iven the turbulent times we live in, I think we all could do with some Christmas cheer. Yes, yes, it seems like it starts earlier every year, and also yes, I have had a period in my life where I was more of the bah humbug sort, but I reckon since Covid I have changed. I like things that make me smile and, more importantly, make others smile too. Christmas is incredibly important to Essex businesses too, particularly given a year of ever-increasing interest rates. Parker's Garden Company, for example, start preparing for Christmas back in January, showing just how key this period is for them and local businesses just like them. So, in this issue, we delve into the finer things of festive life to get the ball rolling at Absolutely towers, from gifts for all the family, to the best Christmas markets out there. Ho, ho, ho indeed.

olchester Events is delighted to announce that international comedy superstar, Jack Whitehall, is to bring his brand new live comedy show, Settle Down, to Colchester’s Charter Hall on 7 November. Following three complete sell-out arena tours, Jack is eager to get back on the road doing what he does best – delighting audiences. Jack says: “This is my most personal show yet, with plenty of material about the big changes that have happened in my life. It’s about my struggle to settle down gracefully. I’ve got a longterm partner, a ridiculous dog and am now hurtling towards middle aged without a clue. It’s about a foppish man-child’s cackhanded attempt at adulting!” It took just 40 minutes for tickets to Jack Whitehall's ‘Warming Up’ show at Charter Hall’s 1,200-seat venue to sell out in March 2023. Colchester audiences who enjoyed the rare opportunity to see Jack test drive his new material will now get the chance to come back and see his highly anticipated new live show.

Kind of

MAGIC Chelmsford’s Richard Jones on his rise through the ranks to become a TV magician and why creating spellbinding moments is a dream come true B y N ATA L I E L I

S

omething magical was in the air as 15-year-old Richard Jones watched the winning X Factor performance of A Moment Like This by Leona Lewis in 2006. Flanked by Christmas trees, confetti falling to the roar of the audience’s adulation, Leona ignited something in the aspiring musician who was studying at West Hatch High School in Chigwell. “I always remember it was a really unique TV moment because it was Christmas time, and I was on the couch watching with my parents,” recalls the now 33-year-old who grew up in Woodbridge. “I remember tears welling up and thinking, ‘wow, what a powerful moment’ because I felt a connection with her and was moved by the fact she’d made her dreams come true. “Thousands of people picked up the phone to vote for her because they wanted her to do well,” he adds. “As cheesy as it sounds, I always thought I would love to have my ‘moment like this’ one day.”

Richard’s moment, amid tears of joy, came in 2016 after winning over the public and ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent judges to become the first magician to win the show. It's easy to see why. In person, Richard is every inch the warm, likeable, and down-to-earth person who appeared in the contest. A former Lance Corporal, Richard joined the British Army in 2010 and studied for a year at the Royal Military School of Music. He spent three years with the Parachute Regiment band, before being posted to the band of the Household Cavalry in 2014 as a mounted dutyman. Before heading under the spotlight in front of judges Amanda Holden, Simon Cowell, David Walliams and Alesha Dixon, Richard also appeared on The Chase. “When I was at school, all I wanted to do was join the army and be a bandsman. That was always my dream because my brother is in the army and both of my parents were. After sixth form, I spent a year getting odd jobs so I could get a feel for how the real world worked.” During his overseas posting, Richard

experienced his first foray into magic. “I love learning, so I read a lot of books on psychology, how the mind works and why magic works in general, and hypnosis. Over time, I started learning basic tricks, trying them out on colleagues. I realised how unique and powerful magic can be when we were all having a tough day. I thought I’d try out a magic trick and it really cheered everyone up,” he grins. “Magic can elevate you and transport you away from a difficult time. What we look for as magicians is what we call wonder. We try to create this ‘moment of wonder’, sometimes it’s a second, sometimes it’s longer. But in that moment of wonder, all our boundaries are shattered in a few seconds. Everything else falls away – it can change your day. “With magic I do my best to make it feel like other people are creating the magic and I'm just there facilitating it in some small way. That’s when it becomes more powerful and meaningful,” smiles the entertainer who is a member of the Magic Circle. Richard’s moments of wonder never cease to amaze his audiences as he travels the world A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

WOODBRIDGE

“Visiting hospitals is probably the clearest way of seeing how powerful magic can be” entertaining troops, celebrities, the Royal family, cruise ship passengers, at corporate events, and on his own upcoming tour. Last month he performed in Southend Palace Theatre – a special place for a few reasons. “I remember seeing Derren Brown in Southend years before I started magic. Not only did I get to experience magic in hypnosis, but I witnessed the audience’s reaction. You could hear a pin drop; everyone was so fixated on what he was doing. It was just fascinating. And that’s what made me think ‘wow, this is cool’. I've got a real connection with the venue and Southend – often when the sun’s out, I'll

ride down to the seafront on my motorbike, get coffee and work. It’s a lovely place.” An ambassador for charity Spread a Smile, Richard describes it as an “honour” to bring magic to seriously ill children in hospitals across the UK. “Visiting hospitals is probably the clearest way of seeing how powerful magic can be,” he says. “I’ve met people who are having a really difficult time and seeing how big an impact it makes on individuals is truly magical. The inspiringly brave children I have met during visits always put a big smile onto my face too.” With the whirlwind of fame and fortune

HE'S A FAN OF POMERANIANS

HE MAKES TIME FOR A SUNDAY ROAST

– he secured £250,000 from his Britain’s Got Talent win and bought his Chelmsford home – Richard is deeply content and loves nothing more than “chilling at home” with actress girlfriend Ria, who he met before the pandemic, and their Pomeranian puppy, Lady. “I don’t do lots of exciting stuff in my free time anymore. I’m an old and boring person,” he laughs. Regular walks around Danbury Country Park and Sunday roasts at the Shaw Farm pub in Chelmsford are the best things in life for the performer who spends most of his work life travelling. As our chat draws to a close, Richard reflects on his successes with admirable humility. “I’ve been lucky to meet Hollywood stars like Jackie Chan and Jean-Claude Van Damme and perform for King Charles,” he smiles. “I have lovely memories of Queen Elizabeth II – when I performed at the Buckingham Palace Garden Parties, the Queen would always come out, greet her staff, and check everyone was happy and ready. “I’ve experienced lots of great opportunities since Britain’s Got Talent. There’s been some things that have been slightly tougher, but I wouldn’t ever change anything. I literally couldn’t feel any luckier. It’s the failures and things that didn’t work out so well that have helped me to grow. I am grateful for my mistakes and all my successes.” richardjonesmagic.co.uk

FUN AT HAVEN HOUSE

Q Can you give us an overview of your career in healthcare to date? A I have worked in healthcare for around 20 years, mainly in the NHS. I have worked at national level, giving advice to Ministers, and locally on delivering frontline services. My most recent role was as the Chief Executive at Whipps Cross hospital. Q What attracted you to joining the Haven House team? A The work that Haven House does to support children and families at times of great need is hugely important and it really appealed to my values. Haven House is a lovely place to visit and a perfect setting for these services, and it also has a great, committed team. So, it was a very easy decision to apply for the role and I’m really pleased that I’ve been given the opportunity to work at Haven House.

