Hello Neighbors!

Feeling spooky yet? Halloween in Danville is such an amazing time! Of course we love being here year round, but there’s something about holidays in a small town that just hit differently. I can’t wait to see all the kids in their costumes at various activities around town! My favorite is the school costume parade!

On our cover this month is the Wollesen Family. This busy Danville family recently opened Sliver Pizzeria right on the corner of Railroad. We hope you enjoy learning about them and all the joy they bring to their friends and neighbors. Meet the Wollesen Family

Brooke and Will Wollesen both attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. It was there, when they lived in the same apartment building, that they met. Funny enough, Will actually dated Brooke’s roommate for a short time. But of course, the chips always fall as they should, and Will and Brooke began their beautiful life together!

The Wollesens have four children, Daenan, 22, Davis, 20, Haley, 16, and Sadie, 12. Since Brooke grew up in Pleasanton and Will grew up in Saratoga, moving back to the Bay Area to raise their family was a non-negotiable. Three years ago they moved into their westside Danville home and have loved every minute of it!

The Wollesens live behind The Livery, so shopping and great restaurants are just steps away. They love being so close to schools, programs, and plenty of other things to do for anyone interested in getting out of the house for a bit.

At BYU, Brooke earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Family Science. Her full time career has been raising the kids. She is now a part time fitness instructor, leading a High Fitness class at I Can Do That Performing Arts Center and Fitness 19 in downtown Danville.

Will graduated BYU with his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. From there he attended Santa Clara University to get his JD, all while working full time at a tax and financial advisory firm. “Will has spent the last eight years at Hall Law Group, LLP in Pleasanton where he is a Partner and focuses his practice on estate planning, tax and business needs of highnet-worth individuals.”

Recently Will ventured into the restaurant business as a co-owner of Sliver Pizzeria just off Railroad ave. Check them out for original recipes, unique and delicious toppings, and so much more!

Together Brooke and Will both enjoy being active. They’ve brought their kids along for the ride and taught all four kids how to wakeboard and wakesurf. Will is a big fan of running, often right through town! Everyone in the Wollesen house loves the Bay Area teams - Giants, Warriors and the 49ers. Haley takes the cake, however, “Haley is Steph Curry’s biggest fan and can often be caught watching Steph Curry highlights on YouTube.”

Each year everyone migrates to the beach for some R and R with the extended family. The kids’ grandparents live right by the water, so it’s the perfect getaway spot filled with fun memories for everyone.

Daenen and Davis are both attending BYU after each having served a twoyear church mission, Daenen in Denver Colorado and Davis in Antofagasta, Chile. They both enjoy all sports, but you can find Daenen on the basketball court and Davis on the soccer pitch in their free time.

“Haley has Down Syndrome and is active in the Down Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area right near where we live in the Town and Country [shopping center]. She does a peer class and participates in Dancing Without Limits and Beyond Hoops through the Connection. Haley is also a varsity cheerleader at SRVHS this year! She loves to dance and play soccer with Mustangs.” We can’t wait to see you out on the field, Haley!

Sadie and Brooke are part of the mother-daughter charity group, National Charity League. Sadie says, “You can start in 7th grade and continue until you graduate high school.” Through NCL, you work right here in the Diablo area, getting involved in the communities and learning about philanthropy.

For Brooke, bringing people together comes second nature. Each August the whole neighborhood joins the Wollesens for an annual outdoor concert. “Anyone can perform and share their talents and it’s one of the best nights of the year,” says Brooke. When the weather cools down a bit and the holiday sweet teeth kick in, you can find Brooke hosting a cookie exchange party. Neighbors make the best friends and judges in this case, and they’re happy to taste test everything and to hand out the prizes for best cookie!

A reader favorite is, of course, the featured family’s “words to live by”. Will and Brooke work diligently to instill in their children “We Can Do Hard Things” - a fitting statement that everyone can benefit from.

A Pain Free Night’s Sleep

One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “What type of pillow should I use?” or “Which mattress should I get?” In answer to these questions I usually ask my own question. “What type of sleeper are you?” Your next question here is, “Well which way is the right way to sleep?” The answer to this is, “whichever way works best for you.” Generally speaking there is no right or wrong sleep position. But, If you wake up every morning with neck or back pain then it might be time to take a look at your sleep situation.

