Meet the Seaburys Let’s Get Cooking! By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

B

en and Kim Seabury met in the “new traditional” fashion of online dating. It was love at first sight for Ben, as he recalls, “I knew I had found the One, and I better straighten up and keep her.” In July of 2015 they exchanged their forever “I dos” amidst the gorgeous rustic setting of a flower farm and barn. Kim attended college in the Bay Area, earning her BSN for Nursing. In 2020, she “took over for the Assistant Director of Nursing at George Mark, a world-renowned facility, that specializes in palliative, and end of life care for rare and terminal illnesses in children aged 0-26yrs old.” Showing compassion and strength to those who need it the most, her focus is on helping the suffering make the transition to a place of peace. Ben is a proud college dropout. He knew that leaving formal education behind was the best decision he could have made, and it allowed him to fight for and dive into his true passion - food. “An epicurean at heart, hospitality became his focus, and he was determined to own his own restaurant one day. Mission accomplished! Ben now owns and operates a very successful restaurant group throughout Northern California and Oregon.” Some of his restaurants include Polanco in Sacramento, The Star on Park in Alameda, and Ben & Nick’s Bar and Grill in Oakland. His most recent venture was opening El Charro 1947 in Walnut Creek. You can learn more about that journey on page 26. Together Ben and Kim have four wonderful kids. With the oldest two at Montair, both parents dedicate time to helping the school. Ben is a part of the Montair Dad’s Club and Kim is serving on the board of the Montair Foundation and co-chairs the annual Movie Night put on by the PTA. Giving back and donating to various other organizations focusing on children’s health and education allow them to show their girls how passion can help drive progress. Just a few months ago, the two oldest girls, Annabelle and Eleanor, 8

accompanied Ben and several other dad and daughter partners to a YMCA Adventure Guide event (their group is called the Crows) where they cooked pizzas at The Star and then worked with a local organization to hand them out to the homeless. One of the Seabury family’s favorite pastimes is rooting for the good ole Orange and Black - Go Giants! They all love going to games, although they had to miss a few intense home games at the end of last season, when Kim was quickly approaching her due date with their newest family addition. Annabelle is a 9 year old dynamo at every sport she tries. She is currently on the swim team at Diablo Country Club, a fierce defensive soccer player for Mustangs and an all around standout softball player for the SRVGAL Stompers. Just last month, she played in multiple softball games for 7 hours straight! Her easy-going and speculative attitude balances out that determination and makes for a young girl, “sure to explore the world abound and celebrate with all those she encounters.” If you know Eleanor, the most independent 5 year old you’ll ever meet, you know that she has never met a stranger, laughs with her whole soul, and is destined to be the next restaurateur in the family! Dad describes her as “Gifted in navigating social constructs, her negotiation skills [excel] at staying up late, tasking her sisters with chores and MARCH 2022

commanding her attire.” Keep an eye out for this young force out on the soccer and softball fields, and in the pools, just like her big sister. Three-year-old Addison Oakes is an adoring, sweet and intuitive toddler. How can you not fall in love with this little one when she is characterized as, “A lover at heart she shares her mother’s instincts, compassion, and kindness. A friend of animals and fairy-princesses alike, Addison wins the hearts of everyone she encounters.” The youngest of the Seaburys is not-so-tiny, little Easton. As with most four month olds, he loves his mama and daddy, his three doting older sisters, and of course, sleeping and eating. Big things to come from the little man of the house! And if four kids didn’t keep them on their toes, Ben and Kim also have two fun dogs! Bodie Boy is a 4-year-old Alapaha Bulldog. He’s big, loyal, and knows to rotate between the girls’ rooms each night so that everyone is protected equally! Maggie May on the other hand, is an 18 month old English Mastiff and in the words of her loving parents, is “cute and dumb, Maggie is the clown of the Seabury Household.” Perhaps that moniker will change the day she stops eating Barbie dolls and spending all her free time at the emergency vet! This outdoor-loving family lives up in the hills of Las Trampas, with

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses

the most amazing views of Mt. Diablo from their front porch. They love their home, not just because of the view, but also because of the wonderful families that they share the neighborhood with. All the kids have school friends within walking distance, and neighborhood get-togethers are frequent and filled with fun. Ben and Kim’s love of Mexico extends to their girls. Although the kids prefer Cabo, because, who doesn’t? - Ben and Kim enjoy spending their time in Mexico City. The art, culture, and food came home with them, and can be seen on amazing display at their restaurant, Polanco, in Sacramento. Working hard is ingrained in the Seabury name, and Ben and Kim are so proud to see all of their kids exemplify this family trait. They will continue to push for their dreams and when they hit those… they’ll dream some more and start the cycle over again! Do you know a neighbor who has a story to share?

