LETTER ABSOLUTELY’S February issue highlights

I
ventured a little south over the Christmas period to enjoy the darts at Alexandra Palace. Normally it's just for the booze, but this year Luke Littler made it even more memorable. For those who don't know the name or are into darts, let me explains. Luke is the 16-year-old prodigy who beyond all expectations reached the final of the World Darts Championships. I saw him in an earlier round and it was fascinating to witness someone so young take everything in his stride and not crumble under the glare of the spotlight. At 16 I was floundering over my A-level choices, changing my mind constantly and feeling the pressure to pick the right ones for my future career (and I got that wrong, too). Luke put me to shame. Kieran Stanbridge isn't quite so young, but the company CEO has achieved plenty and he is only in his mid-20s. He told me all about his latest business, One Good Thing, and made me realise I truly wasted my youth. Enjoy the issue!

A unique exhibition opens this month with a special look at St Albans’ past
BECOMING US: African Caribbean St Albans, opening at St Albans Museum + Gallery on 16 February This exhibition will explore the role of the African Caribbean community in St Albans and celebrate its multifaceted contributions to the city over the past 80 years. Co-curated by Leeannas Wish and Active Lifestyles, the free exhibition in the Keeper’s Galleries runs until 30 June 2024 with a view to ‘inspiring the next generation and encourage people from different backgrounds to embrace a shared history’. The exhibition will focus on the period between 1948–1971, but will also refer to black St Albans residents before this time while celebrating achievements up to the present day. The main themes include; Windrush and Arrival, Working Lives, Overcoming Adversity, African Caribbean Culture, and Celebrating Achievements. To enable the museum to share the rich and diverse stories of local St Albans residents, a number of workshops were held where oral histories were captured and digital images and objects were identified for loan or donation, all helping to inform and shape the exhibition. A range of immersive experiences will be offered including a reconstructed 1970s West Indian front room using original ornaments and furniture loaned from St Albans residents - visitors will be invited to sit on the room’s sofa and listen to a curated playlist while filling in their own family tree. There will also be family activities, talks and a special portrait wall with photography by Stephanie Belton.

ambition to grow my own business. I think I developed that entrepreneurial mindset when I was studying business at school and then channelled that knowledge into setting up profitable charities when I first went into business marketing after leaving Roundwood Park School. Since then, I’ve worked for a number of not-for-profit companies as well as commercial businesses. Q What was it about One Good
Thing founder Mike Bedford’s vision that enticed you to join him? A From the moment I met Mike and was introduced to the product, I knew we were on to something. It was a magic that I couldn’t put my finger on, but given the current issues around plastic waste, especially within the snacking industry, it felt relevant and very futuristic. At that stage, it was quite literally just the product itself I had to go on, with no real branding or set recipe for the bars, so there was a lot of untapped potential there and I could see myself playing a role in shaping what could be the next “big thing”. To disrupt any industry, you need to have something unique, and I’d never seen anything like it before, so I just felt like I had to take the opportunity in front of me or I’d always be wondering “what if”? Each bar is made from raw cold-pressed, low-carbon ingredients and coated with a completely edible, 100% natural film, made from a mix of beeswax and other natural ingredients. Q What is the charity you
run, Thin Blue Paw?
A Thin Blue Paw is a national charity that
supports retired police dogs from across the UK. All the time dogs are part of the force, they get the best vet treatment available, but when they retire, there’s no pension plan for them to reward their hard work and years of service. So the charity helps support them with medical care, from lifesaving treatments to regular medications. It aims to give back some kindness to the dogs that help protect us in service.
Q Given all of the above, do you have much
time to relax and enjoy Harpenden?
A Harpenden is my safe haven! I have a very
hectic life personally and professionally, so it helps me strike the perfect balance. It’s a great commuter location that enables me to get into London quickly and easily. But it also gives me