Back Sleepers

This is the one most people assume is the “correct” way to sleep. If you are a back sleeper here are the easiest simple tips for success. Firmer is better when it comes to mattresses for back sleepers. The pillow for back sleepers is what is termed a ‘cervical pillow’, this means that it should have a cervical dip in it to provide support to your neck. You don’t want a pillow that goes flat or a stack of pillows that props you up too high.

Side Sleepers

Side sleeping is the most popular position. The secret for side sleepers is to keep their spine neutral and to provide stability. Mattress can be any level of firmness just make sure your spine is able to stay straight

when side lying. There is no need for a special pillow, all it needs to do is keep your head in a neutral position. This is achieved best by a dense foam that doesn’t lose its shape as the night goes on. For smaller individuals many companies will offer “teen” or “child” size pillows that might fit better.

Stomach Sleepers

Everyone assumes this is the “wrong” way to sleep. Stomach sleeping isn’t inherently bad. The secret to successful stomach sleeping is actually to sleep with no pillow at all. This allows your neck to be neutral, which is the goal of all sleeping positions.

A pain free night’s sleep is about making sure you have the right pillow and mattress. Just like a pain free day at work is about the right ergonomics.

Building Trusting Relationships, Part 1

The reality is that the majority of employees spend more time at work than in their personal lives. If you are in a supportive, healthy, and growth minded environment, your job can be empowering and fulfilling. Who you are in the workplace becomes a defining factor of your identity. But, if your job limits you, does not allow you to grow and has become unfulfilling due to an unhealthy environment, it might be time to learn and apply communication tools to create a place you want to be at everyday.

According to a recent Gallup poll, only 13% of employees feel their company’s leadership communicates effectively. This ineffective communication cannot only be frustrating but is a major cause of poor job performance. In a comprehensive survey from Economist Intelligence Unit, respondents were affected in the following ways:

• 44 percent said it caused delays or failures in completing projects

• 31 percent believed it contributed to low morale

• 25 percent reported missed performance goals

• 18 percent cited lost sales

If your management team or boss communicates poorly, the employee morale will be affected. Directly, job performance will also suffer. However, to express your concerns to someone above you, can be tricky.

To best communicate with your immediate boss, it is best to first understand them and their communication style. Here are a few reasons your boss may be an ineffective communicator:

1. The boss is new to the company or their position and lacks confidence. Whether a person is promoted within or hired new, they will lack the expertise of the new role. The manager may feel overwhelmed and therefore, lacks the ability to fully communicate as they develop their own niche.

2. The boss is an introvert and has a difficult time communicating. Understanding how to work with an introvert can be a challenge. Who do you need to be to support this type of personality?

3. Your boss lacks clarity and direction when communicating. This, to me, may be the hardest personality to work with. The person may run an hour long meeting, yet you are leaving the meeting more confused than when it started. You walk away with nothing.

4. The boss is too busy and offers little or no time with you. This could be a company organizational issue, or it could be your boss’s issue in dealing with priorities and time management.

5. The boss provides information overload in communicating with no clarity or direction. If you are leaving conversations and meetings feeling overwhelmed, then this may be the real issue. What tools can you bring into the conversations to organize and prioritize what is important?

The above are examples, but far from all the possibilities. Everyone has an individual story. If you can relate to any of the above employer personality types, there are several coaching strategies to develop and empower you in the workplace. May I invite you to create an environment where you are valued and of which you value? New CASA Tutor Program

to Benefit Local Children in Foster Care

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Contra Costa County is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, and supports volunteer advocates as a powerful voice for the best interest of abused and neglected children living in foster care during the court process, in order to help every child ultimately thrive in a safe, stable, and permanent home.

As we celebrate our 41st year of serving the children and youth in our community, we are excited to share the launch of our new CASA Tutor Program. As you can imagine, children and youth in foster care face many additional academic hurdles. Finding ongoing, quality academic support at no cost can be a challenge, so we are taking a big step to help fill that need. We’d love for you to join us!

