Meet the Harrigans: Dreams come true! By Alexandra Sullivan, Resident since 2017

T

hey say “timing is everything”, and when you take the plunge into dating, especially in a big city like San Francisco, you hope that the timing is there… in the case of Sean and Tami Harrigan, it was the perfect time. In fact, Sean was Tami’s first date through eharmony.com! They met at a wine bar in North Beach called Dell Uva. “I still remember walking up being ecstatic that he was even better looking than his photos,” Tami says. Clearly Sean knew he found his perfect match, because he asked Tami out on a second date at the end of the evening, and they’ve been together ever since. Sean’s family has a cabin tucked in the Eastern Sierras in a small mountain town called June Lake. He says, “it holds a special place in the hearts of anyone who visits. When we found a venue overlooking Gull Lake, we knew it was the right place for us to officially start our lives together.” Since Tami’s family lives in Illinois, they all had to travel. “it was quite the journey for them, but I think that they understood what the fuss was all about once they arrived.” So in July of 2015, surrounded by nature’s beauty, family and friends, Sean and Tami exchanged vows and headed back to the Bay Area as husband and wife! Prior to moving to San Francisco, Tami graduated first from the University of Illinois with a BS in Finance, and then earned her

Tami’s hard work and perseverance is not only evident in her work accomplishments, but her personal ones as well. As a running enthusiast, Tami has run dozens of half marathons, several full marathons, and plenty of triathlons over the years. For an ultimate test of strength and endurance, Tami trained for the Lake Tahoe Ironman in 2014, which was unfortunately cancelled right before it was about to begin. With the training in the mountains came the opportunity to get to know Sean’s family better, “I was blessed to be able to spend many weekends in Incline Village in Lake Tahoe, where Sean’s parents have retired. At the time, we weren’t even engaged yet, but they graciously let me and my training partners make their home ‘training headquarters’ in the months leading up to the race.” To note a silver lining from that year - while training in Incline Village over Labor Day weekend, Sean asked Tami to marry him! She eventually did get to compete in an Ironman race this time in Arizona. With two little boys at home, Tami is more focused on fun and quick ways to train, like Spenga and Peloton. Sean graduated from the University of Arizona with a BS in Accounting and is a CPA. He is from Danville originally, and actually had a famous grandmother - Gale Storm of My Little Margie and The Gale Storm Show, Oh! Susanna. If you ever head to Hollywood, you can find her three stars on the Walk of Fame! How exciting to have that family history preserved forever! About three years ago, after plenty of sleepless nights, thanks to his then newborn son, Sean began forming an idea for a hazy beer and barbecue joint. If this is sounding familiar, it’s because Sean is the CEO and co-founder of Danville’s own Hazy BBQ restaurant. His brother Brendan, a former accountant as well, spent a year honing his pitmaster skills after Sean pitched the idea of the restaurant, and the two of them set out to bring barbecue to the Bay. “It felt too good to be true when we found the space at 200 Hartz Avenue, a dilapidated building we had walked by hundreds of times just ½ mile from our home. In May of 2019 the lease was signed and the rest is history!” After almost two years of construction, including a 6+ month delay in the middle of a pandemic, Sean and Brendan opened Hazy BBQ on Hartz Ave in December of 2020. The Harrigans say, “It has been a wild ride to say the least, we’ve really relied on our faith in the darkest moments of the journey. We have been blessed with an amazing network of friends in the community who really showed up for us when we needed it the most. We are forever grateful and look forward to being part of the fabric of Danville for many, many years.” Tucked in the back of the restaurant are the restaurant’s two smokers, named after Sean’s favorite show, Mulder and Scully. Tami, who also loves to cook, is often contributing to the menu at Hazy.

8

OCTOBER 2021

Some of the many patrons you’ll find at Hazy include Sean’s lifelong friends from growing up here in Danville. If you’re lucky enough to come across them, ask about Sean’s “Bay Area Hit of the Year”, from his senior year in high school. Tami says, “the story is still a bit of a legend amongst his friends and sometimes the video footage will come out too!” Sean is still a big sports fanatic and uses that CPA brain to keep track of stats and players across any sport you can imagine. He grew up tailgating in Oakland, and is now what is referred to as a “recovering Raiders fan.” Sean and Tami have two boys, Hudson, 3, and Walker, 1. These energetic little boys love everything from trash to wrestling with each other and being outside. Swimming and scootering are more of Hudson’s favorite things to do. As a family they enjoy walking out their front door in the Ryland cottages and walking through nearby downtown. And of course, the one keeping everyone on their toes is Roxie, a black lab that’s earned her nicknames (with lots of love!) of “Beast” and “The Thief.” The Harrigans love their neighborhood, saying that their neighbors have become some of their best friends in Danville. They also attend nearby Community Presbyterian Church. With two young boys, a pup, and a restaurant approaching its one-year anniversary, life is pretty busy for Sean and Tami! If you get a chance, pop in to Hazy BBQ and say hello!

