Meet the Hoffman Family

Ryan stayed true to his punk roots and following school he toured all across North America with Social Distortion and the Descendents. When he grew tired of the grind that touring and living on the road takes, he entered the sales and marketing world. He is currently the Regional Sales Manager for Zoll Itamar.

Avery is entering TK this year. She’s always loved watching Miles play ball and luckily for her, he loves to teach her! They’ve been practicing together and Avery is just about ready for the big leagues. This year she’ll also start soccer and swimming at Del Amigo, where the whole family loves to gather with friends during the summer.

As next door neighbors in San Francisco, Ryan Hoffman and Melanie Mesch got the chance to meet and get to know each other on their four-plex’s large shared balcony. It was on that very balcony that they learned about their mutual love of music, made tons of friends together, and partied for hours!

8 SEPTEMBER 2022 Resident Feature

Back in 2016, as Miles was approaching kindergarten, Melanie and Ryan decided to leave San Francisco and move here to Danville. It was an easy pick as Melanie’s family has tons of connections to the area. Her mother, Christine, was SRVUSD’s Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for 15 years and is now the VP for the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation. Her stepfather, Mike Williams, taught at Danville Music for over 40 years! And her younger sister Rebecca, has taught at both Sycamore and Green Valley Elementary Schools.

“We were very familiar with the area and the amazing school district, and we knew

Of course, when music is part of your soul, it can’t be totally left behind. Ryan partnered with Sony Music and together they own Quiet Panic, “a record label and artist management collective, which launches music and manages emerging Togetherartists.” Ryan and Melanie have two awesome kids. Miles, sixth grade, has grown up surrounded by his parents’ passions and has come to love music just as much. He was even featured in a music video for one of the bands Ryan’s team manages - you can check it out online - “Alternative Rock” by Beach Slang. Miles loves playing baseball with Danville Little League. He’s been playing since 2016 and the whole family adores all the lasting friendships they’ve made with the other baseball families.

During her early years of college at Chico State, Melanie had her own radio show at the University Radio Station, KCSC Radio. She then transferred to San Francisco State where she earned her degree in Business with a minor in Music. After college, life took her around the world, even so far as Scotland, before she came back to the Bay Area. Here in the 680 stretch, Melanie worked for SRVUSD in the Facilities and the Child Nutrition Departments, before stepping aside to be home with the kids.

Even after dating for a while, Ryan was able to surprise Melanie when he casually mentioned that he had played guitar in a punk rock band, Chain of Strength, in the 90’s. In a true twist, it was a band she had seen play frequently at 924 Gilman, an old Bay Area venue where big names like Green Day and Rancid played too. They quickly figured out that they were probably at a lot of the same shows over the years! Five years later, they got married at the Hidden Valley Institute of the Arts in Carmel Valley. These days Melanie and Ryan are still actively enjoying their love of music and concerts and bringing their two kids, Miles and Avery, along for the ride too!

It’s no surprise that Ryan and Melanie live by “music brings us together” - even the nearby extended family joins in, “when we all get together, the instruments come out and it is a songfest. Every holiday the children and their cousins perform on their pianos, guitar, and ukuleles for the Itfamily.”won’t be long until we see Miles jamming on his red electric guitar with Avery, and her someday pink electric guitar, right beside him. Rock on!

that it would be a great place to raise our kids when they were school age…When we first drove out to look at the house on a quiet little cul-de-sac, we saw the neighborhood kids darting around the front yards playing hide and go seek, we immediately knew this was the community for our family.” One of the family’s favorite traditions is volunteering at Atria Assisted Living, “The children are quite a hit during the holidays as Miles plays and Avery passes out the shakers and jingle bells to the delighted audience so they can play along. COVID shut down visitations for a while, but now that they are allowing visitors again, they have been asked to come back to entertain.”

Each year the whole extended family, even their 94-year-old great grandma, travels to Pacific Grove for a week. “The 13 of us have a blast spending time on the beach, playing games at night, cooking together, and of course, bringing out the instruments and performing. We have made lots of wonderful memories there.”

