Call Family Full House, Full Hearts

T

he Call family began in a public speaking class in early 2010 when Maggie arrived five minutes late to class. “Even to this day, always a little behind, but worth the wait,” Elliott, a Danville native, jokes. “I remember thinking to myself- green eyes, olive skin and well spoken, I’m in! It’s one of those catalyst moments that changes your life, and you had no idea it was coming.” Unfortunately, despite Elliott’s best efforts, Maggie was in a long term relationship with her high school sweetheart, so their paths did not cross for another two years until his first year of medical school. “I was lonely to say the least. In the basement of the library in the middle of Texas, my nose half buried in a physiology book, I received an email,” Elliott states. A month after her breakup with her long term boyfriend, a group of friends dared Maggie to message Elliott and reconnect. The plan worked. Elliott was thrilled she followed through and was on a plane that weekend for their first date; pizza, a bike ride, and smores over a candle (university budget). “Only problem was I forgot the marshmallow sticks, so we had to improvise with sticks from a nearby bush,” and the rest is history. After a surprise proposal in front of the Grand Tetons a year later, the two were married on a snowy, cold day in Salt Lake City, December 2013.

Despite the newly found romance, the honeymoon phase was far from that. Maggie had to leave a kindergarten class she was teaching mid-semester to move to Texas, as Elliott studied for his first round medical board exams. “It was a difficult six months. Elliott was in an intense year of school while I was adapting to my new life away from home,” Maggie says. Elliott recalls, “looking back on it, we were young, completely naive as to the challenges that we would face, but Mags was always there to support me. More than simply enduring, Maggie thrived, developing life long relationships with fellow teachers and students.” Maggie had always been drawn to teaching and found her time as a kindergarten teacher rewarding, albeit exhausting at times. “Kindergarteners have a place in my heart” Maggie says, “They are adorable and always curious, sometimes a little too curious- one funny memory is when I was reading a book on reptiles to the children on the carpet, and one student raises his hand and says, Mrs. Call, is that like reptile dysfunction?” Despite her love for teaching, Maggie ultimately chose to suspend her teaching career and raise her young family while they relocated from Texas to New Hampshire. Things were about to get more difficult as the couple then moved to New England for further medical training. “That first winter was shocking,” says Maggie, so cold were the sub-zero temperatures that your eyes would water and then freeze causing them to water.. then freeze more. “I literally wore ski goggles on my runs,” jokes Elliott. But the Calls made the most of their below freezing winters, by soaking in the New England summers on the beach with blueberry ice cream and lobster rolls. Three years in New Hampshire started with homesick tears, then ended with tears of gratitude as they said goodbye to lifelong friends. “Easily the most challenging and fortifying years of our family thus far,” Elliott says, “there is something incredibly powerful about two people finding strength in one another when times are difficult.” In the final year of his education, Elliott reconnected with Dr. Robert Greenberg, whose son he had known at Monte Vista. Dr. Greenberg had a successful and established dermatology practice in San Ramon, lending Elliott an opportunity to head back west and raise his own family back in Danville. Maggie is from Salt Lake City, and not being a California native, she was curious although tentative about the move back to California. “I had heard so many things about Danville through Elliott but found them hard to believe. But now, three years here, and it’s hard to disagree!” Maggie admits. When the brief moments of free time emerge between caring for four young children all below 7 years old, you can find Maggie enjoying some personal time reading and organizing. “The container store should send us a VIP card,” Elliott jokes. “No but really, Maggie is amazing at organizing- something you don’t appreciate until you see it first hand.” Maggie also loves to have days on the mountain snowboarding and cooking for her family. Elliott knew from his anatomy classes at Monte Vista that medicine was going to be his profession, although his early ambitions of becoming a surgeon were tampered when it dawned on him the irony of his name. The thought of “Dr. Call is ON CALL was too much to bear. I enjoy sleeping way too much.” That led way to an interest in outpatient