Q Have you come across Haven House much in your career to date? A Yes, the neonatal unit at Whipps Cross works closely with Haven House, so I was aware of the services and the great reputation of the organisation. I have also attended fundraising events in the past as a local resident and visited Haven House on a few occasions. Q What are you looking forward to most? A I want to be part of a team that makes a

vital difference to local children and their families, particularly when they are facing really difficult situations, and that’s central to the work that Haven House does. Haven House is here to enable those we support to enjoy life as children, rather than as patients, and as families, not just as carers. Together, A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

HAVEN HOUSE RELIES ON COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING

THE MAGICAL SETTING

HAVEN HOUSE OFFERS VITAL SUPPORT TO FAMILIES

CONNAUGHT WATER

“The hospice is a beautiful building surrounded by woodland, so it's a magical setting”

we help families create happy memories and make the most of every moment. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and lending a hand with that important work. Q What challenges do you face? A Funding is a challenge for all charities,

but there are particular challenges for children’s hospice services because of changes to the government funding regime. That will make our local and community fundraising work even more important if we want to maintain and expand the great service that Haven House provides. Q What events can we still expect marking

Haven House’s 20th anniversary? A It’s been a very busy year already, but there is more to come: we are hosting a brilliant Christmas Fair at Haven House on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December, a

22

perfect Christmas outing for families. The hospice transforms at Christmastime. There will be fairy lights, an enchanted woodland trail, mince pies, carol-singing, games, Father Christmas’ grotto and reindeer. The hospice is a beautiful building surrounded by woodland, so it’s a magical setting. And we have a comedy night with hospice ambassador and brilliant comedian Jon Richardson on Thursday 1 February 2024; tickets for this would make a great Christmas gift, which you can purchase now on our website. Q Haven House is based in Woodford Green – do you live close by? A Yes, I live nearby in Woodford Wells and my children attend school locally, so I am very much part of the community. Q What do you make of the setting? A It’s a really beautiful place and a great

setting for the services Haven House provides, offering a chance for calm and contemplation, but also the space to have fun and to make happy memories. The forest is such an important part of our local area and we are very lucky to have it right on our doorstep to complete the setting for the hospice.

Q Where are your favourite spots in Essex? A I enjoy walking and running in Epping

Forest at all times of year, but it’s particularly beautiful in the autumn. I like to find new routes between places. Connaught Water and High Beech are a couple of my favourite spots. Q Finally, for those who are not familiar with Haven House, what would you say to them to encourage them to offer their support? A Haven House supports children with serious and life-limiting conditions and their families. The services are wide-ranging and aim to support children throughout their lives as well as at the end of their lives. We all hope we won’t ever need to use services of this kind, but at the same time we would all want these services to be there if we ever did need them. And you can see from the stories and feedback that Haven House receives from its children and families that the services make a huge difference to people at a time of great need. As a charity, Haven House relies on community fundraising for most of its income, so it really is a great cause that anybody can help to support.

irque du Soleil returns to London to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its internationally acclaimed classic Alegría from 11 January at the iconic Royal Albert Hall. This limited series of performances will mark the European Premiere of the revival production of Alegría, a creative reinterpretation of the 1994 touring show in a whole new light. First premiered in 1994, Alegría has become one of the most beloved Cirque du Soleil shows by mesmerising over 14 million spectators in 255 cities across 40 countries until the end of its 19year world tour in 2013. Its original production performed five successful engagements in London from 1998, including four residencies at the Royal Albert Hall, making London the city Alegría has visited the most in the world. In 2019, Alegría was revived and creatively reinterpreted in a new light, ensuring that all its components – stage direction, music, acrobatics, sets, costumes, lighting and makeup designs – would be as inspiring for today’s audiences as they were at the time of the original creation. Re-energised by an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers, Alegría remains timeless and imbued with a joyous magical feeling. “We are thrilled to be bringing the revival of our classic Alegría to the Royal Albert Hall, the most popular Cirque du Soleil production ever in London with over 625,000 spectators across five visits. We are proud to have concluded an additional five-year agreement with the Royal Albert Hall for the presentation of our touring shows,” says Duncan J. Fisher, President – Touring Shows, Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. Undeniably the most iconic Cirque du Soleil production, Alegría (‘joy’ in Spanish) is an all-time classic reimagined for a new generation to fall in love with. An immersive

“Expect an international cast of 62 acrobats, clowns, musicians and singers”

experience, Alegría whisks audiences away to a mystical world sprinkled with visual poetry and acrobatic extravagance. At the heart of a once-glorious kingdom that has lost its king, Alegría witnesses the power struggle at play between the old order and the youth in their quest for hope and renewal. As the court jester clumsily tries to take the throne, a growing desire for change emerges from the street to shake the status quo and bring joy to the world. With its unforgettable soundtrack, exciting acrobatics, surreal costume designs, vibrant set and playful humour, Alegría touches the soul and lives up to its global reputation of quintessential Cirque du Soleil spectacle. Cirque du Soleil started its muchloved annual residency at the Royal Albert Hall in 1996, becoming a staple of entertainment at the famous London venue as it becomes a permanent big top for over two months each year. cirquedusoleil.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

FIRS

Parker’s Garden Company's Katrina Holford offers up some top Christmas tree tips

Q Is the Christmas period a

particularly busy time for you? A Yes, believe it or not, we begin preparing for the Christmas season as early as January. We invest a significant amount of time buying and planning our displays and themes. Last year we were awarded third place in the UK in the Garden Centre Association’s Christmas competition. Our Christmas displays are open to enjoy now, and our real Christmas trees arrive the week commencing Monday 20 November. We stock cut, low needle drop Nordmann Firs and the traditional Norway Spruce from 1m to 4.5m (3ft to 15ft), together with a range of pot-grown Christmas trees from table top size up to 1.25m (4ft). We also have a wide range of traditional fresh spruce wreaths and a luxurious collection of wreaths and door decorations, as well as a wide range of artificial wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees including pre-lit. Q What top tips would you offer a

customer buying their Christmas tree?

A We display our real trees in full

so our customers can walk through them like a Christmas tree forest! Our pro tips to keep your Christmas tree shining bright to last the season are: Cut approximately half an inch off the tree trunk, as soon as possible, to open up the pores of the tree; Stand the tree in a bucket of water for a day or until required, outside or in a cool place; Put the tree in

a water holding stand and do not allow it to dry out, if it does re-cut the trunk; Position away from heat, such as fires and radiators; Keep the stand topped up with water daily. We also offer a free real tree collection service in January to local areas (CO13, CO14, CO15 and CO16). Q What kind of Christmas

gifts do you also sell? A Our extensive range of products means there’s something for everyone. From cosy homeware and fragrances, gardening tools and gadgets, luscious plants and pet accessories, food and cookware accessories, books and toys, crackers and tableware. We have it all! Our handpicked gift selection will certainly make this year’s Christmas shopping experience a breeze. Q What else can we enjoy at

Parker’s when visiting?

A Our fun, friendly, knowledgeable, and

welcoming team! We love what we do and are passionate about providing our valued customers with a wonderful experience, whether popping in for breakfast, coffee or lunch, to grab a gift, or looking for some planting advice.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

We also have a large car parking area which makes visiting us nice and easy. Q Will you be holding any festive events? A Yes! We are holding Wreath Making

events, which have already sold out, and our popular Restaurant Nights where our Head Chef has created a delicious Five Course Christmas Tasting Menu. Our garden centre will be open for late night shopping on Fridays in December until 7pm, when our restaurant will then open for Christmas Restaurant Nights. TWINNING at LIFE Essex-raised entrepreneur, home chef and mum of twins, Sarah Rossi, is on a mission to get families back around the dinner table By REBECCA PITCAIRN