ARF Adoption Stars

Jolly

By Cole Kuiper, ARF

Chris

Looking for a furry friend during this trying time? If you see an animal you’re interested in on our website, just fill out an online inquiry form. Once your inquiry has been received, you will be added to our virtual adoption queue.

Seven-year-old Jolly is a gentle fellow looking for his forever family. Leisure strolls around the park and a nice cuddle session with his person are idea activities for Jolly. This sweet pup would flourish in a stable, quiet home with a predictable routine. He has a positive history with other dogs and currently weighs 42 pounds. Jolly has stage B2 Mitral and Tricuspid valve disease. This means the valves in his heart are leaking, causing his heart to work harder, and that he will need to be on medication for the rest of his life, to slow the progression of heart disease.

Meet your forever friend at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, 2890 Mitchell Drive, Walnut Creek, during adoption hours: Noon to 6 pm Wednesday & Thursday, Noon to 7 pm Friday, and Noon to 6 pm Saturday & Sunday. Would you like to be part of the heroic team that saves the lives of rescued dogs and cats? Can you share your talents to connect people and animals? ARF volunteers are making a difference! For more information see our website, www.arflife.org, or call (925) 256-1ARF.

ARF adoption fees: $250 for an adult dog, $350 for a puppy (<6months), $125 for a special- needs dog, $175 for a special-needs puppy (<6months), and $125 for a senior dog (7+ years).

Nine-year-old Chris is a handsome man looking for a patient guardian with whom he can relax and snuggle with. It may take him some time to warm up, but once he does, he is a total love bug. Chris has a positive history with other cats. ARF Adoption fees: $100 for an adult cat, $150 for a kitten (<6months), $150 for two adult cats, $250 for two kittens, $50 for a special-needs cat, $75 for a special-needs kitten (<6months), and $50 for a senior cat (7+ years).

Words Matter Week at Montair

Montair Elementary School

By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

L

ast month Montair celebrated with one of their favorite Inclusion and Diversity initiatives, Words Matter Week.

The students spent the week thinking about and discussing how their words can affect those around them. They’re powerful and with that power it’s important to use them for kindness and love. Two classes showed amazing initiative and even made posters to hang around the school further emphasizing all the amazing power our words and action have in this world.

he Town’s latest public outreach survey closed yesterday, February 14, with nearly 1500 Danville residents, business owners, and visitors offering their opinions and feedback on Danville’s Downtown Master Plan Update. The survey was available between January 7 and February 14, 2022, and sought community input on how businesses and residents envision improvements to Danville’s treasured downtown spaces.

This project aims to reimagine some of the public spaces within the downtown to provide essential connection and engagement while balancing the need for adequate public parking, drainage facilities, accessibility to all businesses, and essential services such as trash pick-up. The Town has partnered with urban design firm SWA, which will now review all the input from the community survey and develop strategies for the Town Council to review. Survey results will be evaluated, and survey findings will be posted on the project website at www.DanvilleTownTalks.org. “We are thrilled with the number of responses the survey received. We know that the downtown is a treasured place, so it was important for us to get this feedback from the community,” said Jill Bergman, Business and Economic Development Director for the Town. “We want to thank everyone who took part and encourage people to follow the progress of Downtown Master Plan Update on the project website at www.DanvilleTownTalks.org.”

Diabetic Alert Dogs Save Lives!

EAC Ricki is alerting his partner that a shift in blood glucose is impending and it’s time to take action!

