AIG, who on the spot asked Ty to join AIG.

In 1983 Ty joined AIG as, of course, a litigator, but soon found out that a game composed of winners and losers at trial was not for him. He liked win-win solutions, preferably creative ones that has never been tried before. As Ty puts it, if you want to succeed in business the easiest thing to do is to pick a field with not a lot of competition, and then become the best at it. Insurance has never been known for being innovative so staking a claim to be considered one day the most innovative person in the insurance industry seemed like low hanging fruit. Besides, Ty really liked doing things differently. For instance, when at AIG Ty was asked to estimate the amount of losses his insured directors and officers policyholders would suffer as a result of lawsuits arising out of the Y2k crisis, he also saw an opportunity to create a new insurance product. AIG created Y2k Insurance for company executives adding millions of dollars of new premium to the bottom line. This, in turn, led to Ty examining the Internet as an once in a century phenomenon that would bring tremendous change in the economy and to society. To Ty that meant new risks and new risks meant an opportunity to create a new insurance policy. Ty become the Chief Operating Officer of AIG’s new eBusiness Risk Solutions division and created Cyber insurance, now a 3 billion dollar industry. A few years later AIG senior management asked Ty to head up innovation and product development for AIG globally.

In 2012, at the age of 54 and after spending almost 30 years in legacy insurance companies, Ty decided to

Innovation Insurance Group where he would work to create new types of insurance products, and insurance models. Soon IIG became the “go to” place if you needed an insurance product to run your business that simply didn’t exist.

An example will illustrate the point. An entrepreneur had a business valuing intellectual property like company patents. He went to the banking industry and suggested that they could increase sales by loaning companies money based on the company’s intellectual property which the entrepreneur would value for the bank. The bank said “we don’t trust your valuation”, and refused. Later the entrepreneur went back to the banks, and said, “What if my valuation was guaranteed by an insurance company? Then if the loan falls, you’d just have to lay a claim to the insurance company and they’d pay you out.” The banks said that they would consider. So, the entrepreneur went to a large insurance broker and asked for an “intellectual property collateral guarantee” insurance policy.The broker said that such a product did not exist and referred the entrepreneur to Ty. Lemonade was not so much about new products, but a new business model, a completely new way of conducting insurance. In May 2015, two Israell entrepreneurs, Dan Schreiber and Shai Wininger, came to Ty with an idea: They wanted to create a company in the insurance industry called Lemonade, which had something to do with community. After spending three days brainstorming the idea in Israel, Ty agreed to come on board as employee #3 and the company’s Chief Insurance Officer.

Lemonade became the first licensed and regulated InsureTech insurance carrier in the United States and is widely viewed as one of the founding companies of the InsurTech phenomenon. Geared toward millennials,

Lemonade would sell homeowner’s and renters insurance in seconds through an mobile app, pay claims as fast as 3 seconds and give all excess profits to charity. In less than three years it became the number 1 new business insurer of rental insurance in New York and other major markets and obtained “unicorn” status, a term referring to a private company with a valuation in excess of $1 billion.

After working with Lemonade for four years and writing a book, The Making of Lemonade (available on Amazon), about it, Ty retired from Lemonade and went back to find and launch the “next Lemonade.” As Ty says, “What I do for a living, what I enjoy doing, is creating, bringing something from zero-to-one.”

TY TODAY Ty created Innovation Insurance Group in 2012, after leaving Corporate America after thirty years, and then dove into the adventure of Lemonade, and when that adventure was over, went back to help the insurance industry continue to innovate and create in a postInsurtech world.

Today Ty Sagalow, the 36-year veteran of legacy insurance and one of the founding individuals of the Insurtech industry, is working on making this transformation possible by giving speeches, doing book tours, and urging people to think differently. He has been interviewed on the topic of innovation and insurance by many organizations, speaking about Lemonade and InsurTech, and the changes that the insurance industry has to make in light of the societal changes that has accurred over the last ten years.

And, of course, Ty is back helping form new companies. He is the Co-Founder of Assurely, an Insurtech MGA which provides directors and officers insurance to crowdfunding and online capital raising companies, a Partner in Profound Specialty, an insurance program administer specializing in unique coverage like professional jockey accident death and disability, and the Chief Insurance Officer of BlockRe, a technology and insurance broker serving the cryptocurrency and blockchain space.

No one can foresee what the future of the insurance industry will be but what can be certain is that with Ty Sagalow as part of it, it is bound to be interesting.