The Spillman brothers were born in Sierra Leone, a country on the southwest coast of West Africa where 53% of the population makes less than $1.25 per day. There was never a thought of pursuing an education at an American university. This changed in 2013. Nate and Edwin, who were 8 and 7 years old respectively at the time, were able to come to the United States through a missionary orphanage program. On August 7 a team of 14 boys from Danville and Alamo became the World Champions at the Little League Intermediate World Series. The journey began in February as the Diablo Kings Little League team played their regular season, led by Head Coach Matt Hill. In the regular season they lost their first game. The players, most of who play on travel ball teams during the off-season, were not used to the Intermediate sized field used for their age level, which is between a Little League sized field and a regular sized field. The team had some work to do, and they worked hard. They finished the regular season 10-2, averaging about 14 runs each game. Then in June the post season began, and the team, which had been made up of 12 Danville 13-year-olds from all over Danville, was able to add 2 more players who both came from Alamo. They became the District 57 champions, after playing a double-elimination style tournament against other Bay Area All-star Theteams.Intermediate 50/70 World Series, which has been in existence since 2013, takes place in Livermore, CA and consists of six U.S. teams and six international teams. After a week of games that began on July 31, the Danville team made it to the top of the U.S. division by beating Hawaii 5-0. South Korea beat Puerto Rico in the International Division final game, setting the stage for Danville and South Korea to play for the “Ourtitle.

Matt Hill, Head Coach added, “We set out to shock the world, and that’s exactly what these young men did. They seized their moment in the spotlight. Every big moment they were ready and never wilted under the lights. I think that reflects the personality and heart of this town, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Gavin McMillan added, “It was really fun making new friends with people from international places like South Korea, Australia, Netherlands and even Curaçao.

In a true show of sportsmanship, the boys celebrated their win with the kids from the other teams. Davis Lynch said, “a highlight was dancing with the South Korea team in the hotel courtyard after the game.”

Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses Danville scored one run in each of the first four innings against a really tough South Korea pitcher. Then in the 6th inning South Korea had a 2-run home run. At that point in the tournament, Danville had only given up two runs all week. But in the end, Danville won the game 5-2. “We scored runs in lots of creative ways; we pitched well and played amazing defense,” said Lynch.

“It was a great experience and one that I won’t forget,” echoed Preston Pera.

Summer’s not yet over! There’s still plenty of time to gather with friends out in the backyard for a hearty plate of beef and some yummy salads. This tritip truly couldn’t be easier. Thanks to the convenience of Ziploc bags, you virtually have no mess to clean up. This recipe is especially great if you have leftover wine sitting around that you need to use up.

Putting it together: Using a 1-gallon Ziploc freezer bag, combine the wine, sugar, soy sauce, ginger and garlic together in the bag. Place the tri-tip in the bag and zip it sealed, Stephanie Seaberg has lived in the East Bay for the last 30 years, and is a SRVHS Alumni. Steph is a play-writer and director for Theater Performance Workshop, KAOS Camp, and Golden Oak Montessori. Steph lives for cooking, theater, photography, travel, and singing. squeeze as much air as possible out. Massage the tri-tip to ensure that it’s coated well. Place it on a plate and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to cook, preheat the oven to 350°. Remove the tri-tip from the bag and place on a roasting pan, but save the marinade. Season with salt and pepper and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how well done you like it and how large your tri-tip is. When it is done, remove it to a carving board and allow it to rest for 10 minutes. While it is resting, pour the marinade from the Ziploc bag into a small saucepan and bring it to a simmer for 10 minutes. Slice up the tri-tip and pour and the marinade reduction over the beef. Goes well with potato salad or pasta salad. Sauvignon Tri-tip

How do extracurriculars fit in the college admissions process? This is an excellent question. Extracurriculars provide the college applicant a competitive edge. As much as 25% of acceptance decisions are decided through the student’s involvement in extracurriculars. The choice of the “right extracurriculars” is decided by you. Your commitment to extracurriculars builds a powerful portfolio. Colleges vary as much as the students who apply for a golden seat at competitive universities. Extracurriculars are a must for college acceptance. To decide the best extracurricular, first ask yourself, “What do you want from your college experience?” This is as critical as your choice of major. Once you have narrowed your areas of interest - sports, theatre, music, student activism or spiritual connections, explore your dedication to your choice. What best extracurriculars will strengthen your odds in the admissions process? Choose what highlights your character, leadership, and enthusiasm. The colleges want depth - growth in your experiences to demonstrate your resilience. If you commit to volunteer service,

Where to start? Define your major and best extracurriculars. If you are a musician, research a campus that continues to develop your talents. Explore outlining cities to further your goals. The college application provides opportunities for you to tell your story. Besides listing extracurricular activities, your essay demonstrates your passion and dedication towards the extracurricular. What did you learn? What level of perseverance pushed you to succeed? If your high school does not offer extracurriculars, develop your extracurriculars through other venues. Almost every sport has traveling teams outside of high school. If your sport is not offered at your school, join teams in the local communities. For example, most California schools do not offer ice hockey. However, competitive traveling ice hockey teams compete outside the high school arena. Create something you love on or off campus to highlight your commitment, your leadership. Make it an opportunity, not a disadvantage. The best extracurriculars define you. Utilize Harvard extracurricular for inspiration. Then dig deep to create your passion. If you, the parent, and your child need a coaching conversation to find inspiration, EYHLifeCoach can partner to discover your extracurricular passions.

contribute every week over a period of time, ideally connected to your major. Volunteerism provides an extra boost against other college applicants. If your major is medicine, explore opportunities in hospitals. The best extracurriculars highlight you. Many colleges, such as Harvard, have hundreds of choices of extracurriculars. If making a move to a local bank has been on your radar, it’s time to make the switch. CBB offers quick decision-making and local knowledge when it comes to lending: our lower banking fees, feefree access to nationwide ATMs makes the choice easy. Stop in to CBB and see why community banking is the best-kept secret in the financial industry.