By Victoria Briskin, Early Alert Canines

F

or more than a decade, Early Alert Canines (EAC), located in Concord, California, has advanced its mission to improve the health, safety, and well-being of people with insulin-dependent diabetes through partnerships with certified low blood sugar alert dogs. Most clients have type 1 diabetes and rely upon insulin therapy to survive. While this can keep someone alive and help maintain blood glucose levels, it’s not a cure and doesn’t prevent side effects. If left untreated, hypoglycemia can result in unconsciousness, coma, or death in as few as twenty minutes. Diabetic Alert Dogs alert their partners in advance of an impending shift in blood glucose levels, allowing them time to take the necessary precautions or treatment to avoid dangerously low blood glucose levels. This provides a major relief, especially to the parents of children with diabetes, many of whom describe the helplessness and fear they experience trying to manage this life-threatening disease. The success of a Diabetic Alert Dog depends upon the collaboration between EAC and the client, their medical team, and the dog. Most of the available hypoglycemia medical alert equipment relies on accurate and continuous input from the person with diabetes, which is only effective when the person is awake, alert, and thinking clearly. In addition to human and mechanical errors, many factors can mitigate the efficacy of these tools. These range from temporary inattentiveness, such as when a person is sleeping, to medical complications, such as insulin resistance or hypoglycemic unawareness. A child’s potential inability to recognize and effectively communicate blood sugar changes can be a major stumbling block for caretakers. A Diabetic Alert Dog warns their partner under most any circumstance, including waking them in the middle of the night if necessary. EAC specializes in the unique needs of children, teens, and families and helps their clients have the tools to be resilient and thrive, despite the adversity of managing a chronic illness. They promote a sense of family and an equitable culture that includes a diverse community where each individual feels validated, supported, and celebrated for what makes them unique. They provide ongoing training and re-certification that is crucial for long-term success. EAC is an advocate for disability rights and works to educate the community about Type 1 diabetes, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Service Dogs. Recently, EAC has partnered with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in a pilot program to train COVID-19 Medical Detection Dogs. EAC maintains a small staff and relies upon the vital support of highly-skilled volunteers. Each dog-in-training requires the help of one or more foster homes that provide overnight care and reinforced

training. EAC provides the necessary training, supplies and support for a successful partnership. Some fosters provide care for months, while others provide an occasional home. EAC relies on donations and sponsorship to fund its programs, believing that any client who needs their service should have access without significant barriers. Their annual spring fundraiser, Bone Appetit: A Feast for the Dogs, will be held virtually this year due to the surge in COVID cases. A fun and interactive program is planned that will be live streamed on Saturday, March 19th starting at 5:30pm PST so that anyone can join us from anywhere! Sponsorship information can be found on their website: www.EarlyAlertCanines. org. Or visit them on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or Twitter. DANVILLE LIVING CA 15

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue KITTEN SEASON IS COMING! By Sue James, TVAR

into a bottle baby foster home – even a few hours can make a difference.

T var Needs Kitten Fosters

TVAR again provides all the necessary items you need to foster bottle babies. While being a bottle baby foster is more specialized than kitten fostering, what a wonderful gift you can give to these tiny animals that deserve that second chance. What a warm and fuzzy feeling you will have as you watch your kitties get adopted knowing that without you, they would not have survived.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) needs kitten fosters who can provide temporary homes for kittens prior to adoption. Kittens are fun, crazy, and loving little creatures that will reward your attention many times over. Fostering is a wonderful way to volunteer in the community. •

TVAR provides everything you need – food, litter box, bedding, toys, and medical care YOU provide love, nurturing and socialization. A small room separate from the rest of your living space, such as a small bathroom, is the perfect place to keep them. Even if you have pets of your own, you can still take in kittens and give them the chance they deserve.

• • •

TVAR also provides one-on-one training to teach fosters how to do everything necessary to raise kittens – as well as assist foster parents through the adoption process. For more information on how you can help save an adorable deserving life, or if you are ready to get started, please email: Kittenfosters@tvar. org

Bottle Baby Fosters Also Needed

Bottle babies are newborn orphaned kittens up to 4-5 weeks of age. They are not old enough to eat by themselves and time is critical to get them

If you are interested in becoming a kitten bottle baby foster please email: Kittenfosters@tvar.org

Tri-Valley Animal R escue (T VAR ) - Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public

Slow-Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

T

here’s so much to love about St. Patrick’s Day, no matter what age you are. When you were little, you loved looking for leprechauns and four leaf clovers in the grass. College was more about going out for green beer. But now that you’re an adult, the food is what matters to you. This slow cooked corn beef is perfect for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner with friends. The prep is minimal and the results are delicious.