It is more than 2.5 times has seen national growth. As you know that every start-up faces some problems and challenges in the initial state. So, if women are facing it, this is no exception at all. Yet, there are a lot of hindrances relatively to women entrepreneurs. And they are overcoming them, here are more common challenges they have been facing and overcoming. CURBING CHALLENGES THROUGH EFFECTIVENESS Having great interpersonal skills, it helps you to convince people (inside, outside, and both of them) that is good for the organization. Being emotionally balanced and having soft skills, businesswomen have ability to convinces the client to fix the deal. Actually, they are growing rapidly with the help of these skills. According to Forbes, recently percent SME (SMALL BUSINESS SIZE) has owned by women entrepreneurs. Also, I was reading the Forbes article where it has mentioned that the government has made an announcement and launched an online portal that helps you to sanction loans up to one crore. It is really helpful for a start-up; in this, you can get over from financial challenges. Besides, in the digital ear, they are able to sell their products with the help of e-commerce. Also, having shopping apps are helping them grow. Now they don’t need big investor to start a company. They don’t require posh office space to perform the things as well. All they need, a laptop and a smartphone. With the help of these things, they are handling all demands. EMPHASIZING TEAMWORK OVER INDIVIDUALISM Sometimes we make an unhealthy decision to lead the company. however, in this way, you will have unnecessary collateral damage and will lose energy. Cooperation is a very essential thing that will help you reduce fear. Nowadays women entrepreneurs are growing so fast by emphasizing teamwork. Everyone requires leadership skills. Women do like to focus on it, they know that cooperation is a great principle than others. They have to fight until getting success. Also, as entrepreneurs, we should keep in mind that issues do not identify that things are going wrong. It means you are moving forward and you need a big source to grow.

Ever since Ty was a little boy, all he wanted was to be an actor, but his mother convinced him that the vast majority of actors don’t make any money so he set out to be the next best thing, a litigator--the kind of lawyer you see on TV. He ended up going to Georgetown University Law Center, one of the finest law schools in the country, when by chance one evening he was having dinner with the father of a friend. The father ended up being Hank Greenberg, the legendary icon in the insurance industry, the CEO of AIG, who on the spot asked Ty to join AIG.

In 1983 Ty joined AIG as, of course, a litigator, but soon found out that a game composed of winners and losers at trial was not for him. As Ty puts it, if you want to succeed in business the easiest thing to do is to pick a field with not a lot of competition, and then become the best at it. Besides, Ty really liked doing things differently. For instance, when at AIG Ty was asked to estimate the amount of losses his insured directors and officers policyholders would suffer as a result of lawsuits arising out of the Y2k crisis, he also saw an opportunity to create a new insurance product. AIG created Y2k Insurance for company executives adding millions of dollars of new premium to the bottom line. This, in turn, led to Ty examining the Internet as an once in a century phenomenon that would bring tremendous change in the economy and to society. To Ty that meant new risks and new risks meant an opportunity to create a new insurance policy. Ty become the Chief Operating Officer of AIG’s new eBusiness Risk Solutions division and created Cyber insurance, now a 3 billion dollar industry. A few years later AIG senior management asked Ty to head up innovation and product development for AIG globally.

FOUNDING INNOVATION INSURANCE GROUP

In 2012, at the age of 54 and after spending almost 30 years in legacy insurance companies, Ty decided to strike it out on his own forming Innovation Insurance Group where he would work to create new types of insurance products, and insurance models. Soon IIG became the “go to” place if you needed an insurance product to run your business that simply didn’t exist.

An example will illustrate the point. An entrepreneur had a business valuing intellectual property like company patents. He went to the banking industry and suggested that they could increase sales by loaning companies money based on the company’s intellectual property which the entrepreneur would value for the bank. The bank said “we don’t trust your valuation”, and refused. Later the entrepreneur went back to the banks, and said, “What if my valuation was guaranteed by an insurance company? Then if the loan falls, you’d just have to lay a claim to the insurance company and they’d pay you out.” The banks said that they would consider. So, the entrepreneur went to a large insurance broker and asked for an “intellectual property collateral guarantee” insurance policy.The broker said that such a product did not exist and referred the entrepreneur to Ty. Ty created the one and only Intellectual Property Collateral Insurance with a major insurance carrier.

When the bitcoin industry starting heating up in. 2014, it should be no surprise that Ty created the first bitcoin theft insurance policy.

THEN CAME LEMONADE

Lemonade was not so much about new products, but a new business model, a completely new way of conducting insurance. In May 2015, two Israell entrepreneurs, Dan Schreiber and Shai Wininger, came to Ty with an idea: They wanted to create a company in the insurance industry called Lemonade, which had something to do with community. After spending three days brainstorming the idea in Israel, Ty agreed to come on board as employee #3 and the company’s Chief Insurance Officer.

Lemonade became the first licensed and regulated InsureTech insurance carrier in the United States and is widely viewed as one of the founding companies of the InsurTech phenomenon. Geared toward millennials,

Lemonade would sell homeowner’s and renters insurance in seconds through an mobile app, pay claims as fast as 3 seconds and give all excess profits to charity.
