Editor’s Letter
In January this year, I thought “this is it”. So I started talking to party vendors from around the globe about the concept and to see if they wanted to jump on board. Nine months later, here we are... 23 never before seen parties all themed around a US location, and 200 vendors from Australia, UK and the USA all in one 190 page, amazing online and print magazine. All I can say about this magazine is WOW! Every submission that came in just blew me away. Each team took their US location and translated it into a unique event idea, theme and set-up. No two are the same, and each and every one filled with much inspiration and party goodness, for industry vendors and party lovers alike. Every team that participated in this magazine simply created magic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person who worked on United States of Party, whether a vendor in a shoot or in the production of the magazine. Without you this concept of mine would not have come true and we would not have been able to provide our readers this amazing source of beauty and inspiration. Thank you so much for all your time and efforts, I know how great these were! To our readers, all I can say is take some time to work through this magazine. As you read United States of Party take in every location, theme, colour and the details as there are so many! And you wont want to miss a single one. I
absolutely love the United States of America. It’s fab, fun and never fails to disappoint with food, trends, fashion, monuments and pop culture. About two years ago, I was sitting at my desk in my corporate job, telling my work BFF about my idea to create a party inspo mag with a bunch of styled shoots themed for every state in America. It was pretty crazy, so I believed it would simply remain as an idea.

What inspired you to choose Alaska? Alaska and Brisbane are worlds apart in both climate and landscape, so we were very excited to find the pop-up igloo bars that Customs House sets up during the winter months along the Brisbane River.

What was the inspiration for the theme and styling? I was inspired by Alaska’s igloo hotels with clear curved windows, and the trend of remote destination weddings. We also wanted to create a bridal shower celebration that could be transported, set up and styled anywhere in the world. Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? This destination bridal shower only uses items that could be packed in a suitcase for a destination event. All the partyware and decorations are DIY, from the air-inflated balloon garland to the bonbon favours. Easy to put together, these items can be taken with you to any destination so you can fully plan and style the event before you leave and easily set up when you arrive!

What inspired you to choose Arizona? The desert mural wall in the laneway of Feld & Co captured my attention about 12 months ago. The minute I saw it I knew I had to use it one day.

What influenced the theme and styling? The desert landscape of Arizona, which matched the mural so well! I also brought in watercolour elements as they are often used to expose the effects of light and the colour of shadows in a landscape.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? I included blush and emerald tones as these are quickly becoming a popular customer choice in our store. What is your favourite thing about the USA? Where do I start? I love the USA so much! When I think of the United States, I think enthusiasm. It’s like one big party. I would have to say my absolute favourite though is Disneyland!

What inspired you to choose California? California is a fun state that has many talented and inspirational people within the creative arts industry. We had fun mixing aesthetics from such a diverse place.

What was the inspiration for the theme and styling? This party is an explosion of Katy Perry versus Michelle Rogers (both CA gals). Candyfornia is a fun, vibrant candyland, with an infusion of gorgeous matte pastels, streamer installations and cute florals that are so familiar in the work of styling babe, Michelle Rogers.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? We incorporated all the things! This included the colour tones, the ceiling streamer installation, an abundance of balloons, layered acrylics and custom fringe piùata installations. The shag cake was another up and coming trend we included. What is your favourite thing about the USA? I haven’t been to the USA yet (gasp), so this was a bit of a challenge for me. I do intend on visiting many states in the USA though, and I think California would be a great place to start.

What inspired you to choose Chicago? My love for jazz and romance made Chicago the perfect fit for this genre!

What influenced the theme and styling? Proposal set-ups are quite trendy at the moment. I was inspired to use this set-up and incorporate Chicago's jazz vibes that captivate this city. Bringing Chicago to Sydney; the colours were inspired by the interior of a typical jazz bar being black, red and gold. The cake depicted the city skyline and was a perfect way for the newly engaged couple to celebrate with immediate family. Overall, we wanted to achieve a captivating, classy and unique set-up just like the city itself.
Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? We used a live dual-band for this proposal as it's a current wedding trend. Other elements were neon lights, floral installations on modern props and custom-made cookies - all trends of 2019.
What is your favourite thing about the USA? Bagels, burgers and ice-cream! It is such a diverse culture, and there is so much to explore within each city.