Slow cooker corned beef and cabbage Cooking time: 8 1/2 hours start to finish Serves 6 You will need • • • • • •

4-5 medium red potatoes, quartered 3 carrots peeled and cut into large chunks 1/2 head green cabbage cut into wedges 1 corned beef brisket (3 pounds) with the spice pack 3 cups water 1 tablespoon caraway seed (option)

Whole grain mustard for garnish

Putting it together

Place the corned beef (fat side up) carrots and potatoes in the slow cooker. Add 3 cups water, sprinkle with seasoning packet and caraway seeds. Cover and cook on low for six hours. Gently add the cabbage on top of the corned beef and cook on low for an additional two hours. Remove cabbage, corned beef, potatoes and carrots from the slow cooker. Slice the corned beef against the grain and arrange on a platter with the vegetables and serve with mustard.

A New Convenient Resource to Share with Your Family By Robert A. Gordon Jr., President & CEO of Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Resident since 2017

D

id you know there are over 100 decisions that have to be made right away following the death of a loved one?

Many of the Bay Area families I speak with don’t realize just how many decisions need to be made until they are dealing with a loss. Many families also don’t know there’s a way to avoid a lot of the unnecessary stress associated with planning end-of-life arrangements. At Cypress Lawn, we’ve been offering preplanning services to Bay Area families for decades. Preplanning is the act of putting your endof-life preferences in writing with the help of a licensed professional. Think of this as creating a customized guide for your family that explains everything you would want after you are gone. We often call this “the ultimate gift” because it provides peace of mind to those who are left behind. It also protects them from making emotional decisions during an already difficult time. Your loved ones won’t have to worry about what you would have wanted — they’ll have confidence knowing they are making the right choices.

You can meet with one of Cypress Lawn’s preplanning experts at no cost. It’s a complimentary service we provide to all of our Bay Area neighbors. All you have to do is find a day and time that works best for you, and one of our caring staff members will meet with you in person, through a virtual video conference, or on the phone. As an added convenience, Cypress Lawn has created a free webinar you can watch from the comfort and safety of your home. This video will guide you through all the important decisions ahead. You can register for this free webinar today at CypressLawn.com/Watch-Free-Webinar/. We recommend watching this webinar, as it answers many common questions families have as they plan ahead. With generations of experience, our expert care team has the answers to all of your preplanning questions. Call us anytime at 650-550-8808 or learn more at CypressLawn.com.

Elements of the Perfect “Shelfie” By Casey Howard, Casey Howard Interior Design // photography by Thomas Kuoh, Kuoh Photography

S

tyling a shelf can go from gorgeous to a cluttered mess with a few wrong moves. Things often go awry when there are too many items, or when the objects are too similar in size and shape. We have two rules when it comes to shelf styling: variety is the spice of life, and less is most-definitely more. Apply these rules to a mix of the following elements and you’ll be on your way to creating the perfect “Shelfie”.

ART BOOKS

Our shelves and bookcases are meant to be interactive and functional in addition to displaying special items in an attractive way. Along with favorite and classic novels, we love incorporating great art books for a light read and gathering inspiration.

UNIQUE VESSELS & OBJECTS

Funky bookends, vintage boxes, small sculptures, and artisanal ceramics are items that make shelf styling personal and special, especially when these items have been collected through travels and experiences.

SMALL ART & PHOTOGRAPHY

Memories of life’s best moments add joy to a shelf, so a framed photograph or two are a meaningful element. Small scale artwork is a wonderful way to build a quality collection without large walls or a large budget, and they’re right at home on a shelf. Not to mention, artwork is a great way to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral palette.

SOMETHING GREEN

A touch of greenery adds texture and life to a shelf moment. Nature has the unique ability to make even a stack of paperbacks feel more alive and interesting. Sometimes our clients’ lifestyles call for faux greenery, which offers a close substitute. Dried florals and branches are also a wonderful low-maintenance option.

925-550-8159 SoriaContractor.com

A TOUCH OF THE UNEXPECTED

We love incorporating a touch of the unexpected into every space. A little bit of whimsy, edginess, or playfulness is a wonderful way to remember not to take a shelfie, or oneself, too seriously. Whether it’s a brass hand throwing a peace sign, or a bowl with edgy spikes, pick an item that makes you smile. Contact us to take your shelves, and entire space, to the next level.

