Happy April, Danville! Even though it certainly has been a wet winter, spring has finally arrived on the west side! Our tree lined streets are full of blossoms and the warmer days give us hope that we can soon put away those winter coats! If you are anything like me, April is a time to focus on planning family trips, outdoor activities, and a general feeling of renewal and optimism for the future.

This month we are so lucky to have the Altman Family as our Feature Family at Danville Living. You will learn all about how these East Bay natives became high school sweethearts, parents, and now Danville locals who embrace spending quality time with family and loved ones. On the first day of history class in their sophomore year at Northgate High School, Mark and Ramona sat down a couple of rows away from one another. After locking eyes instantly, both teenagers smiled and knew they had a special connection. They became close friends from that moment on, and after a year and a half of being friends, Mark and Ramona started officially dating at the end of their junior year in high school. The two managed to maintain their long distance relationship while Mark attended UCLA for college. He graduated with a degree in Business Economics, while Ramona stayed local, attending UC Berkeley, receiving her BA in Dance. Following her time at Cal, Ramona was able to put her degree and passion to use by teaching at a variety of dance studios in the Bay Area. Eventually, Ramona ended up back at her alma mater teaching dance at Northgate, while completing her teaching credential from Chapman University. Four years later, she began working at Dougherty Valley High School where she established the dance program and has remained the dance director at DVHS for the past 15 years. After UCLA, Mark attended Law School at UC Berkeley. He began his legal career at a law firm in Palo Alto before settling in at his most recent job at NVIDIA as a corporate attorney. While it is clear that both Mark and Ramona have been quite successful in their academic and professional lives, getting married in 2009 in Lafayette, and raising a family together remains their most precious and memorable gift to one another.

Becoming parents to three children, Emme (12), Ben (11), and Wavy (6), has been full of both challenging and exciting moments for the Altman family. Their oldest daughter, Emme, is a 7th grader at Charlotte Wood Middle School. While her favorite subject at school is science, you can find her most days taking advanced classes at San Ramon Valley Dance Academy. Emme has been dancing since she was 4 years old and loves attending competitions and many performances throughout the year. Ben, who is a 5th grader at Montair Elementary, loves math and has been taking Karate lessons through the Town of Danville since he was 6. This past year, Ben began tennis lessons through Youth Tennis League and has found another athletic passion he loves. The Altmans’ youngest child, Wavy, is a kindergartner at Montair Elementary. She loves her teacher and all of the friends she has made this year. Wavy also is a dancer just like big sister and mom! Although she started at only 3 years old taking Zoom dance classes during the pandemic, she is so happy to be in person taking real live classes. The Altman family is a busy bunch, but of course we can not forget their family pet, a betta fish named Rainbow Roll.

Meet the Altmans Family First

The year 2020 took an unexpected twist for the Altman family. In December, Wavy was diagnosed with Leukemia, a form of blood cancer. Soon after this difficult news of the Leukemia diagnosis, Wavy also contracted a very serious fungal infection that spread throughout her body and became life threatening. Wavy was transferred to UCSF, and the amazing staff worked miracles to save her life. Slowly her condition began to improve and for the past two years, Wavy continues to get treatment for both the leukemia and the fungal infection. In more recent months, Wavy is getting healthier and the family is “thrilled she is able to go to school in person and enjoy being a kid” again.

The Altmans love to travel, especially if it is a vacation near the water. This past January, the Make a Wish Foundation (www.wish.org) made dreams come true by sending the family to the Aulani resort in Hawaii. They enjoyed all the family friendly activities from making their own Mickey ears, to a private Meet and Greet with Disney characters, and of course, snorkeling. They feel so fortunate to have had that experience to share with each other. Another favorite is their annual trip in November to

Pismo Beach where they eat Clam Chowder at Splash Cafe and spend as much time as a family at the pool and beach. If you’re ever driving though Verona Ave, you have probably passed by their Cal flag waving proudly in the wind. Mark grew up going to Cal football games and of course since both Mark and Ramona are alumni, he is even more excited to share that experience with his family. The Altmans also are members at the B’nai Shalom Congregation in Walnut Creek, where Mark sits on the board.

Even though both Mark (Walnut Creek) and Ramona (Concord) are East Bay natives, they didn’t know much about Danville. It wasn’t until they got engaged, and Ramona’s brother and sister-in-law moved to Danville, that they began to have an interest in learning more about this area. After Emme was born, and their small apartment was being taken over by clothes and baby toys, they started house hunting in earnest (for those of us with babies, we can all relate)! Their realtor introduced and showed them around the west side, they immediately fell in love. Mark and Ramona have a large extended family that lives all over the Bay Area, and they appreciate that Danville is situated in a great location to be able to see their family often. The Altmans have been living behind SRVHS for nearly 13 years and have never looked back. They love their neighbors and the genuine community feel the west side provides to their family. Ramona really believes that “everyone looks out for one another” and people truly care about each other. Another benefit is having the Iron Horse trail literally in their backyard and having quick access to restaurants, local shops, schools and the natural beauty of our town. They find it is such a wonderful place to enjoy walks, grab a cup of coffee, or have the kids meet up with friends at Yogurt Shack

or Street Street. The Altman family feels fortunate to be a part of such a lovely community and would like to thank their neighbors for making Danville such a special place to call home.