The Rocky Mountain National Forest is the perfect inspiration for any camp-out party. Throw in some delicious cake, cupcakes and teepees, and great outdoors here we come.

What inspired you to choose Colorado? We were inspired by the outdoors of Colorado. Colorado is ranked as one of the best states in America for camping. We chose a camp-themed party, and we wanted to incorporate the natural elements of our surroundings and create a space that evoked a real campsite.

What influenced the theme and styling? We wanted to use lots of earthy colours, but also decided to add a modern twist to our set-up by incorporating the black and white stripes to mimic camping tents. Of course, it was only fitting to also tie in buffalo check patterns throughout the installation to give it a cosy camping feel. We added small pockets of bright colours – yellow and red on the cupcakes and cake that depicted campfire flames.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Party planners have started creating play areas for children in their party set-ups. These areas are fantastic because they add an extra element to the party set-up and they encourage play. The tents not only add to the overall theme of the party but also act as an area for children to run wild with their imagination during the party. Candy stations are popular, and they are still trending! However, we decided to create a trail mix station with a variety of snacks for the little ones and the parents. The trail mix station was fitting for the camp theme and we wanted to offer a variety of snacks for the little ones. What is your favourite thing about the USA? The diversity of people and melting pot of cultures.

When you can’t get to Disneyland, just bring it to you! This mini Disneyland with all the favourites is definitely the happiest place to be!

What inspired you to choose Disneyland? We wanted to recreate a mini Disneyland experience. We also wanted to find a venue with a blank canvas, which could be booked for children’s parties and show readers the possibilities of how a Disneyland inspired party could be recreated at the venue. What influenced the theme and styling? Children love all the wonder and magic of Disney, so we were inspired by the happiest place on earth to create this party. We wanted to capture some of the most magical moments at Disneyland. This included singing and dancing in Main Street, playtime in Adventure Land, Mad Tea Party in Wonderland, Storytime at the Royal Hall and a Fairy-tale spa. One of the most exciting experiences at Disneyland is the interaction that children have with their favourite characters, so the themed lands were designed so the children could meet and share a magical moment with their favourite characters.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? A current trend in children’s parties is the designated interactive play area. We created an interactive play area in Adventure Land with play equipment form Perth Toy Hire, which we named after Disney Rides and attractions and this area was hosted by the Cowboy and Cowgirl to keep the children entertained. In Wonderland, we created the Mad Tea party where guests got to enjoy custom mini personalised treats of doughnuts, tarts and cakes. We also had custom Disneyland inspired autograph books and passports. The children could give these books to their favourite characters to write a message on, and receive a stamp at each land they visited.

What is your favourite thing about the USA? It’s bright, bold and colourful with a diversity of culture and history. It’s full of different experiences, from LA Street Food Fest (food truck festivals), Mardi Gras in New Orleans, mountains in Montana, shopping in New York or the gorgeous towns that are straight from Hallmark movies. It’s great how they bring to life holidays like the 4th of July, Halloween and Christmas. The themes, the lights, the props, the Christmas trees, parades, the homes, shopfront windows and the food.

A chic and elegant Hamptons inspired bridal shower, channelling the cool yet luxe elegance synonymous with this famous location.

What inspired you to choose The Hamptons? Hamptons style has become very popular in the interior design world. The classic coastal elegance and calming colour palette fit in perfectly with Australia’s coastline and relaxed living. I wanted to try and meld the two together. I’ve always loved the Hamptons look because it is luxurious and yet relaxed (I think the parties on Sex and the City was my first introduction)! The white cladding, subtle and cool colours are timeless and instantly makes me feel like I’m on a summer holiday.

What influenced the theme and styling? The movie, ‘Something’s Gotta Give’, the house in that movie is my dream home (at a cool $41 million)! The colour palette is clean and fresh but still ‘homely’. The gorgeous white French doors and windows are my absolute favourite, so when I discovered the venue, ‘The Sunset Terrace’ at Scarborough beach, with floor to ceiling windows and amazing panoramic ocean views, I knew I could combine ‘Hamptons’ style with the beautiful Perth coastline. I wanted it to be stylish, yet still welcoming and warm. The combination of natural textures and the traditional Hamptons colouring was a perfect mix.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Balloon garlands are a favourite of mine and are still a popular trend. Favor Lane Party Boutique provided top-quality balloons and these framed both the bar and the arbour. Tying in interior styling, and furniture into events and party styling is another current trend that I love! The furniture from Maisey Collections and Little Pallet Co. matched perfectly, tying in with the white wood paneling and natural timber, along with the wire chairs and stools. The beautiful pale blue couch accentuated the coastal colour palette. Another was rose gold. The rose gold acrylic doughnut wall from XOXO Design highlighted the doughnuts from Cakes 2 Celebrate by Lisa and added a hint of metallic, as did the gorgeous rose gold tableware from Side Serve Perth. The magnum bottles of Rosé from Liquor Barons Duncraig matched perfectly with the rose gold and the ‘Rosé the day away’ signage.