Adventure Time

Our Trip Back to Maine By JP Sullivan, Third Grade

was actually born in Maine - just like my dad and little sister. Over the summer we went back for the first time in a few years and had such a great time. The first place we went was to downtown Portland. It is such a cool city with lots of food and stores. We went to a donut placed called The Holy Donut. They make the donuts with potato flour and come in all sorts of crazy flavors. After, we walked around for bit and checked out the lobster boats and the wharf. We spent a couple days visiting with family and friends. On our last day we went back to one of our favorite spots. Before we moved to Danville we used to live right down the street from Wallingford’s. It’s an apple orchard and fruit farm. Since it was summer time, there was no apple picking, but we fed goats, ran through a corn maze, and then picked so many blueberries.

White Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Shake By Stephanie Seaberg, Resident since 2010

F

all is here! I certainly get tons of amusement from watching people try to sneak pumpkins into anything and everything the minute fall arrives. Pumpkin soaps, pumpkin candles, and even pumpkin beer (I’ll pass on the beer). So, I may as well join everybody that’s on the pumpkin bandwagon with a boozy pumpkin treat to enjoy while the weather is still warm. If you have a pumpkin spice latte lover in your family, this shake is sure to impress. It can also be made without alcohol.

Serves: Either 2 small, or 1 large drink You will need: • • • • • • • •

1 C. Ice 2 C. Vanilla ice cream 1/2 C. Milk 1/2 tsp. Pumpkin pie spice mix, plus extra for garnish 1/2 tsp. Brown sugar 3 tsp Pumpkin purée 1/4 C. White chocolate Liqueur, such as Godiva (optional) Whipped cream for topping

Putting it together:

In a blender, combined the ice, vanilla ice cream, pumpkin purée, pumpkin pie spice, brown sugar, and white chocolate liqueur and blend until smooth, roughly between 30 seconds and one minute. Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and top with whipped cream and a dash of pie spice.

Three generations of golfers

Looking Ahead By Lynne Harrosh, Resident since 2008

L

earning to play golf has changed the way I connect with people. I did not understand the value of knowing the game of golf until I learned how to play nearly 4 years ago. It has opened up the door to conversations with people I would not normally have connected with in the past. It has activated my athletic and competitive spirit, which, for a long time, I have funneled through my children and the sports they play. I have a new appreciation for my parents and their athletic abilities, which often spark conversations about all kinds of “golf” topics. Last week, they called with excitement as they won 1st place at a tournament! Bonds are created with people in all facets of your life when you know and play the game of golf. From family to coworkers, golf is a topic that crosses genders, cultures, and ages. Realizing how impactful golf can be in so many facets of one’s life, I bought my son a great set of clubs for his high school graduation.

He had taken a few lessons when he was little, and recently we have played together a few times. Well, finally it happened! He called and said, “Mom, guess what? I signed up for a golf tournament!” My hopes are that these golf clubs will be a gift that keeps on giving. May he use them in good health, happiness and prosperity! My heart is happy!!

SRVHS Football

SRVHS Wolves Hit the Field By Ricky Helton, Resident since 2004

“All eyes on me!” Tupac Shakir said it best. That being said all eyes are on SRVHS’s Varsity Football team. With a goal of State in their sights, their record as of today is 1-1 and their cross town nemesis, MVHS, is 2-0. These two Danville schools go head to head in the last game of the season. This could be a clash of the titans, but let’s just settle down a bit and enjoy the journey. With fans in the stands and Wolves students cheering the loudest in the student area, I’ve heard it’s going to be a fun season. I’ve witnessed the roster turnover and it’s still stacked with talent. A couple athletes I would like to mention are Tyler Hoffman, #88, who had 5 QB sacks in the game vs. O’Dowd. The defensive line is a force to be reckoned with. The strength of the offensive line, which is anchored by senior, Jackson Brown, #77, who moves the pocket and is doubled at times, is a driving player on the offense. But neither of these players would be mentioned above if it wasn’t for them and their teammates playing as a team. Friday Night Lights is back. Enjoy the journey. Let’s gooooooooo!

A Place Unlike Any Other: Enjoy Cypress Lawn’s Internationally Accredited Arboretum By Robert A. Gordon Jr., President & CEO of Cypress Lawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Resident since 2017

T

he legacy of Cypress Lawn’s Memorial Park can be traced back over 100 years ago to our founder, Hamden Holmes Noble. At that time, city officials of San Francisco passed a law essentially “evicting” the dead from city limits. Real estate was in hot demand — which may feel akin to today’s housing market — and many community members didn’t want cemeteries taking up valuable space in the city. During a pivotal carriage ride, Noble’s friend pointed out an existing cemetery that was in extensive disrepair and insisted he find a solution. Noble knew there had to be a better way and began researching the rural and lawn park cemeteries along the East Coast. To create a similar aesthetic on the West Coast, Noble planted many trees, some of which are still alive today. These are part of the living wonders of our Arboretum collection, featuring over 100 species and nearly 3,000 individual trees.

