seismic shift was felt around the world these past few years, seeming to coincide with the onset of the global pandemic. Most of us are tired of thinking or talking about it, but we cannot deny what was revealed in its wake. It’s been a long time since such racism, inflation, or discussions of war between superpowers were front and center in the news, and it almost seems we have made very little progress in the past forty years or so. The “shaking,” as I refer to it, has stirred up a lot of unresolved issues that need to be dealt with sooner rather than later. Only unity can replace division—with love over hate, peace over war, and a sense of identity for those who feel lost. An emerging mental health crisis has brewed from all the turmoil, and it would be impossible for me not to address this when presenting our Health and Wellness Issue. Humankind is in a season of intense introspection and retrospection. If we all take time to meditate and pray about this while working toward individual reconciliation in our daily lives, it could make all the difference. Even one person can effect change. Just like taking one step at a time leads us to our destination, so will taking steps toward personal awakening. We can all do something for the bigpicture issues, and reaching out to whomever you can help or love is an excellent first step. This is very much part of what well-being and living a balanced life are all about. It’s not just about eating well, going to the gym, using the best beauty products, or taking time for yourself to read a good book or connect with friends. Yes, we have all of that and more in this beautiful issue, but it is crucial also to understand how we are all connected. Be mindful of that when relating to humanity at large; we all have a significant part to play in the well-being of humankind and our planet. The older I get, the more introspective I have become, which I think is part of the normal cycle of life. I marvel at nature and its beauty, as well as its ordered sense of renewal. Flowers blooming in springtime can warm the heart as they give hope that seeds do blossom in time. They inspire renewal in us, as well. I take so much inspiration from nature for my creative ideas: the spectrum of colors, the magnificent patterns of zebras, the mane of a lion, the vibrant red of the cardinal, the gorgeous peacock, or the sweetness of a dog’s face that melts my heart. With each passing year, I find myself more drawn to nature and creatures great and small as I marvel at the beauty found in God’s creations.

An obsession with butterflies from childhood is still with me today, and I’m drawn to their likeness in pieces of jewelry or art every time I see it. I’m not the only one who feels this way. A butterfly can signify a lighthearted spirit, beauty, and freedom. In flight, they appear to be dancing. The monarch butterfly is one of the most beautiful, and we have been blessed to see their migration from Canada and the northeastern states to Mexico each fall when they flutter through our hometown headquarters of Grayton Beach, Florida. Read our cover story, “The Magic of Transformation,” as Addie Strickland interviews Allyson Longshore to learn about her love affair with the monarch butterfly and her business, Metamorph Blooms. As a creative person, my mornings are key to setting the tone for my day. Morning rituals are everything. I brew a fresh latte in my kitchen and put on a good mellow morning playlist—I’ve really been into jazz lately. I like to light a pretty candle and wake up with the sun. Also, I have a zero-screen-time policy for at least an hour after I wake up. Let your mind wake up naturally and take in the softness of the morning before jumping into the digital world.

Bring creativity into your everyday life. Pray while folding laundry. Forgive your enemies because nothing ticks them off more and frees you up at the same time. Remind people and pets that you love them. When decision-making, consider how it might affect you in ten minutes or ten years. Have you ever wondered what the magical transformation of metamorphosis looks like? With wings that glisten in the sunlight, the monarch butterf ly emerges from the safety of a gold-speckled chrysalis to bring color and life to our days. Fashion stylist agent Allyson Longshore is the founder of Metamorph Blooms, a company born in Seagrove Beach, Florida, that is proactive in preserving the beautiful monarch butterf ly species by coupling it with a phenomenal f loral presentation. The beginning stages of Metamorph Blooms happened in 2020 when Longshore moved her luxury fashion styling agency, STYLESTUDIOLIVE, from New York City to the Gulf Coast of Northwest Florida. After traveling back and forth for years, she is now based fulltime in the beach community along Scenic Highway 30-A but still offers fashion concierge services to clients around the country. With a longtime desire to grow a garden and time on her hands during the COVID-19 shutdown, she hit the ground running to cultivate something new. Soon after her garden started to grow, Longshore noticed eggs all over her plants and later, little caterpillars roaming around helping themselves to the ample leaves. She did some research and learned that her cute new garden friends were monarch caterpillars—and they were laying their eggs in her garden! Upon further investigation, she found that the monarch butterfly is listed as an endangered species. “The odds are against them,” she explains, “hence their rapidly declining numbers due to mosquito trucks, pesticides, predators such as lizards and frogs, and even ladybugs that eat monarch eggs from the host plants. Out of four hundred eggs laid by one female butterfly, typically about ten of those will make it to adulthood.” When asked how she came up with the idea for Metamorph Blooms, Longshore tells the story of an organic coincidence that led to the birth of the flourishing business: “I started raising monarchs and gardening as a form of therapy during the pandemic and purchased butterfly rearing enclosures to do so. One caterpillar formed a chrysalis in an awkward spot in the enclosure. It needed to be moved to survive

From the vibrant colors of the orchids to the natural gold designs on each chrysalis, the enchanting arrangements juxtapose the antiquity of the blossoms and the new life forming upon them.

and complete its metamorphosis. I researched how to do this process safely, and that was when the concept of fusing florals and the monarch chrysalis came to fruition.” A gorgeous orchid was sitting on a table nearby, and she secured the chrysalis to it for safety. In this foretelling moment, Longshore remembers noticing the hope of new life that it brought to her house. “Essentially, I styled that butterfly chrysalis onto an orchid arrangement the same way I do with a human and a fabulous pair of shoes—or the same way an interior designer styles a chandelier into a bedroom.” As a therapeutic and artistic pastime, she began to put together more orchid-and-chrysalis arrangements and dropped them off at friends’ and family’s doorsteps to brighten their days during quarantine. They were an instant hit, of course. With a growing number of people requesting an arrangement, Longshore created an Instagram account for inspiration. She adds, “Overnight, I had three hundred direct messages asking me if I ship.” This outpouring of feedback pushed Longshore to officially launch the Metamorph Blooms website and expand her resources to offer nationwide shipping of the Metamorph Monarch Bloom Box on March 1, 2021, just in time for spring—the season of life! 26 | M A R CH 2 0 2 2