What is your favourite thing about the USA? I think the USA has a fantastic variety of landscapes and landmarks. There are so many beautiful regions that have their fair share of natural beauty added to the man-made constructions, like Montana, Florida, Hawaii, Colorado, California, Arizona and New York, to name just a few. They each have their own personality and a different feel about them but in my travels, I’ve found the people usually so welcoming and friendly too.

What inspired you to choose Hawaii? I wanted to do something on the beach. I was able to find this amazing restaurant called Zimzala in Cronulla (in Sydney), right on the beach. They saw my vision and wanted to be a part of this beautiful set-up. The blue water, the sandy beach and the shining sun all had to be part of the shoot.

What influenced the theme and styling? My inspiration was summer. I love sand, water and sun. When I saw that Hawaii was one of the themes to pick from, I just had to do it. I’ve always wanted to do some styling along the beach or close to it, so this was my opportunity. I also wanted to style a wedding incorporating green and gold, and this really suited the Hawaiian theme. Green was representing the beautiful rainforest and gold representing the sun.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? The biggest trend was the use of gold, which is a current trend and goes well with any other colour. The green and gold worked very nicely together on the beach with the sun, sand and water. What is your favourite thing about the USA? I love the Hawaiian Islands. In fact, I just got back!

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? We used them where we could. We tried to keep everything eco-friendly, so we used coconut bowls and Meri Meri’s new biodegradable plates! Not necessarily a trend, but I think we are becoming more conscious of using eco-friendly items. The balloons were also ecofriendly and the flowers all British (Fable & Moon are based in the UK) and homegrown! What is your favourite thing about the USA? The USA is such an eclectic mix of cultures! I also love its sense of fun and “go big or go home” attitude when it comes to life! The food is pretty awesome too!

What inspired you to choose Las Vegas? We were inspired by the notion of a Vegas wedding! The idea behind the shoot was to showcase different elements of a Vegas celebration.

What influenced the theme and styling? We wanted it to be a sophisticated affair, we loved the thought of old Vegas think glitz and glam but with a modern twist. The idea was to showcase black and red throughout the styling representing the colours of a deck of cards. We decided to feature the classic red rose, touches of crystal but with modern elements like black plates for the table setting. A Vegas wedding should be a fun, laid back yet sophisticated affair so we wanted to showcase our couple trying their luck at a table game and having fun in general whilst highlighting the different elements of their day. The elements we chose to highlight were the mirrored welcome sign which is seen at the entrance to the venue, the mesh backdrop with neon sign which we used as a backdrop to their vows and also as a backdrop to a photo booth, the signing table, the acrylic wishing well, the table setting with two different centrepieces and last but not least the cake and cake table.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? We incorporated two current trends, firstly the neon sign which everyone is using for their events at the moment and also with the tablescapes we incorporated vintage crystal with the modern black plates which we are seeing more and more for weddings and engagements.
What is your favourite thing about the USA? Our favourite thing about the USA is that it’s so diverse! Because of its size each state or even city has its own culture and way of life which is fascinating. Having travelled a fair bit in the US it was amazing to see how different each place is and immerse ourselves in the culture and their way of life. Vegas is up there as one of our favourite places in the US. There are so many things to do and see there, it is truly an awesome experience.

What inspired you to choose Los Angeles? I chose Los Angeles as I love the glitz and glam of celebrities. LA is known for being the capital of celebrities and celebrity sightings. I’m intrigued by their luxurious lifestyles, so I immediately thought of Rodeo Drive. Arguably the most famous street in the world, Rodeo Drive is one of the most fashionable places to shop and be seen. It oozes luxury, wealth and class, so I wanted to incorporate that into my shoot.