three places in Harpenden – or further afield in Hertfordshire – do you enjoy visiting? A The Old Bell pub in Harpenden – amazing country pub, great food that’s reasonably priced. Plus, it’s dog friendly and has a log fire, so ideal to come and relax with Buddy after a long walk. Harpenden Leisure Centre – my brother is a local PT in Harpenden and being able to go to the local sports centre and have a relaxing swim after a hard day’s work is great. It really helps take the pressure off. Threads in Harpenden is a great store for gorgeous nick-nacks. It stocks some lovely things from local, independent artists that really sparks my creativity as a marketeer. It’s the ideal spot to pick up gifts for people or just to pass some time browsing with a hot chocolate. Q Can you recommend any dog-friendly
spots that you take Buddy too?
A The Nicky Line walk is a trail along a disused
railway line that I love to walk with Buddy. It takes you all the way up to Rothamsted Park in Harpenden, which is a lovely local green space to walk and enjoy with your dog.

“When it comes to the menus, think British pub classics, but elevated” Q Why was now the right time
for a refurbishment? A The site was well overdue some care and attention in many areas. We knew that we would have to be closed for about three months and there’s truly no great time for that to take place. That being said, the community deserved a fully refurbished pub and when is a classic country more beautifully enjoyed than Christmas time? Q Did you have to overcome
any challenges?
A The real challenge was timeframe and what
we wanted to deliver with the project. We were really conscious of keeping the character and history of the pub but having our take on it. It was key for us to ensure that the updates to our look didn’t entirely remove the essence of the pub’s soul. As we said before, the Bedford holds fond memories of special events for many folks, many of which took place in The Abbey Room (previously The Oak Room). From the wood-panelled walls to the iconic limestone-style fireplace, it’s a backdrop you can’t soon forget. I believe the designers and builders have done a wonderful job. Q What would you say is the
biggest change in the refurbished The Bedford Arms? A Our aim from the start was to create a more welcoming and open feeling to the pub and, ultimately, bring it back to its roots of being exactly that: a proper pub. By creating a new seating area, opening up the bar area and furnishing every corner with touches of plush leather and cosy cushions. I doubt there’s a corner of the pub where you wouldn’t happily feast away or pop down for a quick pint alike.
Q Who oversees the food operation? A Head chef Mariusz Hapke has joined us
and is leading his team in serving up some truly smashing dishes from our brand-new kitchen. Mariusz originally hails from Poland and has worked his way up from kitchen porter to head chef, so he truly knows every corner of a kitchen. Prior to The Bedford, he was chef at The Cock Inn, Sarrat.
Q How have you approached the menus? A Think British pub classics but elevated. Our
dishes are all created fresh, in-house and champion seasonal produce and local suppliers.
Q Can you suggest 3 dishes that showcase
what the food offering is all about?
A First and foremost, you can’t go wrong with
a classic, the Fish & Chips (recently dubbed “the best fish and chips I’ve ever had” by a guest). Unlike the traditional ale batter, our batter is created with cider, which makes for an unbelievably light and crispy fish (trust me, you
have to try it). Another staple, the Steak and Kidney Pie. Each of our homemade pie crusts encases an entire kidney so you won’t be going hungry. Finally, our Venison Gnocchi – a dish absolutely teeming with all the flavour and heartiness you’d want on a winter’s evening. Q Will the Sunday roast be a big thing for you? A Absolutely, Sunday lunch is one of the most important meals of the week so we’d be lying if we said we don’t intend to be the best in the area. From the dry-aged beef rump to the veggie wellington, every roast comes with plentiful helpings of roasties and gravy and homemade double egg Yorkies. Q What can you tell us about the accommodation at The Bedford Arms? A All 15 of our rooms have been beautifully refurbished so that a stay with us is idyllic from dinner to bed to breakfast the next day. We have 10 rooms located in the main building and five in the stable block just next door. Lovely views, comfy beds, premium Bramley toiletries and (come the summer months) air conditioning. And of course, we have dog friendly rooms for the four-legged visitors! Q Will you be offering plenty of specials and events in the near future? A You bet, we want The Bedford Arms to be at the heart of the community. From dog walks to supper clubs, quiz nights to an entire weekend of family friendly Easter activities, we have a whole host of exciting events in the works for The Bedford.

