Meet the Bushnells: Thank you for your Service By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

currently in medical school and Synjon is a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. The Bushnell’s late daughter, Kenealy, passed in 2004 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. At home now is their son Bonaventure, a sophomore at SRVHS and their youngest kids, Maria Kekoa, 7th grade, and Keeldrum, 4th grade.

G

rowing up in Annapolis, Maryland, Jenny was raised with the U.S. Navy in her backyard. So it came as no surprise when she hit it off with the handsome sailor she met on a blind date. Chris’ cousin was right in thinking Chris and Jenny would make a great pair. They’ve now been married for 31 years! Jenny Bushnell graduated from Loyola University in Baltimore, MD and took up the role of mother and teacher. Covid-homeschooling was not a shock to Jenny, as she has been homeschooling the family’s 10 children for more than 26 years, and still has a few years ahead of her! Chris graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and went on to earn advanced degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and Naval War College. In May of 2018, Chris retired after 30 years in the U.S. Navy. Chris says, “I landed a job working for a Silicon Valley tech company based on my engineering background and experience building and leading teams. My role as a Surface Warfare Officer or SWO (which means I drove ships) in the Navy provided me a tremendous amount of opportunities: education, travel, moving 15+ times, exposure to foreign lands, cultures, food, as well as the opportunity to learn a great deal about people, leadership, and overcoming adversity, as well as developing solutions to challenging problems. I was lucky enough to command a U.S. warship at sea, and also be in command of a group of ships, in addition to leading organizations ashore as well as at sea.” The Bushnells may be easily spotted around town in what they so lovingly call their “People Hauler,” recognized by their unique stickers in the back windows, showcasing a loving family of sea turtles and highlighting the kids’ academic accomplishments. Currently Chris and Jenny only have three of their ten children at home with them, but at one point during COVID there were as many as 6 kids living at home. Cullen, their oldest daughter is a military spouse. Her husband, Joe, is a Captain in the US Marine Corps. They have three children. McGeady is a Lieutenant in the US Navy and is married to his lovely wife, Samantha. Xavier is an ENS in the US Navy Reserves. Blaise and her husband, Alex, are both 2nd Lieutenants in the USMC. Kavanagh-Faye is an ENS in the USN, 6

Jenny says that the kids at home spend their days much like everyone else, learning, studying, and relaxing playing video games and checking out TikTok. Kekoa and Keeldrum also love to jump on the trampoline and draw. When sports are in session, they play rec basketball and lacrosse. Bonaventure plays football and lacrosse at SRVHS. Being a military family meant lots of moves during the course of Chris’ career. The Bushnells have lived all across America - San Diego, CA; Monterey, CA; Newport, RI; Norfolk, VA; Pascagoula, MS; Washington D.C.; Pearl Harbor, HI; Annapolis, MD; Virginia Beach, VA. When the moves were coming to an end in 2017, Jenny and Chris decided to welcome one more family member into the house a Terrier Maltese Poodle mix named Lava. She is 4.5 years old and loves being the baby of the family! They’ve enjoyed family trips to Ocean City, MD and Hawaii, but truly love living here in the East Bay. They currently live near the police station, in a home that suits their large family needs. This past Christmas, the entire family (kids, spouses, grandkids) made it back to Danville for the first time in two years. They thoroughly enjoyed that time spent together. Aside from the space to APRIL 2021

host everyone, the other reasons that the Bushnells love their home is its proximity to all of Danville’s activities. Their kids are able to walk to the high school, they can all walk to St. Isidore’s, where they attend church, and downtown restaurants and bars are a stone’s throw away. The Bushnells are proud of their service to our country. Alongside Chris’ three decades of service, five of their children and two sons-in law are in the military. They all put into practice everyday the words that Chris and Jenny have instilled in the family: “Faith, Family and Friends...are what really matter. Embrace Life! We move as a unit!” Chris goes on to say, “ My wife and I were lucky to have a tremendous example set for us by our parents. They emphasize the importance of education and family. The leadership and example they provided us growing up set the example for us to follow and embrace; selfless over selfish. We are super proud that our kids see it that way as well.” Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share? Nominate your neighbor to be featured in one of our upcoming issues! y name is Audrey McClure and I am the founder and president of my club, Care4Kids. This has been an active club at San Ramon Valley High School for two years! Care4Kids is a club that collects gently used books from local families and elementary schools. While these books might be considered “damaged” in some eyes, others see them as valuable new supplies! I take these books and donate them to hospitals, schools in the Philippines, and even back to our own community. When the Covid-19 pandemic began, I set up tables at local parks and on the Iron Horse Trail, with free books to anyone who wanted them. I have already collected and relocated over 1,000 books! Please contact me at audreymcclure03@gmail.com with any questions. From children’s picture books to chapter books, I will gladly take them all! I hope to hear from some of you soon!