D

o you ever wish there were more hours in the day? With life’s daily juggle seemingly more difficult than ever before, it’s little wonder that family mealtimes often end up being fractious and fragmented – at least that’s the case in my household. According to research carried out by Hello Fresh and Sainsbury’s, a quarter (24%) of UK families only find time to sit down for a family meal together once a week, with over half (55%) citing conflicting schedules and time deficiency as the reason. Being strapped for time is something food blogger, author and mum-of-twins, Sarah Rossi, knows all too well. “Before the twins were born, I just totally underestimated the mental impact having children has on you,” she admits. “Time, lack of sleep, cost, but also your brain is always slightly elsewhere. Has everyone remembered their games kit, what time are they being collected and, of course, are they happy? It takes its toll.” In a bid to share some of that mental load following the birth of George and Harriet in 2012, Sarah started blogging

about her life with the twins and the everyday challenges she faced. “I started Taming Twins meaning to write about having twins and how to stay sane, but quite quickly I realised that cooking easy dinner recipes was the one thing that was helping hugely with feeling like I was juggling life,” she explains. “And, because I love food, the website then became all about the recipes that were making my life easier.” She soon noticed that her recipes were getting more traction online and before long decided to give up the cookery and cake decorating school she ran and focus full time on Taming Twins. Since then, she has amassed a staggering 500k-plus audience of followers on social media. While Sarah now lives out of the county with her husband, the twins and their dog, Archie, she grew up in the pretty village of Earls Colne, near Colchester, and has fond memories of her own childhood in Essex. “I remember visiting my grandma in Maldon, trips to the Castle Park, fresh fish on Mersea, spending weekends in Brightlingsea and when the flume water slides opened at Leisureworld Colchester – now that was an exciting day for an 11-year-old,” she laughs. Sarah returns to Essex regularly to visit her mum – “When I come to stay, I often

take her to the lovely Wivenhoe House for afternoon tea as it’s such a pretty spot,” she says – and for the occasional trip down memory lane. “Last year, I came back to visit my oldest friend, Naomi. We thought we’d have a night out in Colchester for old-times sake,” she says. “I got chatting to the taxi driver on the way in and said that we might go to The Hippodrome to reminisce (if you know, you know). He kindly pointed out that it had been shut for 20 years and I was showing my age!” Last year, Sarah’s Taming Twins journey stepped up a gear when she was given a publishing deal and her debut cookbook, What’s For Dinner?, hit shelves earlier this year. Featuring fuss-free family meal ideas in 30 minutes or less, the book became a Sunday Times Bestseller. Sarah’s follow-up book, What’s For Dinner In One Pot?, features 10 recipes for creating complete meals in just one single pan, not only helping users save time on prep and cooking time, but on washing up too. “My first book focussed on quick meals (under 30 minutes) and when writing the second book, I realised that one of the stress points of cooking can be too many processes, lots of pans at once. I decided to come up with a whole book of recipes where everything is cooked in just one pan. This also saves A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Turkey Taco Rice Time: 40 minutes. Serves 4 We love a tasty one-pot rice dish and a turkey taco; at some point they were destined to meet and live happily ever after. The level of spicing here should be fairly mild and suitable for children (unless you’ve bought a particularly fiery seasoning mix!), but if you’d like more heat, add another teaspoon or so.

INGREDIENTS

“It’s exciting to see how my recipes have made people’s lives easier” energy costs and washing up,” says Sarah, adding that her favourites from the new book include her One Pot Turkey Taco Rice (see right) and Slow Cooker Lasagne. As well as nutritious and crowd-pleasing recipes that can be cooked and prepared in limited time, the book also includes digestible guides around batch cooking, utensils and nutrition, as well as helpful lists for stocking your store cupboard and how to make your weekly shop more economical with easily executed meal plans. So what is Sarah’s top tip for preparing nutritious yet comforting meals for all the family as the nights begin to draw in? “Whenever you cook something that’s freezable, make double and freeze the leftovers for another day,” she says. “A bonus meal of Bolognese or a stew on a cold winter night is such a treat to find ready from the freezer.” While Sarah’s mission may well be to save other people time in the kitchen, it means she spends hours in her own kitchen testing her recipes to make sure they are as fuss-free, affordable and family-friendly as possible – each recipe is tested between four and 10 times before it makes the cut.

50

But it’s all worth it for the feedback she receives from her army of foodie fans. “Without a doubt the most exciting part of it all is watching how my recipes have made people’s lives easier,” says Sarah. “Hundreds of followers each week send me photos on Instagram of the meals they are cooking saying they can’t believe that for the first time in a long time they’ve not felt stressed about dinner. It’s a joy to be able to help with that.”

What’s For Dinner In One Pot? published by HarperCollins, is out now, RRP £20

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 500g turkey mince • 1 onion, peeled and chopped • 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed • 3 peppers (whatever colour you prefer),

deseeded and cut into 1cm pieces • 4 tsp fajita seasoning • 200g long-grain rice, rinsed • 4 tbsp tomato purée • 1 x 400g tin black beans, drained and rinsed • 800ml hot chicken stock (made with a stock cube is fine) • 100g cherry tomatoes, halved • 75g grated mozzarella cheese • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

METHOD 1 Heat the oil in a large sauté pan over a medium heat, add the turkey mince and cook for 5 minutes until starting to brown, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it cooks. 2 Add the onion, garlic, peppers and fajita seasoning and cook for 5 minutes, until the vegetables start to soften, then add the rinsed rice to the pan with the tomato purée, black beans and stock. Season with salt and pepper and give everything a good stir. 3 Pop the lid on and cook for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice has absorbed all the stock. 4 Preheat the grill to high. 5 Fluff up the rice with a fork, add the cherry tomatoes and stir until combined. Sprinkle the cheese over the top and pop under the grill for 3–5 minutes until the cheese is just melted.

The ethos of the awardwinning Farm Shop, Butchery and Deli is to support local producers and farmers with over 90% of the produce being sourced from within a 30-mile radius. The friendly, knowledgeable butchers are always on hand to help with cuts of meat and are always happy to help source the more unusual meats. Beside the butcher's counter, you will find the delicious deli counter, which is brimming with cheeses, traditional hams, cooked meats, and Dingley Dell’s Artisan selection of air-dried meats. This treatment offers non-surgical skin tightening and lifting to treat all anti-ageing concerns – from textured, dull skin, to deep wrinkles and loss of laxity. The treatment programme can combine a number of super technologies dependant upon your specific concerns such as Ultherapy, Exilis Elite radio frequency, Morpheus skin needling as well as tweaking with injectable enhancements where necessary, To give immediate & long-term results with minimal downtime. The skin will begin to

feel smoother and tighter after the first treatment and results will continue to improve for up to six months. The skin ageing process happens to everyone, and is a completely natural process. However, it can be very difficult for some people, and make them lose confidence in their appearance. As we get older, the production of collagen and elastin in our bodies slows, causing the common signs of skin ageing, such as fine lines, wrinkles

and a loss of volume in the skin. Collagen and elastin are the proteins that exist within many of the body’s tissues, including the skin, and gives structural support, strength, elasticity and durability to the skin.

“Roughly 70% of your active immune cells are found in your gut”

T

he common cold is quite possibly the UK’s most common illness; statistics show that most adults experience on average two to four colds a year, and children up to nine. And with more than 100 viruses known to cause a cold, it’s hardly surprising. Cold viruses are highly infectious, spreading quickly from person to person through nasal droplets secreted during coughing and sneezing. They attack the lining of the nose, throat and sinuses, which swell and produce increased amounts of mucus and fluids. Symptoms can include blocked sinuses, a runny nose, sore throat, coughing and sneezing as well as a general feeling of being unwell. Fortunately there are several remedies that can help to keep colds and flu firmly at bay. One of the most effective and wellresearched is Echinacea purpurea. It

featured on the BBC’s The Truth About Boosting Your Immune System, where they concluded there was reasonable evidence to support its use to prevent and treat symptoms of the common cold. We also know there is growing evidence that it can play a useful role in preventing the incidence of colds and flu, as well as reducing their severity and duration of symptoms. Echinaforce® Hot Drink with extracts of Black Elderberry can be especially warming at this time of the year. For nasal congestion and catarrh, you could try Po-Ho Oil. A combination of natural essential oils, including Po-Ho (Mandarin for Peppermint) Eucalyptus, Juniper, Caraway and Fennel, Po-Ho Oil can be inhaled as a vapour when diluted in a bowl of hot water. Use very sparingly, one drop is plenty, or put one or two drops onto a hankie and place under your pillow at night. Wash hands thoroughly after use. In addition to herbal remedies, you’ll want to make sure your diet is as healthy as possible. Good immunestrengthening foods include garlic, onions, olives, beetroot, peppers, apples, nuts, seeds, tofu, miso, lemon, lime, honey, blueberries... the list goes on. Friendly bacteria and good intestinal health are also important. When you are first exposed to a virus, your immune system uses antibodies to bind to the virus in the respiratory and digestive tracts. These antibodies work to prevent the virus from entering the body further, and also identify it to be destroyed. Roughly 70% of your active immune cells are found in your gut, and they don’t work very well without the ‘good bacteria’ that live there. Think of them as your very own internal defence force. Live,