CASA Tutors will provide consistent and accessible educational support to children in grades TK-12 who are already working with one of our CASA Volunteer Advocates. They will assist with homework and learning concepts in a supportive, trauma informed environment and help students reach their educational goals, build their confidence, and feel supported as they navigate through their school years.

We are filling our first CASA Tutor training cohort and are looking for volunteers who want to make a lasting difference in the lives of local children who have been abused or neglected.

Tri-Valley Animal RescueGiving them another chance

Kira and Roddy

Kira and Roddy were part of a litter of 4 puppies who we took into foster when they were about 7-8 weeks old. While their two siblings have been adopted, Roddy and Kira are still looking for their forever homes. They are bonded so well that we would like to see them go to a home together. They are both super smart, quick learners who both love to shower kisses - and love affection in return. Kira is the alpha dog but is totally devoted to her brother. Roddy, in turn, adores his sister. Both love to run and play and seek out new adventures - with Kira being the lookout leader. The two love to spend their days together cuddling, playing and bantering. They are fixed, microchipped and current on their vaccinations, flea treatment and deworming.

All of TVAR’s foster dogs and pups like Roddy and Kira live in foster homes till adopted. Foster families get to know each dog’s personality and needs in a home setting - allowing TVAR to find the right match so dogs and adopters thrive!

Unity & Uravity

Uravity and Unity are two tortoiseshell sisters who were brought into a Tri-Valley Animal Rescue Foster home when they were about 7 weeks old. Unity has always been the outgoing sister, while Uravity has taken patience and love to coax out of her shell. Unity and Uravity are Calicivirus survivors. Their foster mom doted on them day and night, providing supportive care of subcutaneous fluids, medications, and syringe feeding during the several weeks they took to recover from the virus. They are both very healthy and happy now and looking for their forever home. Unity and Uravity love and compliment each other very well and would love to be adopted together into a home with canine friends for them to play with. They have both been spayed, microchipped, and tested negative for FIV and FELV. They are current on their vaccinations, flea treatment, and deworming.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes.

Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance

TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs.

All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted.

We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public.

How to Overcome HVAC Challenges

You don’t want to ignore problems, but you also don’t want to call in a professional for something you can handle on your own. As the owner and user of your HVAC equipment, you are in a position to compare how it’s acting up versus how it should behave. Here are some tips for approaching HVAC issues to overcome challenges.

Identifying the problem: Look for patterns

One of the first steps in solving a problem is identifying it. When it comes to your HVAC equipment, you live with it on an ongoing basis. You know how it operates when everything in your home is comfortable and functioning. Use this baseline knowledge to find patterns that could indicate issues. For example, your cooling might be sufficient on most days but lacking when the temperature is extreme. If this has always been the case, you can consider upgrading to a larger system. If this is a recent issue, it may indicate a problem with the unit’s performance. Knowledge of the baseline will help you and an HVAC technician determine what the next step could be.

Pay attention to how you use your system

Do you crank up your heating or cooling to the max and leave it there when you’re not at home? Or do you constantly adjust the temperature, turning it up and down to always ensure you’re perfectly comfortable at all times? Depending on how you use your HVAC system, certain issues are more likely. This information is useful for a technician reviewing your system as it paints a picture of the conditions that your equipment experiences through use.

Look for easy solutions first

When things go wrong, it can be tempting to assume the worst and overreact. Sometimes the best solution is the simplest. Review basic maintenance items first. If you notice that your heating isn’t what it should be or the airflow through your grilles is slow, look at your filter. Are you overdue on its replacement? If your system isn’t responding to temperature changes, inspect your thermostat to see if there are loose wires or if the batteries need to be replaced.

Know when to call for help

Knowing when to call for professional help is key. The more you know about your equipment, the easier it will be for you to judge whether you have a small problem that can wait or whether to call for help immediately. Ongoing maintenance and open communication with the right HVAC professionals will help you get there.

thinking about) the topic of death, we all encounter the grief, pain, and confusion that comes with losing someone special. When a family member or friend dies, so much in our culture tells us to move on — and fast. But movies like Coco remind us that grief cannot be rushed.

There’s tremendous value in remembering those who have died and there are ways to feel close to them long after they’re gone. There are tangible traditions like displaying photos of loved ones along with their prized possessions and telling stories to keep memories from fading.