medicine and ultimately dermatology. “It has been one of the best decisions of my life. I absolutely love what I do. I see kids, adults, elderly, and everyone in between and have a blast with it. So very grateful to be able to practice in my very own backyard, in the town I grew up in!” It also helps that he can easily enjoy an early morning sunrise bike ride up Mt. Diablo before he starts his days at the clinic. Four young children keep the Call family busy and sure to elicit the “wow, you’ve got your hands full” comment at the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Charlie (7) is a second grader at Montair and has been mastering the art of comic book drawing and running cross country. It must be the shorts, or perhaps the ribbons, but his love of running is surely making his parents proud. Peter, (5) and in Kindergarten at Montair, recently started playing for Mustang soccer, entertains the family with his daily animal facts and obsession with ketchup. The first princess of the bunch, Penelope (3), loves dancing, the colors pink and purple, and accessorizes her princess dresses with her favorite bracelets. The baby of the family, sweet June (1), is sure to put a smile on anyone’s face. She is the “easiest” of the bunch and provides her family with lots of laughter and perspective on how grateful they are to one big happy family. Although the Calls do not have any pets, the winning goldfish from last year’s Alameda County Fair, barely made it home, just to have a “proper burial in the side garden next to the dead tomato plant.” It was a valiant effort to keep them part of the Call family, but alas, the garden is where they reside.

With a full house of small children, they admit they “know their limits” with regards to big vacations. For the time being, they plan day trips to the beach in the minivan “throwing in some tacos on the way home, tip toe around the tantrums and call it a day.” Not to sell themselves short, the Call family did a recent summer vacation in the minivan to Montana…52 hours of driving, 3300 miles, DVD’s, headphones, and lots of gas station stops...Elliott can’t believe that Maggie was able to put up with him for all of those hours at a time. “I’m pretty sure she almost took the keys and left me at a gas station in Nevada.” Thankfully, she did not, and back home in Danville is where they ended up. Moving back home to Danville was a priority for Elliott. Although it may have been a tough sell to convince Maggie to move to California, she has thrived in the area. Elliott was able to convince Maggie that there is something “truly unique” about the small town in which the community is built on close relationships with neighbors, a fantastic education, nearly perfect weather and a plethora of outdoor and recreational opportunities. After renting for a few years off of Estates Dr, the Calls recently bought a home in the Town and Country neighborhood. Having grown up off of Green Valley Rd., Elliot acknowledges that it is only recently that he has come to appreciate how much the west side has to offer. He is grateful for the daily opportunity to “bump into old friends, families, mentors, and coaches that still call Danville home.” You will be sure to see Maggie at Trader Joe’s picking up frozen pizzas for their regular family movie nights, or perhaps you have even run into the Calls walking in town. With a family of 4 little kids, the Calls greeting for their neighbors is “You will hear us before you see us!” From the Danville Living family, we can’t wait for both!

Feeling Stuck? By W. Todd Galde, CrossCountry Mortgage, LLC

Ready to Move but You Don’t Want to Sell First?

Buying your next home BEFORE you sell is possible and easier than you think! You are ready to make the move, downsizing to a smaller home, transitioning to a retirement community, moving to be closer to the grandkids, or maybe relocating out-of-state. Whatever the dream is, you are ready! You may have even found “the one,” but you are feeling stuck because you think you have to sell your current home first and then you think of everything you have to do to make that happen, like moving all of the things you’ve collected over the years to storage, doing repairs and renovations, replacing your weathered furniture with a more contemporary look… and you give up the dream because you feel stuck! There is good news for people feeling stuck: with enough equity, you can buy your next home BEFORE having to sell your current home. In fact, did you know that over 75%

of homeowners in Danville have enough equity and can buy their next home before they must sell? 75%! Are YOU one of them? If you are considering moving here are some of the advantages of buying your next home before selling your current one.

1. Locate your dream home now

When you are able to buy a new home before selling your current one, you have more time to explore different properties and neighborhoods without feeling rushed. You can take your time to find the home of your dreams without worrying about the added pressure of having to move out of your current home quickly… and your offer on the new home will be non-contingent on selling your old home!

2. Avoiding temporary housing costs

Having to live in temporary housing until you can find your next home can be expensive and inconvenient, especially if you have a family or pets. When you buy a new home first, you can avoid these costs and move directly into your new home.

3. Less pressure to accept lower offers

When you have moved out and your current home is fixed up and properly staged, you’re in a better position to negotiate with potential buyers. More buyers will be interested in your home and this competition will ensure you get the highest possible offer.

4. Avoiding a rushed move

When you buy your new home before selling your current one, you can take your time to pack, organize, and move at your own pace without worrying about strict deadlines.