Welcome to El Charro 1947! By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017 Photos courtesy of Chantel Elder, Eleakis & Elder Photography

S

itting pretty on a corner of N. Broadway in Walnut Creek lies the newest, yet classic restaurant that has captured the hearts of East Bay residents since 1947. Great food, cool atmosphere, and a cornbread that’ll knock your socks off, this is sure to be a new family favorite! El Charro began in Lafayette as a way to infuse authentic Mexican cuisine with a cool Cali influence. The original El Charro, opened by Fidel “Frank” Garcia ran for nearly 50 years before it was taken over by Laura and Dave Shields. These former employees ran El Charro with all the love and care of their predecessor and enjoyed seeing the next generation of El Charro patrons flock through their doors. Now El Charro is back for the elusive Act III under the watch of Ben Seabury and Jon Guhl. They’ve worked hard to honor the history of the original El Charro (hello Charro butter!) while bringing in fresh ideas and recipes. That aforementioned cornbread was actually a recipe that Ben’s mother cooked up throughout his childhood. Mood enhancing lights, quesabirria tacos (I really shouldn’t need to say more beyond that...they’re amazing) seating for parties of any size, and a margarita that you are guaranteed to love all come together to sing their siren song and call you through the front doors!

Advisory Partner or Paper Pusher? Demand more from your Realtor By Janice Jordan, Real Estate Broker Associate, Compass, Resident since 1998

A

long with all the good and bad changes that the Pandemic of 2020 brought with it, came the end of customer service as we knew it. I know that saying customer service doesn’t exist any longer is a strong statement to make, but I think that most of us can say we have experienced a shift in how we are treated as consumers. I have been a licensed Real Estate Broker for over 30 years. During my career I have also owned my own Loan Brokerage and Property Management Company. During this past year, I purchased an investment property in Maui. I used a local realtor and a local lender. I know that with each state, there are different forms, rules and guidelines and I needed to rely on the local professionals I hired to guide me through the process. I am sadly disappointed in the service I received. My Realtor never once made a pro-active call to discuss the disclosures. I just received them in an email saying, “please sign’. The disclosures, after review, were not filled out accurately. I asked my realtor if she reviewed the documents wondering why she would just forward them to me and ask me to sign and accept. She admitted to seeing the inaccuracies and agreed to send them back to the sellers for correction. This back and forth happened 2 more times whereby the sellers were not completing the forms accurately. In the meantime my agent told me that I needed to remove my contingencies. The fact that she would ask me to remove my contingencies when I hadn’t received accurate disclosure information is appalling. I refused. I was so shocked that my Realtor didn’t seem to be looking out for my best interests. She was just concerned with forwarding me documents with no review or explanation and asking me to sign. I had a similar experience with my lender. Never once was I counseled on the benefits of one loan program over the other, or paying higher points in order to receive a lower interest rate. I received no ‘service’ from this lender. I had an initial greeting call over the phone and then was passed off to the loan processor to gather and submit my paperwork. During the course of the escrow, the rate went up .25% and never once did I get a call from the lender advising me to lock my rate prior to another rate change. These agents were referrals and I did my due diligence as a consumer to check their reviews and tenure. Despite this, I still received less than favorable service. I worry that other buyers and sellers here may have experienced the same frustrations. I know that in my Real Estate practice I

assume that my Buyer or Seller would like an explanation of what they are signing and a roadmap as to how the transaction will unfold. I am pro-active in my efforts and explain each step in the home buying and selling process. Communication is the key to success. I thought every Real Estate professional did this. I have found out otherwise. I hope this has not or will not happen to you. Kudos to the Real Estate professionals who have maintained a high level of service and advice. These will be the agents that will be recognized and revered. They will be the ones who succeed when the market normalizes. As consumers we must demand professionalism. It is ok to ask for clarification and answers and to pause if something doesn’t feel right. Many of us have bought and sold homes before, but each market brings with it idiosyncrasies that only your Realtor or Lender may understand. Buying or selling a home is a significant financial investment; demand that your Realtor and Lender educate you, explain your options and discuss your possibilities from start to finish. Realtors and Lenders are our advisors, if you aren’t feeling comfortable get a second opinion. Let’s not allow our new normal to include inadequate customer service. Until next time…. See you around town, Janice Janice Jordan is a third generation real estate expert. She has lived in Danville for over twenty years. In her spare time Janice loves to hang out with her daughter Jenna and go on outdoor adventures of all kinds.