ongshore notes that with her background in luxury styling, she always loved florals in fabrics and design, and if she had not gone into the fashion industry, she wanted to work with flowers. Incorporating her styling expertise into her orchid arrangements elevates the company’s ethos and sets it apart from the typical florist. Each ceramic pot is adorned with a wax drip seal, and the packaging includes French silk ribbons and a tassel, a blooming and butterfly release guide, and a handwritten note if requested for the recipient. A portion of proceeds from each Bloom Box purchase is donated to the Save Our Monarchs Foundation. Over the years, learning about metamorphosis has been geared toward fun and educational experiences for kids. The goal of Metamorph Blooms is to engage and inform all ages. The company delivers a masterpiece created by nature’s paintbrush with a touch of high fashion for a truly magical experience. From the vibrant colors of the orchids to the natural gold designs on each chrysalis, the enchanting arrangements juxtapose the antiquity of the blossoms and the new life forming upon them. The warmer temperatures in Florida allow monarch butterflies to lay eggs year-round, and Metamorph Blooms can ship almost any time, as long as the temperature is not too extreme. Longshore adds on the topic of production, “I’m at the mercy of Mother Nature. If the butterflies don’t lay eggs, I can’t make my arrangements. Producing something with a chrysalis as the focal point is a practice of patience.” All of the chrysalides for Metamorph Blooms come from Longshore’s garden in Northwest Florida. Last year, she released eight hundred monarch butterflies there, and this year’s goal is to double that number. In addition to hopefully doubling production, the company hopes to offer other chrysalis species such as swallowtail butterflies and luna moths. Ideas for the future also include workshops and a sponsored garden for the community to have a hands-on impact and possibly a process called “tagging,” which would allow customers to track the travel and migration of their butterflies after they hatch. he feeling of wellness can often stem from a sense of place. Humans desire to surround themselves with beauty, be it from nature, decoration, or the very architecture of a place. Feng shui and mindful design are important, but so are the bones of a home, office, commercial space, or outdoor structure. Areas designed with a deep understanding of their uses and the people who will inhabit them are the most profound. Being in a space created with human connection in mind can promote calm, thoughtfulness, and overall health and happiness. Architect Paul McClean has made it his mission to design homes where the residents will feel and be well.

Based in Los Angeles, McClean Design is one of the leading contemporary residential design firms in Southern California. cClean’s projects reflect an interest in modern living and a desire to connect residents to the beauty of the surrounding natural environment, promoting a sense of mental and physical relaxation. “Wellness is a very topical consideration in residential design,” McClean says. “We have always sought to connect our clients with water and nature for serenity and healing.”

A cornerstone feature in many of McClean’s designs is incorporating water in various exterior spaces through pools and fountains. He also often uses oversize windows, folding or sliding door systems, and expansive pergolas and patio areas to eliminate the barrier between indoor and outdoor living. systems can maximize views and provide warm interior spaces filled with natural light, so homeowners get the best of both worlds. The architect continues, “In our busy lives, most of us have become disconnected from the environment around us. At McClean Design, we firmly believe that being connected to nature is beneficial to well-being. Water is central to our designs, and we have been including wellness areas in our homes for some time.” Where homeowners were once content with converting a spare room into a gym or yoga studio, McClean says the mindset of wellness at home has shifted.

His clients often ask for a larger space to dedicate to exercise equipment and floor work. Some have integrated full-on wellness retreats into their homes by adding a spa, steam room, sauna, or massage area. Outdoor spaces might include a meditation garden or waterfall. “We are also seeing increasing interest in sensory deprivation chambers, full hammams, light therapy, and salt walls,” McClean expounds. “Water massage, different types of plunge pools, and water therapy in the form of horizontal showers are popular; we have even integrated snowmaking as part of the wellness experience.”

He explains that although most homes with these dedicated therapeutic spaces place them adjacent to a home gym, that isn’t always the case. There has been a rise in luxury homeowners building private wellness retreats located in the master suite or even in a separate structure apart from the main house.

Wellness in the home can (and should) also mean promoting the health of the environment. McClean is committed to sustainable design practices and works to protect the environment surrounding each of his projects. As a member of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Los Angeles chapter, McClean and his firm just signed the AIA 2030 Commitment to make their home designs carbon-neutral/ net-zero by 2030. The architect also expounds upon his sustainable practices and love for bringing the outdoors into the home in the book McClean Design: Creating the Contemporary House, released in 2019.

“I would personally love to design a wellness area in a separate building, as part of a contemplative private garden,” McClean says.

CUISINE BY A three-star Michelin chef, high-tech touchless therapies, and bathing like Bond are all on the menu at an Italian palace turned medi-wellness retreat: Palazzo Fiuggi. The sensation of sinking into sun-warmed sands overwhelmed me as my therapist contoured thousands of tiny quartz crystals around my tired limbs. The ancient Egyptians took baths in the Sahara Desert to treat respiratory conditions, and 1,500 miles away in central Italy, I discovered psammo (Greek for “sand”) therapy has a modern twist. Nestled in the foothills of the Apennine Mountains, less than an hour’s drive from Rome, the thermal town of Fiuggi has long been a mecca for holistic wellness. Once bottled for European royalty, its therapeutic waters were credited with curing the kidney stones of Michelangelo and Pope Boniface VIII. Seven centuries later, the town’s health-giving H2O continues to gurgle out of its two springs: the Fonte Bonifacio VIII and Fonte Anticolana. And thanks to a sumptuously restored palace, the fashionable twentieth-century spa town is in vogue once again.