14

5. Ability to make renovations or repairs

If you buy your new home before selling your current one, you have the flexibility to renovate the new home before moving in, fix up the old home without you in it, or both! In either case, you won’t have to deal with the inconvenience of living in a construction zone while you’re making these changes. Buying your next home before selling your current home can have significant benefits. By giving yourself more time to find your dream home, avoiding temporary housing costs, and having the flexibility to make renovations, you can ensure that your next move is a smooth and stress-free process. Additionally, with less pressure to accept lower offers and avoiding a rushed move, you can make sure that you get the best price for your current home and enjoy the process of moving into your new one. New Year, New Foods! By Kaylan Rizkalli, Member of the Danville Youth Council

I

t’s a new year, meaning that not only is it time to start on your New Year’s Resolutions, but it is also the perfect time to expand your horizons and get outside of your comfort zone. A great way to do this is by trying some new foods from various different cultures, and Danville has many yummy restaurants perfect for this. One fairly new restaurant in Danville is Falafel Boy on Hartz Avenue! With a plethora of rich, Middle Eastern foods to pick from and even more side dishes, you’ll be sure to find something you love. The restaurant also has many vegan and gluten free options such as the Baba Ganouge, a rich, creamy side dish made with Tahini and eggplant. Another great option to try is the Chicken Shawerma or really any of their specialty wraps. If you want to try some delicious and healthy Middle Eastern food, then this is the place to be! Another restaurant that opened up in Danville around this time last year was Nick the Greek. Nick the Greek is a fantastic

restaurant that is super in touch with their community. According to their official website, for every Jerry rice bowl sold, one dollar is donated to the 49ers Foundation. The 49ers Foundation uses football to empower children all over the Bay Area, and is strongly supported by Nick the Greek. So, if you want to try some yummy Greek food, like their extremely popular Gyro Bowls, and help out the Bay Area, be sure to stop by. Lastly, if you’re craving some mouth-watering Thai food, check out the Lotus Thai also on Hartz Avenue. With a wide variety of foods to pick from off of their menu, diners can enjoy anything from the Honey Grilled Pork to Fresh Avocado Rolls. Plus, if you love their food, like I know you will, you can even order catering party trays for some delicious meals that will make your guests never want to leave! All throughout Danville, there are awesome new places to try different foods and appreciate many cultures from around the world. With the new year upon us, this is the perfect time to get out there and try something new!

FOSTER KITTEN PROGRAM CHOOMBA - FOSTER KITTEN

Hi - my name is Pompano. The shelter volunteers say that I’m an easy-going dog. I’m a handsome brown and black Shepherd mix around five years old with ears that sometimes slightly flop over. I currently weigh 81 pounds. The volunteers appreciate how patient I am when they come to take me in or out of my cage. I also sit politely for treats and take them gently. I know basic commands like ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘shake’.

With quick intervention, TVAR was able to have him seen by the veterinarian, where it was determined he had a bacterial infection in his gastrointestinal tract. Choomba was given antibiotics and supportive care in his foster home and quickly recovered and began to grow and thrive once again. Helping kittens like Choomba is made possible by TVAR’s compassionate fosters and donors. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

“Learn to behave as if...” Dr. Harry Edwards

By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

T

hink of everyday as practice. If each day demands your best self, and you perform at your best, you will get your best.

What a great philosophy to start 2024! Imagine that every day you wake up knowing that you are going to be challenged and that you are expected to perform at your best. Athletes do this before any game. What keeps us from realizing that this philosophy can motivate us to make every day a new commitment for self improvement and in turn, through example, improvement of others? The quote above is from Dr. Harry Edwards, a professor of mine when I attended UC Berkeley, Dr. Edwards lived and strived to change people’s perspective about themselves and their ability to change others. As a renowned sports psychologist and a consultant for the San Francisco 49ers, his philosophy towards athletes including people like Jerry Rice, provides a foundation and perspective to motivate the best in any person. Rice believes that you have to “Look the part, act the part, to be the part.” If you are not taking the time to present your best self, how is anyone else going to feel your full potential? Whether you are setting an example for your family, your work environment or for others you meet, take the time to reflect on the image you wish to project.

Putting Your Health First

This image can be as basic as how you dress and present yourself to what you wear to go to the grocery store. My mother lectured me as a little girl to look and act your best. You don’t know who you may run into or who you may influence. If this used to be you and something has changed, maybe it’s time to carve your new path. If this is something you aspire to but are stuck, EYHLIFECoach can partner with you to figure out where and why you are stuck. 2024 can be your new beginning to rejuvenate the best of you. Happy New Year!

