Meet the Roda Family: You Can Come Home Again By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

T

here are some couples that you meet and you just know that they live a life filled with fun and adventure. Adam and Jennifer Roda are one of those couples. From the moment they met, on a whitewater rafting trip in California, to their engagement in France, and now navigating the thrills of parenthood and careers, they’ve tackled everything together and look forward to so much more! Jennifer and Adam’s story begins in a remote part of Northern California. Adam made his way up there with a group of old high school friends and Jennifer went with her roommate, a sister of one of Adam’s friends. Adam reminisces, “There were no rules on this trip, we were given the boats without guides, atypical but we knew the folks running the company. The two of us ended up being the captains of an armada of people intent on partying, not navigating the river. Seeing Jen get bounced out of our raft while leading the charge through the whitewater was good enough for me. “Jen From the River” and I got together as soon as we both made it back to the city.” Before their wedding in 2014, Jen and Adam solidified their ability to face adversity and challenges together by backpacking all around the world.

In 2017 the couple and their daughter Bailey (5 years old), moved back to the same home in Danville that Jennifer grew up in. This house has been in the family since the 1960’s and saw not only baby Jen come home from the hospital, but a generation later saw her son, Harlan, now 3 years old, arrive as well. Along with adding new family members, the Rodas have also done plenty of work on their home, renovating it and completing an addition to give the kids and 7-year-old labrador, Hank, plenty of space to run around. Hank is described as “everyone’s best friend” - he is a happygo-lucky guy and a skilled escape artist, “Recently, he spent the afternoon at an engineering firm downtown after the staff there were kind enough to take him in while they looked for his owners.” One of Hank’s favorite pastimes is pheasant hunting. “He is very enthusiastic about having a job that contributes to the family, and stands by proudly on the nights that we prepare pheasant for dinner.” Renovating their current home wasn’t the first home project they took on together. They took Jennifer’s eye for design and Adam’s “jack of all trades” mindset and flipped a couple houses together early in their marriage! Their other hobbies include just about anything that the Tahoe region has to offer - skiing, mountain biking, snowmobiling, boating, and more. Adam grew up in Mt. Shasta, CA, where he skied competitively, and passed that love onto Bailey and Harlan, who can both hit the slopes at their young ages. Based on how they drive their snowmobiles and four wheelers, competition might be in their future too. “Bailey is known

6

for building jumps, and Harlan is of the opinion that speed limits are more of a suggestion than the rule,” adds Jennifer. Back in the East Bay, the Rodas love to take walks on the Iron Horse Trail, hike through the amazing surrounding hills, and of course make multiple pit stops at the Yogurt Shack. The kids also take piano lessons at Danville Music. Last year the whole family piled into an RV and drove it through the Southwest. These trips and activities and love for the great outdoors all feed into the Roda family motto, “Be curious.” That curiosity extends well into adulthood: the desire for personal growth and higher learning is shown everyday as dad, Adam, works on his MBA at UC Davis. He is currently a project manager in the pharmaceutical industry here in the Bay Area. Jennifer went to the University of Oregon and decided to make wine her career. She works for Napa Valley winery Trinchero Family Estates. As a family of go-getters, it’s no surprise that mom and dad are “extremely proud of the adventurous spirit we see in our kids and try to foster their confidence as much as possible.” With Bailey heading into kindergarten in the fall and Harlan growing more independent everyday, it will be fun to watch what new adventures they take their parents on next! One-year-old Julia is not only adorable to look at but she has such a delightful personality as well. This petite girl is a major cuddle bug and likes nothing better than to snuggle, purr and make muffins. Julia tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and should be kept indoors to protect her immune system. FIV is specific to cats, and does not spread through casual contact such as shared water bowls, litter boxes, snuggling, or playing with other cats. The adoption fee for kittens (<6 months) is $150, for adult cats is $100, $25 off each for multiple cats/kittens, and senior cats (7+ years) and special needs cats are 50% off the adoption fee.

Hello QWO. Goodbye Cellulite By Stephen Ronan, MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa

history of cellulite investigation to help determine the safety and efficacy of the product. These two identical trials enrolled 845 women in the United States, aged, 18 or older, with moderate to severe cellulite. During the trials, reductions in cellulite severity were observed more frequently in the QWO group compared to the others.

