How a B. Com Graduate Became World’s Largest Steel Maker?

Lakshmi Niwas Mittal, who now lives in the United Kingdom, is a steel mogul from India. He is the Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal, the world’s second largest steelmaker, as well as the Chairman of Aperam, a stainless-steel manufacturer. Mittal was named third richest person in the world by Forbes in 2005 and world’s sixth richest person in 2011. He is also the “57th-most powerful person” among the 72 people featured in Forbes’ 2015 “Most Powerful People” list. The wedding of his daughter Vanisha Mittal was the secondmost expensive in recorded history.

Early Life

Mittal was born on June 15, 1950 in Sadulpur, Rajasthan, to a Rajasthani Marwari family. From 1957 to 1964, he attended the Shri Daulatram Nopany Vidyalaya in Calcutta. He received a B.Com degree in the first class from St. Xavier’s College, associated with the University of Calcutta. Mohanlal Mittal, Lakshmi’s father, owned a steel company called Nippon Denro Ispat.

Career

Mohanlal Mittal, the father of Lakshmi, was the owner of Nippon Denro Ispat, a steel company. Because of the restrictions imposed on the manufacturing of steel by the Indian government, Mittal, who was 26 at the time, founded his first steel factory, PT Ispat Indo, in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, in 1976. The state-owned steelworks of Trinidad and Tobago, which were making a huge loss, were purchased by Mittal in

1989. In a year, he turned them into successful businesses. The family’s primary assets in India up to the 1990s were an alloy steels facility close to Pune and a cold-rolling mill for sheet steels in Nagpur. His younger brothers Pramod Mittal and Vinod Mittal currently oversee the family firm, which includes a big integrated steel factory close to Mumbai, but Lakshmi has no involvement in it.

Mittal paid the Irish government a minimal fee of just one Irish pound in 1995 to buy the Irish Steel facility in Cork, Ireland. It was shut down in 2001, six years after it first opened, laying off about 400 people. Since then, the facility has experienced environmental issues that have attracted criticism. The Irish government attempted to get the High Court to rule that Mittal’s company should foot the bill for cleaning up Cork Harbour, but they were unsuccessful. The cleaning was projected to cost €70 million. Prior to December 2001, Mittal bought properties that he dubbed Ispat Mexicana and his firm in Kazakhstan Ispat Karmet. Sidex Galati, which he had bought in November 2001, was renamed Ispat Sidex in that month.

The day after purchasing the PHS Steel Group from the Polish government, which included Huta Sendzimira, Huta Katowice, Huta Florian, and Huta Cedler, the LNM Group was able to complete the $155 million transaction to free the Romanian government’s hold on the steel assets Siderurgica Hunedoara and Petrotub Roman.In the follow-up, Ispat Tepro became the new name of Petrotub Roman.

Mittal was successful in influencing Polish politicians during the 2003 privatisation of PHS steel group, which at the time was Poland’s largest steel producer, by using Marek Dochnal’s consultancy. Dochnal was later detained for bribing Polish officials in a different incident on behalf of Russian spies. In March 2007, the Polish government indicated that it was looking to renegotiate the 2004 sale to ArcelorMittal. After numerous

fatalities in his mines, Mittal’s workers accused him of tolerating “slave labour” conditions. For instance, in December 2004, 23 workers died in explosions at his mines in Kazakhstan as a result of malfunctioning gas detectors. Mittal’s hostile takeover effort of Arcelor in 2006–2007 was successful, and the business was renamed ArcelorMittal. He acquired ownership of a number of steel businesses as a result, including Usinor of France, Arbed of Luxembourg, and Aceralia of Spain.

Personal Life

Usha is Lakshmi Mittal’s wife. They have two children: Aditya Mittal, a son, and Vanisha Mittal, a daughter. Lakshmi Mittal got two brothers, Pramod Mittal and Vinod Mittal, along with a sister, Seema Lohia. She is married to Sri Prakash Lohia, who is an Indonesian businessman. Mittal purchased No. 9A Palace Greens, Kensington Gardens, previously the Philippines Embassy, for £70 million in 2008 for his daughter Vanisha Mittal, who is married to billionaire and philanthropist Amit Bhatia. Mittal hosted a sumptuous “vegetarian reception” for Vanisha at the Palace of Versailles in France.

