Happy February! Is anyone else enjoying the rainy season? I personally love a cold, damp day here in the East Bay. There’s no better excuse to grab some coffee and a book and just hang out without feeling like you need to jump into the hustle and bustle of the world. This month I am so pleased to introduce you to the Mirzai family. Nasser, Afsoon, and their three boys are passionate about their interests, family, and community. Meet the Mirzais: Family and Community By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017
I
t was more than two decades ago that Nasser and Afsoon Mirzai met in Silicon Valley, working at one of the many tech companies occupying the area. Their spark was immediate and a year after first meeting, they began their life together as husband and wife. Afsoon holds multiple degrees and certifications. She has earned degrees in the arts and sciences and is both a licensed esthetician and licensed Resident Care Facilitator for the Elderly. Until very recently, Afsoon owned and managed an elderly care home in San Ramon. Nasser holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Communication and Robotics from Fresno State University. He later earned a Master’s degree in Computer Science from Phoenix University. He wrote a book called Robotics Vision and is the author of numerous technical articles in the field of Infrastructure Architecture, Cloud Hosting, Business Process Automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing and Internet of things (IoT). He is the president and owner of a technology consulting company called Ambrosia Technology and has consulted for some of Silicon Valley’s most successful tech companies and many Venture Capitalists across the country. With three boys in the house, the Mirzai family is always doing something. Each son has their own interests, friends, passions, and with those varied activities comes a lot of time spent out and about. Sina, 16, is a Junior at San Ramon Valley High School. He is an avid swimmer at the high school and is also in the marching band. Like all high schoolers in our area, Sina has been staying home more than ever before. This unexpected time at home has allowed Sina to discover a new interest - streaming video games! He’s found a solid community online and has amassed a couple thousand followers. Check him out on twitch.tv at @Sinajune Soheil, 14, exercises his creativity in video production and editing. He also has a passion for acting and singing. He has been making short videos and practicing creative
filmmaking and editing with his many types of camera and video recorders. Suren, 12, stays active with basketball and soccer. He is also the family chef and loves to make breakfast for everyone! Suren just completed building his own PC from scratch. All three boys are involved on the youth teams, Rock and Wildside, at CPC. Any parent would agree that watching your kids get along and support one another is the greatest gift. Last year Soheil and Suren joined forces with another friend and made a short movie about the harmfulness of bullying. They made a strong impact and won first place for their work. The last six household members bring their own sort of flair to the Mirzai home - Sina, Soheil, and Suren each have two chickens that they’re raising. Everyone, including the chickens of course, loves rooting for the local Bay Area teams, the 49ers and the Warriors, as well as the SRVHS Wolves. Staying involved in their kids’ activities is important to Nasser and Afsoon. As a PTA member for over a decade in the SRVUSD, Nasser was always in and out of the boys’ different schools, helping where needed. Of Afsoon’s dedication to her family, Nasser says, “My wife goes above and beyond taking care of our kids and she works so hard to make sure they are [the best members of our community].” They love their neighborhood near the Livery: Afsoon and the kids have always had friends and playmates nearby. Living on the south side of downtown Danville allows the Mirzai family to walk to wherever they’d like downtown. On the weekends they often leave their cars parked and do all of their shopping on foot or by bikes. They love going on family bike rides and seeing other friends also enjoying the town while they’re out and about. “We moved to Danville over ten years ago for all the best things that Danville is known for, including small-town charm, safety, schools, parks and many other

great attributes. We have made Danville our home.” Nasser even recently took his passion for making Danville the best place to live by getting involved in local politics. The Mirzai family gets their strength and grace from their religious upbringing and continued relationship with God. As active members of Community Presbyterian Church, they work everyday to keep faith in the foreground of their lives. Nasser reflects on the advice his own father gave him the day he left home, “He said, when you fall, you get up,
shake it [off] and ask God to help you out. He is the only one that will always be there for you. I have lived by those words all my life.” Although 2020 prevented Nasser and Afsoon from bringing the family on their yearly summer vacations to France, Germany, Mexico and other states, and to Tahoe over the holidays, they are looking forward to the next time they can all pack up and head out on another adventure. Valentine’s Day is Sweet By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010
F
or the past 12 years, I have spent Valentine’s Day with my grandmother, Gloria. She’s 99 years old and it’s by far her favorite holiday on Earth. My husband and I like to treat it like an event. We drive up for the weekend, decorate her house, exchange cards, and have a fancy dinner with champagne. Her favorite part of the night, of course, is dessert. I always try to bring something fun and different each year like limoncello tiramisu or chocolate swans pastries. Sadly, this will be a socially distanced Valentine’s Day, but that won’t stop me from making sure she gets her sugar fix. So, with the help of my mother, I’ll be making a new and fabulous creation that will put a huge smile on her face...a chocolate trifle. Trifles are layers of cake, fruit and cream that can be made in lots of different ways. A dish like this is all about presentation and its best served in a tall clear glass piled high with whipped cream and fruit. It hopefully becomes a new favorite in your home. Happy Valentine’s Day!!!
Gloria’s Valentine’s Day Trifle Serves 4-6
You will need • • • • • • • • • •
4oz. Cream cheese, soft 1/2 Stick of butter, soft 1/2 C. Powdered sugar 1 - 3.9oz Package Chocolate instant pudding 2 C. Milk 8 oz. Cool Whip (1 tub), divided 1/2 Pound cake, (store bought) cut up into 1/2 inch cubes 1 C. Raspberry dessert topping 1/2 C. Dark rum (optional) 1 C. Fresh raspberries or sliced strawberries for garnish
In a parfait glass (or something close to it) place 3-4 cubes of pound cake. Drizzle a light teaspoon of rum over the cake, along with a teaspoon of raspberry sauce topping. Then add a layer of the chocolate pudding mix and repeat the layering until the glass is full. Top it with more Cool Whip and fresh raspberries or strawberries.
Putting it together In a medium-size bowl, whisk the milk and chocolate pudding together until well combined, about one minute. Cover and place the pudding in the fridge until needed. Using a hand blender, mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and butter together in a medium sized bowl until smooth (Make sure the butter and cream cheese is soft or it will come out lumpy). Add the chocolate pudding and mix well, then fold in half of the Cool Whip. Chill the pudding until you’re ready to serve.