At CBB, our community continues to come first, especially during rougher times. For example, CBB helped over 650 local small businesses secure Paycheck Protection Program loans during the pandemic. Our PPP team worked around the clock (even on weekends) to secure PPP loans for both clients and non-clients. We even worked on smaller loans, which was certainly “different, on purpose”. In fact, our smallest PPP loan was under $500--we’re told that was unheard of. When CBB said we would turn no one away, we meant it!

By Daniel Fujimoto, Community Bank of the Bay Hi, I’m Daniel Fujimoto from Community Bank of the Bay’s (CBB’s) Danville office.

Big-multinational banks have used their name recognition, lengthy history and the power of spending billions on advertising as the reasons why you should bank with them, but we know there is a better Communityway. banks are gaining momentum with consumers who are looking for something more personal than what megabanks can offer.

Why Bank Locally?

20 SEPTEMBER 2022

Benefits of Banking Locally Reports show that roughly 33% of adults in the US would prefer to bank at a community bank or a credit union rather than a megabank. This is due in part to the fact that local banks employ the people who live in the Historically, community.localbanks are deeply rooted in their communities.

While “big” banks have major financial lending capabilities as stand-alone institutions, many local banks have created a way to work together and provide larger loans to small businesses through collaborative lending.

It’s important to understand that while all megabanks, community banks and credit unions are subject to federal regulations, not all banks prioritize their client’s best interest. Types of Local Banks Community Banks are generally for-profit businesses. Local banking is financially similar to shopping locally. These banks exist to create jobs in their local communities and are stable financial partners for small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations in the communities they serve.

Credit Unions are nonprofit organizations where each customer is a member (which may include some qualifications), and profits are returned to members, usually in the form of lower fees, surchargefree ATM usage, and lower loan rates.

Art & Culture San Damiano's Jazz Festival

If you haven’t been to San Damiano retreat lately….. then you’re missing out.

Tucked away on a secluded hilltop to the far west end of Danville at the very top of Highland Drive is a sleepy retreat that many people know about, but rarely make the trek up the hill to see for themselves. San Damiano is so much more than a place to gain spiritual replenishment. It is also the host of a variety of events, one being the annual Jazz and Wine Festival, which takes place there every July. It is a celebration of music and merriment that leaves your stomach full of good food and a song in your Theheart.festival takes place in San Damiano’s enchanted courtyard, which is surrounded by a bevy of flowers and lush greenery. Staff members gingerly parade through with trays of delicate hors d’oeuvres to try while wine tasting stations hand out heavy pours of oaky chardonnay and fruity zinfandels. Lobster stuffed mushrooms, tomato bruschetta, and savory potato skins are just a few of the delightful finger foods being served. Ron Roncarati overseas the menu at all the events, and prides himself on the farm to table quality of the food. “With the exception of a few ingredients, much of what we served today was grown right here at San Damiano.” Guests were musically delighted by the sultry sounds of the Cooltones, a local band consisting of more than a dozen talented musicians (largely brass instruments) performing everything from classic blues to rock ‘n’ roll. With so much lively entertainment, it was hard to resist jumping out of your seat to dance. Jim Greer is the Director of San Damiano and greeted guests as they arrived. “Folks who come to San Damiano for the Jazz Festival should come to relax in the beauty of our garden, with people who seek spiritual friendship in an open atmosphere of Franciscan peace. Good food, fine wine, beautiful music, and pleasant conversation will be the order of the day!” Reservations are required and tickets are limited, so don’t miss your chance to join the fun next year.

The effects of the sun, pollution, and stress can damage your skin cells, prohibiting the growth of collagen and elastin, the essential components of healthy, glowing, younger looking skin. HydraFacial treatments work by exfoliating damaged cells, hydrating tissues, and cleansing with antioxidants, while peptides and hyaluronic acid revitalize and protect your skin and promote collagen and elastin production.