Grilled Eggplant with Garlic Serves 2 Eggplant (aubergine) is one of the most popular vegetables at late-night barbecue stands in China. In this recipe, we grill the eggplant in the oven with the same seasonings as those used in barbecue dishes. It can be served as an appetiser for dinner or can be eaten as a snack. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 20 minutes
INGREDIENTS • 400g (14 oz) long purple eggplant (aubergine) • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil, plus extra for brushing • 5 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 2 bird’s eye chillies, destemmed and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons chilli flakes • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) soy sauce • 1 tablespoon vegan oyster sauce • 1 spring onion (scallion), roughly chopped
METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Brush a thin layer of the oil on the outside of the eggplant, then place them on a baking tray on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn them around and cook for another 10 minutes. 3 In a bowl, mix the garlic, chilli, chilli flakes, cumin, soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and the oil. Put the eggplants on a baking tray, cut them open lengthways and flatten, then brush the seasoning evenly over the eggplants. Bake for another 6-8 minutes then remove and scatter over the spring onion. 1

Spring Onion Tofu Serves 2 Spring onion tofu is a popular home dish that requires very few ingredients: the tofu is simply simmered in a sauce with lots of spring onion until tender, juicy and full of flavour. It is also one of the quickest tofu dishes to cook if you don’t have much time to prepare a meal. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 2 tablespoons vegan oyster sauce • 1⁄2 teaspoon cornflour (cornstarch) or potato starch • 60 ml (2 fl oz/1/4 cup) canola (rapeseed) oil • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 10 g (1/4 oz) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
• 500 g (1 lb 2 oz) tender tofu, cut into 1.5 cm (1⁄2 in) dice • 3 spring onions (scallions), roughly sliced
METHOD 1 Tofu and spring onion (scallion) are a match made in heaven. Spring onion is almost always needed in tofu dishes, as it brings out extra flavour in the tofu. 2 In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, vegan oyster sauce and starch until well combined. 3 Heat a wok over a medium heat and, once hot, add the oil. Add the garlic and ginger and stir for 30 seconds, then add the tofu dice, moving them gently so they don’t break or stick to the pan. After 1 minute add the soy sauce mixture and stir gently. 4 Cover with a lid and allow to cook for 3-5 minutes, gently tilting the pan occasionally to avoid the tofu sticking. Remove the lid and add the spring onion. Let it cook until most of the sauce is gone.

In this recipe, the rice noodles are first cooked then stir-fried together with different ingredients. Check to see if you can find sword beans at your local Asian grocer, but if not, runner beans work just as well for this recipe. You can also add any other ingredients you like. Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes

• 350 g (121⁄2 oz) fresh rice noodles, or 200 g (7 oz) dried rice noodles • 120 ml (4 fl oz) canola (rapeseed) oil • 200 g (7 oz) tender or firm tofu, cut into strips • 6 sword or runner beans, cut into 3 cm (11/4 in) lengths • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) tinned bamboo shoots, drained and cut into thin strips • 2 shallots, thinly sliced • 100 g (31⁄2 oz) light-green zucchini (courgette), cut into thin strips • 5 shiitake mushrooms, soaked for 2 hours then cut into thin strips • 5 g (1⁄8 oz) wood ear mushrooms, soaked for 30 minutes then cut into thin strips
1 Bring a saucepan of water to the boil and cook the rice noodles until almost al dente (about 2 minutes less than the packet instructs), then pour them into a sieve and run them under cold water to wash off the starch. Drain, then soak them in fresh cold water. Be careful not to overcook the noodles, otherwise they will start to break while stirfrying. 2 Heat a wok over a medium–high heat and, once hot, add half of the oil and pan-fry the tofu until both sides are golden and crispy, then take it out. 3 Add the remaining oil and increase the heat to high. Add the sword beans and stir for 1 minute, then add the bamboo shoots and stir for another minute. Add the shallot and stir for 30 seconds, then add the zucchini and stir for another 30 seconds. Add the shiitake and wood ear mushrooms and stir for 1 minute. 4 Add the rice noodles and tofu and stir everything together. Add the hoisin sauce, soy sauce and vegan oyster sauce and mix everything together well, stirring for another 2–3 minutes until the sauce has been fully absorbed by the noodles. Add the sesame and spring onion.