Famed for installing one of the country’s first outdoor swimming pools, the art nouveau stunner where Ingrid Bergman spent her summers, Palazzo Fiuggi returned to its restorative roots last May. The masterminds of Forte Village, an iconic destination spa on Italy’s island of Sardinia, are behind Palazzo Fiuggi’s $34 million reboot—transforming nearly 65,000 square feet of conference and meeting rooms into a modern, marble-clad temple to wellness. Satisfyingly, the 102-room hotel’s illustrious history lives on in its Murano glass-chandeliered dining room and frescoed ballroom. The ballroom has been converted into a movement lab where virtual reality

fans can try Icarus, a high-tech exercise machine that makes users feel like they’re flying through space while working their cores! Once graced by Pablo Picasso, these hallowed halls are now filled with fluffy-robed wellness pilgrims shuffling between appointments. Most stays begin with a consultation by an in-house doctor, who customizes one of Palazzo Fiuggi’s four science-driven programs according to guests’ personal wellness goals. Billed as holistic-meetshigh-tech health, offerings include everything from reflexology to retinal scans, alongside lab analysis, medical aesthetics, and signature spa therapies like the “hydro cure.” I discovered that the highlight of this hour-long, three-step treatment is being wrapped like a mummy in warm volcanic mud before being hosed down with alternating piping hot and teeth-chatteringly cold water. A favorite bathing regimen of 007 in Ian Fleming’s novels, the aptly named “Scottish shower” reduces inflammation, my therapist explained. Next up is a private dip in the hotel’s twin thalasso pools. Fed by Fiuggi’s springs and enriched with detoxifying salt and magnesium, the water had the other guests and me bobbing up and down like corks! Unfortunately, there’s no champagne popping at mealtimes, which are strictly non-alcoholic and noncaffeinated affairs. Still, everything else measures up to a fine-dining experience, from the classical piano music to the elegantly plated fare masterminded by three-star Michelin chef Heinz Beck. A certified sommelier and cookbook author, Beck devised Palazzo Fiuggi’s Mediterranean-inspired menu with a specialist in biological aging and genetics. not a celery stick in sight! Instead, think zucchini spaghetti followed by sea bream in licorice crust on a bed of coconut puree, garnished with fennel and orange salad. The ingredients are also primarily organic, thanks to Fiuggi’s precious water. A local law safeguards it and the surrounding valley (where Beck procures his pesticide-free produce) from contamination. Residents of Fiuggi still hydrate straight from drinking fountains scattered across town. On the fringes of its historic center, I admired Piave Square’s castiron fountain, which was erected to commemorate the arrival of running water in 1907. Nearby is the old casino, which now serves as Fiuggi’s Town Hall, designed in the Italian Liberty Style that characterizes Italy’s spa cities. The following morning, after a breakfast of a fluffy egg-white omelet and smashed avocado with tomatoes, I made a pilgrimage to Fiuggi’s clutch of churches. The standout is San Biagio, which vaunts a fresco of Madonna and Child by Giotto’s school. Next, I tackled the pre-Roman old town’s ankle-buckling stone staircases, which connect laneways like Vicolo

Baciadonne, nicknamed “alley of the kisses.” Squeeze through, and you’ll be rewarded with pretty piazzas, Renaissance windows, and tavernas serving up molti medieval atmosphere! Back in the warm embrace of Palazzo Fiuggi, I thawed out in its 7,500-square-foot Roman Baths, tethered to the main building’s wellness wing via a glass passage. This is where salus per aquam (Latin for “health through water”) comes into its own. The floor-toceiling windowed sauna affords knockout views of the old town, where I watched wisps of fog dance across terra-cotta rooftops. Between the immunestrengthening Kneipp therapy circuit and infrared sauna (which I was told was drawing out toxins from my fat cells), I whiled away an entire afternoon.

I learned that infrared technology is not just reserved for cedar cabins but can also be harnessed for cognitive health and sleep. Later that evening, I joined a handful of guests in wearing the hotel’s must-have accessory: a stress-busting headband activated by a simple smartphone app. Over an herb consommé with vegetables and red quinoa, Dr. Lorenzo de Stefano told us how the breakthrough light therapy device enhances the brain’s natural functions. ith its breathtaking sun-drenched tropical beaches and crystal-clear water, a slower pace of life is instantly palpable upon arrival to Nassau. It is a foreign feeling for someone who is used to going through life at a breakneck speed, but a three-day excursion to this island paradise was what I needed last October. Officially known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, this sovereign country lies within the Caribbean and includes 700 islands, cay, and islets, with only forty inhabited. Though it is one of the smaller islands, New Providence is the most populous and home to Nassau, Bahama’s capital city. While en route from the Lynden Pindling International Airport to The Cove (one of five hotels to choose from at Atlantis Paradise Island), our driver shared tidbits of history and future developments underway. One notable was the 1000-acre high-security estate where Sean Connery lived until his death in 2020 at ninety. Connery was introduced to the Bahamas while filming his iconic character, 007, in the James Bond franchise. Our anticipation was heightened upon reaching the freshly renovated Cove. sland life is often dreamt about but seldom carried out. Many of us can agree that the best memories are ones in the sun, relaxing in the salty air, detached from the stress of an agenda. At home, we listen to guided meditations or calming ocean sounds, trying to achieve this sense of unbothered bliss our bodies so profoundly need. We may add self-care rituals such as taking a long shower or practicing yoga to our regimen to take a load off, but sometimes we need more. Occasionally it may take traveling to a beautiful island to remind ourselves of the beauty of being alive. Tropical islands make these blissful feelings much more accessible thanks to their welcoming communities, warm weather, picturesque views, and sense of detachment from ordinary life. A

lthough its own country, Aruba is one of six Dutch islands nestled in the Caribbean. The diversity here is as abundant as its beauty. The local population represents over ninety unique nationalities, speaking up to four languages: English, Spanish, Dutch, and Papiamento. Papiamento, also spelled Papiamentu, is the native tongue of the island, a creole language heavily based on Portuguese and Spanish. Visitors can expect to be greeted with the phrase “Bon bini”—Papiamento for “Welcome”— the moment they step off the plane, or anywhere in Aruba for that matter. The locals in Aruba are what earned the island its cheerful moniker. The love for life and the joy that radiate from the welcoming community are infectious. Perhaps it’s the breathtaking surroundings that cause such sanguinity among the people. The landscape in Aruba is uniquely distinct through the contrasting white beaches and turquoise water against the desert-like terrain. Rain is rare, and hurricanes are nonexistent as the island lies far outside the hurricane belt. There are more cacti than palm trees, but Aruba will quickly redeem your vision of a tropical island. The arid climate offers its advantages, such as low humidity, cooling winds, and perfect weather essentially all the time. It is easy to see why many travelers are so loyal to Aruba, often coming back every year for more sunny times. When designing the milestone structure, Lapidus made sure to complement Aruba’s most distinguishable features: the views, of course, but more notably, the wind. Visitors are blown away to learn the wind is a prominent Aruban trademark, constantly blowing due to the island’s proximity to the equator. While inconvenient for ill-fitting hats and loose napkins, the wind does have a redeeming quality for lost travelers. The strong currents bend the famous divi-divi trees, so they always point southwest toward the hotels, serving as the perfect natural compass for the island. The whimsical trees can be seen all around Aruba, and there is even a life-size divi-divi sculpture behind the hotel’s Mira Solo bar due to its groovy aesthetic and pivotal ties to the island.