What influenced the theme and styling? My inspiration for this soirée was to create a Rodeo Drive themed Sweet Sixteen that a selfconfessed designer brand loving girl would dream of celebrating! I wanted my set-up to include mini shopfronts as part of one main display, but instead of luxury bags and shoes, I wanted to showcase delectable desserts themed to each brand. I chose Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co. For Chanel, I wanted to capture the iconic symbol and classy black and white colours with a touch of pink to keep it feminine. Louis Vuitton are famous around the world for their designer bags and LV initials so I chose white, gold and brown to tie in with the brand’s theme. Tiffany & Co are famous for their expensive jewellery and the Tiffany Blue colour is very distinct. I wanted to capture a Breakfast at Tiffany’s feel, with the birthday girl and her guests dining amongst the luxury of Rodeo Drive.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Sweet Sixteen birthday parties are definitely coming back in trend, long gone is the home backyard party of the ‘80s and ‘90s. Sweet Sixteen parties disappeared for a good decade or so. Now it’s a celebration worthy of a wedding, with amazing styling, large guest list, top DJ, fabulous venue and amazing food. I also incorporated lifesize floral numbers that are so on-trend right now. They are a great backdrop to take photos with family and friends to capture lovely memories.

What inspired you to choose Malibu? The three co-founders of 3RD & LUXE all grew up 15 minutes inland of Malibu. We all hold this city near and dear to our hearts; we have so many special memories including afternoons of ditching high school to hit the beach, family dinners at restaurants overlooking the beach, babies first toes in the water, Grandma’s final trip to the beach, and many more. We adore this coastal city and loved being able to honour all the joy it brings to so many people!

What influenced the theme and styling? This shoot was inspired by the forever summer feeling of this SoCal city and the glamorous Malibu “It Girls” that occupy it. Our vibes were hip, fun, beautiful, yet effortlessly understated. While we wanted the beachy boho feel, we didn’t want to forget the fun factor, because Malibu is all about fun. So we had included balloons, tassels, a teepee, and the most adorable custom cake topper by Kiki Sprinkles of the famous Malibu sign!

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? The food and drinks were inspired by famous restaurant dishes people from around the world seek out while vacationing in Malibu. The menu included Mini Breakfast Burritos inspired by the legendary Lily’s breakfast burritos, and Mini Clam Chowder Bread Bowls inspired by Neptune’s Net famous chowder. For the adorable little bread bowls, 805 Catering hollowed out sourdough dinner rolls! Next was fresh Hummus and Tzatzikii with Grilled Pita Bread, inspired by the incredible starters at Taverna Tony in the trendy Malibu County Mart. Candy sushi was also served, because you can’t talk about Malibu restaurants without paying a little homage to Nobu! For drinks, there were Piña Coladas in pineapple ‘glasses’ inspired by the cocktails served at Paradise Cove where you can legally drink on the beach! Dessert was Malibu Rum Soaked Vanilla Bean Cake with Coconut Frosting because this famous coconut rum isn’t just for tropical cocktails. What is your favourite thing about the USA? Our favourite thing is the various authentic foods we have access to; because America is the quintessential “melting pot” we can drive to Chinatown for authentic Asian noodles, fly to NYC for Italian pizza, and chow down on killer street tacos just about anywhere in Southern California. Where else in the world do you literally get a taste of everything?

What inspired you to choose Miami? Miami was most suited for the direction we wanted to take. The whole scene was inspired by an amazing Japanese artist called Yoko Honda, who creates fantastical dreamscape scenes featuring 80s aesthetics and ‘Miami-esque’ cities. The art genre is called ‘Vaporwave’. Miami Vice also came to mind when planning. What influenced the theme and styling? The 80’s and Yoko Honda’s art was a big part of the styling. From this, we included a lot of the era’s defining elements such as bold colours, Memphis inspired-patterns and retro fonts. Also, the set-up is meant to represent a hen’s night set at a rooftop Miami bar, hence the arrangement.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? In terms of trends, we included the streamer wall and neon sign which look so good together. We’ve been wanting to try it for a while. In terms of DIY, my favorite was the retro VHS cassette tape favours we made. We also made coasters by printing the pattern on thick card and cutting them into circles.
What is your favourite thing about the USA? Everything! The shopping, the culture, the food and even the party talent. In fact, it is probably one of our favourite holiday destinations of all time!