natural yoghurt is a good food source, and if you’re supplementing with a probiotic aim for 5-25 billion friendly bacteria daily. Specific vitamins and minerals can also lend support. Vitamin C is of course widely documented for its immune system potential; viruses find it hard to survive in a vitamin C-rich environment. Food sources include peppers, watercress, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, lemons, kiwi fruit, melon and tomatoes. Vitamin C supplements can also be effective, although the body cannot actually absorb much more than around 60mg at one time so lower doses several times a day are often more effective. A Vitamin C supplement with bioflavonoids to aid absorption, or one sourced from fruit, like Nature-C, is a great place to start. Richard Sambridge has over 20 years’ experience in the health industry and is qualified to Diploma level by The Institute of Health Food Retailers. Absolutely stretches and sculpts with Chrissy Sundt's online platform Silver Linings

A

s a time-poor toddler mum, getting out of the house to do exercise can be tricky. Anything beyond the gym days I’ve preagreed with my husband is a challenge at the moment, so I always appreciate being able to exercise at home (squeezing in a quick training session during nap time is a dream!). Doing the same videos day-in-day-out can get dull very quickly though. So I was excited to discover the Silver Linings platform, which has new content added to it regularly. Silver Linings was founded by Chrissy Sundt, a classical Pilates, Yoga and barre instructor who also has a passion for holistic wellness. Chrissy has been teaching for over 20 years and combines

education with her ongoing work as a choreographer. After eight years of training at the Royal Ballet School and a dance career that saw her dance with both the Royal Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet, an ankle injury led her to discover the rehabilitative benefits of Pilates. After teaching in multiple boutique studios across London, a series of trips to Kamalame Cay (the postcard-perfect private island in the Bahamas) inspired her to launch her first Silver Linings Wellbeing retreat. Two channels on YouTube: ‘SL By Chrissy’ and ‘Silver Linings @Home’ aim to bring the benefits of her retreats to a wider audience. The athome classes deliberately avoid expensive equipment, and users only need a mat to participate. Classes are delivered by a roster

of brilliant practitioners – with specialisms from Yoga to mediation, HITT, barre, core, and more. What I’ve really loved is the varying length of the classes – with quick 12 minute workouts and more in-depth 45 minute-long classes (perfect for those with demanding schedules). The way the classes combine different disciplines is also refreshing, and all the movements can be modified, depending on the level you’re at. As an ex-ballet dancer myself, I've really enjoyed Chrissy's choreography and pacing as well. All-in-all it’s safe to say I’m hooked already, and the best bit? There's no negotiations about leaving the house. silverliningswellbeing.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

EDITOR’S PICK

The “London Lash Queen”

t’s Friday morning and I’m at Daxita Vaghela’s Beauty Clinic at AthertonCox near Marylebone High Street. Renowned as one of the leading brow and lash experts, Daxita’s client list is like a who’s who of A list celebrities. I’m here for lash extensions, and I confess to Daxita that it’s my first time. She immediately makes me feel at ease, asking me lots of questions – from how much make-up I usually wear, to if I have any special events coming up. I’m off on holiday the next day and want to look doe-eyed (but not so much so, that my lashes look unnatural). We discuss the options, and I decide on curled ‘Classic Lashes.’ I lie down on the bed and close my eyes. While she works, Daxita tells me about how she was the first to bring lash extensions to the UK. Her 20+ year career has been an impressive one, and she is known for being one of the fastest in the business. Synthetic lashes are individually applied to my natural lashes, which, she explains, have a life cycle of about five weeks, so the extensions will just shed as they fall out. The application is totally painless and Daxita is so gentle, I barely feel anything. My natural lashes are quite short and stubby and when I was younger I wouldn’t leave the house without several coats of mascara. I definitely don’t need any eye make-up after Daxita has worked her magic. My lashes have been transformed – almost as if a real-life filter has been applied to my eyes. They are long and soft, gently curled at the edges – opening up my face. On holiday, I swim in the sea, lounge in saunas and steam rooms, and co-sleep with my toddler. My lashes withstand it all and are still going strong when I return. I can see this becoming very addictive. DAXITA VAGHELA New Cavendish Street, Full set classic lashes, £170

hen it comes to floral arrangements, silk flowers have become an increasingly popular choice among brides and event planners. These realistic and versatile alternatives to fresh flowers offer numerous advantages. As someone with extensive knowledge and experience in the world of silk flowers, here are my five top tips to discuss the benefits and reasons to consider incorporating them into weddings and other special occasions. CHOOSE AN EXPERT IN HIRING HELP WITH YOUR SILK FLOWER SELECTION

Someone knowledgeable in silk flowers can guide you in choosing the best quality silk flowers for your wedding. From selecting the right colours, textures and styles to matching them with your overall theme

and décor, they can assist you in making informed decisions that you won’t regret. An expert will guide you in the important steps in maximising the impact of flowers at your wedding by helping you to select the right blooms. Consider the overall theme, colour scheme, and season of your wedding when choosing flowers. Opt for silk flowers that not only resonate with your personal style, but also complement the surrounding decor. Not forgetting to select the perfect combination of flowers that align with your vision. COST-EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVE

One of the biggest advantages of silk flowers is their cost-effectiveness. Unlike fresh flowers, silk flowers are not subject to seasonal price variations. They can be purchased in advance, allowing for better budget planning. Consequently, your florist will provide insights on how choosing silk flowers can help you save money without compromising the overall aesthetic of your wedding. You can create the “wow” factor at a fraction of the cost. To create a visually harmonious wedding design, ensure that your floral arrangements coordinate seamlessly with other elements of the event. Consider incorporating the same flowers used in the bouquets into the centrepieces, aisle decors, and other flower displays throughout the venue. This cohesive look will tie everything together and create a unified and polished feel. ENDLESS COLOUR AND STYLE OPTIONS

Silk flowers come in an endless variety of colours and styles, providing maximum flexibility in wedding design. A knowledgeable florist who works daily with silk flowers can help you explore different possibilities, enabling you to create unique and personalised floral arrangements that perfectly capture the vision you have for your big day. DURABILITY AND LONGEVITY

Unlike fresh flowers that wither within a few days, silk flowers offer long-lasting beauty. They can withstand the test of time, allowing you to preserve your wedding memories for A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

years to come. Having an experienced wellversed florist in the durability of silk flowers, they can advise you on how to care for and store them after your special day (bouquets) ensuring they remain in perfect condition. There are also several benefits of using silk flower arrangements for a summer ceremony. Firstly, silk flowers are highly durable and can withstand heat and sun exposure without wilting or fading. This ensures that your arrangements will maintain their beauty throughout the event so in all your photos your flowers will be in top condition. Additionally, silk flowers are lightweight and easy to transport, making them ideal for outdoor settings. They are also versatile and can be shaped and arranged in various ways.