While it may have been the first hotel on the island, the Hilton was by no means an amateur project. Designed by one of America’s most famous architects, Morris Lapidus, the structure is an architectural gem. Lapidus is mainly known for his iconic Miami Beach hotels, such as the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc. He admitted in one interview that he was initially confused when prompted to design a high-rise hotel in then-bare Aruba. Yet, after visiting the fifteen pristine acres of beachfront land, it was a no-brainer. Aruba was the Caribbean’s best-kept secret.

After multiple identity changes and renovations, the structure eventually became the Hilton in 2015. Nonetheless, reminders of the resort’s legacy are everywhere through vintage photographs hanging throughout the hotel lobby and in the rooms themselves. Guests feel connected to the property after viewing the images of past travelers enjoying the island just as they are. Hilton Aruba’s commitment to celebrating its past is one of the many reasons the resort continues to thrive.

While the climate may be arid, the divi-divi trees are by no means the only shrub at the resort. Hilton Aruba works diligently to ensure guests enjoy a tropical island experience through the lush gardens around the resort. Strolls throughout the grounds are made even more enjoyable by the vivid colors of the abundant landscaping. The gorgeous gardens are also home to various bird species, which guests can mingle with, but beware of the parrots—they are not afraid to speak their minds! Other inhabitants here include magnificent koi fish and endless iguanas. The resort is even home to rare aqua blue iguanas, a truly majestic sight.

s for the hotel quarters, Lapidus strategically designed the central tower so the Aruban breeze blows through each room. In addition, all rooms have private balconies facing the gardens, the sparkling Aruban seas, or both! Of course, the view depends on which tower guests are staying in; the Aruba Tower is the tallest and grants the best ocean views, whereas the Curacao and Bonaire Towers are not as tall but are closer to the beach. Regardless of which room guests reserve, they all include stylish interiors, room service, Wi-Fi, a mini-fridge, a TV, and more luxury amenities. Room options include guest rooms with a king or two double beds, handicap-accessible rooms, and elegant suites with features such as a separate living room with a queen-size sofa bed and even a jetted tub. The most lavish room option is undoubtedly the spacious penthouse complete with three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, and 645 square feet of open-air rooftop patio—yes, please! ow does an English major from Russia become a Floridian beekeeper intent on helping her community through natural honey-based remedies? It might seem like a stretch, but a background in the wellness industry led Eve Emelianova down the path to her current mission when she moved to the South Walton area of Northwest Florida in 2005. “Aquarius Spa in Seaside was where I was first introduced to healing arts and, later on, my work at East of Eden Retreat and Spa really inspired me to go further with skin-care education, overall wellness, and the holistic approach to living,” she explains. Further exploration into this approach and all-natural home remedies led to the happy accident that bred HoneyMed, Emelianova’s locally sourced, honey-based “Vitality Elixir.” “HoneyMed is a direct response to my prayer for a creative idea, which showed up when I had the flu in 2018,” she recalls. “I was trying to heal myself with any natural remedy available in my house. Luckily I had a jar of honey and some spice, as well as lemons and garlic. My grandma’s recipe came to mind; she mixed all those ingredients to cure a cold and called it ‘Russian penicillin.’” V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 87

Its benefits range from nutritional to antibacterial, and studies have shown that ingesting honey from local hives can improve symptoms for those who suffer from seasonal and environmental allergies. “The spice in this blend is quite amazing too,” she explains. “Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Ginger is known to soothe the stomach. So does cayenne pepper, which also cleanses the blood, speeds metabolism, and boosts immunity. Together, these ancient ingredients positively affect our overall well-being by increasing vitality, elevating energy levels, and promoting alkalinity in the body’s pH balance—which is paramount to staying healthy, especially nowadays.” HoneyMed gets its sweet main ingredient from the Barrett apiary, led by third-generation beekeeper Earl Barrett. Barrett’s beehives are scattered throughout the woods in the Point Washington State Forest and Peach Creek areas of South Walton, making HoneyMed a true local remedy for residents with allergies.

After mixing up her grandmother’s go-to remedy, Emelianova says her flu was completely gone in a matter of a few days. She began sharing the mixture with friends whenever they got sick, and their quick recoveries inspired the idea of turning the elixir into a business. “The name HoneyMed is a play on words,” she reveals with a grin. “It’s a natural medicine, and the very word med means ‘honey’ in Russian. So, technically, it’s ‘honey honey.’”

“Our area is blessed with unique, hypoglycemic (low sugar content), very fragrant, sunshine-colored tupelo honey harvested from the trees along the banks of Choctawhatchee Bay waterways,” says Emelianova. “Earl is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to honey and bees. He is an amazing individual, a former pastor who cares greatly about the health of his bee families and the superb quality of the honey they produce. We typically feature two kinds of honey: tupelo and wildflower. Both are the most local honey to the 30-A area and the surrounding zip code. You could say it’s ‘beach honey.’”

The biggest challenge in creating HoneyMed, like most small businesses, was getting started. “Initially, I dealt with a bit of self-doubt and lack of funds,” says Emelianova. “Fortunately, once I started, HoneyMed received the warmest welcome from our local

VIE: What drew you to the wellness industry? DR. PRECOURT: The journey started a long time ago with an injury when I was nineteen, which is when I discovered there is another way to heal the body. While playing rugby, I experienced a low back injury resulting in three bulging discs and partial paralysis. After multiple doctors told me to take certain pills and completely give up sports, my mom turned to a chiropractor for other options. I learned from him that the body has the capacity to heal itself when given the opportunity through proper alignment, rest, and nutrition. That’s what planted the seed. It was a completely new way of thinking for me.

