an old dairy on Elgin Crescent in London’s Portobello. Antonia Graham opened this first shop and filled it with kitchenware, baskets and plants she sourced from Covent Garden Flower Market. It proved so popular that she opened a second and third shop on the street, both brimming with fashion, lifestyle and homeware finds from her travels overseas. Today, the company is run by Antonia’s son Jamie (who was often found under the counter of the first store in his Moses basket) and his wife Lou. Alongside the Notting Hill store, which you’ll find in the same spot today, are four additional shops across the UK, plus a thriving online business. The brand’s flagship store in Bayswater

“Furniture, homeware and unique gifts that excite, inspire and bring joy” is the perfect place to showcase G&G’s growing collection of furniture, upholstery, lighting and home accessories. And it is large enough to accommodate a thriving trade department, too. The brand spread its wings further with a move to the West Country in 2016 by Jamie, Lou and son Max, prompting a new store and head office in Walcot Street in Bath’s artisan quarter – the perfect fit for a home from home outside London. Husband-and-wife duo Jamie and Lou remain true to the brand’s roots; their mission: to source the very best furniture, homeware and unique gifts that excite, inspire and bring joy. The secret of Graham and Green’s longevity and success is their unwavering dedication and passion for interiors, a joy found year after year discovering unique and eclectic pieces that combine craftsmanship, design and, quite often, a touch of playfulness. While you will always discover something beautiful for your home in their stores and website, G&G is particularly well-known for their heritage pieces - bone inlay and mother-

of-pearl furniture sourced and handmade from the same craftsmen in India for over 30 years. This season, these collections boast a more modern take with new intricate patterns and contemporary shapes, like the Zarina desk (pictured) and new Kaleidoscope collection. Graham and Green’s ever-evolving collections is largely due to Jamie, who studied furniture and product design before taking the reins from his mother Antonia. Jamie designs many of the brand’s furniture collections, adding new additions to existing ranges and working with suppliers to customise pieces. His latest project is a vintage collection of one-off pieces, due to launch soon. Jamie loves all things reclaimed, so these unique treasures will fit in perfectly in their new G&G home. As Jamie and Lou both agree: “We love homes that are full of eclectic pieces that tell a story. Our brand is a carefully curated emporium of treasures which do just that.” And what can we expect to mark Graham and Green’s 50th birthday? Well that is a surprise we eagerly await. 01225 418 200; grahamandgreen.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

DESIGN EYE The inside story of how Poggenpohl created this stunning kitchen

T

aking inspiration from the colours and style of this beautiful North London property found just a short walk from Hampstead Heath, the client’s brief was to design a space that was a balance between a practical living and cooking space whilst creating a visually stunning design. The team in the Hampstead Poggenpohl Studio set about with the aim to create a kitchen that wasn’t something you see every day, but whilst doing so, had to ensure the design didn’t sacrifice functionality. The materials used needed to be sympathetic to the existing house and features, whilst remaining within a specific colour palette – which was fairly unique. The idea of using muted greens and browns came in quite early in the project, as did the use of Poggenpohl’s Champagne Aluminium door front, which can be seen on the tall housings. This finish paired naturally with the Bronze Anthracite textured door which has been used in both a handle-less and handled

capacity on the sink run and the island. The different heights and depths of the cabinets throughout the space help to create interest around the kitchen, and the use of the double stacked furniture that is installed tight to the ceiling with the wall units beneath again bridges the gap between looking good and having a practical use and purpose. The +Modo element of the island was a feature requested by the client from the very beginning and had to be included. Due to the layout of the kitchen, the island had to be in an L-shape to make the most of the space, which meant utilising the internal edge for the client’s breakfast bar. In order to keep the worktop as visually clear as possible, this breakfast bar is set to the bottom edge of the worksurface and inset within the worktops. The material used is Poggenpohl’s Light Smoked Oak, which is mirrored on the pull-out open trays and inside the +Stage pocket doors. In order to achieve a thicker effect on the breakfast bar, rather than just simply installing two panels on top of one another, there is a custom-made bronze panel inset between them, which is also used on the open shelves on the panelled

wall, again helping to tie the space together through the use of mirroring materials and design elements. The client’s brief for the worktops was to ensure that they were heat resistant allowing her to place items from the oven directly onto the worksurfaces, whilst also maintaining the colour palette and having to have a marble-like finish. The composite ‘Dekton’ in Taga was used as it hit every item on the client’s wishlist, it sits within the colour palette, allows for a practical kitchen whilst also looking stunning with all the characteristics of natural stone. Overall, this kitchen is a triumph of practicality and design; both coming together seamlessly to create something new. A space that allows for comfortable family evenings cooking together, whilst also being a visually stunning part of the house – and perfect for entertaining too! For more details on this design, or to find your nearest Poggenpohl Studio, visit poggenpohl.com or call 01727 738 100