It was an honor for Cypress Lawn to receive Level I Arboretum accreditation from Morton Arboretum’s international ArbNet program. Our Arboretum includes a diverse collection of trees from all over the world — every continent except Antarctica. Our Arboretum Director, Josh Gevertz, recently launched in-person Tree Tours to allow guests the opportunity to explore and learn more about the origin and history of the many trees found at Cypress Lawn. But our passion isn’t just about the current state of our trees — we’re also planning for the next 100 years. Josh and his team are working to ensure the preservation, restoration, and curation of every tree located across our multiple campuses. Sometime this fall, we hope you’ll take time to visit Cypress Lawn’s Arboretum to pause, exhale, and reflect upon what’s most important. Trees are powerful symbols of renewal, and we believe Cypress Lawn is a place where both the young and old can appreciate their beauty while savoring life.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Adoptable Pets Submitted by Sue James, TVAR

Banjo

Our little Banjo has had such a difficult time but hopefully things are looking up for this bundle of love. Banjo was running loose for days and days - until some dedicated volunteers caught him. Covered in dangerous foxtails, he was rushed to an Emergency Vet so the foxtails didn’t do more damage. After veterinarian care for other issues, Banjo is healthy and ready to go to his new forever home. TVAR gives deserving animals like Banjo another chance by taking them into foster care. All TVAR dogs live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting- allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public. For more information see our website: www.tvar.org

Firebird

Firebird is a 5 ½ month old orange tabby male. Firebird is a spunky go-getter who can be seen zooming past you as he looks for his favorite toy to knock around. This curious boy would love to find a wonderful forever home with someone who would enjoy play time as much as he does. TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating just short of 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes

ave you seen the new coffee place downtown? If you thought it was a new café, you wouldn’t be the first. But it’s actually much more than that! Owner Michael Fernandes says, “We want to be a one-stop shop for all coffee needs in our community. A customer who walks into our shop can purchase coffee equipment, schedule repairs and purchase our locally roasted coffee.” Michael and Lilia Fernandes developed Goat Racer Coffee Co. with Arian Hamidi, who I had the pleasure of sitting with and learning all about the coffee roasting process. Michael first discovered a taste for coffee when he worked as a barista at Starbucks in high school. He has since made it his career and passion, opening his own company fixing coffee machines in 2010. “An opportunity came up a few years ago when [Arian] informed us that he would be moving to the US. We knew about his coffee roasting experience in Germany and thought we could work together to roast coffee here in the US.” Once in the store, there’s plenty to see: the espresso machines are beautiful and the scent of fresh coffee will instantly energize you. I certainly consider myself an amateur coffee drinker, but I so enjoyed learning about all the different levels of roasting from Arian. Black coffee can be so flavorful when done well. I know Goat Racer Coffee Co. has big plans and we’re excited to see where they take their business! Goat Racer Coffee Co. 281 Hartz Avenue Monday-Thursday 8-2pm www.goatracercoffeeco.com

Fat Transfer: Don’t Get Rid of it, Put it Somewhere Else By Dr. Stephen J. Ronan MD FACS, Blackhawk Plastic Surgery and MedSpa

F

at transfer, also known as “fat grafting”, is the surgical process when fat is taken from one area of the body and transplanted into another area, usually one where volume is lacking or the patient desires more volume. This safe, longlasting, well-tolerated procedure produces very natural-looking results. Every year, thousands of people undergo successful fat grafting and are pleased with the outcome.

sometimes we have patients who want to address other areas of their body. There are two primary reasons why people come to us for a fat transfer consultation. The first is to enlarge and add volume to an area, most often buttocks or breasts. The second is to improve the appearance of the face, either with other facial surgery or by itself. Loss of fat is the primary cause of facial aging so you can imagine the popularity of the procedure.