Considering Rhinoplasty?

Why Now Is a Good Time By Dr. Stephen J. Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa

I

t’s 2022 and wearing a mask has become a part of our everyday lives. We have them in our pockets, cars, all over the house and curse them when we see “maskne” developing along our jawline. What we’ve been seeing lately, are savvy patients taking advantage of their required use and hiding recovery from rhinoplasty surgery underneath them. Your nose is the most prominent feature on your face, and its shape affects the overall balance (or imbalance) that you see when looking in the mirror. A hereditary dorsal hump, an elongated tip or nose that is too wide is what we see most patients seeking correction for. Often, there are functionality issues or a chin that is recessed and makes the nose appear to be bigger. All these things can be addressed simultaneously, while results continue to showcase some of the most transformational outcomes in patients both emotionally and physically. Successful rhinoplasty surgery results from three important steps: 1. The surgeon must first evaluate exactly what the problem is, and which structural aspects of the nose need to be addressed; 2. Next, the surgeon must be able to visualize the right nose and sometimes chin for a particular patient’s face and conceive the most appropriate surgical plan which may include a small, custom silicone chin implant; 3. Lastly, the surgeon must be able to execute that plan both skillfully and artistically. Surgery generally takes 60-90 minutes and patients can expect a small amount of pain, bruising and swelling. All of which can be concealed underneath your mask, making your recovery nearly undetectable. Most patients return to in person work after a week. Or, if working from home, even after a day or two. The best way to determine if you are a good candidate for nose surgery is to schedule a complimentary in-person or virtual consultation where we can review the procedure together and address all your questions. If you are interested in learning more about rhinoplasty or other cosmetic procedures, please contact our office at 925.736.5757. More Than March Madness Parenting A High School Senior By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

M

arch is the month for College Basketball finals, but more traditionally, March represents new beginnings. March welcomes Spring with longer days, fresh blossoms and new birth of animals with all of nature’s wonders. For parents of high school seniors, March has become the month to anticipate college decisions, constant tugs of financial demands from Senior Prom expenses to graduation outlays and the required deposits to reserve your child’s spot on college campuses. March Madness defines more than the “Final Sweet 16” basketball playoffs. Every high school parent is aware of their own madness as they balance how to support their senior high school student and still keep their own sanity. How do you stay focused to be the best for yourself, your family, friends and colleagues? Part of staying balanced for yourself is the acknowledgment that life will change for you and your child come June. Yes, your senior also is feeling stress - stress waiting to hear from colleges and the stress of what next year will look like - stress of the unknown. Neither you nor your child may even be aware that anxiety has become a common feeling that produces stress. What you and your senior are experiencing are normal feelings because senior year is challenging. Typically parents recognize that there are more arguments and more frustrations. What matters is how you manage yourself and support your child. May I offer a few suggestions to guide you through a challenging time to turn it into a time of celebration? If you can identify the stress you are under, you can manage it. Naming what you are feeling is a helpful tool to stabilize these emotions. Once you are able to focus and break down specifics of what is triggering the stress, then you can create a plan to manage your needs. Similar to putting the air mask on yourself first before you can assist others on a plane, once you take charge of yourself then

you can partner with your child to understand what your senior is experiencing. I still remember the drama I created with my mom senior year as I tried to “bust out of the nest”. This scenario was recreated with my daughters in their senior years. The pointless arguments and up and down emotions are normal because your child is reaching out to be independent. How can you be there for them without getting sucked into “the dance”? The greatest gift you can give your child is the ability to be “present” for them - to listen without thinking of a response. This may sound easy, but it most definitely is not. As parents, we always want to have answers. Don’t underestimate the power of active listening. Often, seniors are very emotional about hearing from colleges; they are scared of change. Being present for them is a powerful tool as they work through these next few months. Recognizing your needs is also powerful as you navigate this important stage of your lives. This experience may also be the reminder that you will be an Empty Nester soon. (Empty Nester Syndrome will be discussed in a future article) Take a deep breath and remember that, with the proper management techniques, these life changing events can be a time of celebration for both you and your child.