When it comes to work, we all have gifts. Natural, God-given talents that give us energy and allow us to contribute to the success of organizations and teams. We are meant to use those gifts, and it is frustrating, sometimes tragic, when we can’t. Of course, if we don’t know what our gifts are, we can’t be sure that we are using them. Now, in addition to our gifts, we all have limitations—natural areas of deficiency that drain us of our energy and frustrate our ability to contribute to work. Though we can’t always avoid those areas, we are meant to minimize the time we have to spend on those tasks, though again, if we don’t know what those deficiencies are, we can’t minimize them. The Six Types of Working Genius is a model and an assessment tool that allows anyone—CEOs, schoolteachers, factory supervisors, college students—to identify their gifts and limitations so they can maximize their satisfaction and success in any kind of work they do. In thirty minutes, someone can radically alter their day-to-day job fulfillment or even their career direction. What a difference that can make in a person’s life. As it turns out, those six types of genius—Wonder, Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, Enablement and Tenacity—make up the six required activities for any work endeavor.
Whether you’re engaged in running a company, a department, a project, or even a family, all six are necessary ingredients for success. No one person can possibly embody them all, which is why teamwork is so important. Among those six types, everyone has two that we call areas of genius, where we get our joy and energy and have natural ability. We have two that we call areas of frustration, where we get drained of joy and energy and have little natural ability. Then there are two in the middle, areas where we might have some ability, but that are not a source of energy and satisfaction. Imagine if every company, every organization, every team knew the areas of genius, competency and frustration of their people and organized them for success. Imagine if every parent knew those areas of genius for their spouse and children. It’s not an exaggeration to say that there would be more joy and less misery in society. But that has to happen one person at a time and that person might as well be you. What are your areas of genius?

tamped as the oldest race track in America,” the race track located on the Alameda County Fairgrounds dates back to 1858 when it was constructed by Augustin Bernal, the son of a Spanish Don. The Palm Pavilion grandstands were filled with wagering bets for the first time ever in July 1939, which, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, made Pleasanton “the birthplace of horse racing in California.” Unless you have been down on the impressive track, it is quite hard to imagine that inside this historic 1 mile horse racetrack is the home of the Pleasanton Golf Center’s 9-Hole Golf Course! The historic site has been attracting people to the Alameda County Fair since 1912. With views of the massive Palm Pavilion, the East Bay Hills, the stables, and the Horse Racing Start Gate, to the Alameda County Fair logo water tower on the course, you can only imagine the glory and the pomp and circumstance that flourished during the

summers while the horses raced around the track and the county fair activity were in full swing. As times have changed, even now, hundreds of thousands of people get swept up in the sites, smells, and activities of the Alameda County Fair and betting on the horses in June and July. Located 14 miles south of Downtown Danville, The Pleasanton Golf Center’s 9 hole public golf course is right in the middle of the Historical Palm Pavilion Racetrack. The course was built in 1974 by Ron Curtola. The executive course white tee yardage is 1,681 and red tees are at 1,586 yards. It seems that once you enter the Main Gate to the Pleasanton Fairgrounds, you have entered into a different world. The course is charming and the etiquette of the staff follows suit. The golfers and the staff are kind, patient, and have an “old town” type of friendliness. You will get person to person instructions and big smiles from the gate guards. They will instruct you to “honk” before you enter the tunnel. What? Yes, you will make a right hand turn into an underground one-way tunnel only wide enough for one car. The “honk” will warn oncoming cars or pedestrians that you are coming through. Then, there you are, in the middle of the 1 mile oval racetrack. The camaraderie between golfers and the challenge of the game have generations of players gravitating to this quaint and challenging 9-hole, executive course with three Par 4 holes. Not only are the prices unbeatable, but you can move through this course in less than 90 minutes, which makes it so easy to get in a bit of golf without interrupting a day’s schedule. This winter the course has been bustling with activity. Tim, the Golf Marshall said, “people love it here and they always come back”. I understand why they always come back and have no doubt I will, too. This is also a good place to have regular golf group meet-ups with its central location, feasible rates, quick pace and undoubtable historic charm. **The COVID practices are in full swing, with the CDC protocol listed on their website. No need to worry about driving a cart on this course because it is the perfect walking course. Pushcart rentals are available for $4 which are cleaned and sanitized between each rental. R
ight before Christmas I got a new dog! His name is Brady. He is three and a half months old. Brady and I have the same birthday, so I know we are going to be best friends forever. He is a Golden Retriever.

He is fluffy and cute. Brady’s favorite things to do are play tug of war and go for walks, but he can’t walk very far because he is still so little. Every day we try a little bit farther. Dad still has to carry him home sometimes when he gets too tired. At home we run around outside and Brady sniffs everything. My favorite is when he carries leaves or sticks in his mouth. It is a lot of work to take care of Brady. I have to feed him and play with him. He nips a little bit still, but he is a puppy and that is how they say “hi” and play. Everyone says that Brady is going to be huge because his paws are so big. When he is bigger we will take him on runs and hikes. I can’t wait for summer so that we can go to the beach and go swimming with him.