QE takes pride in fostering future readiness by developing the wider skills that are essential for future employability and success. Working together, our Stretch and Challenge and Pastoral teams provide weekly sessions on mental health, wellness, physical health, and future-readiness. We also run several lectures on topics such as networking, tackling procrastination, and balancing study with collegiate life and offer campus-wide projects such as our annual Whole School Revision Project which teaches the most efficient revision techniques for retaining knowledge and excelling in examinations. In addition, students can seek professional careers assistance and participate in informative workshops and lectures delivered by academic staff, alumni and external professionals to help them best prepare for UCAS applications, further education and beyond. Our business and enterprise clubs

develop essential ‘future success’ skills in entrepreneurship, collaboration, ICT, communication and critical thinking through projects and competitions focused around using key skills in financial management, strategic planning, and entrepreneurial thinking. These run alongside our extensive STEM co-curricular programme which promotes innovation, curiosity, exploration and problem-solving through extra-curricular practical science sessions, science fun days, and national initiatives such as Mars Balloon. Students can apply for various roles of responsibility where they can practice and improve skills in leadership, collaboration, planning, organisation, presenting, and

negotiating. These key skills are further enhanced through opportunities to lead academic societies, coordinate projects such as the school newsletter and leavers annual, organise a variety of different events, and volunteer in community projects. Students can also undertake external qualifications in areas such as lifeguarding, gym instructing, youth mental health and anti-bullying, which not only assist them in becoming more well-rounded and versatile but provide further opportunities to hone their life skills through experience while contributing positively to collegiate life. To ensure our students leave us with a variety of vital life skills, our award-winning catering team teaches 14 classes a week on topics from cooking at university to growing, harvesting, and preparing food. We make sure that we provide our students with learning opportunities dedicated to essential life skills with chances to challenge themselves and gain invaluable hands-on experience so that they are fully equipped for further education and beyond. Nestled in 220 acres of North Yorkshire countryside, QE is a co-educational day and boarding school for students from 3 months to 19 years, known for its academic success and excellent facilities. Bursary benefits Cameron Pyke of Dulwich College on the life-changing value and whole-community benefits of independent school bursary funds

T

ransformative is a word frequently used to describe the benefit of a bursary, and it is undoubtedly true that in a world where opportunity can hinge on access to quality education, the provision of a full award, including a wider package of support, to attend an independent school can be a life-changing gift. Of 220 means-tested awards held by pupils at Dulwich College (valued at £4.4m), 129 are for full fees. The impact of financial assistance is felt far beyond individual lives. It is often why schools’ bursary funds are supported so enthusiastically by parents and former pupils. They recognise the benefits social diversity in the pupil body brings for the wider community.

D IVE R S IT Y B E N E F ITS A diverse community enriches the educational experience for everyone and fosters empathy, and adaptability. It brings together individuals with different backgrounds and life experiences, preparing them to flourish in a global community. A bursary award can instil a sense of pride and accomplishment that radiates from the scholar to all those who have supported this journey. Parents witness their child’s burgeoning confidence, and the extended family unit can become a dynamic hub of support. We have full fee-paying pupils at the College whose father or grandfather attended the school because of a bursary award. Independent schools can become catalysts for unlocking and nurturing untapped potential for the benefit of others. As Dulwich alumnus CJ Obi, UCL graduate and founder of Urbanist Platform, puts it: “There is a direct, tangible

“We have full feepaying pupils at the College whose father or grandfather attended the school because of a bursary award” impact that receiving financial support in the form of a bursary has had on me. It’s there in all my work as I help to shape places, towns and cities, and inspire people today”. Pupils who benefit from bursaries very often develop a deep appreciation for the power of education. They go on to become advocates for equal access to quality learning, using their experiences to champion educational opportunities for others.

parents at Dulwich are drawn to the school because of our social mission. Pupils and their families who benefit from bursaries often commit to a lifetime of philanthropy and giving back to society. Many donors to our Bursary Appeal Fund are alumni who themselves benefited from financial assistance, also existing bursary holding families. They speak passionately about their time at the school and what they themselves contributed. A school’s bursary provision lies at the heart of fostering inclusivity, social mobility, and a deep sense of community, creating an environment where every pupil can thrive and contribute their unique gifts. For many parents, this ethos is one important part of how they select a school for their child.