What inspired you to choose New Orleans? There were so many great locations to choose from, and we had so many ideas for so many of the possible themes that we could have used. I think we chose New Orleans as we haven’t seen any modern Mardi Gras themes lately and we really wanted to breathe some life back into it. We wanted to do something a bit different, and maybe even turn a theme on its head. How can anyone not love beads, feathers, and masks at a party?

What influenced the theme and styling?
We wanted to keep it moody and mysterious with the use of masks and feathers as opposed to the bright colours and open styling associated with the theme. The idea to go for a kind of ‘secret supper’ vibe came from Kim (Sassy Snaps team member), with the party set up in the woods using lots of moss and greenery, and the bright pops of purple and gold to keep it modern. At first, we had an idea for a kids theme, but since Mardi Gras is also associated with LGBT love, we decided an engagement styled shoot was a better idea.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Acrylic signage, which Foote and Flame did a fantastic job on for this shoot. This included the floating cake topper, drink stirrers and menus. They also came up with the hexagonshaped design which helped to modernise the signage. Verlena Cakes wowed with the wafer paper feathers in emerald, purple and gold with subtle eye features which matched the masks. Lots of subtle textures were used on the cake too–a trend in the wedding cake industry now. We are still seeing the ‘boho’ style floor set-ups with rugs and cushions so we chose this style, instead of the traditional seating set-up used for most engagement parties. Everyone also loves personalisation these days, so we were excited to work with Paper the Ninth to create custom personalised glassware, bridesmaid boxes and decals.

What inspired you to choose New York? It was easy to choose this state – because of its city. New York City is iconic and known for its concrete jungle and green heart. With such an ironic and yet poetic combination it’s no surprise why this city is featured in so many famous movies and TV shows. Its buzzing streets boast a harmony between old world art-deco buildings and modern age skyscrapers– a designer’s dream. We truly believed that it allowed endless options for styling due to the city’s colourful history and landscape. With so many amazing angles to interpret this fantastic city, we wanted to create a whimsical and playful take on NYC.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? We incorporated the current trends of streamer backdrops, clear Orbz balloons and neon lights. What is your favourite thing about the USA? How everything is much bigger and exaggerated. From food to lifestyles, we have all grown up watching American movies and have this idealism of the culture they have. Another of my favourite things is the way they celebrate holidays such as Christmas and Halloween. The effort everyone goes to celebrate is a show of the type of culture they have.

What influenced the theme and styling? The bright and stark yellow New York City cabs that stick out like a sore thumb against the grey city. Trying our best not to be too literal with the state we chose, the idea was to portray a whimsical and playful interpretation of the city – catered to a child’s birthday party. We knew that we needed to pay homage to some of the icons of New York so we subtly infused them into the design.

What inspired you to choose Palm Springs? Palm Springs is one of our favourite places in the USA so the choice was natural. What’s not to love about an oasis-like city that’s also home to seriously good design?

What influenced the theme and styling? Our party was inspired by the mid-century design aesthetic of Palm Springs and the amazing colours of the surrounding desert. Breezeblocks are a common feature of many buildings in the city so the shapes of these blocks were the inspiration for our decorative back wall, cookies, cake topper and swizzle sticks. The desert colours were carried through all aspects of the celebration from the props and stationery to the sweets, balloons and other decorations.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Dried and coloured palms are a popular element in floristry at the moment so our shoot incorporated lots of them, as well as palmshaped ferns to create a mini tabletop oasis. You can’t have a Palm Springs-themed party without a few palms! What is your favourite thing about the USA? The US is such a huge and varied country that you can have an entirely different experience every time you visit.

What inspired you to choose Salem? The party is a gathering of the witches of Salem and their guests to feast on everything gross. I wanted to ensure that it was as close to the horror genre as possible and deliberately avoided a ‘fun’ Halloween. No Casper or Halloween pumpkins in this shoot! I wanted the stuff you would see in horror movies. I had a vision but the next challenge was making it a reality. I’m quite fortunate that I have a few industry friends and called my good friend Mary Ronis to help style the set. My conversation went something like “Mary, I have an idea for a shoot.” She was overseas at the time and wanted in before I could finish the sentence. My other friend Natalie from NPM had everything I needed so it worked out well.