Turn on the Green Light (When You Realize Something More is Possible) By Christina Dalton, MS, PPS, PCC, EYH Life Coach

“I

t’s no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then” - Alice In Wonderland

As we journey through this wonderful thing called life, we come to realize that each person has a unique set of skills and gifts. Yet, it seems that after a time, we lose the key and keep locked the full potential of who we are. You know that feeling. “Really, is this all there is?”, “Could I do more?”, “Why do I feel so incomplete?” It is that feeling that comes with time and transition. It shows up with a divorce, death of a loved one, becoming an empty nester. It is the acknowledgement that one’s career and personal goals really are not very fulfilling. So how do you reflect the person you were meant to be and that you have envisioned in the rear view mirror? The Alice in Wonderland quote characterizes how the journey with a credentialed coach is very different from hiring a therapist, counselor, mentor or consultant. The coaching partnership is about forward movement and can provide the tools necessary to bring that vision back to life and express the unique skills, gifts of who you are. In therapy and counseling, the practitioner counsels their client to relieve or heal a disorder, often exploring the past with the client. In consulting or mentoring, the client is advised on what to do to solve their problems. A well trained, credentialed life coach, unlike the above helping professionals, partners with the client to empower full potential directed towards the future. The client explores their capabilities and what is possible. This partnership welcomes who you are now while allowing for an exploration to evaluate the “red lights” you have put on yourself that prevent and stand in the way of your ability to achieve your full potential. This creates the framework for what is possible for you to evaluate who you want to be in your relationships and career. You are switching the stops - the “red lights” - to the green “go ahead” lights. A powerful coaching session affords the client the means to turn the “green light” on. All those dreams that were left on the table are rekindled providing a more complete and satisfying life. What’s most important in your coaching session is that you are the driver! What an opportunity to unlock your deepest passions in both your personal and professional goals! Don’t wait for others to provide you with that “green light”. Be empowered to turn it on yourself! A well qualified coach can, with insightful questions, partner to bring out your passions, goals and dreams for a more exciting life. The best is yet to come. Don’t live in the past version of yourself. You have the opportunity now to fulfill who you want to be, to hit only green lights. Sure, you may need to map out the journey you want to take, so EYHLifeCoach invites you to share your thoughts and to take a half hour complimentary trip to explore what is possible, to rekindle those dreams and to move forward towards the best life ever. Happy Travels! Christina Dalton is the Principal of EYH Life Coach. She applies her own personal and career transitions along with several degrees and credentials to provide insight and knowledge into the coaching experience. Christina handpicks her staff, all of whom are ICF credentialed and have unique experiences to create invaluable coaching sessions. 30

Holiday Jewelry Trends for 2021:

Maximalism! By Steve Padis, Padis Jewelry and The Forevermark Boutique at Broadway Plaza

I

s it just us, or do jewelry trends keep getting better and better? It makes sense when you think about it. At this point in the pandemic, our wardrobes have reached new levels of pared down, and jewelry has stepped up to instantly elevate nearly every work-from-home look. Though the fall/winter collections offer a glimmer of hope that fashion will liven up again in due time, jewelry cements its place as the head-turner of our future fall outfits. While past seasons focused on minimalist pieces (think: dainty layered necklaces), this fall, it’s all about the drama. We’re talking about bling that’s fit for an extravaganza, oversize and chunky adornments seemingly mined from the closet of Cleopatra herself. When it comes to pretty baubles, the message of the fall/winter 2021 runways is clear: let’s bring back the fun. Ahead, see the five biggest jewelry trends to know (and wear) this fall. Because we could all use something to look forward to.

Mix It Up

If there’s a surefire way to incorporate an element of surprise into your outfit with minimal effort, what could be better than (literally) mixing it up? Whether you’re mixing and matching earrings or simply combining contrasting colors, when it comes to this trend, there really are no rules!

Pearly & Fringe Delights

This season, designers threw not-so-subtle hints at anyone who’s still in denial that pearls are absolutely back. Throughout the runway shows, pearl earrings embellished with crystal fringe details were paired with layers of matching necklaces. Fringed layers of dangly crystals and pearls may have been absent from your wardrobe for some time now, but expect a triumphant return come fall. Call it boho chic.

Big-Time Bling

This season, it was impossible not to notice the downright in-your-face quality of the jewelry (so we meet again, maximalism!). From oversize studs to larger-than-life pendants, the overall statement on runways this season was to, well, make a statement.

Garden Party

Let’s carry a little spring into the fall, shall we? Floral elements blossomed across the fall/winter 2021 runways, some overtly garden-like, others slightly more discreet. At Simone Rocha, there were flowers printed on pearls alongside beaded flower earrings (stems and all). Badgley Mischka, on the other hand, presented a decidedly more classic floral stud. Take your pick!

Chain Reaction

The chain-link trend continues to dominate for fall/winter 2021, but with a slight twist. Whereas previous seasons featured ultra-chunky links, this time around, designers are showing range with dainty chains, mix-and-matched sizes, and colorblock iterations. Now that you’re fully prepped on the season’s best trends, you’re ready to start your holiday wish list or pick out the perfect gift! Head on over to any Padis Jewelry location

and our consultants will be happy to help you pick out the perfect gift! Our team at Padis is here and ready to help with all of your holiday shopping needs both in our stores and on our website at padisjewelry.com.