Professionals will stay up-to-date with the latest trends in floral design, and be able to offer fresh and innovative options. Additionally, an experienced florist will be well versed in cost-effective solutions, helping clients achieve their desired look while staying within budget. Choosing sustainably produced silk flowers ensures that they are made from eco-friendly materials, such as recycled textiles or organic fibres, minimising their environmental impact. Additionally, silk flowers can be reused for future events, reducing waste. By prioritising sustainability, we can create beautiful and memorable floral arrangements while minimising our carbon footprint and contributing to a greener, more sustainable future. Our goal

is to create stunning arrangements that leave a lasting impression on guests whilst minimising the impact on the environment. In conclusion, from their cost-effectiveness and versatility to their durability and environmental benefits, silk flowers are a favourable option that should not be overlooked. You will be able to create stunning and memorable floral displays that will leave a lasting impression on your special day and when using a reputable company who use the finest silks available worldwide you won’t know the difference. ALLERGY-FRIENDLY AND ECO-CONSCIOUS CHOICE

Silk flowers are hypoallergenic, making them a great choice for individuals with allergies or sensitivities to pollen; silk flowers provide a safe and allergy-free alternative. Additionally, by opting for silk flowers, you contribute to a more sustainable wedding, as they are reusable, reducing waste. The ecological benefits of silk flowers are endless and you can have a beautiful wedding while also being eco-conscious. When it comes to selecting silk flowers for weddings or events, our expertise lies in ensuring the highest quality and realistic appearance. Choose someone who has an eye for detail, carefully assessing the colour, texture, and overall aesthetic of each flower. Someone that understands the importance of selecting flowers that complement the theme and overall ambiance of the occasion. A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

Launching exclusively at Aldi, the budget home fragrance collection is all in Style Sisters signature monochrome look. Charlotte and Gemma make up organising

and styling experts, Style Sisters. Charlotte is an interior designer and Gemma a fashion stylist who collaboratively came together to bring you a detoxing and decluttering service for the home. The go-to home detox experts have previous celebrity clients including Rita Ora, Michelle Visage, Amanda Holden, Georgia Toffolo, Rochelle Humes, Lisa Snowdon, Frankie Bridge, Vicky Pattison and Vogue Williams to name a few. In 2021 the girls released their debut book where the girls show us how to stylishly rearrange and declutter our homes to reap the incredible visual and emotional benefits. You want to create an experience around your home and having beautiful scents placed all around the house will give you and your guests a lovely feeling when they visit your home.” Aldi will launch the first budgetfriendly range exclusively, with two styles available in the collection: Essentials range, featuring ‘Post Detox Zen’ and ‘Energise Your Space’ 200g glass candles, and ‘Post Detox Zen’ and ‘Energise Your Space’ 90ml diffusers with black reeds; and Fragrance Notes, which includes ‘Post Detox Zen’ – Leather, Patchouli, Violet, Amber, and ‘Energise Your Space’ – Freesia, Jasmine, Grapefruit, Musk. Absolutely caught up with Charlotte to find out a little more about the new launch…

Q How long have you been

thinking about launching a fragrance collection and why? A We’ve always loved the idea of creating a bespoke home fragrance collection, as scent is such a powerful part of creating a calm home haven. We always had a vision when we started Style Sisters to curate a practical and stylish range for the whole home and your lifestyle and we are so happy with what we have achieved so far – and there is so much more to come. Q How have you come up with

the scent combinations?

A We both absolutely love fresh,

uplifting, and moody deep scents, so we came up with the concept of day and night, a complete ying and yang vibe for our home fragrance range.

The fresh fragrance is our daytime scent to help promote energy and high vibes throughout the day, and the deeper heavier scents are for nighttime when you need to relax and unwind from your day. The style came from our love of monochrome. For us it’s a timeless, classic look, that can easily be incorporated into any room. Q Do you have a favourite fragrance and if so why? A It’s so hard to choose between the two fragrances, as they can each be used to create different moods! Q What future launches do

you have in mind?

A We have lots of amazing projects

and launches coming soon. Our next launch is a bedding collection, which we can’t wait to share more details for. Alongside expanding our home range, there’s lots of projects designing rooms and wardrobes for our clients. This is one of our favourite things to do, plus we have some great up and coming brand collaborations.

HOME of HISTORY Exploring a fine Grade II listed Georgian country house set in rolling countryside

T

he Ryes is a Grade II listed country house in the hamlet of Little Henny on the Essex/ Suffolk border. The house was designed by Robert Lugar in 1809 for Nathaniel Barnardiston and features in Nikolaus Pevsner's architectural guide, The Buildings of England. The Ryes (originally called The Ryes Lodge) is an elegant Italianate villa constructed to designs by the architect Robert Lugar (c.1773-1855). Lugar was a contemporary of John Nash and practiced in London. He regularly exhibited his work at The Royal Academy. Howard Colvin, a prominent architectural historian, noted that Lugar was a practitioner who exploited the fashion of the picturesque, much in the same manner as Nash. Lugar exhibited a drawing for The Ryes ("Mr. Barnardiston's House") at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in 1809.

Later additions to the house, as mentioned in Pevsner's description, were made to the property in 1884 with designs by E.F.Bishopp, an Ipswich architect commissioned by Colonel Nathaniel Barnardiston (1843-1919). The Barnardistons were a well-founded aristocratic family with a long lineage of baronets. There are references held within online genealogy databases suggesting that the family did not relinquish ownership of The Ryes until the late 20th century, possibly when it was sold for conversion to a school.

MAIN HOUSE Entered via a long gravel driveway, The Ryes is set in an elevated position overlooking rolling countryside. The Ryes is entered via a Doric portico with fluted columns and entablature into a grand hallway with beautiful parquet flooring and original cornicing. The Ryes has a perfect Georgian layout and most of the formal reception rooms surround this hallway. Throughout the house there are high ceilings and bright rooms with thin glazed Georgian sash windows. To the right of the entrance hall is the formal dining room, with marble fireplace, double aspect windows with original shutters and glazed doors which open onto the gardens. The kitchen breakfast room has a stunning bay window with three sash windows, hand built kitchen with intricate marble fireplace, Aga, Belfast sink, detailed plasterwork cornicing and space for informal dining. Just behind the kitchen down a few steps is a very useable playroom which is perfectly situated close to the kitchen and A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

is currently used as a TV and playroom. Off the back of the kitchen there is a laundry, walk in pantry and gym. Each of the reception rooms is elegant and beautifully finished, there is a study, drawing room with detailed plasterwork ceiling detail. A separate office sits at the end of the hallway, which is perfect for many of the family to have space to work from home. There is a generous boot room, with sink and WC plus a cloakroom also with downstairs loo. To the first floor there are seven bedrooms, all of which are en-suite. The principal bedroom has a seating area, large bathroom with his and hers basins, shower and rolltop bath, plus his and hers dressing rooms.

BELL TOWER COTTAGE Bell Tower Cottage is a one bedroom cottage with kitchen breakfast room downstairs along with family bathroom and a study area and one bedroom upstairs. Enjoying its own approach and front door, including lawned private gardens to the front of the property.

of countryside. It is no wonder that when it was initially designed The Ryes was proudly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts showcasing the very best home-design of the day. And now, thanks to a comprehensive renovation, all of the architectural elements that make Georgian homes so popular with our buyers are showcased, from the home’s beautiful sash windows and marble fireplaces to the symmetry and scale of the rooms.” The Ryes in Little Henney has a guide price of £4,500,000. Property agent Tom Orford, director in the residential sales team at Savills in Suffolk, says: “Today The Ryes is a beautifully restored country house that enjoys a perfect Georgian layout, with most of the formal reception rooms surrounding a grand hallway. Throughout the house there are the period details, high ceilings and bright rooms that one would expect from a classic Georgian country house. In addition to the main house there are two cottages; Bell Tower Cottage and Garden Cottage situated in 16.5 acres of grounds. It is a picture-perfect period gem set in a secluded and private position in an undulating area

LIFE

changer How Origin can set you and your family up for a positive future with an indoor swimming pool