What influenced the theme and styling? I have always been a fan of horror and for years have wanted to do something like this. The opportunity came up this year, I held on and made sure I didn’t let go until it happened. It is also a good excuse to let your creativity go wild. The number of vendors that wanted to be involved really shocked me. Everyone wanted to let their darker side come out to play. What is your favourite thing about the USA?
They really love a celebration, whether it’s tossing pumpkins in Oregon or a Zombie walk in New York City – nothing is off limits. No matter how crazy the concept, there’s enough people over there to make it a reality.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? I’m not really a follower of trends, I am more interested in looking at a different way of doing things. There were plenty of hands-on projects though. The painting of the silhouette was hand-painted by Jo from Jo’s Signs by Design. Those cakes, wow! Kathy from Fancy Events and Parties nailed the heart stitch cake as well as the brain cake and those cupcakes, so gross and awesome at the same time! Cassandra from Mama Tuck’s also brought in a pannacotta heart and brain cheesecake. Anne Marie Molloy Cookies made the eyeballs and finger cookies. Mary Ronis made the webbing and with the help of Mel at NPM Events, transformed the space into something surreal.

What inspired you to choose San Diego for this party? I was inspired to choose San Diego as a location as it offered an interesting intersection between the vibrant colour and patterns of Mexico with the sophisticated coastal cool of California. I also loved the botanical diversity of the landscape where the desert meets the sea. San Diego has a really fresh vibe, rich with layers and influences that it has developed from these cross-cultural roots which for me as a creative is very inspiring.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? Botanicals look amazing in parties. Also, using a service like Pop up Gardens provides a stunning and interesting backdrop that is environmentally sustainable. Flowers can instantly transform a table into a celebration-worthy event. Light, fresh flavours are becoming more popular in cakes and (Cakes by Bre Parsons) designed her vanilla and berry cake with this vibrancy in mind. The custom Azul Denim jacket is a stylish way to identify a bride-to-be in a party group and allows her to feel special and honoured amongst her friends instead of being embarrassed. The denim look also perfectly suited the California setting. The placecards featured hand-calligraphed names, wrapped around the stems of handpainted watercolour flowers. The designs are of a San Diego Sunflower and a Coulter’s Matilija Poppy - both native flowers of the San Diego area. The menu design also featured other local native plants including the Beach Suncup, Steam Orchid, Coast Prickly Pear and California Fan Palm. Taking inspiration directly from a geographical place is a nice way to add significance to an event and helps tell the story of that celebration.

What influenced the theme and styling? I was inspired by the encaustic tile patterns found throughout the architecture of San Diego, both historically and also in more contemporary interiors. The traditional geometric patterns have evolved over time, whilst still maintaining the essence of their character. I love how they are being used in cafĂŠs, bars and private residences today, as an intricate geometric base from which pops of vibrant colour and beautiful lush green botanicals are paired against. The famous botanic gardens of Balboa Park were also a key inspiration that I wanted to enrich the set-up with. The beautiful beaches and coastal landscapes also influenced my decisions in designing this look.

What is your favourite thing about the USA? I think there is something to admire about the confidence found in American culture — a daring ability to forge towards an idea and make it happen. Reading about the history of Balboa Park (in San Diego), the city founders in 1868 had this vision for the future of their city and set aside the land for the park. A decision which today has resulted in a cultural oasis of 1,200 acres filled with fantastic gardens and museums that is something precious and special that defines the city.

What inspired you to choose Seattle? We wanted to take couples on a journey to places no one had ever been before. We based our elopement on Sleepless in Seattle: The Untold Story. It’s an intimate ceremony for the adventurous spirit! An adventurous couple, who have travelled the rugged seas, combed the deserted beaches and rocky coastline, collecting treasures along the way, and have fallen in love over and over.

What influenced the theme and styling? The Pop Up Elopements team were inspired by the natural and raw elements of the ocean and coastline, with a nod to the new world, old rock, and pirates of the sea. We wanted to showcase a romantic and intimate elopement, consciously sourcing and re-purposing every item for the couple’s wedding day. Amanda from A Celebration Day crafted a natural, non-scripted ceremony, allowing the couple to share their intimate and very personal love letters. The inspiration behind the florals, were as if they had been ‘picked from the rugged coastline’ by the very talented Yolande of Floral Fix. Cassie, from Bedford Photography, used her raw natural style to capture the fun, spontaneous and romantic moments during the shoot, “the winter light was soft and romantic – it was just perfect to capture those special moments”, she said.