air can hold both positive and negative energy, and an extension of your mind, holding your thoughts, emotions, stress, hopes, and fears. Cutting and styling your hair can be healthy not only for your hair, but for your overall wellbeing. The sociology of hair and its impact has been a concept that has been around for centuries. In a journal article published in the British Journal of Psychology, “Shame and Glory: A Sociology of Hair”, Anthony Synnott explains that hair is one of the most powerful forms of identity because it is both personal and public. Hair can symbolise physical strength and virility. The virtues and properties of a person can be concentrated in hair and nails. It is a measure of instinct, of both male and female seduction and physical attraction. Yet, hair is so much more than just physical (although its main purpose is intended to protect your head!). It’s a symbol of past, and future, times in your life, memories, and emotions. Cutting your hair can be a dynamic way of letting go, it is a part of your identity, so however you choose to wear it (or post it on TikTok) the choice is yours. According to a survey, mediumlength hair which shines with softer tones of combination colours are judged as making women look more intelligent. These natural styles are also linked to being good-natured. Shorter hairstyles which have a lighter combination of colours on a woman can make them look more outgoing and confident. Whatever you decide, be bold, be brave and enjoy the affair with your hair.

Understanding Common Cancers in the UK
In the UK, the most common types of cancer are breast, prostate, lung, and bowel cancer. These cancers account for over half of all new cancer cases in the country each year. Understanding the risk factors and adopting preventive measures is crucial in reducing your risk.
Diet: Your First Line of Defence A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and lean proteins is vital.