MELT in your mouth goodness!

Have you tried the new burger joint in town? The Melt recently opened it’s 11th California location right next to Trader Joe’s and Chipotle. Our family decided to check out the new restaurant, and from the crowded house, it seems like everyone else in Danville is a fan!

The menu features burger classics, salads, sandwiches, mac and cheese and fresh garlic french fries. The adults enjoyed a delicious BBQ Bacon Melt Burger, Patty Melt and Caesar Salad, while the kiddos all shared hamburgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, homemade mac and cheese, and a family favorite, garlic parmesan fries. We ended the meal sharing sips of all the different shakes, and even though it was a tough call, cookies and cream inched out as the favorite.

We had such a fun and easy experience from start to finish at The Melt. It began with a self service kiosk option to order, along with friendly faces behind the registers (you can also order online for carry out or delivery through their App). The food arrived fresh, hot and tasty! We particularly loved the location (central to everything in town!), the throwback pictures to historic Danville and the Old Oak Tree, as well as the fun and casual vibe it brings to Danville. The best part, it is open late! Restaurant hours are from 10am-midnight, EVERYDAY! You will have lots of chances to grab lunch, dinner or a late night snack with the whole family.

Six-year-old Georgie is a pretty purrfect cat; he is a mellow guy who enjoys getting pets and having his luxurious coat brushed and likes to hang out with people but also enjoys chilling on his own. Nothing phases this boy, and he would make a great addition to any home! He may do well with cat-friendly dogs.

The college acceptance letters are arriving and plans are being made for the graduation party - invitations are ready to be sent, cake is ordered and senioritis is kicking in. Then, it occurs to you, “My life will be different.” Many years ago you may have been a budding college student, a novice in a new career, or even a young bride. And then life happened! You became promoted to “Mom”. This role has become your most significant identity. I remember going to my eldest daughter’s pre-school and being introduced as “Victoria’s mom” - a title that awakened me to my most valued role. With this title, I accepted the duties of nurse, educator, taxi driver, best cheerleader, advocate for a great school curriculum, party planner, and overall mentor and best friend. With two daughters, these duties played over and over and over for approximately 23 years. As they both graduated from high school to live their college dreams, I found myself questioning what my next role will be.

AtSRVHS we are excited to soon welcome the class of 2027 to our school and to our athletics program! SRV offers 24 sports over 3 seasons, and we encourage everyone to look into participating!! The following are some frequently asked questions and answers.

Q. WHEN DO SPORTS START IN HIGH SCHOOL?

A: The Fall sports season starts Monday, August 7th, 2023. Practice/tryout times and locations will vary depending on sport. Please reach out to the head coach of the sport you wish to play via email. Head coach email addresses can be found on our school website on each individual sports page.

Q. DOES SRV OFFER ANYTHING IN THE SUMMER FOR ATHLETES?

A: YES, we offer summer camps in various sports. Camp dates and times are being finalized now, and will be posted ASAP. You can always email the head coach to ask if there is a camp being offered for your specific interest. All camps are for fun, and to improve skills. No tryouts will ever be conducted during summer camps.

Q. WHAT KIND OF TIME COMMITMENT WILL I HAVE IF I CHOOSE TO PLAY A SPORT IN HIGH SCHOOL?

A: Our athletic teams compete in the EBAL, which is the premier league in the East Bay. Our athletes should expect practice and

games to be 5-6 days a week with nothing ever on Sunday. Typical practices will last approx. 2 hours.

Q. DO I NEED TO REGISTER PRIOR TO TRYING OUT FOR A SPORT?

A: Yes, we use a clearance platform called athleticclearance.com. Through this site, students and parents will create an account, upload information, and e-sign important documents. ALL athletes must be cleared through this site before participating in any sport. Are You Paying Too Much in Property Taxes?

Ifyour assessed value is higher than the current value of your property, you may be paying too much in property taxes. Given the surge in property values that we saw in the first quarter of 2022, it’s very likely that there are some new homeowners with assessments that are significantly higher than today’s value. Another possible situation is buyers who bought in recent years and bid significantly over their competitors, to make sure that they got the house, because most often the tax assessor places the initial assessed value at the amount of the sale. Of course, there are other circumstances that could lead to a high assessment, but these two are the most likely.