POS ITIVE C HAN G E Demonstrating a commitment to accessibility and inclusivity through means-tested bursaries and making a genuine contribution to positive social change can help dispel the notion of exclusivity and elitism that can surround independent schools. Many

Beyond DATA The Head of Kew Green Prep on why schools need to look beyond data-driven approaches in education to fully develop children's talents, skills and self-esteem

O

ur pupils are growing up in a complex and nuanced world, steered by rapid change. For schools, it’s good to be nimble; good to be adaptable. Every school is a microcosm of the society in which it sits, and we therefore need to accept the changing landscape, and move forward – unafraid to take a new and innovative approach. It’s a time to avoid complacency and allow our aims and culture to evolve, taking risks where necessary to remain purposeful, responsive, and proactive. Keeping the interests of the child, and who they are becoming, must be at the heart of all our decisions. While pupil data must still hold an important place in all schools, it’s now fundamental to look beyond the measurable outcomes within academic subjects, recognising the importance of the skills and aptitudes that we know our pupils will need to thrive in the wider world –

“It’s fundamental to look beyond the measurable outcomes, recognising the importance of the skills and aptitudes our pupils will need to thrive” with self-esteem at the core. As the poet Maya Angelou said: "my mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour and some style". Our ethos at Kew Green Preparatory School reflects this view. We aim to provide our pupils with the knowledge, skills and values to shape a brighter future for themselves and society at large. We also aim to equip them with a strong moral compass,

s the world continues to evolve, the way in which we prepare our children must do the same. Southbank International School is an IB World school for children aged 2-18 years old, with campuses located across central London. The IB at Southbank is a comprehensive and international curriculum that takes a holistic approach to education, fostering intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills, from early years to post-16 education. With new technologies revolutionising the way we live – and increased global uncertainty impacting the world’s economy and future outlook – it’s more crucial than ever that we equip young people with the tools to navigate the complexities of our century. The onus is on schools and colleges to support students as they take their first steps in the outside world, ensuring they are ready to thrive in whatever path they choose after school. A focus on cultural diversity, independent thinking and nurturing morals and values is what many believe needs to come to the forefront. I hold the view that the International

How help from the experts at STEMaccess can ensure successful admission to a top university

A

dmissions to top universities can be a complex and highly competitive process, with elite institutions such as Cambridge and Oxford reporting acceptance rates as low as 15.7% and 13.7% respectively. Moreover, this journey requires several challenging hurdles, including personal statements, admissions tests and interviews. From our extensive experience at STEMaccess providing specialist admissions support, we have distilled the key components of strong applicants into three core pillars.

KNOWING WHAT YOU WANT TO STUDY, WHERE YOU WANT TO STUDY AND WHY

with the content varying significantly. Employability is another key consideration, with universities often providing statistics and lists of careers undertaken by alumni of each course. Fortunately, today’s job market is very dynamic, with many employers now focusing mainly on university rather than the subject studied. Of course, studying history is a poor initial choice if you want to work in engineering. However, many top employers will employ graduates from a wide variety of academic backgrounds. For

example, if you studied History at Oxford and wanted to work in aerospace, you could apply to roles within business or finance as an Oxford graduate, then pivot into an aerospace firm in a corporate position. Understanding why you want to study a course will aid the rest of the application process, by improving work ethic and making personal statement writing much easier.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND EXTRACURRICULARS Academic performance and extracurriculars

UNIVERSITY OF CAMBRIDGE GRADUATION

It is easy today to suffer from ‘choice overload’ given the multitude of universities and courses on offer. If unsure of what to study, the best way to avoid this overload is to continue studying subjects you have enjoyed and excelled at so far while keeping in mind any future career goals. It is important to note that courses at different universities are often not comparable,

“AS UNIVERSITY PLACES BECOME MORE COMPETITIVE, ONE-TO-ONE TUITION IS BEING USED MORE AND MORE”

STUDENTS STUDYING SCIENCE

will form the backbone of most applications to any course, as admissions tutors require assurance that a candidate has what it takes to succeed and thrive on their programme. The number of students receiving private tuition is growing each year, with over a third of pupils in the UK now partaking, as per Independent School Parent. This same report stated that nearly 60% of students have utilised private tuition at some point in time. As university places become more competitive, one-to-one tuition is being used more and more throughout GCSE, A-level and IB. At STEMaccess, we believe it is the best way to both benchmark and improve a student’s performance ahead of applications, regardless of age. Having a good rapport with a specialist tutor also allows discussions to be had around admissions, career options and any anxieties regarding university. Extracurriculars are also essential for many courses to show transferable skills, such as teamwork, communication, critical thinking and leadership. These don't have to be captaining a sports team or being Grade 8 in violin: an extracurricular can be anything from a part-time job to volunteering, to an

interesting book or hobby. The most important thing to remember is that it’s how you frame the extracurricular to show skill development that is impressive, not the extracurricular itself.