We

host many events here at Cypress Lawn — from tours of our world-class Arboretum to lecture series, flag retirement ceremonies, Memorial Day celebrations, and more.

One event we remember with fondness happened back in 2019 when hundreds of people of all ages joined us on a Saturday night to watch an outdoor showing of the Disney/Pixar movie Coco. The story follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who is accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead. The message highlights the importance of remembering those we love — something that is always on our minds as we help families honor the special people they’ve lost.

Eyebrow Transplant and Restoration

Eyebrows are a major facial feature that help define a person’s face. They make a huge difference in your overall appearance. In addition to protecting the eyes, eyebrows frame the face and help you communicate better through facial expressions.

Many individuals suffer from thin or transparent eyebrows from over-plucking, genetic loss through the aging process, or because they were just born with thin, or even non-existent eyebrows. Fortunately, the science of hair restoration has evolved significantly over the last several years and now there are many new and innovative technologies and procedures available, including eyebrow transplant and restoration.

An eyebrow transplant is an excellent option for both men and women who want to fill in, restore or reshape their eyebrows. With our help, patients can choose between a complete or partial brow transplant depending on their aesthetic goals and severity of their hair loss. And because eyebrow anatomy varies from person to person, there are other factors to consider, including cultural background and norms, gender, and other facial features.

Eyebrow length, arch height, and thickness are additional factors that can affect brow aesthetics. Generally, for women the optimal eyebrow is above the superior orbital rim and thins laterally. The peak of its arch is in line with the lateral limbus of the eye. For men, the optimal brow is typically more horizontal than arched. It is also generally thicker, and placement is usually lower than that of the female brow.

In most cases, an eyebrow transplant procedure takes four to six hours to complete. The procedure is conducted in our private hair restoration center under local anesthetic. Hairs are transplanted one by one from a donor area, which is usually the back of the head, to the eyebrow to address thinning, scarred, misshaped or missing eyebrows. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is done on an outpatient basis. Each patient’s recovery after an eyebrow transplant varies. Temporary swelling is common and some patients can experience a little redness and puffiness around their eyes for a few days after the procedure.

The Town of Danville is pleased to present a new art exhibit:

Imagine That An Eclectic Collection of Modern Abstract Paintings Featuring local Artist Group, Beyond the Brush

For its autumn exhibit, the Village Theatre Art Gallery is pleased to host the painting group Beyond the Brush, comprised of local artists Jane Corich, Irene Desmond, Jan Foulds, Lynn Glen, Judy Hirabayshi, JoAnn Lieberman, Roberta Milstead, Jeanie Moran and Q Stone. The all-women artist group, based in the East Bay, meets monthly to offer support of each other’s artistic growth through mentoring and collaborative critiques. For this exhibit, the artists created paintings inspired by Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. It is understood that this important work of music by Beethoven was in part inspired by his reading and interpretation of the poem Ode to Joy written by Friedrich Schiller in the late seventeen-hundreds. Beyond the Brush artists carry on the tradition of artists being inspired by artists in the newest art exhibit at the Village Theatre Art Gallery, Imagine That! Gallery goers can expect to see paintings that are

meant to evoke the emotions of joy. The exhibit showcases paintings that are meant to be a convergence of the poem, the music and the power of color, texture, and imagery of paint and a brush. Music by Beethoven will be played at the reception to create mood and insight into the connection between the music and artwork.

Exhibit dates are October 20-December 16, 2022 with an artists’ opening reception on Thursday, October 20 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Complimentary refreshments will be served and as always, there is no admission cost to attend and donations are always appreciated. Open to the public.

Roasted Cauliflower Crumble

Not gonna lie, I don’t really love cauliflower. However, I really love this dish, and you will too. I have been a vegetable worshiper my entire life, but cauliflower never impressed me, until today. This warm gorgeous masterpiece on a plate is sweet and savory, but also crunchy and creamy with a bright kick. This would look stunning at the Thanksgiving table, or all by itself for a vegetarian entrée.