A

t Blackhawk Plastic Surgery & MedSpa we’re always looking for the latest aesthetic treatments to offer our patients. This month we are thrilled to announce an exciting new, non-surgical treatment plan for cellulite called QWO. QWO (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) is a revolutionary new product from Endo Aesthetics. It is the first and only FDA-approved injectable for the treatment of moderate to severe cellulite of adult women, and we are one of the first practices in the Bay Area to offer this exciting new product. There are typically three things that cause cellulite’s distinct dimples: over time, your skin thins, fat cells enlarge and push against the skin, and the fibrous bands under the skin’s surface thicken and cause tension. QWO is made from enzymes called collagenases. When injected, these enzymes target and break down the fibrous bands under the skin. Once the tension in the bands is released, fat cells are redistributed to help smooth out surface dimples. Before introducing QWO, Endo Aesthetics conducted the largest clinical trials in the

If you are interested in learning more about this new cellulite treatment plan, I encourage you to call or come in for a consultation with me or one of our nurse practitioners. Yes, I know it can be hard to talk about something as personal as your cellulite, but perhaps you can take comfort in knowing that you’re not alone in your struggles. Approximately 90% of women have cellulite, no matter what they eat or how much they exercise. If together we determine that this new QWO product is right for you, we will develop a personalized plan, including the target treatment areas and total number of treatments. At each office visit, injections take as little as 10-15 minutes. Visible results are typically achieved in 10 weeks, and most women can expect to come in for three treatments, 21 days apart. Please call our office at 925-736-5757 to learn more about QWO or to schedule either an in-person or virtual consultation. For a limited time, we are offering introductory pricing that can save you 15% or more on your first cellulite-busting treatment plan. We look forward to introducing you to QWO and helping you say goodbye to cellulite.

Adventure Time

Emu Adventure By JP Sullivan, Second Grade

A

few weeks ago I went to the Makers Market at Balestrieri Farms. When we got there we went to the food trucks waiting outside. I had a hotdog and my sister shared a waffle with my dad. Before we left we tried the homemade pizza and sugar cookies. They were all delicious! It was pretty cool walking around, looking at all the shops and crafts. I even saw a place where you could do ax-throwing. In between the shops, behind a fence were a bunch of goats. I was very excited to see the animals. On the way to see the goats, we found two Easter Bunnies and took some family pictures. Then, we saw a huge, Ostrich-looking bird walking towards us. It is called an Emu. The Emu was walking back and forth near the street. I was surprised because he wasn’t scared by the fast cars that were racing down the road. He looked kinda crazy. His feathers were sticking out everywhere and his face looked really grumpy. He had a big, long claw on his feet. There are also Emu’s at the Oakland Zoo. Go check them out!

Local Sports

Spring Sports are BACK at SRVHS! By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004

F

or the last 5 1/2 weeks I’ve been following the High School football games in our area: in particular Monte Vista and San Ramon Valley High School. I wasn’t about to miss the opportunity to take pictures of their return to play, especially after this last year. It’s been awesome to finally capture their time doing what they love: from baseball to cheer. We’re only a few days away from the last game of the football season. SRV’s record is 3-2 going into this game. Oh did I forget to mention it’s against their bitter rivals Monte Vista who are presently 0-5? My wife just yelled out “Go Wolves,” but I’ll practice my journalistic integrity and not say anything. I’ve been to few of Monte Vista’s games and they were playing tough with a lot of heart. I’m guessing it’s going to be a good game. They usually don’t disappoint. Can’t wait to follow up next month’s print with photos from the rivalry game as well as other sports’ pictures. I have more pictures from the games on my Facebook page: @ RickyHeltonPhotography Keep an eye out for our local sports and pictures online at https:// bvmsports.com

Have You Tried Thai House Restaurant? ! d l u o h S u Yo By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

T

ucked just behind the bustle of Hartz Ave. is Rose St., a hidden gem with one of Danville’s most loved restaurants, Thai House Restaurant.

In the summer of 2003, executive chef Sam Sendee and his wife Marysa Sendee brought to life Sam’s dream of opening a restaurant in America. Since its opening, Sam has spent endless hours creating modern takes on classic Thai dishes. Regularly since 2011, he has been given the Bib Gourmand status from the Michelin Guide, and continues to be the only restaurant in Contra Costa County to achieve that! By providing excellent customer service and truly delicious food (it’s so good in fact, that a resident emailed me to lay heaps of praise on Sam and Marysa and their amazing business!), Thai House Restaurant has earned loyal patrons and excited firsttimers. They are currently open for indoor/ outdoor dining and takeout.