PERSONAL STATEMENTS AND INTERVIEWS Personal statements are often the first hurdle for all admissions, offering the chance to present oneself as a unique, well-rounded and passionate candidate who would thrive on the course. The conventional written personal statements are changing for 2024/25 applications, but the principles remain the same. Rather than a long piece of prose, students will be required to answer specific questions. At STEMaccess, we have an extensive network of admissions tutors who run workshops and can provide insight into this new model to ensure success. Interview preparation is equally vital, with the key being to practice as much as possible with someone in the field you are applying to, with answers that are somewhat prepared but not too mechanical. This is especially important for students applying to Medicine and Dentistry. The

STUDENTS APPLYING FOR UNIVERSITY

more you practice, the less likely you are to be rattled by a rogue question.

IN SUMMARY Parents and teachers play a crucial role in guiding students through the complex world of university admissions. By understanding the requirements and supporting your children with them, you are giving them the best chance at success. It is a challenging journey to gain a place at a top university, but any goal can become attainable with the right support. stemaccess.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

School for LIFE Katharine Woodcock, Headmistress of Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, on beyondthe-timetable education that builds skills for life

T

he landscape of education is changing – and the speed of this change is accelerating – yet the way in which we assess the extraordinary achievements of our pupils has not. GCSE and A-level results still open important doors, but examination results are not the only important outcome of a 21st-century education that should be considered relevant. Character education, emotional intelligence, soft skills, creativity, a love of learning, digital literacy, to name but a few, are important for a holistic and well-rounded schooling. A curriculum for life is now integral to ensuring that pupils leave school with the requisite toolkit to thrive. This curriculum puts as much emphasis on the importance of what happens within the classroom and academic results as it does on what happens outside the classroom. At Francis Holland School, Regent’s Park, we strive to be strong in every area, be that music, drama, sport or the arts. Our sense of community and inclusivity comes from the belief that every girl should be

“Every girl should be visible, celebrated for her individual strengths and not moulded into something she isn’t”

KATHARINE WOODCOCK WITH FHS REGENT’S PARK PUPILS

visible, celebrated for her individual strengths and not moulded into something she isn’t. Lifelong friendships are forged at FHS, not just within year groups but across the years. All aspects of school life afford pupils with ways in which to develop selfconfidence and self-discipline, empowering them every step of the way. We want them to be curious and foster a lifelong love of learning, but also to be future ready and future proofed. A balanced and enriching co-curricular programme will only serve to enhance an education, tapping into talents and passions, whilst academic enrichment deepens knowledge, broadens horizons and provides invaluable time for critical thinking as well as healthy debate and discussion. The launch last year of our Hale Lecture Series, named after our first speaker and the first female President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, Baroness Lady Hale, enables our students to lead panel discussions on a range of important topics, whilst also bringing students together from a range of different schools. Sixth Form electives, our bespoke global horizons programme, financial and digital literacy sessions and opportunities to invent, innovate and design are all examples of how education today is not only timetabled

subjects, but also schooling for life. The values, culture and ethos of a school are also paramount and our four pillars of knowledge, compassion, perseverance and spirit underpin all that we do, ensuring that we are character building. Creativity and empathy lie at the heart of what it means to be human and we want our pupils to be the difference we need right now in the world: to be kind to themselves and others, to give back. Our Help Fund, which supports our chosen charities, encourages our pupils to do just this, and is complemented by our partnerships and outreach programme. Our goal is that pupils leave FHS with leadership, problem-solving and lateral thinking skills that set them apart, while also knowing the importance of compassion and humility in all that they go on to achieve. The landscape of education may be changing but it is a privilege and an honour to help the minds of tomorrow embrace this change, giving them the best possible springboard to future success and happiness.

ast June, the Conservative government published a sector strategy for the creative industries. In his foreword to the report Rishi Sunak wrote: “These industries generate £108 billion a year, employ over 2.3 million people in every corner of the country. And there is a real sense of energy in the sector, which has grown at more than 1.5 times the rate of the wider economy over the past decade”. An eclectic list followed of Great British Creative Products: Ed Sheeran, Football Manager (the console game, rather than the archetype), the National Theatre and Adele amongst others. This told us something about the PM’s music and gaming habits but was also a welcome indication of the pride the UK should feel in its creative industries. STEM subjects have been the zeitgeist since Michael Gove spoke to the Royal Society in 2011. In that speech he said: “Asia has a massive trade surplus, holds the fate of the dollar in its hands, enjoys surging growth and is developing schools, technical colleges and universities which are dramatically outpacing our own”.