Don’t Wait Until You’re Ready By Lisa Hopkins-Cochran, Realtor® at Compass

I

f you’re like me, you prefer to invite people into your home on those rare days when everything is as close to perfect, as possible. I’ve found that too many people feel this way about inviting their Realtor over, especially when they’re thinking about selling their home. Don’t wait! The best time to invite your Realtor® over to talk about selling your home is before you start getting the house ready. Why? A good Realtor® is a wealth of knowledge. We can advise you about which pre-market projects make sense….and which ones don’t. We also have great contacts and can often put you in touch with just the right tradesperson to help you get things done. If there is enough time to prepare, we may be able to make suggestions that you hadn’t considered. Often these are small, simple updates that bring you the highest return on investment. In our local market, most home sellers provide buyers with “premarket” inspection reports. Your Realtor® can help you decide which inspections are important for your sale, and which (if any) repairs should be done prior to marketing. Did you know that many stagers can help you with preparation, as well? Most will gladly advise you on just the right paint colors for your home, flooring choices and other selections, saving you the time and aggravation of trying to make those decisions. A talented stager will have an eye for “what could be” in your home…usually at very little expense. They know that it’s most important to make sure that your home photographs well, as nearly all buyers decide in advance which homes they are willing to consider touring, based primarily on the marketing pictures. Your Realtor® can introduce you to talented, local stagers. Do you have strong equity in your home? Did you know that your Realtor® may be able to help you with no cost options that allow you to access some of your equity in advance of the sale, in order to prepare your house for market? This can be a huge help with covering the cost of improvements, repairs, cleaning, moving, storage & more.

Finally, if you’re like me, it’s amazing what you get done when there’s a deadline approaching. It’s sort of like that last half hour before guests arrive. Creating a plan with your Realtor® just might be what you need to keep you on track, so that you can list your property for sale at the best strategic time. Every home sale is unique. If the thought of selling your home has you feeling overwhelmed, please feel free to reach out to me at 925-9645010 or via email at Lisa.Hopkins@Compass.com for a custom analysis of your options. Even if you’re not ready to make a move today, it’s never too early to start planning for success. DRE#01111126.

New Year, New Hope: Resolutions for Caregivers By Eunice O’Farrell, Executive Director, Carefield Pleasanton

A

s the confetti settles and the glitter fades from another holiday season, many of us turn our attention to the New Year, brimming with resolutions to improve ourselves and our lives. But for caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s or dementia, the usual resolutions – “get fit,” “eat healthier,” “travel more” – can feel daunting. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can be a demanding and everchanging journey. Before you give up on the idea of resolutions altogether, consider reframing them as acts of self-compassion and resilience that can benefit both you and your loved one.

Prioritize Self-Care: Your Cup Must Overflow to Pour for Others

Imagine a beautiful vase, brimming with love and care. That’s you, the caregiver. But if you pour endlessly without refilling, the vase eventually empties. This year, resolve to fill your own cup first. Schedule that longoverdue massage, join a yoga class, or simply savor a cup of tea in quiet solitude. Remember, a healthy and replenished you is a better caregiver.

Embrace the Power of “No”: Boundaries are Beautiful

Saying “no” can feel like a betrayal, especially when faced with the pleading eyes of a loved one. But boundaries are not walls; they’re fences that protect both you and your loved one. This year, resolve to set clear limits, whether it’s delegating tasks, saying no to extra commitments, or simply taking a break when you need it. A well-rested and empowered caregiver is a more effective one.

Find Joy in the Journey: Laughter is the Best Medicine

Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s can be a rollercoaster of emotions. But amidst the challenges, there are moments of pure, unadulterated joy. This year, resolve to savor those moments. Laugh at silly jokes, sing old songs, and dance like nobody’s watching (even if someone is!). Remember, laughter is the best medicine, and joy is a shared language that transcends memory loss.

Connect with Other Caregivers: You Are Not Alone

Caregiving can be a lonely journey, but you are not alone. This year, resolve to build your support network. Join a local caregiver group, connect with online communities, or simply reach out to a trusted friend. Sharing your experiences and burdens with others who understand can be a lifesaver.

Celebrate Small Victories: Big Changes Begin with Tiny Steps

Forget the grand, sweeping resolutions. This year, focus on the small, everyday victories. Did your loved one remember your name? Did they enjoy a walk in the park? Celebrate these moments! Remember, progress in Alzheimer’s care often happens in tiny, incremental steps. And each step, however small, is a cause for celebration. The team at Carefield Pleasanton is always available to answer your questions about memory care for your loved one, and the benefits of a community. Join our caregiver’s brunch and support group - contact Carefield Pleasanton by calling (925) 750-8744 or visit www.CarefieldPleasanton.com today.