Awards and honours

He received the “Steelmaker of the Year” award from New Steel in the US in 1996 and the “Willy Korf Steel Vision Award” from World Steel Dynamics in 1998 for his exceptional foresight, entrepreneurship, leadership, and achievement in the growth of steel worldwide. For his great business accomplishments, he was named the “European Businessman of the Year” by Fortune magazine in 2004, “Business Person of the Year” by the Sunday Times, and in 2006 he was declared “Person of the Year” by the Financial Times. King’s College London gave Mr. Mittal a Fellowship in January 2007, which is the highest honour bestowed by the institution. Lakshmi Mittal received Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2008 from the Government of India. In the same year Forbes magazine conferred him a Lifetime Achiev

Our search got us in touch with Mr. Kaushik Kurkal, Founder of the Monarch Group of Hotels. A charismatic hotelier, Kaushik aspires to establish a PAN-India hotel network that provides five-star service for a fair price.

Our editorial board had a candid conversation with him to learn more about his journey and goals. The following article is a holistic view of the discussion.

“Purpose is the reason you journey; passion is the fire that lights your way.” A person can work in any industry for a long time. But, without a burning passion and drive, the enthusiasm will wane. Kaushik started his career at a real estate enterprise, but soon he realized his calling was elsewhere. He was intrigued how the Indian hospitality industry was making waves and wanted to explore its opportunities. While he had no background in hospitality, his aunt had a hotel in Navi Mumbai. The hotel was functional, but, Kaushik found potential ways to redefine its operations with more sophisticated and disciplined supervision. His aunt saw potential and being a generous person handed him the opportunity.

Kaushik upheld his promise and increased the hotel’s overall sales and guest count, in just eight months! His focus was to increase corporate bookings, and as occupancy increased, he sought to expand and start his hotel chain. During this time, he found a gap in the quality of services at many upscale hotels. Business travelers typically reserve rooms for extended stays, and while hotels’ services were premium, the quality of the experience wasn’t. Kaushik sought to close this gap with value-added services. “I started providing services of three- or four-star quality at a no-star hotel,” he says. While he had a marginal profit, with only 20 rooms in the hotel, he ensured a scalable quality. Gradually, the consistency started drawing the attention of business travelers and investors too. With

their help, Monarch came under the spotlight. Presently he owns 17 properties, including hotels, luxury/leisure and long stays (The Monarch Stays) and has 3–4 more hotels planned. With an unblemished focus on excelling guest experience, it has built hotels in several eminent locations around Maharashtra and is thriving to become a PAN-India brand.

Be it for the guest or revenue standpoint, it’s always a pressure to book rooms at the best price. For corporate bookings, especially in very competitive markets, this is even more crucial. Today, the hotel has 115 rooms and enjoys about 85% occupancy.

There were many cancelled rental agreements for hotels, and he took advantage of the situation. Surely this was risky, but he still came out a winner.

Kaushik’s resilience stems from his endeavors to start from nothing, assemble a talented team, and launch opulent hotels. He is currently expanding in south with focus on driving exceptional customer experience. John Bertand

Born in Dippenhall, Hampshire, England on October 2, 1933, John Bertrand Gurdon is a British developmental biologist who was the first to show that differentiated (mature) cell nuclei can be reprogrammed by egg cells to return to a pluripotent state, where they can once again become any type of cell. Roy created the first anti rejection medication before coming up with the transplant recipient immune system suppression protocol that is now followed by everyone. The number of transplant units increased significantly as a result. In 1992, Roy performed the first successful liver transplant in Europe, the first heart, liver, and lung transplant in the world, and the first transplant involving the stomach, intestine, pancreas, liver, and kidney. DIGITAL RUPEE TODAY, THINGS TO KNOW

The Reserve Bank of India has announced that the first pilot programme for retail digital rupees (e-R) will start on December 1st, 2022.

“The closed user group (CUG), made up of participating customers and merchants, would be responsible for the trial’s coverage of a few selected sites. The digital rupee would look like an electronic token that can be used instead of money. The way paper currency and coins are currently issued, it would be issued in the same denominations.

Intermediaries, such as a bank, would be used to distribute it, the statement released by the RBI said.

