Resolutions and Goal Setting for Teens

By Ava Cooyar, SRVHS Junior and Member of Danville Teen Council

With2023 in full swing, your parents have probably asked you the dreaded question: “What was your resolution this year?” It’s no secret that resolutions are hard to stick to, especially with a load of coursework as the new semester begins. Here are some tips on making and keeping your goals.

Picking a promise for the new year that keeps you motivated is essential. Choose something that is not impossible but still challenges you. Don’t set yourself up for failure! One way to come up with a resolution is by looking at habits that have caused you stress in the past. Remember that your goals have no limits- you can even try creating one with family or friends. Finding someone else with the same goal can be inspiring, and you can help each other stay on track. Let your creativity flow!

Keeping your resolution can be difficult; studies show that over 80% of them get forgotten by February. While it is true, there are small steps you can take to accomplish them. For example: try setting small goals that eventually lead to your resolution. Keeping a planner or leaving notes for yourself to complete your goal can also help keep you motivated. Another good way to keep your intent is by creating rewards. Is there something you want to buy? Why not try making it a reward for yourself if you complete your objective? Incentives are great for keeping you motivated!

Setting Goals and keeping them can be difficult, but if you follow through, you’re bound to complete them!