With high hopes of eating the best thing on the menu, I did ask Marysa what her favorite dish was, she said, “I don’t think we could possibly choose one dish to be our favorite, all dishes are made with our finest effort.” Guess we’ll have to try them all!

Cooking Corner

Shrimp Sensation By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

T

his one goes out to all you shrimp lovers out there. One of the things I really love about the warm weather is eating most of my meals in my back yard. I can’t explain it, but there’s something about eating outside that just makes food taste better. Wouldn’t you agree? Without a doubt, this is one of my new favorite dishes to enjoy while I watch my cats chase each other and my flowers start to bloom. Think of it as a fancy shrimp pizza. It’s wonderful on its own as an appetizer, but adding a salad will definitely turn this into a very lovely lunch. Most of all, it will definitely impress your foodie friends. I love dishes like this because they are so unexpected. Imagine bringing something like this out on a carving board and slicing it up in front of your guests. You’ll be the talk of the town with all of your seafood lover friends.

Shrimp Sensation Serves: 4-6 | Time: 35- 40 minutes You will need •

• • • • •

1- 12 oz. Loaf of French bread, cut in half lengthwise and hollow out a little of the bread in the middle. 1/2 C. Mayo 2 T. Butter 3/4 C. Finally chopped sweet onions or shallots 3 Cloves chopped fresh garlic 1-16 Ounce bag cooked

• • • •

medium or large shrimp 1/2 C. Green onion, sliced 1/4 C. Fresh parsley, chopped 1/2 C. Grated Parmesan cheese 3/4 C. Shredded pepper jack cheese or Monterey Jack cheese if you don’t like spices.

Putting it together

Preheat the oven to 375°. Place the bread halves cut side up on a baking sheet. Divide the mayo between the bread slices and spread the mayo evenly across. Set it aside. In a large skillet, melt the butter and sauté the onions on medium until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for one minute. Add the cooked shrimp, green onions, and parsley, and stir until well combined. Cook until the shrimp is heated through, about 3 to 4 minutes. Divide the shrimp mixture between the bread halves and spreading them evenly across the bread. Top it with both cheeses and bake until cheese has melted, about 10 minutes. Next, turn your oven to broil and heat until the cheese has browned, about two minutes. Top with parsley and slice the bread into the desired serving size. Serve warm. Stephanie Seaberg has lived in the East Bay for the last 30 years, and is a SRVHS Alumni. Steph is a play-writer and director for Theater Performance Workshop, KAOS Camp, and Golden Oak Montessori. Tee Time

Tee it Up in the Hills of Pleasanton By Lynne Harrosh, Resident since 2008

R

ich with history, the private country club, The Castlewood Country Club, is surrounded by natural beauty of the Pleasanton Ridge, Kilkare Woods and Augustin Bernal Park foothills on the west side of highway 680. This magnificent piece of land, once the home of the Ohlone Indians, The Bernal Rancho and the Alisal Rancheria, was purchased by the Hearst Family in the late 1800’s. We know, as residents of this beautiful valley, how amazing our weather is yearround. The weather is specifically why the Hearst Family chose this prime piece of property. It was the perfect place to get away from the foggy San Francisco summers. This influential couple, Mrs. Phoebe Hearst and Mr. Hearst, created so much traffic that the Western Pacific created the “Verona Station” for the 40-50 guests Mrs. Hearst would entertain each weekend. As the tradition continues, Castlewood still has amazing weather, views, and is the perfect place for friends to gather. In 1924, the Hearst family sold the property and thus, Castlewood

Country Club was created on 500 acres of rolling wooded land. There are currently 190 home sites in the Castlewood Community, which includes all the luxuries of a country club: tennis courts, bocce courts, a swimming pool, a magnificent clubhouse in which to socialize. The first golf course on the hillside was developed in 1926. The second one in the valley was designed and created in 1948. The 18 Hole Hill Course, designed by William P. Bell, is regulation length at 6,240 yards, 70 par, 127 slope and a rating of 71.1. There are slopes and hills, right-left and up-down, for every shot you will take. The greens on this course are tricky, but very well maintained. As with most privately owned courses, the greens and fairways are beautifully maintained with thought and continual care. Hole #17 is a par 3. The actual yardage is 210 but plays at about 150 because of the elevation and slope of the hill. Everything rolls down and to the left! This is the hole they use at tournaments for a Hole-in-One game. A woman actually did get a hole in one not too long ago! There are many places throughout the course, whether on a tee box or in the middle of the fairway, where you can catch a spectacular view of the Tri-Valley. At other times, it seems you are on the edge of the forest. Hole #18, a par 4, also starts off at a high elevation with 410 yards to the pin. On this hole you can see the swimming pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, sweeping views of the valley and even the 1st tee where you began. The course widens in the middle and is a bit lower than the green where there are a few bunkers hugging its sides. There is never a dull moment on the Hill Course. Castlewood, the private country club, is a beautiful place to spend the day, socialize with friends, swim, play tennis and to play golf. This private hillside community continues to be one of the top-rated places to live, socialize and play since the 1800’s.