I

n today's fast-paced world, swimming stands out as a golden opportunity to promote physical fitness and valuable life skills in children. Recent research from Griffith University reaffirms that swimming is not just a sport, it’s a life-enhancing experience. The research shows children who engage in swimming from an early age reap a multitude of benefits. This, combined with Origin’s commitment to family values, highlights the significance of introducing children to the world of swimming early on. An indoor swimming pool from Origin will not only enhance the value of your home,

but your home and family life as well. Spending time as a family is one of the most valuable experiences of a child’s life. Swimming brings people together, an activity those of all ages can enjoy and research from Griffith University shows children who learn how to swim at a young age reach many developmental milestones earlier than those who don’t. As well as achieving physical milestones faster, children also scored significantly better in visual-motor skills and many mathematically-related tasks. Their oral expression was also better as well as in the general areas of literacy and numeracy. The research also suggests children who develop a passion for swimming are

more likely to maintain an active lifestyle as they grow older. This lifelong love for swimming can lead to improved overall health and well-being. Origin recognises the value of a healthy lifestyle and encourages families to embrace swimming as a way to stay active together. It creates bonds, memories, and a sense of togetherness. Children who learn to swim early on are not only safer around water, but also feel more empowered to enjoy swimming. It instils confidence and a sense of accomplishment, leading to improved social skills and boosted self-esteem. These emotional benefits extend far beyond the pool and the vital skills learnt will last a lifetime. As we navigate an ever-evolving world, let’s remember that some traditions, like teaching our children to swim and spending time together as a family, remain invaluable. By embracing swimming and family values, we empower our children to lead healthier, safer, and more fulfilling lives. Let Origin help enhance your family life with an indoor swimming pool. originpools.co.uk info@originpools.co.uk 01895 453996 A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

WINNING AT THE KBSA AWARDS

COOKING UP

SOMETHING NEW Essex's newest kitchen showroom is open for business

R

egal Kitchens in Chelmsford have set a high bar when it comes to kitchen design and customer service during its 15 year history at their flagship store at Navigation Road. This month the local, award winning family business relocated to their brand new showroom in Beehive Lane, after

three months working to renovate a new warehouse into a stunning showroom. Boasting 10 beautiful displays showing off the latest innovations and colour palettes, Regal opened the doors to their new premises to the public early in October and has been well received by the local community. At the end of September, the kitchen experts attended the KBSA (Kitchen and Bathroom Specialist association) conference and awards held at the Belfry Hotel and received another accolade to add to their ever growing trophy cabinet. The coveted Customer Service Award is only bestowed on the company with the highest standards of client care. Director, John Martin, says: “We are over the moon to have received this amazing award, it is testament to our team and helps give customers reassurance that their kitchen transformation is in the best hands, living up to our motto: Where Client is King.”

THE NEW SHOWROOM WILL HOST DEMONSTRATION DAYS

To celebrate the opening of their brand new showroom, Regal have organised a Neff demonstration day for Saturday 25 November, featuring a finalist from this year's Masterchef competition. Anurag Aggarwal, who lives in Basildon, wowed the Masterchef judges earlier this year with his culinary creativity and authentic flavours whilst still staying true to his Indian roots. He will be joined by Yui Miles, who has worked with Regal on several events in the past. Yui was a quarter finalist on Masterchef in 2019 and her first cookbook, Thai Made Easy, was released in September this year. The chefs will prepare fusion dishes together during the event for all attendees to sample whilst they meet the Regal staff and enjoy complimentary drinks. regalkitchens.co.uk A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

ROMANCE IN SAINT LUCIA Impossibly picturesque, Saint Lucia is rightly feted as the Caribbean’s most romantic island. The incredible Piton Mountains rear dramatically out of the water and are surrounded by rainforest where you can ride horses, zip-line through the canopy or take a mud bath in sulphur springs. Saint Lucia is also one of the great snorkelling and diving destinations, thanks to its vibrant coral reefs home to parrotfish, manta rays, turtles and more. A romantic idyll, a place of sunset cruises and hidden waterfalls, moonlit walks and candlelit beachside dinners. The island’s incredible diversity extends to its accommodation, ranging from gorgeous barefoot resorts to charming boutique hotels. These include East Winds, a beautiful boutique retreat that attracts couples for its intimate charm and feel.

EAST WINDS SAINT LUCIA Tucked away in twelve acres of tropical gardens, there’s a very private and intimate ambience at this elegant resort. And if you like things to be informal yet efficient, East Winds is a great place to stay, especially for the outstanding cuisine. You’ll stay in attractive cottage-style accommodation and enjoy warm Caribbean hospitality as well as a real sense of peace and tranquillity. If you’re looking to get away from it all and simply relax, this is the perfect destination.

fter sightseeing and culture in charming historical Lisbon, we drive one hour and 20 minutes to hotel Alma Lusa Comporta. Our suite is beautifully designed and decorated in Comporta Style with terrace doors that open up to an outdoor pool. We are just in time for ‘Sunset Sessions’ with a DJ on the gorgeous rooftop bar with dappled light. Straw lamps and bunting sway in the breeze. A giant bird silhouetted on the orange horizon is a stork. Golden sun dissolves into a red hued sky. Hot footing it to the beach, as flip-flops

plunge into deep soft sand, to the boardwalk flanked by pinheiro bravo pine trees. Pure white sea shells are scattered on the shore. Waves reflect sunlight back as bright white glitter. Sand dimples in mounds of shade and light. Raffia parasols, then a sea of rainbow brollies, opens up to an almost deserted beach. At Ilha do Arroz for lunch of the tastiest tomato salad, delicious grilled prawns, and Padron peppers, sat at a superb corner table, with a view of the wide sandy beach and cobalt sea. The sea is chilly… well, it is the Atlantic, numbing and cooling hot skin, a contrast to the 35°C heat. The cool breeze acts like AC. Paddle boarders brave the ocean. We walk back past vibrant green rice

fields. The large quantities of water needed to grow the rice lead to mosquitoes that attract frogs, which attract the storks that migrate from Africa to make nests built on chimneys or bell towers. It's hot to shop, but the stylish outdoor market is open on weekends. The bar is buzzy, and we browse lovely merchandise – hippychic beachwear, kaftans, rattan hats, jewellery and artwork. Storks perch in giant nests above the tented roof. At GOMES we dine alfresco on the lawn, the white dining room has a cork tree suspended from the ceiling, roots and all. Wind gently caresses a cool Atlantic breeze over sun soaked skin at Carvahal beach. The hotel spa for massages is

a fantastic way to reset. Relaxed and rejuvenated, walking back out, the air smells fresh and of citronella. A tiny gecko darts across the path in the sunshine. A fragrant waft of cocoa emits from the plants. This evening we stroll past long low white buildings with blue trim. It’s like the Cotswolds of Portugal, but instead of green, windows are painted with the region's signature cobalt blue – the colour of the bracing Atlantic Ocean. Back to Ilha do Arroz for an excellent sunset dinner of grilled dourada fish. I leave splashy footprints on warm decking as I exit the pool. Long purple fountain grass sways in the breeze. “Comporta is unspoiled nature, white sandy beaches, sun and peace”

Comporta chic. We love ‘The Life Juice – Shop, eat and drink’ (that’s my motto too!). Dogs bark, cocks crow, and white peacocks strut in a little farm near interior shop Rice. A half an hour drive to the beach at Praia de Melides. Vida Dura, a delightful store in the cute seaside town, offers bright crockery and eclectic dinner place settings. Noemina is full of gorgeous gifts. Cats snooze in the quiet cobbled streets in the sunshine and we meander past a lovely pile of carved stone books. A large white building appears with dark red window frames and sky-blue trim of the Hotel Vermelho. Stepping through wooden doors to gorgeous surroundings, we sit at Louboutin's signature red table for a glass of local wine with snacks. There are cream rope-fringed parasols, a lush planted colourful garden and manicured lawns. Expensively dressed, well-heeled hotel guests make us rather regret having stumbled off the beach in