VIE : Where did you study, and how long have you practiced in this field? DR. P: I have been practicing for twenty-five years since graduating from Life University in Atlanta, but education is nonstop. Graduation was merely an opportunity to get a license, an entry point into the field. I’m drawn to any additional education that demonstrates how to enhance human function. There have been incredible advancements in the last five to seven years as science and holistic, alternative types of medicine have come together. We understand how to facilitate human health and function better than we did in the past. The strategies are clearer than ever now, and the tools we have to put those strategies into play have become mainstream. The idea is to practice “health” care rather than “sick” care, and the emphasis is on nutrition. At the very, very grassroots level of it, we have a sick culture, and healing starts with nutrition.

DR. P: We offer functional lab testing and nutritional consults as well as chiropractic care, acupuncture, yoga, and massage. We are a fee-for-service office and have established relationships with labs that make most of our tests much less expensive than insurance co-pays.

VIE : What is Prema Organic Cafe, and how did it evolve from the Balance Health Studio mindset?

Nutritional consults are conducted virtually via Zoom, which is one of the nice things that came out of COVID. Through them, we can connect well with the clients. From there, most people proceed with á la carte services in a concierge-type setting. But there is an option for a full-health coaching protocol as well. The concierge program is typically for people with busy lifestyles. These clients know

We also talked with other locals who have this lifestyle, and we’ve taken a tremendous amount of input from them, incorporating a lot of those ideas into our menu.

VIE : What are some favorite menu items? DR. P: To my surprise, the acai smoothie bowl. People who travel here from all over claim we have the best bowl in the country. We had no idea that would happen because it wasn’t designed to be our specialty. Also, our pesto chicken salad has been a huge hit. The chicken is 100-percent organic, and we make our own 100-percent organic mayonnaise too. similar to what we do in our own lives and show people how healthy eating can be fast, easy, and super delicious.” When we opened, it looked like it was the worst time, given the pandemic; but it turned out to be perfect as people became more focused on their health and were also looking 96 | M A R CH 2 0 2 2

for substantial meal options to-go. Now over a year old, Prema Organic Cafe offers 100-percent organic, gluten-free, canola oil-free, soy-free foods. Most menu items are dairy-free, and some are designed for keto diets. Everything in there is essentially medicinal food. Crafting the recipes was the hardest part and took

The best thing about our menu, though, is that just about anybody can come in and know they don’t have to pick it apart to find something to eat. They can throw a dart, and anything it lands on will be delicious, 100-percent organic, and healthy.


Bon appétit! VIE : What is your goal for these businesses? How do you see Balance Health Studio and Prema Organic Cafe impacting the community? DR. P: The word impact is always what comes up. When we opened up Balance Health Studio, the goal was to have an impact, to make having a healthy lifestyle just that—part of a lifestyle. Our community has really embraced that. We now have a place where people can go to find other likeminded people and socialize, build friendships, and be supported. We’ve been told since 2000 that organic costs too much and you can’t get it, but we’ve always believed it should be a norm here on 30-A. Whether it be Austin, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Nashville, or any other large city where our visitors travel from, every place has this type of café. South Walton should be no different. In the end, we hope that more restaurants will do what we’re doing so we have even more healthy options.

The other impact we want to have is in health education. If you’re not taking care of yourself, you’re creating part of the problem. If we take care of ourselves, that is a huge step in the right direction.

The results are amazing when they follow the strategies and develop lifestyle habits. In the last couple of years, we’ve seen more challenges with anxiety and hormone issues than ever before. Fortunately, all the tools we use have brought tremendous results. The best thing about what we do is seeing people who have used age as an excuse for their health issues begin to change. As they create a healthy lifestyle, we see them revitalize. That forty-to-fifty-plus age

DR. P: I host a live podcast every Tuesday night where we bring on some fantastic guests and take live questions. We cover anything and everything to do with health, weight loss, biohacking, hormones, whole foods, and new trends. It has become one of my favorite things to do, and it’s a great tool to expand our impact. We’ll tackle any question or topic our audience has, from arthritis to intermittent fasting and everything in between. We focus on short snippets as the overall goal is to emphasize that health is simple. Improve the way we move, eat, and think, and we improve our lives.

herapy is cool,” says Dr. Cheyenne Bryant, a former marriage, family, and child therapist who has transitioned to a successful career as a Psychology Expert Life Coach, speaker, and author based in Los Angeles. Her first book, Mental Detox, helps readers “learn to stand in your own power and know your own authentic voice,” just as Bryant aims to help her patients and clients do through each session, seminar, and conversation.

While Bryant prepares to launch her second book, The ABCs to Mental Health, and plans a weekend healing retreat for March 2022, VIE caught up with her to get her best advice and inside information on therapy and other positive mental health practices.

VIE: What led you to become a life coach? How did that path evolve into your other arenas, such as public speaking, authorship, and more?

Dr. B: I became a life coach and

wrote my first book because of my own healing journey. Once I learned how to make peace from my broken pieces, I couldn’t keep that blueprint to myself. Mental health and peace of mind are human rights. The transition from broken to healed is a deep, scary, and lonely experience, but it doesn’t have to be done alone and is more effective when done with a professional. Because I experienced my healing journey and process firsthand, it provided me tools and wisdom that my education and credentials could not. My desire to change lives and help others heal was so strong that I decided to not only found the Dr. Bryant Institute (my life coaching institute) but also to write my first book, Mental Detox.

and trauma they didn’t know existed. It’s about finding the root of an individual’s loneliness, darkness, and sadness. We also help people realize how amazing and powerful they are. Many clients leave their first session feeling empowered after realizing they, like all of us, have issues to work on and strengths they are unaware of that can empower them once brought to light.

VIE: Attending virtual therapy sessions is even more popular since the pandemic, but some people might think it won’t be as beneficial as in-person sessions. Can you tell us why that may or may not be true?