Currently they are gathering stories from YOUR experience during the last 12 months. Below is an excerpt from the website to describe this amazing project. “We are living through historic times. It is the mission of the Museum of the San Ramon Valley to collect and preserve the history of the Valley. It is fitting that the museum collect the stories of Valley residents and how they have lived during this time. For future generations, the thoughts and experiences of people during COVID-19 will give valuable insights of what it was like to live at this time.

To get started, simply e-mail your content coordinator at asullivan@bestversionmedia.com with your contact information and ideas. With your help, we can bring our community together and celebrate the praiseworthy stories of our own local athletes. Who knows? Nearly 80% of residents use Alexa every day, whether asking to hear a favorite song, setting reminders or turning on the lights when entering the restroom. For residents with mobility or vision issues, these features are exceptionally useful and easy to use. The corresponding K4Connect app provides residents with easy access to community information and their peers, linking them to family, friends and community life. The many features of the app

include a directory with resident photos, community photos, daily menus, upcoming events and the ability to communicate with family members via video chat calls. The K4Connect family app also makes it simple for family members to contact their loved ones living at Eskaton, check the menu and view the community announcements, themselves. This partnership is only one example of Eskaton’s determination to improve the quality of life of their residents by identifying and implementing innovative solutions. The Bay Area’s Largest Tacori Event is Coming Up in May! By Alexis Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

M

ark your calendar for the weekend of May 21-24 for the Padis Spring Tacori Event. The Tacori brand, first popularized by the engagement ring designs featured on The Bachelor television series, specializes in engagement rings and fine jewelry for the modern bride. With the San Francisco Bay Area’s largest collections of Tacori, Padis Jewelry is ready to help make every proposal extra special with handcrafted rings from one of today’s hottest designers. As a fellow family-owned business based in California, Padis Jewelry takes special pride in being a Diamond Partner with Tacori; one of just a handful of Tacori’s such partners in the world. Handcrafted in California, Tacori’s remarkably detailed rings and fine jewelry pieces become timeless symbols of connection that join individuals and generations, especially so when paired with Padis Jewelry’s diamonds as centerpieces. Every facet of these dramatically beautiful pieces reflects the passion the Tacorian family has for creating beautiful heirlooms, meant to be treasured for generations. This extra attention to detail, personal craftsmanship, and stunning beauty, which transforms each Tacori design into a unique work of art, is known as the Tacori Touch.

To participate in all of the savings taking place that weekend, call the Padis Jewelry team at (415) or concierge@padisjewelry.com to set up an appointment.

The Tacori legacy began with Haig Tacorian, who left Europe in 1969 to start a new life in the United States. In California, Haig and his wife, Gilda, devoted themselves to creating fine jewelry with a unique and distinctive European flair. Today, Haig is still the patriarch of the company, and is aided by his son, Paul, and daughter, Nadine, as well as several other Tacorian family members- all proudly carrying on the family tradition of passion, quality, attention to detail and personal client care. Each of the Padis Jewelry locations features an exclusive Tacori boutique, where you can browse the largest collection of Tacori designs in California, including all of the designer’s freshest styles, in both bridal and fashion jewelry. Be sure to join us for our Tacori Spring Event May 21st through the 24th at our Napa and San Francisco locations to peruse the largest selection of Tacori and diamonds while enjoying champagne and hors d’oevres; the perfect way to select your next heirloom. Shoppers can examine and try on any Tacori piece in person before making a decision on their one-of-a-kind treasure. For those looking for reasonably priced bridal sets, make sure to ask about special pricing, flexible payment plans as well as interestfree financing. In addition to seeing Tacori’s esteemed collection, Padis will also offer exclusive pricing for those who attend the May event. Customers can anticipate special Tacori gifts with their purchase, as well as engagement ring and diamond package deals that will last through the weekend.