Havaianas and I wish I’d put on my red shoes! A balcony has a view of the stunning grounds and a wall with quirky ceramic bird heads. At the marina in Troia for a dolphin trip, called off due to an unusual fog resting on the horizon. You can catch a catamaran or ferry to Setubal from here. Unfazed, we head through the warm haze to the Troia sand dunes. There are Troia Roman ruins, however we’re happy to chill on the misty beach. Dinner is at popular Comporta Café. Music plays and crochet parasols filter the setting sun over dimpled sand and a fire pit. The sun drops into the sea creating pastel stripes in the sky. From the sublime to the beach club – we head to our booked day beds and a cocktail at Sublime Comporta beach club. We lunch on Poke bowls on our sun loungers. A huge dragonfly zooms past, threatening to take out my sublime Whispering Angel. Disco house tunes play as we drink cocktails

and watch a game of beach volleyball at the Sublime bar. At ambient restaurant Almo, we indulge in a dinner of cuttlefish and black rice with local wine. Activities include surf and stand-up paddle lessons, cycling, horse riding, boat rental, wine tasting, dolphin watching, Roman Ruins of Troia, Badoca Safari Park and Black Pig Gin theme park – or just enjoy contemplation in Comporta. We drive back to Lisbon airport, past blackened tree trunks. The cork bark is stripped and numbered 1-9, harvested every nine years to make wine corks. Storks nest on electricity pylons. Fields of corn glint golden. Comporta is unspoiled nature, white sandy beaches, pine trees, sun and peace. LISA MCDONALD

F i r s t

IMPRESSIONS Lisa McDonald started her role as Head of Woodford Green Prep in September - here she tells Absolutely how things are going

Q How long have you been Head

of Woodford Green Prep? A I have been Head at WGPS since September 2023. The pupils are undoubtedly the school’s greatest asset and when I first visited I was so impressed by their character and individual personalities. As someone who is values driven, for me, it's so important that the pupils (and staff) actively and authentically demonstrate our core values on a day to day basis.

They are intellectually curious, quietly confident and, above all, kind. It’s a real pleasure to lead a school with a hugely talented and committed staff and a really positive culture. Q Describe your setting... A The school is set in an urban location,

but on the doorstep of Epping Forest, enabling us to capitalise on all that this natural space has to offer. Being on the periphery of central London, and just a

short tube ride away, also opens the door to the vast cultural heritage of the capital. Q How important are the Prep years to

shaping a pupil’s educational journey?

A Absolutely critical. Providing

children with a secure and nurturing learning environment in which they can build character and confidence is crucial. Children are challenged to become intellectually driven, brave, independent thinkers within a community that is kind and which places happiness and wellbeing at its core.

Q How do you look to instil

a love of learning?

A It’s important for children to have the

time and space to be curious; to develop a sense of wonder and perspective about the world beyond that is immediately around them. Making space for children to become open minded risk takers, to ask lots of questions, to fail as well as succeed and to have an intrinsic desire to lead lives of consequence is a crucial part of what we do. A broad, innovative approach to the curriculum with a real focus on developing important skills and attributes, as well as knowledge, is key.

• TALKING • XXXXX EDUCATION XXXXXXXX HEAD

“Our children are intellectually curious, quietly confident and, above all, kind. It's a real pleasure to lead the school” Q What would we find in

a typical classroom? A You would see children who are lively and engaged and with a real sense of purpose about their learning. There is a palpable sense of the supportive and caring relationships that exist in the school and it's obvious that the children really enjoy learning. There is also an abundance of creativity and a real excitement for learning. Q What curriculum do you follow? A We follow a bespoke and advanced

English National Curriculum, with opportunities for the oldest children to explore philosophy, metacognition and leadership. Breadth of opportunity is also important and our pupils excel in sport and the creative and performing arts. Last academic year, a record number of scholarships were awarded for senior school entry.

Q Does your school do

anything different compared to other Prep schools? A We are ambitious for every child and I am unwavering in my belief that every pupil is capable of great things. There is academic rigour, but we are a compassionate and inclusive community that is wholeheartedly committed to nurturing respect and kindness, and which is unafraid to place personal development at the heart of school life. Q How has the new school year begun? A The new school year has begun

with a renewed sense of energy and excitement. Thanks to the generosity of my predecessor, I was lucky enough to be able to spend a large part of the summer term in school getting to know everyone in our community. For me, positive and strong relationships are the bedrock of a successful school.

Q What are you looking

forward to this year?

A There are no doubt challenges ahead

for our sector, but I am looking forward to the opportunity that those challenges bring. I am supported by a highly skilled senior leadership team and I am excited to work with them to lead WGPs boldly through its next phase of development.

EDUCATION • PARTNERSHIP THE MAYOR OF REDBRIDGE RECENTLY VISITED TREEHOUSE

“A tour showcased their innovative methods to instil environmental awareness in children”

Long term

PLANS More on Treehouse Nursery Schools earning eco-school status and embracing sustainability

T

reehouse have achieved a remarkable milestone by gaining eco-school status at all three of their nursery settings and they are proud to be the only nurseries to fly the green flag at their entrances in Redbridge. They have received the recognition for their exceptional environmental efforts and the high-quality education they provide to their children. To celebrate this achievement, they welcomed the Mayor of Redbridge and the Mayor’s Consort to visit their facilities and witness their eco-friendly practices first hand. During the visit, they gave the dignitaries a tour showcasing their innovative methods for instilling environmental awareness in their children.

One impressive practice on display was their rainwater harvesting system, which recycles rainwater to feed their plants and vegetables. These homegrown harvests are then used in the children’s meals, highlighting the importance of sustainability. The nursery children also gifted the Mayor of Redbridge a child-made sign reminding everyone to ‘turn the tap off’ when using the facilities. These posters were handed out to all local businesses. The tour highlighted recycled artwork and collaborative murals created by the children, focusing on preserving forests and oceans. Treehouse Nursery Schools are committed to sustainability, using wooden toys instead of plastic and actively teaching children about recycling and reducing waste through interactive play and inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. In addition, they engage in various environmental projects, including a recent litter picking initiative in the community with Chestnut Manor, a nearby care home for the elderly, promoting inter-generational bonds and caring for communal green spaces. As well as their eco-achievements, Treehouse Nursery Schools are proud to share that their Grove Montessori branch recently received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted. The Mayor of Redbridge and the Mayor’s Consort expressed their admiration for Treehouse Nursery Schools’ efforts and welcomed collaboration for a more sustainable future. Treehouse Nursery Schools not only offer outstanding childcare, shaping children’s futures, but also provide hope for a greener tomorrow by equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to continue and pass on from generation to generation. treehousenurseries.com A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

“The Sixth Form will provide a transformative experience”

Perfect platform

Bancroft’s Head of Sixth Form explains why they offer everything to prepare students for what lies ahead By PHIL HARRISON

T

he aim of the Sixth Form is to enable the young people of Bancroft’s School to achieve not only their academic potential, but to also develop in them the skills and attributes which are essential to success in later life. Life in the Sixth Form at Bancroft’s provides students with an exciting and hugely rewarding experience that will not only prepare them for the rigours of A-levels, but also provide a transformative experience that will equip them with the life skills that will enable them to flourish whatever their chosen career path may be. The Sixth Form is a time to develop

personal talents and interests, the scholarly approach to study, and skills of leadership and teamwork, so that students are ready to take on the challenges of life beyond school. The two years in the Sixth Form act as a bridge between the relatively ordered style of GCSE courses and the more independent and dynamic world of university, work, and life beyond the school gates. Participation in the wide range of societies, sports and activities beyond the classroom, both within the house structure and outside it, is an essential part of being a Bancroftian. These areas will enrich the Sixth Form experience immensely; they will help students to enjoy life and support academic studies; and they will also help develop vital skills, in leadership and team-

work, in organisation and responsibility, and in resilience and adaptability, all of which are highly valued in later life. We hope that anyone joining the Sixth Form at Bancroft’s School will look for the opportunity to learn new skills and contribute to the school community, ensuring their time in Bancroft’s Sixth Form is well spent and of value to the rest of their lives. The aim is for each Bancroftian to leave us fully prepared, not only for the continuation of their personal journey, but also as a mature, confident, responsible, and well-grounded member of society ready to make a positive impact in the community and beyond. bancrofts.org A B S O L U T E LY m a g a z i n e s