Dr. B: Virtual sessions are just as effective, if not more effective, than in-person therapy. Many of my clients are in the comfort of their homes, offices, or cars during our sessions. Allowing people to be in environments that they choose promotes authenticity and vulnerability. It also makes therapy more convenient for people such as the at-home mom or dad who can’t get away long enough to drive to an office. Virtual sessions allow them to sit in their car or go to another room while the baby is sleeping or the kids are playing. I’ve had a client sit in her closet during

VIE: What was your main goal in writing Mental Detox? Dr. B: The goals and intent behind Mental Detox are to change the life of every reader and bring peace, hope, healing, and authenticity to all who read it by providing them the tools needed to feel, deal, and heal. I had no idea my book would do so well, becoming a Readers’ Favorite five-star book and keeping me booked in the speaking circuit. Seeing how life-changing it was and how responsive people were to my hybrid coaching approach, I began facilitating Dr. Bryant Institute workshops. People began flying in from all over the world to attend. What started as workshops for individuals on a personal level also turned into me facilitating seminars and retreats for corporations such as NBCUniversal, Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation, and many more. VIE: What are the main benefits of therapy that anyone can take advantage of ? Dr. B: The most significant benefits of my hybrid approach—therapy and life coaching combined—are a decrease in depression, anxiety, and stress and an increase in confidence, self-love, overall mental health, and quality of life.

VIE: Why do you think there has been a stigma surrounding therapy, and how or why is that changing in today’s society?

Dr. B: There is a stigma around therapy because there isn’t enough education and awareness around mental health to normalize it. This leaves individuals feeling ostracized and alienated when seeking or receiving help. Fortunately, that is changing today. More professionals in the field are minority and culturally competent, making it more accessible and attractive to many of those in need. VIE: What are some things a therapist can help with that people might not realize at first? Dr. B: Therapy and coaching can help people get in contact with pain pockets 106 | M A R CH 2 0 2 2

sessions while her kids played in the room outside it. That was the only way she was able to receive help. Virtual sessions have made it easier for people around the world to receive support, as well. I have clients in Dubai, Panama, Africa, Haiti—the list goes on. I absolutely love virtual sessions!

VIE: How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected mental health on a large scale? What are some ways people can cope with the stress and anxiety from it?


Dr. B: From my experience, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected mental health

FOR ARTIST MARGARET BIGGS, NATURE, HEALING, AND CREATIVITY ARE ALL WRAPPED INTO ONE MISSION TO PROMOTE WELLNESS IN THE VIEWERS AND COLLECTORS OF HER COLORFUL OIL PAINTINGS.

G

rowing up exploring the banks of the Gulf of Mexico, the bays, and the bayous near Pensacola, Florida, gave Biggs an appreciation for the cathartic properties of the natural world. From an early age, she connected with the flora, waterways, and skies that brought her hope and inspiration. Today, as she splits her time between Pensacola and Portola Valley, California, she gets a broader variety of inspiration from the varying species of trees, flowers, and animals that roam in each location. Also a passionate practitioner and, soon, instructor of meditation, Biggs says, “Mindfulness and meditation are pathways to inner peace.” Biggs is halfway through her Mindfulness Meditation Teacher’s Certification Program taught by two of the great spiritual leaders of a generation, Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. The two-year course aims to provide instructors with the tools to “teach awareness and compassion-based practices through understanding the principles underlying meditation, exploring the interface of meditation with Western

psychology and cutting-edge science, developing teaching skills, and much more.” Having experienced much emotional hardship throughout her life, Biggs explains that meditation and art, each stemming from the peacefulness she has found while immersed in the natural world, have helped her on her own healing journey. The energy she puts into her paintings must be palpable to those who view them, as well, because they have adorned the walls of medical facilities around the United States. Healing a broken spirit isn’t easy, but it’s something Biggs wholeheartedly believes can be achieved through deep self-reflection, meditation, and mindfulness practices. Her Broken Shell series of paintings represents that journey by depicting different seashells that are cracked, weathered, and worn but no less beautiful.

T

he Scotch bonnet is a species of shell found up and down the mid-Atlantic states of the US and along the Gulf shores of Florida,” Biggs says of her recent painting entitled Broken Bonnet. “The broken specimen I found has had a place of honor on my shell shelf for many years now. Little more than two inches long, the whorl that once housed a snail’s body has been completely removed, leaving the axis of this spiral shell visible. In this painting, the goodness within each of us is represented by the axis. At the core of the univalve shell, it often remains intact even when the shell has been badly broken. There is beauty in brokenness. None of us gets through life without suffering and pain. Unfortunately, it often takes painful events and challenges for us to finally turn away from the superficiality of today’s world and focus instead on our inner life.” 112 | M A R CH 2 0 2 2


Biggs urges her audience to consider how they can live peacefully, let go of selfish desires, and find ways to practice mindfulness and service to others that will be mutually fulfilling. She poses the heartfelt question, “Though we may have been deeply hurt, are we willing to turn that pain into compassion?” Another Broken Shell piece titled Against the Sky further shows the twists and shadows within the seashell’s inner valve. “The beautiful shapes of the shadows within the broken shell are not seen when the shell is fully intact,” Biggs explains in reference to this painting. “Often, it is the shadows in our lives that bring us to the point when we become ready to look deeply at ourselves, at our faults and foibles, and begin the healing process.”

She continues, “The broken seashells I paint are used as operating metaphors for the aging process we all must endure and the painful events that will inevitably come our way, should we be lucky enough to live a long life.” Also a poet, Biggs clearly has a way with words as she emphasizes the story behind each of her paintings and shares her innermost thoughts with the world. “My artwork always needs a PURPOSE beyond just being pretty,” says Diane Naylor. “A painting is just like a person. Outward beauty is nice, but there must also be DEPTH , SUBSTANCE , or purpose. It must evoke a feeling, whether happy or sad. As long as the viewer is able to feel SOMETHING, then I believe my work is a success.”

D

istinguished as an artist who portrays nature, Naylor’s passion for animals and the environment stems from growing up amid the rolling hills of eastern Iowa. Relaying her experience, she says, “Its rivers and woodlands were an inspiration. I rode bareback almost every day on my horse for a country block—four miles— from age sixteen onward. I rarely liked to stay inside, and God’s works of nature gave me great peace and happiness.”