’ll confess, I’ve never been that flexible. My hamstrings are so tight that even touching my toes is a challenge. So I was intrigued when I was invited to try Pliability, a fitness app focused on mobility training. Formerly known as ROMWOD, Pliability was originally for CrossFit athletes. Since rebranding, they have expanded to provide daily stretching routines aimed at golfers, runners, swimmers, and gym-goers (like myself). Many people focus on strength and stamina in their training, underestimating the importance of mobility, coordination, and balance. Endorsed by professional athletes (including golfer
Lee Westwood), Pliability’s routines are a fusion of mobility, yoga, prehab, rehab, recovery, mindfulness, and strength. The first time I log in to the app, I am pleased to see that the daily routines are quite short. Most of the videos are 23-24 minutes, and I can easily fit a session in after I get back from the gym. The app suggests a new video for me to do each day, although there are hundreds to browse. The videos show two ‘models’, who take you through several poses in sequence. The one on the left shows less flexibility and the one on the right shows more. I am instructed to hold each pose for around 2-3 minutes by the voiceover. You need
very little equipment to do Pliability. All you really need is a mat, although blocks and resistance bands can come in handy if you are less flexible and need to modify the poses. After a few days I find myself really getting into it. It’s satisfying to mark the videos as ‘complete’ and see my progress charted in the app. Holding each pose and really focusing on it also becomes quite relaxing. t’s a bitterly cold Friday morning when I visit the new Blink Brow Bar salon on Avery Row in London. I’m freezing because I’ve worn the wrong coat for the plummeting temperatures, but I soon warm up once inside the cosy and inviting space. With a chic green and gold interior, it’s only been open for a few months, but it’s already a popular spot with beauty insiders. Blink Brow Bar is well-known for being the authority on all things brows, but I’m actually booked in to see the salon’s expert lash technician for a Dream Lash Lift/Curl and Tint. Sitting me back on one of the comfy reclinable chairs, she asks if I’d prefer a lift or a curl. As my natural lashes are quite short and stubby, she recommends a lift to lengthen and give me a fluttery lash line. First she perms my lashes straight, which requires me to keep my eyes closed. There’s a little bit of waiting, but it’s completely painless and the time goes quickly whilst we chat. Once my lashes are permed, I get to check the progress in the mirror. My lashes already look amazing, but there’s still the tint to go. The lash technician recommends a blue-black shade, to give me a glossy finish. She explains that pure black can appear quite flat. There’s a little bit less waiting this time, followed by an eye-bath, to cleanse. The results are very pretty – like I naturally have super long lashes. s a child, I always loved making. My mum is really creative, she’s self taught and has always had a creative project on the go, from crocheting to knitting and sewing, and I loved learning from her. My husband Marcus’ maternal grandparents had great taste and over the 60s and 70s bought some beautiful, quality pieces that he inherited. Through his early 20s he carted these around London from rental to rental. When I fell in love with him I also fell in love with his grandparents' beautiful 60s egg chairs. They were more than a little worse for wear, but I wondered if I did an upholstery course I could learn something new and maybe reupholster them in the process. I turned up on day one where we were taught to reupholster a drop-in
dining seat. I almost immediately thought ‘this is what I was meant to do’ and I genuinely have loved restoring every piece since (I reupholstered the egg chairs in a beautiful wool during the modern section of the syllabus and we loved them for years to come). I spent three years training to be a professional upholsterer, and in 2011, I received my qualifications from the Association of Master Upholsterers. Since training to be a professional upholsterer I have been honing my skills and technique across every style of 20th century furniture, both in terms of upholstery, but also wood restoration. I’ve had an online presence for a number of years, but recently it was clear that I’d outgrown working from home and started to look for a shop in St Albans. The one that is now ‘a fold of chairs’ is utterly beautiful, with leaded stained glass windows that give wonderful light – it’s one of St Albans’ original shop fronts. I think it’s important when you’re buying furniture to be able to touch it, especially if
it’s a chair; you want to be able to see how you feel sitting in it. I really enjoy interacting with people who love mid-century furniture, art and architecture and that’s not so easy to do online. I also believe that as a society we have lost touch with traditional crafts, we buy so much online and never really understand the processes that go into making things. Having worked with beautiful furniture for so long, I wanted others to appreciate the quality and longevity of vintage furniture and show what a sustainable choice it offered. Finally, seeing that shops were struggling to survive, and closing down, I felt I could play my part in trying to reinvigorate the high street, and even though we’ve only recently opened, I already love how the shop is allowing like minded people to connect. St Albans is full of creative people that love good quality design. I think they also really appreciate the skill and craftsmanship that goes into what I’m doing. succeed. There’s a great sense of community here, we’re all very connected, which means we let one another know when something new is happening in the city. We have assembled a carefully curated and ever changing collection of 20th century pieces from chairs and furniture to art and ceramics. We also offer bespoke upholstery and can source specific pieces of furniture. We have ‘a fold of chairs’ from the 50s, 60s and 70s, from a beautiful Ole Wanscher 1960s teak rocker to a newly upholstered 1960s desk chair by Danish design duo Preben Fabricius & Jorgen Kastholm. The large selection of midcentury studio pottery from St Ives has been really popular alongside the brightly coloured ceramics from 60s West Germany. My favourite piece we have in store currently is a small teak, Danish, 1960s console table on tapered legs with delicate drawers which we’ve restored and finished using Danish oil. It’s beautiful. I think more and more people are understanding the benefits of buying vintage furniture, not least because of the lesser impact on the environment compared to buying new, but also because you get to own something unique often from wood that is no longer forested, such as rosewood or teak. People really understand how great the quality of furniture made in the mid 20th century was – if it has lasted well for 60 years, it’s going to last another. There’s also the fact that you get to live with and enjoy a piece of furniture which is increasing in value each year. Marcus and I have been collecting mid-century furniture for 20 years and it’s astonishing to recall how much less we were paying for the same pieces a few years ago. Understanding the quality, time and craftsmanship that goes into each piece is a really important part of the story of furniture restoration. I think it would be amazing if you came to the studio, fell in love with a chair I was working on, got to see it being restored

and then were able to take it home. I’ve been quite overwhelmed by the response to the shop, it’s been met with such positivity and support. I have so many plans for the shop, I think getting myself to slow down might be my number one priority. I want to hold evening talks with designers and architects who embody our ethos and style. I’m also planning to show more of the restoration process, where you can see me weaving new cord onto a Hans Wegner wishbone chair or slip stitching an Arne Jacobsen egg chair. And the name? Fold is the collective noun for a chair, and I like to think that we are bringing the lost and broken chairs back into the fold to be restored. hoggarthstudio.com

Q What were your experiences of enjoying the performing arts as a child? A I started performing arts aged three and it shaped my entire future. I made friendships I still hold dear to this day, and my confidence grew along with my talent. I can’t imagine I would be the same person I am today without performing arts in my life. Q How do you think they helped shape the person you are today? A I think performing arts has so many lifelong benefits, even if you don’t pursue the arts. They helped me in public speaking, in job interviews and even in asking for directions on the tube! It also taught me discipline, timekeeping and something to focus my energy on. Q Do you think, in 2024, there are enough opportunities for children to get involved in the performing arts? A I do, however I think it’s important to find the right setting for yourself. Arts are often underfunded in schools, so it’s incredibly important to me that I can help a child access the arts, whichever walk of life they have come from.