Our stylist Lisa, from Hazelhurst Café Weddings handmade many elements for the shoot, including the bunting from old sail material, customised slippers and repurposed an op shop dress. “Many of the items used in the shoot were op-shop finds, items from grandparents’ sheds, borrowed and foraged. Doing our best to be sustainable along the way” she said.

What inspired you to choose Texas? They say everything’s bigger in Texas! Nothing sums up the USA like going big and all out, but Texas appealed to me for its wide range of influences and natural beauty. From the typical Dallas Lone-star Cowboy culture to the Mexican-inspired ‘Tex-Mex’ culture of El Paso, there isn’t just one thing that can sum up a state like Texas, so naturally, it drew some serious creative vibes! The South has been very influential for me lately in terms of country and homestead inspired design, too.

What was the inspiration for the theme and styling? Texas is such a big state with wide-open spaces - like Australia’s outback. I envisioned a single bride with her cowgirl hat and boots on, who’s just rode out of town on her horse and with her girls in tow. She’s more content in a wide-open field or farm. She’s a bride who doesn’t care what others think and loves doing it her way, on her terms – a modern boho Texas bride! The colours, setting and scheme reflected that attitude as well as the famous Texan pride in their state.

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? This shoot is about vintage boho. Many of the props and the setting used reflected that trend. Pretty and hippy bohemian macramé and lace are at home against rusted wrought iron and wooden fencing with vivid greenery and florals. We’re also seeing a move towards smaller ceremonies with creative personal touches, which result in understated yet beautiful set-ups. What is your favourite thing about the USA? I have a special connection with the USA, having spent some time living there as a child; plus, I have American family members living here in Sydney so I’m never too far away! From my experience, I would have to say the holidays were my favourite thing. The way Americans celebrate Halloween, 4th of July and Thanksgiving (not to mention Christmas and New Year’s) is like nothing else around the world - so much commitment and spirit - and so much fun!

What inspired you to choose Wisconsin? We chose this state as we wanted to do something different, not a typical one that most would choose. It offered much inspiration to create a fun kid’s party highlighting fun facts of Wisconsin that many might not know (admittedly we did not know either). What was the inspiration for the theme and styling? The main theme of the shoot was Barbie. Did you know, the first Barbie was Barbara Millicent Roberts from Willows, Wisconsin? This fun fact inspired the development of a Barbie focused kid’s party. We also wanted to incorporate some state symbols into the design. The first was milk. Wisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland and milk featured on the table setting, (the cake also featured cow print). Next was ice cream sundae. The first ice cream sundae was concocted in Wisconsin! We incorporated this into the design of the cake with images of sundaes and the overall colour theme of pastels. Thirdly, were the plastic flamingos. In 2009 the plastic pink flamingo was declared the official bird of Madison, Wisconsin. Lastly, the state flower is a Wood Violet, so we incorporated pale purple delphiniums to as an ode to this flower.

What is your favourite thing about the USA? The food, entertainment and larger than life atmosphere!

We included balloon installations which are so popular at the moment and make an impact at any event. Also, a fringe backdrop – need I say more? Other trends were the neon lights and light-up letters. Transparent decor such as the kid’s ghost chairs were added and customised with decals to embrace the Barbie theme. Also included were props embracing the curved trend with an arch as the centrepiece of the set-up. Finally, the cake design used edible printed paper matching the theme, achieving interesting effects both visually and texturally.

What inspired you to choose Canada? We hunted around Perth to find lush greenery and somewhere that had similar foliage and trees to what I have seen in Canada. Something with that ‘woods’ feel. What influenced the theme and styling? It was my son’s 4th birthday in August and I was planning his birthday party. He is Canadian, Jamaican and Australian! A nice little mix. He loves Canada as much as I do, so I thought it’s the perfect theme for a party – especially when your heart’s in it!

Which DIYs or party trends did you incorporate into your shoot? A current trend would be Epic Installs’ hanging installations. This is our new business. We hand make and cut every piece ourselves! Everything is reusable and biodegradable, a lot nicer for the environment than crepe paper. A DIY would be the popcorn cups with Kraft paper, and the cute little words with Scrabble pieces glued together.