veryone loves to see the transformation of a home makeover. Revitalizing a home prior to listing is now trending in almost every real estate market. Professional stagers are continuously on the pulse of what aesthetic, features and amenities buyers are seeking, and with a simple refresh and strategic staging, your home becomes model ready, almost always guaranteeing a higher return on your sale.

Simple muted tones with pops of color along with an area rug create the perfect space.

Quick and easy updates like a new wall color, vanity and light fixture transformed this dated dingy bathroom into a vibrant and inviting space.

By adding some chairs, a table and a few pieces of tasteful artwork, this space instantly becomes more inviting.

You Plan For All of Life’s Big Events — Why Not Plan for the End of Life Too? By Robert A. Gordon Jr., President & CEO of Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Resident since 2017

D

eath is a topic many of us avoid discussing — but it’s an inevitable part of life.

In fact, families we serve are sometimes surprised by their strong opinions regarding funerals, cremation, burial, and more.

Many Americans don’t spend a lot of time thinking about how they’d like to be remembered, but when asked, they usually have preferences.

For example, when you think about your funeral, would you like it to be a somber gathering, or do you envision more of a party celebrating your life? Are there certain songs you’d like to be played? Or religious passages or poems you’d like read? Preplanning gives you the ability to make decisions about every detail and gives you confidence knowing these special touches will be included.

Few families realize that there are over 100 decisions to make after a loved one dies. It’s fair to say that many of your family members would have difficulty answering all of these questions on your behalf after you’re gone. Addressing this ahead of time puts you in control and takes away the guesswork from your family, saving them stress, reducing the likelihood of arguments, and giving them overall peace of mind. What many people do not understand about preplanning is that these consultations are free. It does not cost anything to meet with a professional to share your preferences. As with so many other aspects of life, taking a little time to plan now will pay off later. Whatever your preferences, it’s important to get them in writing so you have a record for the future. At Cypress Lawn, we’ve found people have different preferences on how they’d like to make these plans. Some prefer a self-directed experience filling out our online form, while others appreciate assistance from our certified planning specialists over the phone or even by scheduling a video chat. In all of our years helping Bay Area families preplan, one thing has remained the same: No one ever regrets putting their arrangements in place. With everything we’ve experienced this last year, that has never been more true than now.

y husband, Jeremi has always wanted to own a skate shop. He remembers with fondness growing up in Danvilleskateboarding and soccer was life. He will tell you about his seven buddies hanging out in a time before cell phones, cruising the trail rain or shine, about skating “yellow curb” and about the miles of memories, the moments, the friendships and the learning opportunities that came from being on a board. It took the pandemic of 2020 to gain perspective. We were all stuck in this strange distance requirement, our devise usage went up and there were no real things to do or places to go except the grocery store. Jeremi and I realized that skateboarding was one of the few activities we could do that got us outside, off our phones, and together as family all while staying six feet from others. We started thinking and dreaming and talking about how to make a skate shop happen. Question: are you ever really ready to take a chance, to take a risk, especially in the middle of a pandemic? Jeremi was- 1,000%. He believes in the positivity, friendships, confidence, expression and outlet skating gave him. The Danville Library Online and Front Door Service By Seng Lovan, Manager at Danville Public Library

T

he Danville Library, part of the Contra Costa County Library system, boasts many powerful online resources that are available remotely to anyone with or without a library card! You may also search for a title, author or topic through the online catalog and place holds on any item throughout the county. If you don’t currently have a card, any Contra Costa County resident can register for an e-card online and you’ll be able to place holds and take advantage of many online resources including downloadable audio and e-books. Another new and exciting service is that the library now offers lendable hotspots to provide wifi access to individuals who may need it. Please explore, play and take advantage of these incredible free resources from the comfort of home!