Q What inspired you to launch Make Believe Ware school? A I was inspired to launch Make Believe Ware as I saw a friend launch and run a Make Believe school and I knew I could replicate it in my area. Q What is Make Believe? A Make Believe are a leading children’s
performing arts activity provider, and are the fastest growing extra-curricular franchise in the UK. They began in 2004 with just five students and one school, and now the company has grown to over 55 schools, 150 classes, 200 teachers and over 5,000 students. Q What do you remember about the first day you opened? A I remember being excited that as well as starting my franchise journey, I had a group of children all starting their own performing arts journey. I remember the excitable chatter in the queue as they waited to register and take part in their free trial. Q How do you look back on the six years since? A I look back with pride. I started the franchise with a plan that I could create an income

encounter if we popped in? A If you popped in you would see creativity. You would see children coming up with scenarios in drama, trying out a new dance step or singing a new song for the first time. I’d like to think overall you would feel the warmth and support we offer all around you. Q Have you seen many children come out
of their shell through what you offer? A So many! Some of the nicest messages I receive are those of parents so grateful to us for how we have helped their child. One little boy wouldn’t answer his name on the register on his first session. He now volunteers for
solos! I often get comments about how since joining Make Believe, their schools have noticed improvements in areas too. Q How does the school fit in with your family life? A I get to stay at home and raise my babies whilst still bringing in a contribution to the household. I can do my admin with a cup of tea when they have gone to bed, and now my little girl is three she comes with me to the classes – she loves it! Q As we head into 2024, what are your hopes for the school? A I hope to expand and offer a midweek class in Hereford. I have been asked for years now by parents if I could open one. I think 2024 is the year I take that step!