Here’s an example of the second scenario. A Danville house that would have sold in 2021 for $1,800,000, went on the market in February 2022, listed for $2,200,000. It should have been difficult to get the inflated price. However, due to high demand and low inventory, the sellers received 12 offers. Ten of the offers came in at or slightly above the asking price. However, 2 of the offers came in at over $3 million. Of course, the sellers chose one of the highest offers. Fast forward to January 2023, following an eight month correction in the market. Even though two buyers decided last year that the home was worth over $3 million, today’s reality might be closer to $2 million.

California State Revenue and Taxation Code, Section 51 authorizes the Assessor to temporarily lower the assessed value of any real property when it is greater than the market value as of the January 1, lien date. If you have evidence that the market value of your property as of January 1, 2023 is less than the assessed value, you can file a simple “Request for Value Review” with the County Assessor.

To start the process, simply go to the Contra Costa County Tax Assessor’s page (https://www.contracosta.ca.gov/191/Assessor) and select, “Review Your Value.” Select the appropriate property type. This takes you to a very simple, one page form that you can print, complete and return to the Assessor. The form asks for your contact information, the property information, and 3 “comparable sales” to

support your case. Please note that you must still pay any tax bills received, on time. If the review results in a change in your assessed value, then your taxes will be adjusted to reflect the difference.

Unless you are really up on the market, the best way to find your 3 “comparable sales” is to contact your Realtor®, who can provide you with the most accurate data. It’s important to note that the circumstances this year may be especially favorable, as values on January 1, may have been at their lowest. We are currently seeing a strong spring market and some values have picked up again. Tips for Communicating with a Loved One Experiencing Memory Loss

If your loved one is experiencing memory issues, or has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia, communicating with them can be frustrating. Your patience may wear thin and you may find yourself escalating into arguments that can stress your relationship. It’s important to remember that your loved one may not speak or act in the ways that you are used to. As your loved one’s memory loss progresses, it’s crucial to adapt your communication style in order to maintain a positive relationship.

Here are some helpful tips from the team at Carefield Pleasanton Memory Care:

1. Take a Breath. Taking a moment to breathe and counting to five will help diffuse any temporary emotions. Caregivers find themselves in multiple stressful situations every day. Mom won’t take her bath, or Dad refuses to eat or drink. Stepping away and counting to five can give you the patience to regroup and try again.

2. Avoid Engaging in a Power Struggle. Sometimes it takes letting go of being right or having the final say in an argument. Keep in mind your loved one is not sound of mind, so engaging in an argument is similar to pushing a boulder up a hill. The best option is to not engage or try to “win”. Instead, use neutral responses like “That sounds about correct.” or simply nod.

3. Redirect. Many with memory loss will talk in circles or become fixated on something. For example, if mom is fixated on the fact that she cannot take her daily walk due to it raining try to redirect her by focusing her attention on her favorite TV show or having her look through a photo album. Redirection helps your loved one refocus, but also helps you avoid meltdowns and conflict.

4. Try Assertive Communication in the Form of “Yes” or “No” questions. For loved ones with memory loss, avoid open-ended questions. Instead of “What would you like to have for lunch today?” ask “Would you like a sandwich or pasta for lunch today?”

Open ended questions can be mentally difficult for those with memory loss and can cause confusion, leading to anger and stress. Bringing your loved one closer to the point of decision-making can still give them a choice and exercise their independence.

Top Spring HVAC Considerations

HVAC systems tend to get the most attention during the roughest times of the year – during a cold snap and when the temperature climbs to unbearable levels. Once it handles the worst, all is well, right? Not necessarily. Spring comes with its own challenges that affect your HVAC system and how it serves you. Here are three such considerations.

Air Filtration

Spring can be the worst time of year for anyone with allergies, especially allergies to dust and pollen. Your HVAC system needs to be able to filter the air you breathe while providing you with enough fresh air. If you suffer from spring allergies, consider upgrading your filter to a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter. This will serve you and your family year-round, giving you added protection from all the allergens that make you sick, especially in the spring.

Ventilation is critical year-round, but if you’re lacking outdoor air, it can affect you just as much in the spring. At the tail end of the flu season, you need fresh, clean air day and night. If allergies are an issue, this is even more reason to ensure you have enough filtered outdoor air entering your home. Even if you’re comfortable enough to open a window one day, you may have to go back to an enclosed space for the next week.

Humidity Problems

When the temperature changes, humidity tends to follow suit. If your HVAC system isn’t equipped to deal with these changes, you can end up with moisture problems even at lower temperatures. Condensate may form in new places as cooler surfaces meet moist spring air. Depending on where you live, you may need additional dehumidification to deal with this time of year until your air conditioner can do the full-time job of dealing with humidity in your home.