Finding New or Lucky Day Books During Front Door Service at the Danville Library: •

In the search box in the upper right hand corner of the library website, you can select the “Advanced Search” option just beneath the search box. Under the heading, “Use the Form to Construct Your Query,”

you may type in “fiction,” “nonfiction” or even a favorite author in the search box and under the heading “Limit my search results by,” you may select the Danville Library or leave at the default, “All Locations,” to search the full collection countywide. Finally, under the “Collections” heading, you may select “New” and the results should be all the new books based on your search criteria that are owned (but may not necessarily be currently available) at the Danville Library or countywide system. This would include the popular Lucky Day titles which are circulating as new books. You may place holds on any title and it’ll let you know what number you are in the queue. You’ll receive an automated notification by text, email or phone (whichever your account is setup for) once the item has arrived and is ready for you to pickup Please make an appointment to pick up your holds once you receive the notice it has arrived to minimize any wait times and so staff may pull and process items for you ahead of time Also, to find titles that are currently on order that you may place a hold on, scroll to the bottom of the library’s website where you’ll

CPC Danville Provides College Funds for Graduating Seniors

Applications Now Open for Four Students to Earn $3,000 Toward College By Deanna Dickerson, Director of Missions, CPC, Resident since 2003

C

PC Danville is accepting applications for scholarship funds from graduating seniors in the San Ramon Valley. Students are invited to submit any form of expression that conveys “How Being FOR Others Can Change the World.” One student from each of these high schools will be granted a $3,000 scholarship: California High School, Dougherty Valley High School, Monte Vista High School and San Ramon Valley High School. CPC will be donating $12,000 in total across four scholarships. “In January 2019, we started a community initiative called For the Valley,” said Tyler Scott, Lead Pastor of CPC. “We believe that being for others, like God is for us, can change the world.” CPC’s inaugural scholarship program invites students to think about and express how they have been for others and how doing that can make a difference to another person. The submission can be in any of the following forms of expression: a song, a photo, a painting, a dance, a drawing, a video, a monologue, an essay or a poem.

ooking for a turnkey approach to reimagine your interior environment? Casey Howard Interior Design brings an edgy-classic aesthetic to large scale and ground up residential construction and commercial interior design projects in the Danville community and beyond. When launching her namesake design studio in 2012, Casey Howard set out to explore, evolve, and serve clients who desire an edgy twist on traditional style. She applies a fresh perspective to her projects to create distinct spaces that reflect her clients’ lifestyles. Her business has grown mostly by word of mouth over the past 9 years. “People share what they love with others,” says Casey. “And I can’t think of a better way to be appreciated.” While earning her business degree at California Polytechnic State University, Casey studied abroad at the University of London. Her passion for design bloomed through her travels to 16 different countries. She went on to receive a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and spent eight years in the industry before opening her own studio. She still finds inspiration through travels and also in fashion. “I’m excited by materials and the fine details of garments and love applying these luxe elements to interiors in the form of trims, textiles, and accents,” says Casey. “Nature is endlessly inspiring for me and getting outdoors for hikes and quality time with my kids brings me joy and creative fuel.”

Casey is proud of the way community has come together in the past year in support of local businesses. As a Danville resident since 2006, she is a strong supporter herself, collaborating with local realtors, architects and builders; and looks forward to hosting events at her new studio, located next door to Sideboard in the heart of downtown. Away from the studio, Casey soaks up as much time with her 13-year-old twins, Olivia and Chase, as she can; enjoying hiking and skiing, while they still think she’s “cool enough to hang out with.” The family’s English Bulldog named Charlie adds her own brand of quirky energy to the mix, bringing everyone a lot of joy and laughter at home. The most fulfilling part of Casey’s work is building long-lasting relationships with her clients. “I love creating one-of-a-kind spaces and am inspired and challenged by every project as each is unique,” adds Casey. A New Look for Summer By Dr. Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS

