The Panthers at Pines Lakes Elementary are proud to announce a new partnership with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club. The club members reached out with the goal of conducting a Book Giveaway to every student prior to school breaks. Since becoming partners, they have provided close to 2,000 books to the students. The students get very excited when their class comes through the Book Giveaway to select the book of their choosing. Mrs. Creviston, Literacy Coach at Pines Lakes said, “We are so grateful for our friendship with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club! The squeals of excitement and shining smiles when the students get to choose a book bring us so much joy! In the days following the giveaways, the students are ecstatic to share updates on their books and we have such rich conversations. Thank you to our new friends!”

Providing students with high quality reading material helps us support our families and increases student literacy. Research shows that starting at birth, children who read just one book a day hear about 290,000 more words by the time they enter kindergarten than students who don’t read. Reading with children helps them pick up the skill of reading quickly and easily. As SAC Chair and Academic Coach, Mrs. Dejean said “We are so happy to have this partnership with the Miramar-Pines Rotary Club to help instill the love of reading in all children, especially those who don’t have the opportunity to get new books. This is also a great help to our English Language Arts School Improvement Goal our school is working towards this year.

We are grateful to the Rotary Club Members for this generous donation & know our families will enjoy reading their books together!

The partnership doesn’t end with free books – the Student Council members at Pines Lakes have returned the favor by helping the Rotary Club with their Shoe Drive. Students and staff donate used shoes which are then sold to a nonprofit organization that repairs them and sends them to people around the world in need of shoes. The money raised is then donated by the Rotary to sponsor their Pack a Sack project, which feeds needy kids in our community.

Through this partnership, the students at Pines Lakes continue to learn and show how they take care of others. Perhaps one day these same students will provide community service as adults by advancing goodwill and peace through fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders such as the Rotary Club. Visit our school or call for a tour. 10300 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines 33026. (754) 323-7100.

Withtoday’s busy schedule and focusing on school, it’s always hard for students to have a chance to lend a helping hand. The Student Council of Pines Charter East Elementary Campus was allowed to assist in helping cleanup our school’s garden with the help of Mrs. Burrell, Mrs.Dizengoff and Mrs. Nelquy on February 14th, 2023. Since it was the Day of Service the students went above and beyond in raking leaves, cleaning the flower beds and planting new flowers alongside myself (Mrs.Quiroz) and Mrs. Nelquy. It was definitely a new experience for some students that have never tended to a garden before. They took this challenge with tremendous determination and the understanding to help others. Our treasurer, Ariana Rodriguez felt that the garden was a fun experience for her, and she was super happy to help out. She also felt that with more people helping we can grow even more.

As Melanie Palacio, our student council’s Vice President stated, “Alone we can do so little but together we can do so much”. If you are interested in visiting our school, please call (954) 443-4800 or visit us at 10801 Pembroke Road, Pembroke Pines 33025.

Lakeside Elementary is a family-oriented school that promotes inclusion for all students in all areas of the school. Part of our approach to inclusion is to display a sense of collaboration, engagement, and respect for all students and staff. In March, our five-autism spectrum disorder (ASD) classes participated in the Special Olympics at Flanagan High School. Students participated in an array of events with peers of their own ages from a variety of schools attending. As our first year participating in this event, it was a culmination of working on skills such as catching, throwing, running bases, and encouraging teamwork in each other. Flanagan High School cheerleaders and baseball players were there to motivate, assist, and pump our students up as they moved through stations and felt a sense of accomplishment at their athletic successes. Our staff including our Principal, Mr. Rodriguez, our ASD Coach, Mrs. Freesland, all the teachers and teacher assistants, and some Lakeside ‘Alumni’ were eager spectators praising effort and giving support to our enthusiastic students. “This event was so well organized. It was wonderful to see the high school athletics students and staff working with our elementary students to learn and have fun. It was a great day for all involved,” said Mrs. Freesland.

In addition to fostering athleticism, staff and students at Lakeside Elementary are focused on enhancing and furthering our academic progress. This year, students have been singularly focused on achieving Math Fluency through the implementation of our Reflex Math program and the motivation strategies spearheaded by Ms. Archer, our Assistant Principal. With the support of our exceptional Parent Teacher Association (PTA), led by Mrs. Chavez, the students were rewarded with a ‘Fluency Party’ to celebrate their successes. Students in grades 1 – 5 who displayed 100% fluency by the party date were invited by special green tickets to attend a dance party complete with popcorn, cotton candy, games, and their favorite dance tunes. The PTA, Lakeside staff, and students danced and celebrated the academic success and effort by our students. PTA Secretary, Mrs. Lopez, stated, “We love to give back to the students for their effort and accomplishments. It was great to see the smiling faces on students who have worked so hard on their math skills.”

We are all very proud of our students and staff for all they do. Stop by for a visit or call for a tour. 900 NW 136th Avenue, Pembroke Pines. (754) 323-6440.

The Student Government at Pembroke Pines Elementary conducted a Teddy Bear drive to collect Teddy Bears for Taylor’s Teddy Bears. Taylor’s Teddy Bears is a nonprofit organization that collects stuffed bears for first responders to give to children. The organization honors the memory of Taylor Bishop who was killed when a plane crashed into the car his mother was driving. For one week, students at Pembroke Pines Elementary brought in stuffed animals. On February 14th as a part of our Day of Service and Love activities, students from each grade level delivered the bears to our Student Government members who in turn delivered them to the Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department on February 24th. Over

140 bears were collected and Meghan Bishop, Taylor’s mom and the founder of the organization was on hand to witness the event. We plan to make this an annual event at Pembroke Pines Elementary so that we can continue to honor the memory of Taylor.

Pembroke Pines Elementary is committed to providing a quality education to all students and ensuring that they have the skills necessary for the next step in their educational careers. We always welcome volunteers to our school. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the school at (754) 323-7000 or visits us at 6700 SW 9th Street, Pembroke Pines 33023.