Serves: 4

Time: 1 hour

You will Need

• 1 head cauliflower

• 1 bulb whole garlic

• 1 C. walnuts or pecans

• 3 C. arugula

• 1/2 C. of dates,

• Zest from one lemon

• 1/2 C. of crumbled feta cheese

• 1/3 C. olive oil, divided

• Salt and pepper to taste

Putting it together:

Preheat the oven to 375°. Separate the cauliflower into florets, making sure the pieces are not too small. Place them on a baking sheet and drizzle with half of the olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Using a sharp knife, slice off of the top half of the garlic bulb, so that the garlic is barely exposed. Place it on the baking sheet next to the cauliflower and drizzle with olive oil. Roast the garlic and cauliflower for 30-35 minutes or until the garlic is golden brown. Remove the cauliflower to a serving dish and allow the garlic to slightly cool. Using a cutting board, roughly chop the dates and nuts together, then incorporate the arugula and feta cheese. Using a folded paper towel, pick up the garlic bulb and squeeze out the roasted garlic onto the cauliflower and give it a light mix. Handle it very carefully because it may still be very hot and sticky.

Top the cauliflower with the date, nut and arugula mixture. Finally, zest a fresh lemon over the top before serving.

What is Cash Flow?

Cash flow does not equal profit. You can evaluate your profit (or loss) with your P&L statement, but this brief snapshot leaves out essential information. Cash flow is simply how much money flows in and out of a business.

Cash flow management is tracking, managing, and analyzing the money that comes in (sales) and goes out of a business (purchases and other expenses). This can include cash and non-cash income and expenses–payroll, rent, utilities, taxes, and loan repayments. Positive cash flow is when a business has more money coming in than going out, and negative cash flow is when more money is going out than coming in.

Why is Cash Flow Management Important?

Cash flow is truly the driving force of a business, financially. If your bills are due at the beginning of the month, but your business doesn’t receive money until the end of the month, there is a cash flow problem. Learning to improve cash flow takes time, patience, and the tools to help you understand the complexities of managing your money.

Strong cash flow management skills can help small businesses know when to grow, how to predict future cash flow problems, and how to avoid them. A cash flow analysis can provide entrepreneurs with a solid understanding of where and when money is moving and how to improve the business’s overall cash flow. This analysis can help you decide when to grow, expand staffing, and make (or pause) large purchases.

How to Improve Cash Flow

Some businesses simply need to adjust payment dates for expenses, create strong policies for receiving income (including when late fees are applied, what forms of payment are accepted, etc.), and other tweaks to improve cash flow. Others might need some additional guidance to reach their goals, especially in the early stages of a business when there isn’t extra cash to buffer unpredictable income. In many cases, you may need to reduce operating expenses.

ARF Helps Betty Heal

– Inside and Out

When officers from a municipal animal shelter just outside Redding, California first met Betty, she desperately needed help. The 3-year-old American Staffordshire Terrier mix had been neglected and was heavily pregnant, yet her soft tail wag indicated she knew she was safe now. Just a few days later, Betty gave birth to four puppies at that shelter’s facility. But while safer than having them on the street as a stray, crowded shelters put vulnerable, underage puppies at high risk for contracting life-threatening illnesses.

To protect the puppies, this shelter called Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation for help. ARF’s rescue team brought the entire family back for evaluation and placed them in a loving, volunteer foster home where the puppies could grow up strong

and healthy. Once old enough to be adopted, all of Betty’s puppies quickly found loving homes.

However, Betty needed extra time to find the right fit. She is very intelligent, loves to cuddle, and tires out quickly with a game of fetch, but when she first arrived, she pulled on her leash and overreacted on walks when she saw another dog. ARF’s expert behavior team immediately started dedicating time to training Betty using positive reinforcement techniques to improve her physical and behavioral health.

Paired with the consistent efforts of our wonderful foster volunteers, Betty has shown significant improvement and now enjoys walking with well-matched canine friends, in addition to the humane ones she’s always adored. She has come a long

way and is an excellent representation of dogs who need support and direction to learn how to enjoy life. Yet despite the great strides she’s made, Betty has been in ARF’s care for more than 365 days – and is still looking for a loving home.

Betty’s adoption includes a training package valued at over $500. The package includes several training items, like treats and food puzzles, plus four private consultations, up to one hour each, with ARF’s Behavior and Training team. Plus, her adoption fee has been prepaid by a generous donor!
