February Equals

Self Care, Family, Friends, Coworkers

By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

February is equated as the month of love. Commercially, February exponentially explodes the sale of roses, boxes of chocolate, and a girl’s best friend - diamonds. But more broadly and importantly, February is the month to celebrate relationships. February is the month of self-care, family, friends, and significant others.

I wrote about the importance of self-care last year. If you are not your best self, it is difficult to be your best for others. Assuming, you followed the article “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (Feb, 2022), you are ready to empower those around you by being present in every relationship of your life.

Relationships are essential to our well being and define who we are. Beyond romance, healthy relationships with family, friends and coworkers act as endorphins for our mental and physical stamina. I thoroughly enjoy the times I share with my family. But I have to be cognizant to recognize how I am being present for each of them. Am I creating a safe space for each to find their best selves? I appreciate reflecting on the individuality of each family member and to celebrate what each member brings to me - almost like nourishment - to strengthen my best self.

Likewise, your career is at its best if relationships on the job are healthy where mentoring and support is part of the work culture. If this is not part of your work experience, it may be time to evaluate the power you have to create a healthy and safe atmosphere at the workplace. I do believe that it is possible to create a work environment that doesn’t feel like work because you enjoy going to it every day

The last ingredient - friendships - are a major part of the formula for a healthy mind and body. Whether I am with high school friends from years ago or newly developed relationships, I value our conversations to teach me and help me grow. The phrase “You are the company you keep” resonates for me. If the company I keep does not help me flourish, I may need to redefine the relationship.

February = Self care + Family + Friends + Coworkers. This equation has the power to support your health inside and out. The balance of these ingredients, if added correctly, can empower you and those around your to celebrate wonderful relationships and a full life.