Cooking Corner

Sunday Sauce By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

Y

ou don’t have to be Italian to love a good Sunday sauce. This dish goes by many names, and comes in many different styles. Sunday gravy, sugo or just plain red sauce. Sometimes it’s spicy, sometimes it’s heavy on the tomatoes or heavy on the meat. There really is no wrong way to make a Sunday sauce as long as you add a heavy dash of love. I came up with this recipe when I was short on prep time and only needed a two person serving. This recipe can always be doubled or tripled if you plan to feed a crowd. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which pasta to serve this over. I’m going with angel hair because it’s my husband‘s favorite. Small-batch Sunday sauce Time: 7 Hours. 30 minutes of active cooking. Serves: 2-4

You will need;

• 1-2 sausage link (casing removed) hot or mild • 1-2 pound bone-in beef shank, cross cut • Drizzle of olive oil, divided • 3/4 C. Yellow onion, finely chopped

• 1 Celery rib, finely chopped • 1/2 C. Carrot finely shredded • 2-3 Cloves fresh garlic, finely minced • 1/3 C. White or red wine • 1 tsp. Dry Italian seasoning • 1 Can high quality Italian crushed tomatoes • 1 Can 8oz tomato sauce • 1/3 C. Chicken broth or water • Salt and Pepper • A big dash of red pepper flakes (optional)

Putting it together;

Pull out your crock pot and set it to low heat so it can warm up. Next, rub the beef shank with salt and pepper and set aside. In a sauté pan, heat the oil and brown the sausages until it’s no longer pink, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer it to the crockpot leaving the sausage grease. Add a little oil to that same pan and sear the the beef for 2 minutes on each side. Transfer the beef to the crockpot. Add a little more oil to the pan and throw in the onion, carrots and celery. Sauté on medium heat for 3-5

minutes or until the veggies are soft. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Add the wine and cook for another minute. Add the tomatoes, Italian seasoning, spices, broth and salt and pepper to taste. Once it comes to a boil, pour the tomato sauce over the beef and cover it. After 6 hours, the meat will be tender and hearty. Add more salt and pepper if needed and remove the bones that were in the beef shank. Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or polenta with lots of parsley and parmesan cheese. Stephanie Seaberg has lived in the East Bay for the last 30 years, and is a SRVHS Alumni. Steph is a play-writer and director for Theater Performance Workshop, KAOS Camp, and Golden Oak Montessori. Steph lives for cooking, theater, photography, travel, and singing.

New Year and New Beauty Membership Plan By Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS

A

t Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we recognize the challenges of maintaining beauty goals and regimens, which is why we decided to provide customized Beauty Membership plans. A few months ago, we launched a new membership plan powered by PRIVI. This new plan offers numerous advantages, including discounted pricing for MedSpa services and products, convenient monthly payment options, and priority scheduling. Achieving and maintaining your beauty goals is akin to maintaining an athletic club membership; both require usage and consistency. Just as a healthy and active lifestyle is essential for maintaining an ideal body weight and shape, aesthetics demand a regular commitment for optimal results. Our new PRIVI Beauty Membership plan offers a straightforward, affordable solution to establish and sustain a consistent appointment schedule for various skin care and cosmetic treatments, such as HydraFacials, dermal fillers, “tox” injections, laser treatments, and other non-surgical procedures. For HydraFacials, we utilize a patented device that provides exfoliation, cleansing, extraction, and hydration to the face. Sun exposure, pollution, and stress can harm skin cells, hindering the production of collagen and elastin—the crucial components for healthy, radiant, and youthful-looking skin. HydraFacial treatments work by exfoliating damaged cells, hydrating tissues, and cleansing with antioxidants. Peptides and hyaluronic acid are then applied to revitalize and protect the skin, promoting collagen and elastin production. Not only are HydraFacials effective, but they also provide a soothing and relaxing experience with instant results. Dermal fillers, administered through injections, are a popular non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment. They are designed to reduce lines, creases, and areas that appear “sunken-in.” Dermal fillers work by restoring volume to areas that have lost it, resulting in a smoother, more youthful, and enhanced appearance. Beyond addressing volume loss, fillers can also be used to augment and enhance lips, cheekbones, or the chin.

Botox, Dysport and Daxxify are three different “tox” injectables we offer to address wrinkles associated with frown lines, forehead furrows, and crow’s feet caused by muscle action. Both Botox, Dysport and Daxxify are simple proteins that are injected into a muscle to create weakness. By precisely and temporarily weakening these muscles, we can soften expressions and reduce or eliminate wrinkles and frown lines. If you want to learn more about our new PRIVI Beauty Membership plan or how HydraFacial, dermal fillers, and “tox” injectables can enhance your appearance, please contact our office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you and helping you look your best in this new year!