EDUCATION • INTERVIEW

Meet the

HEAD Matthew Clarke of St Cedd’s School in Chelmsford

Q Can you give us a snapshot of your career history to date? A I qualified from Homerton in 2002 with specialisms in maths and the Early Years and started my career as a Year 3 and 4 teacher in the village school in Puckeridge, Hertfordshire. After six months a vacancy arose for a maths and ICT teacher at Felsted Prep, which I was successful in applying for and I stayed there for nine years, meeting my wife, having our children and generally taking on additional responsibilities to the point of becoming Assistant Director of Learning. In April 2013 I moved to St Cedd’s School as Head of Upper School (KS2), then became Deputy Head and, eventually in September 2018, applied for and got the Headship. Q Tell us about your current school… A St Cedd’s School is a traditional standalone

Prep School in the centre of Chelmsford. We have a reputation for high academic results and expectations of the children in our care whilst balancing this with the all-round

holistic education which one should expect from an Independent Prep School – we are far from a crammer for grammar. Q How do you like to run the school? A It is very much my role to ensure that

every member of the school community has a voice, feels listened to and knows that they can contribute to the smooth running of the school. We like to see happy, confident children in the classrooms and corridors as we know that is how they learn best. We have professional and highly skilled teachers in the school who make the magic happen on a day to day basis. Finally, I believe in working in partnership with parents, they are entrusting us with their most prized possession every day and it is our job to ensure that every child reaches their individual best during their time at St Cedd’s School. Q When are you happiest at work? A I am at my happiest when I am walking

round the school on a Friday awarding Good

Work Book stickers to those children who have made significant progress or had a major achievement in a particular area during that week. I go into every classroom in the school and see classes in action, talk to the children and teachers about their learning and celebrate all that has gone on throughout the week – nothing makes me happier or prouder. Q And outside of work, how do you like to get away from things? A I really enjoy spending time with my family, going for walks (although I think I enjoy these more than everyone else), watching a film all together on the sofa or quietly mowing the lawn on my own listening to a podcast. I have also started to learn to swim over the last 12 months, having never learned as a child, and enjoy the anonymity of my swimming lessons as well as developing a new life skill and having more confidence in the water on holiday.

LET IT BE

James Hunt, co-founder of Durden & Hunt, on why now is a great time to rent out your property

I

t is well reported that the housing market is a little slower than the highs of previous years; however if approached in the right way a seemingly tough market can present opportunity. One area that is continuing to experience growth is rentals; in fact Rightmove research suggests that each available rental home is receiving an average of 25 enquiries, compared to 8 in 2019. Further the number of tenants looking to move has increased by more than 40% whilst the amount of available homes has decreased by 35% (Rightmove), which continues to demonstrate the ongoing imbalance between supply and demand. If your property has been on the market for some time, and letting is a viable option for you, perhaps now is the time to think about becoming a landlord. Increasingly we are seeing a number of our clients considering both sale and rent as an option. Renting your property could be a profitable endeavour. Rightmove further reports rents for new lets are up 10.5% over the year, but it's important to know your home and the market to ensure it is a worthwhile venture. A way to begin determining this is to better understand the rental yield of the property both the gross, which is the

amount it will make, and the net, which factors in the cost of maintaining. Once yield is assessed you can consider this alongside demand, future house prices and your personal circumstances. Working with a lettings agent, such as ourselves, can also take away the hassle of organising and maintaining the property; from let only where we just handle finding the ideal tenant, to fully managed where we will look after the entire process and tenancy. Although considering these options is the only true place to start it can present as a daunting prospect, so if you’d be interested in a no obligation chat with myself do get in touch.

DECISION MAKERS Parental responsibility and your child’s education – a legal perspective By B E L I N DA ST R A N G E

BELINDA STRANGE

W

hether they are starting school for the first time or returning for the new school year, September is often an exciting – and possibly slightly nerve-wracking – time for children. It can be exciting for their parents too, watching their children blossom, grow and develop in the educational environment of their choice. But what if you are not happy with your child’s chosen school? And what if the person who chose that school is your ex-spouse or partner? Parental responsibility is a legal term that refers to the rights and responsibilities parents have towards their children. All mothers automatically have parental responsibility; a father has parental responsibility if he

is either married to the child’s mother or named on the birth certificate. If you have parental responsibility for a child, you are responsible for choosing and providing for their education, among other duties. If you were married when your child was born but have since separated, or you are a father whose name is on your child’s birth certificate, then you will retain parental responsibility even if you later separate.

AVOIDING CONFLICT In addition to respecting your ex-spouse or partner’s legal rights, including them in important decisions about your child’s life will also help to reduce conflict and minimise acrimony in your relationship. When there is anger, frustration and acrimony between separated partners, it can be easy to lose sight of what is important – your child’s wants and needs – and for resentment and spite to creep in. Sadly, communication with an ex-spouse or partner can be difficult, so getting good legal advice is vital. Attwaters Jameson Hill can help you explore your views before any educational disputes escalate. Our solicitors can help you with impartial, objective and practical advice, supporting you to communicate with your ex or even lifting the burden of communication from your shoulders entirely. We’re on hand to help you gain an understanding of the legal landscape, explore your options and decide on the way forward, ensuring you’re providing the best support for your child throughout. LAST WORD • EVENT why everyone is talking about…

GLOW Tickets now on sale for festive illuminations at RHS Garden Hyde Hall, one of the highlights of the Essex Christmas calendar

T

ickets for Glow at RHS Garden Hyde Hall, near Chelmsford, are now on sale. The enchanting festive illuminations return from 23 November through until 30 December 2023 (on selected dates). This year for the first time the RHS is working with lighting experts SLX on reimagined routes that will give visitors the chance to experience Hyde Hall in a totally new light. The magical winter walks will shine a light on some of the garden’s most spectacular sights after dark. New for 2023, enjoy a carpet of colour, mirror balls on the lake, and a dazzling fountain on the top pond. There’ll also be tasty food and treats to savour and warm you, and gifts galore to stock up on in the Christmas shop. Follow the trail up onto the Hilltop, past the iconic Thatched Barn, stopping to see a fountain on the top pond, before heading back down the hill through the Dry Garden, where you'll see a carpet of colour, mirror balls on the lake and lanterns lighting your way. As you head down the hill, take a moment to look out across the garden and experience breathtaking views of the Australia and New Zealand Garden. Then wander through the Winter Garden and be dazzled by the living willow sculptures immersed in festive colour. Take a pit stop along the trail at the Thatched Barn and tuck into tasty one-pot suppers or warming hot drinks. With no need to book, you can eat in or take away. At the Lake Cabins, enjoy take away hot food and seasonal treats. Clover Café will be open for winter warmers and snacks as you head in and out of the garden.

It’s the latest in a long line of milestones for the RHS. Since their formation in 1804, the RHS has grown into the UK’s leading gardening charity, touching the lives of millions of people. Across their five RHS gardens they welcome more than three million visitors each year to enjoy over 34,000 different cultivated plants. Events such as the world famous RHS Chelsea Flower Show, other national shows, their schools and community work, and partnerships such as Britain in Bloom, all spread the shared joy of gardening to wide-reaching audiences. Throughout it all they’ve held true to their charitable core – to encourage and improve the science, art and practice of horticulture – to share the love of gardening and the positive benefits it brings.