HIGHLY RATED Hertford Barns Day Nursery has been declared ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Absolutely finds out more
T
here was delight at Hertford Barns Day Nursery in Cole Green as proud parents and practitioners learnt that the setting had achieved Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ status, following their first inspection. An outcome achieved by only 14 per cent of all English Early Years providers, the inspector praised the “exceptionally skilled” team for creating an environment where children feel “safe, secure and comfortable” and “develop a strong sense of belonging”, helping them to “persevere when they find tasks difficult” and “feel a sense of pride in their accomplishments”. In the report, the inspector observed that staff “give the highest priority to developing children’s communication and language skills” and help to “listen and enrich their experiences by introducing new vocabulary and repeating words”, the
result of which “expands the language skills of all children, including those who are less verbal”. Partnerships with families were admired by the inspector, who observed that “parents are overwhelmingly complimentary about the nursery” and “speak very highly of the relationships that staff build with their children”, as well as being offered free training masterclasses and materials to “enhance children’s care and education”, alongside “frequent updates in a variety of ways to understand their child's development and how to help them further”. The inspector also credited the team for “actively encouraging children to care about the natural world”, with the nursery using the countryside surroundings to their advantage with initiatives including caring for lambs in the springtime. At Hertford Barns, children benefit from an award-winning eco-education, with Childbase Partnership last year being named as ‘Early Years Provider of the Year’ by Keep Britain Tidy for earning the prestigious Eco-Schools
‘Green Flag’ award in every single nursery setting, a record-breaking sector first, which recognises exceptional environmental awareness and conservation efforts. From babies using recycled resources for sensory activities, to pre-schoolers creating bug hotels for insect observations, crafting using natural materials and carrying out litter picking sessions in their local surroundings, children of all ages take part in the inspiring curriculum the whole year round. Ofsted Inspector, Elke Rockey, said: “Staff place children’s needs at the centre of everything they do. Children demonstrate exceptional confidence, curiosity, and keenness to learn. ore parents are getting savvy to the incredible education and opportunities state boarding offers, and Wymondham College is the largest state boarding school in the country and is an example of what these unique schools can offer. T
he desire to look up and to learn more about the skies that look down upon us has led to schools like mine creating opportunities for children to stargaze and learn more about the universe around them. Of course, participating in astronomy-based activities fosters an interest in science, but there is far more to it than that. Stargazing encourages children to use their imagination, to question the how and the why of everything around them
and it can even lead to exciting discussions around evolution and the power of gravity. Children are naturally inquisitive by nature, so having access to telescopes to widen their understanding of the skies and to better understand our own solar system helps them to develop their own verbal reasoning and logic as well as their vocabulary and literacy. Here at St Margaret’s, we are providing stargazing across all prep school year groups as part of STEM education, and we are even bringing astronomy into our nursery and up to pre-prep in Year 2. We have found that children are never too young to enjoy the awe and wonder of space. Looking up at the night sky can boost emotional development in young children and improve concentration and focus as they learn to observe quietly, taking time and space to contemplate the world around them. As we juggle the demands of the curriculum and make decisions on what to include, and what to reduce, subjects that open up children’s minds should be high up on school agendas. Stargazing provides wonderful food for thought and can transition across other subjects – including history, religious education and maths. For example, many children find it fascinating that the stars we are looking at are the same stars that amazed people throughout history. Likewise,
measuring distances from the Earth to the Moon and between planets in our solar system can be mind-blowing for young children. Making stargazing more accessible really does enrich learning opportunities. Children’s understanding can be supported through technology and specialist apps – which helps make it an appealing and accessible area of discovery to a much wider audience. As well as looking at stargazing as an integral part of the STEM curriculum, we are developing co-curricular programmes and clubs. Due to the popularity of the subject in the prep school, we are even opening our very own school observatory this year. Over the past few months pupils have been exploring why the balloon, named Fire Eye, will rise to the edge of Space, why it will burst when it gets there and how the parachute is going to let it glide safely back to ground. Operation Balloon are constructing their spacecraft complete with a 360° camera to record its journey to the stars. In spring, the children will carefully study weather reports in search for a break in the weather for the highly anticipated launch. Year 5 students at St George’s School Windsor Castle were delighted to learn that Toronto-based mixed-media artist, Andrew Wang, had provided glowing feedback on their recent art project. His work, which uses intricately folded origami birds to tell stories about journeys and migrations, was used as inspiration by the students for their own origami assemblage. Upon seeing the students’ work, Andrew Wang commented in an email: “Wonderful! I love the colour layout and that some of the birds’ wings are down giving the impression of wings flapping. St Albans School
Marking our education special, Joe Silvester is poised to take on the headship at the historic Hertfordshire school
S
t Albans School is one of the oldest schools in the UK and the world, beginning its existence as a monastic school, likely founded by Abbot Ulsinus in 948 AD. Fourteen years after the founding of the Church of England and the subsequent dissolution of the country’s Catholic monasteries, the monastic school was chartered as The King Edward VI Grammar School. It remained so for just over 100 years until the Civil War briefly abolished the monarchy and renamed it St Albans Free School. The school then continued to expand, moving from the Abbey to the Gateway in 1871. In 1976 it became independent and from 1991 admitted girls into the Sixth Form. Today, St Albans School still teaches in many of the original parts of the school; pupils feel privileged to learn in an environment steeped in such rich history. Now, St Albans School has announced the appointment of new Headmaster, Joe Silvester, who will take on the headship at the start of the new academic year in September 2024, following the retirement of his predecessor, Jonathan Gillespie, after 18 years of school leadership. “I am honoured and absolutely delighted to have been appointed as the next Headmaster of St Albans School,” Joe says. “I have been fortunate to meet a wide range of staff and governors through the appointment process and I have been struck by their warmth and dedication to the school and its community.” Having undergone a rigorous selection process, Joe really stood out as the worthiest candidate, Neil Osborn, Chair of Governors at St Albans School, explains. “Joe made a very positive impression on everyone involved in the selection process,” he says.