Although each of her series is visually distinctive, their common thread is Naylor’s kinship with the natural world. Referring to a collection she calls The Early Years, the longtime vegetarian says her animal paintings (seemingly from the pages of storybooks) “were made anthropomorphic to let the viewer understand how precious the animals’ lives are, just as ours are.” In her Labyrinth series, portraits of enlarged pods and seedlings, which are typically hidden or overlooked, allowed Naylor to express “how valuable life is—and we aren’t to take it for granted.” V I E MAGAZ INE . ikewise, Naylor explains that the recent decline in the bee population inspired a series about the planet’s crucial pollinators. “The first painting sold to a client in Seaside, Florida, during October 2016—the same month and year that the first bee went on the bee extinction list.” Rather than taking a doom-and-gloom stance, she has her bee paintings “popping more with color than my previous series of animals.” Additionally, she reveals, “They have an almost graphic look to them, as I wanted to keep the backgrounds in sync within the series so they could be mixed and matched in the future.” Thus, they harmoniously illustrate her self-published collection of Bee books (Bee Kind, Bee Cause, and Bee of Good Cheer), which deliver positive, introspective messages in quotes, Psalms, and other Bible verses.

Guided by her faith, Naylor offers her latest series, God’s View, to “reflect God’s glory.” She says, “My life changed in 2019 on the morning of Good Friday. It’s a long story, but after that day, I had a new lease on life.” From visiting the coastal region of Northwest Florida since 2007, Naylor decided “what better glory” to showcase than the beach and the waves of that beautiful area. Fittingly, she would grant “a view from above.” Describing her process, Naylor says, “With an aerial view, I start by painting upon panels with oils and then create the ocean with resin and powder in different aquatic colors. The contrast from the matte of the beach made in oils with the reflective surface of the resin ocean gives a 3D effect to a 2D painting.” Having worked in oils exclusively for some time, she says, “Resin is a new medium for me, and after all these years, to recreate myself is a blessing.”

AFTER MY FIRST PAINTING, HE SAID, ‘YOU’RE A PAINTER, AND YOU MUST PAINT EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE.

She’s grateful her parents and grandmother, who repeatedly asked the budding artist to draw, encouraged her. “Some people make strong imprints on your life that help catapult your career,” she says. “When I was in grade school, I won a silver dollar award, given to me by my principal in front of my classmates.” Having her artwork displayed in the hallway, Naylor remembers, “was such a good feeling that I thought, ‘If this makes people happy, I’m going to continue.’”

While her techniques have evolved from learning and exploring, Naylor has never diverted from her calling. “In kindergarten,” she relays, “they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I said, ‘An artist.’ The teacher then said, ‘What do you want to do as a career?’ I said, ‘I am an artist now, and I will be an artist when I’m old.’ I was then put in the corner for being confrontational. Go figure!”

She went on to win a New York Scholastic Key Award for her drawings and later earned her bachelor of fine arts degree from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. “In art college,” Naylor says, “I majored in drawing and minored in illustration, so I believe it’s very important to have good draftsmanship before moving on to anything in a creative field. I AM AN ARTIST NOW, AND I WILL BE AN ARTIST WHEN I’M OLD. Exploring new avenues has been rewarding for Naylor in multiple ways. E-commerce site Society6 provides a platform and fun outlet to place her artwork on clothing, coffee mugs, shower curtains, and other items that anyone can purchase. “I’m not too proud to put my work on objects!” she admits. Boyds & Phish, Naylor’s series of whimsical bird and fish sculptures designed as wall art, is something she similarly considers “just a fun project to do.” The collection has been featured on an episode of HGTV’s That’s Clever! When she applied to appear on a show, Naylor says, “I told them I was raised by small poodles that knew how to accessorize. It seemed to get their attention!”

rawing came naturally to Naylor, yet she admits, “I was always intimidated with painting, even in art school.” She “balked” when one of her art professors asked her to take a painting class. “He persisted, and I was glad he did. After my first painting, he said, ‘You’re a painter, and you must paint every day of your life.’”

Lighthearted and kindhearted, Naylor has captured the eyes of many serious galleries and collectors across the US and abroad by remaining true to herself. Looking ahead, she envisions “letting the Holy Spirit lead the way, so I don’t trip up!”

Naylor continues, “I used to do a lot of figurative work, and it was compelling for me as I was growing in my skill.” Aiming to “capture their essence in a drawing or painting,” she spent time talking with the models. Artist-model interactions, however, were uncommon, and she never understood why. “They were important for me, as the artist, to excel,” insists Naylor, who instinctively cares about her subjects. After bonding with a model who had AIDS, she even donated a portrait of him to the Art for AIDS fundraiser.

After a couple of years of doing life-size pastels in class, Naylor says, “The transition to acrylic was quick, as I could layer the colors easily. However, it wasn’t until years later that I tried oils and fell in love, as they are very forgiving. I don’t know why I had been so intimidated, but I was glad once I tried them.”

D

uring COVID-19’s early days, the home became our all for many of us. We barely ventured outside. The mechanics of our domestic lives were made apparent to everyone, everywhere. Day after day spent working at home, eating at home, dealing with the highs and lows of isolation, we were trying to figure out how to support all the inhabitants under one roof. From toddler to tottering grandparent, for those of us living solo to those packed together, we learned how to cope with loneliness and drudgery. We were forced to make our houses into wellness centers, not showcases. No one was visiting, anyway! We discovered the daily impact that design, style, and dining had on how we lived and thrived. We learned what wellness means: being free of physical ailments and sickness, living in harmony with others, and performing valuable and fulfilling work. Many faced the most challenging of human experiences—a terminal diagnosis—which for some was even exacerbated by being unable to say goodbye to loved ones. One thing became apparent to me through the pandemic: when you behave caringly (not carefully), you can cope with any situation. For the last two years, the challenge has been arranging our domestic spheres to help us behave caringly no matter the circumstance. We want to create spaces where the moment people enter them, they experience a deep feeling of care— knowing that all will be okay even in the worst of times. I brought back principles I learned in my childhood homes in Africa. I devoted myself to making spaces in my adult American life where wellness and being cared for were felt. It was priority number one. My childhood was often chaotic and tumultuous, so I wanted my