S

ummer is just around the corner, and if you want to look your best, you’re probably already thinking about or shopping for new summer outfits. This time of year we receive a lot of inquiries and conduct quite a few consultations on various breast procedures. A breast augmentation is a great way to enhance the shape and volume of your breasts and fill out new outfits more comfortably. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to increase breast volume, helping you get breasts that better fit your overall proportions. This procedure involves the placement of breast implants, most commonly inserted under your breast tissue and chest muscles. You can also choose this surgical procedure to make your breasts more symmetrical or to restore breast size after pregnancy and breastfeeding has left them looking somewhat deflated. There are two main types of breast implants that you can select: saline or silicone filled implants. Nearly all of our patients choose silicone implants because they typically yield more natural looking and feeling results. A breast augmentation procedure involves making small incisions

through which the implants can be placed. You have the option to get an incision around the areola, under the breast, or in the armpit. Most of our patients prefer the axillary incision to avoid a scar on the breast. Once the incision is made, the implant is placed behind the chest muscle and never touches the breast tissue. Most patients do not have a permanent change in sensation after surgery, and the procedure will not affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed. There are two main groups of women that are typically interested in breast augmentation. The first group is women who feel they never developed the breast volume they desire. The second group of women who commonly seek breast enhancement are those that lost volume after pregnancy, a condition called post-partum breast involution. Breast augmentation is a safe procedure. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation. If you are interested in learning more about breast augmentation or other cosmetic procedures, please contact my office at 925.736.5757. We look forward to hearing from you… and exploring the possibility of sculpting a new you this summer season.

here’s nothing better than a light bright spring cake for Easter. Nothing pretentious or too rich, just simple and easy. What I love most about this cake is that it’s ready for the oven in 15 minutes or less and it can feed a crowd. This is also a great dessert for my friends who don’t love chocolate. A dish like this is guaranteed to “Wow” all the little Easter bunnies in your family this year. Now, get hoppin’!

Be Watchful This Month By James S. Duncan, ISA Certified Arborist

Red Turpentine Beetle

“I

An example of European Pear Rust

f April showers bring May flowers, then what do Mayflowers bring?”

As we get into Spring and the weather warms we find new challenges in our trees. Ash, both Modesto and Raywood, are susceptible to Anthracnose. Sycamores are very susceptible as well. If new leaves are small, distorted, die and fall off, it is very likely Anthracnose. As the weather gets hotter and dries out, a new crop of leaves will be produced. It may help to spray with a fungicide now, however fall injections are most efficient. There is a problem new to this area. It is commonly called European Pear Rust. This fungus (Gymnosporangium sabinae) actually has two hosts. It spends the fall and winter on Junipers or Cedars and the spring and summer on Pears. Orange gelatinous finger-like growth occur on the underside of Juniper twigs in the spring. They release spores that, according to several sources, can travel up to four miles and infect Pear leaves. The Pear leaves develop bright yellow, orange, or red spots on the leaves. Orange pustules develop in the spots and release spores in the early fall to reinfest the Junipers. It doesn’t seem to harm the Junipers and is mostly unsightly on Pears. Prolonged and extensive infestation of Pears may cause twig dieback and reduce fruiting. Pruning out infected branches is the only control I have seen for Junipers. If you have Junipers under or near your Pears,

925-550-8159 SoriaContractor.com

This Sycamore tree is infected with Anthracnose

you may want to remove them if this becomes a significant problem. Prune or strip off infected leaves as feasible. Thinning the Pears during the fall or winter may be helpful. It is recommended Pears be sprayed every 7-10 days during April and May to prevent infection. A fungicide with the active ingredient Myclobutanil is recommended. The Pears can be injected, but I’m told this has not proven effective. Monterey Pines should also be getting our attention. Starting next month: irrigate. These trees should get a good soaking with a deep root irrigator (spiky thingy) every 2-3 weeks into October or when it starts raining. Get your Redwoods and Magnolias too. Keeping trees healthy is the best defense against pathogens. Stop trimming your Monterey Pines until fall. Cut branches release a fragrance that actually attracts Red Turpentine Beetle. These attack near the root crown and if a tree is stressed will cause it to decline more rapidly and even die. Look for what looks like white or pinky purple sawdust near the base of the tree. Fresh entries will look like yellow or purple volcano like tubes. Spraying or injecting with an insecticide may also be helpful. So be alert and contact your favorite arborist if you see anything that concerns you. “Mayflowers bring Pilgrims”