Just as with traditional facials, your HydraFacial treatment will be personalized based on your skin, so it is going to be different for a teenager with acne than for an older client with sun damage and wrinkles. Before your HydraFacial, one of our expert aestheticians will evaluate the overall condition of your skin, determine your skin’s sensitivity and choose the serum and individualized treatment plan that’s right for Ifyou.you love your HydraFacial, our Beauty Membership plan is a great way to stay on top of your regular beauty regimen and save money in the process. Membership includes a practical monthly subscription plan with special club member pricing. In addition to HydraFacials, membership is also a great way to develop a personalized treatment plan for RHA and Restylane dermal fillers, Dysport injections, and other beauty treatments.

Again, the big world record-breaking HydraFacial event is scheduled for Friday, October 7th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Give us a call at 925-736-5757 if you have any questions. DANVILLE LIVING CA 25Where residents find and recommend the best local, trusted businesses A production of A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O’Neill will be the centerpiece of the 2022 Eugene O’Neill Festival. Eugene O’Neill channeled his final creative energies into facing his family and the hurt he felt at their hands. Of the six plays written at Tao House, no figure emerges more frequently than his older brother Jamie (Jim). He is a pivotal character in the heavily autobiographical Long Day’s Journey Into Night and a model for leading characters in both The Iceman Cometh and Hughie. In A Moon for the Misbegotten, the last play the playwright ever wrote, O’Neill imagined the last days of his estranged brother’s life. With great empathy and humor, he fantasized that Jim encountered the unique and powerful Josie Hogan whose love, acceptance, and sacrifice alleviated his brother’s suffering and allowed him to find a measure of peace at the end of his life. The play helped O’Neill find forgiveness for his brother and a greater understanding of himself. And now, almost 80 years later, the experience of Moon at Tao House is a gift to us all. Tri-Valley Animal Rescue (TVAR) - Giving them Another Chance TVAR is a locally based and volunteer run 501(c)3 animal rescue organization. We assist in saving over 1,000 animals yearly in the Tri-Valley and surrounding areas. We are celebrating 30 years of saving lives with over 250 local volunteers. At TVAR, we rely solely on Public Support to fund our life saving programs. All TVAR’s foster animals go directly from the local Animal Shelter into foster homes where they receive much needed love and socialization and where they are kept until adopted. We also have an invaluable Shelter Program where our volunteers spend countless hours every day at the local shelter working with the Dogs, Puppies, Cats and Kittens and the Public. locations is available on the Town’s website under public art at www.danville.ca.gov/ Participantspicturethis. are encouraged to take a family photo or selfie with a frame and tag @ danville.artgallery and @danvilleparksca using the hashtags

Meet little Jazmine - a sweet and frisky kitten who Gidget and Gadget arrived at the East County Animal Shelter with their sister Gemma when they were only two weeks old. They were immediately taken into TVAR’s bottle baby program where they were bottle-raised in a foster home and then weaned onto wet and dry kitten food. They are incredibly loveable and holdable kittens and will show their affection with loud purrs and face rubs. Gidget is very chatty and will meow, purr, and rub on you during petting sessions. Gadget is just as sweet but has more of a wild, playful side. Gidget and Gadget’s sister, Gemma, has already found her forever home, but these two beautiful girls are still awaiting theirs. They have grown quite bonded since their sister was adopted and would love to go to the same forever home together. They are spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and tested negative for FIV/FeLV.

TVAR’s kitten and bottle baby programs rescue kittens - some only days old - who are unable to be adopted from the shelter and place them in foster homes where they receive medical care, love, and a home setting until they are healthy, able to be spayed or neutered and ready for their forever homes

Fluctuating prices and destabilizing events across the country and world can make the future feel uncertain. Planning ahead, especially with decisions relating to the end-of-life, is one way to gain some peace of mind — even amid all of this unpredictability. At Cypress Lawn, we encourage our neighbors to make their arrangements in advance for several reasons. Below are just a few of the many benefits that come with preplanning.

2. Your family will know how you’d like to be remembered. Preplanning your own funeral eliminates any guesswork from your funeral arrangements. Your family will know exactly how you’d like to be remembered, and you can feel confident your service will be carried out just the way you envisioned, from the food served at the reception to the location of your final resting place.

Our licensed professionals are available 24/7 to answer any questions families have about preplanning a funeral or cremation with us. Visit www.cypresslawn.com for more information or call us anytime at (650) 755-0580.

1. Preplanning can help ease stress about the future. When you preplan, you can get your detailed wishes put down in writing. Under the guidance of our experienced staff members, you’ll make important decisions at your own pace. You can even do this from the comfort of home on your computer.

3. Preplanning lets you set up a financial plan. Many families overspend on their loved one’s arrangements because they are too overwhelmed by grief. Putting your plans in place ahead of time allows you to take an honest look at your budget and carefully consider the options. You can even pay for your arrangements in advance — protecting your loved one from worrying about expenses down the road.