adult houses to be a sanctuary. My goal, no matter who entered, be they residents or visitors, was to give them a good feeling of care. In Africa, we dealt with coups and evacuated our homes; but there are challenges even in America. Each of us experiences times brimming with joy and happiness and others full of sorrow, down to the loneliest of moments. When the spirit in the house infuses us with what we need at that very moment, we have created something precious, important, and worthwhile. We feel cared for, at ease. The African houses fulfilled specific roles at different times. Our pink house on the hill overlooking Mogadishu, Somalia, turned into a hospital when my brother, sister, and I were delirious with typhoid. In Nigeria and other countries, our houses were a child’s delight: mini zoos where royal pythons, African gray parrots, turtles large enough to ride on, and billy goats lived with us. Cheetahs and monkeys were kept in houses next door. In Accra, Ghana, it was all about education. The wife of a diplomat homeschooled me. Many decades later, when two of my sons deployed to the war in Afghanistan, my house on Rainbow Row in Charleston, South Carolina, became a place for me to hide. In each instance, the house became my wellness center. During some years—the best years—our house turned into a party place filled with joy felt by many people, at least for a few hours. Now that people are beginning to invite others inside again, our wellness centers can make them feel cared for, but it starts with ourselves. We do this by letting our true spirits reign. Design is as vital to the health of a house as food and drink. People choose paintings for their walls, pieces of music that lift them during their day-to-day activities, or soft lighting and candlelight to change moods. V I E MAGAZ INE . COM | 123

H

ow you arrange your personal habitat is a window into who you truly are. Your passions, hobbies, and idiosyncrasies become apparent. The private you becomes known. Houses done by an interior designer and left exactly that way may have less of your spirit roaming around. People fall in love with individuals, not a perfectly “done” look that is so in style now. People fall in love with quirky individualism and personal expression. When you are reflected in your house, it’s the beginning of finding wellness through the freedom of expressing your authentic self. Florence Knoll, the founder and designer of Knoll furniture, painted all her walls white, but a different hue of it every year. She commissioned paint experts Donald Kaufman and Taffy Dahl to choose which white. The subtle change made everything look slightly different and kept her eyes and senses attuned to her surroundings.

When color and objects remain unchanged, domestic dwellers stop seeing them. Moving things around and editing spaces shifts the energy and charges the vibrancy in a house. Every abode needs this. (Houses have needs just like us, and it’s more than just standard maintenance.) I have lived in several eighteenthcentury homes. They are living, breathing machines that crave care, love, and attention just like we do. Houses can help us when we nurture them. That is when your dwelling becomes a wellness center. Homes are also places for playfulness. Even if your house cannot become a mini zoo, you can do things to create fun, calm, and memories. You can read out loud for an old-fashioned pleasure. After dinner in Africa, my father read us Sherlock 124 | M A R CH 2 0 2 2

Holmes stories, bringing in a world from another continent when our lives became difficult. Arrange a dedicated table for games. Chess is perfect for taking a break from what is going on because it demands focus. When more of a breather is needed, try jigsaw puzzles, making handloom potholders, knitting, or playing cards. These tasks allow us to talk and do simultaneously, fostering community without too much pressure, all in the privacy of the home. I look forward to the future when once again (or maybe the first for some of us) we use our houses to build connections and spread joy by hosting parties. I loved when my houses buzzed with community. Friendships formed every minute through gatherings, small dinners, or enormous events for hundreds with a band, buffet, and midnight breakfast. Let’s bring back those good old days!

While generating thoughtful interaction, each attendee also ends up with their very own work of art to take home. Providing a much larger “canvas” are South Walton’s many golf courses, which include layouts designed by Tom Fazio, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., and Tom Jackson. Time spent playing amid these stunning backdrops has a way of bringing folks a little closer together. Those who want to make golf a focal point of their team’s visit might consider the scenic Burnt Pine Golf Club at Sandestin. The back nine highlights breathtaking views along the Choctawhatchee Bay, while the front side brings golfers through pine forests and wetlands. When it’s time to unwind, groups can always turn to wine. With two South Walton locations—WaterColor and Miramar Beach—The Wine Bar has a refined ambience without any air of pretension. Interactive events include festive tastings and pairings of wines with gourmet cuisine from great local chefs. Another beautiful spot is the Chautauqua Vineyards & Winery in DeFuniak Springs. Most of the working vineyard is located off-site, but about ten “preview rows” offer a showcase on the front lawn. During harvest season, visitors can even pick fresh grapes to get a taste of the

origin of their distinctive wines. The winery offers complimentary tastings and a very popular Old Vine Wine Club. Those not in a rush to head home can always catch a flight. A flight of the area’s incredible craft brews, to be specific. Stopping by Idyll Hounds Brewing Company, they can chat with the brewers and sample flavorful beers suited to any taste. Or they can pay a visit to the 30,000-square-foot Grayton Beer Company production facility. This amazing taproom welcomes guests to play darts, take a tour, or listen to a little live music. After all the activities of the day, there may be no better way to promote team bonding than a beach bonfire. It’s the perfect blend of relaxing and reflecting. Teams can snack on s’mores while brainstorming some big ideas under the Big Dipper. Several local outfitters, including 30A Blaze, will handle all the permits, set-up, and take-down. Each group is one of a kind, just like each day in South Walton. The selected activities may not always seem perfect for every member, but that’s half the fun— pushing the boundaries a little and getting the team to try things they don’t normally do. It’s what ultimately creates an indelible experience that leaves each visitor feeling a little more fulfilled than when they arrived.

R U N WAYS O F T H E WO R L D – FA L L / W I N T E R 2 0 2 2 Paris Haute Couture shows started the year off boldly with daring styles that conveyed renewed energy as fashion brands strive to lift consumers from the slump of the pandemic. New York Fashion Week continued the trend, with designers showing bright neon colors, eccentric patterns, and daring silhouettes for Fall/Winter 2022. Christian Siriano dazzled with royal blues and blacks, while Alice + Olivia brought edgy chicness. The slightly zany expressiveness in many collections seemed to surpass past fashion weeks, indicating that the pendulum of style has swung in a new direction, hopefully leaving sweatpants behind for a while.

Inspired by the escapism witnessed as trips to space become more frequent and science fiction themes merge with reality, the Schiaparelli Spring 2022 collection shown in Paris presented daringly unconventional designs in this post-pandemic landscape. Designer Daniel Roseberry purposefully refined the theatrical looks to tell a story no one had seen before. A standout was this Medusa headdress constructed from handmolded leather and adorned with ornaments covered in gold lead, embroidered with cabochons, vintage jewels, rhinestones, and anatomical resin elements. We can’t wait to see how fashion evolves as more designers follow in the mystical direction Schiaparelli has embraced in these changing times.