The partner banks will offer users a mobile-based digital wallet that they can use to transact with e-R. The central bank states that both person-to-person (P2P) and personto-merchant (P2M) transactions are feasible. The QR codes that are displayed at retail places can be used to make payments to retailers.

The RBI has also chosen eight banks to take part in this trial project over time. Four banks—State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and IDFC Initial Bank—would launch the first phase in four different places. Later on, this project will involve Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Bhubaneswar would be the first cities where the experiment is put into practice. Ahmedabad, Shimla, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kochi, Lucknow, Patna, and Gangtok will also be covered with time. The scope of the pilot project may be gradually increased to accommodate more banks, users, and locations, according to the RBI.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das stated earlier this month that the bank would run a parallel retail e-rupee experiment to the wholesale e-rupee pilot. The RBI’s overall objective is to fully operational launch of the CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency) “in the near future,” Das added, declining to provide a timeline.

“I don’t want to provide a target date for when the CBDC will be completely operational since this is something we must undertake with extreme caution. This is the first time the entire world has done it. We don’t want to be in a rush, “He stated.

The RBI will want to address all of those issues and introduce the CBDC in a way that is non-disruptive because there will be some technological and procedural hurdles, he said. The pilot programme, according to the central bank, would assess the stability of the complete creation, distribution, and retail use of digital rupees in real time. Based on the lessons learned from this pilot, various aspects and uses of the e- R token and architecture will be evaluated in further pilots.

What will the Retail e-rupee be?

Since it will mostly be used for retail transactions, the retail e-rupee will simply be an electronic form of cash. Everyone may utilise it, including the private sector, non-financial consumers, and businesses, as it will be the central bank’s direct liability. It will be able to provide access to safe money for settlement and payment as well. “CBDC is legal tender issued in digital form by a central bank,” the RBI had previously noted. It is similar to paper currency and can be used interchangeably with it. The only difference is its form.

AMAZON TO DISCONTINUE ITS WHOLESALE DISTRIBUTION OPERATIONS IN INDIA

Amazon is closing down Amazon Distribution, an online wholesale retailer that supplies neighbourhood convenience stores in India. The platform was active in the areas of Hubli, Mysore, and Bengaluru. Through a specialised gateway, Amazon Distribution concentrated on meeting the needs of small neighbourhood shops for purchases. To protect current clients and partners, the initiative will be terminated gradually. An Amazon official told the media that the wholesale e-commerce site, Amazon Distribution, is being closed as part of the yearly operations planning review procedure.

Bihar In Mood To Boost Regional Media & Implement A New Film Policy

On the phone from Goa to PTI, Deepak Anand, Additional Secretary of the Bihar government’s Art, Culture and Youth Department, said “The minister declared that Bihar is developing a new film policy under which incentives and subsidies would be provided to filmmakers from all over the nation if they shoot in the state,”. When the Bihar minister spoke with the filmmakers, Anand was also there. “The minister believed that Bihar’s

participation in IFFI will boost the state’s film industry. The department’s efforts to build up the Bihar pavilion at the international event for the first time were also acknowledged by him “Anand tacked on. The new policy should close the holes, Tripathi told PTI. While Bollywood A-listers frequently visit the state for promotional events, there haven’t been many examples of movies being filmed there. The renowned Dev Anand and Hema Malini reportedly flew in to film a song sequence for “Johnny Mera Naam” in the 1970s at the ruins of the historic Nalanda university. Kia India Launches Certified Pre-Owned Car Business

The introduction of the “Kia CPO” Certified Pre-Owned Car Business was announced by Kia India today. The Kia CPO stores will be a one-stop shop for both buyers and sellers of used cars. Additionally, vehicles acquired through Kia CPO will come with up to four free scheduled maintenance visits, a guarantee that lasts up to two years and 40,000 kilometres, along with other benefits. All Kia vehicles certified and offered for sale through Kia CPO will be under five years old, have fewer than one lakh miles on them, and have undergone thorough 175-point quality inspections. In keeping with this, the business has now released a smartphone app for digital evaluation that integrates real-time data and offers expert pricing advice. Customers may also purchase cars from other brands through Kia CPO on an as-is, where-is basis. By the end of 2022, Kia wants to have more than 30 CPO locations operating in the nation.
